2. Did you buy your first home in 2013?

You can take advantage of the federal First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit (HBTC). You cannot have owned and lived in another home in 2013 or in the previous four years to qualify. This credit can amount to $750 in tax savings. 3. Are you over 65 years young and not collecting pension, RRSP or RRIF income? If this is the case, you could be missing out on the $2,000 pension income credit. If your retirement savings is in an RRSP and you are just reaching 65 years of age, consider converting $12,000 from your RRSP to a RRIF and take $2,000 out each year from ages 65 to 71 to take advantage of this credit. If you already have a RRIF, you need to execute the $2,000 withdrawal each year. For 2013, the tax credit for Ontario residents would amount to $367 in tax savings, which could effectively make the $2,000 income tax-free. 4. Have you made modifications to your home to improve accessibility for a resident senior? The Ontario government offers you a tax credit designed to assist with these costs. The maximum claim is $10,000 for costs such as installation of wheelchair ramps, hand rails, widening of passage doors or other costs to improve accessibility or mobility within the home. The maximum tax credit would result in tax savings of $1,500. If you’d like any further information on any or all of the above tips, please feel free to contact our office at (705) 445-8493. Audiences have been raving about this all Canadian tribute to the Beatles! These boys have yet to perform without their crowds screaming, stamping their feet and yelling for more. Every part of the show at Meaford Hall was done with the utmost authenticity, right down to the Liverpool accents, costumes, and Beatle authentic equipment including the British Vox amplifiers and the classic Ludwig Ringo drum kit. The Caverners brought you back to The Ed Sullivan Show, then drove your car and took you on a yellow submarine to meet nowhere men, taxmen, and people named Jude, Lady Madonna and John and Yoko. Angel Feet Nursing offers in home service (wherever this may be) specializing in Diabetic foot care and geriatric foot care. Tracey’s desire for keeping your feet healthy for life stands out in her approach to her business, education and passion for health teaching. Working as a nurse, Tracey realized the importance of looking after your feet after seeing amputations, nail infections, sepsis and wheelchair bound individuals. Being an Advanced Foot Care Nurse has allowed her to spread the word about the importance of looking after your feet. It can be dangerous and too complicated for some individuals to look after their feet properly.

“As a Physician and neuro-scientist I have been trained to know why and how a treatment works. When it comes to Reconnective Healing. I don’t know how it works. I simply know from personal experience that it does”. Mona Lisa Schulz

Each step you take involves a complex network of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This, combined with all of the weight they carry, explains why feet can have problems. Your foot health can be a clue to your overall health. For example, joint stiffness could mean arthritis. Tingling or numbness could be a sign of diabetes. Swelling might indicate kidney disease, heart disease, or high blood pressure. Angel Feet Nursing currently operates in Retirement Homes, Long Term Care Facilities and Private Homes. Their private home service is very popular with individuals who like the service of someone coming to their home. Footcare Nursing is very complex and Tracey takes the time to do a full assessment of your feet, including health history and blood pressure (new). The Reconnective Healing is a ’no-touch’ healing method and often a life-changing experience, utilizing new frequencies of energy to allow for the healing of the body, mind, and spirit. When most people think of “healing”, they think of physical ailments being healed. Reconnective Healing however, goes far beyond the physical, and is intertwined with the mental, emotional and spiritual state of being an individual. I look forward to (re)connecting with you.

Get it while you can...

by Brian McMillan CFP, CLU, CH.F.C.

Success and Failure, who defines it? While I was watching the Olympics I started to think about all of the training time each athlete must have committed to, to represent their country at the Olympics, and the personal sacrifices each athlete, coach, family and friends made along the way for a chance to wear Gold for their country…or to say they helped someone get there. What I also find interesting is listening to each athlete and their view on their experience. Interviewers ask what they are thinking in the moment of glory or of defeat. Each athlete seems charged with emotion either that of glory or defeat. Silver medal vs Gold… we often see the athlete in a moment of reflection at that moment of victory. The interviewers like so many of us, just remember the moment successful or not. What I find most interesting about the Olympic experience is how each athlete will define their own success or failure. It is this personal definition and attitude that will most likely shape their future.

Cam Dyment of The Smoke was pleased to play host to Brown-Forman Canada as they held an exclusive launch of their 21 Year Old Collingwood Whisky. “This new, limited-release 21-year old is... all rye, sourced from a forgotten batch laid down in the Canadian Mist warehouse in 1991. It ranks in a different league with more stories to tell. Creamy, rich and bold, it’s seductively sweet, with notes of caramel, maple, date, prune and fig and a Cognac-like vinous character.” As mentioned by company reps this is a very limited batch so be sure to get it while you can at your neighbourhood LCBO because when it’s gone … it’s gone! Cheers and remember … Be Smooth. Drink responsibly. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

When I watch the TV interviews of the Olympian medal winners, we often see the athlete in a moment of reflection at that moment of victory. The interviewers like so many of us, just remember the moment successful or not. Life too can be about successes and failures. In my financial practice, I have the opportunity to ask the question “looking at where you are today in life what was your greatest accomplishment?” As you can appreciate I get a variety of answers. One observation as I see people reflect they usually have a smile and usually followed by a frown. While people are thinking about their greatest accomplishment, they almost simultaneously go to a place of failure. It is kind of how we as a society are wired…You can always do better! As I reflect on my greatest accomplishment, I feel it was the raising of our children to become who they are today. Raising a family doesn’t have much glory and there aren’t many medals. I do know the sense of success I felt as they graduated from school, got their first job, bought their first home or had their first child (my grandchild!) Like the parents of athletes competing in the Olympics there are times of disappointment too. So how do you define success or failure? Hopefully it is defined for you in the journey to get involved in the activity called life. Attitude of the experience will likely serve to be the defining moment for the athletes attending the Olympics. So who will define success or failure for you? Remember to thank those teachers, friends, parents and grandparents for making the sacrifices along the way. The pride of the accomplishment is often more than just a moment in time and usually there is more than just the athlete involved. Brian A. HERE TO MAKE YOU HAPPY!

Stay warm this winter. Save energy – and money – by replacing your furnace now There comes a time when even the most patient person decides enough is enough. Jennifer BaldwinKingsbury and her husband Steve reached that point this past November when, for the third winter in a row, their furnace simply stopped working. “We knew it was on its last legs,” says Jennifer, “but we opted to have it serviced yet again. This time, though, it lasted just one week before it broke down again!”

receive up to $650 in incentives for replacing an inefficient furnace and/or central air conditioning system with a new, high-efficiency unit. Units must be installed by a participating contractor, but even that is made easy: the saveONenergy website includes a “Contractor Locator” feature, where you can simply enter your postal code or choose to browse by city to find a participating contractor near you.

With the 13-year-old house (not to mention her two young sons) freezing yet again, Jennifer decided to get quotes for installing a new furnace. One contractor not only gave her a quote, he also mentioned the program saveONenergy HEATING & COOLING INCENTIVE program. “We went with him because he told us about the rebate for putting in a new furnace,” she says. “He explained the benefits and why he thought it was our best bet.”

Depending on your needs, the contractor you select will recommend and install a new ENERGY STAR® central air conditioning system, which is up to 15 per cent more efficient than conventional models, and/or an ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) furnace. An ECM uses a brushless motor technology that works to reduce the electrical consumption of the furnace motor by as much as 60 per cent over a standard motor. Considering about 60 per cent of the energy consumed by an average home goes towards heating and cooling, a new energy-efficient furnace and/or AC system will mean significant savings

Through the HEATING & COOLING INCENTIVE program, Ontario home and business owners can

month after month on your energy bills for years to come. The experience of working with a knowledgeable contractor, combined with the promise of longterm energy savings–not to mention the $250 the Baldwin-Kingsbury family received back on the price of their new furnace–has helped make Jennifer a believer in the saveONenergy programs. “I’ve even recommended that my friends go to the saveONenergy website because I know they are looking for ways to save energy too,” says Jennifer. Truth or Illusion re you seeing the truth or is it an illusion? I have come to understand that there are many versions of the truth. The truth often differs widely depending on which set of eyes view the same situation.

When I am making a presentation to a team, I will often show a colourful photo to the group and ask each participant to describe what they see. Interestingly no one ever sees the same things, their interpretations are always completely different. Who is right? Of course everyone is right they are all seeing the truth. The truth is not always what we believe it is. I think of David Copperfield, the wonderful illusionist that has held many of us spellbound. No one has been cut in half or has disappeared even though it looks so real. Occasionally to get the truth we must move past the illusions that may be so believable. To avoid making assumptions get curious and ask questions. For meaningful conversations to happen it is imperative that each party is clear on the “truth” they are discussing. Too often our communications, instructions or understandings are highly dependent on our own point of view. This is the beauty of a team, having a Coach or the helpful viewpoint of good friends. They can help you see the truth from different vantage points that you may not see. Few of us have ever regretted knowing the truth. We may not always like what we find but chances are it is better than lamenting and saying “I wish I had known”. SPRING IS COMING! These local businesses can help with your outdoor, yard & property needs Horner’s Weed Control & Lawn Care

Keep a pet-safe yard this spring (NC) The yard can be a wonderland for your pet, full of interesting smells, grass to roll in, bugs to chase and shady spots for naps. But if you use fertilizers, pesticides and other chemicals, it can be a potentially dangerous place for pets too. Dr. Simon Starkey, a veterinarian with PetSmart Canada, gives us some important aspects to keep in mind for a safer outdoor adventure: Pesticides: Slug bait and pest poisons are particularly dangerous because the taste entices pets to consume them. Small quantities can be very dangerous to your pet. Ask your local nursery for pet-friendly gardening products and follow application instructions carefully. Tightly seal containers and store them in a secure place. Poisonous Plants and Mushrooms: There are a variety of poisonous plants and flowers that are dangerous to curious pets. Some common poisonous plants include azaleas, lilies, bulb flowers (like tulips), onions, tomato vines and poppies. Mushrooms are the most commonly ingested organic material in the yard. Remove them. Mushrooms are a fungus and they can grow quickly, even overnight, so check your yard frequently. If you suspect your pet has encountered any of the above, be sure to take them to a vet as soon as possible. Visit www.petsmart.com for more information. www.newscanada.com

Depave Paradise is a project of Green Communities Canada and our local partners in nine communities. The Environment Network in Collingwood with volunteers within neighbourhoods have been removing unwanted pavement and planting gardens filled with native species in its place. Why Depave? Hard surfaces, such as driveways, parking lots and buildings interrupt the natural water cycle by preventing rain water from soaking into the ground and creating heat sinks; warming up our cities. By removing pavement and replacing it with native plants, and trees we are increasing the infiltration rate, recharging our groundwater supply, and cooling our neighbourhoods.

Optimist Club Harbour Hockey Classic Despite their hard work and best efforts the Harbour Hockey Classic 2013 had to be cancelled when Mother Nature didn’t cooperate, but the club remained optimistic (pun intended) about trying again in 2014. While it was dicey weather for a couple of days leading up to the event they managed to pull off a hugely successful day of great ‘four on four pond hockey’ at the Collingwood harbour. Kids of all ages strapped on the skates and had a blast in this informal shinny tournament. While a few victorious teams walked away with some ‘hardware’ for their efforts, everyone was a winner including Collingwood General & Marine Hospital who was the beneficiary of this outstanding fundraiser. Cook and stir onions and garlic in the same skillet used for browning the lamb until caramelized, 5 to 10 minutes. Stir tomato paste with enough water to partially dilute; pour into onion mixture. Stir to blend. Reduce heat to medium, cover Dutch oven, and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour half the Irish stout into the onion mixture, and bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Transfer entire mixture to the lamb. Pour remaining half of Irish stout into the mixture and add thyme. Cover Dutch oven, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 2 hours. Add potatoes and carrots and simmer, stirring every 20 minutes, until potatoes are soft, about 1 hour. Adjust salt as “A best friend is like a four leaf clover: hard to find needed; garnish with parsley.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! A NEW AGE OF CARE COMES TO THE G&M

A New Age of Care has come to the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital (CGMH) thanks to the overwhelming support of this generous community. Publicly launched by the Collingwood G&M Hospital Foundation in May 2012, the $10 million New Age of Care Campaign was a historic undertaking. Never before had South Georgian Bay attempted to raise such a significant amount of money from its residents, visitors, businesses and community groups.

705•445•4275

Walter Borthwick, Chair of the CGMH Foundation, announced that the campaign had successfully raised $9,878,136 for vital technology not funded by the government. “Our community has given so very generously to this campaign. We worked with the Hospital to firm up the purchase prices of the remaining pieces of equipment. We are confident that all the equipment and technology we set out to purchase can be acquired with the funds raised,” said Borthwick. Most of the priority purchases included in the campaign have already been made resulting in a much more succinct understanding of the funds needed to make the vision a reality. To date, the G&M Hospital has invested $5.4 million and acquired the following equipment through campaign funding: PACS (digital storage system for diagnostic images), CT Scanner X-Ray Suite C-Arm (real time x-ray unit for orthopaedic surgery), Portable Ultrasound Units (2) for Emergency & Obstetrics, 3-D Ultrasound Units (3), Upgrade to Meditech Patient Records Platform. “Our diagnostic imaging technology is now state of the art,” says Dr. Clare O’Brien, Chief of Radiology. “We are excited by the improvements we have been able to make to patient care – crystal clear images, ability to share images with other hospitals, shorter wait times and faster diagnoses. Our community has really stepped up to the plate with overwhelming support!” “Our small community has accomplished an amazing feat. Our Hospital has state of the art diagnostic equipment and we are implementing leading edge technology with the Electronic Medical Record. It is therefore time to acknowledge and celebrate the generous support of our donors that have helped us achieve our vision for a New Age of Care. We offer a huge thank you to every single person, business and community group that helped us reach our goal!” Pictured: Staff and a patient in the Collingwood G&M Hospital’s (CGMH) Diagnostic Imaging Department show their appreciation to the community for support of the New Age of Care Campaign. New technology continues to arrive at the CGMH as it moves toward the full implementation of a New Age of Care.

Moves like Jagger “Hot Rocks” had the Marsh Street Center bouncing off it’s foundation February 22nd. Lead singer Bob Wotherspoon (Mick) and band members Richard Colgan (Keith), Jim Hubay (Ron), Brad Daniels (Bill) and Dave Bourque (Charlie) are Canada’s number one Rolling Stones Tribute band.
