harvest festivals, apple picking, and, of course, Halloween. There’s much to look forward to this month, but it’s also a time of change. September’s brilliant foliage turns brown, falling to the ground and leaving the trees bare. After wearing short sleeves at the beginning of the month, we often find ourselves scraping ice from our windshields by its end. This October also brings changes to my family. After living away from home for the last five years, Madelaine, our grown-up daughter, is living with my husband and me again. It’s been a difficult transition at times. We’re all different people than we were when she left for college in fall 2016. Learning to regard one another as adults and respect each other’s space has frequently been a challenge. But there has been joy as well. Having the opportunity to sit with Madelaine in the evenings, when she comes home from her job at an educational nonprofit, and talk with her about her day often makes the domestic challenges we’ve been facing seem trivial. I couldn’t be more proud or feel more satisfied as a parent, knowing the hard work we invested in raising her has resulted in a talented, passionate adult who is working toward making the world a better place. I’m also reminded that growth is the ultimate outcome of many of the challenges we successfully tackle. (As my mother used to say, “A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.”) And whether it’s getting vaccinated for COVID-19 or cleaning out a closet to make space for someone else’s things, our efforts to take care of one another and ourselves often pay off in ways we never imagined.
