Jack and Imogene Ehle
Jack and Imogene Ehle have found a new “family”. Between the two of them they have eight children, but their Riverside Terrace “family” is made up of fellow residents who help care for each other. “I don’t say nice things about living here just to butter people up, I really believe this is a wonderful place,” quips Imogene.
The couple has lived here since 2013 and has met lots of nice people. The staff says Jack and Imogene keep the residents laughing with their quick senses of humor. They also love the helpful staff, dining together, and their opportunity to have a voice in what happens there. “Moving here was our kid’s idea, but they made a good decision for us.”

Message from the Rock County Council on Aging At the Rock County Council on Aging, we believe that older Americans are a special resource. To be honored. To be recognized for their value to the community. Our mission is to help preserve the independence, self-worth and dignity of older residents of Rock County. The Rock County Council on Aging is committed to addressing issues of health, nutrition, transportation, information and assistance, benefits counseling, caregiving, independent living, preventative health, elder abuse, and social needs. The benefit specialist helps older persons who are having a problem with their private or government benefits. Benefit specialists are often called “red tape cutters” because they are experts in helping with the complicated paperwork that is often required in benefit programs. Benefit specialists help with Medicare, Medicare Supplemental Insurance, Medicare Part D, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security, Homestead Tax Credit, Food Stamps, Veteran’s Administration Benefits and much more. Call 757 5414. The Rock County Golden Diners program offers hot, healthy, nutritionally balanced meals. The meals are designed by a registered dietitian to meet one third of the recommended dietary allowance. Participants are asked to contribute toward the cost of the meal. But there’s more to the story than just a well-balanced meal. At the Golden Diners sites, friendship and fun are always included on the daily menu. To make reservations, call at least one day ahead, before 11:30 a.m., to 757-5474.
Weekday meals are delivered to those who are homebound and unable to cook for themselves. Our Home Delivered Meals recipients, many of whom are frail and alone, appreciate the daily human contact they receive when the driver delivers their meal. For information on Home Delivered Meals, call 757-5474. Rock County Specialized Transit responds to the transportation needs of Rock County residents who are age fifty-five and older, or are disabled. Vans, which are lift equipped, are used to provide door to door service to all areas within Rock County, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 757-5054 to schedule a ride. The National Family Caregiver Support Program is designed for family caregivers to give them information and assistance with their caregiving duties and a grant for temporary respite. For more information, call 758-8455. The Council on Aging also offers several evidencebased programs to improve health and provide a better quality of life. They include Powerful Tools for Caregiving, Living Well with Chronic Conditions, Stepping On (a falls prevention program), and Healthy Eating for Successful Living. What to Know About Estate Sales By Melissa Hubbard
T
here are four D’s when it comes to estate sales: debt, divorce, downsizing, and death. Downsizing to assisted living facilities and/or death seem to be the two most common. What do you do with a parent’s possessions, when you have taken everything you want? When Nicole’s mother died in December, at age 87, she left behind a ranch-style home, with a basement and a three car garage, FULL of her life’s possessions. She had lived there for more than eighty years. Nicole and her brother decided which items they wanted to keep because of sentimental reasons; but didn’t know what to do with the rest of the “stuff” that no one in the family wanted. We’re talking about the china set, the living room furniture, the silver, the knick knacks, the bathroom stuff, kitchen appliances, etc. Do you know what to do in this situation? The first thing to know is, DON’T THROW ANYTHING AWAY! The second thing to do is call S&H Estate Sales & Service, LLC. 608-957-7027 Melissa Hubbard, the owner of S&H, will come in and do a free 30-minute assessment of what needs to be liquidated to find out if it’s something that will work for the client and the company. After the decision is made to hire S&H, you will sign a contract and then can walk away. The next thing you 22 | Helping Hands Resource Guide for Rock County
know, you get a check in the mail and you’re done. S&H will come in and organize all of your possessions throughout the home on tables they provide. They price everything individually with their knowledge and experience in the industry at fair market value. Wikipedia defines fair market value (FMV) as “an estimate of the market value of an item based on what a knowledgeable, willing, and unpressured buyer would probably pay to a knowledgeable, willing, and unpressured seller. An estimate of fair market value may be founded either on precedent or extrapolation. Fair market value differs from the intrinsic value that an individual may place on the same asset based on their own preferences and circumstances”; in other words if it’s sentimental. S&H runs a sale (1-3 days, depending on the size of the estate) in which customers walk through the house and buy items at a cashier’s station, just like they would at a department store. S&H does the marketing, advertising,
and places signs all over town to get people to your sale, as well has hiring staff to help with it all. They do all of the billing afterwards and write you a check when it’s over. During the contract signing you have three options of what to do with the leftover items after the sale. The best option is to let S&H clear out the house so it’s ready to be sold, or for new owners to move in. Just think about the time that you don’t have to spend doing all of these things or worrying about it! Founded in 2015, S&H Estate Sales and Service, LLC is a licensed estate sale business with insurance. Taxes are taken on the day of the sale, which is required by state law. There are no upfront costs to the client. S&H makes money based on a commission from the sale, or a minimum depending on which is greater. S&H’s mission is to provide an estate sale service to those in need during difficult times. If you find yourself needing an estate sale company, please do not hesitate to call S&H Estate Sales & Service, LLC today!! We are here to serve you!

to an acute hospital stay. ▪ You must need skilled nursing or skilled rehabilitative services on a daily basis, and must be complex enough that services must be performed by or under the supervision of professional or technical personnel. ▪ You must have had a three night qualifying stay in an acute care setting in the past 30 days. Many commercial insurances also offer a short-term rehab benefit, which would need to be verified by the hospital prior to an admission. Patients may also pay privately, and would need to contact their local hospital on price. How long can I stay in a short-term rehab program? Generally, you can stay in this program as long as you are making measurable progress as determined by rehabilitation services, nursing, and the physician. You could be in the program for as little as three days, or up to 100 days. After you have reached your goals, Medicare will no longer fund your stay in a short-term rehab program. It is very important to check with the facility of your choice to inquire about how their program is run. If the hospital where I recently stayed doesn’t have short-term rehab, am I out of luck?
No! You will want to ask your discharge planner, case manager or social worker to help you find a local hospital that offers this program in your area. When it comes to your health and what is right for you, be proactive and don’t be afraid to ask! Want to learn more? Advanced Care Planning
The time to start is now
I
f you ended up on life support in the intensive care unit, would your loved ones or doctors know what kind of health care you wanted? If you had advance directives in place, they would. An advance directive is a legal document that spells out your health care treatment goals and preferences in case you become incapacitated and are unable to speak for yourself or make your own decisions. It’s your chance to ensure sure your health care preferences are honored. In Wisconsin, you can complete a Power of Attorney for Health Care or a Wisconsin Living Will (Declaration to Physicians). In Illinois, you can complete an Illinois Statutory Short Form Power of Attorney for Health Care or a Living Will Declaration Form.
Completing your advance directives is one important part of advance care planning that includes:
▪ Choosing and completing an advance directive document. ▪ Choosing a health care agent (the person who will make health care decisions for you when you can’t make them for yourself). ▪ Discussing your plans with family and/or loved ones. Planning is best initiated with a trusted health care provider or someone skilled and trained to facilitate a conversation that allows for questions, reflection and 28 | Helping Hands Resource Guide for Rock County
comprehension. All adults aged 18 and up should consider advance care planning and complete advance directive documents. When you complete your advance care planning and share details with your family and doctors, it relieves any guesswork on their part. You take the burden off your loved ones, and help them feel prepared. That kind of peace of mind is a priceless gift you can give them now.
How to get started
Schedule an appointment for a free basic health care planning
talk with Mercy Health System’s certified advance care planning facilitators. They will help you: ▪ Understand your future health care options ▪ Decide what “quality of life” means to you ▪ Decide how to choose a health care agent ▪ Read through and complete advance directive documents ▪ Know who to give document copies to ▪ Talk to your loved ones about your wishes ▪ And much more To make an appointment, call (608) 756-8248. Two abnormal structures called plaques and tangles are prime suspects in damaging and killing nerve cells in the brain causing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Most experts believe they somehow play a critical role in blocking communication among nerve cells and disrupting processes that cells need to survive.
