Profile on Business: OxiSix OxiSix is a locally owned and family operated business that offers multiple services such as Pest Control, Power Washing and Gutter Cleaning for both residential and commercial properties. Think of them as your property’s “one stop shop” when it comes to restoring your curb appeal. They offer professional cleaning services dedicated to bringing your properties to a brand new shine! They clean anything exterior including driveways, sidewalks, patios, bricks, siding, fences, gutters & more. Their goal is to make your house the best looking in the neighbourhood! Their approach to pest control uses regular monitoring and record-keeping to determine if and when treatments are needed. They use a combination of inspection strategies and pest control practices to keep pest numbers low and prevent unacceptable damage. It does not eliminate the use of chemical pesticides, but instead uses them ‘as needed’ only. OxiSix is new to the Collingwood area but has been in business servicing all of Simcoe County for over two years. They are highly trained in the work they offer and pride themselves on being available and accessible to their clients at all times. The Real Risks in Retirement Recently I attended the national conference for Elder Planning Issues in Niagara Falls. At the conference many issues were put forth for discussion and consideration when dealing with our aging population. In 2014 more than $214 billion was spent on health care in Canada. This is one of the factors leading to a prediction of an impending “health care tsunami.” People are living longer and it’s costing more each year to fund the crisis. Tax dollars fund our health care system in Canada and in order to fund increasing health care, the government has become creative with provincial lotteries and casino revenues to support this financial burden. Did you know that the old age security program in Canada is funded annually by tax dollars? Unlike Canada Pension there is no reserve earning money to pay this national pension. This shocked me when I heard it… most Canadians depend on this pension and supplemental pensions. One of the real risks in retirement is outliving your money. Tax comes in many forms: HST, provincial taxes in alcohol, liquor, tobacco etc. The Income tax of your investment dollars in guaranteed investment certificates at current interest rates will likely negate any growth at all. Often the growth after tax will not even keep up with inflation that is currently less than 1%. Consider a TFSA (Tax Free Savings Accounts) for these investments. The bottom line is, people are living longer and if you thought you might live to the age of 80 you had better plan on living until 90. The average person will require some form of care in the last five years of their lives. As the government seeks ways to fund healthcare, more and more responsibility will be passed to you and your family. So what can you do? I suggest you sit down with someone qualified and prepare a financial plan to take into account your long term needs. Look at things like proximity of family and alternative care such as home care. Where will the money come from to take care of you when our healthcare can’t? Who will care for you when you are put on a waiting list with the Community Care Access Centre? The good news is people are living longer, the bad news is people are living longer but not necessarily with a quality they all want and expect. The really good news? With proper help you can do something about it. Brian A. McMillan CFP, CLU, CH.F.C, EPC, is a Life Transition Financial Advisor / Principal with Team Approach Planning in Collingwood. Eating foods that irritate their system can cause a myriad of problems, mostly involving inflammation. These inflammatory conditions include cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, dermatological, respiratory, immune and rheumatological disorders. When these foods are eliminated, most of these conditions will improve. I have seen it over and over again in my practice and there is much research supporting this. As in years past a good number of teams participated and once again greatly needed dollars were raised for this very deserving cause… and of course as always participants had a blast riding around town both raising awareness for Heart & Stroke and receiving ‘honks of support’ from local motorists and passersby. Ask Susan

by Susan Dyment

I’m a busy working mom, how do I balance healthy eating and weight loss when I am so time challenged? Time limitations pose some of the biggest challenges to eating nutritiously. Symptom: Skipping Meals Beware! This behavior can be habit forming. It can damage your health and possibly your waistline. You’ll eventually get hungry and pay the price later with sagging energy levels and the temptation to eat whatever is in sight. Skipping meals also slows the metabolic rate, making it more difficult to lose weight. Eating all your calories at one meal overwhelms the body’s need for fuel, forcing some of the excess to be stored as body fat. Solutions: • Don’t go longer than 5 hours without eating. If you do, blood glucose levels will dip, leaving you feeling weak, fatigued and mentally sluggish. In this state, you’re less steady physically and your ability to make decisions is reduced.

with Sharron Fleet, Jonathan Fleet, Sierra Maraj & Colin Eccles

• Drink a glass of milk or juice as a kind of “mini-meal” that will give you important nutrients and energy.

Fleet-Wood Dancentre & Meaford Hall present

“The Nutcracker ”

• Try grazing--eating nutritious snacks--to get you through a busy day. Symptom: Eating on the Run As people hurry through a day’s work, they often leave little time for eating. Fast food and other available choices don’t always provide good nutrition.

December 11 & 12

Here is your chance to have your child in The Nutcracker!

Your child could be a “Rosebud” and dance with “The Sugar Plum Fairy”

Solutions: • Take it with you. If you can find time for coffee on your daily commute to work, you can give yourself a nutrition boost at the same time. Keep a ready-to-go snack/ mini-meal parked beside the coffee pot. Or try keeping a week’s worth of easy breakfast meals stocked in the car, your briefcase, or your desk at work. • If you are forced to make quick choices of fast food or other restaurant fare, realize that the many choices range from fat-free to fat-intense. Some items can contribute a full day’s intake of fat. • For lunch and dinner, side salads are usually safe choices from a calorie and fat standpoint, but ask if vegetable sticks are available. Vegetable sticks will provide more nutrition than the typical iceberg lettuce salad. Request a low-fat dressing (or carry your own) and go easy since even “low-fat” dressings can contribute large amounts of unwanted fats. • Choose grilled, broiled or baked chicken entrees--hold the special sauces and mayonnaise. • Use partially prepared foods--the pre-cleaned vegetables in the supermarket’s produce section and the diced onions and green peppers in the freezer section. • Cook double portions of casseroles and other dinner entrees and freeze for future use.

We are looking for boys who would like to join the Nutcracker Prince and defeat the Mouse King and his army!

It sends over 17,000 children to camp! While summer camp is an experience most kids cherish in memory throughout their lives, sadly with the economics of today it is prohibitive and costly for so many families. Thanks to the efforts of the Tim Hortons Foundation and in particular our local franchisee Jan Trude, her staff and volunteers, thousands of kids continue to have the opportunity to enjoy a ‘summer tradition’ and growing experience that so many of us take for granted. Kudos to all and thanks for your annual efforts in support of this great program! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Soap Box Derby brings families together Wasaga Beach Scout Group gave their youth licenses to drive in the 13th annual Soap Box Derby on June 6th. The recipe for fun for these youth aged 5-15 was a challenging course that included a steep hill, tire obstacles, a pool noodle ducking obstacle and concluded with a hair pin turn. The cheering crowd was entertained as not all drivers stay in the designated lane, duck when needed or a pit crew was needed to make minor repairs. Parents were allowed to assist but it is the child’s workmanship that the judges were really looking for. Cars were judged for best looking, most original and best team work. Smiles all round were evident and the day concluded with awards and loot bags. Organizers thank all the community sponsors for supporting our youth! Special thanks to the Wasaga Beach Lion’s Club. 6th Annual Murray Clerkson Awards Each year the finalists for the Murray Clerkson Awards must make the process of judging incredibly difficult and this year was no exception as the offerings from all five were simply amazing. The five finalists included Heather Cook, Jane Fleetwood-Morrow, Leonora Husveti-Frenette, Katerina Pradivaia and David Warren. While all were equally deserving of the recognition, this year’s award was presented to Katerina Pradivaia. Congratulations Katerina and all for your outstanding achievements and contributions to our local art scene! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Ventilation and the Domino Effect Just like us, a healthy attic needs to breathe.

Celebrating

Ventilation is a system of intake and exhaust that benefits all types of roofing systems by creating cooler attics in the summer and drier attics in the winter. It might sound obvious when you read it, but ventilation is something most homeowners don’t think about. In the winter, improperly ventilated attics can result in mold and rot from the warm, moist air rising from the rest of your home that is unable to escape. In the summer, hot air becomes trapped, and, combined with moisture, damages your roof deck and shingles. The trapped heat also affects the rest of your house, increasing utility bills and causing appliances to work harder. Damage will become especially significant if left untreated over the summer/winter cycle. Ventilation problems typically cost many times the price to detect and repair the underlying issues, now you know to pay attention!

Where amazing food, excellent service and a country atmosphere come together for an unforgettable dining experience

Insulation is another key element that many homeowners overlook. Paired with proper ventilation, insulation helps protect your roofing system as well as lowering utility bills. Who wouldn’t want to extend the life of their roof while saving money? In the winter months, you’ve probably noticed on a neighbours home, or even your own, ice forming above the gutters. Ice damming occurs when built-up heat in the attic melts roof snow, which becomes trapped at the roof edge and refreezes. When the snow melts in the spring, a significant volume of water can back up through the shingles and behind fascia boards, and soak roof decking, wall sheathing, and damage dry wall and paint. Definitely not a problem you’ll want to deal with in the thick of winter!

Open daily at 10am County Rd. 124 Singhampton 705-445-1247 | www.mylarandloretas.ca

Insulation works best when it keeps the climate in your attic relative to the outdoors, minimizing condensation, deterioration, mold, and rot. By minimizing the heat or air-conditioned air that escapes in to the attic, and having properly functioning intake and exhaust vents, you are placing a safe bet on extending your roofs lifetime. To make matters worse, many roof shingle warranties become void as a result of the damage caused by insulation and ventilation not originally being installed to code. Be sure to protect your family and your investment. AM Roofing provides free no-obligation estimates for roof replacement/repairs and insulation. Contact them at: 9485 Beachwood Rd. Are Your Products Certified Organic? Know the Difference

Deciphering food labels and marketing claims can be a challenge for the average consumer. Companies use production and handling claims as a way to differentiate their products in the marketplace. Organic is one label that most consumers are familiar with, but understanding what “organic” really means can help consumers make informed choices. They are not all created equal. Organic products have strict production and labeling requirements. The must not be produced by means of excluded methods such as genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, or sewage sludge and also must be produced per the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List). To receive certification, the production must be overseen by a National Organic certifying agent, following all certifying organic regulations. NATURAL - Contains some Natural ingredients but does not have to be chemical, pesticide, hormone, antibiotic or GMO- free. Nothing is grown organically. SPECIFIC ORGANIC INGREDIENTS - Made with less than 70 percent certified organic content • may only list certified organic ingredients as organic in the ingredient list • remaining ingredients may contain chemicals, pesticides, GMO’s, antibiotics and hormones. MADE WITH ORGANIC *** - Made with at least 70 percent certified organic ingredients • remaining ingredients must be produced without excluded methods and must be specifically allowed on the National List • May still contain chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. GMO’s are not allowed. ORGANIC - All ingredients must be certified organic, except where specified on National List (up combined total of five percent of non-organic content) • Must state the name of the certifying agent, may include USDA organic seal and/or organic claim. May contain 5% of chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics and hormones. GMO’s are not prohibited. 100% (Certified) ORGANIC - All ingredients must be certified organic, processing aids must be organic, product labels must state the name of the certifying agent on the information panel, may include USDA organic seal and/ or 100 percent organic claim. Chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, hormones and GMO’s are prohibited. Pure Organic Hair Studio is an organic concept salon providing artistic cut and colouring techniques. Runners and hikers raise $14,000 for local water charity Runners and hikers hit the trails at Scenic Caves Nature Adventures on June 7th, raising $14,000 for Creemore-based water charity Tin Roof Global. The second annual GUSH Run or Hike for Water event featured 2K, 5K and 10K runs and 2K and 5K hikes through the stunning scenery on offer at Scenic Caves. “This is the most beautiful course I’ve ever run,” said one competitor after finishing the course. In addition to running or hiking the trails, the event’s 275 attendees enjoyed a spectacular performance of First Nations drumming and dance by the Red Spirit Singers, a fresh, local meal featuring food donated by The New Farm, Hoffmann’s Meats, Giffen’s Country Market and Miller’s Dairy, and the opportunity to try out Scenic Caves Nature Adventures’ epic Thunderbird Twin Zip Line. Money raised at the event will benefit Tin Roof Global’s efforts to provide and protect clean water in Ontario First Nations communities and in rural Uganda. “We’re incredibly grateful to all of our supporters who joined us for such a great day,” said John Millar, executive director of Tin Roof Global. “The funds we raised today will directly benefit communities that are in water crisis.” Submitted by: John Millar, Executive Director, Tin Roof Global. Teotihuacan To Toronto... via Collingwood! That’s right folks just as we locals have known all along ‘all roads lead through Collingwood’. Just ask the organizers of the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games. Sure the torch was lit at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico in May and will end it’s journey in Toronto on July 10th at the opening ceremonies, but the relay in Canada which started on May 30th including 3000 torchbearers covering over 5000 road kilometres through 130 communities over 41 days would not have been complete without its stop in Collingwood for a huge downtown celebration on June 11th. It was a great party and salute to the upcoming games, the athletes from the 41 member nations, and of course our local torchbearers including Abby Joost and Casey Morrison! You see… all roads do lead through Collingwood! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Young photographer’s career taking off Two and a half years ago Leah den Bok was about to take an early retirement from photography. She was only twelve and a half. “I don’t think my pictures are any good!”, she dejectedly exclaimed to her dad one day. Joel Sartore, the world famous National Geographic photographer, thought otherwise. Hired, by Leah’s parents - both of whom are artists to appraise her work, via Skype, he immediately saw her potential. A father of a daughter himself, he had the wisdom to see that what she needed now, more than anything else, was encouragement. Since then, he has, through a delicate blend of enthusiastic praise and blunt criticism - “You can do better than that, Leah!” - been helping her to develop her potential. But even he has been surprised by her progress. Following one coaching session with Leah, he excitedly sent her dad the following email: “…even at 14, her work has soul, and plenty of it. That’s something that cannot be taught. You either have it or you don’t and she certainly does. If she sticks with it, I think she’s well on her way to becoming not just a good photographer, but a great photographer. And I’m not kidding. Please tell her. —Best, JS”

Now fifteen, Leah’s photographic career is taking off. She is currently holding her second solo exhibition at the Collingwood Public Library that runs until the end of August. Following this she will be having another exhibition at the L.E. Shore Library in Thornbury in March, 2016, as well as showing some pictures at the Mad and Noisy Gallery in Creemore. She is also in demand as a wedding photographer, having just finished her second wedding shoot. When she graduates from Jean Vanier Catholic High School she hopes to win a scholarship to study photography at Ryerson University. What are your Health Care Goals? “We have built a sickness care system rather than a health system. We have designed that system for the convenience of practitioners, not patients. We fail too often to say the three most important words in medicine: I don’t know. We see death as a failure, instead of aspiring to make patients comfortable and at peace at end of life. In our unrelenting quest for efficiency and measurement, we too often lose sight of what really matters. The patient. What do patients want? What are his or her goals? For some patients, the goal is to repair their acute woes, and to help them live long. For many they’re not going to be cured. Their focus on their quality of life. They want to be at home. They don’t want to fall. They don’t want to be in pain. They don’t want to be a burden. They don’t want to be alone. They don’t expect miracles – but they would like respect. They want to be listened to, and heard. We hear a lot these days about personalized medicine, about drugs and treatments that can be tailored to specific genomic and epigenetic markers. But you know what people really long for: personal medicine, not personalized medicine. They crave a human connection. Not just care, but caring. The very best medicine you can offer your patients is a listening ear. The very best treatment you can offer them is a compassionate heart.” (Excerpts from The Globe and Mail, Tuesday June 9, 2015, Health Reporter and Columnist Andre Picard) Right at Home Georgian Triangle has the philosophy of “adding life to years... it’s what we do..” that being said it’s all about peace of mind for our clients and their loved ones. We want to be the family when family is not able to be there. Our focus is centered on the client and their needs whether they are medical or non-medical. “Our caregivers are happy to do whatever it takes to make our clients comfortable in their own homes, wherever home is for them”, says Esson. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for seniors and disabled people in the communities we serve. Pan Am torch makes its mark in Meaford The residents of Meaford, including Mayor Barb Clumpus and MP Larry Miller, were out showing off their Pan Am spirit June 11th when the games torch passed through town, a 41 day journey shared by more than 130 communities. Everyone enjoyed free refreshments and merchandise provided by Bill’s Valu-Mart as part of the celebrations. The Pan Am flame was carried by Elizabeth Macdonald to the Harbour Pavilion where it was transferred to Hannah Woodhouse, Meaford’s official torchbearer for the Pan Am Games, July 10- 26. Pan Am Torch burned brightly in Stayner Ten local people carried their Pan Am Torch on the way to Collingwood and then to its final destination in Toronto. The Torch Bearers and the public enjoyed a wonderful community celebration at Stayner Collegiate Institute. During the last leg of the run, SCI teacher Holly Polasek handed off the torch to SCI student Alex Breedon who took it part way around the track before relaying the flame to the final SCI torchbearer Jake Underhill. Six of the ten torchbearers then led a procession of 500 students around the track carrying a large student-made paper maché simulated torch. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Donation to hospital to help fund Cardiac Monitors The Stayner & District Kinsmen Club have been loyal supporters of the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital Foundation since 1989. Since then, they have donated over $100,000. Jory Pritchard-Kerr, Executive Director of CGMHF, joined club members for a special presentation. Kinsmen presented a cheque for $10,000 in memory of a very special young man, Kevin Pardy. Kevin was the son of Carl & Exie Pardy, both well-known community supporters. Carl, is a member of the Stayner Kinsmen and son Kevin often joined the club activities. The generous donation in Kevin’s memory will help fund Cardiac Monitors for the Collingwood G&M Hospital. Thank you to the Stayner Kinsmen for their continued, generous support. This special tribute donation in Kevin’s honour will help patients at the Collingwood Hospital for years to come. Expressing passion for nature through painting The opening reception for ‘Northern Landscapes’ an exhibition highlighting selected works from Ryan A. Sobkovich, was held on June 7th at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts. The show which ran from June 3rd through June 28th “explored the beautiful landscapes around the shores of Georgian Bay and the lakes in Algonquin Park. Visitors were able to view framed oil paintings in various sizes from small ‘plein air’ paintings to larger studio works revealing vibrant colours and bold brush strokes.” Congratulations to Ryan on an outstanding exhibition. 5 myths about yoga - debunked!

by Jennifer Tindale

Myth #1 - You must be flexible to do yoga.

390 First Street Collingwood (705) 443-8776

311 Main Street Wasaga Beach (705) 429-8646

Most of us who practice yoga do so to BECOME flexible and to help us stay that way. The person in class who just touched her head to her knee may have been working towards that for months. We all had to start somewhere - the key is to START! Myth #2 - Yoga won’t give me the workout I need. Once you know the basic yoga poses (called asanas) look for a yoga class labelled as “Power” or Vinyasa Flow. You may get your sweat on without even stepping foot in a hot room! Myth #3 - Yoga is not for people with injuries or pain. There are two key things here. First, find the right kind of yoga class in consultation with your health care provider. If you are healing from a trauma/injury, a restorative/ therapeutic class is what you want to look for. Then, speak to your yoga instructor about any special conditions so they can help you modify the poses to suit your current situation. Myth #4 - I can’t do yoga - I’m not a vegetarian. Yoga helps you develop a healthy connection to your body by practising awareness of the body. It helps you tune into yourself, helps you determine what you need and what you don’t need. This means that you may find yourself gravitating towards a healthier lifestyle, however, giving up meat is not a requirement to do yoga! Myth #5 - There is only one kind of yoga. There are many different types and styles of yoga. Hatha is the umbrella term used for the physical practice of yoga. The term Hatha has also come to mean the more gentle style of yoga. Under the umbrella of Hatha yoga you can find styles such as: Restorative, Yin, Kripalu , Kundalini, Iyengar, Anusara, Vini, Vinyasa (flow), Ashtanga, Moksha, and Bikram. A quick Google search will give you an explanation of any of these styles. No style is inherently better than another so with so many available, it’s just a matter of finding which type is your cup of tea. If you are just starting your journey into yoga, a beginner/gentle Hatha class is a good place to start. These classes will give you the foundation you need to do the poses safely and help you derive the maximum benefit from the class. I hope to see you on your mat!
