TRANSPORT

in Irkutsk

24

The public transport’s fare around Irkutsk city makes up 12 rubles. If you take a tram, you should pay a fare to the fare collector shortly after entering the tram. In buses and trolleybuses, you should pay at the exit (the fare is paid to the driver). Sometimes, the driver collects an extra 12 rubles fare, depending on how much luggage you have.

25

Irkutsk public transport works from 6:00 until 22:00. At any other time, it’s better to order a taxi.

Taxi in Irkutsk Taxis can often be hired next to Irkutsk-Passazhirskyi railway station, airport, and central market. Sometimes they stop by large hotels like Courtyard by Marriott, Angara Hotel, or Irkutsk Hotel. However, it is safer to order a taxi by phone through taxi services or to ask reception in any big hotel to call a taxi for you. A taxi to any place of Irkutsk City can’t cost more than 500 rubles. If the driver asks for more money, he probably wants to trick you. It may be necessary for you to discuss the fare with the driver before you get into a taxi.

Lake Baikal

TOURS AROUND

Listvyanka SETTLEMENT

42

Listvyanka Settlement — or Listvennichnoye, that’s how it was called by the first Siberian settlers — is located near the separating line between Lake Baikal and Angara River. This place seems to be double-natured in terms of history. With its new hotels and actively developing infrastructure, this is a modern tourist settlement at first sight. If you take a longer walk along the shoreline, the time begins to lose its importance. You will find yourself surrounded by wild nature that has never been reclaimed or tamed and still is a law to itself. You will find yourself observing the spanless waters and clouded mountain ranges.

The Legend

The Shaman Stone From the ancient times, people described the Shaman Stone as an unusual place. According to beliefs of the local dwellers, Ama Sagan Noyon, the master of Angara river, lived there. People used to pray and perform rituals there. They also had a custom of bringing there an evil doer and leaving him alone on the stone. If he wasn’t washed away with Baikal waters by the morning, he was considered innocent. The legend says that Baikal wanted his beautiful daughter Angara to marry a young warrior called Irkut (Irkut River is one of the Angara’s tributaries). But Angara had already been in love with another warrior, Enisey, and managed to escape from the father. In anger, Baikal threw an enormous stone in the wake of his daughter — and that was the Shaman Stone. After the Hydroelectric Power Station Irkutsk had been built, the Angara water level raised, and it’s possible to see the very top of the Shaman Stone (1–1,5 m) in fine weather.

BOLSHIYE

Koty

46

A quiet settlement with an odd name Bolshiye Koty is hidden among the taiga 18 km away from the famous Listvyanka Settlement, where many tourists begin to explore Lake Baikal. Why Bolshiye Koty? There are several versions. One of them is related to fishing. This settlement is situated in a narrow valley among Baikal rocks near the bank of the Bolshaya Kotinka river. Formerly, the special traps called “kotsy” were used for the deep-sea fishing in the fish spawning season. The similar word can be found in the Russian dictionary of Dal: the word “koty” means a fish trap set at a river mouth. Another version that explains the name’s origin is the word “kotky” or “koty” that was used for wooden shoes of katorzhniks (convicts that had been exiled to Siberia). The Museum of Baikal is situated in the settlement today; more than 400 various exhibits are presented here, including a rich collection of beetles, butterflies, and dragonflies. You can also visit a working scientific research station here.

Interesting!

Skriper Rock In the late 18th century, the rock near the settlement Bolshiye Koty was called Chayachy. The origin of its current name, Skriper, is associated with a gold mine that was located nearby in the 19th century. An earthmoving machine called scraper worked on the gold mine. For many years, this machine served as main reference point of the area, and the entire rocky massif derived its name in the end. The word “scraper” (from English “to scrape”) has become the Russian “skriper”, similar in sound to the verb “skripet”. The name Skriper Rock had been kept. In 1985, it was awarded the status of the state nature monument of landscape type.

Olkhon ISLAND

50

Olkhon is considered to be the heart of Lake Baikal. This island is enfolded in ancient legends. A poetic legend about the origin of the Buryat people is connected with this place. According to the legend, a hunter called Horidoy got married to the Holy Mother-swan, and they had eleven sons who became the ancestors of eleven Khorinsky tribes. The island is protected from the intruders by Baikal cold waters and that’s why it has kept its traditions longer than other places. According to the legend, the first Buryat shaman got his powers there. In Genghis Khan’s times, Mongolian shamans came there during their persecution by lamas. To the present day, Olkhon Island has a reputation of a place where Baikal’s formidable spirits live.

Legend Burkhan Cape Burkhan Cape (as known as Shaman Rock, Shamanka) is one of the nine holy places in Asia. It is situated in Khuzhir village. According to the beliefs of Buryat shamans, the most formidable and esteemed spirit, the keeper of Olkhon, lives in a cave of the cape. People brought sacrifices for him. It had been vowed there since the first shamans appeared. Shamans were buried or burnt to ashes in the sacred grove near the cape. The devotional items gathered in this grove are kept in the local historical museum. After Tibetan Buddhism had been spread among the Buryats, the cave gained respect of Buryat Buddhists, too. Initially, shamanistic rites had been carried out in the cave, and the Buddha’s altar was built there afterwards. Women used to keep two miles away from that place. There had been a belief that “guilty” and “sinful” women could desecrate the holy place. According to another version, that was a protection for women. It was believed that the cave was able to impact the childbirth badly or even make a woman sterile.

BOLSHOYE

Goloustnoye

54

Bolshoye Goloustnoye is a village with well-developed tourist infrastructure

that is situated on the western shore of Lake Baikal in the Goloustnaya river’s delta. It is about 120 km far from Irkutsk.

It is surprising that Goloustnaya river starts next to Lake Baikal and then makes a big loop, returns to the lake and gives its waters to Baikal. In its striving for Baikal, the river divided the steppe with 8 beds. 5 of them are dried up now and the water flows only through the latter three. If you have a look at that from far away you will see only bare mouths. Hence the river has its name Goloustnaya (Bare Mouths). History of establishment and development of Bolshoye Goloustnoye village is connected with a water trade route between Russia and China. Merchant ships got to the Idin-Gol river’s delta (Buryat name of Goloustnaya river) by Angara river and on Baikal from Irkutsk. Already from here they crossed Baikal and found themselves in the Selenga delta. In the 17th century, a special wharf had been constructed for the ships. Later, a settlement was established near the wharf. The protopope Avvakum and the Decembrists stayed in Bolshoye Goloustnoye. The one of the first Baikal lighthouses was built in this settlement.

History Saint Nicolas Church The first chapel was built in 1701 on the Baikal bank in Bolshoye Goloustnoye. In the late 17th century, the Ambassadorial monastery’s monks placed a cross there. St. Nicolas parish was consecrated in February 1867 and the St. Nicolas Church — the navigators’ protector was constructed nearby. 70 years after, in the Soviet period, the church was closed, the bells were taken away, and all the icons but two were burnt. Later, a dancing hall was established there. The head of administration, who ordered to demolish this church, is said to face the punishment from heaven — he became blind. The first divine services took place in the restored church in 1995. Though after that the building was twice burnt to ashes and for the last time it was rebuilt in 2004.

Peschanaya BAY

58

Baikalskaya Riviera. This name is used thank to the mild microclimate and a great number of sunny days in Peschanaya Bay, or Peschanka. One of the most beautiful and amazing places of Baikal is situated in the southern part of Lake’s west coast 75 km away from the Angara river’s source to the northeast, 35 km away of Bolshoye Goloustnoye to the north and 86 km away from the Buguldeyka village to the south. This cozy Bay is formed by a sandy hillside covered with pine forest. The comfort of this sacred place is protected by Bolshaya and Malaya Kolokolnya rocky capes.

What’s nearby Babushka Bay Babushka Bay, a picturesque and comfortable (but kind of more “compact”) place, is situated 1,5 km away from Peschanaya Bay. It is formed by Ded Cape from the west and by Bolshaya Kolokolnya Cape from the north. Formerly, Babushka Bay was famous for its beach. Baikal casted lots of colorless and transparent quartz stones and their varieties like light chalcedonies and bright jaspers on the shore. Unfortunately, the famous beach is not the same anymore.

Port Baikal

THE CIRCUMBAIKAL RAILWAY

62

The Circum-Baikal Railway is a unique place, an engineering monument built in the late 19th century. Tunnels and stone galleries of the Circum-Baikal Railway were made upon non-typical projects of Russian, Italian and Prussian engineers.

Some time ago, the Circum-Baikal Railway was a part of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Then the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station was built in the 1950s,

so a part of the road constructed along the Angara River had been flooded, and the way turned to a dead-end.

Nowadays, the Circum-Baikal Railway is a part of the railway line between the small settlement called Port Baikal and Kultuk. There are three tourist trains that run there: the ordinary one that is pulled by a diesel locomotive; the vintage one that is pulled by steam locomotive traction, and the modern one that is a rail tramway. The route’s destination is Listvyanka Settlement or Irkutsk City and the travel makes up about 12 hours. Then, it is convenient to continue your journey to Tunkinskaya Valley, Baikalsk or Olkhon Island.

Interesting! The Circum-Baikal Railway Construction of the Circum-Baikal Railway required tremendous effort and uncommon decisions. The task was complicated. People had to build 40 tunnels, 16 stone galleries, 470 viaducts and 280 retaining walls. The longest tunnel of the Circum-Baikal Railway is 778 meters long and passes through the Polovinniy Cape at the route’s 110th km. The train runs through the tunnel for long enough so you’ll have a chance to think up a good wish (people believe that if you make a wish in that place it will for sure come true).

Sludyanka

66

Sludyanka is a small town in Irkutsk region in the west of Lake Baikal. The distance from the regional center makes up 110 km. It is a large railway loop of Circum-Baikal Railway. Circum-Baikal Railway starts here. Many tourist routes in Sayan and Khamar-Daban Mountains begin in Sludyanka. One of the most popular routes is a route to Cherskiy Peak.

Shamanskiy Cape is situated not far — 3 km from the town. It is the most western point of Lake Baikal.

Legend Shamanskiy Cape Shamanskiy Cape (Aikha-Shulun, “Terrible Stone”) is a continuation of a KhamarDaban burg. According to the legend, a long time ago, a shaman was buried in the cave. Perhaps for this reason the ancient Buryats considered this place as a sacred one and performed their sacrificial rites there to gain the spirits’ favor. As time went by, Russian merchants began to stay on Shamanskiy Cape. They adopted the custom of sacrificial rite thinking that they could improve their commerce in such a way. Then the caves of Shamanskiy Cape submerged at high tide and became a legend because of construction of the electric power station and Baikal’s rising tide. Only one cave has been left but it is almost flooded. You can travel to it by boat in summer or on the ice in winter.

You can explore waterfalls in its upstream flow, and magnificent alpine meadows in the mountains. Besides, Arshan is famous for the traditional Buryat cuisine. Buuzy (pozy) are served at every café.

Legend How Arshan Settlement had been discovered? That was a lifetime ago. A Buryat hunter went hunting. He tracked down a beautiful deer, shot an arrow at him and managed to injure him. In delight for a lucky shot, he began to follow the deer. Day by day, he traced the deer but couldn’t get up to him. He was very tired, but his excitement made him go on. Finally, he did that and the deer, also exhausted and worn-out, was standing right before him. The hunter wanted to shoot one more arrow but he wasn’t even able to stretch a bow. Suddenly, the deer went to a tiny lake, or rather a big and deep puddle. He stood in its waters for some time and suddenly jumped out on the shore as if he hadn’t been wounded at all. The hunter was astonished: what a marvelous lake was that! He came down, plunged himself in and felt that his tiredness vanished. He stood there longer and felt himself strong like a hero. He thanked all the gods and spirits that he knew, returned to his settlement, and told everyone about his finding.

Baikalsk, along with Sobolinaya Mountain, is a popular skiing center of Eastern Siberia. The city is located on the shore of the southern Lake Baikal at the foots of picturesque mountains of Khamar-Daban 150 km away from Irkutsk, and 300 km away of Ulan-Ude to the west. It is situated at the same time on the federal highway “Baikal” and on the Trans-Siberian Railway, and that’s why it is easy to get there. The Sobolinaya Mountain disposes three main slopes intended for mass skiing as well as sport skiing. The slopes’ length makes up 2 000 meters with elevation changes — 500 meters. There are six certified sport tracks and a number of tourist routes with specially equipped training slopes for the beginners and children.

Tradition Strawberry Festival Baikalsk attracts visitors not only in winter but in summer, too. In the second half of July, the strawberry “Victoria” festival, a bright and delicious event, is held here. Due to the Baikal climate the berries are big, fragrant and sweet. Irkutsk residents stock up with buckets and boxes for strawberry in advance. More than twenty varieties of this berry are cultivated in Baikalsk. “Zinga-Zinga” is one of the best. You should try this queen of berries!

A unique bath-house made of ice bricks is built on the shore of the lake every winter in Baikalsk. Doors and shelves are made of wood but the oven is made of iron. The thick ice allows warming up the sweat bath up to 120 degrees. The ice crackles and melts but it doesn’t give up! After this heat you can easily jump into the ice-hole and then again in the sweat bath!

It is situated at the mouth of the Barguzin River at its confluence with the Barguzinsky gulf. In summer, Ust-Barguzin is the most popular place for visitors. Tourists pass through it during the travel, by the overland route, to the Barguzinskaya valley or in the Zabaikalskiy national park. The area of the national park which includes the water area of Barguzinskiy and Chivyrkuiskiy gulfs, Ushkany Islands, begins behind Ust-Barguzin. This place is considered one of the best on Baikal because of its picturesque nature, shallow sandy beaches, and hot springs. A variety of unique natural monuments attracts a great number of travelers.

Interesting!

Ushkany Islands Four rocky islands situated 8 km away from the Svyatoy Nos Peninsula (Holy Nose), are famous for the biggest seal-rookery (Nerpa) on Baikal. The interest

But the nerpa (seal) is not all surprising things of Ushkany Islands. You can see there rare black birches and lots of ants!

82

If you are interested in the north of Baikal, Severobaikalsk city will become the reference point of your travel. It is situated 440 km away from Ulan-Ude and 500 km away from Irkutsk. There is a small straight area surrounded from three sides by high burgs of Baikal mountain range. From here, you can easily get to unique natural sites like reserves, lakes, springs, mountains and sands‌ Besides, the city itself also surprises tourists, chiefly, by its original architecture. Many people go to Severobaikalsk in order to make a journey in the past, to plunge into the post-soviet time, the seventies of the 20th century. Most dwelling houses are made according to standard project elaborated specially for Severobaikalsk city. Their unusual polygon form, lack of balconies and enclosed yards protected from the penetrating winds makes them different from the other buildings. Such buildings always impress the visitors of Severobaikalsk.

Interesting!

Severobaikalsk Railway Station Huge windows and curved lines of a mowed roof that resembles of slide or sail. The showy railway station created by St. Petersburg architects is the pride of Severobaikalsk residents. As if it reminds that the city originated and exists up to this day thanks to the Baikal-Amur Mainline.

Ulan-Ude is a capital of Buryatia and the most ancient city in Russia. The capital of Hunnu empire, the first large state of Central Asia, was built in those areas in the III century B. C. Being on the brisk Tea and Silk Roads, the city has been developing as the center of trade and later as the center of industry and handicrafts. The modern city is enough compact and cozy; the streets are wide and airy. There are many ancient buildings and even quarters with the pattern of wooden architecture preserved by a miracle in the city center.

Nearby Ivolginskiy Datsan The largest Siberian monastic complex is situated 30 km away from Ulan-Ude. It takes more than an hour to explore it! There are more than ten various temples (dugans that are guarded by lions), numerous stupas and prayerful mills.

Climate and weather

The Baikal climate, with general features of its continental type,

is marked by considerable variety. Baikal water mass has a profound effect on the climate.

The average annual tempe rature on Baikal is close to zero degrees, an average January temperature may sink to -18°C,

and average temperature in July may be up to +15°C. The absolute maximum temperature makes up +28–29°C, while its absolute minimum is -32 to -33°C. The influence of Baikal’s cold water mass in summer affects the rising air currents’ reduction and the cloudiness diminution. As a result, the fair partly cloudy weather dominates on the Baikal coast.

The maximum rainfalls

are within the period from April to October. Snow cover usually becomes steady in mid-November and is destroyed at the end of April; Baikal’s freeze-up stays from the first decade of January until the first decade of May.

300 sunny days per year

are registered at Baikal. That can be compared with the Black Sea holiday resorts. Anyway, the weather at Baikal is changeable that’s why you should take warm clothes, comfortable footwear, hats, and sun cream with you in your journey.

92

sleeves and lower parts of trousers. Socks should be pulled over trousers to prevent a tick from crawling to your body. The TBE-vaccination is the most effective means of disease prevention. It should be done no less than 44 days before the journey. The TBE-vaccination doesn’t guarantee full protection against encephalitis, but may considerably reduce disease symptoms. If you neglected the TBE-vaccination and then you got stung, you should make an injection of immunoglobulin against ticks. And it is important to do it during three days after the sting.

Beware of the ticks! Ticks can be found in forests near Irkutsk and Lake Baikal, for example, in Melnichnaya Pad, the left bank of the Angara river, the Baikal highway from 17th to 26th km, Goloustenskiy highway in the Pivovarikha area, or Kultukskiy highway. Taiga ticks are rarely found on the Baikal shores but it can live at the Circum-Baikal Railway’s area and on the Svyatoy Nos Peninsula. As to Olkhon, encephalitic ticks haven’t been registered yet. Ticks are most active from mid-May until mid-June.

Aerosols like “Deta” and pencils against ticks are considered to be another means used against ticks. If a tick is still sticked, you should grease it with oil, fat, or kerosene. You can ever cover a tick with a bottle of water for 10-15 minutes. It leads to the stick’s “sealing” and suffocation. Then you should carefully remove a tick by swinging it.

Precautious:

How to remove a tick?

It is necessary to check over yourself every 10-15 minutes. You should give particular attention to your hair, area behind the ears, armpits, groin and neck. Your clothes should be made of heavyweight materials and have a hood. Elastics should be sewed on

You can remove a tick with a thread. Make a loop and slowly swing a tick stretching threads until its body comes out. After removing the tick, the wound should be cleansed with iodine or spirit.
