QUESTIONS
with Grammy Award-winning vocalist
Steve Tyrell
Steve Tyrell is truly a renaissance man . . .
. . . and with over four decades in the music business, he has achieved great success as an artist, producer, songwriter, music supervisor, and performer. With his breakthrough performances in the movies Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride II, Steve Tyrell reinvented and re-popularized classic pop standards for a modernday audience. With the grit and soul of a lifetime of experiences, he has produced hits for Grammy-winning artists ranging from Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville, to Rod Stewart and Diana Ross. Steve himself has sold hundreds of thousands of albums and gained a passionate following all over the world. His hits “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Give Me the Simple Life,” “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” have launched thousands of weddings and millions of romances. He’s held top positions at Standards, Swing, and Big Band outlets with a devoted following at key Adult Contemporary Radio stations. With sold-out shows across America and raves from around the world, his following increases day by day. He will be performing a special show with jazz legend Diana Schurr on March 28 at Three Stages. We caught up with Steve to talk about making music and rediscovering the Great American Songbook.

At some point as a record producer, you put the whole track together. You do the arrangement and make the track, and the artist comes in and sings it. That happened a lot with Rod Stewart. Rod doesn’t like to be in the studio that much. When he does his rock and roll stuff, Rod is much more involved because he writes the songs.
Q. YOUR ALBUM, I’LL TAKE ROMANCE, ENDS WITH THE SONG “THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT.” HOW DID YOU DECIDE THAT WAS GOING TO BE THE CLOSING STATEMENT ON THE ALBUM?
and told John Burk, “Hey, John, President Clinton dropped by last night, and he gave me this good idea.” And that’s how the album, I’ll Take Romance, came to be.
Q. YOU GOT INTO DOING MORE RECORDING WHEN YOU WERE DOING MUSIC FOR FATHER OF THE BRIDE. THIS THEN GOT YOU ONSTAGE AND PERFORMING LIVE. HOW DID THIS ALL WORK?
I started out in Texas in high school making records; R&B-type records. I started producing my own records when I was 15-years-old like a lot of people did. And I had a few hits. It hadn’t been on an album in 10 I got fascinated with producing or 12 years, and the concept of I’ll and less interested in performing. Take Romance is for people who are In those days, we used to get in 5
vans and drive all around Texas and Louisiana and play gigs. I was more interested in making the music, so I got away from singing and more into studio work. Then I got a job in New York working for Scepter Records, and I was producing records all the time. I started doing record promotion, going from one city to another trying to get Dionne Warwick records played. I started signing artists that I thought were good like B.J. Thomas and Ronnie Milsap; I discovered him in Atlanta. Then I was working with Burt Bacharach and Hal David. I worked on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Alfie, and The Look of Love. I had sung in several movies before Father of the Bride, but it was just accident. We would have a demo for a song, and I would make the demo, singing it. And someone would say, “Well, let’s use that.” I got a job working on the music for Father of the Bride. They gave me an idea of what they wanted for their reception scene. They wanted to use that song, and they wanted a soulful version. So I made a demo of it with me singing it, and they loved it. And they said, “Man, you’ve got to be in the movie.” So I was, and that changed my life.
Q. IS THIS WHAT LED YOU TO PERFORMING CLASSIC GERSHWIN AND COLE PORTER TUNES?
That movie and that song really started this wave of the Great American Songbook that’s going on now. People weren’t doing standards. It was the grunge era in
pop music. Seattle bands were happening. I think the greatest record man that ever lived, really – is Ahmet Ertegun, because he discovered Ray
Porter. That was our parents’ music. But when Rod started singing it, people of this generation went, “Hey, man, that sounds great. I’ve got to buy that, man.”
believe that music we call the ‘‘ IGREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK is the GREATEST MUSIC EVER MADE, ever written, ever played, ever anything.

Charles and Aretha Franklin and Otis Q. WHEN YOU’RE APPROACHING A CLASSIC SONG — FOR EXAMPLE, Redding and Led Zeppelin. Val Azzoli, the co-chairman of “ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET” the board for Atlantic Records, went — HOW DO YOU APPROACH IT TO to the movie, Father of the Bride Part MAKE IT FRESH? You don’t try to make someone II. Val knew me, and called me, and said “Man, you should make an else’s version of it. A lot of people album of this stuff. I played it for Ahmet, and we loved the way you’re doing these songs.” And that was my first album. It ended up selling 300,000, 400,000 or something, and it was on the charts for about two or three years. And that’s the album that Rod Stewart heard. And that led him to record his series of Great American Songbook albums. I believe that music we call the Great American Songbook is the greatest music ever made, ever written, ever played, ever anything. Rod took it to a bunch of rock and rollers that had never thought about George Gershwin or Cole 7
copy Frank Sinatra– but the real reason for the Great American Songbook is to do it your own way. People ask me, “What’s the difference in the Great American Songbook and the later songs of the 20th century; the Elton John songs, the Paul Simon songs, the Stevie Wonder songs?” The difference is that you don’t want to hear 25 versions of “Superstition.” You don’t want to hear a lot of versions of “Fire and Rain.” You want to hear James Taylor sing that song, right? With the Great American Songbook you can love 25 versions of “It Had to Be You.” These songs go on and on, and they never get old.

I’ll be damned. Well, you know that “On the Sunny Side of the Street” was played on the next-tothe-last space shuttle mission? “On the Sunny Side of the Street” was what the astronauts used to wake up to on the flight of the Endeavor. They woke up every morning to me singing, “Grab your coat, and get your hat.” I was their alarm clock in outer space.
Q. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GOOD SINGER AND A GREAT SINGER?
It’s really about how you interpret the song and what your instincts are in interpreting the song. There’s the technical side of being a great singer where you have amazing sound and great technique, and maybe a certain musicality; there are people like that. I’m certainly not one of those. I try to sing the heart of the song. I don’t know if a great singer always brings the interpretation of the composer to light.
not the same. It’s almost like being on a surfboard or something. I’ve been playing my new album, too, and I’ll be playing it there. This is the centennial of Sammy Cahn—the great writer, Sammy Cahn. Last year, I found a song that was pitched to me—the very last song that he ever wrote. It’s called “It’s Crazy.” I started singing this song, and people just love it. I’ve sung a lot of Sammy Cahn songs in the past, and it led me to think, “Well, in the Centennial, maybe it would be a good idea to make an album of his music, his songs.” So I started playing it in New York in December, and I’m playing it now in Los Angeles. I recorded an album called It’s Magic: The Songs of Sammy Cahn. It has songs like “Come Fly With Me,” and “Call Me Irresponsible.” We’ll be playing a lot of his stuff.

The green ogre has four feature films under his belt, including the highest grossing animated movie of all time (Shrek 2). Like Mickey and Bugs before him, Shrek is definitely a household name. This season, Three Stages is lucky enough to host the muchloved fairytale character in his own stage production Shrek The Musical, a masterpiece of whirling color, bright punchy songs, and gags piled upon gags.
Where Did Shrek Come From, Anyway? “The swamp” is a pretty good answer and the one that most young fans would quickly offer. True as that is to the story, you might also wonder just where the story of Shrek came from. Shrek! the storybook was where we first got a taste of the ornery ogre. This work by famed illustrator and storywriter William Steig, was published in 1990 and because of its quirky story and bright animations it was quickly snapped up by movie-makers. Though Steven Spielberg first acquired the story, DreamWorks was able to negotiate for the rights to produce the story of Shrek as a film. It featured a combination of sharp

Then the adventure begins. Farquaad is either too clever or too cautious to rescue a princess on his own, so he makes a deal with Shrek. The ogre will rescue and deliver Princess Fiona from a firebreathing dragon. In exchange, Farquaad will give Shrek the deed
to his swamp so he can kick the fairytale creatures out. It sounds simple, but of course there are complications. Some firebreathing dragons are lonely and attracted to donkeys, and some princesses don’t want to be rescued by ogres. Fiona also ends up being a lot more than Shrek is ready for. However, a simple story synopsis doesn’t seem to do justice to the zaniness that is Shrek. That this is a feel-good story is a point no one would dare to argue. But the way that it’s presented is a complete departure from all major animated films that came before it. Likely it was the influence of the growing popularity of adultoriented cartoons in the 1990s that led the Shrek movie creators to be, well, how can we say it, a little naughty. Throughout the films, the young audience is entertained by somewhat gross humor, including enough flatulence jokes to turn the Lion King’s Pumba green with envy. At the same time, moms and dads in the theatre are treated to numerous double-entendres and corny jokes courtesy of Shrek and Donkey. Princess Fiona, who is admittedly a little unusual, plays the straight woman while causing a bit of mayhem here and there. There’s a bit of the old battle of the sexes involved, a difficult love story, and short jokes aimed at Lord Farquaad. Sides of many beloved fairytale characters never before considered are finally presented here, like the Big Bad Wolf’s crossdressing, Pinocchio’s penchant for speaking in ‘legalese’, and the
dogs, has already seen the Shrek films begs the question, “Why bother going to see Shrek as a musical?” The creators of the production make a very simple argument: it’s a story you already love but presented in a new way and with a new depth. This makes sense as there are serious limitations to cinema that can be overcome in the theatre. For one thing, the performance is live and interactive. The performers react to their audiences and tone down or really ham up their lines as they feel is appropriate. Shrek on Stage This little bit of sensitivity makes The fact that by now just about every performance of the musical everyone in the country, and their unique, but there’s more that makes impulse-control issues of the three little pigs. After all, at heart this is a story about being different, being ostracized for it, and ultimately overcoming the prejudices of others and celebrating difference and diversity. Without spoiling the ending for the few who haven’t seen it yet, this is also the theme and the plot of Shrek The Musical. But of course in a stage show, the presentation of the story is a lot more intimate, intense, absorbing, and more enchanting.
a stage production so much more captivating than a passive filmwatching experience. First and foremost, Shrek The Musical is – you guessed it – a musical! Whereas in the movies the music provides background feeling to the development of the plot, here it is front and center. The spoken lines merely help to provide some (wicked) comic relief and to move the storyline along. The Shrek story is re-told in 19 powerful musical numbers, most including exciting choreography involving numerous characters. This is a Broadway-caliber show and that means that the performers are the absolute top professionals in

musical theatre. The songs respond to this by providing mini-solo opportunities for the multiple singers in the cast. As for the leads, the vocal parts showcase their exceptional vocal talents. The music used in Shrek The Musical is orchestral pop and is accessible even to young audience members who may be experiencing their very first musical theatre performances. But when the strings sweep in, the drums boom, the brass crescendos and the singers let loose their power, it won’t just be the little ones in the audience who break out in goose bumps. Visually, the Shrek films gave
direction to the look of the settings and characters, some of which have been re-created in terrifically creative ways. Perry Sook looms as Shrek over the gorgeous Princess Fiona (Whitney Winfield), and while both characters look just about exactly as they did in the films, others are new and different. Most obvious are the romantically involved characters Donkey (Jeremy Gaston) and Dragon, played by a person and a giant puppet, respectively. The fairytale characters are so welldeveloped with their own personalities and back-stories that they seem like any of them could steal the show. 19

One character bound to be a favorite is Lord Farquaad. The vertically challenged noble is played hysterically by Christian Merriner – on his knees! The sets, too, are visually lush. Designer Tim Hatley has struck a perfect balance between keeping the scenes true to the movie original while constantly changing to help lead the audience through the vast spaces covered in the story. There is a lot to see, a lot to hear, and a lot of characters to get involved with. Somehow director Stepen Sposito manages to keep everything working in harmony so that the story still comes through as clearly as in the film version. But the experience in the theatre is just that much deeper. There is a magic to watching the whole production come together – costumes, sets, characters, music – and the stirring choruses of the musical pieces make the heart sing, too. It sounds cliché to say but there really is something here for everyone. Whether you like the high art of musical theatre or the low art of fart jokes, Shrek The Musical will entertain you with a story that you already know and love told in a new and fantastic way.

he Musical don’t sing or dance During the day they help rehabilitate others with behavioral problems. In their free time they have become popular stage actors. What makes them special is that they are both dogs. Jagger, 11-months old Chihuahua, plays the role of Bruiser, the pampered, fashion-forward companion to main character, “Elle Woods”. Kiki, a 3-year-old Frenglish Bulldog plays the role of not-asfortunate Rufus, caught in a custody battle between Paulette the hairdresser and her trailer-dwelling ex-boyfriend, Dewey. Although the dogs’ roles didn’t require an extensive repertoire of tricks, neither Jagger nor Kiki had ever worked “professionally” on stage before. Their owners, Ann King and Kristin Minnie, are dog trainers at The Local Bark, the popular boarding, daycare and training facility located in Rancho Cordova. Both dogs help the training staff at The Local Bark evaluate and rehabilitate dogs with behavioral problems; a job that requires nothing of them except being their normal, well-behaved selves. Kristin had previously trained the dog that played “Sandy” in El Dorado Musical Theatre’s rendition of Annie several years ago. Because the Legally Blonde: the Musical script called for a bulldog and a Chihuahua, the dog/handler teams seemed a natural fit for the show. Photo by LIsa Van Dyke
The roles of Bruiser and Rufus required the training duo to take off their dog-obedience hats and brush up on their trick-training skills. This was no small feat considering Jagger was just 9 months old when rehearsals started, and Kiki is deaf. While they might not be professional actors, both dogs have a ‘story’. Kiki’s roots are relatively unknown. She was found as a stray in poor health in Sacramento and fostered by NorCal Bulldog Rescue before being adopted by trainer Ann King, who often works with deaf dogs and bulldogs. Jagger’s background is more show-bizzy: He happens to be littermates with Tiny Beyonce who made her worldwide debut on the Today Show (among other major media outlets) last spring as the world’s tiniest puppy. Jagger was lucky to be born under the watchful eye of The Grace Foundation in El Dorado Hills. They had rescued his mother from being euthanized at an over-crowded shelter toward the end of her pregnancy. He was later adopted by the Minnie family. Each of these dogs brings different challenges to training for the stage. Not exactly the typical profile of a “stage dog,” Kiki’s deafness prevented her from learning her role using typical methods, which usually involve some verbal cues, such as dialogue in a script.
23
According to Ann, “Deafness in dogs usually doesn’t present much of an obstacle in their learning basic obedience nor does it keep them from being good pets. Hand signals for ‘sit’ and ‘down,’ for example, are the same, regardless of whether a dog is deaf” But Kiki’s role as Rufus required that she trot out of a trailer door – at a precise moment in the dialogue – through the legs of Dewey and into the arms of Paulette, who then picks her up and whisks her away. She also needed to walk off-leash across the stage with Kyle, the UPS guy who becomes Paulette’s new love interest. Because neither of these scenes could incorporate traditional hand signals, getting Kiki to perform would require that she develop positive associations with the actors and actually want to be with them. This, according to Ann, was accomplished with food and attention. “We needed Kiki to have relationships with the actors who played Paulette, Dewey, and Kyle. She had to actually make the decision to go to them or follow them rather than rely on standard hand signals, because we couldn’t expect the actors to risk breaking character to subtly give an awkward hand signal,” she said. Even without a hearing disability, Jagger’s performance success also
relied on his relationships with human cast mates. “Jagger’s young age and the fact he’s a pretty typical Chihuahua means he can be wary of ‘big’ things, like new people, loud music, and big dance numbers,” said Kristin. “We needed to make sure he trusted the two actors
who would be handling him.” Of his three scenes, two of them were in the arms of character Elle Woods. With a treat hidden in her palm and a finger looped through his collar, the actor was able to make it appear as though her arms were exactly where Jagger wanted to be.

Only the trainers could tell he was a little squirmy at times. In one scene, Jagger had to sit and stay in one of Elle’s big pink handbags set on a bed. This required a treat in the bottom of the bag – a reward for being there – and then lots of practice with the ‘stay’ command. Jagger’s – and Kristin’s – most challenging scene, though, was the first scene in Act 1, which essentially opened the play. On cue, Jagger had to run out to a mark mid-stage and have a Timmy’s-stuck-in-the-well, Lassie-style ‘conversation’ with the actor who plays Margo, Elle’s sorority sister. For every exclamation from Margo about Elle being in a wardrobe panic or stuck at the mall, Jagger needed to bark. Margo then had to pick him up and whisk him off stage. For both dogs, the relationship building started in rehearsals several weeks before the cast and crew started rehearsing at Three Stages. The trainers instructed the cast and crew to ignore the dogs completely. The actors who worked directly with the dogs needed to stand out in the crowd, which meant they were loaded up with aromatic chicken and steak treats and told to spoil the dogs. “We even had Jagger do a sleepover with Carly (the actor who plays Margo) and told her to go heavy on the affection,” said Kristin. Both trainers agreed that this kind of treatment is a big departure from the advice they usually give to clients who are trying to solve behavior problems. “Endless affection and unlimited treats are big no-no’s, even with our

own dogs,” according to Ann. But everyone agreed a few weeks of spoiling from specific cast members wouldn’t do any harm, and just the sight of the dogs around the theater provided some comic relief during intense rehearsals. Once they moved to the big stage and props were in place, Jagger and Kiki both needed to become desensitized to the lights and familiarized with the set pieces, and then practice their scenes in full dress rehearsal on a set stage. “Dogs are contextual learners,” according to Ann. “You can’t teach a dog a fairly complex series of behaviors, like in Jagger’s first scene, then expect him to replicate them on cue in a totally different environment with a person who might look completely different in costume than she did in rehearsal.” Although Kiki’s scenes were much simpler than Jagger’s and she appeared confident in her off-leash walk across stage with the UPS guy, audience members opening

weekend may have gotten the sense that Kiki was being shoved out the door of the trailer. “We absolutely had to shove Kiki out of the trailer door between ‘Dewey’s’ legs,” laughed Ann. “She pulled a typical bulldog move and slammed on the breaks the first couple of shows.” However, Kristin’s work with Jagger and ‘Margo’ definitely showed on opening weekend, with Jagger nailing his scenes in front of 25
an oooing and ahhhing audience. Those who saw the show on the second weekend, however, might have seen some improvisation by Jagger. “We were so confident with his performance opening weekend that we made the mistake of not running through the scene real-time right before the show started on that second Friday,” said Kristin. “Jagger got out halfway to his mark and probably forgot what he was
supposed to do, and started to walk back toward where I was hiding in the portal” she said. “It was mortifying.” Fortunately, a quick-thinking cast member on stage responded to Jagger’s improv with some of her own. The sorority sister picked him up and ran off-stage as called for in the scene, flawlessly keeping with the movement and spirit of the scene. Trainers refined their plan for both dogs: Make sure they are a
little hungry before the show, run the scenes a couple times, and right before the curtain goes up, remind them who has the chicken. When asked if Jagger would be pursuing any other leading dog roles on stage, Kristin said, “I just started teaching a Tricks class at The Local Bark, so I’m hoping there will be lots of owners who want their dogs to become part of the talent pool for EDMT shows,” she said. When asked about Kiki’s future on stage, Ann said there probably wasn’t one. “I think we should quit while we’re ahead and have this be the fantastic once-in-a-lifetime experience it was for both of us,” she said. “Unless she can learn to ride a skateboard like Tillman the famous bulldog and create her own line of dog treats, we’ll probably just stick to her day job of playing ‘normal dog’ with me at work”.

The 32-year-old singer has become a leading exponent of fado—the poetic, deeply expressive idiom
which personifies the Portuguese psyche. As with blues and country music in the US, tango in Argentina, or samba in Brazil, fado has evolved from humble origins to win broad appeal. “It needs no translation,” Ms. Moura says simply. “It is music that exposes every vocal nuance, and Ms. Moura had nothing to hide. Her lush alto voice can be smoky and hesitant or clear and pointed.” (New York Times).
