ON THE COVER THIS MONTH: For two years I have had the very difficult task of co-ordinating or choosing the cover photo for Georgian Life. While there was no shortage of great shots taken this month of people doing great things I decided to grace the cover with some winter art. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful thing... This piece was painted by Lazarus Ioannou and is called “Simcoe Squall”. Claiming to be one of his coldest paintings, I thought it was very suitable for the winter we have had this year. Currently his art can be found at: Matilda Swanson Gallery in Clarksburg, Owen Sound Artists’ Co-Op, MJG Gallery in Toronto and via appointment at his home studio in Collingwood.

The Cat’s Meow Re-opened in Meaford

The other big apple... is happening!
When the Clarksburg Cat Shelter became a registered charity, they opened a charity shop in Clarksburg to help support approximately 60 cats. Now, one year later, the shop has moved to Meaford. On December 13, 2013, The Cat’s Meow, Finds of All Kinds, had its grand re-opening on Boucher Street, across from Jet Variety. Meaford Mayor Francis Richardson was in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony where he presented shelter President Karen Naish with a formal welcome to town. Even a snow storm didn’t stop dozens of visitors from coming by for a coffee and a first look at what was on the shelves. Don’t get lost Thankfully no one got lost (at least not that we know of :) at the 2014 Salomon Dontgetlost Snowshoe Raid. While the weather was bitterly cold, the intrepid mountain adventure racers strapped on the snowshoes and competed under some pretty gruelling course conditions. Everyone seemed to have an awesome time and while I got tired just watching them finish they didn’t seem any the worse for wear. Celiac Disease/Sprue & Gluten Sensitivity Gluten is a protein that makes dough sticky. Celiac disease or sprue, is an autoimmune disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract. Anyone diagnosed with this disease has to maintain a lifelong diet that avoids any gluten in their foods, which can be found in wheat, rye, spelt, kamut, barley ,and even oats and all foodstuffs that are made from these grains.

Gluten sensitivity is one where you may have a low level of tolerance without having any symptoms and may be experiencing health issues that are never linked to gluten. Autoimmune disorders can range and be directly linked to gluten intolerance but may not be recognized by your physician are thyroid disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, scleroderma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis. Digestive disorders can be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, reflux disease, ulcers, giardiasis and classic celiac. Headaches, behavioural problems, anemia, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, eczema, acne, hives, chronic infections, asthma, chronic cough, and the classic skin type of celiac dermatitis herpetiformis are all related strongly to gluten sensitivity. The above health issues are often treated as a health issue on its own, but when gluten is removed from the diet, the patient can recover. Gluten avoidance needs to be maintained for a minimum of 3 to 4 weeks for healing to happen. Many alcoholic drinks contain gluten. Rye, vodka, beer, whiskey, and many others need to be avoided. Hidden gluten can be found in peanut butters, sausages, cold cuts, processed foods, condiments and too many products to list. You need to read labels or get a guide that lists all foods that may contain gluten. Look for gluten free foods that include: breads, muffins, cereals, pastas, sauces, condiments, etc. They should say on the label that they are gluten free. Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival The third annual Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival attracted a lot of local entries and some from as far away as Japan and Switzerland. Voting took place in the afternoon and awards were presented at The Gala in the evening. Artist exhibits and entertainment filled the RecPlex. Gary Cerantola and Diana Chycki and their team spearheaded this awesome event. Sawyer Bullock did his magic show, The Singing Triangle Squad performed and Rebecca Stevens and Shawn Crozier sang and played their guitars. Many awards were presented but the most interesting was The Platinum Award to young Devin Gillman for producing ``Wasaga Beach Zombie Mash`` in the Southern Georgian Bay Action Category, Sponsored by TD Waterhouse. Rotarians give cash donation to the Food Bank The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach and area presents a cheque to Christina We invite you to come in to see our beautiful selection of Armstrong for the Ministerial Food Bank. The amount of $7,000 represents proceeds from last year’s Corvette Lottery. This money has been directed toward providing Easter Hampers to approx. 300 families. Each month the food bank assists more than 120 families that represents more than 800 people, including children.

Snowmobilers and Snowshoers raised money for Easter Seals Snowarama, the annual fundraiser for Easter Seals Kids, was a great success for Clearview Township. Mayor Sandra Cooper, Mayor Ken Ferguson and Dr. Kellie Lietch, MP, were on hand for the event. Snowmobilers and snowshoers took part to collect pledges and enjoy a day outside, riding or hiking. The money that’s raised allows Easter Seals to help physically disabled children by providing them with funds to purchase mobility devices such as wheel chairs. Funds are also used to send children to summer camps. Charlene Myke, a development manager with Easter Seals, said that in the last five years the event has raised $47,000. Linguine with White Clam Sauce Start with fresh clams and add a few ingredients to cook up one of the best of all pasta dishes. Don’t overcook the clams, or they will become tough. Ingredients • • • • • • •
1/2 cup dry white wine 2 dozen littleneck clams, scrubbed 1 packaage (16 oz.) linguine or spaghetti 1/4 cup olive oil 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

1. In nonreactive 5-quart Dutch oven, heat wine to boiling over high heat. Add clams; cook until clams open, 5 to 10 minutes, transferring clams to bowl as they open. Discard any clams that have not opened. 2. Strain clam broth through sieve lined with paper towels; set aside. When cool enough to handle, remove clams from shells and coarsely chop. Discard shells. 3. Meanwhile, in large saucepot, cook pasta as label directs. Drain. 4. Add oil, garlic, and crushed pepper to same clean Dutch oven. Cook over medium heat, stirring occassionally, just until garlic turns golden. Stir in parsley, clams, and clam broth; heat to just simmering. Add pasta to Dutch oven and toss until combined.

Communities come together for Tanya Friends and family of Tanya Prentice held a dinner-dance fundraiser for her at Creemore Legion. Tanya is undergoing treatment for a rare form of cancer of the appendix. The event raised over $7,200 to support the Prentices. When the Music Stops: Treating the Emotional Hangover The holiday season, with its parties and celebration, heightened emotions and expectations, is behind us. However, experiencing an ‘emotional high’, for any length of time, usually comes with a crash afterward. Forget alcohol; intense emotion (and the adrenaline that accompanies it), also has a hangover effect. Feelings of emptiness, loneliness, anxiety, exhaustion and loss can suddenly wash over you, knocking you off your feet.

Emotional hangovers don’t just happen after celebrations. They happen after caregiving for any length of time, and when a loved one dies too. After a prolonged illness or death of a loved one, things are busy. There are plans to be made, forms to be filled out, visitations, the funeral: It is a whirlwind of activity and emotion. Not only is there a sense of grief and loss, but there may also be laughter and story-telling. Navigating the sea of family dynamics and interpersonal issues when people are emotionally fragile is one of the toughest challenges of grief. And the physical and emotional demands placed on the bereaved can leave them feeling like they’ve been caught in a tornado. But, just like its physical counterpart, there are things that can help with an emotional hangover: 1) Identify the cause, and try to understand it: As with most things in life, preparation can be everything. If you can identify the potential for emotional burnout/or an emotional hangover, then steps can be taken to prevent it. 2) Notice patterns: Are there certain people/situations that are ‘triggers’ for you? If so, are there ways to avoid them? Can you develop a ‘plan B’ so that you have an escape from a potentially toxic situation? 3) Nurture your Soul: Find an activity that is life-giving, not energy-draining. This is different for everyone. For one person this could mean meditating. For another it could mean going out dancing. 4) Let it Go: A lot of emotional energy often goes into replaying conversations, or situations over and over again, trying to process situations and outcomes. Finding a way to let the past be in the past can be very healing... by writing letters, journalling, etc. 5) Forgive Yourself: The worst part of any hangover is the regret…the “Would’ves, Should’ves, and Could’ves”. Be careful not to add to your injury by beating yourself up for things far beyond your control. 6) Talk to an objective 3rd party: often, we’re not as crazy as we think we are. Having an outside party listen to your story and validate (or ask questions) as needed, can do wonders for a person’s emotional well-being. That’s why ‘confession’ is such a powerful thing. Rotary Gives a Jump Start The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach and area presents a cheque to Marc Wolvin, the regional manager for Jump Start for Eastern/Northern Ontario. The amount of $2,000 represents proceeds from last year’s Corvette Lottery. Jump Start helps under-privileged kids get active in sports or other activities. All monies raised in our area are used locally. In total 129 kids were helped in 2013, and 473 have been helped since 2008.
Two Local Women Chosen for “Meshkanu” Elizabeth Penashue treks through the wilds of Labrador for a month every winter. This year she will be joined by two women from Collingwood: Jane McGillivray and Christy Deere. Jane grew up in Collingwood and moved to Labrador 30 years ago to practice medicine, and now runs Riversong Bed and Breakfast in North West River. Christy Deere lives in Collingwood where she runs Leap 2 Learn, an adventure based learning company with expeditions to Labrador. Like Elizabeth, both of these women feel passionately about protecting the Labrador wilderness and rivers. This will be the fifteenth trip for Elizabeth who began walking in the late 1990’s. At that time, she saw the traditional way of life eroding in her community. Alcohol and drug addictions and ill health brought on by processed food were taking a toll on everyone in the Innu Community of Sheshatshiu. Elizabeth grew up in the country and knew that many of the traditional skills for country living were not being passed down to her children and grand children. As well, the land she grew up on was being threatened from the various mining, timber and damming activities. She watched the movie Gandhi and thought that if a man in a far away country could bring attention for his people, maybe she could do this too. She began walking her own path, known as a “Meshkanu” in the Innu language. For years now Elizabeth has welcomed all sorts of people on her adventure. She travels by snowshoes, pulling sleds and hunts partridges, rabbits, porcupine and caribou along the way. Through the years the terrain has varied. This year the walk will start in her home community of Sheshatshiu along the shores of Lake Melville in Central Labrador. Her son Jack and his family will accompany her along with Jane, Christy and other guests. Together they will cross Lake Melville and head up the Kenamu River Valley, and through the Mealy Mountains.

Elizabeth says this year she is not going to be travelling quickly. Sadly, her husband Frances passed away this past year. She knows she will miss him, and wonders if this might be her last walk. Still, she hopes to walk about 8-10 kilometres per day. “We will pack up and walk for five hours or so, each day,” she says. Each night, traditional canvas Labrador tents will be set up. Wasaga Beach Lions Club Peace Poster Contest
Heart-Shaped Pizza’s are back February 14th
Wasaga Beach Lions Club sponsored the Peace Poster Contest in our community to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. The contest was open to children ages 11, 12 or 13 in local schools or organized, sponsored youth groups. Annually, more than 350,000 entries are submitted worldwide in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest, and posters advance through the district, multiple district and international levels of competition. The grand prize includes a cash award of US$2,500 plus a trip for the winner and two family members to New York City, New York for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners each receive a certificate and a cash award of US$500. This years winners were: First place - Brian Teves, 2nd place - Sophie Kerluke Harris and 3rd place – Jessica Lopes all from St. Noel school. We also had entries from Birchview Dunes, Worsley and True North Academy. Cash prizes were awarded to each student. Congratulations to all the students who participated and to the teachers who helped give them this opportunity. We are looking forward to our 2014 competition. See you then. Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly oil a 9 inch round cake pan. In a small bowl, blend first four wet ingredients, stirring to dissolve rice syrup into the milk. In a separate small bowl, mix next five ingredients. Pour liquid ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just mixed. Fold in berries and chocolate. Spread mixture evenly into cake pan and bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool before serving. TECHNOLOGY LTD

Canadians will spend an average of $140 million on chocolate for Valentines. But it’s important to choose the right kind of chocolate. Studies show the dark chocolate (not the sugary confectionary in the pretty boxes) can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease. Quality dark chocolate is rich in fiber, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese and a wide variety of antioxidants. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should go all out and consume lots of chocolate. Have a square or two after dinner and savour them. Here’s a recipe for a chocolate cake that is healthier than most.

Lucky Lady wins Leafs Tickets The Quota Club had their Hockey Raffle Draw at Raglan Village. The lucky winner was Linda Jones of Collingwood, Dr. O’Halloran’s Administrative Assistant. The prize was four tickets to a Toronto Maple Leaf game plus $150.00 cash. The money raised was given to E3 Community Services to provide a Merry Christmas for residents in the 12 group homes in this area. A number of the people in the group homes are known as “Children of the World.” This means they were given away at birth, placed in an institution and from there came to the group homes. The addition of these six fabulous new trails (complete with lights, snowmaking equipment and of course the new Orchard Express high speed six person chair lift) has increased the recreational terrain at Blue (already the largest ski resort in Ontario) by more than 20 percent! A “Mid-Life Crisis” can be a good thing Jim Harrison’s band proved that as they took home the honours as crowd favourite at the 3rd Annual Rotary Club of Collingwood’s Battle of the Bands adult competition. Winner of the youth competition was Midnight Low. The event, held over two nights at the Royal Canadian Legion, featured great music from youth bands the first night followed up by a stellar lineup of adult bands the next. The music was amazing and the competition fierce, and while someone had to go home victorious the real winner was the community as the net proceeds were destined for local charities. Hi, my name is Jason Booth. I started taking photos in the early 2000’s as a way of capturing moments in time spent hiking around the area, thinking “wow that would be a nice photo.” Then it caught, and I started seeing all the potential that was in my own backyard. Having grown up in Collingwood through the 80’s to early 90’s to now, I never realized what this town has, until I saw it through my Lens; Its Historical Beauty just blows me away.
