Installing Bathroom Tile Like a Pro Updating the flooring can help infuse new life into tired, outdated bathrooms. For an upscale, polished look that doesn’t have to break the bank, consider installing tile flooring.

close to the center as possible. Mark additional reference lines as space allows, such as 2-foot-by-2-foot squares.

3.

Before you get started, you’ll want to make some decisions about the look and feel of your flooring:

Do a test run with your chosen tile by laying it out on the floor. There are color variations in most tile patterns, so you’ll want to verify each tile blends well with the next.

Ceramic or stone? Weigh factors such as poros- 4. Mix tile mortar and use the thin side of a trowel to

apply mortar at a 45-degree angle. Use the combed side to spread evenly and return excess mortar to the bucket. Remember to apply mortar in small areas, working as you go, so it doesn’t dry before you’re ready to lay the tile.

Complement or contrast? Define the overall style you want as well as the colors and tones that will help best achieve your vision.

Big or small?

Generally, the larger the tile, the fewer grout lines, and too many grout lines in a smaller space can create the illusion of clutter. However, smaller tiles can eliminate the need to make multiple awkward cuts, and small tiles are perfect for creating accent patterns or introducing a splash of color.

5. 6. 7.

When you’ve got your overall look and materials selected, keep these steps in mind as you begin laying the flooring:

8.

1.

9.

Prepare your subfloor. Use a level to check for uneven spots; you need an even surface to prevent cracks in the tile or grout as well as rough spots that could pose tripping hazards. Use patching and leveling material to create a consistent surface. Apply a thin layer of mortar then attach your cement backer board with screws. Cover joints with cement board tape, apply another thin layer of mortar, smooth and allow to dry.

2.

To ensure square placement, draw reference lines on the subfloor using a level and carpenter square. Tile should start in the middle of the room and move out toward the walls, so make your initial reference lines as

When laying tile, use your reference lines as guides. Press and wiggle tile slightly for the best adherence. Use spacers to create even lines between one tile and the next, removing excess mortar with a damp sponge or rag. As you complete a section of tile, use a level and mallet to verify the tiles are sitting evenly. Let mortar dry 24 hours before grouting. Remove spacers then apply grout to joints, removing excess as you go.

10. 11.

Allow grout to dry per the manufacturer’s instructions then go back over tile with a damp sponge to set grout lines and clean grout residue. Once grout has cured – usually at least a couple weeks – apply sealer to protect it.

What to Expect in Travel in 2022 After a couple abnormal years, many families are eager and ready to travel together again, and there are indications some pandemic-influenced travel behaviors will persist in 2022.

Consider these 2022 trends spotted by the travel experts at Vrbo:

Up-and-Coming Destinations

For example, remote work and virtual school allowed families to travel and combine work and vacation time into “flexcation” getaways, a trend that will continue, according to the 2022 Vrbo Trend Report.

Spots in Ohio, New York and Alaska saw double vacation rental demand over the past year. Within driving distance of major Midwest metros like Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville, Cincinnati was the year’s top emerging destination.

In addition to the 44% of families that said they’re more likely to work remotely from a place that’s not their home, extended stays are also on the rise. The vacation home site and app has seen a 68% increase in demand for 3-4week stays over the past year.

Other up-and-comers include Niagara Falls, a popular choice for those who wanted to experience life at the border. Yorktown, Virginia, the location of the last Revolutionary War battle, allows history buffs to witness a battle reenactment. Adventurous travelers trekked

Kids Call the Shots

After being cooped up at home, it may be no surprise parents are letting their kids have a bigger say in vacation planning. Compared to pre-pandemic times, half of the families surveyed said they’re more likely to let their kids decide where they vacation and 43% of parents are more likely to let their kids skip school for vacation.

Traveling with the Pack

Many families adopted pandemic pets because they had more time at home to spend with their furry friends. Now more people are bringing Fido and Fluffy along on vacation; 68% of pet parents have traveled, plan to travel or would like to travel with their pets. What’s more, there has been a 40% increase in demand year-over-year for pet-friendly vacation homes. to Matanuska-Susitna, Alaska, to enjoy the wilderness of Denali National Park and Preserve, breathtaking glaciers and surrounding mountains.

Chalet All Day

You may have heard of Cabincore and Cottagecore, but chalets are a trending aesthetic that inspires family travel. Chalets saw a nearly 85% increase in demand year over year. Located on lakefronts or nestled in the woods, these charming and idyllic properties are desirable lodging options for many families.

Early Bird Bookers

If 2021 was any indication, families will continue booking their vacations further in advance. Booking activity occurred an average of 2-3 months earlier than usual for several major travel seasons. Families booked summer travel in February, holiday trips in July and snowbirds got a head start on booking warm weather stays for 2022. In fact, 60% of survey respondents said they plan to book their vacations earlier than they did in pre-pandemic times with nearly half making plans 3-5 months in advance. On-Trend Home Designs for 2022 A home design that blends multiple elements seamlessly can be both inviting and visually interesting. If you’re planning to upgrade your living space in 2022, consider incorporating materials like stone and brick, which bring color, texture and functionality while complementing some of this year’s leading design trends. Settling on a design aesthetic is the first step for most renovation projects, but it can be a challenge for many homeowners. If you’re in need of inspir-ation for a project on the horizon, consider these 2022 trends from the design experts at Glen-Gery:

Warm Colors

Look for a shift toward warmer colors like beige, tan, caramel, cocoa and even black. Designers are moving from cool grays to a warmer coffee-inspired palette. The use of warmer colors on structural elements of a home,

8 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

like brick, stone, siding, doors and shutters, offer visual warmth while making a statement.

Textures and Patterns

Textures and patterns are popping up in many on-trend designs. Texture can enhance the overall feeling of a space by offering depth and complexity that draws a visitor into the room. The use of texture in a design element, like stone or brick, can provide visual interest and engage the mind with a tactile response that encourages interaction with the environment.

Outdoor Inspiration

Nature is inspiring an array of design elements this year. You may see this trend emerging through increased use of glass for light and views of nature, as well as continued focus on the versatile and transitional indoor-outdoor spaces that gained momentum during the height of

the pandemic. Approaches may vary depending on the homeowner’s style and climate, but examples include larger patios in brick and stone, as well as more functional private patios and porches. Another aspect of this trend is the tendency for homeowners to integrate in-door conveniences such as kitchens, fireplaces, furniture and electronics into their outdoor spaces.

Clean Lines

This season, designers are creating inviting, comfortable and serene spaces with modern vibes through the use of clean lines in design, materials and furnishings. One trick is integrating elements that transfer light or give an illusion of illumination from a higher sheen, such as glass brick. The play of light and shadows simultaneously blends inspiration from nature with sleek lines and dramatic focal points to evoke a sense of balanced calm and strength. This approach can also come to life through ceiling windows, furnishings and the use of stone, brick and wood on statement walls or accents. For more on-trend design ideas for your home, visit glengery.com.

Bringing On-Trend Design into Your Home Brick is a versatile design material that fits virtually any trending design. From handmade to glazed bricks and nearly everything in between, you can find building products in a diverse array of colors, textures and sizes to emphasize focal points and capture your target design aesthetic. Brick carries a sense of tradition, character and timelessness while also serving as a popular choice for homeowners due to its design flexibility. With benchmark qualities such as low maintenance, resilience, durability, sustainability and beauty, brick can help homeowners balance function with appearance. When looking for brick, consider a quality and reputable option like Glen-Gery, which offers an extensive line of more than 600 brick and stone products that provide nearly endless design possibilities and timeless beauty. The brickmaker’s collections feature an assortment of both traditional and modern products to unique international items sourced from around the globe that evoke beauty, elegance and creativity. 7 Tips for Selecting a Remodeler When planning a potential home remodeling project, the list of decisions to make may feel nearly endless. Ultimately, you may find the most important decision is choosing a trustworthy team of professionals to complete the job. For example, an organization like the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) provides homeowners with helpful ways to find qualified, professional remodelers and contractors. These seven tips can help guide you through the selection process and assist you in making an informed decision that best suits your needs.

1. Look Local

Local remodelers have a vested interest to perform quality work that satisfies their customers in order for their

12 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

business to survive. That’s why word-of-mouth referrals can be especially helpful in finding options near you. Ask relatives, friends, neighbors and business colleagues who live nearby about projects they’ve completed and the professionals they’ve used. Other resources may include people you know in the local home industry, such as lenders, real estate agents and material suppliers.

2. Follow Building Codes

Another advantage to hiring a local professional is he or she typically knows and understands the local building codes and permit requirements for your town or city. Building codes can vary considerably from each jurisdiction and are known to change from year to year. Most structural work or footprint expansions require permits.

‘‘

That’s why word-of-mouth referrals can be especially helpful in finding options near you. Ask relatives, friends, neighbors and business colleagues who live nearby about projects they’ve completed and the professionals they’ve used.

‘‘

3. Check for Licenses and Insurance

Many states, but not all, require contractors to be licensed, bonded and insured. Contact your state or local licensing agencies to ensure the contractor you’re considering meets all requirements. Most states require a contractor to carry worker’s compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance. Ask for copies of their licenses and insurance to make sure it is current.

4. Check for Violations and Complaints

Check with your Consumer Affairs Office and your local chapter of the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no complaints on record for the contractors you’re considering. You can also search for reviews online and verify they are members of reputable trade organizations that promote professional excellence, such as NARI.

5. Compare Apples with Apples

If you solicit estimates from more than one contractor, be sure they are working off the same scope and quality of work. Discuss variations in prices and beware of any estimate that is substantially lower than the others.

6. Be Informed

A good remodeling professional educates clients on green remodeling, universal design, lead safety, new products, building techniques and trends. Make sure you’re hiring someone who has knowledge and expertise relevant to the remodeling industry, as well as the appropriate certifications and experience to complete the job.

7. Check References

Don’t rely on a contractor’s personality or demeanor. If a professional does not offer references, ask for them and follow up with a site visit or phone call. Find a qualified and reputable remodeler in your area at RemodelingDoneRight.com.

Improve Your Home and It's Value

6 high-ROI ideas to increase the value of your house Home upgrades happen for different reasons but enhancing your home’s curb appeal and value are often at the top of the list. These projects can make it easier to enjoy your home knowing they carry a return on investment of up to 92%, according to the Remodeling 2021 Cost vs. Value Report published in “Remodeling Magazine.” Plus, you’ll have the added benefit of knowing you’re making a sound investment should you decide to sell down the road.

With the variety of styles and colors available, it’s easy for homeowners to mix and match to create a custom look. Mortarless options like ClipStone are designed to be installed with screws and common tools, making them accessible options for both professionals and DIYers. With a built-in water management system, overlapping edges to minimize gaps, reversible outside corners and a variety of accessories, mortarless options allow homeowners to achieve the look of traditional masonry without the hassle.

Stone Veneer

Garage Doors

Stone veneer is an upgrade that adds warmth and texture with the look of natural stone, but without the expense. It’s also a durable product that is low maintenance, so you don’t have to worry about sealing or painting.

Exterior features often bring a big return on investment because a home with strong curb appeal can make a great first impression on potential buyers. The garage doors are no exception. If you think of your garage

enhance curb appeal, upgraded windows play a major role in energy conservation. Homeowners also rely on windows to make a bold statement. For example, Simonton black exterior windows and patio doors can help perfect a wide range of architectural styles including farmhouse, modern, industrial and contemporary designs. This award-winning line of vinyl windows offers homeowners a variety of styles and colors to customize both their home’s interior and exterior spaces. The windows are AAMA Gold Certified, passing some of the industry’s most stringent quality assurance testing for air leakage, water penetration and wind pressure – resulting in low-maintenance windows with lasting durability, weather resistance and energy efficiency.

Deck Additions

Adding a deck is an easy way to improve your home’s exterior appeal and increase your livable space. Wooden decks rank in the top 10 for ROI, according to the report. An attractive deck situated off the living room or kitchen can make those rooms feel larger, especially when you’re entertaining, and guests can circulate freely between indoor and outdoor spaces. A well-constructed deck also serves as a transition point from the home to the backyard, where you may invest in even more outdoor living features. You’ll achieve the greatest ROI by designing your deck to integrate seamlessly with your home and landscaping and even stone accents. Also take functional features into consideration, including privacy and protection from the wind and sun. Depending on your climate, it may be beneficial to design a deck for maximum shade during the warm months or to make the most of sunlight during the cool seasons. Features like built-in kitchens, stone accents, TV mounts and access to water features all lend high-end custom touches that also boost ROI.

doors as a purely functional element of your home, you may be surprised to learn garage door replacement is actually the best home upgrade you can make, according to the report. Garage doors aren’t just functional; they can be a focal point of your home’s exterior design, completely transforming the exterior. Depending on the style and features you choose, an updated garage door is also a smart strategy for managing climate and adding security to your home.

Windows

Windows are another smart investment for numerous reasons. Not only do they provide a sophisticated presence that can greatly

to s y a W g in h tc a -C e y E 5 Update Your Home Your home is a reflection of you, and your decor should match your tastes. With some simple home upgrades, you can create the perfect space for you and your family, even if your design preferences change over time. “When we’re designing our ideal home, too often we may only think about what we want others to see and enjoy when they visit,” said Jack Goldman, president and CEO of the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA). “The reality is visitors account for less than 1% of your in-home time.”

Consider these ideas to get started: Add a Fresh Coat of Paint

One of the easiest home improvement projects, a fresh coat of paint can change the entire look of a room. Whether you choose to paint the entire space one new color, opt for an accent wall in a vibrant shade or simply freshen up the trim, paint can go a long way toward adding visual appeal and reflecting your personality. Patterned wallpaper, board and batten, stone and tile can also be added to create textured accents.

Bring Warmth and Ambience with a Fireplace

“A fireplace is for you and your family, a personal addition that serves you and your household in more ways than you may realize,” Goldman said. “October is National Fireplace Month, a time to celebrate the warmth, comfort and ambiance a fireplace or stove can bring to a home.” More than 3 in 5 homeowners have a fireplace or other hearth product in their homes, according to the HPBA, and including a fireplace in your construction or renovation plans is a gift of warmth, comfort and ambiance you can give yourself. Whether it’s a centerpiece for your living room or family room, or an accent to your bedroom,

bathroom or study, a fireplace can provide an artful design element for your home and a safe, reliable heat source in the event of unexpected weather.

Update Lighting Fixtures

Proper lighting can bring rooms to life and make spaces look larger and more welcoming. You can brighten up your home in a variety of ways, from strategically placing table and floor lamps that fit your design style to replacing older ceiling and wall-mounted fixtures with more modern styles.

Give Cabinetry a Fresh Look

There are numerous easy ways to update your kitchen and bathroom cabinets to create a more updated look. One of the easiest is swapping out older cabinet pulls and knobs for more modern options. With a variety of finishes – stainless, bronze, brushed nickel, black, copper and more – and styles available, you can match your cabinets to nearly any design style in a matter of minutes. Adding a coat of stain or paint is also a relatively quick and easy way to update some of the most-used spaces in your home without completely replacing the cabinets.

Upcycle Furniture

You can breathe new life into your current furniture by making simple changes. The easiest would be simply rearranging your pieces and moving some to different rooms to create an updated look. You can also add decorative covers to sofas, chairs, throw pillows and more, or take your upcycling a step further and refinish a bookshelf, table or other wooden furniture with a fresh coat of paint or stain, or give it a more weathered look with some sandpaper. How to Improve Your Financial Health

Your financial health is just as important as your physical and mental health. Money affects almost every aspect of your life and can be the determining factor in many of your day-to-day decisions. Being financially healthy isn’t just about how much money you have in the bank. It also encompasses your financial capability and how you feel about money or how money makes you feel. Start by doing a self-check to determine your financial health. Look at where your accounts currently stand, including the statuses and balances. The balances in your accounts can be used to calculate your net worth, which is a numerical indicator of your overall financial health from an accounting standpoint.

Money stories involve emotions, beliefs and experiences with money from childhood to adulthood. If you need a more personalized approach to developing a better relationship with your finances, explore working with a financial coach. Support Small Business

6 ways to help businesses in your community thrive Small business owners faced the challenges of the past couple of years head-on. Nearly all re-evaluated their operations to accommodate new ways of doing business amid changing safety standards and local protocols, and many plan to make these changes permanent.

they remain determined and resilient,” said Carol Lee Mitchell, head of small business strategy at Bank of America. “Even as they faced immense obstacles, AAPI business owners took steps to move their businesses and communities forward.”

Over the past year, pandemic-related operational chal lenges, combined with a surge in physical and verbal attacks, have been uniquely difficult for a group of small business owners.

Local companies, including AAPI businesses, have proven to be fundamental to strong, healthy economies and inclusive communities. These entrepreneurs remain solution-oriented, quickly adopting new tools and strat egies; however, they require support from customers and community members to thrive.

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) businesses comprise nearly 10% of small businesses in the United States. Among them, 92% faced difficulties keeping their businesses open and operating amid the pandemic, according to Bank of America’s 2021 AAPI Business Owner Spotlight. “While almost all AAPI entrepreneurs said the pandemic created additional stress around running their businesses,

22 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

Consider these ways you can support small businesses, including AAPI owners and the community at-large, from the experts at Bank of America:

Choose to Shop Local and Small

Small businesses are ingrained in many local communities. When you choose to purchase from a small business,

you’re directly supporting neighbors, friends and the people in your community. This support isn’t taken for granted by entrepreneurs; more than half of AAPI small business owners noted the importance of community support amid the pandemic. Also consider leaving a generous tip when you receive exceptional service – it can make a big difference for small business staff.

media channels. Take it a step further and give them a shoutout (with tags, if possible) on your own social media accounts where your friends and family are more likely to notice.

Help Fill Open Positions

The job market has shifted noticeably over the past year, and local businesses have been struggling to find the talent they need to continue to serve their communities. Small business owners recognize this and are shifting benefits for their employees, allowing for more flexible schedules and additional paid time off. Since these business owners are looking for employees to help fill some of the uptick in demand, you can help by tapping into your own network and recommending people for different positions you see, whether it be through “Help Wanted” signs or based on the needs you hear from the businesses you patronize.

Be Mindful of Business Challenges

Gift Local

Keep the impact that your support could have on local community businesses in mind when shopping for gifts, whether they’re for loved ones near or far. For locals, a gift card to a nearby eatery or business such as a spa, salon or recreation center makes for a welcome gift that keeps your money local. When gifting those who live farther away, you can still benefit small businesses in your community by purchasing a thoughtful gift and packaging locally then shipping it with the help of a business in your area.

Help Spread the Word

Small businesses don’t usually have the means to invest in big marketing programs, so referrals and word of mouth can make a major difference. However, in today’s world, a great deal of consumer research happens online. That means you can be most helpful by taking your stories of great service and quality products to the internet, too. Seek out your favorite small businesses and write reviews on their social

Finding a work-life balance can be difficult for small business owners even in non-pandemic times because they wear so many hats within their businesses, from CEO and salesperson to human resources and everything in between. Business owners were more conscious of their mental health over the past year, as nearly all AAPI business owners acknowledged additional stress and more than half set aside specific time for self-care and mental wellness. As a consumer, it’s important to be mindful of the fact that business owners are both short-staffed and dealing with supply chain issues. Take an understanding approach and work with local businesses to make sure they know they are supported by their community.

Check In on What’s New

Just as you’ve changed your consumer habits and needs, small businesses have adapted in dozens of ways. That could mean you have access to new services or options you never considered. For example, your favorite yoga studio may offer streaming classes or a favorite breakfast cafe you haven’t visited in a while might have an all-new menu. Take time to stop in and learn how your favorite businesses are changing with the times and see how those changes may suit your needs. Look for additional resources designed for small businesses at bankofamerica.com/smallbusiness.

5 Color Trends for a Stylish Home in 2022 A new year brings new opportunities to refresh your living space and add new colors into your life. These five trends are all about incorporating more of yourself and your lifestyle into your home, whether it’s answering your need for a serene escape or dialing up the energy with vibrant surroundings.

Bring in Nature

Soothing earthy tones help bring a sense of calm and balance indoors. When designing with nature in mind, use gray-green tones to connect your aesthetic with the serene elements of the outdoors. Incorporate nature’s palette with greens in fabrics, accessories and even on the walls. Wood and stone materials naturally complement these shades for a look that’s cohesively pleasing and peaceful.

Stylish Sophistication

If you’re aiming to infuse some sophistication with an

24 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

update to a favorite space, opt for a monochromatic look in a dark (almost black) hue. The approach is simultaneously bold and classic, but the secret to this trend is finding a shade that’s rich and deep, but not quite black, then complementing it with fabrics and furnishings that let the hint of color shine.

Connect with Your Inner Self

Creating a living space that is uniquely yours requires understanding your inner motivations, traits and talents. One source of personal inspiration may be your zodiac sign, a reflection of the earth’s orientation to the sun on your birthday. The color experts at Valspar partnered with Ophira and Tali Edut of the AstroTwins to make it easy to explore the intersection of your character and style by explaining

which 2022 Color of the Year best aligns with each zodiac sign. When you combine your sign with the convenience and advanced one-coat coverage of premium Valspar Reserve Interior Paint + Primer, available at Lowe’s, you can create a luxurious space that reflects the real you. • Aries – Sunset Curtains: A warm and soothing color like this supports a transformational year full of new opportunities. • Taurus – Gilded Linen: This clean, cozy color makes spaces feel open, perfect for celebrating togetherness. • Gemini – Grey Suit: This is a color of warmth and versatility, a signature combination for Geminis. • Cancer – Delightful Moon: A spirited, playful color inspires a year of growth and adventure. • Leo – Mountain River: A dark and dreamy color invites inspiration for a year filled with abundance. • Virgo – Subtle Peach: It’s the year of partnerships for Virgos; this harmonious color works well alongside others but can also stand on its own. • Libra – Orchid Ash: A cool and breezy color keeps it simple so Libras can focus on a year of vitality. • Scorpio – Fired Earth: This warm and approachable color is perfect for Scorpios who plan to bring new people into their lives this year. • Sagittarius: Rustic Oak: A relaxing and comforting color that welcomes coziness in the new year. • Capricorn – Blanched Thyme: For Capricorns, this is the year of variety, and this is a refreshing tone to support change. • Aquarius – Country Charm: This hue provides warmth and stability for a year of productivity. • Pisces – Lilac Lane: A playful pastel hue that brings softness along with optimism and renewal.

Add Comfort and Warmth

Treating your home like a sanctuary never goes out of style, and one way to create a soothing, inviting space is through the use of cozy neutrals. Whether it’s applied to a bedroom retreat or a more bustling space like the living room, a neutral palette can add to the allure of comfort and warmth. Keep the visual interest strong by incorporating subtle patterns, textures and layers of complementary neutral colors.

Go Retro

It may seem counter-intuitive, but vibrant retro shades like orange and yellow, and even warmer neutrals, can help establish a calming vibe within your home. The throwback hues can help your mind connect to moments from the past when life may have been filled with less challenges. This trend with colors like Valspar’s Delightful Moon, Subtle Peach and Sunset Curtains is less about the actual look and more about the mood it evokes for you personally, so if a retro scene takes you to a happy place, this may be the right choice for your home. Find more 2022 color trends and design inspiration at Valspar.com.

Brush on the Color Using quality brushes can provide you with a smooth, professional finish, but depending on the surface you’re painting, different sizes and types of brushes can help you achieve the desired look.

Achieving ultra-clean edges and a smooth finish is the goalfor DIY painting. Perfect for interior use with latex paints and stains, the Valspar Wall and Trim 3-Brush Multi-Pack is a convenient option that includes flat and angled brushes in multiple sizes. Those hardto-reach corners may be tricky, but a proper angled brush can make all the difference.

In 2022,Wellness Will Lead All Things Home Improvement When you think about your health, eating well, exercising regularly and getting adequate sleep likely come to mind. What you may not realize is the dramatic influence your spaces have on your overall well-being, both mentally and physically. This means for good health, you need to take a closer look at your home. With most people spending more time at home than ever before, this becomes that much more important. This realization has inspired homeowners to make thoughtful

26 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

updates that not only enhance their home, but support the wellness of the body and mind of everyone who lives there. "Our health and happiness are the most precious things that we can take care of. You couple that with your biggest investment outside of yourself, which is your home, and those two are intrinsically linked," said Erin Lilly, manager, Design Studio, Kohler.

Three big ideas are driving wellness home design in 2022: 1. Spaces have a profound impact on health. The lighting, air quality, materials, layout and countless other factors influence people on physical, mental and emotional levels. These considerations should drive a project from concept to completion. 2. Expectations for home and work have

changed dramatically over the past 18 months, thanks to the increase in remote work and hybrid schedules. Homes need to become workplaces, and now, workplaces need to become more like home.

3. Designing for well-being isn't just about the now. It's increasingly about understanding longterm needs. With more homeowners looking to age in place, homes need to stay both beautiful and usable for evolving needs. If these points resonate with you, consider how wellness design can be incorporated into your home. Wondering where to start? The kitchen and the bathroom are two primary spaces that provide ample opportunity for making improvements that not only provide an updated aesthetic, but support overall wellbeing through functionality and health-focused enhancements.

For example, a simple shower can be transformed into a multisensory space that helps you rejuvenate or relax, depending on your needs. The DTV+ digital showering system brings water, sound, steam and light together for a unique sensory experience you'll look forward to each day. Every element of your shower is completely customizable and controlled by a touch-screen interface, making it easy to set your experience for your exact needs. Another important wellness aspect of the bathroom may not be quite as glamorous as the shower, but it is equally important when it comes to your health: the toilet. Fortunately, you can easily enhance your existing toilet with a new bidet seat that helps keep you clean when it really counts. Consider the Purewash bidet seat for the ultimate in comfort and clean. Every aspect of this bidet seat was designed with hygiene in mind, including the anti-bacterial seat, anti-bacterial wand and self-cleaning nozzles, so you can feel confident in your clean every time you use the bathroom. Plus, the quiet-close seat is a nice feature, especially for evening bathroom visits. Beyond the bathroom, the kitchen is another space where wellness improvements can benefit the whole family. From stylish, ergonomic chairs to strategic lighting that features both task and ambient lights, there are many improvements that can enhance your health. One basic update that can benefit you for years to come is replacing your existing faucet with one that blends function, fashion and health. For instance, the Tone faucet has clean lines and a soft teardrop base, offering a fresh take on mid-century modern style. The touchless on/off feature limits the spread of germs, and the three-function pull-down sprayhead gives you options for any cleaning needs. Wellness and home design is poised for growth as people prioritize their health. Visit Kohler. com/Living to explore the Kohler Living sessions focused on products and perspectives that explore the meaning of well-being, look at how the built environment impacts health and offer ideas for creating spaces that support greater wellness.

These 4 Simple Choices Help Create a More Eco-Friendly Kitchen in the New Year Environmental protection is always capturing headlines, but you might wonder what you can do as an individual to make a difference at home. Do your small efforts even matter in the big picture of a greener world? The truth is every eco-minded effort counts, no matter how small it may seem. One of the best places to start is at home in your very own kitchen. Some of the simplest, most cost-effective changes can have the biggest cumulative impact in the new year.

Looking for ideas? These simple, everyday habits will help you create a greener kitchen and eco-friendly household:

Prevent Food Waste

Food waste is estimated at between 30-40% of the food supply in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Billions of pounds of food is wasted every year, often due to spoilage, which is why preserving food properly is essential. Dry goods should be sealed air tight and out of sunlight, ideally in a cool and dry location. Fresh foods can spoil, so it's important to store produce properly. Look for storage options created specifically for fresh foods to keep the proper air and moisture ratio for optimum freshness. Most produce should be stored in the fridge, but some items like bananas, pears, avocado, melons and tomatoes last longer when not refrigerated. When it comes to food waste, consider composting at home or through a curbside program, which creates a trickle-down effect that can benefit you as well as the environment. When in doubt, do your research to understand the different options.

Get Trash Bags Made with Less Plastic While reducing waste is important, you probably will still need to use trash bags in the kitchen. Research options

and find a greener bag. Glad's drawstring kitchen trash bags use less plastic than leading competitors* without sacrificing performance. Glad's ForceFlexPlus Recovered Materials Bag is the brand's most sustainable bag. They have the same trusted Glad strength you can depend on but are made with 50% recovered plastic - 20% recycled plastic, 30% reclaimed plastic - and are made with 100% renewable energy (in Glad's North American plants) and come in 100% recyclable packaging (in Glad's North American plants). Learn more at Glad.com/Sustainability. *Ranges from 7% to 22% less plastic vs. top 10 competitors

Opt for the Dishwasher

If you wash dishes by hand instead of in the dishwasher thinking you're saving water, you may be mistaken. This is particularly true if you're like most people and run the hot water for rinsing continuously as you do dishes. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, newer EnergyStar dishwasher models use 6 gallons or less per wash cycle, plus save on electricity. You can maximize savings further by only running the dishwasher when it's full.

Recycle

Last but not least, prioritize recycling throughout your day. Know what can be recycled in your area and be sure to place those items as indicated in the recycling bin rather than the trash. Unsoiled paper products can typically be recycled, as well as many glass containers, metal lids and plastic containers that have been rinsed well. Whether you live in an urban setting or far out in the country - or one of the many places in between - Mother Nature serves an important role in your life. These simple steps that you can do in your very own kitchen make a big difference.

Three Privacy Questions to Ask Before Buying a Smart Thermostat Smart home devices are everywhere. From smart speakers to kitchen appliances to thermostats, these devices are helping people live a more convenient, comfortable life. How this happens is through technology that often analyzes your habits and patterns. While there are significant advantages to using smart technology, it's important to consider: How much of your privacy are you giving up while using smart home devices? According to a report from the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC), data security and privacy remain a top concern for consumers. Nearly two-thirds of all survey respondents said they are concerned about potential data

30 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

leaks, and 45% of those who do not have a smart home device see data privacy as a barrier to purchasing. One smart home device that is growing in popularity is a smart thermostat. This is in part due to the many benefits it offers, including the ability to save money, use energy more efficiently and have a comfortable house year-round. To be most effective, a smart home device can virtually "feel" and "listen" to what is happening in your home. That's why, as you consider a smart thermostat from one of the many companies in this fast-growing market, asking a few key questions can help you better understand how they use your information.

it is possible it may still be using your thermostat data (such as when you are home or not home) for other purposes beyond heating and cooling your house.

Does the thermostat require you to integrate with a larger platform? Does the product require you to use its smart home platform or have other requirements to use the basic features of the thermostat? Activities like these often give companies easy access to your data. You should be able to easily use your thermostat without jumping through hoops.

Are they recording what you say? Some smart thermostats include a microphone so you can use your voice to interact with the thermostat. If it has a microphone, do you know how that information is being used or stored? If this is a concern for you, there are smart thermostat options without microphones available.

Selecting the right smart thermostat Smart thermostats are increasingly common in homes worldwide - and for good reason. They enable homeowners to easily control their ideal temperature and even lower their energy costs through the touch of a smartphone. The key with any smart home product is to do your research to ensure you are buying a smart thermostat that meets your needs without sacrificing your privacy.

What data are they collecting and what will they do with it? Review the company's terms of service and privacy policy carefully to understand the type of information it is collecting and how it will use it. Reputable companies should have strong consent management that puts you in the driver's seat of your own information.

Emerson, a trusted thermostat manufacturer with over a 100year history in the HVAC industry, offers one such option with its Sensi smart thermostats. Upon initial account setup, Emerson only collects basic information and is transparent in the fact that it does not sell your personal information or leverage your thermostat activity data for other targeting or advertising purposes. You don't need to trade your privacy for energy savings and a comfortable home. To learn more about smart thermostats that prioritize your data privacy, visit Sensi.Emerson.com/ DataPrivacy.

In particular, watch for how companies use your activity data. Even if a company confirms it does not share or sell your data to third parties,

Personal Defense Tips for at-Home and On-the-Go If you’re concerned about the nationwide spike in crime, you’re not alone. According to a June 2021 SafeWise survey, 41 and 42% of U.S. adults are concerned about property crime and violent crime, up 31 and 24% respectively from the previous year. “Being prepared means understanding the personal defense devices available and knowing how to use them safely,” says David Nance, founder of SABRE Personal Safety Academy and CEO of SABRE, the number one personal safety brand of consumers and law enforcement worldwide. To help you develop a safety plan and live confidently, SABRE is offering important insights into common crimes today, as well as recommendations for personal defense devices to use in various situations: •

Spray or gel? While most people are familiar with

traditional pepper sprays, they may not understand the benefits of pepper gel or even be aware of this option. As effective as traditional pepper spray when sprayed across the eyes in an ear-to-ear pattern, pepper gel deploys 20% farther, providing protection at a greater distance. Another big advantage of pepper gel is it only affects those it comes in direct contact with, making it safer for users and those they’re with, indoors and outside. According to an independent University of Utah study, variability rates in the concentration of active ingredients in pepper sprays have a 30% failure rate. Tested in its in-house laboratory, SABRE guarantees its maximum strength formulation in every gel canister, including its Crossfire Pepper Gel with Belt Clip, which can be deployed at any angle, even upside down, making it more effective against moving threats. •

When parking.

According to the FBI, more homicides happen in parking garages than at bars, motels, gas stations or in the woods combined. Be extra vigilant in garages. Keep keys handy for quick access to your car and carry additional protection. For example, SABRE Pepper Gel with Finger Grip and Key Ring attaches to keychains and provides 25 bursts of maximum strength protection at 12-foot range, helping put distance between you and would-be attackers.

In the car. In 2020, Chicago carjackings were up 134%,

according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau report. This trend continued in 2021, with the Windy City seeing a 44% increase, Washington, D.C. a 45% increase and New York an 81%

32 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

increase. Multi-use tools can make road trips and commutes safer. For example, SABRE’s Safe Escape 3-In-1 Pepper Gel with Seat Belt Cutter and Window Breaker helps aid in escape of a vehicle after an accident for protection, it’s designed to prevent accidental deployment, yet allows the user to immediately deploy in high stress situations. •

Outdoors.

Eighty-four percent of women surveyed by “Runners World” have been harassed or attacked on a run. Everyone deserves to feel safe while exercising outdoors. Consider adding the SABRE Runner Pepper Gel with Adjustable Hand Strap to your running gear. It provides immediate access to protection and reduces wind blowback, making it safer for outdoor use. A UV marking dye helps authorities identify the aggressor, so you can focus on getting to safety. Bonus: It’s reflective, increasing your visibility to drivers at night.

At home. Equip your home to be a safe

haven with pepper gel. Because it doesn’t atomize like traditional pepper sprays, pepper gel is less likely to foul indoor air. Be sure to store it in an accessible location out of children’s reach.

When it comes to safety, knowledge is key. Consider enrolling in a self-defense or martial arts course. You can also visit www.sabrered. com for educational materials and demonstration videos, and to learn more about the Civilian Safety Awareness Program and the SABRE College Safety Program. You never know when you may find yourself in a threatening situation. A personal safety plan can provide everyday peace of mind, and help put distance between you and a threat when it counts.

Have Your 2022 Resolutions Faded? 5 Tools to Jumpstart Them If it’s time to jumpstart the resolutions you made at the beginning of the year, consider these five tools to make them more attainable:

1. Mix it up.

Finding it hard to consume the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables? You’re not alone. Only one in 10 Americans do, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A highquality blender can make getting your fill of these fundamental food groups easy and delicious. For example, the Ninja, one of the more notoriously powerful machines on the market, allows you to whip up smoothies and juices using whole fruits and vegetables to ensure you extract the most nutritional benefit from each of your ingredients.

34 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com

2. Touch and go.

Learning to play music is easy and fun when you opt for an instrument designed to help you master skills, fast. Offering touch responsive keys that light up as well as a compatible app that can assist you in your learning journey, Casiotone keyboards feature tools that can keep you motivated to continue expanding your knowledge.

3. Walk it off. Stay in shape using wearable tech

that will encourage you to keep setting bigger and bolder goals. The G-Shock, a smartwatch with a step tracker, uses a three-axis acceleration sensor that begins counting steps the moment you start to walk. This data can help motivate

you to increase your daily step count and meet the recommended 10,000 steps per day. With some models offering heart rate monitoring and training analysis, you’ll soon be well on your way to keeping your promise to make the most of your resolutions.

4. Sleep tight. If getting more sleep was on your

2022 to-do list but you’re finding it difficult to actually put this goal into action, use an app such as Sleep Cycle to improve your nocturnal habits. Its sound library will ease you into sleep. It also tracks you over night and presents a deep-dive analysis into the quality of your shut-eye, along with guidance for changing your routine where needed.

5. Rainy-day prep. Make this the year

you finally create a budget that allows you to save for the future. With a reliable printing calculator, you can print out and attach financial planning documents to show the progress of your savings and keep an organized log of monthly income and expenses. For this purpose, consider the HR-170RC from Casio, a mini desktop printing calculator with a big easyto-read display, two-color printing and the ability to check and correct up to 150 steps. Creating new habits is never easy. To help you stick the landing on all your goals, turn to tools that are designed to help.
