What causes car sickness in children and how can I prevent it?
Car sickness is a type of motion sickness. Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting information from the inner ears, eyes, and nerves in the joints and muscles.
Imagine a young child sitting low in the back seat of a car without being able to see out the window — or an older child reading a book in the car. The child's inner ear will sense motion, but his or her eyes and body won't. The result might be an upset stomach, cold sweat, fatigue, loss of appetite or vomiting.
It's not clear why car sickness affects some children more than others. While the problem doesn't seem to affect most infants and toddlers, children ages 2 to 12 are particularly susceptible.
To prevent car sickness in children, you might try the following strategies:
• Reduce sensory input. Encourage your child to look at things outside the car rather than focusing on books, games or screens. If your child naps, traveling during nap time might help.
• Carefully plan pre-trip meals. Don't give your child a large meal immediately before or during car travel. If the trip will be long or your child needs to eat, give him or her a small, bland snack — such as dry crackers and a small drink — before it's time to go.
• Provide air ventilation. Adequate air ventilation might help prevent car sickness.
• Offer distractions. If your child is prone to car sickness, try distracting him or her during car trips by talking, listening to music or singing songs.
• Use medication. If you're planning a
car trip, ask your child's doctor about using an over-the-counter antihistamine to prevent car sickness. Both medications work best if taken about an hour before traveling. Read the product label carefully to determine the correct dose and be prepared for possible side effects, such as drowsiness. Nondrowsy antihistamines don't appear to be effective at treating motion sickness.
If your child starts to develop car sickness, stop the car as soon as possible and let your child get out and walk around or lie on his or her back for a few minutes with closed eyes. Placing a cool cloth on your child's forehead also might help.
If these tips don't help or if your child's car sickness makes travel difficult, talk to your child's doctor about other options.

Difference in Diagnosing
The diagnostic criteria for autism don't discriminate between boys and girls or between men and women. But recent research suggests that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may look quite different in girls—so different, in fact, that it can be difficult to diagnose.
One researcher at the Kennedy Krieger Interactive Autism Network raised this question in a report on girls with ASD: "Researchers looking at differences between boys and girls with ASD have often not found much difference. Is this because there is no difference, or because only girls with ASD who most resemble boys with ASD are diagnosed and therefore included in studies?"
One difficulty that researchers experience is that girls with autism seem to behave in ways that are considered acceptable—if not ideal—for girls as opposed to boys. For example, girls with autism may appear to be passive, withdrawn, dependent on others, uninvolved, or even depressed (just as boys do). They may become passionately and even obsessively interested in very specific areas (just as boys do), but they may not gravitate toward
the "geeky" areas of technology or math. Sadly, in Western culture, girls who exhibit these behaviors are more likely to be ignored or bullied than diagnosed and treated.
With all those caveats, however, research is moving forward and providing us with more clues to ASD in girls. Based on recent research, here are a few of the ways in which girls with autism appear to differ from boys with autism: Boys with autism tend to have very repetitive and limited areas of play. Girls with autism are less repetitive and have broader areas of play.
Girls with autism are more likely than boys to be able to respond to non-verbal communication such as pointing or gaze following. They are also somewhat more focused and less prone to distraction.

While boys' social communication issues become challenging very early in their lives, girls may be able to manage the social demands of early childhood but run into difficulties as they enter early adolescence.

Girls with autism are less likely to behave aggressively and more likely to be passive or withdrawn. It is fairly common for girls with autism to appear socially competent as youngsters because they are "taken under the wings" of other girls who enjoy mentoring their peers. These mentors often fade out of the picture as they enter adolescence and find other interests or groups of friends.
According to the Kennedy Krieger report, Boys with ASD may tend to engage in disruptive behavior to gain objects, while girls with ASD may tend to engage in disruptive behavior to get attention.
Girls with autism are more likely than boys to also suffer from anxiety and/or depression.
While girls with autism do have perseverative interests, they are more likely to choose interests (such as TV stars or music) that appear more typical than, for example, many boys' perseverative interests in schedules, statistics, or

SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Now that many of us can work from home we have our kids around this summer. So, how do you keep them entertained and not in front of the TV or on their electronics. So, I thought back to some activities we did during the summer with my kids and now my grandchildren.
Here are a few of our favorites:
Chalk Paint Sidewalks
Drawing with chalk on the porch and sidewalks is a fun activity for kids. They have this wonderful area to use their imagination and use chalk or foam paint to decorate the porch or sidewalks. And, it washes off easily so they can draw another day.
Paint Rocks
You can take your kids to a local park in your area to collect a few rocks. And, later on, put an art station either in your kitchen or on your back patio for them to paint rocks into different characters and animals like a ladybug, Scooby-Doo, etc. They can also paint rocks and share with family members who may have a garden they can be displayed in. (I still have some rocks on my front flower beds that my daughter painted over 15 years ago.)
Learn to Cook
Summers are the perfect time to pass on your family recipes to your kids. You can appoint your kid as your assistant chef and let them help you in the kitchen for the whole summer holidays. This activity can help to develop culinary skills among your kids. And we always feature fun cooking and snake making in Exceptional Kids.
Visit your Local Nursery
There is nothing like watching plants grown and summer is a great time to introduce your children to plants. Take them to a local nursery in your area and show them different types of flowers. Herbs and vegetables are also great items to have in a garden. If you don’t have room for a lot of plants let your kids grow plants from seeds.

Cracker Barrel Pancakes
Cracker Barrel Pancakes are the best homemade pancakes. We love that it only requires a few ingredients, and we can easily make this copycat recipe at home.
PREP TIME: 5 MINS
COOK TIME: 4 MINS
TOTAL TIME: 9 MINS
SERVINGS: 4
CALORIES: 330
INGREDIENTS
• 2 cups All Purpose Flour Measured with a spoon, not sifted
• 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
• 1 tsp Salt
• 2 Tablespoons Granulated Sugar
• 2 Large Eggs
• 2 cups Low Fat Buttermilk 1% or Less
• Butter for cooking
INSTRUCTIONS
• In a medium size bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and eggs. Then stir in the flour, baking soda, salt and sugar. Mix until just combined.
• Preheat a griddle, cast iron skillet or non stick skillet over medium high heat. Grease with butter.
• Add the batter to the pan in approximately ½ cup scoops. Spread the batter out into a circle.
• Cook for 2-3 minutes until small bubbles start to appear at the top of the pancake. Flip the
