Paper is a thin material mainly used for writing upon, printing upon, drawing or for packaging. It is produced by pressing together moist fibers, typically cellulose pulp derived from wood, rags or grasses, and drying them into flexible sheets.
Each year, the United States uses 85.5 million tons of paper, of which we recycle 22% or 19 million tons.
We could recycle up to 70% or 46 million tons, which could save
782 million trees.
~introduction~ If Americans recycled every phone book each year, an estimated 650,000 tons of paper could be saved. Recycling half the world’s paper would save 20 million acres of forest.

Every day, an average country buys about 62 million newspapers and throw out around 44 million of them. If we recycled just half of our newsprint every year, we would need 3,200 fewer garbage trucks to collect our trash. Recycled newsprint is used to make products such as cereal boxes, egg cartons, pencils, grocery bags, tissue paper, insulation materials, animal bedding, and new newsprint.

Producing recycled paper takes approximately 60% less energy than regular paper types. One ton of recyled paper saves 4,000 Kilowatt Hours of electrycity, which is enough to power an average home for 6 months continiously. If we recycled all of the paper we used , we could save enough energy to power 25 million more homes around the world.
Resulting pulp is cleaned and de-inked by putting inside a tank and blowing air through it

Put your pulp into a container with water
Dip a window screen in the container, take tke formed sheet of wet paper from the screen and lay down to dry
Recycling at home is an easy and necessary thing to do. It can save you money and cut your waste at least by half or probably more.

The basic papermaking tools include a blender, a stack of kitchen towels, a plastic washbowl, a mold and a deckle. The best thing about home papermaking is that it requires very little equipment to produce excellent results. Apart from a few essential items, most of the setup is open to improvisation and can be easily assembled for use in the kitchen, garage, or yard. Non-waterproof surface areas can be protected using plastic sheets, and the papermaker would be wise to wear rubber boots and a rubber apron.
One of the most important equipments of papermaking is the mold and the deckle The mold is the screen covered frame upon which the sheet of paper is formed. The deckle is a frame that is placed on the mold to define the edge of the paper. If you are making your own molds and deckles picture frames with screening streched across and stapled are suitable and use brass fittings waterproof glue, and several coats of liquid plastic coating.
A well made mold and deckle set will save the frustration of constant repair and replacement of poorly designed and constructed models.

A 125 x 175 mm mold and deckle can be used in an average washbowl. Purchased molds and deckles often have a screen of heat shrinking polypropylene which keeps its shape better than a regular screening and can be thightened by a few passes of a hot blowdryer.

The Deckle The Mold A Window Screen As shown in the illustration, these three pieces should sit on top of eachother perfectly. Best way to secure the wooden frames is to both screwing and gluing them together.
Next step is to construct the mold and the deckle.

Use appropriate screws in the corners to secure the stakes together, you can add glue too.

Acquire a window screen and stretch it across the frame and secure with push pins.

Construction of the deckle is same as costructing the mold. You don’t need to stretch a screen over the deckle. You need to make it bigger than the mold so it can fit just like a glove. A kitchen blender is useful for blending small pieces of paper and plants into a smooth paper pulp. You need to gather all the used and unnecessary paper products in your house such as egg and cereal boxes, brown wrapping paper, kraft papers, old office papers, old newspapers, messages in a bottle, and most importantly those damn bill and spam mails.
Rip the paper and plants into small pieces and let the blender do its work.

Fill the blender with 2/3 full of warm water and than add your cute pieces of paper galaxy into the blender.

Semi processed sheets of paper can be torn into small pieces and soaked overnight or for at least 1 hour. Process a few pieces at a time in a blender two thirds full of water until smooth, than strain pulp for 2 minutes. Four cups of pulp will make about 20 sheets of 125 x 175 mm paper.
We are almost done! Run the blender until the mixture feels and looks smooth. Pour the newly created pulp into a tub or a container large enough to hold the deckle and the mold.
Try to be extra careful while working with wet surfaces and electric equipment. It is very likely to get a strong shock from the household blenders.
Put your mold inside the deckle, dip it in the pulp/water mixture and slowly lift it up. Carefully remove the deckle from the mold and slowly lay the mold on top of a kitchen towel. Get a sponge and start pressing from the back of the mold and try to remove as much water as you can.

If you don’t remove enough water from the mold, the wet paper won’t leave the screen resulting in tears and holes.

Oh, Hello! Its you again, what a coincidence, and you have your mold and deckle with you.
Take the mold and the deckle containing a layer of wet paper, out of the water and seperate them.
Slowly lay down the paper covered side of the mold onto a cloth with an angle
Great! You are dipping your thing in that container which contains water and pulp mixture
Than get a sponge and press from behind of the mold while squeezing water out. Than you can cover your new layer of paper with an other cloth and let it dry for a day, then peel your paper from the cloth and get ready for the surprise waiting for you on the next page.

How would you like some recipes for your newly gained skill? Paper can be made from an endlesss variety of pulp types. Recycled office paper, brown paper bags, and many commonfield garden plants may be prepared as pulp for papermaking.
It may feel as though there is not enough pulp on the mold when you couch your first sheet but go ahead and couch, you will be surprised at the way in which the fibers have interwoven.
Add half a cup of plant fiber to a blender two thirds full of water. Blending for a few seconds will produce a coarse paper, while more blending will refine the pulp and the paper will be smoother and contain fewer large flecks.
Cotton pulp produces a pure white sheet which is easyly pigmented with fabric dye. It can also be colored with special pigments available from papermaking suppliers.
Unbleached abaca fibers are longer than cotton fibers and are creamy beige in color.
This pulp also accepts dye or pigments as well and the sheets are strong and long lasting.
~lĂŞ paper recipes~ Use your hands to gently mix the confetti into the pulp until the material is evenly distributed. The paper will be accented with the color of your confetti.

Homemade confetti can be easily produced using a hole punch which lets you make holes of varying sizes. This method allows for specific paper types to be easily prepared. Try making confetti from foil warpping paper, colorful paper napkins and other interesting sources.
Attach some strings to your papers! Walk through the craft and sewing section of a store and collect packages of wonderful threads and strings ranging from natural jute to embrioidery floss. Vary the lengt and thickness of the threads, mix them into a variety of pulps for an endless range of effects.
Colelct a whole range of metallic sparkles to bring pizazz to your homemade papers. You need only a small amount to brighten them up. You can see the results of certain sparkles combined with particular pulp types and colors you will discover many more combinations as you experiment at home.

All of the paper pulps can be mixed together with fabric dyes to create new colors.
Follow the manufacturers instructions when dilluting fabric dye with water. For full strength color use the ration ssuggested by manufacturer.
One of the many intriguing qualities of making your own paper is the potential you have to produce hundreds of textured surfaces.
Using everyday items from around the home and in the workshop, you can design amazing wall hangings, matting for artwork or photography and much more. Toweling and other textured fabrics will give your paper distinct surfaces, esspecially if the sheet is couched directly onto the fabric and allowed to air dry under the pressure of a weight.
You can choose to make just one textured sheet or several at a time. Just dont fear to go through the process of trial and error. You might tear a lot of papers but you will be satisfied with your results.
A brick placed on a board will provide a simple weight to emboss a design on a single sheet.
