Succos In The New
West Hempstead It is with incredible pleasure & enthusiasm to introduce to you our fourth, and very special issue of The West Hempstead Jewish Journal. As we go to print, you can feel the community’s tremendous energy in getting ready for Succos. To all the dozens of new families who've just moved into West Hempstead in the past few months, we welcome you, & know you’ll love your first Succos in town. With so many Shul events, you can be sure you and your children will be busy. I’d like to thank all of our incredible Advertisers and Writers for their continuous excitement and enthusiasm. (Even the advertisers that couldn't make it in this time around, we thank you too – I’m sure that when we begin to publish on a monthly basis, maybe even team up with a decently known newspaper, we know you'll be back!) Our Personal Connection With Hashem
RABBI YITZIE ROSS
RABBI JOSH GOLLER
One of the major themes of the ימים Immediately after we got married, my wife and I moved to West נוראים, is the crowning and exaltation of Hashem as our ;מלךour king. Hempstead. Originally, we lived on Junard and davened at Eitz Chayim, Truthfully, He is our king all year round. However, we particularly recognize this and shortly thereafter we moved to important status during these Holy days Spruce street and began Davening at by calling Him המלך הקדוש. HANC’s ECC. We loved the community, on the Page5-10 What is most unique is the although we had toContinued relocate to placement and location of this title. חז"ל, Towns a few years later. Nevertheless, our sages, placed the ברכהof המלך הקדוש, the years we spent in West Hempstead the substitute of ל הקדוש-הא, immediately were amazing, and I have very fond after we have just recited a list of other memories of the wonderful community virtues in that we were connected to. Singing Ashamnu MR. JEFF BALLABON The widely accepted Minhag Yisrael is to chant Vidui – “Ashamnu. Bagadnu. Gazalnu. Dibarnu Dofi. Etc.” – with a unique melody. When I was young it felt uncomfortable: How can we be singing these words? Shouldn’t we be stricken with remorse? Trembling with fear? It’s not a dirge, not particularly mournful, not at all sorry – and it seems utterly dissonant –contradictory to the ideas being expressed. “We are Guilty. We have Betrayed. We have Robbed. We have Slandered. Etc.” Continued on Page 16

First Time Home Buyers Guide
Do’s, Don’tsAndOhG-d,YouDidn’t, DidYou?!?! In today’s real estate market there are more listed homes for sale accessible to buyers than in past years. Whether that be for sale by owner, auctions, or listed homes on Long Islands Multiple Listing Service, the internet has changed the face of searching for a home dramatically. I’ve heard of people finding their home on Zillow, Facebook and even Craigslist. The internet offers more choices and methods of purchasing a home but information into the actual process of purchasing that home remains something less “exciting” and is more often ignored until someone is actively in the throes of a complex transaction. In This Issue Late August, just a few short weeks ago, our community came together for an inspirational night of heartfelt singing and dancing at the 2nd Annual West Hempstead KUMZITZFEST led by Tzvi Schwartz. From Shifchi Kamayim to Diaspora Yeshiva Band’s Hafachta, everyone felt uplifted and closer to HaShem for just a few moments. Dancing hand in hand with all our Rabbonim, listening to their stories / Divrei Torah as they introduced each melody, partaking in the incredible Melava Malka provided by I&D Glatt and Cedar Market... it was a night to remember!
Taking The Entire West Hempstead’s Learning To Another Level.
The children made apple-shaped Shana Tova cards for their families which they decorated They then had the privilege of a special visit from our local post office supervisors and mail carrier.

FROM THE EDITOR By Sender Gross Continued From The Front Cover This Special Succos Edition of the Newspaper shows the tremendous potential our flourishing community has shown. Whether you’ve noticed it or not, the growth this neighborhood has had in past few years is nothing other than remarkable. With the influx of over 700 new families in town, they say we’re closing in at close to 2,100 families in town. Our community has been blessed with many new young Rabbanim, and professionals who moved in, bringing in with them an abundance of ideas and plans to bring things to life and make important changes. May Hashem continue to bless us, our families, and this community. We encourage all of our readers, even those who just look at the Advertisements, to send us feedback, questions, comments and suggestions. In addition, if you have any content you feel would be helpful to our newspaper and community, please let us know. Wishing all of our readers and advertisers a Chag Sameach

RABBI GOLLER Continued from front cover… the preceding ברכה. We just mentioned that He is ;מכלכל חיים בחסדhe sustains us with kindness. He is a ;רופא חוליםa healer of the sick. He is a ;סומך נופלים a supporter of those who need support. R’ Shimshon Pincus זצ"לpointed out that these 2 expressions could not be more contrary from one another. In the prior ברכה, we speak of very real, relevant, functional things that Hashem does for us. He is there and involved in our most mundane, every day activities. In the expression of המלך הקדוש, we exclaim that He holy; so much so that he is in a different realm. Hashem is separate from us. Yet, this is the greatness of Hashem. He can be both the grand and majestic King, above and beyond our comprehension. But he can also be the relevant supporter, healer and sustainer that we need to relate to on a daily basis. Hashem is both our grand מלך, but at the same time our supporter and person we lean on daily. The same can be said for our community. We are blessed to be part of a large and growing Jewish community. It provides all the amenities of a “mega community”: multiple minyanim, a plethora of learning and abundant chessed opportunities. Yet, at the same time that it serves as a giant of a community, it also maintains a very personal feel. Our community creates an atmosphere of focus on each individual and their needs. This dual feeling and environment is rare indeed and , in my humble opinion, is what makes our community so special for so many. As we now come to Sukkos, I am reminded of the Midrashic interpretation of the 4 species. Each part of the mitzvah of lulav: the esrog, lulav, hadas and aravah, represent a different group of the Jewish People. We go from the Esrog, symbolizing the people of great creed and deed, to the arava, symbolizing those with far less. Nevertheless, each have an integral part in completing the mitzvah. I would add then that each of us, no matter who we are, have a part in making this community as great as it is. Each of of adds to the totality of making it as amazing as it is. May we each feel the connection to both our אב and our מלך, personally experiencing the grandeur and personal touch of Hashem. May we feel a close connection to and feel the warmth of our amazing community. Lastly, may we all find our personal share in and way to contribute to only make it better, stronger, closer and more elevated Wishing all of us and our families a chag sameach and good yom tov!

INFANTS CHILDREN ADULTS
BOARD CERTIFIED
One Shabbos, we were invited to a family that brought up an interesting discussion at the Shabbos table. Should parents be “friends” with their children? Keep in mind that I had only gotten married a few months earlier, so I thought I knew everything about children. As the years passed, I realized that I knew almost nothing about children. Coincidentally, my parents seemed to be a lot smarter than I remembered. In any case, during this discussion, the father (who was a Talmid Chochom) was concerned that his wife had become overly friendly with their 12-year-old daughter. My initial reaction when they asked my opinion was confusion. Isn’t is beautiful that parents and kids are so friendly? I had been a 7th-grade Rebbe for about 7 years at the time, and it seemed to me that this father was being overly cautious. Before I could state my opinion, my wife gently reminded me via the “Shin” method that I shouldn’t get involved. I didn’t. Women usually have a better understanding regarding acceptable social behaviors, and I’m glad she stopped me before I got involved. As the years passed, I began responding to parenting questions online at yidparenting.com and besides the thousands of online readers, and it was picked up in many newspapers. I still listen to my wife. When this question was asked to me a few years ago, I remembered this Shabbos discussion. I finally understood why the father was uncomfortable with the friendship. These days, more and more parents are becoming friends with their children. On the surface, this seems to be wonderful. What a beautiful sight - parents and children hanging out like best friends. However, the problems engendered with such a relationship can be quite serious. Let’s state at the outset that children need a lot from their parents, but we can narrow it down to two main elements. The first ingredient is, of course, love. This includes, (but is not limited to) hugging, kissing, complimenting (most beneficial when done sincerely and specifically), and constant smiles. Love helps children develop into healthy, confident adults with a strong selfesteem. The second ingredient, we’ll call nurture. This includes, (but is not limited to) guidance, discipline, physical assistance (e.g., changing diapers when they’re babies, helping organize their bedroom when they’re older), and more. Continued from front cover…
Indeed, we have. And now we are being judged. And we are confessing to the One who knows that we’ve done all these – and more. The One who sees everything and forgets nothing. So why, for Heaven’s sake, are we singing these jaunty “Ay-ay-ays”? R’ Shlomo Zalman Horowitz, the Potoker Rov, asks this question in his sefer Beis Aharon. First, of all, he points out, we are adjured to “Ivdu es Hashem b'simchah” – “Serve Hashem with joy.” T’shuvah, too, is an avodah that must be b'simchah. As the Bobover Rebbe, R Ben Tzion Halberstam notes in Kedushas Tzion on the verse in Vayigash, “Ve’ata al te’atzvu” “and now be not despondent” – Chazal have taught us that “v’ata/and now” – specifically means “t’shuvah”. But this, says the Potoker Rov, only begs the question: how can anyone rejoice when honest repentance implies a broken heart and utter regret? And to answer this he cites an amazing parable from the Rishonim: Imagine an individual is, Rachmana litzlan, paralyzed. They have lost all feeling in their limbs. Daily the doctors come, they poke and they prod every extremity with a sharp object, hoping for some sign of sensation. But the patient feels nothing. As the weeks turn to months, the doctors try every kind of medication, every surgery, every therapy – to no avail. Each morning they stick the patient’s hands and feet with a sharp object and still, nothing. The limbs are dead. As time goes on, the doctors grow weary and the patient grows more and more despondent, until both doctors and patient despair of the patient ever regaining the use of their body. After a year, seemingly just going through the motions, a doctor pokes the patient who feels a sharp, stabbing pain and lets out a cry! The doctors immediately let out huge grins and start clapping each other on the back. “Why are you rejoicing in my pain?,” the shocked and bewildered patient demands. “Don’t you understand?,” exult the doctors. “That pain means your limbs are still alive! That pain means you can be healed!” And suddenly the patient is filled anew with hope and happiness. Imagine the joy of that pain – nerves are repairing; all is not lost – the patient feels again! So too, is the spiritual healing process. It seems so long from last Yamim Nora’im. And over the weeks and months, we have rationalized our sins, become apathetic to our failings, numb to the barriers we have erected between ourselves and the Almighty. But the time of judgment is here, and the time of atonement. If we are being honest with ourselves, we must be wondering: are sinners like us truly capable of return? And, of course, the answer is Yes! We always are capable of t’shuvah! All we have to do is genuinely want to return. Hashem has promised us. What is needed is that we open even the tiniest conduit; what is needed is that we feel the pain. If a person genuinely feels the pain of their transgressions; if a person feels bitter remorse and confesses, then that person can – indeed must – be b'simchah. It is a sign that the person yet lives, because a rasha—a truly wicked person - would not feel the burden of their sin, and about them Chazal have taught that “reshaim bechayeihem kruyim meisim” – “The wicked even while yet living in this world are considered dead.” And this, says the Potoker Rov, is why Klal Yisrael sings Ashamnu as though we are rejoicing, to show that we are b'simchah, not despite our feelings of guilt and remorse, but precisely because we actually feel the pain of sin, and this signals to us that we are fully capable of returning to Hashem with t’shuvah sheleimah, that we truly are alive. In the midst of our trembling and awe, how can we not be truly b'simchah at such a revelation?

RABBI ROSS Continued from page 27
I know this sounds funny, but for many people, the easiest ages to raise children from a love vs. nurture standpoint, is newborns and older teenagers. The reason is, because your job is more clearly delineated. Newborns need lots of love (and some diaper changes obviously). Older teenagers are, well, teenagers. They are much harder to discipline, and don’t necessarily respond well to loving gestures. “Why do I have to text you when I get there?!”, is all the proof you need. The most difficult ages for most parents regarding this topic though, is from ages 313. During these ages, it can be extremely difficult to find the right balance. When your three-year-old colors on the wall, do you discipline or laugh it off? There are many different parenting styles, and it’s most important for parents to work together whichever approach they agree upon. However, in most cases, as children mature, the parent’s role frequently becomes more of a disciplinarian (nurturing aspect). This is mainly because more discipline and guidance/advice are needed as children get older. As a result, it can become difficult for parents who want to be their child’s “friend” (the “love” aspect). As parents, they may feel these conflicting emotions inside, but they must understand what their child really needs. She doesn’t need you to be her friend. She needs you to guide her, whether it means giving a consequence, disciplining her, or even having a serious conversation. Here’s an example. If your son disrespects you in front of the other kids, you don’t want to say, “He must be
having a bad day, we’re still ‘cool’. You must switch into the nurture mode, and deal with it appropriately. Another mistake that parents are often guilty of, is treating a child as their confidante. Your child is not mature enough, emotionally or intellectually, to play that role. When you make your child your confidante, you are in fact saying that you and the child are codecision makers. However, you and your child are not co-decision makers in any realistic way. This doesn’t mean your kids can’t share their opinion when appropriate. Of course, they can tell you what they like and dislike. But certainly decisions, especially important ones, and sometimes even certain minor ones, must be made by you, the parent. Believe it or not, children thrive with this type of structure, and it gives them the skills they require to become good parents down the line. Here are a few fun tidbits to think about. A good measure of your relationship with your child is the word “No”. If you never tell that to your children, something is wrong. Parents that are too friendly with their children end up feeling resentful when their children move on in life. They feel a remarkable sense of loss and might compensate for it by blaming the child. If you are overly friendly with your child, it is possible to change, but it needs to be done gradually. Although we discussed this in previous articles, it bears repeating. Parents in divorced families will often, albeit unintentionally, become the child’s confidante. The child gets stuck painfully in the middle, which is not fair to him/her. It’s very hard to discipline your child if you put yourself on an equal footing with them. Most importantly, keep in mind that your children don’t need your friendship. They need to know that there is someone who will always love them unconditionally and be in control, guiding and assisting them. Have a wonderful Yom Tov! YR

Over 300 Attend An Extraordinary West Hempstead Community Night of Singing Just a few short weeks ago, our community came together for an inspirational night of heartfelt singing and dancing at the 2nd Annual West Hempstead KUMZITZFEST led by Tzvi Schwartz.

Continued From Front Cover transaction. Obviously the first thing a potential home buyer needs to do is consult with a mortgage broker in order to know exactly what they can afford. We have seen transactions get derailed when a buyer assumed their budget was a lot higher and only upon executing the paperwork, was made aware that they were priced out. We urge all our buyers to see a mortgage broker before even seeing a single house so they can be realistic about their options and get the most out of their budget. We don’t want to waste your time showing you a home that is out of reach. Once you have a pre-approval a good broker will keep you within that range and often guide you how to leverage that knowledge into making a competitive and ultimately successful offer. When viewing a home it’s important to take an inventory of what can be an easy fix and what will be more daunting to tackle, both financially and time-wise. An engineer will point these things out before going into contract, but to save yourself time and emotional investment a seasoned agent should be able to see these things the first time walking through the house. These seemingly small things make the process that much smoother - letting you make an educated decision every step of the way. When you have finally found your dream home, making an offer is as much an art as it is a science. The dollar amount, albeit the most important aspect, isn’t the only consideration. Terms of a deal are a very important aspect to consider. We have seen sellers accept a lower offer that proposed more money down upon signing or even a due to an agreed closing date within 30 days of signing. A broker will often know the best ways to leverage an offer and guide you along the way. Often times an offer leads to a counter-offer and/or negotiation – if you haven’t engaged in this type of negotiation before it can be hard to navigate. Using your leverage to your advantage and understanding what favorable terms can “sweeten the pot” for the seller without costing you anything can make all the difference. A side note: Many first time home buyers sign paperwork with a broker to have that broker exclusively advocate for them. That sounds nice in theory but often times that can shrink your options depending on which agents have exclusive listings. Buyer brokerage most often requires the buyers to pay the commission due to their agent, (in most cases payable by the seller) which always impacts the amount one can afford since the bottom line finances need to take that debit into account. If you do sign with a buyer broker just beware that often times it may be limiting in terms of seeing all inventory on the market and costing you more than you bargained for. If you are not using a buyer broker your agent will provide you with a simple disclosure that says they are the listing agent or that they are working as an extension of the listing agent. This means they are technically working for the seller (who will ultimately be responsible for the commission), but this doesn’t mean they don’t have your best interest in mind as well. At Sharona Beck Realty although we are generally representing the seller we are working for “the good of the deal”. We know that a deal doesn’t happen unless both parties in the transaction walk away happy and so in the end that’s the ultimate goal that we strive to accomplish each and every time. Obviously, there are many other in’s and out’s of the process including appraisal, contingencies, mortgage commitments, concessions, etc. but keeping all this information in mind and working with an agent can save you a lot of time and energy while guiding you every step of the way. ______________

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”
THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS OF WEST HEMPSTEAD
Getting To Know Danny Friedman He’s Been Seen Online, And Really Make An Impression. We’ve Had The Pleasure To Speak With The Man Behind His New Social Media Marketing Agency, Concepte
Daniel ‘Danny’ Friedman, the West Hempstead man behind his Cedarhurst-based agency set out to launch a company that would help shape the world from a creative standpoint
aniel, great to speak to you, so you grew up in West Hempstead, and now you’ve started this marketing agency, Koncepte, but before we jump into that, let’s just get a quick background scoop on yourself and growing up in the Stead. Sure. My family moved to West Hempstead when I was five and they’ve been there ever since. I loved growing up there and have a lot of friends from the area, many of which have come back and put down their own roots. My wife and I hope to do the same one of these years.
D
Nice, so what gave you the drive to start this agency up? What’s it all about? Well, for one thing, I’m a terrible employee (laughs). In all seriousness, the reason I started Koncepte was because I wanted to use my creativity to help people with great ideas market those great ideas and to help them become more than they ever thought
44
possible. The reality is that a business can be so much more than just another player in its industry. You can stand out, you can make an impact on peoples’ lives, you can become an integral part of the community. A lot of marketing agencies today have lost that sense of creativity and have prioritized other things at its expense, and I felt very strongly that Koncepte needed to be built on an emphasis of creative and imagination. We needed to bring value back to the client, particularly on the digital side. I like to say that, in many ways, we’re the anti-marketing agency marketing agency. Wow, incredible. How many clients do you market for? Koncepte has grown tremendously in its 15-month existence. Over that brief time period, we’ve serviced over 20 clients, growing in size and scope and working some of the most recognizable local businesses in their respective industries, like Wheels To Lease and Sno-Haus, among others. We pride ourselves on our versatility; we don’t limit our work to one or two industries. Whether you sell bananas or Buicks, we’ll market you and we’ll do a great job of it. Honestly, if there was a banana here, I’d totally eat it. Off the record, it’s like one of my top 10 foods. But putting fruits in reserve, it’s incredible work you’re doing, and it seems like you’re doing a fantastic job. Nothing comes easy though. What would you say is the most difficult or pressurizing part of the job? I’d say that creativity is a blessing and a curse. I know that I’ll come up with that big idea, but how and when that happens is completely unpredictable. It’s not necessarily the kind of thing you’ll find if you force yourself to; sometimes, you’ll get it from a brainstorming session and other times, you’ll get it when you’re walking to your car. We always churn out our client work on schedule (often ahead of schedule), but the process can be interesting and often involves extra coffee. Wow sounds tricky. But hey, coffee is great. Perhaps you’ll give Keurig a call and ask if they’ll barter a marketing deal for some free K-Kups. So, say I’ve just started up my
own business, have no idea how to market it, or get the word out there, where do you come in? First off, If you’ve started your own business, good for you. That’s awesome. It’s a big accomplishment even to get to the point where you can put the “open” sign on the door. Second, the role an agency like Koncepte can play is to sit down with you and develop your marketing strategy. What’s your brand? What does it stand for? What’s the backstory and the characteristics that make your business unique? We’re going to work with you to flesh out your entire business so that you’re not just “Dan’s Marketing Agency,” for example. Now, you’re “Koncepte.” Why? Because you represent creativity and ideas, the blank canvas, the endless marketing solutions to any challenge our clients face. That’s the difference. Thanks so much again Daniel, before we go, can you give some advice to young entrepreneurs who want to start their own business, because, as you know, it’s an intimidating and frightening undertaking - how should one push through? I have two pieces of advice: The first is that you need to throw away whatever notion you currently have of what’s considered a hard day’s work. In many cases, the idea of a 9-to-5 day is pretty much nonexistent. You have to be willing to dedicate additional time and perhaps even weekends to your business, especially at the beginning. If you’re employee #1 out of 1, you’re wearing a lot of hats. It’s something you can do but only if you’re willing to put in the time and effort. The second thing is that, as challenging as running a business can be, there is a reason you decided to go down that road. It’s easy to consume yourself with the question of how on earth you’re going to pull this off, but there’s a much more exciting question to be asking as well, and that’s the question of how amazing it’s going to feel to be running a successful business and to know that you’re accomplishing what you’ve set out to. The journey can be rocky, you might have some turbulence, but as long as you have the right mindset and you’re providing value to your customers, you’re going to get there. Keep your eye on the ball.

ANDREW WEISSMAN IS NOW WITH ONCALLCARE To the West Hempstead community, For the past nine years, it has been my pleasure to serve as your clinician and friend. I am so grateful and humbled that you invited me into your homes and entrusted me with your care. As a PA and member of this community, I have cultivated friendships and forged bonds with you in a truly personal setting and I am so profoundly moved by your continued support. I am proud to announce that as part of the next step in my career I will be joining OnCallCare, a company that will allow me to provide the same care and support to other adjacent communities and neighborhoods. In an attempt to keep costs at a minimum and to maximize the services provided, I will no longer be able to accept insurance. Though it is required by OnCallCare that I not accept insurance, each patient will receive a bill so insurance companies can provide Ài LÕÀÃi i Ì v À Ì i Û Ã Ì° " > >Ài Ü > Ã > Ü i Ì i yiÝ L ÌÞ Ì iÝÌi ` Þ hours and focus more of my attention on the community’s needs. I can also assure you that the intimate service and personal touch you have all come to expect will still be present. Night and day I will still avail myself to every member of this community. I sincerely thank each and every one of you for every visit, every referral, every relationship. You have all truly become part of my extended family. I hope you continue with me on this next part of my professional journey.

Excitement in the air at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County Early Childhood Center Excitement was in the air at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County Early Childhood Center. As the yeladim prepared for the Chagim, they created beautiful Rosh Hashana cards for their families and walked them to the post office to mail them. Honey dishes, Simanim cards, Lulavim and Etrogim were just a few of the many projects that were designed by the children. All of the children had a great time in the ECC Sukkah enjoying treats and singing songs with our talented music teacher, Morah Kayli.

THE WEST HEMPSTEAD JEWISH JOURNAL STUMBLING BLOCKS & ADHD Continued from page 60… You can’t snap your finger and say, “Okay, if I breathe deeply, I am going to be fine.” It takes time and practice to learn this new path towards calm. After years and years of anxiety, the brain registers this as the ‘norm’ of behavior and makes it very challenging for someone to change their response of hyperventilating or shallow breathing. It’s difficult to turn-off one’s worries. OrganizeU4Life teaches our clients how to ‘rewire’ their brain. We do this by introducing a technique to increase awareness when one becomes distracted or anxious. (Often, when a person is focused on a task, they don’t sense their anxiety in that moment and therefore can sense the onset of an increase in anxiety.)
Awareness of ‘spacing out’, ‘being distracted’, and ‘becoming anxious’ is a method of helping our clients control their brains instead of their brains controlling them. The more you become aware, the more you begin to change the manner in which you respond to activities the more your brain will change with you. Learning new ways to respond to a situation creates a new path for the brain to follow. Responding with anxiety can eventually be changed to responding in a calm state. However, it takes lots of practice and clients need the proper medication for their individual needs. Only a licensed medical professional should recommend and prescribe the best medications for specific conditions. Although our mission is to teach skill sets, unless we help our clients reduce their distractions and anxiety, they won’t be able to focus or remember the new habits that will result in their success.
Most Adults with ADHD have compensated for their lack of organizing skill sets. However, we have been told by clients that the compensation only goes so far and eventually their lack of skills catch up with them. This explains why our lessons on ‘how to’ keep to a schedule is paramount to their progress. Although structure is very important for the person with ADHD, the unfortunate catch-22 is that the concept of a schedule, structure and routine equates to the word boredom. Not only do we encourage our clients to participate in the creation of their own schedule we highly recommend that they take their tasks/projects and break them down into small chunks with ample breaks. We call these breaks pauses, which in essence is taking a few deep cleansing breaths. This is all it takes for the brain to refresh itself and help to get back on track for increased focusing. We address the issue of how one is to find where they left off before the pause as losing one’s thought, or process is common. The many things that many of us take for granted are major challenges for our clients. One client called us to say that when she leaves work to go home, she takes a break and then she never gets back on schedule and her entire night can be wasted watching tv. Instead of telling her specifically what to do, we came up with two possibilities to let her decide the one that works best for her. One idea was for her to skip her break and to go straight to the library from work. The travel time then becomes her ‘break’, simply because of the change of scenery. The most important part of this plan was for our client to feel accomplished. By going to the Library and spending time on her college work makes her feel proud of herself. In addition, she feels satisfaction by completing a task on her schedule. We want our clients to fill their days with these moments. You might wonder why our client couldn’t think of this idea herself? It has to do with memory issues. People tell us that their minds go blank. They don’t know what to do next. They may not know what they were doing or how to begin a task. Then there are times that they procrastinate for irrational reasons. The ADHD brain has many complexities and therefore, the ADHD person needs guidance and ideas. These are the skill sets they are missing. Once learned, and the idea is implemented into their routine, they can continue to utilize these skill sets going forward. Another method to fight the boredom factor is schedule time for our clients to work on their creative brains. Many people with ADHD are very bright and are born with strengths in specific areas. Some are good artists, others can fly planes, and others can be stand-up comedians (think Jerry Seinfeld).

S tumbling Blocks & ADHD Continued From Page 62 We were recently called by a family whose daughter woke up one morning and decided she didn’t want to go to school anymore. She was in the 12th grade and when she went to school she was found playing with toys in the back of the class. The young woman, who we were told at the consultation was very bright, considers her education to be below her intelligence level, and yet she fails her exams. She might be gifted, but with a learning disability (if we accept ADHD as a learning disability), and therefore needs some essential lessons to break her boredom. People with ADHD can have a maturity lag time of 5-6 years. When we asked this client how old she felt, she quickly said, “12” and yet she was 17. We explained to her that leaving school a year early can be counter-productive to her growth in maturity. She insisted that she wanted to leave school regardless. She told us that what she wants to do in her future will require a higher education. People with ADHD tend to focus well on subjects/tasks/projects that are not ‘boring’ to them. However, one of the elements of school is that there are required classes that are not stimulating. The best way this young woman can move forward is with specific guidance on how to create a schedule that includes the necessary breaks to help her mind rest and reenergize. Part of the problem has been that she doesn’t know when to stop and as a result she goes into overload. This contributes to her sense of boredom. By breaking down her tasks, by guiding her with ‘how to’ study and take exams, and by teaching her proper breathing methods her sense of being bored will eventually be replaced with new ways to function. We teach our clients to replace their negative thinking with positive thinking. With proper lessons, practice and implementation a person with ADHD can and will achieve a brighter tomorrow. REINFORCING THE DAYS OF SUCCOS Rabbi Tzachi Diamond As we turn the corner from the Days of Awe of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and refocus towards the Days of Rejoicing of Sukkos, it seems as if we make a complete and total transformation of our mindset and the way to connect to Hashem - switching from a serious and heavy approach to a lively and excited one. How is it that in a fleeting moment we are propelled into a completely different way of being? Is it possible that the close and intimate relationship between us and Hashem is gone as soon as we make Havdalah following Yom Kippur? Obviously not. As Sukkos approaches, the main objective is to stay positive and happy (the Vilna Gaon is known to say that to remain happy for the duration of Sukkos is the single most difficult mitzvah one is faced with) but not to disregard the energy and effort put into the days and even weeks preceding it. The truth is that we need to ensure that we have a component of that mind frame, of being grounded, even while we are singing and dancing in our sukkah. Perhaps we can see this idea brought about from the esrog itself. Throughout the Midrashim, Gemaras and commentaries, there are many comparisons and connotations drawn to all of the four species of Sukkos. There is one that stands out as being little more unique than its counterparts. The Zohar tells us that the esrog corresponds to a king. We can add to this the Medrash which states that the esrog alludes to one’s heart. The connection between these two ideas is simple; we need to ensure that our hearts remain connected to The King, Hashem, even on Sukkos, during the time of Z’man Simchaseinu. I would like add one more aspect connected to what we’ve said here. The Imrei Noam brings down an interesting idea. He points out that when the Torah introduces us to the four species that make up the lulav, it does so in the order of esrog followed by lulav which is then followed by the hadassim and aravos (the latter two will be kept together as is alluded to in many places). When we see the same list brought in Mishnayos, it’s lulav, then the hadassim and aravos and last is the esrog. And, finally, when we look in seforim and the way we are used to talking about them, the order is lulav, esrog, hadassim and aravos. If we study the above concept, we can note an interesting idea. The lulav, which is one of the stronger species, never gets relegated to the last position. The hadassim and aravos, the quieter species, never take their place in front. Why then does the esrog find itself all over the place? Perhaps some spots should be off limits to it? However, if we tie all of what we’ve mentioned together, we will understand that this last idea makes perfect sense. The esrog relates to our heart as well as The King. There might be times and opportunities that someone might not be ready to connect in a certain way. We might think that our Elul, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur or even ten seconds ago wasn’t worthy of me standing before the King of the World, let alone with overflowing joy. How can I go from such seriousness to extreme joy or perhaps we were really longing for the Days of Awe to pass just so that we can enjoy the awesome days of Sukkos. The bottom line is the same; no matter who you are and where you find yourself, your truest and deepest connection to The King is in your heart, and it is always with you. May we all internalize this message and, when we get to Simchas Torah, may we dance WHOLEHEARTLY and sing “Se’oo sh’earim rasheichem u’se’oo pischei olam v’yavo Melech Hakavod” - raise up the gates of your heads and raise up your everlasting entrances so that The King of Glory may enter.

A Wonderful Start for CAHAL
Kindergarten in HANC
The CAHAL kindergarten class at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County has started the new school year with great success. With the support of our therapists and the HANC 6th graders who volunteer in our classroom each morning, the children are engaged in a full sensory integration program on a daily basis which complements their educational and social skills curricula. The children are so excited to be learning about Rosh Hashanah these past two weeks, getting ready in Chodesh Elul for this special holiday. They delighted in hearing Rabbi Yaakov Sadigh, our Principal, blow shofar every morning. The children gave an extra penny for tzedakah at davening to increase their mitzvot, and baked their own round challahs to put on their beautiful challah, apple and honey plates that they decorated. Integrating their social studies curriculum about community helpers with their yom tov preparations, the children made apple-shaped Shana Tova cards for their families which they decorated with red, green and yellow cellophane to look like the shiny apples that they are all ready to eat. They then had the privilege of a special visit from our local post office supervisors and mail carrier Greg who told them all about their important job to deliver the mail. The children brought their cards in envelopes that they addressed and stamped across the street from the school to the corner blue mailbox. There, the mail carrier helped them open the door to drop in their envelopes. But even better, he then opened the bottom door of the mailbox to show them where their cards went and how he will then take them out and deliver them to their homes in his big truck which he drove to school. The children were fascinated by the experience and thrilled that their Rosh Hashanah cards were going to be delivered to their loved ones. CAHAL, the local yeshiva-based and sponsored community program for children with learning challenges, is now in its 28th year, providing smaller, more individualized classes in 11 local yeshivas. All the students attend mainstream activities daily, including lunch, recess, specials, assemblies, trips and more. When ready, children attend academic classes as well, with support from CAHAL to ensure success. The experienced and caring CAHAL teachers make it all happen. For more information about the CAHAL program and to donate to this great community organization, contact CAHAL at cahal@cahal.org or call (516) 295-3666.

Under 5’ 10 Opens New Brooklyn Location After years of buying clothes that didn’t fit, (and looked only slightly better after tailoring) businessman Elie Robinson threw his last pair of expensive off-the-rack trousers in the bin and created a line of clothing that has taken the fashion world by storm. With the average height of American men being 5’ 10, there are millions of people (can we hear a cheer f rom the 40 million American men to be exact) that fall just below that mark. Once the jokes have worn off, Under 5’ 10 fills a gap in the market that large retailers have yet to, offering customers a wardrobe that doesn’t need tailoring and allows men to f eel confident in their clothing. With the idea in mind to make affordable and stylish clothing for shorter men, Robinson reached out to various friends in the industry to get their first shirt developed. ‘Our fit was based and perfected on hundreds of surveys and sizing charts in the industry and while we initially only focussed on one product, we now have an entire collection of jeans, chinos, dress pants, henleys, polos, and shoes.’ Rumour has it the brand also has jackets in the works. Teaming up with co-owners Jonathan Glaubach and Greg Grinman, this fashion-conscious trio opened their first store in Cedarhurst New York (and created a large online customer database across the United States) less than a year ago. If this wasn’t enough, Under 5’10 has recently brought their dapper styles to the streets of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. With plans for more store rollouts in Manhattan and other locations in the near future, Under 5’ 10 has no intention of slowing down, thus testimony to their ever-growing, loyal customer base. ‘The idea of clothing engineered specifically for men under 5’10 is a novel concept to men that have been looking for clothing that fits them’ says Grinman. And while one would think it’s mostly gents who walk into the stores, don’t discoun t their partners, ‘we get so many fashion-conscious partners coming into the stores and buying numerous items for the men in their lives. After that, it’s only a matter of time before they come back themselves’. Their secret to beating out their competition? ‘We try our best to maintain the approach that although we are in the specialty/ solution wear category, our prices don’t have to be prohibitive to the average customer’ says Glaubach’. Selfdescribed as the underdog with a fashion sense, Under 5’10 offers quality wear, with a made-to-measure fit that men are excited to bring on to their friends and extended social group. As more people understand the issues with their clothing, they will demand clothing that fits their bodies properly. In turn, they will become less likely to settle for a less-than-perfect product. While many men get sent pictures of the store as the butt of a joke in a group chat after the sting has worn off, clients come in to see what Under 5’10 is all about and keep returning; for good reason. Store Locations: 337 Albany Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11213 536 Central Avenue Cedarhurst, NY 11516
