Deposito Legal MA-226-2007 In my area of work I get to meet many different people from many walks of life. Almost everyone has a story to tell, where they came from, their background or their experiences, which have in turn led them to arrive on the Costa del Sol. While the Costa del Sol is still a popular favourite when it comes to retirement plans, it is still a number one holiday destination for millions of people from all over Europe and beyond. It is estimated that over 81 million people visited Spain last year which makes it the second most visited country in Europe, only to be narrowly beaten by France. This is an increase of over 20 million international visitors since 2014.

So it seems that there are no shortage of international visitors coming to Spain, so where do they go, what do they do and how do they invest in their annual holiday? From a business point of view, the tourist of today does not spend any less, but there has been a shift in how they spend. With the highly competitive and over saturated bar / restaurant market, today’s tourist will take time to look for quality to make their euro count. The tourist and the semi-resident expat will now choose quality and service over quantity and price. The experience it seems has now overtaken the cheap and basic. This is good news for all the small businesses that are firmly established, that work hard,

they care, they provide a quality service and are reluctant to follow cheap trends. I would personally return every time to a place that has provided me with a satisfactory product, a great service or a nice experience. This resilience and determination is an admirable quality, not only amongst the hospitality sector, but with all the small expat businesses here in Málaga. We love to bring those businesses directly to the tourists, the expat communities and the international and English speaking communities throughout the Costa del Sol. With our own original alternative entertainment and business index, we, at Sentinella HQ, continually make recommendations to tourists, new comers and permanent residents so that our readers can enjoy the best of what the Costa del Sol has to offer… Keep up the good work! Enjoy the October moons and have a spooky Halloween! JJ the Ed

Giant vegetable whisperer strokes his leeks to help them grow
A gardener says the secret to growing his giant vegetables is stroking them. Vegetable whisperer Chris Evans, 21, says he is ‘obsessed’ with growing giant leeks, onions and tomatoes. The young gardener, who is a full-time carer to his sick parents, has had a lifelong passion for his allotment in Wednesbury, West Midlands – but he won’t eat any of the produce he grows. He’s won awards for his giant veg – setting the British record for a supersize tomato at 6lb 2oz – has also grown giant onions, leeks and marrows. ‘It’s amazing at the end of the day what a vegetable can grow to in size, at the moment there is no limit – reach the sky as they say,’ he said. Man ‘rubbed fruit on his bare bottom at supermarket and put it back on display’ Chris spends a lot of his free time growing the prize winners, saying it gives him the peace and quiet that he needs. And in order to get them to prize-winning size, Chris has a successful hack – stroking his veg to encourage it. ‘I stroke the leek leaves because when they go stiff they’ll grow up this high and it’ll just snap over,’ he said. ‘It’s a technique more than anything else but it’s a technique of making the leaves look presentable.’ Chris added: ‘I don’t like eating leeks or onions, I grow them but I don’t like eating them.’ Chris’s Top TIps 1. Use peet based compost ‘Quality not recycled rubbish because if people have used weed killer and put it in the green bin – you’ll get it and you wont grow your stuff.’ 2. Always use seed from the best source possible 3. Look after them and nurture them and give them the tender care like you would with anything else.

The Feria del Rosario - Fuengirola
On the 6th October 2018, the Feria del Rosario in Fuengirola will start and last all week. It is a lively and traditional Spanish fair with one of the biggest horse fairs on the Costa del Sol and plenty of ladies in flamenco attire. The official opening is on the evening of the 6th at the Palacio de la Paz but most people head to the fairground which attracts a large crowd. The fairground is located where the market usually is between Fuengirola and Los Boliches and entrance is totally free. As with many traditional ferias in Spain there are various “casetas serving food and drink and providing lots of entertainment, quite often lots of traditional flamenco but each tent is different. Here you can experience
real Spanish culture for genuine Spanish people. There is also the fairground itself with lots of rides and amusements and children’s entertainment, roller coasters etc. THe feria is also known locally to be one of the largest horse fairs in the area. Many people arrive on horses or horse drawn carriages. You can witness many horses tied up at various bars on route!

Halloween Party Anyone?
Halloween : a good excuse to get dressed up in your scariest costume and goulish face make up. If you are here in the Costa del Sol, there is always plenty going on to celebrate as the Spanish usually observe a three day celebration of Halloween, Dia de Todos los Santos and Dia de Muertos. Every year here in Spain, Halloween is more and more popular, with many events taking place in bars, schools and cities and towns. Expect dressing up parites, themed events in many different nightspots. One reason why Halloween has become so popular is that the day after is All Saints Day which is a public holiday and so the Halloween night is treated like a Saturday night, so many people take advantage of the fact that they do not have to go to work the next day. Of course, Halloween is closely associated with another event in the Spanish speaking world, Mexico’s “Dia de Muertos”. In Spain, it is not celebrated to the same extent as in Mexico but many Spaniards go to the cemetary in order to commemorate dead relatives. Also, Dia de Todos Santos is a family day of high religious

significance in Spain. Remember the shops are closed on the 1st of November. Events : Trick or Treating in La Cala Centre (every year children go to the main strip as the bars, restaurants and shops stock up with sweets) Our Bar are having a Halloween night on Saturday 3rd November from 9pm. La Concepcion Botanical Gardens are also hosting a night of terror on the 31st October, it starts at 8pm. Tivoli World are also organising a mansion of terror between the 1st October and 1st November those who get dressed up enter for free.

Extreme Weather Patterns
Around the world, ever more of us seem to be experiencing freak storms, floods and droughts — from catastrophes that devastate whole regions, to local heat waves and floods that leave us thinking: Surely it didn’t used to be like this? Since the early 1990s, scientists have been able to clearly show a rise in the average global temperature due to human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. With the Earth getting hotter, heat waves become more intense and more frequent. High temperatures evaporate more water, so average global rainfall increases too. With more energy and water vapor in the system, circulation patterns change how weather systems develop, causing severe storms in some regions and drought in others. Pinning the blame for any given extreme weather event has long been controversial. Yet scientists are getting closer to establishing the link. Some would argue that older weather data records may be low in yield due to how the data was collected. The technology we have
9
today did not exist in the past to analyse and record weather patterns. Many early disasters would not have been recorded, and details have been lost. For instance, vast areas of building developments that historically never existed on natural flood lands are increasingly growing all over the UK. Insurance companies say that there is significant increase in the number of claims of climate related events, whereas there are no changes in the number of claims which are related to geophysical things. So even if we suspect that this increase in extreme weather is a natural “planet cycle”, most scientists now believe it’s pretty obvious that the trend of extreme events are happening more frequently as greenhouse gas emissions accumulate in our atmosphere.

This Months Extreme Survival Story - The Robertson Family
For 38 days, the Robertson family was lost at sea. Patriarch Dougal Robertson, a British dairy farmer, just wanted to take his family on a boat trip for the “university of life, as his son called it. On January 27, 1971, Dougal, his wife, and their four children set out on a wooden schooner called the Lucette, heading to parts unknown. Douglas, the eldest son, said that his father had made few preparations for the trip, though he had been in the British merchant navy. For 17 months at sea, the family faired well, sailing from port-to-port and seeing the world. But on June 15, 1972, the family encountered a group of killer whales off the coast of the Galapagos Islands. The whales attacked the boat, splintering it and severely damaging it. The ship was taking in water. All they had was a lifeboat and a small dinghy, and just six days worth of food. They survived on rainwater and hunted
turtles, adrift at sea, hoping to ride Pacific currents to the middle of the ocean, which would then push them toward the Americas. After 16 days, the raft was no longer usable, so the family their one inexperienced crew member fled to a dinghy. It was a 10 foot boat far over capacity, but they managed to cling on until they were discovered by Japanese fishermen on July 23, 1972

3 Food Facts to Blow your Mind !! Potatoes can absorb and reflect Wi-fi signals. When Boeing wanted to test out their wireless signal on new planes in 2012, they placed giant piles of potatoes on seats. Because of their high water content and chemical makeup, potatoes absorb and reflect radio and wireless signals just like humans do. Every banana you eat is a clone. Even though there are 1,000 varieties of bananas all over the world, the common yellow fruits you see in the supermarket are all genetic clones of the Cavendish variety. The Cavendish was mass-produced, according to the Economist, because it does not have seeds — a desirable trait for consumers — and it survives longer than its banana cousins. Since the Cavendish does not have any seeds, it must be cloned by farmers in order to continue production. Recently, agricultural scientists have been worried that the lack of genetic diversity could soon leave the banana vulnerable to threats and extinction. Fruit snacks and cars are coated in the same type of wax.
Did you ever wonder how gummy candies get that glossy sheen? They’re coated with carnauba wax, the same stuff that is used on cars to make them shiny.

Bonus points that blending will bring out pumpkin seeds oil (great for gorgeous hair and skin!). This will result in a delicious seed butter that goes well topped on toast and oatmeal or used as a dip for fruit snacks such as dates and banana chips. 3. Plant based omega 3 fatty acids For vegans, getting a good dose of omega 3’s can be a bit challenging when omega 3- rich foods, such as seafood, is out of the question. However, pumpkin seeds are rich in plant based omega-3 fatty acids suitable for vegans and non- vegans alike. Omega 3 fatty acids are great for a wide spectrum of health benefits such as promoting healthier and shinier hair, lowering LDL cholesterol while raising HDL cholesterol (the good kind), and upping memory and overall brain function. 4. Improves sleep quality
Getting good quality sleep is essential for everyone’s health. Chronically poor sleeping patterns are closely linked to inflammation, weight gain and even accelerated aging. In a world full of stimuli, it makes it hard to sleep, let alone achieve deep restful sleep. This is where pumpkin seeds can help as these little wonders contain tryptophan, an amino acid helps to promote sleep and improve its overall quality. Try having pumpkin seeds before bed to sleep more soundly.

Good News For IBI Payments In Some Town Halls The time of year is approaching when in most municipalities, homeowners are required to pay the IBI local tax. There are certain tax reliefs in certain Town Halls, which may favour the taxpayer to a lesser or greater extent. We will review the most important Town Councils in the province of Malaga, and thus know which bonuses are applicable in each case. In the municipalities of Marbella and Torrox, there is no bonus at all. In Fuengirola, there is an IBI bonus. To be able to enjoy it, you must be registered at the Town Hall (empadronamiento) as having lived in the town in the previous fiscal year. So to enjoy this bonus in 2018, you must have been registered in Fuengirola by 31st December 2017 at the latest. The landlord must not be in debt to the City Council. If these requirements are met, a reduction of 30% on the annual amount will be applied. If the taxpayer is also a pensioner, a further 15% discount is added. In addition, if you are a large family, the discount will be 50% of the remaining annual total. In Mijas Town Council, just by direct debiting the IBI receipt from the bank, you get a 5% discount. It should be noted that this municipality has made a general reduction this year of 5% over the previous year. With regard to the IBI of VĂŠlez-MĂĄlaga, the regulations on this type of subsidy for 2018 have not yet been approved. We hope that in the coming weeks, the City Council will decide on these bonuses. In Malaga City Council, pensioners, unemployed persons, persons under 30 years old, separated or divorced persons with minor dependent children, widows or widowers with minor dependent children, single parents with minor dependent children, persons with disabilities or with dependent disabled relatives, holders of significant invalidity or recognised dependency pensions, parents of minors under one year old and victims of gender-based violence are entitled to a 50% discount on their IBI bill. These applications must be submitted before 1st March of each year. In addition, in order
to receive this aid, you must be registered as living in Malaga (empadronamiento), have your IBI receipt direct debited, have no other property owned in the city of Malaga and finally have no debts to the Malaga City Council. Tips and Tricks to get the Best out of your Hair Q Is It True That Your Hair Gets Used To Shampoo? Should I Change Mine Up Every Few Months? Hair doesn’t get used to shampoo. It’s more that your hair needs might have changed over time. If it’s been chemically treated, you might now need a different formula, and if your hair becomes oily, try swapping to a lighter shampoo and look for lifestyle reasons as to why it’s changed. Q What’s The Best Way To Maintain My Salon Colour? If you want the vibrancy of your colour to last longer, shampoo your hair with a colour-protecting formula using warm water, then rinse out your conditioner with cold water. The warm water helps expand the hair cuticle, which allows the colour-protecting agents to get in, and when you rinse with cool water, it snaps the cuticle shut and keeps the colour inside. Q I’m Trying To Grow My Hair Longer. Do I Really Need To Trim Split Ends?
Once your hair develops split ends, it must be cut because, even if your hair is growing, it will keep breaking off in the same spot. You’ll see your roots coming out from the top but you won’t notice your hair getting longer because it’s too weak to support the weight of its own length. Q What Matters Most When It Comes To Buying A Hair Dryer - Heat Or Power? A lot of people think a hair dryer needs to get hotter in order to dry your hair faster, but it’s not about the heat - heat is what sets the hair, but the pressure is what dries it. Make sure you buy a model that’s high-powered and invest in a good one. A top-quality dryer could last you anywhere from 10 years to the rest of your life.

5 Food Fallacies Here are five common food fallacies to avoid if you want long-term success. Myth: Skipping breakfast helps you lose weight. Reality: At first, this might seem like an easy way to cut down on calories. But skipping the important first meal of the day can backfire. Instead of helping you lose weight, missing out on breakfast may promote weight gain. A recent study of students in Greece found that skipping breakfast can contribute to an overall unhealthy lifestyle and a higher body mass index. Myth: You have to starve yourself to lose weight. Reality: This is another myth that can have a boomerang effect. Depriving yourself of needed calories may leave you feeling so hungry that you end up overeating and gorging on unhealthy foods. Healthy snacks can help you eat less overall and feel more satisfied. Eating regular, small, balanced meals and snacks gives your body a steady supply
of calories to keep up your metabolism and keep you from overindulging because you get too hungry. Myth: Energy bars help you lose weight and boost stamina. Reality: Many energy bars are packed with more than the protein they advertise-they also carry high amounts of unwanted sugar, salt, and even fat. Choosing a healthy meal replacement bar or another protein-rich snack may help you cut down on calories,

but you have to choose carefully after reviewing the nutritional information on the label. Myth: Drinks don't contribute to weight gain. Reality: You might be surprised to learn how many calories you take in each day through beverages. Sipping on a coffee with sugar, syrup, creamer, or a dash of whipped cream can add hundreds of calories to your daily diet. Soda, alcoholic drinks, and even juice all contain a lot of calories that can add up to extra pounds. Your best bets are water, the essential fluid for your body that's also zero calories, and fat-free milk that's low in calories and high in nutrients. Myth: All fat is bad. Reality: The term good fat may seem like an oxymoron, but your body needs some fat for fuel and to help cells function properly. Weight gain occurs when you eat too much fat. Also, eating the wrong types of fat-trans fats and saturated fats-pose health risks because they can raise cholesterol,
clog your arteries, and increase your risk for heart disease. Healthy, unsaturated fats can actually help improve heart health. You can find healthy fats in fatty fish such as salmon, avocados, nuts, and olive oil. Losing weight really isn't a mystery. Focus on a balanced eating plan, stay satisfied with nutritious food while limiting portion sizes, and get regular exercise.

Director : Bradley Cooper Release Date : from 11th October Stars : Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Sam Elliott, Anthony Ramos. The latest version of A Star Is Born, directed by and starring Bradley Cooper alongside Stefani Germanotta (a.k.a. Lady Gaga), is now the fourth movie to bear both the title and a plot arc about one star rising while another dims.
They marry just as the industry is beginning to take note of her. Though they mutually support one another, his love for her can’t overcome his own depression. The celebrity on which he’s coasted won’t save him forever. And meanwhile, he’s dragging down the woman he loves.
The concept remains the same: A man who’s seen it all in show business and who’s been driven to addiction by its hollowness encounters a talented, refreshingly authentic woman and falls in love with her almost on sight, then introduces her to the business he’s already conquered.
His Star Is Born follows the same contours as earlier versions, but feels anchored in 2018, particularly because the extra-cinematic work of his leading lady — unapologetic pop provocateur Lady Gaga — lends extra meaning to the film.

5 Shocking Reasons Why You Should Think Twice Before Eating Sugar
1. It causes heart disease Studies have shown that large amounts of added sugars reduce high-density lipoprotein levels and raise triglyceride levels. It is important to note that these two factors are fundamental to the onset of heart disease. 2. It causes erectile dysfunction Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or maintain an erection firm enough for sex. And it is common in men who have diabetes, especially those with type 2 diabetes. It can stem from damage to nerves and blood vessels caused by poor long-term blood sugar control. 3. It causes cancer Statistics have it that cancer is fast becoming one of the leading causes of death around the world. And it is characterized by uncontrolled growth and multiplication of cells. However, insulin has been shown to be one of the key hormones in regulating this sort of growth. Owing to this, scientists and researchers are beginning to conclude that having a constantly
elevated insulin level (a consequence of sugar consumption) can contribute to cancer. 4. It is bad for the teeth Studies have shown that the longer you eat sugary foods or sip sugary drinks the more the chances of plaque bacteria to use the sugar to produce acids that attack your enamel, the hard surface of your tooth. Cavities are a bacterial infection created by acids that cause your teeth to experience a hole in them. 5. It overloads and damages your liver The effects of too much sugar and that of alcohol are similar in nature. All the fructose you eat gets shuttled to the only organ that has the transporter which is your liver. And as result, the liver is severely taxed and overloaded, thus leading to potential liver damage.

What is Magnet Fishing ?
Magnet fishing may be a mystery term to many but the hobby has been growing rapidly in the UK and the US over recent years. Best of all you need almost zero technical knowledge to get started as the only equipment you need is a powerful magnet with a loop or eye attached to it, a decent length of strong rope, a pair of gloves and a large bucket to put all the metallic objects you dredge up. The term ‘fishing’ is something of a misnomer too as no one is out to catch fish and the excitement lies in what type of objects are found from trawling the murky depths of waterways, from rusting old shopping trolleys, historic relics and kitchen gadgets to discarded guns. Last year a seven-year-old Gloucestershire boy was allowed to detonate a WW2 hand grenade under controlled conditions after finding it while magnet fishing in the River Severn with his dad. And canals are often a favourite place to magnet fish thanks to the huge number of items casually discarded in them over centuries. So if you’ve got bored of metal detecting and
fancy something different, turn up with your equipment, make sure you are not on private property and you throw the line into the water. The key to successful fishing is to pull the line back in again slowly as pulling it too fast could result in the magnet getting snagged onto something solid and getting lodged. There’s also the possibility if you pull too fast you can lose your precious treasure if the magnet passes too quickly over the items in the water.

Rwanda, a small landlocked country in east-central Africa, is trying to recover from the ethnic strife that culminated in government-sponsored genocide in the mid-1990s. In the genocide, an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by dominant Hutu forces in 100 days. The country has struggled with its legacy of ethnic tension associated with the traditionally unequal relationship between the Tutsi minority and the majority Hutus. Rwanda is striving to rebuild its economy, with coffee and tea production among its main exports. The World Bank has praised Rwanda’s “remarkable development successes”, which have helped reduce poverty and inequality. But Paul Kagame, who became president in

Full Name : Robert Hepler Lowe Date of Birth : March 17 1964 Rob Lowe was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Barbara Lynn (Hepler), a schoolteacher, and Charles Davis Lowe, a lawyer. His brother is actor Chad Lowe. He has German, as well as English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh ancestry. Lowe’s family moved to Dayton, Ohio, when he was a child. Rob broke into acting in his teens. He spent the 1980s as a member of the “Brat Pack”, a group of young, powerful and reckless actors and actresses that included Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen and Judd Nelson, among others. In 1988 Lowe was involved in a scandal centering around a sexually explicit videotape which involved a minor, for which he did 20 hours of community service in Dayton. He subsequently sought
help for his problems with drugs and alcohol and has re-emerged in the 1990s as a clean and sober husband and father. Mike Myers is known to have resurrected Rob’s acting career. He and Rob became close friends while filming Wayne’s World (1992). He left the television series The West Wing (1999). Reports vary as to why, but it seems to have been a combination of salary dispute and screen-time dispute (the character he plays got less focus on the series in more recent episodes). He later appeared in the first 16 episodes of the next season, though.

Joke : The Tragic Accident
These three guys die together in a tragic accident and they all go to heaven. When they get there, St. Peter greets them and tells them, “We only have one rule here in heaven. Don’t step on the ducks.” So, they enter heaven and sure enough, there are ducks all over the place. It’s almost impossible not to step on a duck there’s so many, and though they try their utmost to avoid standing on them, the first guy soon accidentally steps on one. St. Peter then appears with the ugliest woman the guy had ever seen. St. Peter chains the woman to the guy and says to him, “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly woman!” The next day, the second guy also accidentally steps on a duck. Once again, St. Peter shows up and with him is another extremely ugly woman. He chains the woman to the second guy saying, “Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to spend eternity chained to this ugly woman!”
The third guy has observed all this and as he really doesn’t want to be chained to an ugly woman for eternity, he’s extremely careful where he steps. Indeed, he manages to go months without stepping on any ducks. One day though, St.Peter appears with the most gorgeous woman the guy has ever laid eyes on. She’s tall, curvaceous, tanned and extremely sexy. Without a word, St. Peter chains the woman to the third guy. The guy happily says to the woman, “I wonder what I did to deserve being chained to you for all eternity?” The woman replies, “I don’t know about you, but I stepped on a duck.”

Scooter Rental Scams..
Dear Sentinella, We have recently rented a scooter in a popular beach resort on the Costa del Sol. We would like to inform tourists of the difficulties one could face when renting a scooter. Even if a car accidentally reverses into it while it’s parked, you run the risk of paying for damages far beyond what you would expect for something that was not your fault. There are professional scooter rental companies who understand wear and tear and that things like stone chips and scratches are part of their hire cost. They hire good quality brand named scooters that will resist a minor bump without shattering into a million pieces, like bikes used by some non professional companies which use cheap Chinese blank brand scooters. Some of these bikes can be less stable and in some cases unreliable on the roads. In this particular instance, my friend and I returned a scooter which had been knocked over by another vehicle in a car park, we returned the scooter to the rental place, expecting to pay something for the minimal cosmetic damage caused. The shop owner’s face looked like thunder and there was a lot of whispering going on between him and his wife. We had suggested coming to an arrangement for the damage, as it was not caused by me or my friend, rather than come home to an uncertain bill on my Visa card. At that point I was almost threatened with the extensive, clause ridden pink rental contract that I had signed previously. “You will pay for everything that is marked or damaged on the scooter”, he said whilst slapping the contract on the counter! Both him and his wife went through what seemed like a well rehearsed tourist rip-off, scanning the scooter for the least little blemish and charging for the entire parts! Indicators, mirrors, mud guards, handle grips, break levers storage box and god knows what else! After attempting to explain that some of the scratches could have already been on the scooter, they already had the entire wish list of replacements in order. Ripping holidaymakers off came so naturally to these people and they had their scam perfected. To cut a long story short, for the superficial damage to the moped the rental company charged us a grand total of €581.00 Things to be aware of when renting a scooter... A regular deposit is approximately 250€, if they
charge more, shop around! Look for companies with brand named bikes and not cheap imitation scooters Read the contract over a coffee before signing and renting the scooter Research your own private insurance which may protect you from scammers Take pictures of the bike in front of the owner before you rent Ps: we really love the Sentinella magazine Shelly & Tina xx

Dory, also called John Dory, any of several marine fishes of the family Zeidae (order Zeiformes), found worldwide in moderately deep waters. The members of the family are large-mouthed fish, deep-bodied but thin from side to side. The John Dory (Zenopsis conchifera), a food fish of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, is one of the better-known species. It ranges from the shore to waters about 200 m (650 feet) deep and reaches a maximum length of about 90 cm (3 feet). Grayish, with a distinctive, yellow-ringed black spot on each side, it has long pelvic fins, long, filamentous dorsal-fin spines, and rows of spines on the belly and at the bases of the dorsal and anal fins. A similar species, Z. japonicus, is found in the Pacific.
When John Dories are 3 or 4 years of age, they are ready to reproduce. This happens around the end of winter. They are substrate scatterers, which means that they release sperm and eggs into the water to fertilize. Typical lifespan is about 12 years in the wild. The cookery writer Eliza Acton observes in her 1845 book, Modern Cookery for Private Families, that John Dory “though of uninviting appearance, is considered by some persons as the most delicious fish that appears at table”. She recommends simply baking it “very gently”, avoiding drying it out in the oven.

Editorial from De Cotta Law
Family lawyers – a blessing or a curse? We all know good news is heard less often and that bad news sells newspapers. My good news this month is that family lawyers can -and indeed do - help couples whose relationships break down. In particular, where there are children involved, and by reaching agreement lengthy contentious proceedings can be avoided. Sadly, and all too often, people believe the involvement of lawyers in a family matter will increase tensions and lead to spiraling costs. The contrary can be the case. By managing the expectations of a client in financial matters, a realistic settlement can be reached which prevents the need to litigate and go to court in a contentious proceeding. Equally, a person in a weaker position can have their fears allayed and be protected by their lawyer. The same applies in child custody and visits agreements. It is far better to find a sensible solution than to hand the decision to a judge in court. It is true that a judge will act in the best interests of the child but it is still preferable to reach a workable agreement with the other
53
parent. In most areas of Spain, the court will not order Joint custody without the agreement of both parents. The default regime is for the non-custodial parent to have every other weekend, four weeks in summer and alternate Christmas, Easter and birthday holidays. The lawyer who advises you can draft this into an agreement which can be approved by the court, saving a lot of time and money. Although it is not inexpensive to take this agreement to the courts, it does give the security of having a fixed and established regime, bringing security to the children and the parents. If you have no children and there is no dispute over assets, an agreement to divorce can be reached and a Deed signed before a notary. This reduces costs and provides a binding divorce order which can be registered with the Civil Registry in Spain. Gaming Addiction... How do you know when you are an addict?
Now that the World Health Organisation has formally recognised gaming addiction as a disease, we look at a few examples of when gaming has effected a persons behaviour beyond any reasonable control. A 15-year-old boy, skipped school to play online games for over 16 hours a day, over a full three weeks. How did he do this? Every morning he put on his school uniform until his mother went to work. As soon as she left, he would change out of it and started playing. His mother would return home after he was supposed to have come home from school. To cover for himself at school, he had informed the school he was having surgery. His antics where eventually discovered. We’ve all been in a school yard scuffle, but a boy in Beijing took it to the next level. Apparently having lost himself in the game, Warcraft, he “became” a fire mage in his mind, and set his classmate on fire. For those who don’t play Warcraft, I’m sure it’s fairly easy to deduce what a fire mage does by putting two and two together. A man in South Korea almost pulled off three gaming all-nighters…in a row. After a 50-hour Starcraft session, the South Korean man collapsed and died from heart failure. It was presumed that his death was caused by exhaustion, because he had only stopped to use the washroom and for short periods of sleep. There have been other cases in China where people have been playing anywhere from 3 to 15 days. On December 27, 2004, a boy left a suicide note saying he wanted “to join the heroes of the game he worshiped.” The thirteenyear-old then jumped off a tall building after playing Warcraft for 36 hours straight. His parents are now suing the Chinese distributors of the game for 13,000 euros. A most extreme case of how gaming can take over a life - A three-year-old asian girl died of neglect when her parents spent more time raising a “virtual girl” than her. The game they had been playing was a game similar to Second Life, where players work virtual jobs and live a virtual second life. The couple had left for a 12-hour gaming session at the local internet café, leaving their
daughter unattended. Upon returning home, they found her dead. If you are concerned about gaming addiction you can find out more by visiting the following website - www.ukat.co.uk

How the Bilingual Brain Switches Languages!
It seems researchers are a little closer to knowing how the bilingual brain works. A new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences highlights how our minds shift from speaking in one language to another Past work had already narrowed in on a couple of brain regions related to cognitive control — the prefrontal cortex at the front of the brain and the anterior cingulate cortex more toward the back — as being involved in the switch. But these two separate acts, turning off one language and flipping on another, happen simultaneously. To truly isolate where the switch happens, researchers would have to study someone speaking in two languages at once, and then have them shift into just one. And since most people can’t do that, it’s been tricky for researchers to suss out what’s happening where. Switch On, Switch Off A team of experts from New York University and San Diego State University, though, devised a clever set-up. They recruited volunteers who were fluent in both English and American Sign Language (ASL). The team had those participants produce both English and ASL
simultaneously. Then, while using a brain imaging technique called magnetoencephalography that relies on measuring magnetic fields in the brain, the researchers had their simul-speakers change gears into conversing in just one language. The team was also able to test the opposite — having their bilingual participants go from one language to two. And it turns out past research was right — the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex do play in a role in helping people flip their language switch. But, it looks like it’s a lot easier for the brain to shift into a language than it is to shift out. The findings add a little bit of clarity to the often-murky quest of hammering out how language plays out in the brain.

6 Out Of 10 Ain’t Bad!
The European continent includes 48 different countries with a total population of more than 731 million people. It’s also home to some of the largest economies in the world. But Europe isn’t a homogenous area, and it’s broken into various economic blocs. The European Union (EU), for example, comprises 28 European states which generate an estimated 30% of the world’s GDP. 1. Germany Real GDP: 3.23 trillion Euros Population: 80.6 million Currency: Euro (€) Germany’s economy is the largest in Europe, accounting for 28% of the region’s GDP. The country’s low unemployment rate, low crime, developed infrastructure, and a highly qualified labour force all work in its favour. The country’s economy is driven largely by its services sector, including the tourism and banking industries, which are responsible for almost 70% of total GDP. Nearly one third of the country’s GDP is derived from the manufacturing and construction sectors, including automotive, machinery, chemicals, and electronic machinery.
2. France Real GDP: 2.4 trillion Euros Population: 64.93 million Currency: Euro (€) France has the second largest economy in Europe, and the sixth largest in the world. As the world’s most visited nation, France’s tourism industry is a major component of the country’s economy. France is also Europe’s leading agricultural center, and the sixth largest agricultural producer in the world. Other influential sectors include the chemical industry, manufacturing, services, energy, and the arms industry. 3. United Kingdom Real GDP: 2.3 trillion Euros Population: 65.5 million Currency: British Pound Sterling (£) The UK economy, the fifth-largest in the world, is reliant on a diverse cross-section of sectors, including agriculture, construction, hospitality, manufacturing, mining, financial services, the services industry, and oil and gas production– boosted by North Sea resources. However, the total UK economy varies by region, with

England and Scotland generating the highest GDP per capita, followed by Northern Ireland and then Wales. The British economy also has a strong tourism sector. London is the second-most visited city in the world. 4. Italy Real GDP: 1.78 trillion Euros Population: 59.79 million Currency: Euro (€) Italy is the eighth-largest exporter in the world. Nearly 60% of Italian exports, which are primarily agricultural, got to countries within the EU. Italy is the largest wine producer in the world, and its industrial, automotive and fashion design industries also play a big part in its GDP. Italy also has a large number of small- and medium-sized businesses. Despite its size and diversity, Italy’s economy struggles with structural problems and political corruption. 5. Russia Real GDP: 1.39 trillion Euros Population: 144.3 million Currency: Russian Ruble (RUB) A part of the Russian Federation’s total territory is within Europe, however Russia is technically considered part of Eurasia. The country’s economy is the fifth largest in Europe and the 11th largest in the world. European Russia makes up around 38% of Europe’s total land area, with its eastern border defined by the Ural Mountains and Kazakhstan. The Russian economy relies heavily on exports of its vast natural resources, including oil, gas, coal and timber. Russia’s petroleum industry is the largest in the world, and its mining industry is also a major component of the country’s economy. The country’s defense, automotive and aerospace industries also play a big role in its economy. 6. Spain Real GDP: 1.25 trillion Euros Population: 46 million Currency: Euro (€) The Spanish economy recently returned to health after many years of recession, and is now growing twice as fast as the Eurozone average. Spain also has a strong banking sector and a prominent automotive industry, and its foreign tourism industry has expanded, making Spain the third most visited country in the world. 7. Netherlands Real GDP: 762 billion Euros Population: 17 million Currency: Euro (€)

The Netherlands’ economy is bolstered by a strong natural resources sector, with large natural gas reserves and a healthy tourism industry. The country is also home to several prominent multinational companies. Thanks to an attractive corporate tax, many non-Dutch companies are headquartered in the Netherlands. 8. Switzerland Real GDP: 544 billion Euros Population: 8.45 million Currency: Swiss Franc (CHF) Switzerland has long been recognized as having one of the world’s most stable economies. While Switzerland is not a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) or of the EU, the country is a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). The Swiss economy is underpinned by a strong banking and financial sector, a highly developed tourism industry, a healthy industrial sector, and a booming watch and clock-making industry. 9. Poland Real GDP: 490 billion euros Population: 38.5 million Currency: Polish Zloty (PLN) Poland was the only European economy to avoid entering the recession during the global financial crisis, which began in 2007. Over the past three decades, the Polish economy has grown steadily. The pharmaceutical industry, agriculture, mining, and the banking and financial services sectors are some of the largest parts of the economy. 10. Sweden Real GDP: 479 billion Euros Population: 9.9 million Currency: Swedish Krona (SEK) Sweden is primarily export-oriented, with timber, hydropower and iron ore playing integral roles in foreign trade. Major industries that contribute to Sweden’s robust economy include pharmaceuticals, automotive, telecommunications, hydropower, and iron ore.

5 of the Best Long Songs in Pop !
The Stone Roses, ‘Fools Gold’ (9m53s) So new were the Roses to this dance game that they went and made a 10-minute single when they could’ve just asked Andrew Weatherall to extend a three-minute cut. The result was the funkiest thing in 36-inch flares Dexys Midnight Runners, ‘This Is What She’s Like’ (12m24s) It’s testament to Kevin Rowland’s somewhat refreshed state of mind in 1985 that he saw this as a viable comeback single after the transatlantic mega-sales of ‘Come On Eileen’ and the ‘Too-Rye-Ay’ album. It’s also testament to Mercury Records’ killjoy philistinism that they decided to cram it into a three-minute edit for radio to wholly ignore. Donna Summer, ‘Love To Love You Baby’ (16m54s) Some sexual athletes try to keep pace with this super-stretched disco orgasm. More power to you, very brave. Prince And The Revolution, ‘Purple Rain’ (8m42s) Back in the day, Prince saw a nine-minute
space and didn’t just fill it with an extended funky jam of dubious artistic verve. He stuffed it with a righteous frenzy of stymied love and ecstatic vocal impressions of guitar solos. Plus a load of tinkling piano at the end, sure, but don’t distract a man when he’s in the zone. David Bowie, ‘Station To Station’ (10m14s) The plastic fantastic soul of ‘Young Americans’ out of his system, Bowie returned to the freak scene double-quick with ‘Station To Station’, inventing Duran Duran’s ‘Planet Earth’ in the first few bars of chopper effects, then striking a blow for more wholesome causes with angular funk and pelting Thin White honky-tonk rock as the epic unfolded. Gets better as the minutes tick by. Like a casserole.

ARIES: March 21- April 20
LIBRA: September 23- October 22
With the Sun in opposition, you may experience difficulty in focusing this month Aries and some work-related stress. To combat both you could drop any distractions and practice some breath meditation.
As the Sun makes a solar return to your sign, it brings support from Jupiter and Pluto, making you feel good, and ready to take on the world. You’ll be a bright, shining light amongst your friends and colleagues.
TAURUS: April 21- May 21
SCORPIO: October 23- November 21
Mercury and Venus are stimulating Tauris this month, so watch out for strong intellectual and sensual distractions mid-October. With Uranus also coming into play soon too expect the unexpected.
October brings all round improvements to Scorpio, with Venus and Mercury supporting your sign. You will have grace and poise though maybe flirtatious and liberal. Enjoy fun and shared warmth with those close to you.
GEMINI: May 22- June 21
SAGITTARIUS: November 22- December 21
While Jupiter and Saturn continue to aid your progress, an extra boost is given from Uranus. Don’t get frustrated if some things seem a little slow, better to change attitude towards this and all will work out to your best interests.
During October, the dynamics for Sagittarius are similar to last month, meaning your overall situation is remains good, upbeat and well organised. Avoid being over intense and to rush things – go slowly and success will be yours.
CANCER: June 22- July 22
CAPRICORN: December 22- January 20
Feeling a little at odds with yourself? Then settle to what is immediately in front of you and try not to agitate over things you can’t fix. You would benefit from balancing work and homelife with some outdoor activities.
Things are fairly quiet again in October for Capricorn. So slow down, avoid making a bigger than necessary deal of any issues and just do the things you personally feel to be important. Adventure awaits but not this month!
LEO: July 23- August 23
AQUARIUS: January 21- February 19
Things have calmed down after last month meaning you can relax and go with the flow.
With Uranus giving you a high sense of freedom and liberty and Neptune a sense of connection to the universe, this is an excellent time to open up to new options and projects, or to travel adventurously. Enjoy!
If you remain calm and collected when faced with a predicted unexpected event, you’ll have a peaceful and enjoyable October. VIRGO: August 24- September 22 Energy and power comes to you courtesy of Mars this month Virgo. It’s a great time to make a home, renovate, decorate, work out at the gym, outline projects, plan wild adventures and just do everything that previously waited for this energy boost.
PISCES: February 20- March 20
Whilst you have energy to tackle and do things, you very much need to stay focused and not stray too far from previously well-thought out plans. Stay close to home to avoid over-extending yourself!

You’d better write it down, because you know you’ll forget it.” He says, “I can remember that! You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.” “I’d also like whipped cream. I’m certain you’ll forget that, so you’d better write it down!” she retorts. Irritated, he says, “I don’t need to write it down, I can remember it! Leave me alone! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream -I got it, for goodness sake!” Then he grumbles into the kitchen.
