HISTORY OF NIKE CORTEZ Onitsuka Tiger by Bill Bowerman

1966

• Created by the co-founder of Nike, this design was pro duced with the help of Japanese footwear company Onitsuka Tiger. It’s foam midsole and herringbone-pat terned outsole attracted athletes and it became the best-selling runner shoe of the year.

1967-68

TG-24 “MEXICO” and “CORTEZ”

• Shoe name was changed to the “Mexico”. The 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico inspired this change. • Plans of changing the name to the “Aztec” drew legal attention from Adidas because of their “Azteca Gold” • Name changed to “Cortez” inspired by conquistador Hernan Cortez, succeeded as a casual running shoe

Onitsuka Tiger changed to Nike Inc.

1971

• Company name changed to Nike Inc., inspired by the Greek Goddess of Victory • Introduced the “Nike Cortez”

Nike Cortez in Leather and Nylon

• Nike secures first pro athlete endorsement with Olympic runner, Steve Prefontaine • Famous swoosh is introduced to shoe designs • Leather version was heavier, compared to the nylon version created to produce “The world’s lightest running shoe.”

1976- Charlie’s Angels • The women’s version of the Cortez was given the name, Senorita Cortez. It became popu lar when it was worn by actress Farah Fawcett in an episode of the popular series, Charlie’s Angels.

2010- Year of the Tiger • Special edition version of shoe created inspired by the Chinese Horoscope year of the tiger with an embroidered date on the tongue and white nylon

1987- West Coast • The Cortez became a favorite for break dancers in New York City. Along with break dancers, the shoe also became popular amongst gangster rap representing, gang affiliation with different colors.

2012- 40th Anniversary • Nike creates a wide variety of color com binations for the Cortez to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the “perfectly nostalgic sneaker for the streets”

1994- Forrest Gump • Nike used product placement in the media when they presented the Nike Cortez in the 1994 movie, Forrest Gump. Forrest describing the shoes as “the best gift anyone could ever get me!”

2017- Compton • Design included Chicano-style lettering on the heels to embrace the “1980s simplicity yet bold design”

1998- Seinfeld • The Cortez was a staple in the hit 90’s show, Seinfeld. The shoe was part of George Constanza’s character uniform.

2017- Kendrick Lamar Collaboration • Rapper Kendrick Lamar collaborates with Nike to create a Cortez with the words, “Don’t trip” to pay an homage to his hometown Compton,CA.
