Create a Home Office That Works Although a growing number of businesses are reopening their in-person office spaces, many are maintaining remote workforces or implementing hybrid schedules. While the shift signals steps toward more traditional, familiar work environments, it also presents some challenges. If your temporary remote work schedule is headed for a more permanent status, or if you’ll be straddling both worlds indefinitely, it may be time to make some changes to ensure your home office is up to the task.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Before making any significant purchases, do some digging to learn all you can about the devices and equipment you’re considering, especially if you’re planning to create an efficient setup using smart technology. While many devices work well together, that’s not always the case. You should also be aware of the controls and how you’ll manage smart functions; choose the setup that’s most intuitive for you and fits best with your workflow.

IDENTIFY UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS

A successful home office needs to reflect the needs of your particular job, so you may need special equipment or tools specific to your role. For example, 63% of desk-based workers said having to collaborate with colleagues virtually is either a challenge or major barrier to working remotely, with 24% saying it is a major barrier, according to a survey by HP. If your job typically relies heavily on collaboration, you’ll probably need a video conference setup. Another common challenge: access to a printer. More than one-fourth of desk-based workers ranked having access to the office printer among the top three things they miss about the in-office experience. If your home office isn’t already equipped with a printer or you need to upgrade, you may be wondering where to start. Convenience is more important than everything else in a home printer, according to survey participants. You may also agree with the 52% of remote workers who

indicated that if they were considering buying a new home printer in the future, it must be easy to use, and a simple set-up process was a leading demand. One convenient and simple option is the HP+ smart printing system, which is powered by a cloud-based ecosystem with enhanced security, productivity and sustainability features. Paired with an optional Instant Ink automated supplies replenishment subscription, an environmentally friendly solution to ensure you never run out of ink or toner, the system offers a perfect solution for hybrid workers and small businesses.

START SMALL

Establishing a well-equipped home office takes time and money. Identify the equipment and essentials you need to get started then create a wish list with other items you can add over time. As you’re setting priorities, remember it can pay to invest in quality products from the get-go. If you have to make repairs, or upgrade or replacement equipment, you may actually spend more in the long run.

GET A STRONG NETWORK

At the office, you probably had an IT department responsible for keeping your network up and running. At home, you may still have some level of tech support, but your home connectivity is likely your own concern. A good network starts with a quality router. You’ll also want to shop for an internet provider with the best speeds at a rate you can afford. Just be conscious of any restrictions on volume or speed that could hinder your ability to do your job.

KEEP SECURITY IN MIND

Smart devices collect a lot of information and because much of the technology is still so new, it’s relatively vulnerable to hackers. Get familiar with privacy settings on all your devices and adjust accordingly so you’re not divulging proprietary data or other information that could be used inappropriately. Learn how to make your home office work for you at hp.com.

Tips for Finding the Right Printer FEATURES: A basic printer simply prints

documents, but if you need to also copy, scan and fax, there are many all-in-one models that offer those capabilities, as well.

INKJET VS. LASER: If you normally print

text with few images, opt for a laser printer. If your work involves a lot of graphics and photos, an inkjet printer may be a better choice.

SUPPLIES: Depending on how much you print, you may go through a lot of ink, and the cost can add up. Comparison shop to find the best ink prices, which brands offer features like recycling for used cartridges and whether you can access a subscription to ensure you never run out of ink or paper before a big deadline. CORD CONNECTIONS: Some printers require a wired connection to your computer while others can connect to

your computer using Wi-Fi or an app like HP Smart App. Aside from personal preference, your decision may hinge on the space you have available.

Clear the Bathroom Clutter

Due to their small size and heavy usage, bathrooms can become messy, cluttered areas for many families. For those with smaller bathrooms, storage solutions can be even harder to find. Consider these organization tips to make your bathroom a clean and functional space for every member of the family:

8 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

ASSESS THE MESS: Go through all the cabinets and drawers to clear out unused makeup, health care products and medications. Make sure the items you keep are used on a regular basis. Items used sparingly should be placed in an alternate location.

HANG UP IN STYLE: Old coat racks and ladders make

perfect solutions for larger families to hang multiple towels. Snag an old one from a thrift store and paint it a bright hue, like red or turquoise, for a stylish bathroom accent piece.

AVOID SPILLS AND SQUIRTS: Hair products, such as

gels, mousses or hairsprays, can create sticky, tough-to-clean messes if liquid escapes the container in a drawer or cabinet. Avoid such mishaps by placing these types of items in plastic tubs instead of directly in the drawer or on a shelf.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER: Bathroom drawers can become

unruly if not organized. To keep items separate and tidy, insert dividers, such as those used for kitchen utensils. These often come in fun materials, such as bamboo or stainless steel, to add a fresh look.

ASSIGN CABINETS OR DRAWERS: Try to use a large

enough cabinet so each member of the family has his or her own space or drawer. This can help limit the amount of items high-maintenance family members can bring into the small area. Plus, it makes it easier for everyone to find their things.

‘ Reduce Your Energy Bills This Fall with These Tips The updates you make in fall can prepare your home for the long winter months ahead, helping you stay more comfortable all season while reducing your energy bills and other expenditures. Here are some home improvements to consider, as well as tips and insights for making the most of these upgrades:

an average home, that’s like having one side of your home with no insulation at all! Check out siding that provides continuous insulation, such as CedarMAX insulated vinyl siding from ProVia, which is not only one of the most energy-efficient exterior claddings on the market, but offers enhanced curb appeal and durability.

Wherever you live, make sure the windows and sliding patio doors have been independently tested to meet strict EPA energy efficiency standards, and check to see that the windows are ENERGY STAR Certified. The ecoLite, Aspect, Endure and Aeris lines from ProVia all offer comfort and energy efficiency, as well as optional upgrades that can help make an additional dent in your energy bill or add aesthetic appeal. Some lines come standard with ComforTech Warm Edge Glazing, a high-tech glass package that measurably improves thermal performance for less heat loss, warmer glass temperatures and reduced interior condensation. Finally, be sure any new products are delivering their full value with a proper installation that eliminates drafts.

PASS IT ON Environmental stewardship is a valuable lesson to impart to the next generation. While you make energy-saving updates to your home, consider checking out free resources that can help your children understand why this matters. For example, the “Sammy the Star” ENERGY STAR Educational Program, found at provia.com/energy-star, teaches children about the importance of saving energy. Energy savings and environmental protection go hand-in-hand. This fall, consider home upgrades that prioritize both.

TopTips for Homeowners to Prep Financially for Natural Disasters Climate change is making natural disasters more extreme, from extending the duration of disaster seasons to increasing the intensity of fires, storms and floods. Indeed, the U.S. Geological Survey notes that with increasing global surface temperatures, the intensity of storms will likely increase. The agency also predicts coastal flooding to double in the coming decades. Health and safety are first priorities after a disaster, but financial resilience is critical too. If you’re a homeowner -- or a prospective homeowner -- here’s how you can get prepared:

COMPILE DOCUMENTS Assemble important

financial documents. Store paper copies of all files in a fireproof and waterproof box or safe, or in a bank safe deposit box. Consider making digital copies for easy accessibility. Store these in a password-protected format on a removable flash or external hard drive, in your fireproof and waterproof box or safe, in a bank safe deposit box, or with a secure cloud-based service.

UNDERSTAND YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE

Having adequate insurance will ensure protection in times of need. The extent of your coverage will depend on where you live and what types of disasters your location may be at risk for. Review your policy annually and make changes or additions as needed.

UPDATE DOCUMENTS Regularly revisit and update documents, particularly if you have significant changes in your life, such as marriage, death or the birth of a child.

START SAVING If you’re able, start saving today.

Having an emergency budget allows you to react quickly if you’re affected by a disaster. Plus, households that have an emergency savings account tend to fare better overall.

GO ELECTRONIC If you depend on regular benefits

such as Social Security, consider switching to electronic benefits to protect yourself should mail service be disrupted during a disaster.

KNOW THE PLANS Stay up-to-date with the

emergency plans in your community, children’s schools and place of work. Make a communications plan for your own household and share it with all the members of your family.

SEEK DISASTER RELIEF If your home has been

impacted by a natural disaster, contact your loan servicer right away. Your loan servicer may be able to extend a full range of relief options, including: suspending foreclosures by providing forbearance on your mortgage payments for up to 12 months, waiving assessments of penalties or late fees, and not reporting delinquencies to the nation’s credit bureaus. About one month before the end of your forbearance period, contact your mortgage company to determine the most appropriate option for re-establishing your mortgage payments.

BECOME A SAVVY HOMEOWNER Familiarize yourself with how to prepare your home for natural disasters and extreme weather, as well as where to find resources to help recover if disaster strikes. Freddie Mac’s My Home website has a comprehensive suite of tools and resources about homeownership, including details on support options if you are struggling to make your mortgage payments, at myhome.freddiemac.com/getting-help. Natural disasters can strike at any time and with little warning. However, proper preparation can help you weather the storm.

Tips to Save Time, Money and Energy in the Kitchen family features

As the country reopens, family schedules are inching toward their pre-lockdown levels of busyness. Sports, extracurricular activities, school, work and social commitments all leave families looking for ways to save time, money and energy in the kitchen. Make your family mealtime more efficient and enjoyable with these tips:

nutritious, well-rounded meals instead of making lastminute decisions that often include less healthy choices. When you plan a week at a time, you can take into account how to use ingredients across multiple meals to save money and preparation time. When planning out meals, keep in mind that leftovers from a protein main dish can be repurposed to top an entree salad or incorporated into a pasta or casserole dish later in the week.

PLAN MEALS IN ADVANCE

SHOP SMARTER

Scheduling meals eliminates the stress of pulling something together at the last minute or wasting precious time figuring out what you have on hand to make. Planning ahead can also help ensure you’re preparing

20 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

Limiting your meal prep time can actually start at the store if you shop for budget-friendly prepared ingredients that do some of the work for you. You can find side dishes that are ready to heat and serve, along with shortcuts like

For example, the Sweet Teriyaki Seasoned Pork Loin Filets let you create dishes with international flair while options like the Garlic & Parmesan or Steakhouse Seasoned Pork Loin Filets are versatile enough for a wide range of meals on busy weeknights.

FIND EASY YET ENJOYABLE RECIPES

Prepared ingredients are also an easy way to get out of a mealtime rut and explore new recipes or a style of cuisine that might be unfamiliar to your family. All the seasonings are already perfectly blended, so you can skip the guesswork and be confident your dish will turn out as expected. Recipes that involve ready-to-make ingredients are also typically budgetfriendly since you don’t have to invest in seasonings and spices separately. Fewer ingredients also typically add up to more efficient preparation and less time in the kitchen.

RECRUIT HELP

Rather than asking one family member to shoulder meal preparation responsibilities alone, delegate age-appropriate tasks to the rest of your family. Even the littlest members of the household can help with jobs like setting the table. Older kids can assist with meal prep and getting drinks ready. If cooperation is lacking, consider creating contests to have the kids racing to complete their tasks first. Even if your time around the table is brief, bringing the family together in the kitchen can help maximize your quality time together.

LIMIT CLEANUP TIME

meats that come marinated and require minimal preparation to assemble a meal. Affordable and time-saving options like Tyson Seasoned & Marinated Proteins are already seasoned and marinated so you can skip trimming and prepping the meat and get straight to cooking.

Shop for ingredients that can be used in numerous timesaving ways and think in terms of the entire meal preparation process, including cleanup. For example, versatile Tyson Seasoned & Marinated Proteins can be cooked using quick-prep appliances like an air fryer or with a grill that requires minimal cleaning after you’re done cooking. You can also choose simple recipes and one-dish meals to cut down on dirty dishes. Stir-fry, stews and sheet pan meals are all options that help limit the amount of time you have to spend cleaning up when dinner is over. 4 TIPS TO PREPARE A PET-FRIENDLY FIRE SAFETY PLAN After more than a year of nearly constant companionship, many pet parents are preparing to leave their pets at home while they transition back to the office. With more time away from home, it's important for families to be prepared in the event of a fire. As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, a vast majority of pet owners (91%) said they will leave pets home alone more often, according to a survey commissioned by Kidde and conducted online by The Harris Poll. Of those, more than 1 in 3 (35%) said they are nervous about doing so. According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, 500,000 pets suffer from smoke inhalation and 40,000 die due to home fires. "We know people will do anything to keep their furry family safe," said Sharon Cooksey, fire safety educator for Kidde. "We're committed to ensuring pet owners are equipped with the right products, resources, tools and confidence to prepare their family members - both twoand four-legged - in the event of an emergency as we transition to more time out of the home." To help protect your pets from the dangers of home fires and train them to respond positively to the sound of smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, consider these tips from Kidde. Include pets in fire escape plans: Pets should always be included in a family's evacuation plan. Stay aware of their typical hiding spots or locations where they often nap in case you must evacuate quickly. When you are not home, keep pets in areas near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.

22 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

Train pets to appropriately respond to alarms. In the event of an emergency, ensure your pets are familiar with the sound of smoke alarms. According to celebrity pet trainer Sara Carson, you should pair the sound with a command that instructs your pets to proceed "outside" or whichever term you use to identify the best way for them to exit the home. As you practice the routine, reward your pets for positive responses. "As a proud' dog mom of five super collies, I know pets are like our family, so it's important we take proactive steps to keep them safe in the event of a home fire," Carson said. "To successfully train your pets, make sure you keep training fun, short and always end on a good note." For a full demonstration on how to train your pet to respond positively to a smoke alarm, visit kidde.com/ petsafety. Use window clings to alert first responders: In an emergency, first responders need to be able to quickly assess the number of pets in a home. Consider attaching a non-adhesive decal to a window near your front door to let rescuers know how many animals are inside. Maintain smoke alarms: Smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years. In addition to testing alarms once each week, check the manufacturing date on your alarms to make sure they are current. If they are older than 10 years, it's time to replace them.

Home Improvement Wave Sweeps the Country: 4 WAYS to Catch It With more Americans working remotely, the pandemic has sparked an unprecedented wave of home improvement projects, with three out of four homeowners reporting having completed a major upgrade since the start of 2020. People are spending more time in their homes and are thinking differently about how every available space can help them live, work and play at home. Looking for a project? Here are some spaces worth considering:

1) THE GARAGE: More than just a place to park your car, the

garage is home to your tools, sports equipment and toys. And, for most (47.5 million Americans), a bustling passageway to the home. Smarten up your garage with the Chamberlain Secure View Smart Garage Door Opener with Camera and ensure your family and prized possessions are safe and secure. The Secure View works with the myQ app so you never have to worry if the garage door was left open. You can check the status of your garage door, plus open and close the garage door from your smartphone - no matter where you are. The built-in camera enables live video streaming and two-way communication so you can see when the kids get home from school or tell your neighbor where to find the ladder, even when you're not home. Make your garage work for you.

24 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

2) OUTDOOR SPACE: Spending time outside comes with an abundance of mental and physical health benefits and has been linked to reducing stress and boosting overall immune system health. By adding a functional, beautiful outdoor living space to your yard, you can take advantage of nature and all its perks whenever you want. Refreshed landscaping, a patio upgrade, a firepit area and even an outdoor kitchen can help transform your yard into your own personal oasis and improve your quality of life at home. If you're one of the 70 million households with a pet, you might want to take them into consideration when thinking about your outdoor space. Pet-friendly plants, sturdy grass and dog toys can help your pet feel at home. Add a water station or fun water feature so your pet can hydrate and cool off after playing. 3) THE DOGGIE DOOR: Don't overlook other home upgrades that benefit man's best friend. As COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift, many dogs will experience a dramatic change in their routines. For the overwhelming number of dog parents who feel guilty leaving their best buddies at home (80%), the myQ Pet Portal is a smart home pupgrade. It is a solution for homeowners who want to enhance the exterior appearance of their home while providing the four-legged member of the family with the freedom to potty and play on demand. Designed with security and pet safety in mind, this aesthetically pleasing smart doggie door allows pet parents to safely let their pup out to potty and play when they're away and have access to pets via smartphone. 4) THE LAUNDRY ROOM: The average American family does

8-10 loads of laundry a week. Like it or not, you probably spend a lot of time in your laundry area. Updating this space can be easy and budget friendly. Consider installing items that will help you work more efficiently and make use of the existing space such as a utility sink, drying racks and storage. Homeowners with a front-loading washer and dryer can make use of the space on top by adding a butcher block to create a folding station. If you have a basement, garage or detached laundry area, consider adding white paint to the walls and ceiling to brighten up the space.

WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO SCHEDULE THAT CHECK-UP OR SCREENING

If you haven’t visited your physician since the start of the pandemic, medical experts say that the time is now to book check-ups and screenings for the entire family.

Prevention is the best cure, so it’s important to get your health back on track today,” says Gerald E. Harmon, M.D., American Medical Association (AMA) president.

“The pandemic has had wide-scale negative health consequences beyond COVID-19. Many Americans have delayed important routine health services critical to keeping them healthy, including vital pediatric immunizations and preventive cancer screenings.

With school beginning and the cool weather months ahead, the AMA urges Americans to call their physician’s office to learn if they are due for preventive care or screenings.

Whether your game day celebrations call for a full-blown parking lot party or homegating with your closest friends, the nibbles and noshes you serve set the stage. Building your menu with crowd-pleasing classics – including one tried-and-true favorite that offers a fresh, veggie-forward taste: chilled salsa – makes your guests cheer for more than just the home team.

score big with a salsa-based dip

Healthy game day snacks are important to almost half (48%) of tailgaters and 18% said they’d consider leaving a party if salsa wasn’t served, according to the “Game Day Eats Report” survey from refrigerated salsa brand Fresh Cravings. With its low calorie count packed with high flavor, salsa supports healthconscious goals. Made with ingredients like fresh tomatoes, crisp vegetables, zesty peppers and more, the authentic taste of chilled salsa is a universal favorite among fans. With a belief that plant-based foods should contain wholesome ingredients and bold flavors worth celebrating, Fresh Cravings refrigerated salsas are available in the produce section, next to dressings and dips, in restaurant-style or chunky mild, medium and hot varieties. Chilled salsa is an affordable and vibranttasting alternative to jarred salsa, making it a key ingredient in this Mexican Pizza Dip from celebrity chef George Duran. It’s a simple crowd-pleaser you can make in less than an hour, leaving more time for pregame festivities. For more information and game day recipe ideas, visit freshcravings.com.
