Rocks + Water + Trees + Sky = Awesome Art

Over 120 items on the menu. Always fresh cooked food.

The students and staff of Connaught Public School welcomed family and members of the community to an art show celebrating our beautiful Georgian Bay region. Each class had dedicated art work from different art styles on display, along with a slide show. Students worked diligently to produce wonderful, unique and creative art masterpieces. The results were simply outstanding and leave no doubt that Connaught has many “budding” artists! Kudos! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Design outdoor spaces to complement you When it comes to investing in beauty, the exterior of your home is just as important as the interior. Personalized outdoor spaces are such popular venues for social gatherings, and offer a beautiful place to lounge with family and entertain friends. By adding hard and soft landscaping, you can create a stylish and elegant space as unique and individual as you are. You may not need a complete installation... just a little sprucing up at your front entrance way, patio or deck. Seasonal planters uniquely designed to your taste and in colours that complement your existing architecture and landscaping, help create that “wow” factor. Seasonal planters are very popular with homeowners and business owners, providing a stunning focal point for all to enjoy.

Housing market trends have seen homeowners focusing more on their investments and preferring to spend hard earned money on their own properties by adding beauty and value, not just inside, but on the outside as well. If you are selling your home, you might want to consider staging. Home staging a property before putting it on the market has quickly become the norm. Homeowners are reaping the financial rewards of this cosmetic enhancement. Investing in beautifying the exterior spaces of a home is just as important as spending money making the interior aesthetically pleasing. First impressions and curbside appeal are essential when listing your home and could make the difference between a quick sale or no sale. At the end of the day, it’s all about blending a desired theme with your personal style. Without a Hitch designs, creates and builds the outdoor living spaces of your dreams. Whether it is a total garden transformation, custom deck, fence or patio, they will ensure your vision becomes a reality. Ava Zaritzky MSW,RSW,CHTP/I

In 2008, Kim Ball pursued Yoga Teacher Training and began her transformation from an Office Desk Jockey to a Yoga Teacher. Currently, she is continuing to expand her knowledge by advancing her studies in Therapeutic Yoga.

Ava Zaritzky has been studying people and life for a very long time. Originally from Montreal, she received her Master of Social Work Degree in 1978 from the University of Toronto. She then worked in Ottawa at the National Defense Medical Centre where she met many fierce warriors, with shrapnelfilled bodies and stories to tell.

Therapeutic Yoga is a gentle way of letting go of chronic pain. Using a unique blend of movements and breathing techniques, you can move toward greater health, a peaceful mind, happiness and ultimately freedom of pain. Kim helps individuals to explore yoga with a special focus on reducing and eliminating aches and pains. She takes a different approach by teaching her students to move in a way that is most optimal for their body. She helps individuals bring more awareness in to their movement patterns and helps them gain a better understanding of what leads to their pain cycles and what they can do to shift that experience. In 2013 Kim opened her own studio, Willow Creek Yoga, which is located 5 kms west of Feversham (25 min. drive from Collingwood). At her home based studio she teaches weekly group classes and private therapeutic sessions. Kim is also mobile in teaching Yoga in nearby towns and offering Yoga@Work. If getting to a yoga class just isn’t feasible she can bring it in to your workplace. You can reach Kim at 519-922-3043 (cell 705-441-3032) or email: willowcreekyoga@hotmail.com.

She later worked in Toronto hospitals on General Medicine, Psychiatry and Surgical Units, where she met more heroes and teachers of strength who were finding their way back from changed lives. Ava felt privileged to advocate with them for their best care and medical needs. She learned that “healing” and “curing” can be very different... but both are important concepts. In 1990, Ava undertook a course of study in HEALING TOUCH that taught the gifts of subtle energy. The goal in Healing Touch is to assist the body to self heal and recover balance in all aspects of our lives (body, mind, emotion, spirit). Ava found a way to blend the best of both worlds - Traditional Social Work WITH Healing Touch; to offer her clients HOLISTIC SOCIAL WORK. She endeavors to be a creative companion to individuals seeking assistance on life’s hills and dales. Ava is an Instructor of the HEALING TOUCH INTERNATIONAL certificate program and works in the Collingwood area. See www.healingtouchcanada.net for more information, or call 705-445-9466.

Maplelicious Fun The Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival began in 1966 and has grown to the second largest festival of its kind held in Ontario. This outstanding celebration of one of our nation’s sweetest treasures takes place in mid-April of every year and displays a variety of maple products from producers throughout the region. In addition to the scrumptious maple syrup the event is home to many other attractions: a midway, a craft and quilt show at the arena, and pony rides. Queen Street and Maria Street turn into a huge shopping market where vendors sell maple products, food, crafts and other products along the streets. Photos: Selena Blais | Info: www.springwater.ca

Alive & Empowered! fter a long winter, spring is finally showing her sunny face. To feel more confident and vibrant I encourage you to follow the 7 Keys to Empowerment:

1. Be kind to yourself - None of us are perfect. Sometimes in life we can get tired and just like the battery in our car we may need a boost. 2. Focus on the positive – Things are not always as they seem. 3. The solution is always there - Just sometimes not visible to us. This is why often to another the solution may seem so obvious and we will even say “why didn’t I think of that”. 4. Don’t beat yourself up. - Life is a journey just like a meandering river. There are times when it is a challenge to hold on and it may be the ride of your life. Other times it may be slow and feel like nothing is happening. 5. Change is futile to resist - Life is full of change and yet most of us cling to what is familiar and safe. Sometimes all we can do is accept what life gives us and keep going. 6. Live in the present moment - Let go of the things that no longer serve you, old expectations and false hopes. 7. Accept yourself - You don’t have to be a certain size or age, be in the right relationship or work long hours. Let go of the myth of imperfection and unworthiness. Rainbows only happen after the storm and for many of us the gift only comes after the challenge. For a free consultation contact Coach Jane, Business Coach and Leadership Development Expert at 705-444-5338 or visit www.awesomecoaching.com Coach Jane Schnurr coaches business leaders and individuals to pursue their dreams and live an awesome life. © Awesome Coaching Enterprises 2014

I was honoured to be a guest on a Rogers TV show called The Common Good, hosted by Michele Lawson of the United Way. This particular show was about how different people come to community service, and how they’re all both needed and extremely valuable – donors, volunteers, staff, sponsors, media, etc. I am proud of all the things that Georgian Life does for many organizations and businesses and it was a pleasure to talk about it “on air.” With a very demanding career and a busy toddler who just wants to spend time with her mommy, I don’t have much time to volunteer these days, but I factor in the ways I can give back in my everyday life, as the owner of a magazine. I worked for non-profit organizations for over 15 years in several capacities before Georgian Life so I am no stranger to the committed, dedicated volunteers and staff of the many organizations that are working towards a better world. If there is something that we should know about - please tell us! You can always submit your events online for free www.georgianlife.ca. If submitted on time, before going to print, those events will be published in Georgian Life as well. This also puts the event onto “my radar” and will be considered for coverage by myself or a photographer. We cover up to 40 events a month so why not yours??? We also offer a 50/50 Advertising to charities which is a very affordable way to get the word out about upcoming events, etc. And we are always looking for editorial content that is of interest to our readers. I welcome your calls or emails! I can be reached at info@georgianlife.ca or 705-445-6887. Story: Selena Blais

Jennifer Lawton - Visual Artist

Rose Brown - Paying it forward

Award Winning Artist, Jennifer Lawton, has moved into Wasaga Beach recently, and opened her studio locally. Originally from Toronto, Jennifer spent 25 years teaching art and photography in the Thousand Islands Area, as well as in Canberra, Australia, and Giverny, France. She has travelled extensively throughout Europe, Singapore, Australia, The United States and the Caribbean, and her paintings reflect the history of styles, and variety of locations.

Rose Brown has returned to her hometown of Collingwood. She picked up a brush and canvas 7 years ago and was inspired to create. She opened a studio in the west end of Toronto and soon developed a loyal following. She has shown at the Arta Gallery in the Distillery District many times. Her work has also been commissioned by several offices in downtown Toronto.

Recently Jennifer has been doing extra-large commissions (up to 5’ x 10’), as well as personal paintings for those who want something to represent “their world” in their homes or cottages. Subjects range from large florals and still life to Georgian Bay waterscapes; or multiple images of urban cities to micro inspections of candy wrappers! Her work hangs in corporate offices, schools and Toronto City Hall, as well as private homes. She welcomes commissions to paint personal images important to her clients. To view her work go to: www.jenniferlawton.com or contact her at 705-352-2008.

14

Rose strongly believes in “paying it forward”. She ensures a percentage of sales from her artwork goes to charity. This not only creates a better community, it creates a genuine enlightenment. Rose’s inaugural Collingwood Art Show will be held May 3, 2014 at 179 Hurontario St. between 5pm and 9pm. The Alzheimer’s Society will be fundraising opening night. Thanks to Appealing Environments Rock Shop and Mad Dog Cafe. Please contact Rose at: rbstudios.rose@gmail.com or 416-543-9733.

Parkinson’s Cut-a-thon

Y Ride For Strong Kids

Thanks to Sam and the team at La Moda who along with stylists from other area salons volunteered their time and talent once again to make this year’s Parkinson’s Cut-a-thon a success. It’s a wonderful opportunity for clients to get a new cut and style for spring at an unbelievable price and have the proceeds benefit such a worthy cause. Thanks to everyone who supported this annual initiative! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

The 5th Annual Y Ride at the Collingwood YMCA was 6 hours of nonstop music, entertainment and sweat! Over 250 people pedalled their hearts out and raised in excess of $43,000. Funds raised go to the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Strong Kids Campaign. These much needed funds enable families, children, youth and adults to participate in recreation and physical activity that promotes healthy living. It’s easy to help keep your community active and build healthy communities. Thanks to lead sponsor Collingwood Dental Centre for their wonderful support. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

It’s time to be a “little” different Have you ever noticed in life it’s the “little” things that make the biggest difference in our lives? For an example, a “little” dent caused by a careless grocery store shopper into the door of your used car in the parking lot may go unnoticed for days. However that same amount of damage inflicted in your new car purchase and the day will never be quite the same. How about the “little” extra second someone leaves the four-way stop ahead of you, out of turn and your day may never quite be the same. As you go through life remember, the person that seems inconsiderate at a stop sign may have just received word of an ailing child or parent. The hospital is filled with seemingly healthy people yesterday and they are in ICU today. I was reminded recently of something I had shared with a friend during my wife’s illness. At the time it seemed just a little advice which came to me almost instinctively. However my friend shared that taking a “little” time to comfort them, when I was the one they wanted to comfort, made a significant impact on them. Something they shared they would never forget. So my question: how do we slow down long enough to understand and realize it’s the “little” extra things we do that have the greatest impact? I believe we have to be intentional about slowing our day and our lives down keeping in mind what is truly important. This past weekend I enjoyed watching Granny (Marion) as she is known to us, interact with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During their exchanges of conversation and interaction it became evident the little time shared was a most precious gift. She commented to me earlier today how special it was to spend a “little” time with everyone Sunday. Inviting someone to dinner and sharing your day can be a rewarding experience.

A Night of Chocolate Naturopathic doctors Aranka Jones and Shelby Worts, along with culinary nutritionist Jordan Swartz hosted an evening workshop at the Collingwood Food Co-Op where they shared some of their favourite chocolate recipes. The attendees learned about the health benefits of chocolate, how raw is different from processed, and why it is important to purchase fair trade chocolate. Everyone had the opportunity to sample each divine dish as it was made right before their eyes and recipes were included so that participants could go home and make their favourites for friends & family. A great evening of chocolate delights, and just in time for Easter! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Although we may take the little things in life for granted, we really should consider the impact the “little things” have on other’s lives. Taking time to send a hand written card by remembering a birthday may seem ordinary, but remembering the date when someone’s loved one passed away five years ago is “extraordinary”. Taking a little time to acknowledge this past event is a “little” extra that will make you a “little” different. I am sure we can all think of the “little” things that make the biggest changes in our lives. I am convinced however it’s the “little extra” in “extraordinary” that makes the most significant and lasting change in our lives. So summer is just around the corner… “FINALLY” the flowers are popping their “little” shoots through the soil. What a difference a few months of warming weather can make. Take a “little” more time and stop and smell the roses and be a “little” less stressed! Be different!!! Brian A. With a programmable thermostat, you can save energy without sacrificing comfort Many heating and cooling systems have manual thermostats, where you have to physically re-set the thermostat every time you want to change the temperature. That works—as long as you remember to do it. But what happens if you turn it up when you get out of bed, then forget to turn it down when you head to work? Programmable thermostats make it easier to control your heating system and your energy bills. A programmable thermostat works automatically: you set it once and it will continue to adjust the temperature for you automatically. You can set it to turn down your heat to 16ºC every evening when you go to bed and back up to 21ºC in the morning before you get out of bed, so it’s comfortable when you get up. You can choose the times and temperatures that best suit your family or your business. Keep in mind, though, that heating costs rise about five per cent for every degree above 20°C that you set your thermostat. Most people are comfortable: • sitting reading or watching TV at 21ºC • working around the house at 20ºC, and • sleeping at 16ºC.

The key is to establish a regular program that automatically reduces your heating (and cooling, if you have it) at those times when you don’t need as much. Depending on where you live, simply turning the heat down from 21ºC to 16ºC at night could save you as much as 10 per cent on your energy bills. You’ll save even more if you also turn it down when you are out at work or away on vacation (stick with 16ºC as your lowest temperature to ensure your plumbing won’t freeze). The type of programmable thermostat you need depends on how your home is heated: • Gas, oil or electric central heating means you need a single low-voltage thermostat.

• If you have a cooling system as well, remember to choose a programmable thermostat that will control both your heating and air conditioning. Collus PowerStream customers who have central AC can participate in the peaksaverPLUS program, where they will receive a touch screen programmable thermostat installed in their home for free. Plus they will receive an in-home energy display that instantly tells you how much electricity your whole home is using. You can find out more at www.CollusPowerStream.ca/ peaksaverPLUS Residents who have electric baseboard heaters can download coupons for programmable thermostats from www.CollusPowerStream.ca/COUPONS and save $10 on 1-2 packs or $30 on multipacks of 3 or more.

• Electric baseboard heaters, require line-voltage thermostats for each unit. • Heat pumps or hybrid systems - a combination of electricity and oil, for example - may require a special unit: please check with your heating contractor or supplier.

Casino Royale Bay Haven Senior Care Community recently held its annual theme day for its residents, who enjoyed seeing the staff dressed up in the spirit of this year’s theme ‘Casino Royale’. Lunch served that day included ‘Clam Casino Soup’, ‘High Roller Wraps’ and ‘Caesar’s Palace Salad’. In the morning, residents were able to dress up and have makeup done to take glamour shots with Jeff White Photography. They loved getting dressed up and as you can see from the photos, they were in the spirit of the day! In the afternoon, musical entertainment by a local Elvis Tribute Artist was well-received…as were the poker chip cookies served during it! Lastly, casino games such as black jack, Plinko and a horse race game rounded out the day. Photos: Jeff White Photography

The Importance of Senior Nutrition The Challenges Of Hunger And Under-Nutrition Among Canada’s Aging Population More than 1 in 2 seniors in the care of others are at risk for under- or mal-nutrition (Mayo Clinic/American Dietetic Association). Malnutrition is the lack of proper nutrition, not necessarily a lack of food. Detecting malnutrition in seniors may be difficult, and even seniors who eat enough may be eating the wrong foods to keep themselves healthy. At Comfort Keepers®, they help seniors live healthy, independent lives. That’s why they have created an initiative to address senior nutrition issues. As seniors age and change, so do their nutritional needs. So keeping them properly fed and healthy makes a real difference in their quality of life. As a caregiver or family member, you need to be on the lookout for signs and symptoms of hunger or malnutrition in older adults. Here are some ways to monitor the nutrition of seniors in your care:

Mother’s Day Brunch Buffet Sunday May 11th 10am-3pm $24.99 adults $12.99 child 12 and under

Weekly line up

• Watch for physical problems such as poor wound healing, easy bruising and dental difficulties. • Keep track of weight loss which may require purchasing a home scale or transporting to the doctor’s office for weight checks when the individual is unable to stand without assistance. • Pay close attention to seniors’ eating habits and ask them to tell you where and when they eat, but don’t rely on self-reports alone. Since Comfort Keepers® often spend mealtimes with seniors at home, they may have a better idea of normal eating habits. • Suggest family members visit during mealtimes which can improve a senior’s consumption. If a senior lives alone, make sure you know who is buying his or her food.

• Know what medications an older loved one takes and how often they can affect appetite and digestion. Use the resources available through your local retail pharmacist to check for drug nutrient interactions or possible side effects of prescribed medications. • If there are medical questions regarding nutrition, medication and health, speak with doctors about tests that can help identify chronic malnutrition or other nutrition-related problems. • You can help fight senior hunger and malnutrition by donating non-perishable food items to your local participating Comfort Keepers office. A 1/18 scale diecast tow truck that I photographed in such a way as to make it appear full size. Its a 1931 Ford Model A and goes nicely with the background of the old buildings of Collingwood. I think the photo would look exactly the same had it actually been taken in the late 1930s considering the weathering of the truck. Submitted by: Paul Mitchell Georgian Life • May 2014

Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club Swings into 50th Year! Thanks to the foresight of four bridge buddies way back in 1963, the Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club was born. Over a game of bridge, Dr. Bob Storey, Ted McIntosh, Charlie Crysler and Bill Carswell saw an opportunity to bid on a golf course being built by Bob Smart and Joe Perofski on the Greisbach dairy farm. Starting with a modest down payment of $25,000, the club has evolved to the fine facility it is today, boasting an active membership of over 700 members. A new book, “A Celebration of Golf. The 50 Year History of Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club”, written by member Tom Lamont, was released in early April. This book details the fascinating history of the development of the club, and includes interesting stories on the development of Blue, and amusing stories on characters that have made up the spirit of the club over the years. The book is available for sale at the club or Crow’s Nest on Hurontario Street, or for loan at the Collingwood Library. 1964 marks the 50th anniversary of Blue, and promises to be a year of celebration and club activity. April 5th and 6th kicked off the year in fine style at the annual Open House, providing members with the opportunity to sign up for a packed schedule of activities. Hundreds of members enjoyed the occasion, meeting up with their friends, and looking forward to the pending exciting golf season.

The highlight of the year will be the 50th Anniversary birthday bash, planned to be the biggest party at Blue ever. Members will dance and dine the night away to the sounds of Louis Lefebre’s band, and will be entertained by many surprise acts. While the membership is quickly filling up, the club will admit up to 25 new members this year at a special initiation price of $2500. Prospective members are invited to call Jim Malley at 705-445-3918 ext 103 for details. As the book indicates, “In choosing a golf course, the quality of the course itself is important. In choosing a golf club, it’s really about the people, and the “people of Blue” have made it the fine and friendly golf course that our members have enjoyed over the past fifty years, and P.S… we enjoy a magnificent golf course built over the past 50 years!” Submitted by: Jim Malley Georgian Life • May 2014

SPRING IS HERE!

Garden like a pro (NC) Developing a love of gardening can be a great way to plant the seed for a healthier lifestyle. The many benefits of a green thumb include consistent exercise, reduced stress and better mental health. In fact, a recent study conducted in Sweden found regular gardening can cut the risk of a heart attack and stroke and prolong life by as much as 30 per cent among a 60plus age group.

For those with chronic health conditions, gardening can be an ideal low-impact exercise done at your own pace. But, before you pull on your work gloves, keep the following tips in mind: Target the right tools: Choose lightweight tools that require less energy to maneuver and get rakes or hoes with extra-long, extendable handles to avoid excessive strain. Also, invest in a small stool or bench to cut down on the need for constant bending and kneeling. Watch the weather: If you suffer from lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, watch the weather report and avoid working outside when pollen and pollutant levels are high - these can trigger a serious lung attack. Watch for signs of a lung attack, like increased coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, or unusual changes in phlegm. See your physician if you notice worsening symptoms and also ask if your medication dosages need an adjustment. Head out of the heat: Avoid gardening during the peak hours of 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun is at its strongest and humidity at its highest. If you must be out during that period, plan to work in the shade and drink plenty of fluids. Also, wear a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 that protects against both UVB and UVA rays. www.newscanada.com

Depave Paradise is a project of Green Communities Canada and our local partners in nine communities. The Environment Network in Collingwood with volunteers within neighbourhoods have been removing unwanted pavement and planting gardens filled with native species in its place. Why Depave? Hard surfaces, such as driveways, parking lots and buildings interrupt the natural water cycle by preventing rain water from soaking into the ground and creating heat sinks; warming up our cities. By removing pavement and replacing it with native plants, and trees we are increasing the infiltration rate, recharging our groundwater supply, and cooling our neighbourhoods.
