Quality crafts and community support The Apple Harvest Craft Show was held on October 3rd and 4th in Meaford. This show has become one of the largest in southern Ontario, attracting close to 200 artisans and crafters. Attendees got a head-start on Christmas shopping for unique and special gifts. Each year many new crafters are introduced so the show has something for everyone. You’ll find hand thrown pottery, wooden games and toys, photography, candles, quilting, stained glass, wood working, high end fashions, leather work, stuffed animals, painting, spinning and weaving and handmade jewellery, to mention just a few. Over the years, the Apple Harvest Craft Show has put back hundreds of thousands of dollars into Meaford projects, including the breakwall look-out and pavers, other harbour improvements, and a recent $50,000 contribution to the Meaford Hospital Foundation and the Hospital Campaign. On October 18th, the Georgian Bay Club Foundation (GBCF) completed a $500,000 pledge to the G&M Hospital‘s New Age of Care Campaign but their support didn’t stop there. The GBC Foundation donated an additional $50,000 towards replacing beds at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital, this was beyond their $21,000 final pledge payment. Their generous donation totalled $72,750. The New Age of Care campaign brought a fleet of state of the art diagnostic imaging equipment to the Collingwood Hospital and most recently covered the renovations and replacement of equipment in the Hospital’s Mammography Suite. Investments like the Georgian Bay Club Foundation’s have allowed advanced diagnostic technology to become common tools at our local hospital. In addition to support of the G&M Hospital Foundation, the Georgian Bay Club Foundation provided funding to the Meaford Hospital Foundation and Breaking Down Barriers. The GBC Foundation raises funds through its Annual Charity Golf Tournament held on August 14, 2015. Thank you to the Georgian Bay Club Foundation for their ongoing support. Christmas is Coming! Christmas is right around the corner and brothers Jake and Brendan Quinlan have opened a small business in Collingwood to help with everyone's most procrastinated holiday chore; putting up the Christmas lights and decorations. As new members of the community, Jake and Brendan are excited to bring their years of experience in the home-services industry back home to Canada, gained while operating GoGreen in the southwestern United States since 2009. GoGreen offers LED holiday lighting, pre-lighted garlands and wreaths, rope light wire frame designs including santa, candy canes and more, as well as hanging LED snowflakes and icicle lights. All timers, extension cords, and clips and accessories are included in your up-front written quote. GoGreen rents you the lights and decorations over the holidays, installs them, maintains them, takes them down after the season, and even stores them for you! The lights are all LED and use 90% less energy than the old fashioned incandescent bulbs. The catch with the LED's is that these lights can be expensive to buy which makes the GoGreen program not only convenient, but energy and cost effective as well! GoGreen is also proud to announce that 5% of all proceeds from the business will go towards the local food bank to help those in need over the holiday season. Fall is the time to prepare your roof for winter Now is the time to consider what has to be done to prepare your roof system for the cold weather. A roof inspection every fall can help address issues that could pose problems once the snow flies. The weather is perfect at the beginning of fall to have an expert get up and walk across your roof looking for issues. Here’s what the inspector will look at: THE GUTTERS: When leaves and debris collect in your gutter system, eventually it will create a clog in the downspouts. Rain water will overflow the gutters, damaging your roof, trim and siding. The added weight of the wet leaves and water could also cause your gutters to pull loose from the anchor point or collapse. PROPER INSULATION: The insulation in your home is there to offer a barrier between the heated and/or cooled areas of your home and the outside temperatures. Without proper insulation you can run into a number of issues including a loss of heat in the winter, condensation issues, and even water damage. ANY LEAKS: During the winter months roofs can leak in a number of areas. The most common include those around flashing. A roof inspection will check flashing to make sure you will not be at risk for water seepage throughout the winter. This will prove to be an easy and inexpensive fix compared to the damage caused during a major winter storm. MISSING SHINGLES: During the summer and fall season you can experience winds that are high enough to blow shingles right off your roof. If these missing shingles are not replaced before the snow starts to fall you can be faced with both leaks and insulation issues that can lead to some serious damage throughout the winter. Having missing shingles replaced will maintain the integrity of your roof all winter long. AM Roofing provides free no-obligation estimates for roof replacement/repairs and insulation. Research Vessel Sturgeon conducts binational survey of Lake Huron Each year the U.S. Geological Survey’s research vessel Sturgeon samples the waters of Lake Huron to estimate the numbers of pelagic prey fish, the food that lake trout, salmon and other predator fish rely on. This includes fish like rainbow smelt and bloater chub. The information collected on prey fish abundance is crucial to the management of important sport fisheries by both state and provincial resource agencies on Lake Huron. This research survey lasts up to one month, and includes work throughout the main basin of Lake Huron, Georgian Bay, and North Channel. This survey is collaborative and work occurring in Canadian waters is supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. During late September, the ship visited the ports of Owen Sound and Collingwood before heading north to continue sampling in Georgian Bay and the North Channel.

A ‘hole in one’ for Theatre Collingwood While a couple of duffers no doubt hit holes-in-one, Theatre Collingwood was the big winner as it held it’s third annual Putting for the Arts tournament on the beautiful Cascades Putting Course at Blue Mountain. Eighteen foursomes had fun challenging the course, enjoyed a tremendous after party at Copper Blues and raised much needed dollars in support of Theatre Collingwood’s mission to continue presenting “quality productions, events and educational activities which enrich the cultural life of our community.” Thanks to all who organized, participated and sponsored this great event and always remember to “Put some play in your life!” Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Giving is easy...

My name is Pamela Quirk My mom worked in the RNA program at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital for 10 years so it was a part of my life from childhood. When my father was admitted to the hospital 4 years ago with a heart attack; it was a life and death situation for him. Collingwood General and Marine Hospital provided excellent care and he was given his life back. It was my catalyst to support an organization that meant so much to me. Giving was so easy – I consulted with an insurance specialist, took out a policy that cost me less than my annual typical donation. Over ten years, I will have this policy paid off and it hasn’t impacted my life at all. However, the financial implications to the Hospital are tremendous and will result in a significantly higher gift. Since my parents as well as brother and his family still live in Collingwood and I enjoy coming up here, I wanted to keep the support in this community. I am also very confident in the Foundation’s use of my money. They are excellent stewards and custodians of my support. Please join me in supporting the great work at the Hospital – giving is easy – just call 705-444-8645 or email kerrj@cgmh.on.ca to get started. It affects us all, and your donation could make a difference in life or death.

Thank you Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Foundation www.cgmf.com 12

Retirement income...how much is enough? While attending a retirement income strategies conference recently, I realized there is still much to learn about helping people in retirement. Some of the “rules of thumb” about retirement have come under fire about being overstated. For example, “70% Rule:” as retirees, we should expect to live on 70% of our preretirement income. When the pre-retirement gross income is broken down it often includes things such as CPP payments, RRSP contributions, child rearing costs, mortgage payments, employment expenses, and income taxes. Post retirement often sees many of these reduced or eliminated altogether. The end result is often a much lower net income ratio than the 70% rule of thumb would suggest. Every case needs to be reviewed to see what works for the retiree. Presenter and facilitator of the conference, Peter Wouters, Director, Tax Retirement and Estate Planning, Wealth at Empire Life Investments Inc, shared how to layer income. By establishing future income sources in layers, we can create an income you need from the sources available to you in a most efficient way. He suggests we spend the least flexible income sources as they become available, we should use the least tax-efficient sources in lower tax brackets and work efficiently within the tax brackets. Wouters suggests we are always striving to put the least amount of strain on the next dollar to spend. Establishing income strategies that are tax efficient makes sense. For every dollar you don’t pay in tax is a dollar saved for the future, a strategy to help your savings last longer. I left the conference with a better understanding and a process for helping our clients develop tax efficient income strategies in retirement. Most Canadians are living longer. The challenging part of this of course, is the need for additional dollars to give people more choice in retirement. After all, choice is some of what money can buy…choice of where you live, what you eat and who you eat with. So? How much is enough? If you don’t have a plan, or want to get your plan stress tested then you should sit down with a qualified financial planner and your accountant to better understand your opportunities. At the very least, they can help you to better understand “how much is enough?”

Men: Tips on keeping facial hair fashionable Great beards come with great responsibility. Not only do you have to spend weeks - or in some cases months - growing it out, but you’ve also got to work to keep it hydrated, healthy and strong. The best way to do that? Keep it simple: use organic, non-toxic ingredients packed with beard-boosting nutrients. 1. Exfoliate. When washing your face, make sure you don’t miss the skin under your beard. Dead skin can accumulate fast, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, dirt and sometimes hair - all of which can get trapped in pores and cause breakouts. Try a nutrientpacked organic cleanser that best fits your unique skin type.

PT me!

Princess

I don’t know why but my owners forgot me & left me behind when they moved out. The kind folks here at the GTHS had me professionally groomed and set me up to be a “nanny cat” in the quiet kitten room to make me comfortable. I like people but have a bit of a scared feeling around noisy rough companions. Deep in my heart I know I could be a loving pet to anyone quiet & peaceful who would just give me a little chance to warm up & get to know them. Please come visit soon & ask for me... I’ll be waiting for you. Sincerely, Princess!

Pepper

Are you looking to spice up your life? Well hello there, my name is Pepper! I am a BIG, gorgeous, 2 year old, Cane Corso X with a giant heart filled to the seams with gold smile emoticon. I found my way to The Georgian Triangle Humane Society after being rescued by the amazing people of Animal Rescue Foundation. I am quite the majestic sight to see weighing in at a massive 115 lbs! WOWZA! I am a very sweet girl that loves to be around people and craves affection. I enjoy walks, playing with toys and romping around in the yard. I would do well in a home without children or any other animals as I am a big girl who craves lots of love and needs lots of attention. Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. If you think that we might be the perfect forever friends, please call 705-445-5204 ext 229 or send an email to dogadoptions@gths.ca and set up a time for us to meet and get to know one another.

Wobble a mile in her shoes Well at least that’s what it looks like when a group of men (well intentioned and certainly with their hearts in the right place) slip into red high heels and strut their stuff around Downtown Collingwood in an effort to raise money, awareness and send an important message that domestic violence exists in our community and is not to be tolerated! The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Georgian Triangle now in its 4th year was another successful outing raising over $23,000 in support of My Friend’s House. Walk on guys! Hospice Georgian Triangle rolled out the red carpet It felt very much like Oscar night at the Westin Trillium as Hospice Georgian Triangle held their 22nd annual Red Carpet Gala. Like a scene straight out of Hollywood, ‘Joan Rivers’ and a horde of paparazzi were on hand to greet the finely attired guests upon arrival. The Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH also captured many candid moments as guests stopped to grab a prop and pose for the camera to have their pictures printed right away as a souvenir. The evening was a soiree beyond compare and a smashing success, raising over $40,000 for the cause! The Past Makes a Great Present Unique, custom framed, exclusive holiday gifts are yours! The Georgian Frame Gallery is the perfect place to pick up one of our exclusive Georgian Frame Collection limited edition and open edition prints of historical images from the South Georgian Bay area. ‘Memories of Collingwood Harbour’ by Ray Davidson is a historically accurate image of the Collingwood Harbour in 1915. Featuring the Chicora steam vessel and several Watt’s Skiff in the foreground, with the old wharf and original terminal building this is the perfect gift for anyone with a love of our waterfront! The Craigleith Train Station holds many memories for anyone who remembers coming up on the ski train, or having dinner there when it was simply called ‘the Depot’. “Craigleith in Autumn’ by William Biddle depicts the station in the late autumn in the 1950’s as the train departs the station after bringing up tourists to see the fall colours of the area. Jozo Weider had a vision for the Blue Mountains that is today … more than 70 years after his arrival the developing into the village that he envisioned. However, in the beginning there was Jozo’s Ski Barn. The barn was the center of all activity; dining hall, cafeteria, lodging and home to Blue Mountain pottery in the basement. ‘In The Beginning – Jozo’s Ski Barn’ by local artist Nick Hodson is the perfect piece for the skiers in your family , especially if they can remember the great hot chocolate, pie and of course Jozo’s famous Chili! All images in the Georgian Frame Collection are available framed or unframed. All framing is done on site, we have exclusive designed frame packages available, or you can work with one of our designers and create your own unique frame package. This holiday season give a unique custom gift that depicts the area’s past. The Georgian Frame Gallery is your one stop custom Santa Shop! Georgian Frame Gallery “Ontario Barn” by Trisha Romance

Creemore Festival of The Arts

Business Profile: Lillex Boutique

The fourth annual Creemore Festival of the Arts featured sixty-seven local artists in 31 venues all within walking distance. Also featured was a unique pop-up exhibition from Toronto’s Ingram Gallery titled: “The View From Here” with six accomplished Canadian artists. The Artists on Location group show displayed one piece from each artist exhibiting around the village. Visitors and art patrons enjoyed various dining and shopping experiences throughout the friendly village of Creemore. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Leah Ruttan has always had a passion for being creative, whether it was painting, working with wood or creating decorations. She decided that if you can work at something you love doing every day, why not pursue it as a career? Leah has worked at a number of jobs in which the necessary skills were acquired to be successful. Lillex is an independent retail store from which Leah sells gifts and home accents to discerning buyers. The concept of the store is unique in that Leah creates most of the items herself. “I make things out of recycled material such as barn board, old window frames, antique furniture etc. I also make custom signs for your home, which makes for great personalized gifts for that hard to buy for person on your list.” explains Leah. Finding the location of 1232 Mosley Street in Wasaga Beach was the easy part. Leah Ruttan’s parents encouraged her to pursue her business plans by recommending that she rent a property that they own. Soon the empty space was leased and it became her dream store. Leah was able to enroll in a provincial program for young entrepreneurs called ‘Starter Company’. This program helps young entrepreneurs establish a business plan and pairs you with a business mentor and provides you with a government grant to help in the startup phase of business. Currently, in addition to Leah there is one other employee, Natalie Gatschene. Natalie started with Lillex in August and her help has become invaluable. During a typical day, Leah checks her emails, facebook, makes sure bookkeeping is updated, checks inventory, checks displays for sold items, checks the order book and works on any custom orders, as well as assisting customers to select a unique item. She says that best part of her time in the boutique is that she gets to redecorate/ rearrange the store almost every day! When asked to find one word that best describes her, Leah mentioned “resourceful”. Leah is proud that she is now pursuing her dream of owning her own business. As an example for her two children, Leah believes that if you put hard work and dedication into something then anything is possible. Every challenge brings her joy, especially when she brings a customer’s creative vision to life. Leah’s mentors are her parents. Her father was an independent flooring contractor for 20 years, before he decided to open his own business. And in all of Leah’s goals and dreams her mother has always encouraged her to do what makes her happy. Leah’s parents have always been very adaptable at facing adversity and the challenges of life with wisdom and humility. Leah said “This has shaped me into the woman and business owner I have become today. I would not have been able to follow through with my dreams without the encouragement and support of my parents.” What began as her own basement workshop creating artistic décor for her home and for friends, Leah Ruttan put her hobby to the test and opened Lillex Boutique. The business is named after her two children, Lily and Lenix. Drop by to find a unique gift for that special person.

Finding the Joy in a Stressed Out World Are you tired, feeling overwhelmed and ready for a break? One of the best remedies for the hectic pace is to add more joy. To find more joy, the first thing you need to do, is give yourself permission to allow more joy in to your life.

Don’t keep the joyful activities stuck at the bottom of your to-do list. Women, we are probably the worst. Often we look after everyone else and give our joy away. Adding a little bit of joy everyday will make your life feel more meaningful. Filling up our joy quotient helps to manage the stress. Simply put, when you are more filled with joy there is no space for all the stress. It is not selfish, when you are feeling joy, you share with everyone else around you, at home and at work. Make a long list of what gives you joy and include activities that may be long forgotten. It could be: cross-word puzzles, scrapbooking, puttering in your workshop, growing things, volunteering, reading mystery novels, oil painting, cooking, dancing, kick boxing, playing guitar or walking your dog. Everyday give yourself a date with your joy. As you begin, you may experience tugs from that insatiable to-do list. Changing anything can be challenging, if it seems impossible that is okay. Even spending five minutes per day on an activity that makes you feel alive is definitely worthwhile. Adding more joy to your life prompts you to live more in the moment and to feel more gratitude. This renewed peace sets the Law of Attraction into high gear to give you more of what you want. Make joy your new habit. Start today and live an inspired life. For a free consultation contact Jane Schnurr, Business Coach and Leadership Development Expert at 705-444-5338 or visit www.awesomecoaching.com Jane Schnurr coaches business leaders and individuals to pursue their dreams and live an awesome life. © Awesome Coaching Enterprises 2015

Roll out the barrel Collingwood had a barrel of fun at the inaugural Oktoberfest celebrations! The festivities kicked off Friday evening October 23rd with an eager crowd awaiting the arrival of the barrel on a horse drawn wagon for the ceremonial “tapping of the keg” in downtown Collingwood with Brew Master Michael Hancock from Sidelaunch Brewing. Then the Oktoberfest party on Saturday night at SideLaunch Brewery with fellow breweries Collingwood Brewery and Northwinds. John Gabriel and The Beer Barrel Band kept the crowd entertained. was there to capture the fun!

Big changes on the block The first block of downtown Collingwood is seeing a significant shuffle of businesses. OneLove is excited about the opening of their beautiful new storefront at 64 Hurontario St. “It was the perfect scenario”, says owner Carolina D’Andrea. “Loose Goose wanted to downsize and we were looking for more space, so we decided to move next door. It’s very convenient and we know our new customers will easily find us.” Loose Goose moved above the Collingwood Sweet Shoppe and in December the Blue Mountain Tea Company will be open at number 66. Minds Alive and Pamperme Day Spa have also moved to new locations - all within the first block! If you haven’t been downtown in awhile be sure to take a stroll along this dynamic part of the street and see what’s new in time for the holiday shopping season. 30 years young for the Prime Time Club The Prime Time Club of Wasaga Beach celebrated their 30th Anniversary on September 26th with a get together for lunch and cake. The Club is a non-profit social club for the over 50 generation with over 800 members, 105 of them honourary. Club President Cathy Neylan has managed to obtain government grants every year to update the interior of the club, the latest was the new flooring with a shuffleboard that looks great.
