A scary maze of horror The Wasaga Beach Youth Club held their fourth annual Haunted House on October 18th and 19th. Those who dared to enter were scared, spooked and screaming! The youth worked hard for over two months planning each step of the activities from the concept to obtaining all of the materials required and the actual building of the displays. The Wasaga Beach Youth Centre is a free drop in centre for youth between the ages of 12 and 17, it is located at 1621 Mosley St. in Wasaga Beach. Photos: Enrique Miranda

I’m glad to see the elections signs coming down as I type this. With the familiar and new faces of town councils there will be plenty of change in our communities, each one is unique and has its own needs. This month we have a lot to look forward to. November is the start of the holiday season activities including Santa Claus parades, festivals of light and the Christmas craft shows and fairs. We may see our first snow fall and the tire shops will be busy with the change over to winter tires. On November 11th, be sure to attend a service at the Cenotaph in your community to remember and honour the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their lives in the military service.

The Giving Circle Over 35 women gathered at the local home of a dedicated volunteer of the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation, Mandy Macrae. They came from all ages and stages of life with one goal in mind: they wanted to fund a program/service with measureable impact that was focused on a hospital initiative that helped women and children in our community.
Celebrating her seventh anniversary. JENNIFER HOWE, AT CHARTWELL SINCE 2007. It’s been seven years since Jennifer decided to move out of her house and into one of our residences. See the whole story and discover why she chose to write the next chapter at Chartwell. CHARTWELL.COM
Three projects were presented during the evening by doctors and program supervisors. All were outside of the funding priorities of the Hospital, and therefore required private funding. The presentations encompassed a program involving professional development for staff members to assist with their understanding of seniors with dementia, the next addressed emergency preparedness in relation to OB/GYN issues, and third was a proposal for the purchase of equipment for the emergency room that is specialized to the care of women and children. The results of the evening were overwhelming! The Giving Circle members were able to fund not only one project, but part of a second. If you wish to receive further details on this exciting initiative, please contact the Foundation at 705-444-8645. Submittted by: Julie Brown

What’s pink and won’t stop running even in the rain? The determined individuals, teams, patients and survivors who get out every year to run, roll and walk in support of the CIBC Run for the Cure, that’s who! And they are not about to stop running until the necessary funds are raised, the research is successful, and a cure for breast cancer is found. This year’s Collingwood/Town of the Blue Mountains run raised in excess of $144,000! Absolutely awesome! Congratulations to all those who participated. Breast Cancer Can Be Beaten! You can make a difference without spending a dime In Simcoe County, our children have unlimited opportunities. They go to schools with access to libraries and gymnasiums, computers and science equipment. It is easy to take for granted that they have supplies like desks and blackboards provided to them. Throughout the world, many students aren’t as fortunate. In many parts of Africa, these supplies don’t exist, just a dedicated teacher. The Rotary Clubs of Collingwood, South Georgian Bay, Alliston, Barrie/Huronia and the new Rotaract Club of Collingwood, along with the YMCA of Simcoe/ Muskoka, have paired up with the Simcoe County District School Board to provide these valuable items to communities in South Africa. When a Simcoe County school is closed or re-furbished, some of the equipment is designated as surplus and sent to a warehouse for future needs. A portion of the equipment ends up being thrown out, but instead, the Board has offered to donate some of the surplus equipment to these African communities. Aside from furniture and equipment, we are hoping to gather 20,000 books to send overseas. Volunteers from the YMCA and Rotary clubs will pack and ship them to a school in South Africa. Textbooks, children’s books and novels, any type of book that might be found in an Ontario elementary school is welcome. Each would have its own purpose in a child’s education. Used computers will also be accepted, but they must be in good working order to ensure students have the opportunity to learn computer skills necessary for future opportunities. Help us reach our goal and drop off your donations at the Barrie YMCA or Collingwood YMCA until November 12th, 2014. Thank you to the Simcoe County District School Board for their donation of surplus equipment from schools that have been closed or re-furbished. This project will allow unused desks, chairs, shelves and books to go to African children that really need them. Hill and Bay showcasing true flavours of food Hill and Bay is the latest addition to the Georgian Triangle’s must-try upscale food experience. With the goal of creating a lasting impression on your taste buds, the company uses locally sourced foods. The concept of being ‘farm-to-table’ is enhanced by certified organic seasonal vegetables and fruits, hormone-free free-range animals, Canadian farmed fish, locally manufactured dairy products and a lot of heart in the menu creation. Audi Stadis, the owner, firmly believes that there is merit to support “real” foods which her company utilizes. The company movement away from GMO’s serves to showcase the true flavour of food. Styrofoam-tasting produce is promptly dismissed from entering the kitchen. Every effort is made to source food that will appeal to our senses – colour, textures, smell, taste, etc. Of course, since there aren’t too many exotic home-grown fruits in Canada, an honest effort is made to support imported organic growers and their product. Hill and Bay’s menu is diversified and incorporates recipes from around the world. Thai citrusy lemongrass shrimp soup might be the perfect starter to a fabulous heavier meal of Vietnamese organic chicken meatloaf with a cross-cultural twang of local micro-brewery beer, mustard and maple sauce. Doesn’t that sound like a fabulous way to round out a day of skiing while supporting your waistline and the local economy? Hill and Bay offers private in-home, corporate and event catering. Call for availability. They are ready to ‘wow’ you! hillandbay.ca | 705-999-FOOD (3663)

This campaign supports African grandmothers and their orphaned grandchildren through grassroots projects directly in their local communities. Although the HIV-AIDS pandemic is in decline because of increased education and drug availability, there is still much support which is needed as the grassroots groups are the lifelines for their communities. Since the inception of their group, the GBGrannies have raised over $56,000 in support of the grandmothers in Africa through the Stephen Lewis Foundation. When autumn leaves start to fall...
Is Looking for Board Members
“The falling leaves drift by the window, the autumn leaves of red and gold” so goes the time-honoured tune from back in the forties. While the falling leaves may drift by the window, in this case it was a dazzling array of fall and winter fashions that drifted by my camera lens and the eyes of an appreciative audience at the 5th Annual GNE Autumn Leaves Fashion Show. A great evening of food, fun, music and entertainment as lovely local models ‘all dolled up’ by area clothing retailers worked the runway. And of course having a crew of great looking ‘hunky’ firefighters on hand didn’t hurt! So be sure to get out to our local clothing stores and check out their great selection before we ‘hear old winter’s song’. Congratulations to Yvonne, Felicity, Maxine, all the GNE staff and volunteers on another successful fundraiser! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
Hope Haven Therapeutic Riding Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization that offers a variety of programs to individuals with disabilities and their families. Our facility is located on 142 acres of beautiful farmland in the Grey Highlands just outside of Markdale and our participants and volunteers reside in many of the communities in Grey County and the Georgian Triangle area including Collingwood, Owen Sound, Hanover, Flesherton and many towns in between. Our experience at Hope Haven has made us aware that our participants feel the need to connect, the need to achieve, the need to experience success and the opportunity to grow. Our mission is to provide a transformative experience through our unique programs that give our participants the opportunity to address those needs and for each and every rider to explore their potential at a pace that is suited to them. We are excited about the period of growth we are currently experiencing and are actively recruiting to fill positions on our Board of Directors. We are looking for distinctive individuals to assist us through this dynamic time who are willing to share the experience they have gained and who are willing to dedicate time and effort to help us make things happen. In the interest of creating a fully complimented board we are interested in adding members who have experience in board governance, skills related to fund raising, social media and communications as well as building awareness and networking throughout the communities in the Georgian Triangle and outlying areas. Sacrifices we make as parents aren’t always the best decisions I was reflecting the other day about how as parents we have made decisions to involve or not to involve our children in the day-to-day life experiences. I can see now how these decisions may have dramatically affected their outlook on life. Let me give you an example. When our children were growing up they rarely saw their parents argue in front of them, not that we didn’t have our share of disagreements. My wife Donna and I had agreed to support one another in the presence of our children. It was important to us that they not see us angry or in disagreement no matter the subject. We rarely discussed money because no doubt that could have easily lead to a heated discussion most of the time. “Money …what money?” Sacrifices have been made for sure that our children were never quite aware of… until today. I sometimes think our desire to have the very best for our children, better than we had it and involve them in everything they could be involved in despite the financial hardship it might bring, could be leading our children into trouble further along in life.
think there needs to be a frankness of discussions about life…especially money. They need to understand why financially they can’t be involved in every activity going, why they can’t have a new cell phone, why there is no money to have the latest of everything. As parents and grandparents, it’s a natural desire to sacrifice for our children. Our parents did it for us and their parents did it for them. As a grandparent I have started to see things differently and I now make sure that our children understand things in our marriage were anything but perfect. It’s time to help them understand how involving their children in real life decisions is crucial to a proper outlook on life…a real life view especially when it comes to talking about money. For information on upcoming educational seminars “Talking about money with your children” please contact: Brian@TAPadvantage.ca Brian A. McMillan CFP, CLU, CH.F.C, is a Life Transition Financial Advisor / Principal of Team Approach Planning in Collingwood.
The challenge of not involving our children in real life decisions, is our children begin to look for a perfect marriage in a perfect world in absence of anything to suggest otherwise. Today, I think it’s important as a parent to involve our children and I

Slipping on the red pumps and strutting their stuff Normally this headline would bring to mind ladies getting ready for a girls night out but in this case it was over 100 men of all ages and from all walks of life. These strapping fellas paraded throughout Downtown Collingwood in an effort to raise money, awareness and send an important message that domestic violence exists in our community and is not to be tolerated. The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Georgian Triangle event in support of My Friends House, now in its 3rd year, was a fantastic success raising over $37,000 towards the annual fundraising goal of $180,000. “Bread Heaven” awaits you Finally! A true Artisan Bakery right here in Collingwood. After perfecting his craft, owner and baker Glenn Dickson settled on Collingwood as the perfect location to offer fresh baked bread, cookies and scones. Using local organic flour and ingredients is important to Glenn, and Collingwood has the best to offer. “All of my flour is local and organic. I try to use as many local ingredients as possible in order to showcase the best this area has to offer.” Along with wife Lesley and son Collin, opening in the Cranberry Mews Mall on Hwy 26 was sort of a homecoming. The site was Lesley’s family’s historic dairy; Keith and Sons Dairy. More info on the historic dairy can be found at the bakery or on the Georgian Trail interpretive sign #1. Baked fresh daily sourdoughs, whole grain whole wheat loaves, baguettes, cookies and scones will leave you as one customer stated “in bread Heaven!” Weekend offerings change so check them out on facebook for updates. Open Monday to Saturday 8:30 am until 4:00 pm and closed on Sundays.

Four ways homework aids students’ academic achievement Homework provides an opportunity for parents to interact with and understand the content their students are learning so they can provide another means of academic support for students. Memphis Parent writer Glenda Faye PryorJohnson says that, “When your child does homework, you do homework,” and notes that this is an opportunity for parents to model good behavior for their children. Pryor-Johnson also identifies four qualities children develop when they complete homework that can help them become high-achieving students: 1. Responsibility 2. Time management 3. Perseverance 4. Self-esteem While these cannot be measured on standardized tests, perseverance has garnered a lot of attention as an essential
skill for successful students. Regular accomplishments like finishing homework build self-esteem, which aids students’ mental and physical health. Responsibility and time management are highly desirable qualities that benefit students long after they graduate. Submitted by: Karen Wong, Assistant Head Master of Pretty River Academy. The Blue Mountain Village Foundation presented a donation of $5,300 to Elephant Thoughts Educational Outreach. “The Foundation reviewed many applications for funds and all were very deserving,” says Don Braden, President of the Foundation. “We chose to sponsor positions in Elephant Thoughts’ After School Program in the Georgian Triangle to ensure that disadvantaged children can learn and grow..” “The reintroduction of the Elephant Thoughts After School Programs in the Georgian Triangle has been a resounding success. To date nearly 1000 children participated in this flagship program and more schools are booked to launch in the fall. Teachers are expressing gratitude for the program which not only brings more hands-on science into the classroom but helps schools deliver an effective leadership and character building educational piece through the student mentorship component. Thanks to the Blue Mountain Village Foundation for their generous donation to enable Elephant Thoughts to access students through this program for years to come. ” says Jeremy Rhodes Executive Director, Elephant Thoughts Educational Outreach. The Blue Mountain Village Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our local communities through its financial support of registered charitable organizations whose activities provide benefit to the residents of our local communities, with an emphasis on children and family programs. STAY | PLAY | EAT | SHOP STAY | PLAY | EAT | SHOP The Collingwood General & Marine Hospital welcomed the arrival of its new digital mammography unit in October. The new equipment will advance breast imaging for the purpose of breast cancer screening and diagnosis, in both men and women. Image production and interpretation will be more efficient, with images posted directly to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for interpretation by radiologists – no more developing and posting film. There is also a significant reduction in radiation to the patient. By going digital, Radiologists now have additional computer based tools at their disposal to change image contrast and resolution, in order to assist in breast cancer diagnosis. In addition, the G&M Hospital will be applying for accreditation under the Ontario Breast Screening Program to further improve service to patients. The new system also includes the latest technology, Tomosynthesis, also referred to as 3D breast imaging. This technology is especially helpful when diagnosing patients with dense breast tissue or any questionable findings. “Another exciting new addition is that we will now be able to offer breast biopsies under mammography,” says Edith McDonell, Manager of Diagnostic Imaging, who notes that patients had to be referred to RVH for this service in the past. To accommodate this new service a special biopsy chair was also purchased. Renovations to the previous mammography area now includes Ernie Purkis, Board Chair G&M Hospital Foundation, Edith McDonell, a private change room and waiting area for increased patient privacy. Stop and Smell the Roses
hy are we all so uptight? Maybe it is time to be more like our pets and slow down, sniff the roses and enjoy everything that comes onto our path.
As children we just enjoyed life. Life was much simpler. If there was an upset we did our best to sort it out and quickly get back to our “play”. We didn’t worry or hold a grudge. Over time we became responsible adults and as we grew up our appreciation for fun and play shrunk accordingly. We began to value hard work, focusing on that never ending to-do list and doing what was expected of us. We created cultures at work, at home and in our community that were built on what we had learned. Our society is full of people stressed, looking for more and secretly asking themselves “what do I do”. With the pressures of the world sitting on your shoulders it can be really hard to imagine changing anything. For many of us, having fun and taking time to play is what we do only after everything else is done. When you lighten up so will the load you are carrying. Say yes to happiness. The benefits will amaze you. Life is short. Ten years from now it will be those joy filled moments that you will remember and cherish. If your workload feels impossible, ask for help. The first step to changing anything is awareness. I assure you the solution is probably much easier than you think. Butterscotch is a handsome ten year old cat that was found wandering Wasaga Beach in rough shape. Since arriving at GTHS he has received lots of attention to bring him back to good health, including much needed dental surgery. Butterscotch would make the perfect family cat and so desperately wants to find his forever home. If this senior cat could be your next best friend, please come and meet him at the Shelter today!
MISTY Beautiful Misty was left in a carrier at GTHS’ front door. While her story is a bit of a mystery, we know that she is roughly 5 years of age and is an affectionate lady. Misty loves nothing more than some quiet time with a human friend – especially one that will give her scratches and some grooming time. She would make a great addition to any family and we hope you’ll stop by to meet her! Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. To inquire about their availability, or to inquire about other animals available for adoption please contact the Georgian Triangle Humane Society at 705-445-5204 or view their website at www.gths.ca.

PROFESSIONALS HERE TO HELP YOU Healing Touch… Harmony… Peace… Relaxation…
Sheila Bristow - Psychotherapist Not only does your body remember, but the original ‘story’ goes on being told and retold in disguised form – often as powerful emotional and physical reactions or as self damaging, repetitive patterns of behavior. Each of us has experienced a defining moment when we made an assumption about who we are. Our beliefs take root in our childhood when we innocently accept what is presented to us. As we reach adulthood these same beliefs impact our perception of what is possible to do, be or have, our beliefs are accepted without conscious choice. Our limiting beliefs are often manifested as a small voice recorder inside our head that tell us we are NOT enough…smart, good, tall, thin, white, cute, rich…ENOUGH! Often these beliefs become dominant when we are dealing with someone in authority, in a relationship, our parents, our siblings, and group dynamics. How are your limiting beliefs impacting you? Sheila Bristow is a psychotherapist specializing in individual, couples and family therapy, with a primary focus on managing stress. 705-446-4433
HEALING TOUCH is the study of the “HEALING ARTS” where the focus is on choosing WHOLENESS of one’s life. Creating peace of mind, relaxation of the body and development of a compassionate heart. The goal of this work is to discover self healing, which then leads to living a happier, and stress reduced life. One can easily learn how to use their hands to influence their own “Human Energy Biofield”. These techniques are used to promote wellness for self and others, and can also offer pain relief and reduction of anxiety, fatigue, nausea and other side effects of illness. The work is complimentary to traditional medical care and can be safely utilized with everyone from neonates to centenarians. Tips to treat & prevent an uncomfortable dry nose (NC) Have you ever noticed how the insides of your nose become so dry in the winter? At this time of year, levels of humidity are very low, and the moisture around us quickly evaporates. Turning up the heat will not only cause dryer air, but it will also liberate dust, pollen, and other allergens into the home which can inflame the sinuses. “The cold air of winter, in combination with allergens that are being forced out of indoor heating systems, can irritate a person’s nasal cavities,” says Meriem Bouanane, a medical advisor. “There are safe and naturally-sourced solutions to treat and prevent a dry nose, such as nasal irrigation.” Ignoring symptoms like congestion, sneezing, a runny nose, or thick nasal discharge can aggravate lung problems and lead to other issues. These include reducing the senses of smell and taste, increasing the risk of mouth and throat infections, or worsening asthma. Nasal irrigation not only helps to relieve sinus congestion, but according to the hydraSense brand, it is also helpful for alleviating the sinus symptoms of allergic rhinitis. To breathe easy right now, however, take a look at a few tips for your everyday life to make winter far more enjoyable for the whole family: 1. Use a humidifier in your home to add moisture in the air. 2. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water throughout the day. 3. Turn down the heat at night. Keep warm by adding a blanket or two. 4. Use a daily nasal irrigation solution. When used as indicated, the Daily Care line (from hydraSense) helps to reduce excessive nasal dryness caused by dust or dry air. Huron Club Charity Golf for Hospice Georgian Triangle The big-hearted community minded owners and staff of the Huron Club know how to host a great golf tournament in support of a wonderful cause. The fifth annual charity golf tournament in support of Hospice Georgian Triangle was held at Blue Mountain Golf Club, and while I’m not sure how impressive the scores were I know the participants and supporters had a great afternoon of golf, a wonderful dinner and no doubt the net proceeds from the event were graciously and gratefully welcomed by the Hospice. Well done as always! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
Cocktails that Inspire The Purple Hills Arts and Heritage Society hosted a cocktail party to introduce a group of artists from the “Inspired” exhibit to the public. Fright this way... This family orientated Halloween day is a Collingwood tradition. The downtown streets were decked out in all things frightenin from pumpkins and creatures of the night, to the feature attraction, witches and warlocks. There was a cauldron of activities from face painting to pumpkin carving and as the clock struck 3 all the ghosts and goblins, witches and warlocks of all ages gathered at the town hall for a costume contest.
