Dogs We Love in Cranberry Mews hosted Pet Pictures With Santa on Saturday December 7th. Pet owners and their canine best friends came out to get a picture with St. Nick and enjoy some Christmas treats. The hot chocolate warmed our bellies and the smell of delicious dog cookies baking in the oven wafted through the air! In Christmas spirit, Dogs We Love donated all proceeds from the day to the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. Stand By Me K9 Network, in partnership with Abernant Veterinary Services, hosted ‘A Canine Christmas’ on Sunday December 8th with all proceeds donated to the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. Dogs were out enjoying a fun filled day – they tried a variety of agility courses, enjoyed mini massages, got chiropractic advice, enjoyed some treats and topped it off with a photo session. Attendees had a great time and we hope there will be another event next year!

Thoughts from my notebook Well winter is in full swing! It started particularly early this year, with a November opening for Blue Mountain! I hope you had the chance to slow down and enjoy the holiday festivities with friends and family. I am finally coming out of my triptophan coma (still enjoying my mom’s turkey soup and my homemade turkey potpies). With a three year old who just got her first pair of ice skates for Christmas, I guess I will be hitting the ice after a 20 year hiatus. Now that should be interesting. I’m sure we will also be out building snowforts, tobogganning and possibly even ice fishing this year. I hope the local coffee shops are well stocked with marshmallows for all the hot chocolate we will be consuming.

A Recipe To Reduce Stress in 2014 As the New Year arrives we are tempted to reflect on our past mistakes and all of the things we could have done differently. Best-selling author, Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo author of “A Happy You” suggests this is a recipe for stress. She suggests that thinking about our past mistakes and all the things we could have done differently leads to more stress. Looking to all the future mistakes we may make or all the things that can happen to us can increase worry. I tend to agree with Dr. Lombardo. I have met many people in my financial practice who constantly get caught up in thinking about past mistakes they have made. These mistakes cause the clients to worry and prevent them from taking advice from a qualified advisor to get them back on a road of recovery. Having a trusted advisor to help with your emotional transitions is key in times of despair. There are several positive things we can do intentionally in our day to day lives that will help to heal past wounds. In this coming year we can choose to be more intentional about our relationships and cultivating new ones. We can be more intentional about spending time to reach out and think more of others than ourselves. Lending a hand to someone who needs a friend during difficult times makes both people feel good. Being happy takes some effort, for it is easy to become cynical and non-caring. Being generous of your time for your family and friends is both rewarding and will deposit much happiness in your personal emotional bank account. You never know when you will be called to withdraw some much needed happiness during a time of personal grief.

It’s our business to understand your business

I am a great believer that people come into our lives for a reason. Living in the present moment allows us to appreciate people and the special circumstances others have come to help us with.

We can help

As you look forward to a prosperous New Year think of ways of being more generous, kind, caring and loving. Every day you can find ways to help others and in doing so you have the recipe to reduce stress ad be happier in 2014.

Blue Mountain Opened Early! The ski and snowboard season at Blue Mountain started in late November this year! “With the weather on our side, and our snowmakers working diligently to get our trails ready, a November open reaffirms our commitment to what will be a long and successful winter season” said Paul Pinchbeck, Director, Marketing at Blue Mountain Resort. Blue Mountain continues to emphasize the importance of early season starts and late season finishes for skiers and snowboarders alike. Updated daily, snow and condition reports can be found on mycollingwood.ca or in real time on Blue Mountain’s Facebook and Twitter page. And of course, Blue Mountain Village is in full swing with activities including Family Fireworks every Saturday night as well as premiere shopping, dining and nightlife. With a winter full of events, Opening Day is only the beginning of great things to come this season at Blue Mountain Resort. Photos/Story: mycollingwood.ca

Welcome to 2014!

s the year begins to unfold it is a great time to set our intentions for the year. Some of you will have set New Year’s resolutions, established budgets and sales quotas, decided on new career strategies, made promises to find and live a more balanced life and the list goes on! Whatever it is you want more of this year (or less of) it is really important that you have a clear plan. It drives me crazy when I see people struggling to implement a plan that just doesn’t work. Here are seven strategies for creating a solid plan: 1. Keep it simple – could an eight year old understand your plan? Simple gets done, it really does. 2. One step at a time – take small steps, one baby step at a time. We can always take a baby step. 3. Make it fun – plans that make us smile are so much more inviting. 4. Remember the big picture – when the going gets tough (and it usually does) you really need a reminder of why you are doing this. 5. Set realistic plans – stop being a slave driver and set yourself up for success. I encourage you to under promise and over deliver. 6. Add the timelines – without a way to measure your plan it really is just a wish list. 7. Have an accountability buddy – to ensure success it is imperative that you build a team to help you stay on track. To evaluate your plan and to ensure your success, ask a professional for their input. Make 2014 the year you made it happen! Central Park Arena Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting 2013 saw the completion of the two new (much needed) sports and recreation facilities with the opening of the Centennial Aquatic Centre earlier in the year and on November 28th the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Central Park Arena. This beautiful new rink will allow added ice time for Collingwood teams, user groups and the public to help handle the constant overflow from the heavily booked Eddie Bush Arena. Kudos to the Town of Collingwood and all those responsible for seeing these facilities through to successful completion! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

STAY | PLAY | EAT | SHOP The Nutcracker wows at Meaford Hall After four months of rehearsal, Fleet-Wood Dancentre presented their ninth Nutcracker. Every two years the school performs this Christmas favourite at Meaford Hall and tours six local schools in Collingwood. Students look forward to dancing the many different roles from Little Rosebuds to The Sugar Plum Fairy. Alumni and FleetWood staff joined students for the two weekend performances. Students from five years to teens coped with rapid costume changes, from Rosebuds, to Mice, to Dancing Dolls. The school looks forward to repeating this performance in 2015 and continues to accept new students into the pre-professional program that prepares students for The Nutcracker, ballet exams, recital and competitions. Depave Paradise is a project of Green Communities Canada and our local partners in nine communities. The Environment Network in Collingwood with volunteers within neighbourhoods have been removing unwanted pavement and planting gardens filled with native species in its place. Why Depave? Hard surfaces, such as driveways, parking lots and buildings interrupt the natural water cycle by preventing rain water from soaking into the ground and creating heat sinks; warming up our cities. By removing pavement and replacing it with native plants, and trees we are increasing the infiltration rate, recharging our groundwater supply, and cooling our neighbourhoods.

Frozen for the Picking Each year in December we wait for the perfect time for the right temperatures to pick our ice wine grapes, it has to be cold enough to freeze the grapes and the water inside the grape should be -8c (however not too cold to ensure the sweet sugars can run when put under pressure) and -10c maximum. On Saturday December 14th a team of volunteers picked the grapes, and over a few days (when it was warm enough) we pressed the frozen grapes to make 300+ litres of Vidal Blanc Frozen on the Vine. We want to thank all those hardy volunteers who braved the -15c temperatures for the early morning start. At Georgian Hills Vineyards the Vidal Frozen on the Vine 2011 has just been released in 200 ml and 375ml bottles. Take a drive out to Beaver Valley Grey Road 2 at Victoria Corners and take in the beauty of the vineyards and enjoy a tasting of local award winning wines. Open Wed - Sun 12-5pm all winter. www.Georgianhillsvineyards.ca Photos/Story: Robert Ketchin

5 reasons to see your massage therapist that you’ve never heard of until now

We all know that a good massage therapist can help relieve muscle pain and work out those “kinks” and “knots” that have been annoying you lately, not to mention help melt away some of that stress you’ve been dealing with. But what you may not know is that a massage therapist can also assist the body’s healing process by treating an array of many other conditions. 1. Scar tissue - This collagen-based tissue develops as a result of the body’s natural inflammatory process – from injury, or other issues like arthritis and immobilization. Massage therapy can have the following effects on scar tissue: decreased swelling, decreased amount of scar tissue, soften tissue by freeing restrictive fibrous bands, increased circulation, desensitize hypersensitivity of the scar. The most important factor is timing. If massage is performed before the collagen fibers mature into scar tissue, there is a better chance for successful results. 2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome/Constipation - Constipation is slow, difficult or even infrequent bowel movements. Optimal travel time for a normal, soft formed stool is from 24-48 hours from ingestion of food to elimination. Treatment includes soothing clockwise abdominal massage (the same direction as peristalsis), but also addresses muscles in the lower back that can contribute. In the case of IBS, abdominal massage should not be performed during the diarrhea stage as it can make matters worse. 3. Jaw pain/TMJ - Sometimes jaw pain can be accompanied by clicking or popping, locking, neck and shoulder pain, throat pain, headaches, ear stuffiness or ringing (tinnitus), nausea, teary eyes, sensitive teeth, and decreased jaw range of motion. Massage therapy begins with the muscles of the neck and shoulders, treating trigger points and tension. Next the therapist moves to the face and jaw, before putting on gloves to treat the inside of the mouth. This allows access to key jaw muscles that are often contributing to dysfunction and pain. In addition, stretches and joint mobilizations are used to maintain joint-tissue health. 4. Fractures (yes, even in a cast!) - Paired with physiotherapy and treatment from a medical doctor, massage therapy can be an effective adjunct to decrease associated symptoms that come with fractures and wearing casts. An RMT can help to decrease pain and swelling, increase circulation and maintain tissue health. Combined elevation and cold hydrotherapy below the cast site will help to decrease swelling in the limb under the cast. Massage, stretching and range of motion techniques are focused on the muscles that are likely being overused to compensate for the affected limb. Without treatment of compensating tissues, they can become affected from overuse and may become a greater source of pain than the original injury itself. In addition, there are very subtle and gentle vibration techniques that can actually be applied directly over top of the cast, creating a soothing effect to reduce pain. 5. Breast Pain - Out of all five conditions mentioned, breast massage for breast pain may be the least recognized available treatment option. Both men and women can experience this type of pain, and when clinically indicated, massage therapy can provide relief. Before treatment begins, informed consent will occur between the therapist and patient (as with any massage therapy treatment). The following are clinical indicators concerning breast massage: general drainage problems, pre/post menstrual pain, breast swelling and/ or congestion, discomforts of pregnancy and/or lactation, blocked milk ducts (contraindicated if mastitis), pre/post surgery including breast augmentation or reduction, symptomatic relief of pain (i.e. chest muscle tension), promotion of good quality scarring and relief of adhered/restrictive/painful scarring, common benign breast conditions, assistance with breast health, discomfort from cancer treatment, rehabilitation from cancer treatment, including post mastectomy. Next time you are searching for the right form of care to address your needs, consider registered massage therapy as a viable treatment option. Jessica Kelly is a Registered Massage Therapist, practicing in McNabb Health Centre in Collingwood, as well as on-site work for groups, including corporate settings. www.mcnabbhealth.ca 705-445-6511 Georgian Life • January 2014
