FAROE ISLANDS

2 / Welcome to port of T贸rshavn

Greetings from the Harbour Master A new season is approaching and once again the harbour will be buzzing with life. Busy harbour workers mooring ships, enthusiastic tour operators ordering bus drivers around, and cruise ships filled with eager guests, waiting to come ashore. Moments like these, when everything comes together, drive us to do our very best every time a new ship—whether small or large—enters the harbour. This past season, we asked every cruise ship entering Tórshavn to evaluate the services provided by us. The result shows that we are doing quite a good job. We will continue to do our utmost to service you in such a way that your guests will be pleased.

Welcome to Tórshavn.

The Natural Choice

One of the world’s smallest capitals, Tórshavn is the gateway to the unique and unspoilt Faroe Islands. Tórshavn’s central location on the islands allows for easy access to even the most remote areas. In fact, Tórshavn is the access point to a network of 17 inhabited islands covering 1,399 sq km and edged by a bewilderingly rugged 1,100 km of coastline. With its key location, northwest of Scotland and more or less midway between Norway and Iceland, Tórshavn is a fascinating and welcoming destination perfectly placed to be a ’must see’ port of call on any North Atlantic and transatlantic itinerary. Each year the port hosts upwards of 50 cruise calls with more than 45,000 passengers and crew. Tórshavn is home to approximately 20,000 of the Faroe Islands’ 48,000 inhabitants, who also share the islands with some 75,000 sheep! The picturesque city is a political and cultural centre, which, more than 1,100 years ago, served as a meeting place and Thing site for ancient Vikings. What this community lacks in size, it more than makes up for in terms of character and charm. From the moment visitors glimpse the traditional grass roof houses, painted in an array of vibrant colours, they know they 4 / Welcome to port of Tórshavn

are in for a unique experience. Upon docking, passengers are within walking distance of the city centre. Tórshavn is a very safe destination, and is perfect for walks and for enjoying the unique atmosphere where tradition blends with internationally acclaimed, avant-garde art and design. When you enter our harbour, you will be met by experienced local shipping agents, who handle all relevant matters in a professional way. The Port of Tórshavn is the only Faroese port to be manned 24/7 throughout the year and has yet to experience a closedown due to bad weather.

Although Tórshavn may feature as a boutique port of call on your itinerary, you will discover that Tórshavn and its surrounding areas have a lot to offer and that your passengers have a pleasant stay, however short or long. The Faroe Islands is a small close-knit island community and Tórshavn is among the smallest capitals of the world, yet this is also our forte. Guests usually cherish the ease of travelling, the short distances to fascinating sights and the breathtaking scenery round every bend. From the moment they first perceive the islands in the distance, they are already immersed in the unbelievable experience of the Faroe Islands. In this unique and remote place, your customers will feel they have come to a haven, where they are welcomed with open arms and treated like valued guests.

As a capital, Tórshavn has several interesting museums, a great variety of modern and historical sights as well as quality shops, cafés and restaurants. The cosy city centre is inviting and tempts visitors to go for a stroll or shop for quirky handicraft and wonderful knitwear. Their experiences here will transform the perception of Tórshavn from a boutique port to a marquis port. The Information Office, conveniently located in the city centre, is where your passengers may find all the information and help they need, before seeing the rest of the town. The Information Office also carries souvenirs and handicraft, and takes care of tourists’ tax-free shopping refunds.
