Get Your Haggis Piping Hot

In celebration of Robbie Burns Day and in keeping with tradition the Beaver & Bulldog Sports Bar had the haggis paraded proudly around their establishment. The ceremony would not be complete without the reading of Burns’ ‘Address to a Haggis’ which preceded the official ‘stabbing of the beast’ and a toast with Scotch whiskey. All then enjoyed sampling this fine Scottish dish! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

ON THE COVER THIS MONTH: For two years I have had the very difficult task of co-ordinating or choosing the cover photo for Georgian Life. While there was no shortage of great shots taken this month of people doing great things I decided to grace the cover with some winter art. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful thing... This piece was painted by Lazarus Ioannou and is called “Simcoe Squall”. Claiming to be one of his coldest paintings, I thought it was very suitable for the winter we have had this year. Currently his art can be found at: Matilda Swanson Gallery in Clarksburg, Owen Sound Artists’ Co-Op, MJG Gallery in Toronto and via appointment at his home studio in Collingwood.

Ringing in the new year we celebrated some pretty amazing folks who enrich the community life by contributing as volunteers to the improvement of arts, social, environmental, cultural, health and recreational conditions at the New Year’s Mayors Levee’s in both Wasaga Beach and Collingwood.

If you are a skier, boarder, snowmobiler or snowshoer, you are loving life - and if you’re more of an indoorsy type in the winter you will have no trouble finding some live entertainment, an art gallery to peruse or a cozy restaurant to dine in. Check out a full page of Local Event Listings on page 12. Please feel free to submit your events at www.georgianlife.ca - it’s free! We went to print before Groundhog Day, but my prediction is it will be cloudy when Wiarton Willie emerges from his burrow and spring will come early, so bundle up and get out there!

MARILYN

MANNY

Have you ever met a cat who chirps? Marilyn does. Scratch her in the right place and this adorable 4 year old will reward you with a series of high, little chirps of pure pleasure. Lively and playful, she’ll twirl in circles around your legs at feeding time. She also loves pampering time, being brushed and massaged, or simply being left to lie contentedly in the sun. Marilyn has been at GTHS for far too long and is looking for her forever family. Come to the Shelter to meet her today!

Manny is one of those gentle giants that quickly finds a way to your heart! This 3 year old boy has been at GTHS since April 2013 after his family surrendered him. They were not able to give him the attention and care he needed. Manny loves affection, play time and a cuddle session here and there. He is a fantastic companion and happy to simply be around his human friends. If you can give this boy a home for Valentine’s Day he will be sure to reward you with love!

Please note: these animals were available for adoption at the time we went to print. To inquire about their availability, or to inquire about other animals available for adoption please contact the Georgian Triangle Humane Society at 705-445-5204 or view their website at www.gths.ca.

The Cat’s Meow Re-opened in Meaford

MEAFORD

The other big apple... is happening!

When the Clarksburg Cat Shelter became a registered charity, they opened a charity shop in Clarksburg to help support approximately 60 cats. Now, one year later, the shop has moved to Meaford. On December 13, 2013, The Cat’s Meow, Finds of All Kinds, had its grand re-opening on Boucher Street, across from Jet Variety. Meaford Mayor Francis Richardson was in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony where he presented shelter President Karen Naish with a formal welcome to town. Even a snow storm didn’t stop dozens of visitors from coming by for a coffee and a first look at what was on the shelves. All items are donated by the public. The Cat’s Meow sells clean, previously loved housewares and small furniture. Learn more at www.clarksburgcatshelter.org. Submitted by: Kasey Naish

Darlene Stringer, owner of Blue Shores Flowers and Gifts in Wasaga Beach, started a new tradition this year. She will present the residents of the Waterside Retirement Lodge a corsage or boutonniere on their birthday. Don’t get lost Thankfully no one got lost (at least not that we know of :) at the 2014 Salomon Dontgetlost Snowshoe Raid. While the weather was bitterly cold, the intrepid mountain adventure racers strapped on the snowshoes and competed under some pretty gruelling course conditions. Everyone seemed to have an awesome time and while I got tired just watching them finish they didn’t seem any the worse for wear. Congratulations to Bob Miller, organizers, volunteers and participants on another great outdoor adventure! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Celiac Disease/Sprue & Gluten Sensitivity Gluten is a protein that makes dough sticky. Celiac disease or sprue, is an autoimmune disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract. Anyone diagnosed with this disease has to maintain a lifelong diet that avoids any gluten in their foods, which can be found in wheat, rye, spelt, kamut, barley ,and even oats and all foodstuffs that are made from these grains.

L. PATTEN & SONS LTD. Quality Custom Homes Since 1958

Gluten sensitivity is one where you may have a low level of tolerance without having any symptoms and may be experiencing health issues that are never linked to gluten. Autoimmune disorders can range and be directly linked to gluten intolerance but may not be recognized by your physician are thyroid disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, scleroderma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis. Digestive disorders can be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, reflux disease, ulcers, giardiasis and classic celiac. Headaches, behavioural problems, anemia, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, eczema, acne, hives, chronic infections, asthma, chronic cough, and the classic skin type of celiac dermatitis herpetiformis are all related strongly to gluten sensitivity. The above health issues are often treated as a health issue on its own, but when gluten is removed from the diet, the patient can recover. Gluten avoidance needs to be maintained for a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks for healing to happen. Many alcoholic drinks contain gluten. Rye, vodka, beer, whiskey, and many others need to be avoided. Hidden gluten can be found in peanut butters, sausages, cold cuts, processed foods, condiments and too many products to list. You need to read labels or get a guide that lists all foods that may contain gluten. Look for gluten free foods that include: breads, muffins, cereals, pastas, sauces, condiments, etc. They should say on the label that they are gluten free. Georgian Health Foods offers a wide range and great selection of high quality nutritional supplements, gluten free products as well as specialty foods not found in most grocery stores. They are able to help and guide you as to where to get started and what you should look for. They now have two locations to serve you: 10 Keith Ave. Unit 202 Collingwood (Cranberry Mews) 705-293-4040 and 1288 Mosley, Unit 6 Wasaga Beach 705-422-1919 www.georgianhealthfoods.com.

Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival The third annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival attracted a lot of local entries and some from as far away as Japan and Switzerland. Voting took place in the afternoon and awards were presented at The Gala in the evening. Artist exhibits and entertainment filled the RecPlex. Gary Cerantola and Diana Chycki and their team spearheaded this awesome event. Sawyer Bullock did his magic show, The Singing Triangle Squad performed and Rebecca Stevens and Shawn Crozier sang and played their guitars. Many awards were presented but the most interesting was The Platinum Award to young Devin Gillman for producing ``Wasaga Beach Zombie Mash`` in the Southern Georgian Bay Action Category, Sponsored by TD Waterhouse. A Taste of Paradise in Wasaga Beach provided delicious Caribbean food. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Anchors Away Ahoy! Welcome aboard to the thousands of locals and visitors who enjoyed this simply marvellous display over the holiday season. The Downtown Collingwood BIA, with the support of numerous wonderful sponsors, hosted their 3rd Annual Ice Sculpture Festival. In keeping with Collingwood’s marine heritage and history as a major shipbuilding centre the festival was appropriately nautically themed. The streets came alive with these colourful, shimmering ice sculptures and the town looked more beautiful than ever. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Be The Change The 6th season of this documentary series kicked off at the Gayety Theatre with a provocative film ‘Occupy Love’. The film “explores how the collapse of the old greed paradigm of concentrated wealth causing economic and ecological collapse has become a catalyst for a profound global awakening. It shares the thoughts of some of the world’s key visionaries on alternative systems of economics, sustainability, and empathy...” A truly thought provoking way to start off the New Year. Your Care Is Our Cause

Tips for selecting the perfect custom framed mirror:

FOUNDATION

e Is Our

Cause

Before shopping for the perfect one, it is important to consider the size of the room, wall, or space in which it will hang. If it is a small room, pay close attention to where it will be hung, as a framed mirror can really make a cramped room seem larger. Generally, placing a mirror across from a window or light source will expand the room and make it look larger. Show your room’s reflectivity, personality and style. Some framed mirrors have large, ornate frames that can act as a piece of art. Others are round, oval or modern for a unique look. They are available in many shapes and sizes, straight cut or beveled to fit any decorative need. Framed mirrors fit perfectly in any room! They’re stunning in bathrooms and many people won’t live without one in the bedroom. For children’s rooms, hang them at the child’s eye level. This will help the child feel special and also be useful. Mirrors look stunning over a fireplace mantle or at the end of a hallway. Many formal dining areas also have a mirror to make the room seem more spacious. If you’re looking for a way to open up a closed room, but don’t want to tear down any walls, a framed mirror is the perfect solution! It can magically transform a small room into something that feels much more spacious. Framed mirrors reflect the light and objects in front of them to create a larger feeling space. When placed across from an open window, they’re a wonderful way to bring in more natural light. Traditional framed mirrors are especially good at creating an illusion of more space. They effortlessly enhance the beauty in any sized room.

Snowmobilers and Snowshoers raised money for Easter Seals Snowarama, the annual fundraiser for Easter Seals Kids, was a great success for Clearview Township. Mayor Sandra Cooper, Mayor Ken Ferguson and Dr. Kellie Lietch, MP, were on hand for the event. Snowmobilers and snowshoers took part to collect pledges and enjoy a day outside, riding or hiking. The money that’s raised allows Easter Seals to help physically disabled children by providing them with funds to purchase mobility devices such as wheel chairs. Funds are also used to send children to summer camps. Charlene Myke, a development manager with Easter Seals, said that in the last five years the event has raised $47,000. This year should see another $20,000 raised. Photos/Story: Bryan Davies Photography

Linguine with White Clam Sauce Start with fresh clams and add a few ingredients to cook up one of the best of all pasta dishes. Don’t overcook the clams, or they will become tough. Ingredients • • • • • • •

1/2 cup dry white wine 2 dozen littleneck clams, scrubbed 1 packaage (16 oz.) linguine or spaghetti 1/4 cup olive oil 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Directions

Open 7 days a week 8am to 11pm 705-445-1431 12 Hurontario St., Collingwood

From Chef Mario, Brunello at 27 on Fourth

1. In nonreactive 5-quart Dutch oven, heat wine to boiling over high heat. Add clams; cook until clams open, 5 to 10 minutes, transferring clams to bowl as they open. Discard any clams that have not opened. 2. Strain clam broth through sieve lined with paper towels; set aside. When cool enough to handle, remove clams from shells and coarsely chop. Discard shells. 3. Meanwhile, in large saucepot, cook pasta as label directs. Drain. 4. Add oil, garlic, and crushed pepper to same clean Dutch oven. Cook over medium heat, stirring occassionally, just until garlic turns golden. Stir in parsley, clams, and clam broth; heat to just simmering. Add pasta to Dutch oven and toss until combined.

Experience Reconnected Balance Healing, medicine, and energy. What can these things have in common? They relate to Chinese energy healing: Reiki, Qi Gong. There is a grid of energy throughout the universe that encompasses everything, there is a grid around the earth, there is a grid around us.

This new energy has the ability to enter our body and it will determine what it is going to heal and it has it’s own time pattern. You can have a treatment and one or two weeks later notice something in your body is better, or feel it right away. It is hard to pin the universe down to a timeline.

There is a new form of Energy Healing and it is called Reconnective Healing®. It was discovered in California by Dr. Eric Pearl. He has pioneered studies on the healing frequencies running through him and their effects on people. Reconnective Healing® is a comprehensive healing approach, which completely transcends “energy healing” and it’s complex rituals and techniques. This energy can help everything from morning sickness to being allergic to wheat. There are many things involved - chakras, meridians, Etheric energy body, Emotional energy body, Mental Energy body, astral layer, and our Causal body.

Over time, Dr. Pearl also learned how to teach others to access these frequencies and, as such, to promptly and successfully facilitate healings for themselves and others. To date, 75,000 people around the world have been trained in Reconnective Healing®. Gary Campbell is one such person. Your Health is Their Concern

When the Music Stops: Treating the Emotional Hangover The holiday season, with its parties and celebration, heightened emotions and expectations, is behind us. However, experiencing an ‘emotional high’, for any length of time, usually comes with a crash afterward. Forget alcohol; intense emotion (and the adrenaline that accompanies it), also has a hangover effect. Feelings of emptiness, loneliness, anxiety, exhaustion and loss can suddenly wash over you, knocking you off your feet.

Collingwood’s Mayor Sandra Cooper was present for an official ribbon cutting at Georgian Health Foods’ second store in Collingwood at the Cranberry Mews. They have been open in Wasaga Beach for seven years and saw a need for a location on the west end of Collingwood. “Your health is our concern” is their motto, and they demonstrate that commitment with their experienced staff of nutritionists, quality supplements, a variety of gluten free food products, and clean body care lines. Their website and Ausra’s blog is very informative: www.georgianhealthfoods.com. Georgian Health Foods: 10 Keith Avenue, Unit 202 Collingwood. Photos: Dave West Photography

Emotional hangovers don’t just happen after celebrations. They happen after caregiving for any length of time, and when a loved one dies too. After a prolonged illness or death of a loved one, things are busy. There are plans to be made, forms to be filled out, visitations, the funeral: It is a whirlwind of activity and emotion. Not only is there a sense of grief and loss, but there may also be laughter and story-telling. Navigating the sea of family dynamics and interpersonal issues when people are emotionally fragile is one of the toughest challenges of grief. And the physical and emotional demands placed on the bereaved can leave them feeling like they’ve been caught in a tornado. But, just like its physical counterpart, there are things that can help with an emotional hangover: 1) Identify the cause, and try to understand it: As with most things in life, preparation can be everything. If you can identify the potential for emotional burnout/or an emotional hangover, then steps can be taken to prevent it. 2) Notice patterns: Are there certain people/situations that are ‘triggers’ for you? If so, are there ways to avoid them? Can you develop a ‘plan B’ so that you have an escape from a potentially toxic situation? 3) Nurture your Soul: Find an activity that is life-giving, not energy-draining. This is different for everyone. For one person this could mean meditating. For another it could mean going out dancing. 4) Let it Go: A lot of emotional energy often goes into replaying conversations, or situations over and over again, trying to process situations and outcomes. Finding a way to let the past be in the past can be very healing... by writing letters, journalling, etc. 5) Forgive Yourself: The worst part of any hangover is the regret…the “Would’ves, Should’ves, and Could’ves”. Be careful not to add to your injury by beating yourself up for things far beyond your control. 6) Talk to an objective 3rd party: often, we’re not as crazy as we think we are. Having an outside party listen to your story and validate (or ask questions) as needed, can do wonders for a person’s emotional well-being. That’s why ‘confession’ is such a powerful thing. Two Local Women Chosen for “Meshkanu” Elizabeth Penashue treks through the wilds of Labrador for a month every winter. This year she will be joined by two women from Collingwood: Jane McGillivray and Christy Deere. Jane grew up in Collingwood and moved to Labrador 30 years ago to practice medicine, and now runs Riversong Bed and Breakfast in North West River. Christy Deere lives in Collingwood where she runs Leap 2 Learn, an adventure based learning company with expeditions to Labrador. Like Elizabeth, both of these women feel passionately about protecting the Labrador wilderness and rivers. This will be the fifteenth trip for Elizabeth who began walking in the late 1990’s. At that time, she saw the traditional way of life eroding in her community. Alcohol and drug addictions and ill health brought on by processed food were taking a toll on everyone in the Innu Community of Sheshatshiu. Elizabeth grew up in the country and knew that many of the traditional skills for country living were not being passed down to her children and grand children. As well, the land she grew up on was being threatened from the various mining, timber and damming activities. She watched the movie Gandhi and thought that if a man in a far away country could bring attention for his people, maybe she could do this too. She began walking her own path, known as a “Meshkanu” in the Innu language. For years now Elizabeth has welcomed all sorts of people on her adventure. She travels by snowshoes, pulling sleds and hunts partridges, rabbits, porcupine and caribou along the way. Through the years the terrain has varied. This year the walk will start in her home community of Sheshatshiu along the shores of Lake Melville in Central Labrador. Her son Jack and his family will accompany her along with Jane, Christy and other guests. Together they will cross Lake Melville and head up the Kenamu River Valley, and through the Mealy Mountains.

Elizabeth says this year she is not going to be travelling quickly. Sadly, her husband Frances passed away this past year. She knows she will miss him, and wonders if this might be her last walk. Still, she hopes to walk about 8-10 kilometres per day. “We will pack up and walk for five hours or so, each day,” she says. Each night, traditional canvas Labrador tents will be set up. These are made wonderfully warm and cosy with a freshly picked spruce bow floor. There is a metal stove which warms the tent and dries out clothes and is also good for cooking. “I want people to know this is a good way to live. That the land gives us everything we need.” A short film can be seen at: http://blackkettlefilms.com/documentaries/. Canadians will spend an average of $140 million on chocolate for Valentines. But it’s important to choose the right kind of chocolate. Studies show the dark chocolate (not the sugary confectionary in the pretty boxes) can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease. Quality dark chocolate is rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese and a wide variety of antioxidants. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should go all out and consume lots of chocolate. Have a square or two after dinner and savour them. Here’s a recipe for a chocolate cake that is healthier than most.

Lucky Lady wins Leafs Tickets The Quota Club had their Hockey Raffle Draw at Raglan Village. The lucky winner was Linda Jones of Collingwood, Dr. O’Halloran’s Administrative Assistant. The prize was four tickets to a Toronto Maple Leaf game plus $150.00 cash. The money raised was given to E3 Community Services to provide a Merry Christmas for residents in the 12 group homes in this area. A number of the people in the group homes are known as “Children of the World.” This means they were given away at birth, placed in an institution and from there came to the group homes. This is the 3rd year that the Quota Club has provided a Merry Christmas for the residents in our group homes. Submitted by: Diane Keir

A “Mid-Life Crisis” can be a good thing Jim Harrison’s band proved that as they took home the honours as crowd favourite at the 3rd Annual Rotary Club of Collingwood’s Battle of the Bands adult competition. Winner of the youth competition was Midnight Low. The event, held over two nights at the Royal Canadian Legion, featured great music from youth bands the first night followed up by a stellar lineup of adult bands the next. The music was amazing and the competition fierce, and while someone had to go home victorious the real winner was the community as the net proceeds were destined for local charities. A fantastic couple of evenings of musical entertainment. Congratulations and kudos to all who organized and supported this great event! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Jason Booth Photography

Matilda Swanson Gallery

Hi, my name is Jason Booth. I started taking photos in the early 2000’s as a way of capturing moments in time spent hiking around the area, thinking “wow that would be a nice photo.” Then it caught, and I started seeing all the potential that was in my own backyard. Having grown up in Collingwood through the 80’s to early 90’s to now, I never realized what this town has, until I saw it through my Lens; Its Historical Beauty just blows me away.

WARNING: This gallery may contain too much colour for the average person; proceed with caution! At Matilda Swanson Gallery we offer bold statements, conversation pieces, paintings that will make a person smile. With a roster of over 45 Canadian artists (many of them local) we have an array of whimsical, high-realism, impressionist, abstract and mixed media artworks. Whether you are looking for art for your home, chalet and/or cottage, or all of the above, we are happy to assist you in the process. Our clients may take the paintings home and live with the art for a week or two before making a final decision. We offer a delivery service which is also free of charge.

Photography is more to me than just a picture. It’s Art! It tells a story, from historical, capturing the fall of a building that held so many memories for so many people, to an abandoned building and the mystery of what once was, I have been able to capture and help preserve Collingwood’s outstanding architectural marvels; to seeing the love of two people speak to each other through the lens. I am always working to improve my skill set and try new things with my clients; my vision, dedication and passion for the place and area I call home allows me to preserve the Natural Beauty that surrounds us every day and share that gift with you. Another branch of my passion is collecting and preserving area images and artifacts to allow me to keep those memories alive. To view my work or to contact me, please visit my website: jasonboothphotography.com

To complement the paintings, Matilda Swanson Gallery also has a unique and eclectic selection of pottery, wooden bowls, hand-made jewellery and other threedimensional artworks. Matilda Swanson Gallery puts the “fun” into art and the decision making process. Come in and experience firsthand the colourful and casual atmosphere, have a giggle, enjoy the area’s artistic talents and maybe even add or start your art collection!
