The Easter Bunny hopped into Collingwood for his annual visit and had kids and families racing all over the Station Museum grounds and downtown in search of Easter eggs and all kinds of wonderful chocolate treats. One of Collingwood’s most unique boutiques is getting a face lift this month! Hearts and Crafts is changing their name to OneLove: Global-Local-Eco. “We’re excited about the change” says owner Carolina D’Andrea. “I know that a lot of local people really enjoyed our old name, however many tourists and visitors got the impression we were a craft supply store, so we knew we had to make a change.” Carolina worked with her partner Jonny Kearns of Enclave Design, to come up with the new concept. “Our new logo is sleek and sophisticated, with visual references to the environment, yoga and spirituality. We created our own mandala for the sign and logo. It is in the shape of a lotus flower and includes the Flower of Life geometric pattern in the centre. We chose this imagery because it represents our selection of sustainable yoga-inspired clothing, our natural body products and also our fair trade items.” To celebrate the name change and the launch of their new e-commerce site shoponelove.ca, OneLove will be running promotions and discounts through the month of May. Make sure to stop by and check out their beautiful selection of summer fashions coming out soon, their address is 66 Hurontario St. Collingwood. Submitted by: Carolina D’Andrea

Tips for Hanging your Art When hanging a single piece of art, there are some helpful guidelines that will bring the best results. Here are a few tips: When hanging a piece of art over a piece of furniture, don’t space them more than six inches apart. This will help create unity rather than discord. If you are hanging art in a stairway, use removable painter’s tape to mimic the angle of the stairs so frames are at the same angle. Finally, when hanging any art, hang at eye level. Keep in mind that eye level is different when walking down a hall than it is sitting in the dining room.
GERARD SERRE, AT CHARTWELL SINCE 2014. It’s been one year since Gerard decided to move out of his house and into one of our residences. Read the whole story and discover why he chose to write the next chapter at Chartwell.
It is most common to see pairs of framed art hanging side by side, but on tall, narrow walls, they may look best hanging one on top of the other. With two story rooms and vaulted ceilings being so popular, there are plenty of opportunities to go up the wall with art. Pairs can also be hung diagonally in a stairway. Pairs don’t necessarily have to remain together. Split them up with one on either side of a mirror or armoire to add a new dimension to your space. Each piece of a matched set of art is typically framed identically and hung in a structured layout. Of course you can always hang pieces more randomly if that is your style. You can display them with even spacing between each one. A current trend is hanging a row of matching frames side by side across a wall with little or no space between them. When hanging odd number of pieces you can still have structure, such as two frames centered over three frames, again with uniform spacing.
CHARTWELL.COM
Groupings of mixed and matched art and frames, or framed art and mirrors are popular today. Art is framed to suit each individual piece and arranged more casually. Many people like to lay the pieces out on the floor to see the overall balance before committing to making holes in the wall. You can also cut pieces of paper and tape to the wall to experience the final effect. Georgian Frame Gallery

Wine tastes best when shared Nina and David Margesson of Winetasters Collingwood hosted forty members of their wine tasting group at Santini’s Ristorante. The evening started with an introduction by David and then distribution of selected cheeses to each table by Casey Thomson of The Cheese Factory in Thornbury. Participants are asked to nose the wine (lift the wine glass and smell the bouquet) of each of several different wines in glasses in front of them. They will then swirl the wine glass and taste a small portion. Each of the wines has a list of categories on a sheet in which people place their ratings of each wine from various parts of the world. The wine tastings then are repeated after people try several cheeses, which enhances the wine tasting experience. It was fun evening as people met new friends and enjoyed a wonderful dinner from Santini’s afterward. At the next Winetasters evening, May 13th, they will be tasting a selection of California Reds. How to make the decision Life is full of moments that take our breath away and sometimes those moments force us to make some tough choices. Have you ever had to make a big decision and wrestled with your options and waited for the yes’s, the no’s and the maybes to tell you what to do? Often our doubt tells us all the reasons something won’t work. For fun I have listed 4 types of Decision Makers: • The Waffler – goes back and forth and will examine all the reasons for yes, maybe, and no without reaching a conclusion. • The Hammer – makes a quick decision, almost immediately without asking for any input and without all the facts. • The Dreamer – likes to look at the potential and all the future possibilities. This dreamy picture may be very different from reality. • The Doer – takes a healthy look at all three of the above. They will look at the consequences the waffler presents, listen to the immediate response in their gut and be excited about the vision the dreamer presents. Most of us have our preferred way of making decisions that we are most comfortable with. For the decisions that matter it is most helpful to see your choices through the lens of the Doer who sees with clarity, If you still have doubts and are unsure ask others for their viewpoint. Sleeping on it and making a decision with a clear head in the morning helps too! Taking time for friends I am grateful for my friends and those people I have come to know in my life. Most of us have lots of contact with people each day. That is until an illness strikes us or a loved one, then our time often reverts to the care and attention to the sick one. That is of course if you have someone in your life that cares enough to be in your life at this critical time. Many however don’t have anyone to care for them or about them. Transitioning from a home we have known all our lives to a retirement residence or long term care facility must be so daunting for so many. When my mother elected on her own to move to an apartment rather than her home, we were all somewhat relieved that she had made the decision herself. However the process of downsizing was a very hard time for her. In hindsight I think we all could have been much kinder of some of the things we said about tiny treasures she reflected on. As children we were interested in cleaning out the house, for her it was a time to reflect on special memories of friendships, special gifts and travel. It was a time for her to relive the past. I am sorry we didn’t take more time in advance of her moving to listen to her remarkable stories brought on by photographs and reflection of the past. I wish we had invited some of her closest friends first to share in some laughter as she was contemplating her move to a smaller place. She knew very well that she couldn’t take it all with her, but I believe we could have been more understanding and taken more time to help her downsize. As I renovate and contemplate downsizing myself I am flooded with memories of good times and sad times. As you think about your next transition for yourself, a friend or a loved one please take some time to share photographs of travel and friendships. I guess that is why photos at a funeral mean so much. It isn’t about the stuff it’s about our friendships and our family. Take some time for friends. Brian A. Paul Harris Awards The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach hosted their 31st Club Anniversary and annual Paul Harris Awards night at Catch 22 Fresh Market Grill. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary International, a service organization that began in 1905 that currently has well over 1.2 million members worldwide. The Paul Harris Fellow Award is the highest honour a club can bestow on a person, either inside or outside the club. The award therefore acknowledges “service above self” which that individual has offered to their community, their nation or indeed to the world. This year’s Paul Harris Service Award recipients were Dr. Dina Ghobrial, Irene Walker and Todd Young. Rotarians earning a Paul Harris Fellow award this year were Angela Piercey, Andrew Conroy, Walter Borthwick and Kevin de Groot. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Ask Susan
by Susan Dyment
I’m so frustrated i am sticking to my diet but my weight loss is slow, how can I speed it up? Keeping your weight in perspective will help you develop practical, achievable goals. Think about how long it took to gain excess weight. It probably took months or even years. Therefore, it is unrealistic to expect to lose all your excess weight in a few weeks. For example, if you have 50 pounds to lose, a goal of 6 months to 1 year is reasonable. Expecting to lose 50 pounds in 3 months or less is neither practical, nor healthy. If you are a chronic dieter, you have probably noticed how quickly lost weight returns once the dieting stops. A study published in the August issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology demonstrated that those who favour low-calorie crash diets without intending long-term behaviour changes tend to gain the weight back quickly. The results of the study pointed out the importance of behaviour-modification training and exercise when considering a weight-loss program. Such training provides a better guarantee for permanent weight loss. Try to find something that weighs about the same amount as the pounds you have lost. If you have lost more than 5 or 10 pounds, you can go to a gym to find items like 20 pound weights or 5 pound bags of potatoes. Then try to pick up enough items to equal the amount of weight you lost. Think about how heavy it is to carry this weight around the gym or grocery. Then think about how you used to carry this weight around in your body! This should help you realize how much you have accomplished so far. It will also help you think about how much more excess weight you can lose if you stick to your program!

THE ROOF DOCTORS & RENOVATIONS
TIC TOC, The Common Law Clock When talking about common law relationships, most people grasp the idea of cohabitation as being the underlying foundation. However, we’ve all had conversations about common law where one person claims to know all there is to know about this increasingly popular family structure. Unfortunately, these conversations often vary in their versions, leaving us confused and unsure of what it means to be common law. The “When” of common law is the most obvious question and the one that causes the most confusion, and there’s a good reason for that: different statutes define common law differently. So, depending on the issue you’re talking about, different timelines will apply. Here’s a quick breakdown. 1. General Property Rights (i.e. cash, house, car, boat, investments, etc.) Timeline: Maybe Never! Time to dispel the fairly widespread belief that common law partners are automatically entitled to a 50/50 split of property. In Ontario, a common law “spouse” has no right under statute to claim a division of assets that are not in his/her name. Unlike a married individual who has a right to the equal division of all family property under the Family Law Act (subject to some exemptions), an individual living common law who wishes to claim an interest in their spouse’s property must claim unjust enrichment on the basis of a “joint family venture” – a relatively complex set of legal arguments. Simply put, in the breakdown of a common law relationship, property belonging to one is not easily claimed by the other, not without the right facts and circumstances, and a good lawyer. The prime example is the family home. If you lived in the home as a common law spouse but were never been put on title, it doesn’t matter how long you lived there, statute law in Ontario does not give you an automatic right to share in its value. 2. Estates Timeline: Maybe Never! As with general property rights, common law spouses do not have an automatic statute right to each other’s estates. So, if one dies without a will, the other cannot rely on a statute right to share in the value unless he/she claims relief as a dependant under the Succession Law Reform Act. Again, these are comparatively complex
arguments to make and one would be well advised to get a good lawyer to make it stick with a judge. 3. Spousal Support Basic Timeline: 3 years
RESIDENTIAL | COMMERCIAL | AGRICULTURAL
New roof construction or repairs
The Family Law Act allows spouses that have cohabitated for a period of not less than three years, or who have a child together and were in a relationship “of some permanence”, to claim spousal support. So, even if all the factors of entitlement are present, you are not considered a spouse for the purposes of spousal support under statute unless those timelines and related criteria (i.e. a child) are in play.
Ryan Babineau 705-716-6083
4. Income Tax Timeline: 12 months Being in a common law relationship can impact your tax rate and make you eligible to additional benefits not otherwise available to a single person. The definition of “common-law partner” under the federal Income Tax Act is similar to the above mentioned definition of “spouse” under the provincial Family Law Act. However, for the purposes of the taxman (or taxlady, thanks mom), the time period for continuous cohabitation in a conjugal relationship is 12 months, as opposed to 3 years. Therefore, you and your partner could be considered common law after only 12 months when filing your taxes without necessarily reaching the common law threshold in other respects.

5. Health Care Decisions Basic Timeline: 12 months This issue can become important if, due to an accident for instance, one common law partner becomes unable to make his/her own health care decisions. Without a Power of Attorney for personal care, the other partner can only make decisions for the other if he/ she is considered a “spouse”. Under the Health Care Consent Act, common law partners are considered spouses if they are in a conjugal relationship and either (1) have cohabited for at least one year; (2) have a child together; or (3) have entered into a cohabitation agreement together. Spring is here!
GET YOUR HOME & PROPERTY in TIP TOP SHAPE Growing Herbs Growing culinary herbs combines the beauty and fragrance of flowers with the functional use of plants as food. Culinary herbs can be shrubs, bushes, climbers, annuals or perennials. They can be grown in small gardens, in plots with distinctive visual design, in containers or in some cases as field crops. Herbs also make very functional borders. Because there are so many different herbs, the location of the herb garden itself will depend upon the particular plants you grow. If the garden is to be strictly functional, place it close to the kitchen. If grown mainly for ornamental or fragrance purposes, the many textures and hues, foliage shades, and flower colours warrant the placing of the garden in a more conspicuous spot. Herbs can also be used as specimen plants in patio planters, in hanging baskets, or as winter houseplants.

these local businesses can help! Just how safe is your patio deck?
Herbs
It’s the time of year when Canadians throw open their doors and step onto their patio decks for another season of outdoor entertaining and family barbecues. It’s also the time when smart homeowners dedicate a few crucial moments to ensuring that their decks are safe because every year, deck collapses in backyards across North America continue to cause serious injuries and fatalities.
CORIANDER
The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) a trade organization of deck manufacturers, dealers and builders, estimates that 40 million or more decks in North America are more than 20 years old.
Seeds for spices in baking, dressings; tastes and smells like orange leaves in stuffings, curries. Leaves used widely to flavour food.
Some homeowners are avoiding deck repairs and failure by turning to new ‘high tech’ deck systems that are maintenance free, such as the Canadian-made SigmaDek system featuring aerospace aluminum and porcelain components that will not wear out. As part of NADRA’s annual “Check Your Deck” public awareness campaign, they offer homeowners this checklist for patio deck safety: • Examine all areas of your deck for split or decaying wood, particularly where the deck attaches to the house, near the railings and stairs, and all support posts beneath the deck surface where moisture accumulates; • Fasteners such as nails, screws or anchors used during installation can come loose over time. Check to ensure firm connections and repair as needed; • Railings and banisters can get loose and become particularly dangerous due to wear and tear over time. Test them to ensure they are firmly in place; • Examine stairs to ensure each step is solidly in place and as a precaution never clutter stairs with planters, décor or any items that can pose a tripping hazard; • Wood deck coatings are durable but they can wear over time, particularly with the typical extremes of cold and heat in Canada. Examine deck boards for a consistent surface and renew waterproof coating or paint as needed for ongoing protection from the elements;

• Lighting can present a trouble source when debris builds up or when lights become blocked by plants or tree limbs. Check all deck lighting to ensure light covers are not in contact with anything and examine all wiring and electrical cords being used outdoors to ensure a safe connection. Cords that become loose can also present a tripping hazard so check for proper placement as well; • Even safe decks face the risk of damage or collapsing if nearby trees have large limbs that overhang the deck area. Be sure there is no danger that any tree limbs could come in contact with your deck in the event that they break off unexpectedly during a storm or due to age and decay.

What is coworking and why is it steamrolling over traditional workplaces? Coworking is all about sharing – and human nature is to share. We teach our kids to share, retail shops share product space on shelves, restaurants or cafés share food and are gathering places. Healthcare providers share space, so do mechanics, artists, and community centres. Sharing is good for the community, and coworking is the term coined for the shared office space and resources of the business community. Sharing workspace alone is not the ultimate goal of coworking, it’s a breeding ground for opportunities to make new connections and collaborate. Being with others in an open working environment has proven to be the go-to option for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Even larger corporations are actively incorporating coworking concepts into their workspaces. Deskmag is a magazine dedicated to coworking and researching the benefits of shared workspaces. Driving the point home, the research done by Deskmag indicates using coworking spaces increases productivity by 74%, 80% expand their business network, 68% share their knowledge and advice, and there is an 86% increase in social circles, achieving a significant increase in work-life balance. People often feel more accountable and motivated when working around others, “When you’re working solo, sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated. That’s one reason to find a mastermind group, a mentor or an accountability partner. Using a coworking space could be a good way to find this group of people. Since you’re all using the same office, it will be easier to arrange meetings or brainstorming sessions.” Says Karen Martinez, who penned a guest article for Deskmag.

Polar bears raise cold hard cash! Fifty hardy (possibly crazy) dippers braved the elements, the bitter cold and took up the challenge in the 3rd Annual Meridian Collingwood Polar Bear Dip in support of the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation. Dressed in all kinds of colourful outfits they jumped, cannon-balled or anxiously slid through the ice hole into the frigid harbour water assisted by emergency personnel from the Collingwood Fire Department. This year’s event raised $20,000 for cardiac monitors at the hospital. Thanks and congratulations Meridian, sponsors and of course all the frigid fanatics who participated in this wonderful fundraiser. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Business Profile - Beach Dental Hygiene Studio You may ask yourself - Why See an Independent Dental Hygienist?
sasha
In 2007 The Ontario government passed a bill permitting dental hygienists who meet certain criteria to practice independently. Since then, patients from all walks of life, all ages, and those with and without dental insurance have been receiving dental hygiene services from independent practitioners.
Sasha is a four year old German Shepherd/ Rough Collie Mix with an affectionate personality. She is looking for a forever family that will provide her with all the love, attention and exercise she needs!
Independent dental hygienists are trained to assess and treat gum disease and provide a wide range of oral health services. In addition, the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) fee guide is lower than the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) fee guide. Saving money is just one more reason to let an independent dental hygienist put a smile on your face.
SPRITE
Sprite is a three year old cat that was surrendered to GTHS. He enjoys being brushed and fussed over, and can’t get enough play time. Sprite is looking forward to finding his forever home!

A sweet time in Elmvale The Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival is a fundraising day which supports needs within the community. All proceeds from this one day event are turned back to local schools, children’s music programs, library support, arena and community hall projects, girl guides and scouts, as well as helping many other projects where other financial sources are not available. Many volunteers and many, many hours of planning and behind the scenes effort goes into preparing for this day. For many ex-Elmvalites and Georgian Bay Cottagers, the Festival Day develops into a home-coming weekend. What a great time to visit with friends and families as well as have a fun day at the Festival! Photos: mycollingwood.ca | Info: www.emsf.ca

Duntroon Highlands Golf Club announces opening of NEW range and practice facility Last fall, Course Superintendent John Marshall designed and began work on what will become the area’s most outstanding public golf range and short game practice facility. With spectacular views of Nottawasaga Bay and the surrounding countryside of Clearview Township all the way to Wasaga Beach, it will be hard to concentrate on your practice session. The range stretches out to over 300 yards making it hard for even the longest hitters to lose a ball. Head Professional Tony Rubes is especially excited about the short game practice facility. A target green with two greenside bunkers, rough, uneven and tight lies allows golfers to practice all the shots they may encounter on the course. The chipping and pitching areas range from “just off the green” to 60 plus yards. The Grand Opening of the range will take place on Saturday June 20th and will feature a host of exciting events, celebrating the start of a new era at Duntroon Highlands.
