Patrons of Collingwood Heritage Program The Collingwood Museum and the Collingwood & District Historical Society have launched a new partnership program bringing them together with the Collingwood Public Library and history students from Collingwood Collegiate Institute. This not-for-profit venture is designed to foster awareness and appreciation for Collingwood’s rich history through the production of audiovisual vignettes by local high school students for academic credit. Cranberry Resort hosted an evening viewing of the first four films, and to say they were impressive would be an understatement. Kudos to all on this great new initiative! Local Youth Take Charge this Summer Some of our most enterprising youth are really taking care of business! The South Georgian Bay Small Business Enterprise Centre is pleased to offer two entrepreneurship programs for youth in the South Georgian Bay region. Summer Company is available to students between the ages of 15 and 29 who are returning to school in the fall. Students receive funding of up to $3,000 to run a summer business. Starter Company, part of Ontario’s Youth Jobs Strategy, is available to youth 18-29 who want to start, buy or grow a business and who are no longer attending full time school. Summer Company and Starter Company are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and administered by the South Georgian Bay Small Business Enterprise Centre. Both programs offer hands-on coaching, training, business skills development, and mentoring to help enterprising youth start and operate a successful business. Mentoring is a key component of the programs enabling youth to connect to local experts and entrepreneurs in the community. These entrepreneurship programs are an exciting opportunity for youth to do something they love, and learn about the business world first hand. The participants get to be their own boss, receive start-up funding, and also gain valuable entrepreneurial skills as they turn their business idea into a reality. The Summer Company Program has seen a great deal of success in the region. In the past 6 years, 42 students have opened and successfully run their own businesses. This year, 10 students will be launching their own summer ventures. Look to the ads on this page for details about the Summer Company businesses and how to get in contact with this year’s program participants. Corynn Fowler is a participant in this year’s Summer Company program. She founded Merrybrook Farm to turn her passion for fresh, healthy, sustainable food into a business venture. Corynn grows organic vegetables and herbs, offers recipes for sale featuring local, food, and documents her experiences through a food blog. “A recipe is only as good as the ingredients it is made with, and I quickly discovered that the best ingredients come from seasonal and local sources. As I began developing more recipes for my food blog, Nourished by Corynn, I delved deeper into essence of the farming communities that were providing me with delicious, healthy, and whole ingredients. From there, it was a natural transition to move towards organic farming myself, and so Merrybrook Farm began. Swing by the Collingwood Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings for fresh, organic produce grown at Merrybrook, and checkout nourishedbycorynn.com for inspirational recipes and my adventures in sustainable eating.” Joe Crozier launched his Summer Company business, iPhone Joe at the beginning of June. iPhone Joe is an emerging local business promising fast, affordable, and reliable repairs for iPads, iPods, and naturally, iPhones. “I don’t think iPhone Joe would’ve been possible without the help of the Summer Company program. I’ve gained so much insight into marketing, customer relations, and accounting - all of which I’ve made use of with my business. iPhone Joe is off to a great start, I’ve had customers from all over the Georgian Triangle and I have high hopes for the rest of the summer.” Starter Company is a new program that launched in April, 2014 with the intent of helping young people succeed in today’s global economy. Similar to Summer Company, youth receive a micro grant to help start, buy or grow a successful business. Participants launch a full time business and commit to the program for a minimum of six months. Four participants will be launching new businesses as part of the Starter Company program. Michael Burgess is launching Vibrant Green Gardens through the Starter Company Program. Michael’s company focuses on creating edible gardens for local customers that look gorgeous and taste great. “I’m really proud to be a part of the Starter Company program. I think it’s incredible that there are such golden opportunities for people interested in becoming their own boss, creating work for others, and improving the world in their own way.” Michael Burgess continued, “I’ve been an entrepreneur for a while, and I deeply believe it’s a more challenging yet rewarding path than other options around. It’s epic to be with a community of other people that are pushing their own limits and seriously pursuing their ambitions. I honestly couldn’t be happier to do great work for people and receive the fruits of my own labour.” Congratulations to this year’s 10 Summer Company and 4 Starter Company youth on their new business ventures! Please support these ambitious and hardworking young entrepreneurs! Submitted by Gillian Fairley, SBEC 705-446-3355

Loblaw Recipe of the Month

Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Burgers

Its summertime; time to be outside and barbeque everything you can.

It’s hard to write a recipe for the amount of ingredients you need, because burgers are pretty personal. Make your burger night fun by letting everyone make their own. These burgers are not for the faint at heart; allow 7 ounces (200grms) of lean ground beef per person. On a platter prepare finely diced red onion, jalapeno peppers, chopped fresh herbs, salt and pepper and a season base of your choice. I like the PC Black Label Peri Peri spice blend.

Open 7 days a week 8am to 11pm

705-445-1431 Grate some cheese. I like to use Oka or an old Cheddar. You only need two tbsp. per12 Hurontario St., Collingwood burger. I have even done this with stilton, and it’s great if you like that flavour.

Get some good tomatoes.

Season and mix the beef. Add ½ an egg white per burger.

Divide the meat into portions. Divide again, top and bottom. Put a slice of tomato in the middle of the burger and top your cheese. Use another half of your ground beef to cover and seal.

Wrap each burger with four slices of bacon and refrigerate 30 minutes. Place on a hot grill and cook 10 minutes on each side.

This burger doesn’t need too much more, a Kaiser bun and some sunshine. Enjoy!

Tim Hortons Camp Day Send a kid to camp. You’ve heard it many times over the years and while it is an experienceand memory most kids cherish throughout their lives, sadly with the economics of today it is prohibitive and costly for so many families. Thanks to the efforts of the Tim Hortons Foundation with local franchisee Jan Trude and her staff and volunteers, thousands of kids continue to have the opportunity to enjoy a ‘summer tradition’ and growing experience that sadly so many of us take for granted. Kudos to all and thanks for your annual efforts in support of this great program! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Summers are never long enough Summer is officially here! June 21st marked the longest day of the year. So how do you intend to spend your summer? Is it filled with things to do? Travel plans? For most, it’s a time of being busy. Measuring the success of a summer is often mistakenly determined by how many activities we can squeeze in. I shared with a friend that summer never seems long enough. They agreed that they just had so much they wanted to do. They have plans for every weekend and a few weeks of holidays at the cottage. They hope to catch up on some repairs around home and cottage. I suspect when we jam our days with a never ending to-do-list, time will seem to fly by and we are left sometimes with the feeling of not accomplishing much. In talking, we found ourselves already looking to the end of August and summer just got started! After realizing there are approximately 12 weekends in a summer, it became clear that without an early spring and an extended fall, summers really are short! This past winter is an example of an extended season. Life is like the changing seasons. Sometimes it seems we’ll never get over a setback. For most people there are never enough hours in a day to deal with the stresses of life. Each of us is gifted with 86,400 precious seconds each day. It never seems enough to get everything done. So as you reflect on your past summers, or look to your future seasons, just keep in mind to not take them for granted. Finding some quiet time to reflect on your many blessings, may equip you to start each day with a grateful heart and begin to appreciate all that you have. Summer is finally here! Even when it’s a little chilly at night, it’s warmer than winter! Brian A. McMillan CFP, CLU, CH.F.C, is Principle and Life Transition Advisor of Team Approach Planning in Collingwood. Crime Stoppers of Simcoe Dufferin Muskoka is a civilian, volunteer based crime fighting program which provides a way for the public to anonymously report information about crimes and criminals to the police. Crime Stoppers’ tipsters never have to identify themselves, never have to attend court, and may be eligible for cash rewards. Our mandate is to assist the Police in solving crimes making our communities and schools safer. Our program encourages members of the community to call anonymously with information that assists in solving crimes that have been committed, are being committed or are about to be committed. Crimes range from minor thefts to murders. We offer cash rewards to anonymous callers when their information assists the police in recovering stolen property, seizing illegal drugs or when an arrest is made. Big Brothers Big Sisters Annual Awards We are blessed to have so many wonderful charitable organizations within Collingwood and the Southern Georgian Bay region but I have to admit while I love, support and applaud the efforts of all of them I have a particular ‘soft spot’ in my heart for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters. I think it has to do with the smiles on the faces of the ‘littles’ as they share their joy and appreciation for the time spent, the adventures shared and the fun that they have experienced with their ‘bigs’ that they might otherwise not have the opportunity to enjoy. It is indeed a very wonderful and heartwarming experience. Among many recognized at this year’s awards dinner Littles Cerenity, Cody, Tyler and Zack received the annual Jim Otterson Recognition Awards from Suzanne (widow of the late Big Brother Jim Otterson). A tremendous evening as always with a remarkable organization! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

10 YEAR WARRANTY Depave Paradise is a project of Green Communities Canada and our local partners in nine communities. The Environment Network in Collingwood with volunteers within neighbourhoods have been removing unwanted pavement and planting gardens filled with native species in its place. Why Depave? Hard surfaces, such as driveways, parking lots and buildings interrupt the natural water cycle by preventing rain water from soaking into the ground and creating heat sinks; warming 24up our cities. By removing pavement and replacing it with native plants, and trees we are increasing the infiltration rate, recharging our groundwater supply, and cooling our neighbourhoods.

Why Dental Implants? When teeth go missing the jaw bone begins to resorb. This bone loss can cause a sunken mouth and chin. This bone loss must be made up with a taller denture base. Many patients may be able to wear a standard denture, while many more will need to use an adhesive to retain these dentures. At some point the patient may become frustrated with loose, falling dentures. This is where the implant can drastically help by providing a mechanical lock between the shrunken gums and the denture. Implants can help preserve facial structure by stimulating bone and preserving existing bone. When you had all your teeth, the roots stimulated the jaw bone. Implants act like tooth roots, they anchor your denture to the bone in your mouth. Dental Implants can greatly improve your smile, help you eat what you want, and give you the confidence to speak in front of others without worrying about your dentures falling out. PROFESSIONALS HERE TO HELP YOU Barb Sharland Andrews - My personal inflammation story

Pamperme Day Spa

As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist for over 9 years I have talked about the pain of Inflammation and its ravages on the body with dozens of folks. Left untreated or labelled as arthritic, many of us have learned to just live with the discomfort for years - often being irritable with those we love instead of getting help. I personally experienced how one can accommodate the situation - not being able to sleep because of the niggling pain - for me it was a shoulder injury that developed into almost a completely frozen one. It wasn’t until a truly serendipitous meeting of a wonderful Chinese acupuncturist that I realized the slippery slope I had been on - a totally unbalanced body!

From the moment you step into the Spa, our focus is to provide excellent customer service. Whether you are coming to spend the afternoon or buying product or gift certificates, we want your experience to be one you will remember. Pamperme Day Spa was designed with you in mind. A respite from the chaotic outside world. We combine natural products with a clean elegant décor to envelop you in peace and comfort. We use luxurious Dermalogica products, known around the world for stunning results for all of our treatments.

It was just this year so I can still feel strongly how important it was to get help to learn to reverse the pain physically was the first step, and now to deal with the inflammation. I knew the top 10 Inflammatory Foods were and eliminated them from my diet but most importantly I knew what to put in my body - lots of good quality water, amazing herbs, lots of colourful fruits and vegetables and higher amounts of Omega 3’s. I truly need to honour the healing - move, but just to the point of not adding more pain, feel grateful for every step forward and every food choice that will hit the off switch for inflammation. When I spend time with my clients I often find out that they too have been suffering in silence. There is no need, I can help. For more info write to me at nutribarb@hotmail.com or call me at 705-443-8140.

Dirty, Exhausted, Black and (Met Con) Blue The crazies were at it again punishing themselves on the hills of Blue Mountain for the annual Met Con Blue. You know the type... the people who actually enjoy getting up early on a Saturday morning to run, crawl, climb, swing, slither and sweat over 5 or 10km of rugged terrain and brutal obstacles. This year saw a healthy increase to over 1700 participants challenge the course. I not sure who is worse, the aforementioned crazies or the deviously twisted organizers who come up with new forms of torture for these poor people to endure! Mission accomplished... now let’s get over 2000 hardy souls out next year! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Are You Unstoppable? ou cannot stop a force in motion or as Sir Isaac Newton states in his Law of Motion “an object in motion will remain in motion”. I was to learn how very true this is.

Last week I was out running with my daughter’s dog Chloe. Chloe is two and still a very high energy puppy that needs lots of exercise. We started off our run easily with me “jogging” and her doing a fast walk on the leash beside me. It didn’t take long for Chloe to get bored and ramp up our speed. Now I was sprinting. We carried on like this and then she tilted her head towards me, put her ears back and bolted at full speed. I was still running myself and could not pull back on the leash. I realized how difficult it actually is to stop a force in motion. There was no possible way I could keep up and I got the giggles. For a few minutes it felt hopeless. I could picture myself still holding on to her leash, being dragged through the mud like one of the cartoons I used to watch as a kid.

BROCHURES • BUSINESS CARDS • FLYERS etc.

I am happy to say she did stop. I think it was from my sheer determination to not let go. It got me thinking about how important it is in life to move forward quickly. Go for it and leave the naysayers, your competitors, the doubters behind you in your dust! When you accelerate your speed and give it all you’ve got, you truly are unstoppable!
