A short note from the Publisher

As you flip through this issue of Georgian Life you will see that our communities were a buzz with activities! As usual, this month a tonne of money was raised for many different good causes and organizations. Thank you to all of the people that take the time to organize, plan and implement all of the events that keep people connected and committed to what “pulls at their heartstrings”. It may be too late to leave winter behind and book a trip anywhere for March Break at this point, but there are lots of fun activities for the family going on all over our area. I hope you get the opportunity to spend some time with your families and friends doing the things you love. Take a look at the online calendar at www.georgianlife.ca if you still need some ideas.

Lots of energy and enthusiasm at Romp To Stomp It’s crazy fun, it’s healthy, it draws hundreds of women, men and children, it’s decidedly pink. It’s the annual Tubbs Romp to Stomp at Scenic Caves when eager participants throw on the snowshoes and raise a lot of money and awareness for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The event’s tally this year was almost $46k. Tremendous support for a great cause in an effort to ensure continually improving diagnosis, support, treatment and yes eventually a cure for breast cancer. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

The Blue Mountain Village Foundation made a $2000 donation to Women’s House serving Bruce & Grey. “The Foundation reviewed many applications for funds and all were very deserving,” says Don Braden, President of the Foundation. “We chose to support Women’s House Child Witness Program workshops for anti bullying and healthy relationships in youth in our schools.”

John Simcoe Awards Dr. Kellie Leitch, MP hosted the second annual John Graves Simcoe awards at Creemore’s Station on the Green. Kellie, along with her friend also named John Simcoe, presented awards to 10 Simcoe–Grey community leaders who demonstrated a high degree of selfless service and dedication to their communities. Among those honoured were Collingwood Mayor Sandra Cooper, former Clearview Mayor Ken Ferguson, Lorraine Leslie of Women with Vision, and Colleen Kotnisz of The Alliston Rotary Club. “Women’s House is extremely grateful to receive funds from The Blue Mountain Village Foundation towards the Child Witness Program. Money will be used to purchase supplies, as well as resources for both parents and children. This program is highly utilized and generates a wait list each year so it is important to keep up with the demand for the benefit of the youth in our communities!” Tiffany Love, Community and Fund Development Coordinator, Women’s House Serving Bruce & Grey. The Blue Mountain Village Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our local communities through its financial support of registered charitable organizations whose activities provide benefit to the residents of our local communities, with an emphasis on children and family programs. Collingwood Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic

Kelly’s 11 year massage career has taken her from Ontario to BC and back again. She has been growing her practice for over two years now in Collingwood.

At the Collingwood Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic, they offer Cupping Therapy. Cupping therapy is an effective technique that alleviates pain and muscle tension. While most of the visitors to the clinic receive acupuncture, laser therapy and herbal prescriptions, the fire cups have become increasingly popular with those who enjoy massage. Think of cupping therapy as reverse massage. Instead of applying pressure; the cups pull the muscle tissue and gently lift them. Therapists apply organic coconut oil to the skin and the cups are slid up and down the back or applied and left still over certain points.

Kelly’s massage experience includes working in clinics, spas and nursing homes. Her wide range of clientele has helped her evolve as a therapist over her many years in practice. Kelly’s approach to massage therapy is a balanced blend of effective therapeutic techniques and a calming touch. Kelly has additional training in Oncology Massage. As a result, she is able to safely treat individuals currently undergoing cancer treatments, those who have just finished treatment, and those who are in remission. You will find Kelly conveniently located in downtown Collingwood at 65 Simcoe Street, Unit 4. Across from the library.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture are a regulated healthcare profession in the province of Ontario and services are covered by most insurance plans without referral.

SCIO celebrates “70 Years of Rebuilding Lives” Their motto “We’ve got your back. You’ve got your future!” pretty much sums up the commitment, dedication and enthusiastic support of Spinal Cord Injury Ontario in their ongoing mission to “assist persons with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities in Ontario to achieve independence, self-reliance and full community participation.” While always a tremendously successful and fun event, this year raising over $100k, Ski and Snowboard day also allows “people to get back to what they love” and serves as “a testament to the strength and resilience of many people with spinal cord injuries and reminds us that there are no limits to what the human spirit can achieve.” Congratulations to all who made this day such a success… and hope to see you next year! AM Roofing specializes in all types of roofing systems which include Flat Roofing, Shingles, Cedar, Steel, Composites, Insulation, Eavestrough, Soffit and Facia. AM Roofing also performs Roof Inspections and Assessments for property management firms and building owners. The Simcoe Bluewater location of AM Roofing was founded by Tim Demers and Roger and Melanie Haviland in 2011. With the success of their Owen Sound and Guelph locations it made good business sense to enter the Collingwood-Muskoka market. Tim Demers and his team chose their current location because Collingwood is a beautiful and inspiring place to live and work. They are grateful to be part of this wonderful community. AM Roofing has gained a lot of experience working with some of the best property management companies and builders in the area. This has given them a great jumpstart to their growth and success. A big part of AM Roofing’s success is having the best team in the business, from installers, to the sales team, and their office team. AM Roofing employs 23 people year-round. Tim says: “They are the most dedicated people I have had the pleasure to work with.”

Tim would be on the road mostly meeting with potential customers, assessing roofs, doing site inspections or meeting with builders. Tim started in the business as a roofer. When the founder of AM Roofing Roger Haviland took Tim under his wing , he gave him the opportunity to grow from the ground up and to learn a lot about work ethics. In an industry that sometimes lacks honesty and professionalism, Tim was inspired by Roger to change the image and the way people look at the Roofing Industry. AM Roofing Tim Demers’ passion for his business stems from the faith and wisdom that was given to him to make AM 9485 Beachwood Rd, Collingwood Roofing the best company in the business and the (705) 445-3540 | amroofing.ca best company to work with.

Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO/ERO) District 17-Simcoe Donates $4,000 to Wendat Seniors Residence The Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO/ERO) District 17-Simcoe made a financial donation to Wendat’s new Seniors Residence. Thanks to the District 17’s generosity, the seniors will be able to safely enjoy a walk-in bathtub. “We’re pleased to be able to help with this worthwhile project”, commented Gail King, President of District 17 RTO/ERO. “Support for the project is growing”, states Wendat Executive Director, Lorna Tomlinson. “The RTO donation is part of a growing list of supporters which include many businesses and individual people. We still have not reached our fundraising target, but we have faith that the people in our community and surrounding areas will see what a positive step this is, both for seniors, and for the local economy. We are using a project management approach so we can use local businesses for the build.”

Gail King of RTO/ERO presents $4,000 cheque to Lorna Tomlinson of Wendat Community Programs.

The community is excited about this build; it is an assisted living facility for frail, low income seniors. The residence will house seniors who require supports such as meals, housekeeping, personal support, social activities and transportation. All these supports will be available for a low monthly cost of $950.00. Residents will come from many areas of North Simcoe, including Barrie, Collingwood, Orillia, Midland and Penetang. Donations to the Wendat Seniors Residence gratefully accepted and can be sent to: Wendat Community Programs, 237 Second St., Box 832, Midland, ON L4R 4P4 or call 705-526-1305. The foundation and basement for the new Wendat Seniors Residence in Penetanguishene are now complete. Construction will continue this spring and is expected to be completed later this year. “One of the biggest benefits of the project is the impact it will have on our hospital” explains Lorna Tomlinson. “Seniors who are blocking hospital beds will have one more supportive option to which they can be discharged, thereby freeing up those hospital beds for the whole community.”

Independent Electric donates $40,000 worth of lighting fixtures to the Wendat Seniors Residence Independent Electric donates $40,000 worth of lighting fixtures to the Wendat Seniors Residence “What a phenomenal contribution” states Wendat Executive Director, Lorna Tomlinson. “We are truly blessed to receive this size of a donation in-kind and very, very grateful to Independent Electric. Sue Bonnell, Director of Administration for IES commented “People are living longer and longer and projects like Wendat’s are badly needed.” Construction is underway on the Wendat Seniors Residence. It is anticipated that the residence will be ready for occupancy by late fall, 2015. It will serve 23 frail seniors of low income, providing them with private bedrooms with bathrooms, all meals, daily social activities and 24/7 personal support assistance. “What better way to leave a living legacy than to contribute to the costs for construction with a cash donation, bequest, or donation of building products. The building will be there to serve frail seniors for decades to come – literally a concrete investment to meet the current and future needs of seniors” says Lorna Tomlinson.

The right frame of mind

Celebrating her seventh anniversary.

Best tips on framing artwork There’s an art to framing. Whether family photos, sport memorabilia, watercolors, tapestries or Italian Renaissance oils, framing requires an artistic eye. A frame done right complements the art. According to experts, the most common mistake is matching the frame and mat to décor. If framed properly, artwork lasts a lifetime. There’s nothing wrong with buying inexpensive, ready-made frames, but the tradeoff is longevity. Less expensive frames are more likely to fail to protect the art from light and moisture damage.

JENNIFER HOWE, AT CHARTWELL SINCE 2007. It’s been seven years since Jennifer decided to move out of her house and into one of our residences. See the whole story and discover why she chose to write the next chapter at Chartwell.

The cost of professionally framed art varies widely, depending on size and quality of materials. There are no hard and fast rules for framing; • Take care in selecting the matting, which is the border that surrounds the artwork inside the frame. Matting prevents the artwork from getting buckled, wrinkled or moldy. • There’s no shortage of choices when it comes to frames. The challenge is picking one that complements the mat and artwork. Once again, the frame should not overpower the art. Don’t be afraid to go against the grain. Ornate frames are typically used for fine art, and metal or minimal frames for more contemporary pieces. Consider using a traditional frame on modern art and vice versa.

CHARTWELL.COM

• Light and moisture are the enemies of artwork, so choosing the glass or glaze that offers the right protection is important. • Use conservation materials to preserve artwork. Materials containing acid cause artwork to yellow and disintegrate. • Work closely with a professional framer to make sure you have a good idea of what the framing will look like before giving the go-ahead. Working with a framer is similar to an interior decorator. Communication is vital. Georgian Frame Gallery

Great partners like Service Clubs, the Chamber of Commerce, Businesses, Stonebridge Town Centre and the Town of Wasaga Beach make this great event happen each year, and of course it would not be the event that it is without the support of the community and tourists. The 10th Annual Snowman Mania event was held during a freezing cold weekend but thousands of people attended the different activities over the 4 days. Some events were moved indoors to accommodate for the inclement weather. With so much going on, we were only able to capture some of the many events that took place. The Opening Ceremony was held at the Real Canadian SuperStore/ Canadian Tire parking lot with a parade followed by artist performances, face painting and activities for the little ones.

Family Jam in Collingwood survives deep freeze Thankfully the bitter cold wind chills that dominated the first couple of days of Family Day weekend virtually curtailing much in the way of outdoor recreation, subsided by holiday Monday allowing for families to get out and enjoy some of the fun activities hosted by the Town of Collingwood. Skating, snow golf, fat bike rides, snowshoeing or simply sitting around a warm campfire were just a few of the family friendly activities provided for our enjoyment at Central Park. Winning or Whining

inners seldom whine. The winning athletes you know and the successful business leaders you follow all have a winner’s attitude. The truth is the winning began long before there was any result.

You may have heard the saying that “what we focus on expands”. It is true. I have watched a dear friend who has struggled for years finally be recognized and generously rewarded. Resilience is a skill that all of us can develop. What do you see? Is your glass half full or half empty? Most of us know what it is like to be around a chronic complainer who sees the world as out to get them and wonder why nothing changes. In contrast we are inspired to know someone who keeps going in tough times despite the odds. It is no secret, tough times happen to good people. Life happens to all of us. The only choice we have is how we show up. To maintain a winning attitude create strategies and habits to support the champion who lives inside you. Here are a few suggestions:

Royal LePage Hospice Ski Day 2014 was a landmark year for Hospice Georgian Triangle as they, along with a grateful community, celebrated the opening of the beautiful Campbell House. While extremely thankful to all for support and donations which saw the successful completion of the new facility, HGT still requires our ongoing support to continue to provide the wonderful care and programs we have come to expect from this amazing organization. Community events throughout the year are a huge part of the annual fundraising campaign and thanks to wonderful partners like Royal LePage, sponsors and participants, the 30th Anniversary of Hospice Ski Day at Craigleith Ski Club was an overwhelming success! The Lessons I’ve learned Recently I was spending time with someone who had been hospitalized due to a heart attack. In talking about the events, she shared with me what it is like to get older. She described how some parts don’t work anymore and some aches just never seem to go away. After chatting for a few moments, she commented on how well everyone had treated her during her stay in hospital. She commented on the food as being quite good and always more than she could eat. Once transferred out of the hospital, she shared how grateful she is to be able to transition in Collingwood before hopefully going home. I was reminded of how easy it is to complain about everything, including this weather! How easy it is to complain of the cold and illnesses this time of the year brings. Oh yes did I mention it’s tax time…again? However, listening, observing and being present with people with severe illness, has taught me to appreciate each day as a gift. To be with someone when they make you feel as the most important person in the world is an awesome feeling. In spending time with this person, I realized how important it is to live life with a sense of gratitude as she does. She has the right attitude and she shares a grateful attitude with all with whom she comes in contact. It’s easy to complain and we know of many who do. You can’t change them, they have to change themselves. Some of the lessons I’ve learned is to start each day with a grateful heart. Say a prayer of thanksgiving for all you have, not what you don’t have. Be appreciative of your friends and family. They’ll appreciate you more… Cherish the smile and laughter of a child and begin to live your life through the eyes of a child again. Don’t act your age! When illness strikes, all you will have is your friends, your faith, your memories and your wishful heart to restored good health. Find your purpose in helping others. Live your life with purpose on purpose and you may find as my friend has, true contentment with a life well lived. Brian A. Jill Doble, President of the Sound Investment Choir presented Joy Fleury, Executive Director of Habitat South Georgian Bay, with a cheque representing the shared proceeds from their recent Benefit Concert. Pianist Robert Hall of Laurentian University and Henry Janzen of the University of Guelph presented a delightful repertoire of classical music at a fundraiser hosted by the Sound Investment Community Choir on January 24th. This opportunity was initiated by Maestro John Wervers, the Music Director of the Sound Investment Community Choir, as a fund raiser both for the choir and Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay, which is undertaking to build two new homes here in Collingwood this year. Established in 2002, Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay is a non-profit, faithbased housing organization. They welcome all people without discrimination to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with hard-working families living in substandard housing. Families purchase Habitat homes through a nodown payment, no-interest mortgage with payments set at 25 percent of gross income. This solution not only helps to provide housing for families in need, it enables them to build assets, reduce their dependence on other forms of social assistance and break the cycle of poverty. Since their beginning they have built 9 homes in South Georgian Bay. All of the administrative costs are paid for by the operation of our ReStore located at 155 Sandford Fleming Drive in Collingwood. Habitat ReStores sell quality new and used donated building materials and other products. For more information on getting involved with Habitat for Humanity, please contact 705-446-9542 or info@habitatgeorgianbay.ca. Submitted by: Jill Doble

manfred

Handsome Manfred is a 4 year old cat that was found at GTHS’ door last October. Abandoned with his sister Bertha, Manfred is nothing but a cuddle bug. He loves pats and scratches, and so desperately wants a forever home to call his own. If you are looking for a feline friend to keep you company, please come to the GTHS Shelter to meet Manfred. He is patiently waiting!

The shovel is in the ground for the Wendat Seniors Residence in Penetanguishene After nearly two years of submissions, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care gave Wendat the go-ahead for construction of their assisted living facility for low income seniors. The $3.2 million facility is expected to be complete by fall 2015 and is being paid for entirely by donations. It will house 23 frail seniors of low income who require supports such as meals, housekeeping, social activation, personal support assistance and transportation all for a low monthly cost of $950 per resident.

bertha

Sweet and beautiful Bertha is snuggly and affectionate. This 5 year old cat was abandoned at GTHS’ door last October with her brother Manfred. She loves to lounge about, receive her daily dose of attention and is content to just be near you. She loves her human companions and hopes to find a forever friend soon. Please stop by the Shelter to meet Bertha today!

Foundation work began on site at 44 Dufferin St. in Penetanguishene on December 2nd, 2014 . “Support for the project is growing” claims Executive Director, Lorna Tomlinson. “Of course there is still a way to go to reach our fundraising target, but it is wonderful to see the community express their caring for local seniors. Hopefully, more donations will come in to complete the project.” For more information: 705-526-9248 | wendatprograms.com Submitted by: Lorna Tomlinson

Collingwood has a new baby store In 2009, Tessa Snider opened an eco-friendly baby shop in downtown Owen Sound. Five years, two babies of her own, and thousands of happy customers later, Tessa has opened a second location of her successful baby business in the town of Collingwood. “I have been proud and honoured to be a part of the lives of so many families as they have multiplied and grown,” says Tessa. “The continued support of our very loyal customers continues to amaze me. My understanding of the joys (and difficulties) of pregnancy, birth, and all that follows deepened with the arrival of my son & daughter, and I have learned so much from the stories of Sweetpea parents and grandparents.” Sweetpea Wholesome Baby aims to be a store where customers are looked after in a way “you just don’t get from a big box store,” Tessa says. Free gift wrapping with every purchase, nursing bra fittings, and a baby gift registry are some of the perks her customers enjoy, but it’s more than that, she says. “Our customers lead busy lives, parents are sleep deprived, but many are increasingly aware of better, safer alternatives for their children. They shop with us and are confident that we’ve done the research, and can explain the ins and outs of what they’re purchasing.” Tessa works hard to source as many Canadian-made, and even locally-made products as she can, even though she says “it’s a challenge”. Organic baby clothing used to be harder to find, she says, and she sees it as a positive sign that it has become more readily available. “What that means is that customers want it. People are making formerly unsustainable industries shift and improve by using their purchasing power and demanding ethical alternatives.” Tessa’s store at Cranberry Mews has been open since mid-December, and is continuing to expand and grow. “We have been very interested to meet local parents and grandparents, and find out what they are needing most,” she says, “We aim to have really special gift items you won’t find anywhere else, with a good selection of the more practical things families need.” And they do. From solid wood nursery furniture to cloth diapers, maternity wear to teething necklaces, the selection is excellent and the service is warm and friendly. When asked what she loves most about her business, Tessa doesn’t hesitate. “The babies!” she says with a grin, “Definitely the babies.” 10 Keith Ave., Unit 102 Collingwood (Cranberry Mews) Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm 705-445-0007 | www.SweetpeaWholesomeBaby.com Submitted by: Tessa Snidert

Laughing up furballs for our four legged friends The audience at the sold out Gayety Theatre for Comics Fur A Cause was literally kept laughing so hard that I’m certain a few patrons even laughed up furballs! This comedy extravaganza, organized and hosted by Yuk Yuk’s comedian Chris Quigley and including 10 of his comic friends, was in support of Furry Friends Animal Rescue (Collingwood division), a wonderful volunteer driven charity that suffered a heart breaking robbery just prior to Christmas with cash & goods stolen from their store. Thanks to all the amazingly funny performers, sponsors, and all those who came out in support of Furry Friends. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

The HTI Healing Touch Certificate program was developed as a Nursing Continuing Education program in 1989 by the American Holistic Nurses Association Education (AHNA) Committee and brought to life by combining the work of Colorado Nurse Janet Mentgen, and the influence of leaders in the field of energy –based healing at that time. Scotiabank makes their 3rd installment to a $100,000 pledge to the Collingwood G&M Hospital Foundation Scotiabank’s Commercial Relationship Manager, Tim Schlitt and Senior Creditor Solutions Manager, Thomas Bristow visited the Collingwood G&M Hospital to present their third installment of a $100,000 pledge (to be paid over five years) in support of the New Age of Care campaign. This campaign brought a fleet of state of the art diagnostic imaging equipment to the Collingwood Hospital and most recently covered the renovations and replacement of equipment in the Hospital’s Mammography Suite. Investments like Scotiabank’s have allowed advanced technology in women’s health to be at our local hospital.

What’s more Canadian than this? The Collingwood Optimist Club’s Harbour Hockey Classic, a hugely successful day of great ‘four on four pond hockey’ in the Collingwood harbour is just about as Canadian as it gets! Hockey players of all ages, shapes, sizes and levels of ability strapped on the skates and had a blast in this informal shinny tournament. The team Hockey Night In Essa sponsored by the Hon. Dr. Kellie Leitch, MP emerged as tournament champions but the real winner on the day was Collingwood General & Marine Hospital who will receive the net proceeds from this outstanding fundraiser! Volunteers needed in Collingwood this April for the Canadian Cancer Society Cancer does not discriminate. It has taken our brothers and sisters, our mothers and fathers, our children and our friends. Cancer is relentless. By applying to volunteer or organize a workplace fundraiser you’ll be helping us fight back against cancer. We need your help to recruit volunteers and workplace champions to help us fight back with their time. When you help to organize or sell daffodil pins (by donation) or organize a fundraiser at your workplace during April, you help save the lives of those around you. Thanks to the hard work and generosity of volunteers and donors in Collingwood and across the province, we have more impact against more cancer in more communities than any other cancer charity in Canada. Yet there is still so much more we need to do. The money raised during Daffodil Month helps us fight back against cancer. In Collingwood we fight back by: doing everything we can to prevent cancer, funding research to outsmart cancer, empowering, informing and supporting Canadians living with cancer, advocating for public policies to improve the health of Canadians, transport patients (including families with children) from Collingwood to treatment facilities. Your workplace can join the nation-wide movement by helping raise funds through our Workplace Campaign or by volunteering a few hours of your time this April. Workplace fundraising events are incredibly fun, build workplace spirit and foster leadership skills, while raising money for a cause that your friends, family and co-workers care about. Here are a few ideas that you can involve your workplace in; • Yellow desk decorating contest • Bake sale Fridays! • Dress down yellow days $2 to wear your blue jeans to work • Donate your tips if you are a waitress or restaurant, or have a fundraiser pizza night • Help us by selling daffodil pins at your location • Come up with a fun-d-raiser! We provide you with everything you need to make your fundraiser a success! With your help, we will beat this disease. Please email jwright@ontario.cancer or share with a friend, co-worker or family member that might be interested. Thank you!
