Healing Home Design How to infuse living spaces with color that feeds the soul APPLIANCES
In the past, appliances were meant to blend into the decor to be less obvious, albeit essential, elements of a kitchen. A more contemporary approach: vibrant appliances that get noticed. You can find major appliances in a wide range of colors, but if you’re not sure about going that big and bold, many smaller countertop appliances, such as stand mixers and toasters, come in a range of colorful options, too.
ARCHITECTURE
When contemplating where and how to apply color to a space, avoid boxing in your options. Think beyond the traditional wall space when you’re planning ways to change the color in a space; be thoughtful with color and highlight architectural details to elevate the interest and charm in your home. Take a 360-degree immersive color approach, painting the same shade from floor to ceiling and all around to create a mood-boosting lift to a room.
4 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com
To infuse more color and boldness into your space, consider a timeless and elegant shade of red, like HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 Color of the Year. This paint color, “Passionate,” is a deeply saturated hue that is daringly rich and invigorates the senses. This bold and empowering red is steeped in history, merging modern design with traditional charm.
FURNITURE
Whether you’re into project pieces you can transform into something new or simply shopping for furnishings that complement your space, be sure to consider how the furniture fits into the overall color scheme. A space isn’t defined by the color of its walls or floors alone. Selecting furniture that fits with the design brings a more cohesive and stylized feel to the room. For example, a desk and bookshelves in pale natural hues can lend warmth to an office with walls painted a cool dynamic blue.
family features
From experiences to surroundings, the past year has brought a renewed focus on feeding the soul. In an era of overstimulation and information overload, many are finding a new appreciation for living life minimally but with maximum experiences. That mentality is increasingly evident in all aspects of life, especially with home design and decor. After all, spending more time at home means more time to discover what truly evokes happiness. At the same time, as the focus on physical and mental wellness heightens, design experts see those trends reflected in a more considered approach to design inspired by color therapy, which makes it possible to create beautiful spaces filled with healing color.
CABINETS
Painted cabinets are on-trend, and if you’re bored with basic whites and grays, you’re not alone. Designers are going bold in the kitchen and using cabinetry as a showpiece. These color palettes create inspiring spaces that invite you to get busy baking or simply pull up a chair and linger over a cup of coffee. If you’re concerned about how to bring a color palette together, consider using a collection that has been intentionally curated to mix and match shades for a perfect look no matter which hues you choose. You can easily achieve a new look with an option like the Delightfully Daring Color Collection from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams. With earthy tones inspired by nature and a dose of vibrancy, the shades are simultaneously energizing and calming. The palette makes it easy to introduce statement colors in unexpected ways so you can feel confident in your selections.
TEXTILES
Elements like window treatments, blankets, pillows and rugs lend important detail and character to a room, and they’re also a relatively affordable way to make noticeable changes. The key is to establish cohesion in the space so no one element is overpowering. Softer tones and natural textures can help bring balance to bold hues while vibrant shades create a colorful pop against a more neutral backdrop. To keep the balance, start with your color statement, whether it’s bold bedding in an otherwise neutral bedroom or softer shades in the accent pieces for a room with strong color applied to the decorative molding. Explore color combinations and get inspired to bring healing design elements into your own home at hgtvhomebysherwinwilliams.com.
With an expertly coordinated color palette, like the Color Collections from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, colors work in perfect harmony in any combination. Thoughtful use of color is among the most effective design tools for reveal-worthy style in your home.
Incorporate Color Like a Pro •
Balance the boldness of red with soft whites and natural textures.
•
Rustic reds and natural wood elements add warmth to a cool backdrop.
•
An invigorating green hue pairs beautifully with brass, copper and rich wood tones.
•
For a soft, monochromatic look that’s full of complexity and dimension, add layers of texture with furnishings in the same color for a 3D color look.
•
Carry bold color onto ceilings for a truly immersive experience.

Lighten Up! 5 Designer Tips for TransformingYour Home Lighting bpt
When it comes to choosing beautiful, functional lighting, the selections can appear endless and may be leaving you with no idea where to start.
director-design, Luxury Space for Kohler Co., offers the following suggestions on choosing ideal home lighting.
If so, you're not alone. Many homeowners mistakenly believe any fixture will do the same job, when in fact effective lighting design is something of an art. The right lighting elements can make your home more relaxing or energizing, boost your sense of well-being and make daily tasks easier, all while reflecting your personal taste. According to Statista, the desire for such improvements motivated 63% of U.S. consumers to plan changes to their home lighting over 2020-2021.
your lighting to accomplish in the room you're addressing. How is the room used? Do you need a main source of illumination for the space, or do you need to supplement that with decorative accents? Where do you need direct and indirect light?
To assist such forward-thinking homeowners, Erin Hoover,
6 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com
FACTOR IN FUNCTION. Ask yourself what you'd like
CONSIDER EXISTING ARCHITECTURE. Even if you like an eclectic look (Pinterest and Instagram can be inspiration), you'll want to at least partially align each fixture with the rest of your space in terms of form, line and/or color. In general, high ceilings work
well with pendants, chandeliers and linear-style lighting and lower ceilings work better with flush or semi-flush fixtures and sconces. Your furniture layout may guide placement of chandeliers, linear style designs or pendants.
STAY SAVVY IN THE KITCHEN. Since most kitchens feature multiple light sources, Hoover recommends designating one fixture as your statement or focal piece, then choosing other functional and decorative accent pieces that align. "The other lighting doesn't have to match, but should be a little simpler," she says. "Make sure it's the correct scale for your space and ceiling height," Hutton continues. "Pendant or linear lighting is a good choice for kitchen islands and bars, and mixed metals are on trend with or without black or white accent finishes." For added design flexibility, she notes, choose lighting that can be raised or lowered to easily adjust the height above bar areas, counters and islands. KOHLER Lighting also exclusively offers finishes that perfectly color match Kohler and Kallista fixtures and faucets. INTRODUCE STYLE TO YOUR BATHROOM.
Depending on your daily routines, you may want your bath to offer both bright, functional lighting (for grooming) and mood lighting (for relaxation). Popular layouts feature 7- to 9-inch sconces mounted on each side of a vanity mirror, or a larger single sconce placed on the wall overhead. In powder rooms where steam isn't an issue, Hoover likes decorative Kohler sconces that feature linen-look woven shades; she also recommends installing dimmer switches. "If you have the ceiling height, I love a chandelier in a bathroom," she adds. "A 20 to 24-inch chandelier may be better than a 30- to 36-inch one unless you have a very spacious bath with a ceiling height of more than nine feet. A larger pendant of 15 to 18 inches makes a statement over a freestanding tub if ceiling heights allow."
FIT OUT YOUR FOYER. Hoover recommends
considering the height and depth of these important, first-impression rooms before deciding on the pendant, pendant cluster or chandelier that will make the right statement. "A single pendant can look stunning in a foyer that's nine feet wide, whereas a 36-inch chandelier or two-tier chandelier is perfect in a grand foyer," she advises. Since your lighting design is so important to the beauty, functionality and overall mood of your home, it should never be an afterthought. Take time to choose from the wide variety of bright, beautiful styles available, then invest in the fixtures that will truly transform your living spaces. Going Green: 5 Tips to Create an Eco-Friendly Home
bpt
With sustainable practices top of mind and a revived shift toward conscious consumption, Americans everywhere are seeking ways to lead a more sustainable, ecofriendly lifestyle. From saving water to reducing energy usage, these are the top five ways to go green for the environment and your wallet. What does it mean to go green? 2021 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Bosch home appliances defines this as the commitment to empowering consumers with more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible products. Leading an eco-friendly lifestyle starts within the home. What products and appliances are you utilizing in key home spaces to achieve a low carbon footprint and lower energy bills? Check out the below key features and practices that make sustainable living easy.
8 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com
1) REDUCE YOUR ENERGY USAGE.
By using less energy, you can help reduce your carbon footprint and save on your household bills. If you're purchasing a new refrigerator, laundry pair or dishwasher, look for the ENERGY STAR label to find the most efficient appliances. For example, Bosch compact laundry pairs feature dryers with heat pump drying technology, a ventless, sustainable drying solution that was awarded Most Efficient of ENERGY STAR in 2021. For further energy savings, some refrigerators have high-efficiency compressors to generate less heat when they are running for a lower energy output, as well as an Eco Mode that automatically adjusts the appliance's temperatures to run in an energy-saving setting. A simple eco-conscious practice is letting your leftovers cool postmealtime before storing them in the refrigerator, avoiding
3) LIMIT FOOD WASTE.
To best limit food waste, focus on appliances that keep your food fresher longer and organize your refrigerator to keep items in view. A recent study found that Americans toss 103 pounds of spoiled food per year - that's roughly $3,000 wasted annually. The latest refrigerators on the market can do much more than just cool food - look for one with innovative technologies that help limit food waste, such as Bosch French door bottom mount refrigerators that feature a four-point FarmFresh System with pre-programmed freshness settings and odor control. Another way to combat food waste is saving leftover ingredients for meals you can prep ahead and stretch across multiple days. Consider making a leftover vegetable soup using veggies you have remaining from other prepared dishes throughout the week - you'll make a tasty dinner, reduce food waste and save money when buying produce.
4) USE ECO-FRIENDLY CLEANING PRODUCTS.
Some household cleaning products contain chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Make your own all-purpose cleaner with natural ingredients for an eco-friendly approach to spring cleaning. For example, let orange peels sit in a jar with white vinegar for 7-10 days, drain the liquid into a spray bottle and you're left with a great smelling, homemade, all-purpose cleaner.
5) BE WATER WISE.
the increased energy it takes for the refrigerator to cool down its interior.
2) SHOP SMARTLY.
You can reduce your carbon footprint when you buy locally sourced fruits and vegetables in season, which don't need to be transported for long distances. Shop at your local farmer's market, and don't be afraid to ask questions, like "Where is this produce from?" and "When was it picked?" Pro tip: Fruits like cantaloupe, apricots, raspberries, honeydew and white cherries are in season for spring. Another green way to shop is bringing your own reusable grocery totes to avoid the plastic bags provided at the store. Consider using a cotton or other reusable produce bag as well when picking fruits and vegetables, further cutting down on plastic waste.
There is a widespread myth that dishwashers use more water than hand-washing, when in fact, far less water is consumed when you run a dishwasher designed with water efficiency. On average, hand-washing uses about 27 gallons per load compared to the dishwasher which uses around three. A recent study found that 94% of consumers hand-wash glassware, plastics and more, when these items can be washed in the dishwasher. Many Americans also have a preconceived notion of needing to fully wash their dishes before loading the dishwasher, but the truth is you simply need to scrape off leftover food and let the machine do its job. Saving water outside the kitchen is just as important; choose a laundry pair with a washer designed to reduce water consumption. Many washers on the market have connected features that offer consumption forecasts for each laundry program so you can stay on top of your usage. A good rule of thumb when doing laundry is "less is more" - avoid adding too much detergent to the washer, as the machine will take longer to rinse and will use more water.

Perfecting Your Imperfect Pantry: Tips to Achieve Inner Calm Through an Organized Space bpt
When you open your kitchen pantry, is it streamlined and tidy or more cluttered and chaotic? The state of your home impacts your state of mind, so getting better organized in the kitchen can help you feel calmer in other parts of life. Cleaning and organizing our homes gives us something we can control when we can't control much of the rest of the world - even with a space as small as a pantry. Stylist, interior designer and TV host Emily Henderson has a few tricks for keeping her pantry clean and user-friendly. As a mother to two small children, she knows clean cupboards are key to keeping her family life from getting too chaotic. Here are her favorite ways to refresh and rearrange pantries and cupboards, to maximize space no matter its size and give your kitchen a more beautiful look: Buy in bulk: This saves on packaging waste and offers a better glimpse of what foods you have and how much. Plus, this helps prevent last-minute runs to the store for a missing ingredient when you're in the middle of cooking a meal. Try keeping pantry staples like flour, sugar, pasta, coffee and cereal fresh in secure, space-saving containers such as Rubbermaid Brilliance® Pantry that fit in the pantry or cupboard. Airtight, clear and stackable containers like these keep you organized and on task. Create a hierarchy: Organize shelves based on ease and accessibility. Keep snacks like pretzels, cookies and bars at a lower height, as they're easier to reach. Everyday cooking items like rice, pasta and dry beans should be
10 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com
placed a bit higher, followed by baking ingredients - and anything else used less often - up top. Remember, every household functions a bit differently, so adopt a hierarchy system that works best for you. Decant: Decanting means moving pantry staples from their original packaging into a different, labeled container, usually a clear one like Brilliance® Pantry. These containers feature StainShield™ plastic so containers stay looking new, 360-degree crystal clarity, a two-latch lid for a secure seal and a variety of sizes to accommodate any amount of food you need to store. Being able to see what and how much is inside a container makes cooking, packing lunches and baking more efficient - plus, it makes the pantry appear more luxurious. Adapt to your space: If you keep a system, it doesn't matter if you have a walk-in pantry or only a few shelves to work with. Choose containers that are modular and stackable to maximize vertical space, then designate sections for certain tasks. Baking might be in one section, breakfast items in another, snacks in a separate space, and so on. Taking time to organize pantry and cupboard spaces now will have long-term benefits. Not only does it make the kitchen more pleasing to look at, but a pantry that's perfect for you helps save time, reduces potential food waste and frustration - but most importantly, it inspires a more positive state of mind.

Waves of Fun Swimming Safety Tips for Summer family features
Playing in or around water is one of the joys of summer, but this treasured seasonal pastime comes with some serious risks. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As COVID-19 restrictions ease, many families will have more informal gatherings and take trips to the beach, increasing the potential for children to have unsupervised access to water sources. Because of this, it’s important for children to take swimming lessons to learn water safety skills and create safer habits in and around water. As swimming lessons begin across the country, many are being conducted safely with COVID-19 precautions in place. Protect your family’s safety around water this summer with these tips from the Make a Splash Tour, presented by Phillips 66 and the USA Swimming Foundation.
14 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com
DESIGNATE A WATER WATCHER AND CLOSELY MONITOR CHILDREN. Designate a water watcher when you are in, on or around water. Watch all children and adolescents swimming or playing in or around water, even if they know how to swim. Keeping young children or inexperienced swimmers within arm’s length at all times can help ensure you’re able to provide assistance if and when it’s needed.
WEAR A LIFE JACKET. Anyone participating in any boating, paddling or towed water sports, regardless of swimming ability in pool or open water situations, should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Preschool-aged children (5 years old and younger), who are not protected by touch supervision, in particular, should always wear a life jacket. Swimming aids and water toys – such as water wings, inflatable water wings and rings – are not intended to be life-saving devices. They may provide some buoyancy in the water but do not prevent drowning.
SWIM WITH A BUDDY. When possible, choose
swimming locations where a trained lifeguard is watching for dangerous conditions and helping keep an eye on swimmers. Also make it a practice to always have at least two people swimming together. That way, if someone has a problem, the other can get help.
LEARN TO SWIM. Research has shown formal swimming
lessons reduce the risk of childhood drowning by 88%. Through the annual Make a Splash Tour, the USA Swimming Foundation, with the support of Phillips 66, encourages children’s swim lessons. By equipping your child with the skill of swimming, you’ll open doors to a lifetime of safety, fun, fitness and even employment opportunities. While lessons progressively teach a variety of swimming strokes, some of the most important things swimmers learn – even in beginner classes – are breath control and how to float. These basic skills are essential for staying above water should someone find himself or herself unable to touch or too tired to swim to safety. Children can participate in swimming lessons before they can walk, and parent-child swim lessons provide bonding opportunities along with water safety education.
ENTER WATER FEET FIRST. Diving in a pool that is too shallow or into water where you’re not certain what’s below the surface, like a lake, can have dire
consequences. Teach children to dive only in designated diving areas and to always enter water of unknown or nonvisible depth feet first.
SWIM IN DESIGNATED AREAS AND OBEY POSTED SIGNS AND FLAGS. Ropes, buoys and
flags in larger bodies of water like lakes or oceans are commonly used to mark off safe swimming areas and provide visual cues about changes in depth, underwater surfaces and currents. Teach children what these signs and markers mean and that they’re in place as safety tools, not toys to play with or float on.
LEARN CPR. If the unthinkable does happen, knowing how to perform CPR allows you to take immediate action, which has been shown to significantly better the outcome for children with submersion injuries. In the time it takes for paramedics to arrive, you could save someone’s life. Seconds count; the more quickly lifesaving CPR is started, the better the chances of recovery. There are many places that offer CPR training, including community organizations and nonprofit groups. Remember to keep your certification current once you have completed the initial requirements. Make safety a priority for your summer water fun. Find more information, including swim lesson providers in your area, by visiting usaswimming.org/makeasplash.
FINDING A SWIM LESSON PROVIDER
While researching programs, some industry best practices to look for include:
If you’re unsure where to take your child for swim lessons in your community, these tips can help:
•
Ask about the facility’s COVID-19 mitigation protocols. Swim lessons can be safely administered with proper protective equipment and procedures.
•
A nationally recognized learn-to-swim curriculum or an independently developed learn-to-swim curriculum that follows a similar model.
•
Trained and certified instructors, with on-deck lifeguards holding current CPR and first aid certifications.
•
Ask other parents in your area where they take their children. You can ask people you know and use social media and neighborhood boards to get tips. If your school has a swimming team, the coach may also be able to give you some ideas.
•
Another resource is online search tools, such as usaswimming. org/makeasplash, which allows you to search for swim lesson providers near you. Many of these programs also offer options for free or reduced-cost swim lessons.
•
A maximum 6-to-1 student-to-instructor ratio for group lessons.
•
Once you identify a program, visit the facility with your child to see how swim lessons are run.
•
Minimum of 30 minutes per week of in-water instruction with a minimum total in-water instruction time of four hours.
•
Find out who your child’s teacher will be and whether it’s possible to meet him or her in advance.
•
Written and practiced emergency action plans.
•
Learn the program expectations for you as a parent or guardian.
•
Regulation of the facility and water by the Department of Health or similar governing agency.
•
Inquire about the provider’s approach and learn-to-swim philosophy.
•
Established and practiced child-protection policies.
•
Screening and background checks on all staff members.

Tips for a Safer, More Enjoyable Summer at the Pool
state point
As summer approaches, pools are great for play, exercise and therapy. However, it is critical that while enjoying ourselves, we take appropriate safety precautions. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 275 children nationwide under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools annually, and more than 4,100 children receive medical treatment for poolrelated accidents, the majority of which occur in backyard pools. Luckily, building codes and standards can help. “Building codes are life savers and as the leading building codes and standards developer, we are accounting for every facet of the home, which includes specific provisions to make pools and spas safer,” says Dominic Sims, CEO of the International Code Council.
16 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com
Emphasizing the importance of water safety, the Code Council has dedicated a week (May 17-23) during its annual Building Safety Month to the topic. To ensure individuals are having safe pool fun, the Code Council shares the following tips:
INSTALL FENCES AND PROTECTIVE GATES:
To ensure the pool area is inaccessible to unauthorized swimmers and children when there is no supervisor, install a fence at least 4-feet high around pool and spa areas with a self-closing, self-latching gate or door. Move all chairs, tables, large toys or other objects away from the perimeter that would allow a child to climb up to reach the gate latch or enable someone to climb over the fence.
‘‘ ‘‘
Install alarms on all doors and windows to detect unauthorized access from the home into the pool area. REMEMBER SAFETY COVERS: Install an approved safety
cover on any pool. For the safety of all individuals, do not allow anyone to stand or play on it.
BE CODE-COMPLIANT WITH DRAIN COVERS AND GRATES: To help identify compliance with current standards,
all pool and hot tub drains must have a cover or grate marked with the appropriate product marking, including the service life in years and an information label that is provided to the pool owner. Not having a compliant cover could result in some part of a swimmer’s body being entrapped in the drain – a dangerous situation that could result in injury or drowning. If a cover is broken, missing or noncompliant, the pool should be closed immediately, and a replacement should be performed by pool professionals.
ENSURE AN EXISTING POOL HAS SAFE SUCTION OUTLETS: Pools and spas with a single drain – other than an KEEP SAFETY DEVICES NEARBY: Always
keep basic lifesaving equipment handy (pole, rope and personal flotation devices) and know how to use them. These aids should be kept on both sides of the pool and should remain stationary – not be misplaced through play activities.
INSTALL ALARMS: Install alarms on all doors

Creative Summer Moments Family-friendly Ideas for Summer fun family features
Warm, sunny days are the perfect setting for making family memories, but they’re also ideal opportunities to encourage kids to get creative and let their imaginations soar. These ideas for summertime activities encourage family interaction, and the more kids get to help plan and organize the details, the more engaged you can expect them to be.
VISIT YOUR LOCAL PARK
Pack all the kids’ favorite snacks and beverages to keep cool and hydrated. Choose your spot under a big shady tree and spread out for an impromptu picnic. Be sure to bring along outdoor toys for a game of catch or lighten the load and create a nature scavenger hunt with different types of leaves, rocks and flowers for kids to discover. If they come across an unfamiliar plant or animal, snap a picture with your phone so you can do some research on it when you get home. Encourage the kids to draw or design a piece of art reflecting the things they saw.

CREATE WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS
Away from the school setting, kids sometimes have fewer opportunities to practice expressing their ideas and getting creative. Fun tools can make an artistic session more exciting, so look for unique methods like blending Zebra Pen Mildliner Brush Pens with water and a paint brush to create fun, pastel watercolor paintings with minimal mess. The pens are conveniently double-ended with a paint brush-like tip on one end and fine marker tip on the other so you can precisely draw a design then create softer swirls of color using water and a brush.
WATER SPONGE CHALLENGE
Cool off with a fun and refreshing water fight with a few creative twists. First grab sponges, or water sponge balls, and a full bucket of water. The sponges are reusable so you can use them all summer long. Make it extra fun by organizing teams with kids against adults or everyone fending for themselves. Encourage kids to devise their own blockades and targets or adapt a classic game like
mess-free watercolor art Learn how to make a faux watercolor masterpiece using Zebra Pen Mildliner Brush Pens. 1. Sketch your design using a pencil. 2. Trace over your pencil design with a bleed-proof technical drawing pen. Be sure to erase any pencil lines still showing. 3. Use brush pens to add blocks of color to each area, but don’t worry about thoroughly covering each line. Use more colors to add more visual interest and depth. 4. Focus on one section of the design at a time. 5. Dip a clean paint brush into a cup of water. The brush should be well saturated but not so wet that it’s dripping. 6. Move the wet paint brush over the color blocks, spreading color to cover white spaces and blend. 7. Once the design is dry, use brush pens to add details and accent colors then trace over original design lines to add bolder borders.
Homemade Cards Keeping in touch with loved ones is fun any time of the year. Pick an overcast or way-too-hot day to spend creating homemade cards to send to family and friends. MATERIALS: • Cardstock or construction paper • Zebra Pen Zensations Colored Pencils • Stickers • Scissors • •

baseball or dodgeball using water sponges in place of the usual balls. You could also do a sponge scavenger hunt to load up everyone’s buckets before the dousing begins.
FIND THE ANIMALS
Visit your local Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoo or aquarium and have your kids find as many animals as they can from the AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction species list. It’s a good opportunity to talk about the concept of extinction and why these animals are on the list. Follow up the visit with an activity that reinforces how everyone has a role in conservation and look for ways to help protect each family member’s favorite animal.
MAKE OVEN S’MORES
On a rainy night (or any night) make a s’more by putting it in the oven. They turn out just as melty and gooey as the campfire version but with easier prep and cleanup. This is a tasty way to get those creative juices flowing. Experiment
Encourage kids to think about their intended recipients to create a card that is unique to an experience or memory they have shared together using favorite colors or recreating the memory. On a cardstock or construction paper base, use colored pencils to write a message and draw pictures. Add stickers or use scissors and additional construction paper or ribbon to add decorations and details. With a grown-up’s help, hot glue items to the base card, if necessary.
with different candies, such as peanut butter cups in place of chocolate bars. Or add different ingredients and have other family members guess the flavors.
RECYCLED ANIMAL CRAFTS
Combining a creative activity with an important message such as conservation can help kids grasp big concepts about keeping animals and the earth safe and happy. Use recycled materials such as cardstock and “junk” from the recycling bin as well as hot glue and colored pens or pencils to have your kids create an art project featuring a favorite animal or one they’ve seen at a park or zoo. Simply piece items together to look like the animal as well as its habitat like trees, grass or the dessert. Then hot glue the items to the cardboard base and use pens or pencils to add details. Tips to Save Time, Money and Energy in the Kitchen family features
As the country reopens, family schedules are inching toward their pre-lockdown levels of busyness. Sports, extracurricular activities, school, work and social commitments all leave families looking for ways to save time, money and energy in the kitchen. Make your family mealtime more efficient and enjoyable with these tips:
nutritious, well-rounded meals instead of making lastminute decisions that often include less healthy choices. When you plan a week at a time, you can take into account how to use ingredients across multiple meals to save money and preparation time. When planning out meals, keep in mind that leftovers from a protein main dish can be repurposed to top an entree salad or incorporated into a pasta or casserole dish later in the week.
PLAN MEALS IN ADVANCE
SHOP SMARTER
Scheduling meals eliminates the stress of pulling something together at the last minute or wasting precious time figuring out what you have on hand to make. Planning ahead can also help ensure you’re preparing

Limiting your meal prep time can actually start at the store if you shop for budget-friendly prepared ingredients that do some of the work for you. You can find side dishes that are ready to heat and serve, along with shortcuts like
For example, the Sweet Teriyaki Seasoned Pork Loin Filets let you create dishes with international flair while options like the Garlic & Parmesan or Steakhouse Seasoned Pork Loin Filets are versatile enough for a wide range of meals on busy weeknights.
FIND EASY YET ENJOYABLE RECIPES
Prepared ingredients are also an easy way to get out of a mealtime rut and explore new recipes or a style of cuisine that might be unfamiliar to your family. All the seasonings are already perfectly blended, so you can skip the guesswork and be confident your dish will turn out as expected. Recipes that involve ready-to-make ingredients are also typically budgetfriendly since you don’t have to invest in seasonings and spices separately. Fewer ingredients also typically add up to more efficient preparation and less time in the kitchen.
RECRUIT HELP
Rather than asking one family member to shoulder meal preparation responsibilities alone, delegate age-appropriate tasks to the rest of your family. Even the littlest members of the household can help with jobs like setting the table. Older kids can assist with meal prep and getting drinks ready. If cooperation is lacking, consider creating contests to have the kids racing to complete their tasks first. Even if your time around the table is brief, bringing the family together in the kitchen can help maximize your quality time together.
LIMIT CLEANUP TIME
meats that come marinated and require minimal preparation to assemble a meal. Affordable and time-saving options like Tyson Seasoned & Marinated Proteins are already seasoned and marinated so you can skip trimming and prepping the meat and get straight to cooking.
Shop for ingredients that can be used in numerous timesaving ways and think in terms of the entire meal preparation process, including cleanup. For example, versatile Tyson Seasoned & Marinated Proteins can be cooked using quick-prep appliances like an air fryer or with a grill that requires minimal cleaning after you’re done cooking. You can also choose simple recipes and one-dish meals to cut down on dirty dishes. Stir-fry, stews and sheet pan meals are all options that help limit the amount of time you have to spend cleaning up when dinner is over. Summer Safety Tips for Your Pet
‘
state point
From heat waves to fireworks, summer can take a toll on pets’ emotional and physical wellness. According to some pet experts, the heart of relief for a number of common seasonal pet woes is CBD. Here are some insights into how to use it, plus additional measures you can take for a safe, healthy summer with pets.
FIREWORKS AND THUNDER: Unexpected noises
can be extremely frightening for pets, causing what’s known as situational stress. If possible, try administering Calming CBD-infused Edibites, which contains soothing and relaxing properties, about an hour before you expect fireworks or thunderstorms to occur. (Helpful hint: it can also be used to relieve situational stress associated with travel, guests, etc.)
EXERCISE ALSO HELPS. Whether you take an extra
long walk or play fetch, wearing your pet out earlier in the day might help them stay calm or even sleep through noise disruptions. Additionally, you can prepare by setting up a quiet space for your pet, full of their favorite blankets and toys. Finally, be mindful that pets often react to loud noises by running away. According to the ASPCA, onein-five pets that go missing run off after hearing loud noises like fireworks. Bring cats indoors during storms and fireworks. If you must take a dog outside, keep them securely leashed. Microchips and up-to-date ID tags can help you safely reunite with your pet should they go missing.
HEAT: If you’re sweating, there’s a good chance your

an uptick in nature hikes and long days at the dog park. As a result, your dog may experience hip or joint discomfort. Consider adding a beneficial supplement to their everyday regimen, like Hip & Joint Edibites, which contains full-spectrum hemp extract with naturally occurring CBD, along with glucosamine and chondroitin, a combination known to help maintain normal healthy cartilage and joint function, as well as support joint flexibility and mobility. Depending on your pet’s health needs, you may want to upgrade to a higher potency pet CBD product like a hemp oil that you can massage onto their joints.

bowls with fresh, clean water. Choose mornings or evenings for exercising with dogs to avoid the hottest part of the day. On scorchers, avoid paw-topavement contact, letting your dog walk in the grass instead. If your pup’s paws do get affected by the hot pavement, applying a topical CBD solution such as Canna Care from Pet Releaf can help relieve the burn. Finally, beat the heat with regular grooming -- however, don’t shave your pet’s fur -- their coat protects them from sunburn.
Unsure which CBD solution will work best for your pet? Check out Pet Releaf’s Product Finder tool at petreleaf.com/productfinder, which factors in age, weight, level of discomfort and wellness needs. Use the code RELEAF25 through July 31, 2021 to receive 25% off and free shipping. With the right tools and knowledge, you can support your pet’s wellness this summer and protect them from common seasonal health and safety hazards.
ALLERGIES: Allergies can wear pets down in
numerous ways, including weakening their immune system. CBD hemp oil however can offer an immunity boost by activating the body’s two-way communication system between the brain and the immune system.

Make Nutrition a Priority for Your Pet
feature familys
As a dog or cat parent, you are responsible for your pet’s well-being and making good decisions about what’s best for him or her. Providing your cherished companion with a high-quality, nutritionally balanced diet is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your pet lives a happy and healthy life. A balanced pet food recipe formulated with high-quality ingredients provides your pet with the optimal mix of the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals he or she needs to thrive. For premium quality, look for recipes that are minimally processed; made with fresh meats, poultry and fish; and contain no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors. While the quality of ingredients is important, it’s also crucial to choose a recipe that is specific to your pet’s life stage and breed size. This helps ensure it contains

the right balance of nutrients to meet your pet’s specific needs, including hip and joint support and weight management as he or she gets older. Puppy and kitten recipes are specially formulated with higher levels of protein and essential fats to help support the needs of growing pets. Conversely, adult and senior pets may benefit from diets that are lower in calories and fats to help maintain a healthy weight as their metabolisms and activity levels slow. Large breed dogs may also benefit from ingredients in their diets like glucosamine, chondroitin and green-lipped mussels to support healthy hips and joints as they age. Smaller kibble and breath freshening ingredients like parsley and peppermint are often well-suited for small breed dogs.
By choosing carefully balanced pet foods made with premium ingre-dients, you can take nutrition to another level for your pet. One example is Now Fresh recipes for dogs and cats. Each kibble recipe is made using fresh, de-boned muscle meat and no by-product or meat meals. The recipes also feature more than 20 nutrient-rich superfood ingredients.
CRANBERRIES:

When selecting the right food for your pet, look for a statement on the packaging that confirms it has been formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. An option like Now Fresh also clearly indicates on the package which life stage and breed size the recipe has been formulated for.
WHOLE NEST-LAID EGGS:
Eggs are a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids in the optimal amounts dogs and cats need.
PUMPKIN:
Rich in beta-carotene and prebiotic fiber, pumpkin helps support healthy digestion.
With antioxidants to support immunity and antimicrobial properties, which can help support urinary tract health.
STRAWBERRIES:
An excellent source of the antioxidant vitamin C, B vitamins, dietary fiber and essential minerals.

BLUEBERRIES:
A great source of essential fiber and manganese, blueberries are also rich in antioxidants that help support healthy immune systems.
POMEGRANATE:
This fruit is rich in antiox-idants and a good source of dietary fiber, folate, vitamin C and vitamin K.
PAPAYA:
A tropical fruit, papaya is a natural source of digestive enzymes.
PROPER PUPPY NUTRITION Choosing the right food is an important part of providing your pet with good nutrition, but there are other aspects of feeding that can help ensure your pet is getting the most out of every meal. Puppies need smaller, frequent meals consistently spaced throughout the day. This helps them learn routines while contin-ually replenishing their fast-growing bodies with energy and nutrients. At 6 months, you can consider reducing your puppy’s meals to two per day. You can reinforce routines and help set good bathroom habits by always taking your puppy for a potty break after a meal. Keeping your puppy well hydrated is also important. Always leave a bowl of fresh water where he or she can access it during the day then pick it up a few hours before bedtime to help with house training. Incorporating wet food can also increase water intake, but be sure to balance it out by reducing the dry food you offer so you’re not adding excess calories.

Launch Your Boat Into a New Season
family features
Whether you’re racing against the waves or quietly floating with a pole in hand, a day on the water is hard to beat. However, before you can enjoy the excitement of a new season, there are several steps you need to take to make sure your boat is ready for the ride.
SYSTEM CHECK
Your boat’s fuel and electric systems need an experienced eye to determine potential problems. Cracked or
30 H&H Magazine | www.STLHandHMag.com
damaged hoses and connections need to be replaced, and all fittings and clamps should be checked to ensure they’re tight and secure. Test exhaust and ventilation systems, and replace worn or lose belts and cables, giving special attention to the steering and throttle cables. If you didn’t change the oil and filter before putting your boat in storage, do so before the season begins. Also be sure to check oil, power steering fluid and coolant levels as well as running lights and emergency features such as horns.
BATTERY FUNCTION
A reliable power source is essential for powering your trolling motor and operating accessories like fish finders when your engine isn’t running. You’ll need to test your battery before heading out on the water. If it’s time for a replacement, look for a powerful and cost-efficient option like Interstate Batteries’ Enhanced Flooded Deep-Cycle Marine Battery. The battery features a durable design with extended battery life and includes a two-year, free replacement warranty.
VISUAL INSPECTION
After several months in storage, it’s a good idea to give your boat a thorough inspection so you can identify any holes, cracks or dings that may impact its performance or safety. Scan the hull closely to for any abnormalities and check the propeller, as even minor dings and scratches can affect its operation.
CAREFUL CLEANING
Depending on the security of your storage space and how you covered your boat, you may not have much heavy cleaning to do. However, it’s a good idea to start the season fresh by giving everything a thorough wipe down. This can help illuminate any problems you may have overlooked during your visual inspection. In addition, using UV protectant on exposed surfaces can help prevent damage such as cracks and fading caused by harsh sunlight.
SAFETY SUPPLIES
Before you hitch the trailer, take inventory of your on-board safety supplies. Be sure your life jackets are in good condition and that you have options to appropriately fit all passengers. Check fire extinguishers to ensure they’re in good working order and test the carbon monoxide detector (or add one if there’s not already a detector installed). Also scan your safety kit; update any expired items and replenish your supply of bandages or other items that may be running low. Find more information to get your summer on the water underway at interstatebatteries.com.

Sweet, Summery Treats After some fun in the pool and time spent in the sun, a cooling treat is often the perfect way to cap off a summer day. Fresh fruits make those sweet eats even tastier and easier by making dessert in the morning and letting it freeze while you enjoy the warmth outdoors. These Watermelon Berry Frozen Pops make dessert about as simple as possible by blending watermelon, blueberries, raspberries and honey before adding to ice pop molds and freezing throughout the day. With the addition of refreshing watermelon, you’re opting for a flavorful fruit that includes just 80 calories and no fat while providing an excellent source of vitamin C (25%) and higher levels of lycopene (12.7 milligrams per 2-cup serving) – an antioxidant being studied for its role in sun protection – than any other fresh fruit or vegetable.
