What else could you call a celebration at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts that included some crazy celebrity artists competing in a “hilarious paint-off”, Elvis Tribute Artist Davey Kratz crooning some tunes, Danceroom Dancers struttin’ their stuff, live and silent auctions, door prizes and of course some nibblies and libations. I’d call that Funky Friday! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Collingwood developer believes Georgian students are important to his community Businessman Larry Law, who has owned and operated Cranberry Golf Resort and Living Water Resort and Residences since 1992, has always said one of his favourite things about his adopted hometown of Collingwood is that it’s a caring community. He too is showing he cares with a $100,000 donation to support students at the John Di Poce South Georgian Bay Campus of Georgian College. Law’s donation was made as part Georgian’s Power of Education fundraising campaign. Learn more at www.GeorgianCollege.ca/giving. Submitted by: Mark Hall

30 years of fundraising for the environment The Nature League celebrated their 30th anniversary with lunch and a cake at the AGM on Wednesday September 24th. The members enjoyed hearing speaker Ulli Rath, founder of Water Level Chapter, which is an affiliate of Stop the Drop, speak informatively on low water levels in Georgian Bay and Lake Huron.

New Patients Welcome!

Thirty years ago, in 1984, a group of ladies interested in fund raising decided to refocus their energies on “the Environment”. The Senior League Endowment Society of Collingwood Inc., which is now the Nature League, was born. They recognized the need to educate themselves on the flora and fauna of the Blue Mountain Watershed area, and incorporated cross country expeditions and educational walks which are still carried on today. Fund raising enabled the Senior League to purchase the Feversham Gorge, passing it over to the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority in 1967. They also paved the upper parking lot at Old Baldy, one of their favourite hiking spots. Another significant focus has been to preserve the Silver Creek Wetlands, and out of this struggle emerged the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust. Today, the Nature League continues as an active group, with walks, speakers, socials and fund-raising. In the last ten years, they have returned over $30,000 to like-minded groups in the Georgian Triangle. Proud of the Past. Focused on the Future. It’s moonlight madness I tell you! Hundreds of people hanging around the parking lot at Pine and Second on a Saturday evening and baying at the moon! Well okay perhaps they weren’t baying at the moon as that would be far too creepy and the makings of a bad horror flick, but they were there... I saw them for myself! Come to think of it it must have been the 2nd Annual Downtown Collingwood Moonlight Market... and it was great with food, fun, great deals and some musical entertainment... hey let’s do it again next year! Golfing ‘fore’ a great cause The annual Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Golf Classic was held at Mad River Golf Club in Creemore. 128 golfers attended and were able to raise $60,000 to go towards payment of the new I.V. pumps and poles. The title sponsor for this event was CC Tatham & Associates. Other major sponsors were Walker Aggregates, GreenShield, McKee Tire and Burgundy Asset Management. CGMH would also like to thank their community minded “Hole Sponsors” for their support. A unique dining experience in Heathcote Free Spirit Gardens presented Feast of Fields to raise money for school programs. An unforgettable, intimate, secluded, and delicious evening featured a locally grown 4-course dinner on the banks of the Beaver River, live music, a silent auction, great people, and a cash bar. Four unique food stations were set up where you were served each plate with a recommended wine pairing. One station was in a voyageur canoe where you quietly paddled up and down the river as you enjoyed that dish. Free Spirit Garden’s mission is to increase the capacity of our community to grow our own food, contributing to the creation of a sustainable food system. For more information: freespiritgardens.org. Keep your family safe from fire House fires occur more often than we think – and they are devastating disasters. During Fire Prevention Week (Oct 6-11), take the time to learn what you can do to prevent such a disaster and how you can get you family involved. Here are some valuable tips and procedures to plan together: • Prepare a fire escape plan for your family and practice it. Also make sure everyone in your household knows where your designated meeting place is outside.

ShanD’or

• Stop, drop and roll. Know the drill and practice it often.

carpentry

• Choose fire resistant materials when doing a home renovation. Products such as mineral wool insulation will prevent the spread of fire if it occurs. Industry experts recommend Roxul’s insulation called Safe N’ Sound, ComfortBatt, and ComfortBoard IS. • Check your residential fire extinguisher and make sure it is stored in an easy to access location in case of emergency. Conduct a training session to ensure each member of your family knows how to use it. The Fire Marshal’s Public Safety Council (firesafetycouncil.com), Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (cafc.ca), and Fire Prevention Canada (fiprecan.ca) are all excellent resources for safety tips. www.newscanada.com Georgian Life • October 2014

What does a Boomer have to do to stay healthy?

Up to 99% OFF First Month

In addition to the large generation getting older, the life expectancy rate of Canadians is higher than ever before. In 2012, there were 5, 825 Canadians over the age of 100 and the number is expected to increase steadily to an astonishing 78,300 in the next 50 years. There is a growing need for assistance from in-home care giving services. Approximately 60% of baby boomers have been diagnosed with at least one chronic medical condition. These conditions include arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.

The baby boomers are different from other retiring generations. They are the first generation to have access to antibiotics and tend to have a higher level of education than their previous generations. At the same time, researchers are finding that they are more obese and less physically active, and might make their health worsen with age.

‘Everyday Heroes’ support Parkinson Superwalk Superheroes are cool in the comics and movies but it’s the everyday heroes that really help to make a difference in our society and in the lives of people who live with physically and mentally challenging health conditions. One such hero is Jane Desnoyers who raised over $300 and with the help of approximately 40 other participants, great sponsors like Raglan Village, Bayhaven and Collingwood Nursing Home and volunteers from the Rotary Club raised over $3000 in this year’s Parkinson Superwalk. Kudos and thanks to all for your commitment, time and generous support. You too can be an Everyday Hero so sign up next year and help make a difference! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Speakers from each of Clearview’s nine Community Halls talked about their upcoming events in The Small Halls Festival Oct. 2-5. From Chickens to Batman and Robin, this was an awesome kick-off event. The SMILE Animal Society and Meaford Farmers’ Market hosted a combined fundraiser with the First Annual Feast of Fields banquet at the Meaford Harbour Pavilion. Local chefs donated their time and talent to offer a quality, full-course vegetarian meal, including mouth-watering soups, local breads and delicious desserts – all prepared with locally-grown produce at the fundraising banquet in support of SMILE and the Farmers’ Market. A number of Meaford-area musicians including Heather and Doug Brown performed throughout the evening. The Smile Animal Society is a group of professionals who share a common dedication to bettering the lives of animals and to create a large scale sanctuary for all domestic animals and an education centre. Proceeds from the event will go towards new equipment for the Meaford Farmers Market and the cost of sending one or more Smile representatives to educational workshops. www.smileanimalsociety.com www.meafordfarmersmarket.ca Photos/Story: Kimberley Merrifield

Craft and its many distinct forms and diverse materials, all have a common thread.... a special hand-made piece that brings function to caring hands; pleasure to others and a sense of accomplishment to those who have created them. Weaving - a fibre art in which two distinctive sets of threads are interlaced with each other at right angles to form a fabric or cloth... Cheryl Sheridan has been creating handwoven pieces for a little over three years. She and her husband, along with their three sons, live just outside of Collingwood on a lovely country estate, with an 1860s barn studio. Her addiction to weaving began with a floor loom on the side of the road with a “free” sign hanging precariously from the unloved piece. Now, Cheryl boasts a collection of four looms, all with an inspired purpose in mind. Recent works include handwoven mohair shawls, mohair couch throws, an endless array of scarves for both men and women, and blankets of 100% Canadian wool. BeWeavingIt! Close the cottage with important electrical safety tips Cottagers know that there are many things to remember when closing up for the winter. To ensure a smoother, safer start-up when re-opening the cottage next spring, Hydro One gives us a handy checklist for peace of mind: • Turn off all major appliances, your water heater, and electrical room heaters before you turn off the main switch. If you decide to leave your electricity on to operate a security system or lighting, you should: • Turn off the power supply to your major appliances at your main panel. • Turn off the power supply to any space heaters. Otherwise, they may turn on during cold weather. • Drain the plumbing system to prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting. • Drain your water tank. Remember to turn off the power supply to the water heater before draining the tank to avoid damage to the heating element. • Clean out your fridge and leave the door ajar to keep it smelling fresh. • Make sure your fireplace damper is shut tightly to prevent animals from getting in. www.newscanada.com

Butterscotch is a handsome ten year old cat that was found wandering Wasaga Beach in rough shape. Since arriving at GTHS he has received lots of attention to bring him back to good health, including much needed dental surgery. Butterscotch would make the perfect family cat and so desperately wants to find his forever home. If this senior cat could be your next best friend, please come and meet him at the Shelter today!

MISTY Beautiful Misty was left in a carrier at GTHS’ front door. While her story is a bit of a mystery, we know that she is roughly 5 years of age and is an affectionate lady. Misty loves nothing more than some quiet time with a human friend – especially one that will give her scratches and some grooming time. She would make a great addition to any family and we hope you’ll stop by to meet her!

In-Home Personal Care with Comfort Keepers

Dr Barbara Brown DC, CMRP has opened her new Collingwood office Balance North at 260 Hickory Street. She initially trained as a Doctor of Chiropractic, but has practiced Matrix Repatterning™ for 16 years at her Balance Health Centre location in Toronto West, along with osteopathic training in both Visceral Manipulation and Neural Manipulation.

At Comfort Keepers, we provide in-home personal care for people of all ages to maintain and improve their health and quality of life. Whether for an elderly loved one or recovering from surgery or illness, Comfort Keepers provides flexible, dependable care so that our clients can enjoy peace of mind knowing that exceptional personal service can be provided in their home and within their budget. Comfort Keeper’s care givers provide in-home PSW personal care, companionship, meal preparation and nutrition management, and light house-keeping.

Dr. Brown treats a wide range of structural issues, acute and chronic. Matrix Repatterning is a process of detecting and releasing significant tension patterns in the body. These patterns are created predominantly by forceful trauma to our body structure (ie. car accidents or big falls) or from scar tissue post surgery/injury. Through the network of connective support tissues, one area of strain can transmit strain to multiple sites. These stressed sites can then manifest wide ranging symptoms from pain to dysfunction. Simply put, the body is in a state of imbalance. Matrix Repatterning seeks to find and release the primary sources of strain, thus releasing the compensatory changes and allowing the body to normalize.

Our care givers are PSW certified and covered under WSIB. The staff at Comfort Keepers understands that everyone’s lifestyle is different, that is why we believe in customizing care to meet individual needs. We offer free in-home assessments with no-long term contracts or commitments. Providing in-home care can leave family members drained, both mentally and physically. So feel free to call on the team at Comfort Keepers for an assessment of care needs. We will create a customized support plan for your loved one’s independent living needs at home.

Barbara is thrilled to be a new member of the Collingwood community. She is an avid cyclist (mountain bike, downhill, road) and outdoor enthusiast. She can be reached at 416-762-4083 | 705-293-1435 or take a look at her website: www.balancehealthcentre.com

UnWind Kids

We believe in helping to build a community of positivity and inspiration. We want YOU to feel empowered and strong. We want you to believe that you can achieve anything. We can help you get there.

Simone Shears and Justine Sanderson are excited to introduce UnWind Kids (mobile wellness company).

Ever wanted to run away with the circus? You can do it...right here in Collingwood! Learn how to climb the aerial silks, spin in the aerial hoop, jump with the circus kids, relax with aerial yoga, shimmy and shake in belly dancing, and tighten your core in circus bootcamp! Our unique classes focus on your progressive development on the aerial apparatus of your choice while increasing your core strength and flexibility. Students participating in class will come from a wide variety of backgrounds from beginner to intermediate. Students new to the activity will learn the fundamentals of the aerial arts, while intermediate students will continue to increase their skills, tricks and techniques. 95 Sandford Fleming Drive, Collingwood 705-444-9675 www.aerialsilkscollingwood.com

Simone and Justine recognized the importance of teaching children/youth ways to de-stress and to provide them with a fun and effective way to let loose and leave their worries behind. Children are exposed to too many toxic influences in today’s society, bringing attention to the fact; they need time to “just be” and to be “playful”. UnWind Kids does just that! Help kids to unwind and relax through fun and creative ways. They engage kids through yoga-inspired movements, mindful breathing, music, games, art and mind holidays. Their classes and parties are theme-based (jungle, environment, spa, your choice) offering classes that are private, semi-private, group or special parties. Classes can travel to your venue of choice (schools, private homes, organizations, etc.). Positive Outcomes: + social interaction, + focus and attention, + creativity and imagination, + stress reduction, + sleep patterns, + emotional regulation, + physical health and lots of laughter. Your child is guaranteed to move, breathe, create, relax. Contact: Simone Shears/Justine Sanderson: info@unwindkids.com | 705-446-8666 www.unwindkids.com

1st Annual Habitat For Humanity Charity Golf Tournament High fives to our friends at Habitat for Humanity as their inaugural charity golf tournament on September 11 was a tremendous success! Approximately 90 golfers took to the course at Cranberry Golf Resort and while having to brave the elements on a rather cold drizzly day they enjoyed themselves nonetheless in support of this wonderful charitable organization. Their efforts on the course were rewarded with a great dinner and evening of socializing at Bear Estate. Congratulations to all who organized, volunteered and supported this year’s tournament and here’s to next year! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Hang Smart Even the most beautiful pieces of framed art can still look awkward if they are not hung logically. Some of the key considerations are: • Choosing framed art that fits the space where it will hang • Hang frames in reasonably close proximity to the furniture below it to create unison • Hang frames at eye level for maximum viewing pleasure, keeping in mind people stand in foyers and halls and sit in many other spaces so that height can vary Single Pieces Single pieces offer a lot of flexibility, but there are still general guidelines that will help your presentations. Typically the frame should not be longer than the furniture piece below it.. Pairs Pairs can be hung side by side or one over the other. Consider the wall space when making your decision. In rooms with long walls and low ceilings, hang them beside each other. In a two story room to fill some of the vertical space, hang one on top of the other. Matched Sets Matched sets of framed art are usually framed identically and hung in an organized fashion on the wall. These types of groupings often end up in a grid with perfect spacing. Random Collections Unlike matched sets of art, this might be something like a collection of landscape paintings, family photos, etc.

30

In this case, frame them to suit each piece of art and hang them in a less structured way. Whether you prefer symmetry or choose an asymmetrical arrangement, it pays to create a pleasing balance of colors, sizes, styles, and textures so one side doesn’t overpower the other. Leaning It has become highly fashionable to lean framed art. This can be done for functional or purely aesthetic reasons. If you are downsizing and have more framed art than wall space, you can lean one piece in front of another to consolidate your collection. Overlapping framed art adds dimension and interest, as well as bringing a new look to the art itself. Tip When hanging art you can get a good idea of how it will look by cutting out a piece of paper the same size as the outer edge of the frame and taping it to the wall. It is much easier to move the paper around than to change the positioning of the actual frame. On that same paper, you can make marks where you want to place your wall hooks. Then install the hooks over the paper and then tear the paper away.

Fall fair is always a family favourite The Great Northern Exhibition celebrated it’s 159th birthday! Kids of all ages, as they do faithfully each year returned to ride the midway, eat lots of carny food, enjoy agricultural exhibits and entertainment, tractor pulls and the demoltion derby. Of special note two wonderful young ladies Olivia Walker (Jr.) and Rebecca Redpath (Sr.) were crowned as this year’s Youth Ambassadors, and as part of the Road to the Royal the annual Chef’s Challenge saw Justin Miller of Cabin Bistro take home 1st prize. Justin will go on to represent the GNE in the semifinals at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto on November 8th. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
