Tracing the Family History Do you remember the story of when your grandparents first met? What it was like for them to serve in the war? What about their favorite memories from childhood? What was life like before television or the computer? Perhaps you are curious about your family history and where you came from, or you want to record the paths of your ancestors as a preservation gift to your own children and grandchildren. Whatever your interest and motivation for completing your family tree, you now have easy-access tools to help you such as internet sites, how-to books and community family research centres. In genealogy endeavors, one of the best resources is your elderly relatives. There are many rewarding benefits of creating an oral and recorded history with your elders. Talking more in depth about family history strengthens bonds between the older and younger generations. Reminiscing and memory sharing are important to the elderly as a way of remaining engaged in life and with family members. As they listen, the children and grandchildren receive an invaluable legacy that they can someday pass on to their own families.

If you want to help an older loved one share their family history and lineage, how do you begin? • Compile what you already know about the family. • Talk with your older relatives • Focus on a conversation • Record the oral history conversations with videos, voice recordings and photographs • Scan old photographs and historical documents. • Organize and chart • Benefit from local family search centres and family historical societies. Focus on the relationship with your ageing relatives, not on perfectly completing the final history chart. It is the people in your life that matter the most and together your life stories are a gift to the generations that will follow you. Enjoy the adventure! Your olive oil skin care products may not be as good for you as you think The overwhelming majority of beauty and skin care products on the market which try to promote olive oil as a cornerstone ingredient are invariably cutting corners and/or using inferior products. The cosmetic industry is a well known dumping ground for old, out of spec. and inferior grades of olive oil. In fact, it is the perfect place to dispose of unsold, aged olive oil, refined olive oil and/or adulterated olive oil – a place where there will be no scrutiny or questions about the trace-ability or authenticity of the olive oil being used. And if you think there’s a high level of dishonesty and a lack of transparency in the food industry regarding truth in labeling, the cosmetic and skincare industry’s record is absolutely abysmal by comparison. In light of this, we urge you to check the label and seek transparency! Here’s a brief checklist of criteria you might want to consider when looking for high quality olive oil skin care products that truly offer the benefit that high quality extra virgin olive oil delivers to both skin and body.

1. What grade of olive oil, (if any) is being used?

108 Sykes St. N., Meaford

519-538-0202 11:30am – 9:00pm 7 Days A Week!

2. If extra virgin olive oil is listed, where does it show up on the ingredient statement? - The more it contains, the better it is for your skin and hair. 3. What assurances do you have that the extra virgin olive oil used was fresh, of high quality, and not compromised? 4. Are there other oils in the product such as refined oils or filler oils such as coconut oil? 5. Does it contain preservatives or synthetics? 6. Are environmentally unfriendly products such as palm oil being used?

Plant & rake without the ache

Giving is easy...

With the cooler weather and autumn season upon us, we can count on having to focus on our year-end gardening and lawn maintenance activities. Weekends will include trimming down gardens, raking and putting away all of our patio furniture. The Ontario Chiropractic Association has produced a public education program called “Plant and Rake without the Ache”. It is aimed at helping gardeners to avoid the stiff and sore joints, muscle, neck and back pain that sometimes accompanies work in the yard. Here are some tips to keep your back healthy: Bend your knees to lift with ease: • Get close to the load: Before lifting something heavy, position yourself close to the object. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, head up, with your feet and body pointing in the same direction. • Knees bent, back straight: Check the weight of what you are lifting. Use your leg and arm muscles to smoothly and slowly lift the load. • Make sure you’re in sync: Keep the load close to your body. Pivot with your feet – don’t twist your body while carrying the load. • Easy does it: Bend your knees and slowly lower the load to its intended place. • Don’t forget: Do not lift heavy objects above your waist and avoid heavy lifting immediately after prolonged bending or kneeling. • Many hands make light work: Get some help with the heavy and awkward loads. Stand on something solid and slowly lift the load, keeping it close to your body, and pass the load to your helper.

My name is Pamela Quirk My mom worked in the RNA program at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital for 10 years so it was a part of my life from childhood. When my father was admitted to the hospital 4 years ago with a heart attack; it was a life and death situation for him. Collingwood General and Marine Hospital provided excellent care and he was given his life back. It was my catalyst to support an organization that meant so much to me. Giving was so easy – I consulted with an insurance specialist, took out a policy that cost me less than my annual typical donation. Over ten years, I will have this policy paid off and it hasn’t impacted my life at all. However, the financial implications to the Hospital are tremendous and will result in a significantly higher gift. Since my parents as well as brother and his family still live in Collingwood and I enjoy coming up here, I wanted to keep the support in this community. I am also very confident in the Foundation’s use of my money. They are excellent stewards and custodians of my support.

For more information regarding the “Plant and Rake without the Ache” education program please visit the Ontario Chiropractic Association website at https://www.chiropractic.on.ca/gardening-2 For further information regarding therapy, group exercise programs and individual personal training sessions that are effective in combating low back pain, please contact the Orthopaedic Sport Institute at (705) 467-0701 or info@ortho-sport.ca and ask for a consultation with one of our friendly healthcare professionals. Celebrate the harvest The Thornbury Farmers Market is held Sundays from 11a.m. to 2:00 p.m until October 12th between the Township Office and Pipers Sports Bar. A variety of vendors include local vegetables and fruits, meats, jewellery and specialty foods to give residents a spot to buy fresh and connect with the people that make the food locally. Please join me in supporting the great work at the Hospital – giving is easy – just call 705-444-8645 or email kerrj@cgmh.on.ca to get started. It affects us all, and your donation could make a difference in life or death.

Record setting donation from bike race On July 11, 2015, history was realized for My Friend’s House. The annual mountain bike race. 6 Hours of Gibraltar raised a record breaking $104,467.31 for the women in crisis centre in Collingwood. This marks the greatest donation on record thanks to the generosity and support of 920 donors. The event had 171 racers ranging in age from eight years to 72. A total of 608 laps and 3,830.4 kms were completed in the six hours. This unique race hosted on private trails, had all the elements of a professional event. “We run an operating deficit of $250,000 per year so this one event plays a big role in keeping our doors open for women in need in Collingwood, the Town of Blue Mountains, Stayner, Wasaga, and Meaford.” said Alison Fitzgerald, Executive Director of My Friend’s House. The 2016 race date has been set for July 9, 2016. Register a team, join in the fun, and support a great cause: www.6hrsofgibraltar.com. Submitted by: Julie Card

Big Brothers Big Sisters get a bigger home While the old upstairs office on Hurontario Street served them well for many years, it can’t compare to their wonderful new location in the spacious house at 74 Hume Street in Collingwood. In order to celebrate the move (and show off the great new digs) Executive Director Jarvis Strong, along with staff, was pleased to welcome the community and local municipal and business leaders to an open house on September 17th. The event would not have been complete without a ceremonial ribbon cutting and of course, cake. Congratulations Big Brothers Big Sisters of The Georgian Triangle on your new home and here’s to many great years ahead serving the ‘littles’ in our region as you do so well! Business Profile: Pure Organic Hair Studio

Academic and Career Preparation classes began September 9th at the Georgian College South Georgian Bay campus in Collingwood and the Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH was there for students (and staff) to have a bit of fun before they hit the books! This local campus offers a great variety of certificate and diploma programs. Balance your busy schedule and earn your diploma or certificate part-time close to home. It’s easy to learn - visit ontariocolleges.ca to start the process.

Rachael Bakker is a natural woman who believes in running a clean business. After ten years in traditional hair styling, Rachael saw a need for a chemical-free hair studio. She opened her own shop and called it Pure Organic Hair Studio, which has been open since May 15th of this year. Personal health challenges prompted Rachael to create this unique business offering in the Georgian Triangle area, having previously experienced Colitis. She looked to the current medical system for answers, but medical doctors were unable to address her problem. Going the Naturopath route, they found that Rachael had a gluten allergy. After changing her diet, she was completely healed. Rachael Bakker now wants to help men and women to discover that there are natural and organic alternatives to hair and skin care. Pure Organic Hair Studio services include: women’s hairstyling, artistic design cuts, single double process colouring, colour with highlights, root smudging with highlights, balayage and natural foiling highlights. For men, she’s barbering with traditional tapers, cuts, modern fades, pompadour and undercuts with hard parts, and is planning to acquire her Barbering License in order to use straight razors on clients’ hair. She is currently researching an organic make up line to bring into the studio as well. Many people today are going green and organic for their personal health and the healing of our planet. All of the products are Certified Organic, skin care products made with Plant Stem Cells, anti-aging science, holistic products for hair care, skin care, lip care, perfume and bug spray. Most of these products are imported for Denmark. Rachael is currently a sole proprietor and hairstylist, but as the business grows, she plans to hire another stylist and an esthetician. One of the recent opportunities that Rachael took part in was doing all the hair design for models in a fashion show organized by Elaine Dickinson. Practising a spiritual lifestyle has given Rachael the perseverance and determination to succeed in her endeavours to bring a healthy alternative to hair design for men and women. Pure Organic Hair Studio is located behind Elaine Dickinson’s and beside Curves in the Women’s Fashion and Fitness Marketplace where there is lots of free parking. It was time to put on your best Western duds, grab your pretty little filly, hitch ‘em up and head into Thornbury on Friday August 28th for the Country Hoedown Street Party. As always, Thornbury did it up in a big way and this great street party had it all. The place was packed with families who had the chance to enjoy live music with The Little White Lies, dancing in the street, some fun pics at the Georgian Life Photo Booth, face painting, airbrush tattoos, balloon twisting, a petting zoo, street food and more! Wow... wasn’t that a party? Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Helping Chloe’s dream come true Who doesn’t like to dream? 4 year old Chloe Fraser like most children her age has lots of dreams, however her very special dream is to have a “Walking Party”. Physically restricted to a wheel chair as the result of a spinal injury at birth, this charming, outgoing young girl requires extraordinary and very costly stem cell therapy to hopefully help her walk and live her dream. To help raise the necessary funds organisers with the help of the community and host Boston Pizza Collingwood held a tremendously successful event on September 23rd raising $11,875. In the words of her family, “So many people to thank for an amazing night at Boston Pizza in Collingwood! Melanie, Melissa, Christine, Sandy, Alex, Georgian Life for the awesome Photo Booth and Photographer Dave West, all of the local businesses that donated auction items, the community that came out to show their support, all of the staff at Boston pizza that worked hard to make everyone happy, Julie LeBlanc for hosting the evening, the Peak FM for advertising the event, everyone that shared the event and sold tickets, Shannon Steadman for donating her winnings back into the 50/50 fund! Everything was truly amazing. Thank you so much. Big hugs from all of us especially Chloe who was so excited to see everyone!!” Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

What’s your spaghetti?

Fall into colour...

I must confess to being more of a cannelloni guy, but after seeing all the fun that the kids and their families had with Leah Dilley RMT of Calm Kidz at her recent What’s Your Spaghetti book launch party at Sunset Beach, I might just become a convert to this long skinny pasta! Wow! While the weather didn’t totally cooperate it certainly didn’t put a damper on the spirits of guests who had a chance to Groove Dance with Tyler Boyle, get in a little face painting and then chow down on what else of course but a spaghetti lunch served up by Boston Pizza Collingwood. A super fun free event! Congratulations to author Leah Dilley and illustrator Jonny Kearns on the new publication and best wishes for great book sales! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

PT me! Princess I don’t know why but my owners forgot me & left me behind when they moved out. The kind folks here at the GTHS had me professionally groomed and set me up to be a “nanny cat” in the quiet kitten room to make me comfortable. I like people but have a bit of a scared feeling around noisy rough companions. Deep in my heart I know I could be a loving pet to anyone quiet & peaceful who would just give me a little chance to warm up & get to know them. Please come visit soon & ask for me... I’ll be waiting for you. Sincerely, Princess!

Pepper

Are you looking to spice up your life? Well hello there, my name is Pepper! I am a BIG, gorgeous, 2 year old, Cane Corso X with a giant heart filled to the seams with gold smile emoticon. I found my way to The Georgian Triangle Humane Society after being rescued by the amazing people of Animal Rescue Foundation. I am quite the majestic sight to see weighing in at a massive 115 lbs! WOWZA! I am a very sweet girl that loves to be around people and craves affection. I enjoy walks, playing with toys and romping around in the yard. I would do well in a home without children or any other animals as I am a big girl who craves lots of love and needs lots of attention.

Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. If you think that we might be the perfect forever friends, please call 705-445-5204 ext 229 or send an email to dogadoptions@gths.ca and set up a time for us to meet and get to know one another.

Yoga on hot rocks. It’s a thing at iwa. It was a red carpet affair at iwa Spa’s Grand Opening in Blue Mountain Village on September 17th. Guests were invited to tour the facilities, speak with owners Cam and Michelle Ubell, the rest of the iwa team, and their product reps. The DJ was spinning great tunes while people mingled inside and out sampling delicious food and beverages as the sun set behind the mountain. 35 years... legends and their dreams never die It’s hard to believe that 35 years have passed since the first Terry Fox Run. Time marches on and so do the dedicated participants who show up year after year to run, ride and walk in support of this true Canadian hero and his dream to raise money for cancer research. Supporters at this year’s Collingwood event raised in excess of $10k. Congratulations and a huge thank you to all who came out and for helping to keep the dream alive. The road is almost open! Residents of Collingwood will soon benefit from the reconstruction of Hume Street. Businesses are affected by road construction and the consumer is influenced on where to shop due to this road construction. Please take some time to visit one of the businesses along Hume St. Don’t let the noise and dust drive you away! Road construction can be challenging at times, but we hope the end result will be very rewarding for the businesses. Smart painting tips from the experts Painting a room can make a huge difference in its appearance, even if the furniture, décor, and lighting stay the same. However, it takes a lot more work to properly paint a room than many people think. There is an art to sequencing color from one room to another - hallways are the arteries of the house, rooms radiate off the hallways and this palette helps the transition because the colors flow seamlessly. For the best paint job, you’ll need to follow these 7 steps: 1. Clean the walls - remove all dust, dirt, and fingerprints with water, mild dishwashing detergent, and a sponge. Then rinse the walls with clean water to remove soap residue. 2. Tape around the edges of the walls with painters’ tape - make sure to cover all trim, window frames, doorframes, and baseboards that you don’t want to get paint on. 3. Apply primer to the walls - primer will help the final paint job look shinier and have a more even appearance. It will also lessen the number of paint coats needed to fully cover the former colour. 4. Use a paintbrush around the edges - a roller is too big to use in tight spots around the corners and edges (where you applied the painters’ tape), so use a 2-inch angled paintbrush in those harder-to-reach areas to create a buffer of 2 to 3 inches. 5. Paint in the shape of a “W”- start in the corner of the wall and roll up and down in a 1 m x 1 m W pattern; then, fill in the area without removing the roller from the wall. Repeat in the next 1 m x 1 m section until the wall is finished. 6. Paint the trim - paint the mouldings, door, baseboards, and window frames with a 2-inch angled paintbrush. 7. Remove the painters’ tape - make sure to do this before the paint dries, so you don’t peel off any of the new paint in the process. At Wasaga Beach Decorating we can help you choose the perfect colours of paint for your new home. 3-1 Market Lane, Wasaga Beach 705-429-1500 www.wasagabeachdecorating.com

David Margesson on Wine - Time for South American Wine Winemaking in South America is primarily concentrated in Argentina and Chile. Part I - Argentina At more than a million square miles Argentina is the second largest country in South America after Brazil. It is the 6th largest wine producer in the world producing 1,177,800 tonnes, yet it is only within the last few years that it has started to export its wines as the local market consumed it all. Political instability, economic depression, soaring inflation plus a number of power-hungry military rulers drove the country down. It was not until the 1990s that the country became stable both politically and economically, at which time the wineries badly needed capital and new markets. They copied the success and blueprint of Chile and slowly and steadily, with the help of offshore investors from France and the U.S., began to modernize their wine industry. By the mid-1990s Argentina exported 400,000 gallons of wine to the U.S. and by 1998 that figure rose to four million gallons. Chile’s exports to the U.S. in 1998 were 13 million gallons. In 1999 the Iscay wine (a blend of Malbec and merlot) became a firm favourite at $50 per bottle. Winemaking in Argentina was started in the late 16th century by the soldiers and missionaries who brought the vines from Spain, with some coming later from Chile. The early vines were planted by the Atlantic coast but they realized locating inland to the dry foothills of the Andes was the ideal location. The climate there was perfect for growing grapes, and water from the Andes was utilized for irrigation. Today there are 3,000 wineries in Argentina ranging from small private boutique wineries to Penaflor, which is amongst the largest wineries in the world.

24

Their wine laws are fairly loose, but if a grape varietal is listed on the label, then 80 per cent of the wine must be from that grape. There are seven distinct wine regions and their main white varietals are chardonnay, chenin blanc, criolla, cereza and muscatel. Their main reds are barbera, tempranilla, cabernet sauvignon, Malbec and merlot. Mendoza is their most significant wine region with most of the better wineries located there. Mendoza is located just below the Andes and about 1,000 kilometres due west from Buenos Aires. About three-quarters of all Argentinian wine is produced there and the total number of vines exceeds that of both Australia and New Zealand combined. The Malbec grape is their most significant varietal and produces better wine in Argentina than in Bordeaux, its ancestral home. Watch for the next article in the December issue on Wines from Chile.

David and Nina Margesson are the founders of Winetasters of Collingwood, a wine club dedicated to the knowledge and understanding of wines through tasting and education. The emphasis is on fun, knowledge and being social. They cater to both the novice and experienced wine aficionados. Crawling around downtown for the love of art and good times Following up on a couple of hugely successful outings, the Collingwood Art Crawl was back with an even bigger, better and more impressive 2015 edition. This free, self-guided art tour featured over 100 artists at more than 20 venues with live music, samplings of food and beverage, and incredible art all in downtown Collingwood. This year’s event was simply amazing and it was wonderful to see the downtown alive and buzzing with huge crowds on a beautiful Saturday evening. Putting for Gloey … not Glory! “100 Teams. 18 Holes. 1 Cause. = Putting for Hospice”. Duffers galore came out for a day of fun and hijinks on the mini links at the Superstition course at Georgian Manor Resort (now Georgian Bay Hotel) in support of Hospice Georgian Triangle’s 4th Annual Gloey Golf Putting Tournament. Named in honour and loving memory of Gloria “Gloey” Emo this annual event has proven to be a big hit with the community and more importantly a wonderful fundraiser for Hospice. The Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH was happy to provide some laughs and memories at the evening social. Congratulations and thanks to all those who came out in support of this wonderful local charitable organization. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
