“Generosity from organizations like the Wasaga Beach Volunteer Firefighters Association goes very far here at the YMCA,” said Val Dickson, General Manager, Wasaga Beach YMCA. “Because of this donation, we are able to continue to offer essential, lifesaving programs to the children and youth within our community.”

The Wasaga Beach YMCA currently offers the Swim to Survive program to students in grade two and three. It teaches the essentials needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water – an important first step to being safe around water. With the help of the donation from the Volunteer Firefighters, the Wasaga Beach YMCA will be offering a class to local students in grades four and five that will teach essential swimming and lifesaving skills in and around the water. “Each year, the Fire Department deals with at least one water related accident that could have been avoided,” said Jason Martin, Wasaga Beach Volunteer Firefighters Association. “This program is going to be specifically tailored for the Wasaga Beach community and possibly rolled out into other communities across Simcoe/Muskoka, if the financial assistance is available. Knowing the important role the Y plays in providing these essential services, our association was pleased to donate to the Wasaga Beach YMCA.” Submitted by: Louise Picot

When it comes to inspiration - no stone is left unturned! British based Farrow & Ball has set themselves aside from other paint companies by creating a product of quality, using only the finest ingredients and rich pigments. All Farrow & Ball paints and wallpapers are made using meticulous, traditional methods. The water based, low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints are ecofriendly, and with their low odour are great for your home environment and family lifestyle. Unlike most wallpapers which are usually printed with ink, these papers are made using traditional block and trough printing methods as well as richly pigmented paint, giving each design a sumptuous and tactile texture, unique to Farrow & Ball. With florals, damasks, stripes and geometric patterns, each design is inspired by archives of timeless and evocative wallpapers, fabrics, and patterns from around the world.

Dr. Shouldice treats patients with acute and/or chronic health concerns, including: skin conditions, autoimmune conditions, digestive problems, infections including parasites and heavy metal and chemical toxicities.

Diet and lifestyle can also have a profound affect on the painful symptoms associated with RA. Diets containing inflammatory foods can aggravate RA. Because everyone is unique, food intolerances need to be tested for each individual. This way we can determine which foods you are eating that are causing the inflammation in your body. Elimination of these inflammatory foods can vastly improve autoimmune arthritic conditions by calming down the immune system. Other ways to decrease inflammation through diet are to eat unprocessed high quality foods and limit sugar intake. Eating fermented foods and supplementing with micro flora such as acidophilus can help to decrease pathogenic microbes that can play havoc with one’s immune system. One supplement that helps to heal RA is vitamin D, which is especially valuable to those who feel their symptoms worsen in the winter months. High amounts of omega 3 oils, which are hard to get without supplementation, are also very helpful in decreasing Rheumatic pain. All in all by making some simple lifestyle changes, Rheumatoid Arthritis can be treated naturally with success. If you would like to have a home filled with personality and one-of-a-kind treasures, custom framing can easily help you achieve it. Many people just have things like art, photos and diplomas framed, but nearly anything can be framed in some fashion. Your local custom framer can create special frame designs to address your unique style and space, to provide the best framing solutions for each item you bring to them. Most of us hang onto objects that came from special moments in our lives. They may be family heirlooms passed down from parents, something relating to the sports or hobbies we love, or souvenirs brought back from a wonderful trip. If your home lacks storage and art, consider framing something interesting that you don’t have a place for. Who says frames have to hang on a wall? They can just as easily be used to make trays. You can frame a print, photos, or something like a collection of coins or mine corks. Or have a mirror framed to set under candles and a floral arrangement on a dinner table. It’s a great look

Bulletin boards do not have to be boring. You can cover the cork board with a favorite fabric and choose frames to coordinate with your taste and lifestyle. This board is intended for a teenage girls’ bedroom, but with a change of frame and background, bulletin boards can also fit a professional’s office space, or find a home in your kitchen One of the easiest ways to create a unique decor that expresses your personality is with one-of-a-kind custom framing. Nearly anything can be framed and it can be designed to express your individual style. Georgian Frame Gallery

Clever Conversations Think about this: people do not listen with the intent to understand, they listen with the intent to reply. With that in mind, a clever conversation could be different from a regular conversation in that it might encourage the participants to use different filters and actually engage in the conversation at a more meaningful level. They might want to understand the context of the shared thoughts and the relevance of the expressed thoughts to the lives of people or changes to the environment that is being referred to in the clever conversation. Clever conversations move the people from a hearing mode to a listening mode. When you really get involved in the act of listening, you show respect for the speaker and respect for the subject matter. Listening better will get you more involved with people, events and situations.

certain spaces or increasing the taxes on the purchase of cigarettes. We hear those things. But we haven’t listened to things like ‘why people smoke’ in the first place. If we truly listened and understood, maybe we would be in a better place to reduce the number of smokers and actually make a difference. The idea of clever conversations is to encourage people to listen more effectively and to actually think a little deeper and share a point of view that demands more attention. There is a time for regular conversations and there is a time for clever conversations. It’s only when you have had a chance to participate in both types of conversations that you will know the difference and be able to really enjoy a clever conversation. - Rock Palmer, RockResources.ca on behalf of The Clever Office, on why Clever Conversations (every Wednesday morning from 8:30 - 9:30am) are important for change.

MAKING ROOM FOR THE

The Town of Stayner has been home to a weekly Music in The Park every Thursday evening during the summer. Last year a farmers market and a classic car show were added, both have met with tremendous success. This year they wanted to add something more, so the The Stayner Kinsmen stepped up and added a beer and wine garden. Even though it’s only for a few hours every Thursday evening, it has been extremely successful garnering comments such as “it’s about time someone did this – Thanks”. The club is proud to partner with Clearview Township to offer this service to the community. The event ran through to the end of August. Submitted by: Bill Roskar

On behalf of the 150 families that we have served since opening the doors of Campbell House, Hospice Georgian Triangle Staff and Boards of Directors would like to thank the Collingwood Professional Fire Fighters Association (CPFFA), the Collingwood Volunteer Fire Brigade, The Collingwood Fire Department, The Huron Club and the Blue Mountain Golf and Country Club (BMGCC) Ladies Members’ Guest Day organizers for their recent generous donations. The CPFFA helped out with ticket sales at the Ladies Members’ Guest Day, and for their volunteer efforts were given the choice of charity to which the proceeds of the day would be donated – and they chose HGT. Along with the Firefighters’ own donation of $8,500 from the Elvis 50/50 draw proceeds, the BMGCC Ladies added another $540! To top off this wonderful news, Ian and Joanne Duff of The Huron Club continue to be incredible supporters. They too donated proceeds of Elvis Festival activities held at The Huron Club, as well as the monies raised from their annual Golf Tournament. Each and every donation to HGT is very much appreciated. Protection in a time of Critical Illness If you’re like most people, you probably know of someone who has been diagnosed or suffered from a serious illness. Because of this life-altering illness, that person and their family also likely suffered from the financial impact of their condition. You may have asked yourself many times, “If I were diagnosed with a serious illness, who would take care of me and my family? Who would pay the bills?” Thanks to improvements in healthy living and medical science, there is a good chance you would recover from a serious illness and get on with your life. Critical Illness Insurance is a product that provides you with the funds needed to ease the burden of a life-altering illness, so you can focus on getting better without the disruption to your lifestyle or income. Here’s how it works. Upon survival of a designated waiting period after the diagnosis of one of several specific critical conditions, such as life-threatening cancer, heart attack or stroke, you will be provided with a lump sum payment, which varies depending on the coverage you choose. The benefit of this coverage is yours to use the way you want. That means you’ll have the freedom to: • complement your health-care alternatives • hire a nurse or caregiver • pay off your mortgage • complete illness-related home renovations • pay for childcare and housekeeping • send your children to college or university • provide ready cash for expensive drugs and treatments in the United States and abroad If you have any questions or want the full details about this type of coverage, please call your Co-operators financial advisor John Redick. 47 Saint Marie St., Collingwood Phone: 705-445-0301 Email: John_Redick@cooperators.ca Submitted by: Martha Redick

A fun foamy adventure The 5K Foam Fest was not a hardcore race it was a FUNCORE race full of mud, foam, and obstacles! There was a race clock so participants could take note on how fast they ran but were encouraged to focus on the fun aspect of the race rather than the speed. They could “walk it, charge it, run it, and fun it”! Hundreds of participants had a great time. Story/Photos: Enrique Miranda

Sidelaunch Days makes a big splash! Collingwood harbour came to life over the Civic Holiday Weekend as the first annual Side Launch Days Festival took to the water in a celebration of our ship building history. It was a fantastic opportunity to board one of the many local tour boats and enjoy the scenic beauty of our harbour and Southern Georgian Bay. The weekend had just about something for everyone including SUP (Stand Up Paddling) races, a sailing regatta, water sports demonstrations, a kite fest, historical walking tours and displays, AT SEA (an art projection on the grain elevator), strolling entertainment and vendors along the Promenade and Heritage Drive. Fall is the time to prepare your roof for winter Once the kids are back to school, consider what has to be done to prepare your roof system for the cold weather. A roof inspection every fall can help address issues that could pose problems once the snow flies. The weather is perfect at the beginning of fall to have an expert get up and walk across your roof looking for issues. Here’s what the inspector will look at: THE GUTTERS: When leaves and debris collect in your gutter system, eventually it will create a clog in the downspouts. Rain water will overflow the gutters, damaging your roof, trim and siding. The added weight of the wet leaves and water could also cause your gutters to pull loose from the anchor point or collapse. PROPER INSULATION: The insulation in your home is there to offer a barrier between the heated and/or cooled areas of your home and the outside temperatures. Without proper insulation you can run into a number of issues including a loss of heat in the winter, condensation issues, and even water damage. ANY LEAKS: During the winter months roofs can leak in a number of areas. The most common include those around flashing. A roof inspection will check flashing to make sure you will not be at risk for water seepage throughout the winter. This will prove to be an easy and inexpensive fix compared to the damage caused during a major winter storm. MISSING SHINGLES: During the summer and fall season you can experience winds that are high enough to blow shingles right off your roof. If these missing shingles are not replaced before the snow starts to fall you can be faced with both leaks and insulation issues that can lead to some serious damage throughout the winter. Having missing shingles replaced will maintain the integrity of your roof all winter long. AM Roofing provides free no-obligation estimates for roof replacement/repairs and insulation. Bundle of Busy As the fall ramps up, a new cycle of “busyness” will begin for many of us. Make this fall different. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed from too many demands and things to do is not fun. The best way to avoid this is to not let it build up. It may seem impossible but that crazy “busyness” is probably more manageable than you think. Here are a few tips to keep you in a happy groove and manage your workload: 1. It is okay to say no – remember when you say no you are saying yes to something else. 2. Set realistic expectations – it is much better to under promise and over deliver. 3. When you are not sure what to do – ask yourself will this matter six months from now. 4. Be kind to yourself – just do your best and accept that none of us are perfect all of the time. 5. Work smarter - if it doesn’t work change it, doing the same thing will keep giving you the same result. 6. Add some balance – don’t forget to put some things you enjoy doing in your calendar. 7. Look after yourself – treat yourself like you are the Olympic athlete in your game of life. 8. Ask for help when you need it – when you make it look easy sometimes no one else knows the challenges you may experience. Worrying over our workload and that never ending to-do list can keep us from enjoying the present moment. Let go of the stress and be a bundle of joy! Patience is a Virtue Is it me? Or is it day to day life in general that seems to go by so quickly? Or do we just try to fit more in a day? My mother recited that “patience is a virtue”. My curiosity got the better of me so I googled it and sure enough Wikipedia offers it as a proverbial phrase and foot notes it to: “Meanings and Origins of Phrases, Sayings and Idioms”. Gary Martin. Retrieved 4 April 2010. Why should we try to take this phrase to heart? I think because as a society we appear to be more wound up and impatient than ever before. At the very least I catch myself being less patient. In fact I have to remind myself that “patience is a virtue” and hopefully I will receive the health benefits of being less stressed about things totally out of my control. An example of things requiring more patience is increased traffic on our highways taking us longer to get places. Or being stuck for almost two extra hours on highway 400 south bound this week because of a vehicle fire blocking north and south bound lanes. Consider that the average home in my neighbourhood often has two or three cars parked in the driveway. More cars and more traffic equals less patience. More traffic, more construction to handle equals less patience. You can probably think of many examples on your own. “Patience is a virtue” and something we can all strive for more of. Chances are if we do, we will feel the benefits of a more peaceful existence. I expect that’s what the proverb intended. Taking time to smell the roses and all flowers for that matter is the hidden blessing. My garden is at its peak for this time of year with all the perennials blooming. The pleasure I get from taking time to watch the hummingbirds and bees feasting on the nectar each flower contains is a remarkable calm to a hectic day. I encourage you to take some time for yourself to enjoy the beauty that surrounds you. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Patience while driving may just allow you to experience God’s beauty just that much longer. Enjoy your summer and be more patient. Brian A. Walk your kids back to school Active and Safe Routes to School is a program designed to assist school communities in encouraging safe and active travel to and from school. If the current trends continue we may no longer have a generation that will remember walking to school. Vehicle ownership is increasing steadily, resulting in congested roads and increased air pollution from transportation. As more people opt to drive to their destination, parent’s fears of traffic dangers and personal safety increase, forcing parents to drive their children to and from school. The Benefits of the Program: • Increased physical activity for children and youth • A healthier lifestyle for the whole family • Less traffic congestion around schools • Safer and calmer streets and neighbourhoods • Improved air quality and a cleaner environment How does Active and Safe Routes to School work?

African “change-makers” on tour For many years the African Children’s Choir has been delighting people around the world. They were in Meaford on August 14th, melting everyones hearts with their wonderful African songs and dances. The choir consists of children ages from 7 to 10 years old. Many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. The primary goal of the choir is to raise awareness of the destitute and orphaned children in Africa and give the children the tools to take back for a promising future. Photos/Story: Kimberley Merrifield

International Walk to School Day – takes places in early October and provides the perfect opportunity to start an ASRTS program. Neighbourhood Walkabouts – Ensures the routes to school are safe. Organized by parents and staff from the school, a site tour is conducted of the school area. Walk/Wheel Wednesday – Schools set aside once day a week to walk to school. Classes can have friendly competition to encourage walking. Walk a Block – Encourage parents to safely park their car a few blocks from the school, and then walk the remaining blocs with their children. Traffic congestion and pollution are reduced in the immediate school area. Walking School Buses – Volunteer parents who live on the same blocks take turns walking children to and from school. No Idling at School – Encourages motorists who stop outside schools to turn off their engines while they wait. Submitted by Kerri MacDonald, Environment Network, 44 St. Marie St. Collingwood. Nature’s Renewal: The Benefits of Plant Stem Cells for the Skin Recently, researchers have begun looking to plants as a source for stem cells, and those plant stem cells have proven to be effective in supporting the skin’s cellular turnover. Like human stem cells, plant stem cells develop according to their environment. Stem cells are unprogrammed cells that can differentiate into cells with specific functions. Stem cells have therefore a big potential in regenerative medicine. Regenerative therapies are used to stimulate healing. The inspiration for using plant stem cells in skin care came from an unusual source: an almost-extinct apple tree in Switzerland.

LIGHTHOUSE POINT

3 BDRM Garden Home with Gas Heat

COLLINGWOOD

Originally bred in the 18th century for their incredible shelf life, Uttwiler Spätlauber apples shrank into obscurity as modern shipping and storage caused longevity to take a backseat to flavour. Even more astonishing than the fruit’s long-lasting freshness was its ability to heal itself: When an apple was scratched while still on the tree, the skin would quickly regenerate and close the wound.

Income Producing Properties (Preferably Duplex’s and Triplex’s)

Scientists began to research the health benefits of plant stem cells and its application to the skin. Researchers found a way to extract stem cells from the plants and generate new ones in a lab, and they then started to investigate how human cells would react to them. The results were astonishing: They found the stem cells of the Edelweiss plant could stimulate human stem cell proliferation by 80% and could protect human stem cells against UV damage. In experiments on human skin, researchers discovered that the Edelweiss extract could decrease wrinkle depth by 20% in just two weeks. Users noticed a 95% difference in the overall look and feel of their skin. Edelweiss contains powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties while their stem cells also seem to be helpful in preventing collagen loss, firming and restructuring the skin, and preventing aging and sun damage.

Elephant Thoughts receives funding for inspired educational programs The Blue Mountain Village Foundation presented a donation of $7,225 to Elephant Thoughts Educational Outreach on August 5th in the Blue Mountain Village. Jeremy Rhodes and Tara Bailey received the cheque. “Elephant Thoughts would like to sincerely thank the BMVF for its continued support of our local programs. In a region as affluent as the Georgian Triangle it is easy to overlook the large number of families facing economic hardships. So many children in this area never get the chance to participate in the activites that most of our families take for granted from sports to camps to after school programs. We strive to ensure that those children get access to all the valuable programs and opportunities that the region has to offer. Thanks to this support, hundreds of children are going to have the opportunity to be inspired, to learn, to be excited about education, to discover. History takes off There was no fear of flying at The Clearview Public Library’s presentations of the Edenvale Aerodrome’s mini aero-plane pedal cars at this year’s Creemore Children’s Festival and the Gathering of the Classics. Children of all ages loved this “no plug” kind of interactive action with local history. Submitted by: Michele McKenzie

Copper Kettle Festival Kicking off the annual Copper Kettle Festival was The Creemore Farmers’ Market, then The Beinn Gorm Highlanders piped everyone down to Mad River Park where people enjoyed an amazing Beer Garden, fabulous food and drink, live music and kids’ activities. Live bands included Turbo Street Funk, Tia Brazda, Big Tobacco and the Pickers, Ron Hawkins and the Do Good Assassins, and also Not Ottawa featuring Roly Platt. Throughout the day families enjoyed wagon rides, pony rides, local artists, goldfish races and art by Imaginarium Adventures in Art, plus balloons and crafts by Darci-que and Emily. Creemore Springs Brewery hosts this annual festival to celebrate the beer and the village. Story/Photos: Bryan Davies Photography
