August is the time for cruisin’ in your ‘vette! The Wasaga Beach Corvette Club held the 24th Annual Corvette show on a very rainy day, but that didn’t stop over 125 enthusiasts and owners from attending. The Wasaga Beach Rotary Club drew the lucky ticket for the annual Corvette prize. The winning ticket belonged to a local Wasaga Beach resident, Lee Sawchuck. $65,500 was raised during this year’s Corvette Lottery, which will be distributed to local charities throughout the year. And if you aren’t as lucky as Lee, you can always buy a corvette: Three Collingwood Buddies (Hans Schinker, Gord Dennis and Lee Mondrow - bottom picture) were spotted crusing around Collingwood harbour with their toys they bought from Mike Jackson Motors. Just What The Ordered!

Season
What do people really want in retirement? After working with many people for the past twenty three years I can sum up in five points what most people are looking for when setting up their plan for retirement. For those of us who reach the age to seriously consider retirement and they have a significant other person in their lives, they tell me the number one priority is to 1. ”take care of each other first.”
Every Wednesday in September & October Sunday November 30th, 2014 Sunday September 7th, 2014
February 14, 15 & 16th, 2015
Saturday October 11th, 2014
Their second priority is 2. “They want the assurance that they are not going to run out of money.” For most people this is of great concern and as a result often make life choices based solely on the interest rate they are getting on their investments. This approach to retirement can have a crippling effect on the soundness of their planning. We offer many solutions to help our clients have more income and pay less tax in the process. The benefit? They can remain independent longer, truly enjoying life with more and doing more. 3. “Maintain their independence and dignity in retirement.” They do not want to rely on anyone, especially their children for anything. They never want to be seen as a burden at any time. So often the kids tell us “well you don’t have to worry mom and dad you can just move in with us…” most parents don’t see this as a valid option. Proper planning allows them to have the care when they need it most…usually their last five years of their lives, in other words 60 months… 4. “Choice of giving money to their Children or Revenue Canada” they want their children to inherit their money left over. Interestingly the children want that too!
www.wasagabeach.com facebook.com/WasagaEvents 705.429.3844 ext. 228
5. “Leave a legacy to be remembered after death” In our experience most people who have money when given the opportunity to leave money to a charity effectively would do so. They especially like the concept of leaving money to registered charities and take a dollar for dollar tax deduction on their final tax return. There is a lot of planning that can done here. Simply, having a proper plan taking these five things into consideration will assist you in your next transition and a more successful retirement. Brian A. McMillan CFP, CLU, CH.F.C, is Principle and Life Transition Advisor of Team Approach Planning in Collingwood. He can be reached at Brian@TAPadvantage.ca 705-446-9986 ext 101

What’s in Your Pencil Case? When people look at a simple pencil case what do they see? A small bag designed to hold pens and pencils, made of plastic or canvas with a metal zipper. An insignificant but necessary part of the many items a student uses when going back to school. But what if this pencil case was not made of plastic or canvas, and instead it was handmade by artisans in a far away land? What if these artisans were not nameless, faceless people in a factory, but were hard working women striving to improve their lives? And what if the material used to make this pencil case was woven by hand, a process that takes several hours and uses practices and traditions that have been handed down through generations? Handmade pencil cases like this do exist and are commonly referred to as ‘Fair Trade’. This means that the people making them are paid fairly for their work which in turn helps them live a better life and emerge out of conditions of poverty. Hearts and Crafts in Collingwood sells fair trade pencil cases from Nepal. They are handmade by artisans from the Nepalese Women Skill Development Project which trains poor and illiterate women to weave, cut and sew textiles so that they may be self-reliant. These women are marginalized in their communities due to their social or economic status, many of them are widowed, divorced, abused or disabled and come from remote rural areas with rampant poverty. The skills they learn through this important program allow them to become empowered and independent. The pencil cases come to Canada through a Canadian fair trade company called Didi Bahini, which means “sisters” in Nepalese. Through the hard work and dedication of the founder Jane Gragtmans, beautiful handcrafts find their way across the world and into your school bag! So the next time you look at a pencil case, what will you Hearts and see? An empty plastic object, or one that was handmade Crafts with love; filled with the hopes and dreams of the woman who made it, and the entrepreneur that brought it to you! Great Gifts for Mom! I am a 2 yr old Rotti/Husky mix that came to GTHS as a stray. I am an energetic girl! I love going for walks with the volunteers here but they say I don’t have any manners. I am currently working on my heal, sit, stay and give commands. I am a smart girl, so with consistency and repetition I am catching on quickly! My ideal home will be a calm home with dog experience. I prefer to be the only animal in the home. If you are looking for a sweet, adorable, energetic pooch like myself please call: Lynne or Sue at (705) 445-5204 ext 226 so you can come meet me.
Gathering of the Classics On Saturday August 9th the Edenvale Aerodrome hosted a spectacular day of aviation and old autos. A gorgeous day to learn about rare vintage WWII era airplanes and motoring beauties. Classic airplanes, cars and motorcycle aficionados flocked to the annual gathering. Flights were available all day long in the WWII Cornell and open cockpit bi-plane Tiger Moth, the rare Bellanca Cruisemaster, Piel Diamant, or great Canadian trainer Fleet Canuck aircrafts. Bistro 26, the restaurant on-site, served up delicious meals and cold drinks. Stop by on a Thursday to Edenvale Aerodrome and visit the Edenvale Classic Aircraft Foundation’s hangar (Hangar F) located directly behind the restaurant. The ECAF members are always welcoming visitors and enjoy the chance to show you around and talk airplanes! Photos: Enrique Miranda
Butterscotch Butterscotch is a GTHS Guardian Angels cat that is now in our Main Cat Room ready for adoption! He is an easy going gentleman that gets along well with other cats and would likely be good with a calm dog. Butterscotch deserves a second chance at a forever home, please spread the word about this handsome fellow. Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. To inquire about their availability, or to inquire about other animals available for adoption please contact the Georgian Triangle Humane Society at 705-445-5204 or view their website at www.gths.ca.

50th Anniversary of Wasaga Beach Lions Bingo On Aug 14th, 1963, the Wasaga Beach Lions Club launched bingo in town with a “Monster Bingo”. This gave the club their first funds to help the community (not a town until 11 years later). The first donation was $300 to the Blue Mountain Camp for Crippled Children. That year they supplied a Christmas turkey and hamper to every needy family in the area. Being the fact that one of the major missions in Lions is to improve sight, corrective glasses were provided for several children. In 1966, they purchased the first ambulance in town for the cost of $2,863.40! In 1967, they started the Small Fry club for pre-school children and this continuted until the province started kindergarten. They made their first of many contributions to the Wasaga Beach Library by providing childrens books. In 1970, the first donation was made to General and Marine Hospital. To date, they have donated over $150,000. 1971 was the building of the town’s first medical centre, which is used as a youth centre today. 1976 was the year which the Lions Club purchased the Wasaga Stars Arena for citizens of the town. In 1993, over $70,000 was put towards the Wasaga Beach Library. Over 50 years, the club with the support of all the bingo players, has been able to support youth through hockey, figure skating, baseball, soccer, the youth centre and a robotics team. They support people in need with donations to the food bank (loonie draw), Hospice Simcoe, Hospice Georgian Triangle, habitat for humanity and kinettes toy drive. Local branches of national organizations need assistance so they too can support our local residents. This includes CNIB, MS society, Alzheimers Society, Cancer society and several others... the list goes on and on.
Come and enjoy our delicious menu while watching the airplanes. Find a relaxing seat on our spacious patio or come inside for a quieter and cozy atmosphere of our dining room and lounge. COME SHARE OUR PASSION FOR FINE FOOD

On Aug 15th, Wasaga Beach Lions celebrated 50 years of bingo with 187 players. What an amazing night. All the players were treated to a cupcake, donated by Taste of Paradise of Wasaga Beach. They discovered that there were 6 ladies present who have supported the bingo for over 40 years. Elizabeth Owen, age 81 and Dorothy McMillan age 80, have enjoyed the bingo for 40 years, and Mary Kopacz age 82 for 44 years. They just couldn’t believe that 3 of the ladies have been playing bingo for the entire 50 years. Marie Babe, age 85, Norma Oldfield, age 93 and Terry McIntosh age 96! The ladies said that bingo is one of the things that keep them alert with an active mind and gives them an opportunity to socialize with friends. Norma Oldfield, shared a journal she kept of her bingo winnings over the 50 years, she had won $23,815! This was an amazing record to see. Everyone who has played Lions bingo is part of the club’s history. Over 50 years, there has been almost $2,000,000 put back into the community. So, for those nights that you didn’t win, many others did. A special recognition also goes out to one of the Lions– Wayne Henderson. He has been at almost every bingo for the last 30 years. When players line up to buy their cards from Wayne, he often he knows what they’ll purchase before they even say anything! Thank you Wayne for ALL these Friday nights! Younger people in their 20’s and 30’s have also discovered that bingo is great entertainment in Wasaga Beach on a Friday night. So get a group of friends and co-workers together and be part of the next 50 years of history. Thank you on behalf of everyone and every organization that the Wasaga Beach Lions Club bingo has supported. Playing bingo is a Win-Win. Submitted by: Janice Campbell Georgian Life • September 2014

The Time of Your Life
FALL ARRIVES IN AUGUST
e have all heard the expression that time is money. Unfortunately unlike money we cannot invest our time and miraculously end up with more hours in the day. However we do have control over how we spend our time. Too many of us are feeling bored and burdened by overwhelming “busyness” at work and home, wondering when it will be our time. As fall begins and the “busyness” of the season unfolds, you may want to do things differently. If you want to change your life, change how you spend your time. It may sound simple but it is not easy. Here are 5 tips to help you make better use of your time: 1. Say “No” – the world won`t end, saying it gets easier with practice. 2. Take time for you – add some quiet time and time for fun 3. Track your time – Log where your time actually goes not where you think it goes. The truth may surprise you. 4. Be realistic – scale back your expectations and give yourself some breathing room. 5. Set priorities – decide the top priorities for the week and stick with them. To change things, start with one of the tips above and do it consistently for a week or two and then add the next step. You can also apply this list to your work place and when you do watch your profits soar. Using your time wisely ramps up efficiency and you will be amazed how much more you can accomplish.

It’s a bird... it’s an FPV RC plane... For the first time in our region more than 100 FPV (First-Person View) hobbyists from all over the world came to Collingwood this weekend to display, talk about, fly and race everything ‘drone’, a common term for the many different types of flying machines on display at the 2014 North American FPV Meet. The weather cooperated and the weekend was thoroughly entertaining, enjoyed by participants and a good crowd of curious guests eager to learn more about this very intriguing hobby. Thanks to all for coming to Collingwood and sharing your passion with us. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

The Iron Skillet As a classically trained chef, Tony has been cooking up his special dishes over 20 years. After serving it up in Toronto at the Four Seasons he travelled Europe, working in many small kitchens in different countries getting a feel for different ethnic dishes. After travelling extensively he returned back home to Collingwood to start his own restaurant. Tony has created menu items to take in different flavours such as the Skillet Pulled Pork Tamale, Fisherman Stew, Stuffed Yorkshire Pudding, and he is offering his signature dishes like Schnitzels, Enchiladas, Jambalaya, and of course his Skillet dishes like Mussels and Trout. These are just a few of his ‘taste’ assured specialties. Many customers come into the Iron Skillet for the Feature Board, it changes daily and you never know what will be on it. Because everything is made to order, people with special dietary needs can discuss food options with their server before ordering. Tony’s attitude to food is ‘Go Big or go Home’ and this still holds true at the Iron Skillet.
