Georgian Triangle Humane Society Open House On Thursday December 3rd the GTHS held their annual Open House with lots of sweets and treats. Staff and volunteers were available for questions, guided visitors through a facility tour and shared some stories of the animals in their care. This event kicked off their annual drive which ran from December 3 to 23 and is their main source of donations to supply the shelter with food and supplies for the coming year. Thanks to everyone who came out for a great night and who continue to support GTHS’ efforts. Photos: Dave West Photography | Story: Jessica Woolsey

Cold and snowy Canadian winters allow for many fun outdoor activities like skating and tobogganing. When your children are outside playing, avoid the chance of injury by taking the right precautions. To fully enjoy the pleasures of winter, make sure your kids are wearing the appropriate clothes to stay warm and dry. Dressing in layers allows for more flexibility for changing weather and participation in outdoor activities. Layers are also more comfortable and create an air space between the skin and the cold for extra warmth. Always make sure your head, neck and hands are covered. When selecting winter clothes for your child, avoid drawstrings or long scarves that could get caught in a toboggan or other outdoor equipment. Choose a neck warmer instead of a scarf. Protect your child by putting sunscreen on their exposed skin before they go outside to play. Even in the winter and during cloudy days, the sun can cause harm to your child’s skin.

Club Intrawest along with Ski Can welcomed members and guests of the Blue Mountains Chamber of Commerce as they co-hosted the last Chamber After Six for 2015. It was a fantastic holiday themed event with wonderful food and the perfect opportunity to enjoy some socializing and business networking. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Tips for playing safe outside in the winter: • Check your equipment each season to make sure it still fits and is in good condition. • Advise children of playing boundaries and ensure that they stay away from dangerous areas like open water, roads and cliffs. • While skating, make sure that young learners have access to proper support by holding your hand or the railing around the rink. • Always have an adult supervise children playing near or on the ice. • When tobogganing, make sure the hill is safe. Do not allow kids to sled near roads, parking lots, rocks, trees or fences. • Make sure your children always wear proper safety gear, especially a helmet designed for the activity taking place. • Check for product recalls for helmets or other sports equipment. Keep safety top-of-mind when playing outside in the winter. Children can be seriously injured if they crash and hit their heads, run into an object or another person, or fall through ice into open water. To report an incident, contact the manufacturer or retailer. You are also encouraged to contact Health Canada. More tips on keeping your child safe while enjoying winter sports can be found online at Canada.ca. www.newscanada.com Georgian Life • January 2016

Have yourself a Bluesy little Christmas A Bluesy Christmas presented by the Collingwood Jazz and Blues Society lived up to its advance billing as a great ‘holiday shindig’. It was a night of all Blues Christmas songs performed by perennial all-stars including JUNO Award winner Chuck Jackson, the incomparable Cheryl Lescom and that other guy, Johnny Max! An evening filled with musical Christmas cheer that had a packed house singing along and dancing away to some of their holiday favourites. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Make 2016 Different with these 3 things Do you know what you want and yet somehow never get around to doing the important things? You are most likely what I like to call an Overwhelmed Optimist. The New Year is the perfect time to make changes. Make this year bigger and better than ever. If you know what you want, here are 3 key things to keep you on track: 1. See it to Believe it – It is not enough to keep that idea or concept in your head. Your mind will get filled with other thoughts. To keep that picture or desire in the forefront you need to create visual reminders. Write about it and describe it in detail. Vision boards, pictures on your fridge, notes in your calendar, screen savers, notes in your wallet, whatever it takes to keep it front and center. 2. Say No – No is one of the hardest words for many of us to say. Say no to the distractions and the things that are keeping you from what you really want. It could be saying no to your television, the endless posts on social media, doing everything perfectly or saying good bye to junk food. 3. Small Steps – Change is never one big giant jump. The change usually starts long before the leap. Every day take one tiny step forward. We can always do one step, even when you have huge resistance take one action towards your goal. Change does not have to be perfect. The important thing is to just keep going and don’t give up. Make it count in 2016.

Getting connected this coming year As we reflect on this past year and all of our accomplishments, setbacks, disappointments as well as encouraging and exciting news throughout the year, I am reminded to give thanks and be grateful for what I have. It is easy to become cynical with the news and information at hand twenty-four-seven. Most of the news making headlines is about tragedy, oppression of others, and world issues out of control. It’s a good time to reconnect with ourselves and reflect on the good things around us, the simple things that make us smile. One of my favourite observations is watching my granddaughter Emersyn, learning to walk with a sense of determination that only a child can possess. Too young to understand the world of failure. Too innocent to realize this is only the beginning of the challenges of life. I think a great opportunity for us to connect with our community is finding ways to help others. I am truly amazed at the number of volunteers that this area has. People dedicated to making a difference in other people’s lives every day. Volunteers in hospital, hospice, delivering meals, driving people to cancer treatments, checking in on the sick and the elderly, walking dogs and grooming cats, building houses, organizing fundraisers. The list goes on and on. I think volunteerism makes our community better and each of us benefits. Get reconnected with yourself. What is your passion? How can you volunteer? Who needs a hand up not a hand out? Everyone has a story and every story deserves to be told. Not every story has a happy beginning or a happy ending. But I am sure there are happy memories somewhere in the simple things in life. Becoming a good listener and finding ways to be present in other’s lives is a true gift. Some of the happiest people I know have little in the way of financial means, but possess a richness of life enviable by most. As you reflect on this past year and look forward to next, take some time to be grateful for all you have. Take some time to share with others and find a way to volunteer in your community. May you experience the joy and happiness I have, in appreciating the simple things of life this coming year. Brian A. Frozen In Time Festival

Christmas Market

December 2015 was unseasonably warm and virtually snowless, but much to the delight of visitors Downtown Collingwood spent the last week of the month Frozen in Time. Hundreds of people per day visited the Frozen in Time Festival venues which included the Winter Wonderland Activity Village and of course the incredibly popular ice sculpture exhibits which line the streets. The Ice Sculpture Festival, now in it’s fifth year, quite literally turns the downtown into a beautiful shimmering showcase and has become a tremendous tourist draw for the community. Congratulations and thanks once again to all those who organize, sponsor and support this fabulous event! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Custom Framing - an investment for life When you have your artwork custom framed, you get something that is unique and specifically designed just for you. From the mat to the moulding, each material you and your framer select for your special framing project is chosen to enhance the beauty of the artwork and of your home. But custom framing is much more than added decor; it is added protection for your art. Although a good artistic eye is something that can’t be taught, there are certain rules of custom framing which lead to good design that can. When followed, these guidelines, well known to your custom framer, produce a beautiful, well-balanced framing presentation that enhances the work of art without overpowering it. Perhaps the best reason to custom frame your personal and well loved works of art is that a professional picture framer has the skills and materials necessary to preserve and protect them closely as possible to their original condition. Acid and lignin free mat and mount boards like Nielsen Bainbridge Alphamat Artcare which contain no impurities that can damage the art that they surround. Special UV filtering glass, like Tru Vue Conservation series glass, can be used to protect your art from the irreversible damage caused by light exposure. Professional picture framers have the training and skills required to use these materials to beautifully present your treasured items in a way that will not only enhance their appearance, but protect them for your enjoyment for years to come. Think of it this way, if you were planning to build a new home for your family would you ask the person working in the lumber department of your local home improvement store to draw up the plans? Probably not. The same reason applies to your decision to use a custom framer’s services. A professional picture framer is a person who has been formally educated to know how to preserve, protect and beautify works of art, regardless of their known value. Lord Grey’s English Country Dance lives on in Georgian Bay Have you ever wondered how our ancestors entertained themselves at social functions? In Jane Austen’s time dancing was an integral part of social life. When people got together someone would bring out a fiddle or a tin-whistle and a dance would begin. Dancing crossed all levels of society from the country dance on the village green to the pomp and ceremony of a grand ball. Dance was absolutely essential to people’s existence and at the time everybody danced. Dances were structured and formed simple repetitive patterns. They were designed so that everyone integrated and interacted with each other. In some dances, for example, dancers may change partners numerous times. Dance also transcends gender and generation; young and old, male or female were all ready to share in a common activity. Although English Country Dancing originated in the 17th century, it also contains elements of the European court dances of that period. This European influence adds charm and elegance as the dancers move in time with the hauntingly beautiful melodies. “Country dancing can be hugely beneficial on so many levels,” explains dance expert, Lorraine Sutton, “It helps with balance, muscle tone, coordination, memory and posture just to name a few. It can lift the spirit and produce a well being hard to replicate in any other single activity.” Lord Grey’s English Country Dance Society provides an exciting and unique opportunity to relive the delights of the country dance. Sessions will be held on the third Sunday of each month January 17, February 21, March 20, April 17 and May 15 at the Marsh Street Centre in Clarksburg. Dances run from 1:45pm until 4:30pm and admission is just $5.00. No experience and no partner necessary. For more info contact lorrainesutton7@gmail.com or go to www.lordgreysdance.weebly.com. Christmas dinner compliments of Mayor Smith Wasaga Beach’s Mayor Smith had pledged during his campaign that he would donate his after tax salary to the community. His first event was put on for those in the community who may not have otherwise received a Christmas dinner. About 200 people registered for the event at the RecPlex on December 19th, to be greeted and escorted to their tables by volunteers. Over 80 people volunteered their time. According to people attending it was a “5 Star Christmas Dinner” with OPP officer Mark Kinney opening the door, reservation style check in, being seated by the Mayor’s daughters and their partners, the best service seen in years! Beautiful decor, numbered tables with beautiful poinsettia plants. The Mayor, said a prayer, a scrumptious dinner catered by Taste of Paradise was served at each table, there was Christmas karaoke, pictures with Santa, and a nicely wrapped gift to take home with cookies, chocolate and a Tim Horton’s gift card. There was a special gift for each child attending the event as well. It was truly a spectacular event.

Ice Damming requires attention Ice damming is a common problem that is evident in winter by icicles hanging from the eaves, snow buildup in the roof valleys and quick melting of snow from the roof. These problems are the result of inadequate ventilation and/or insulation in the attic area. Icicles hanging on the edge of your roof may look pretty but can cause real problems for your eaves, roof and inside your home.

L. PATTEN & SONS LTD. Quality Custom Homes Since 1958

L. Patten & Sons specializes in custombuilt homes and chalets in and around the Georgian Bay area.

The problem is caused by the roof being warmer than the external air temperature. Snow on the roof melts and refreezes, typically in the roof valleys and along the eavestrough. This creates a block or “dam” so that additional melting builds up in these areas. Damming can lift shingles and valleys and create leaks in the roof. Excess moisture can form on the inside of the roof resulting in the growth of mold.

Let over 50 years of experience building custom homes work to build you the home of your dreams.

In summer, inadequate ventilation will cause upper level rooms to be hot. But more than being uncomfortable, it impacts the shingles. Excess heat “bakes the shingles” from the underside because it cannot exit through the vents. The result is reduced life expectancy of shingles and can limit the manufacturer’s warranty. The solution is roof ventilation and proper insulation. Increase the amount of insulation, typically to an R50 value, which is recommended on new homes. Add vents to roof - there should be one vent per 200/300 square feet of roof area. Add or replace ventilation in the soffits. Air flows in through these vents and exits through the roof vents. The best time to make these changes is prior to replacing your roof. Solving the ice-damming problem will make your home more comfortable, reduce heating costs and save money on roof repairs and prevent premature aging of the roof.

At AM Roofing we can improve both the insulation and ventilation issues on any home or building. Our estimators always make a thorough check of the roof ventilation & insulation before providing a quotation. Contact us at: 9485 Beachwood Rd. Collingwood Phone: 705-445-3540 | www.amroofing.ca

‘Ugly Christmas Sweater’ After 5 When it comes to Christmas sweaters is it not said that “ugly is in the eye of the beholder”? Admittedly some of these sweaters worn by members of the Collingwood Chamber of Commerce at their recent Christmas After 5 are a little ‘over the top’... but ugly? Perhaps it would be more appropriate to suggest that the members were getting in the spirit, expressing their creativity, exhibiting their unique tastes or simply making a stunning ‘fashion statement’. No! What the heck they’re just ugly! Cheers to the Chamber and kudos to all who had the courage to don the wacky apparel! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Car loads of essentials collected for Christmas The Beaver and Bulldog held their Customer Appreciation Event on December 6th The turnout was incredible, and so was the food. The staff at Beaver and Bulldog were very busy and the laughter in the place almost drowned out the Christmas Music. Catherine Bennington graciously decided to make My Friend’s House the recipient of donations that have been on our Santa’s Wish List. Catherine and her staff were truly amazing! In appreciating their loyal customers, they also took the time to think about others. The gifts they solicited for the women and children at My Friend’s House are very much appreciated. The toiletry closet, food pantries and shelves of “extra special gifts” are now full! I was shocked to hear that we filled 2 car loads of life necessities and delighted to see that little “luxuries” such as movie tickets and gift cards were also included.

STEDMANS V&S

The Holiday season is an extra stressful time for our residents and having a reminder that she is not alone, that there are other people in the community who are supporting her in her decision to hope, often for the first time, for a violence-free future, can mean so very much to her. We are so grateful to have friends from the Beaver and Bulldog in our corner. We thank them for partnering with us to provide hope, support and safety to the women and children we serve, when they so desperately need it. My Friend’s House provides a safe haven in our community where victims of domestic violence need not stay in dangerous situations because they have no where to turn, or feel forced into situations that increase their and their children’s vulnerability to victimization. Each year, on average, My Friend’s House provides services to over 600 women and their children in our community through four major programs: • 24 hour Confidential Crisis Phone Line - responding to over 1500 calls a year • 24 hour Emergency Shelter • Outreach Counselling providing individual and group counselling • Transition Counselling services providing help in locating and securing safe and affordable housing, financial assistance, and advocacy support in the legal system Local law enforcement, as well as our hospital and other local social services providers, rely on My Friend’s House as a key referral source when dealing with our fellow community members living in dangerous situations. While we do receive government funding, it falls considerably short of the actual cost of providing these essential services. Our funding shortfall for this year is estimated to be $200,000 - money that we must raise through donations and fundraising efforts. For this reason, the support of the local community and fundraisers are critical to our ability to keep our doors open. Submitted by: Carol MacLaine, My Friend’s House 705-444-2586 ext 221

The Collingwood Christmas Day Feast A wonderful event that invites anyone and everyone of all ages to share a free and delicious home cooked Christmas dinner with others in the community on December 25th each year. What a fantastic second annual Christmas Day Feast was! Thank you to all of the very hard-working elves, donors, supporters and most of all our wonderful guests. So many stories, so many hugs, so much joy. Thanks to the combined efforts of our local service clubs, businesses, private donors and many volunteers, we were again able to offer a wonderful turkey and ham Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, FREE of charge to anyone who feels their Christmas Day would be enriched through this special community event. PT me! tinkerbell This little lady is TINKERBELL and we think she is an approximately 10 yr old Chihuahua X. TINKERBELL was found wandering up in the Timmins area all by herself :( She has been transferred here into our care in hopes of finding a very special person/family that would open their hearts and their home to her. We don’t know anything about her past history, but we think she may have been used as a breeder and when she could not do this anymore, she was put out :( She is understandably very wary and reactive upon meeting new people, however, in only over a week and a half, we have been able to earn her trust quite a bit already! Tink needs a quiet home with a dog savvy owner who will take her for a nice walk each day, play with her a bit and of course leave some room on the couch for her to cuddle with you at the end of each day! Could this be you??

Creemore Community Christmas Dinner The 14th Annual Creemore Community Christmas dinner, held at The Creemore Legion and organized by Donna Bayliss and her team of Elves, was a big success. Food and cash donations by local businesses and individuals were overwhelming. Entertainment provided by Hazel and David Wipper along with vocalist Ken Robertson and an appearance by the Jolly Old Guy in Red made the dinner complete. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Easton is a big lovable boy who likes catnip, rolls over in delight & is eager to please & entertain you. He was found outdoors in winter so has traces of frostbite on his paws & is so happy to now be in from the bitter cold. He was also in need of dental care which has been done through our Tooth Fairy Fundraising efforts. In his spiffy tuxedo he will play with any toys given to him & wait for your approval. We wonder how or where he got the little crooked end on his tail. It remains a mystery. Can you give this sweet boy a happy place to call home?

Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. If you think that we might be the perfect forever friends, please call 705-445-5204 ext 229 or send an email to dogadoptions@gths.ca and set up a time for us to meet and get to know one another.

Everyone wins when kids are in the kitchen The New Year is a wonderful time when families can pause and reflect on the importance of family time. After a steady stream of holiday visiting, it’s the perfect time to get back into a routine and spend quality time with your children. By cooking with your children, you can provide them with a way to express their creativity and help them become confident cooks. Not sure where to begin? Follow these three steps to get started. 1. Let them know they’re welcome. Involving your kids in the kitchen is as easy as putting out the welcome mat. The next time you make a family meal, ask your children to help you. Don’t fret over mistakes – enjoy yourself as you connect with your children and build memories that will last forever. What can you do right now? • Take my child along occasionally when I go grocery shopping • Invite my child to watch me as I cook dinner • Ask my child to help me make a special family recipe 2. Start out simple. When kids first start cooking, it is important to help build their confidence in the kitchen. Let your children try cooking activities that interest them, and encourage them to try different kinds of tasks. Making tacos? Let your children make the guacamole. Having a barbecue? Let them make the potato salad. Keep your children interested in cooking by continuing to challenge them and giving them more responsibilities as they gain confidence and skills. What can you do right now? • Ask my child to prepare a salad or side dish by himself or herself • Ask my child to stir food on the stove so it doesn’t burn • Show my child how to use kitchen tools, such as a food processor or rice cooker • Give my child dinner preparation tasks to complete independently 3. Build their confidence. Kids need to know that you trust them in the kitchen. As you see your children growing comfortable with cooking tasks, give them more complex jobs to help them learn new skills and stay motivated to continue cooking. What can you do right now? • Cook with my child at least once a week • Let my child help me with simple cooking tasks • Let my child make part of the meal on their own • Let my child independently make an entire meal • Experiment in the kitchen with new recipes and meal combinations

Building memories and important life skills is easy when cooking becomes a family event. Get your kids in the kitchen and cook up some fun with tasty meal ideas and activities for every skill level. Weekend Breakfast - Weekends are a great time for making breakfast as a family. Create timeless traditions and great memories the whole family will cherish. Dinner-and-a-Movie Night - Family movie night is the perfect excuse to get everyone together in the kitchen. Pick a food-related movie and cook up the film’s featured dish before or after sitting down to enjoy the show. Info from: www.familykitchen.ca. This website helps parents get started and provides easy recipes & ideas to get children involved in cooking today. Research shows that children enjoy cooking and see it as an opportunity to express themselves creatively. Children who are welcomed into the family kitchen to prepare foods are more likely to try new foods, have better eating habits and have more confidence in the kitchen.

Are Your Products Certified Organic? Know the Difference

Deciphering food labels and marketing claims can be a challenge for the average consumer. Companies use production and handling claims as a way to differentiate their products in the marketplace. Organic is one label that most consumers are familiar with, but understanding what “organic” really means can help consumers make informed choices. They are not all created equal.

Probus members know how to party! The members of the Mountainview PROBUS Club had a wonderful time at their Christmas dance at Osler Brook Golf & Country Club. Everyone enjoyed an amazing meal, festive cocktails, had a great time dancing and getting their photos taken at the photo booth. Probus Clubs are organizations for men and women who have retired from their profession or business and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Each Probus Club is sponsored by a Rotary club and meets at least once a month for fellowship and to hear guest speakers. Photos: Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH | Story: Selena Blais

Organic products have strict production and labeling requirements. They must not be produced by means of excluded methods such as genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, or sewage sludge and also must be produced per the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances. To receive certification, the production must be overseen by a National Organic certifying agent, following all certifying organic regulations. NATURAL - Contains some Natural ingredients but does not have to be chemical, pesticide, hormone, antibiotic or GMOfree. Nothing is grown organically. SPECIFIC ORGANIC INGREDIENTS - Made with less than 70 percent certified organic content • may only list certified organic ingredients as organic in the ingredient list • remaining ingredients may contain chemicals, pesticides, GMO’s, antibiotics and hormones. MADE WITH ORGANIC *** - Made with at least 70 percent certified organic ingredients • remaining ingredients must be produced without excluded methods and must be specifically allowed on the National List • May still contain chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. GMO’s are not allowed. ORGANIC - All ingredients must be certified organic, except where specified on National List (up to combined total of five percent of non-organic content) • Must state the name of the certifying agent, may include USDA organic seal and/ or organic claim. May contain 5% of chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. GMO’s are not prohibited. 100% (Certified) ORGANIC - All ingredients must be certified organic, processing aids must be organic, product labels must state the name of the certifying agent on the information panel, may include USDA organic seal and/or 100 percent organic claim. Chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and GMO’s are prohibited. Pure Organic Hair Studio is an organic concept salon providing artistic cut and colouring techniques. Slopes finally open! Blue Mountain Resorts had a tardy opening this year with Mother Nature not wanting to switch over from fall to winter. Visitors were able to enjoy some unique ‘winter’ experiences like riding the zipline and playing mini-golf but on December 30th after some snow and lots of snow making, the dedicated tribe of Winter Warriors came out to ride the runs. Here’s to a great season - better late than never! Photos: mycollingwood.ca | Story: Selena Blais

Mayor Sandra Cooper, Councillor Bob Madigan and Councillor Mike Edwards even tried out the aerial silks. The club is located at 95 Sandford Fleming Drive in Collingwood, offering aerial arts and ground circus programs (aerial silks, aerial hoop, trapeze, hula hoop, poi and more!) for all ages and levels.
