Cheers to the Bienfait Fire Department for the Carnival fundraiser at the Weldon school! My kids loved seeing the Bubbleman as well as playing all the games, getting all the prizes and doing the cakewalk! Thanks for a fun afternoon!

Jeers to a town in the southeast for having bylaws that are NEVER enforced, as well as streets that haven’t been cleaned for years. Jeers to all the drivers who do not turn their fog lights off EVER. Did you know it is illegal to drive in city limits with your fog lights on? You are blinding people and going to cause accidents. Maybe the city police could have a two-day blitz on fog lights.

You might well be surprised at what you could learn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your resolute determination to stick by a position might make some people uncomfortable. But if you’re proved right (as I expect you to be), a lot of changes will tilt in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might feel conflicted between what you want to do and what you should do. The Estevan Farmers’ Market is readying for a return on May 5. The first farmers’ market of the season is expected to have lots of bedding plants, along with jewellery, crafts and greenhouse tomatoes.

Local vendors return to sell goods at market The Estevan Farmers’ Market is back with all the goods, fresh foods and amenities locals have come to expect. During the market’s spring season, there is a lot of demand for gardening goods, so Linda Jones, organizer of the local farmers’ market, said that will likely be reflective of the kinds of vendors at the first couple of weeks of the market. “It’s mostly bedding plants,” she said. “That’s what people are looking for right now.” Jones added that the local slogan continues to be Buy Local, Eat Local, Live Green. She said famers’ markets maintain their popularity, in large part, because consumers want to know where the food they are buying comes from. “Lots of people come to buy fresh stuff. They know where it comes from (at the market).”

It’s also a good place to buy safe food, Jones said. Part of her job is to make sure that all of the vendors have their food safety training and facilitate inspections by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Another big draw for the market is that it’s a social place, where consumers and sellers can talk about exactly what is going to be put on their table. Being able to ask exactly how something is grown, whether it’s in a greenhouse or the field, is important to a lot of people. “You get to meet the vendors, talk to the vendors. You can ask whether they use pesticides or not.” That gives consumers a lot of choice about how the food they eat is made or processed. While the vendor numbers are low compared to where they finished last year, Jones said that is to

be expected. It’s just part of switching the winter coat for the spring jacket. “Once we get going (the vendors) start to come in,” she said, noting that they had 10 registered vendors earlier this week. Jones does a lot of baking and also makes jams and jellies. Preparation for the farmers’ market usually begins in March and she starts getting jars of the colourful spreads together. The baked goods are made much closer to the market date. Last year’s weather did affect the market, said Jones, but added that this

is a whole new year. “It slowed us down (last year). It took until the fall to pick up.” Those looking to register as a vendor at the farmers’ market may call Jones at 306-483-2971. She said they always looking for new vendors. She said those who wish to sell baking or vegetables, or anything that consumers will eat, have to be certified through the Health Ministry’s food safety course. The market will once again be held at the Estevan Shoppers Mall parking lot.

There is plenty of awesome to go around For those who have followed the 1,000 Awesome Things blog, you know it counted down to its final awesome thing last week. From June 2008 to April 2012, each day Neil Pasricha added one awesome thing to his blog. What was great, and still is, about 1,000 Awesome Things is that all of the experiences and awesome things are relatable. The blog details 1,000 things that really are awesome, even if we haven’t consciously stopped to consider how great they are. Just because the countdown is over, doesn’t mean there aren’t more awesome things out there. The blog reminded us about times in our past and would often bring back memories we didn’t know we still had. One of his best entries, and certainly one that brought back the most nostalgia for me, was one of his earliest. No. 980 on the blog is old, dangerous playground equipment. I remember at my elementary school until I was in about Grade 4, there were two platforms as part of the larger playground equipment. The platforms were accessible by ramps, and sat about seven or eight feet off the ground.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers You could grab a makeshift zip line and Indiana Jones your way above everyone else all the way over to the other platform. There were two of them and you could race one another. Of course, as your feet were dangling down, the other kids were running around below, and they might try to grab your feet and pull you down. It was dangerous, and the most fun piece of equipment there. That was an entry that brought back great memories of not even thinking about any sort of danger and just climbing around all over the place. That’s what was so great about the old equipment. Here is my list of five (I dropped the first 995 for space reasons) awesome things I have found in Estevan, or Saskatchewan, in my time here so far: 5. Provincial highway speed limits of 100 kilometres per hour. It’s a joy after

dealing with frustratingly out-of-date 80 kilometre speed limits your whole life. Trust me, it’s awesome. 4. Going out for a Sunday drive and not hitting a single pothole. Around here that is an awesome achievement. 3. An unwavering devotion to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. As someone who has grown up an Argos fan, it’s awesome to see supporters who know exactly what happened in the last game. Ask an Argos fan about the last game, and they will say something about wishing Pinball was back and that they don’t care what happens until he is. 2. Estevan is maybe the most generous community I’ve lived in, and that’s awesome. Considering its size, this city has no problem drumming up support for the many fundraisers that support youth sports and not-for-profit organizations. 1. The weather here is awesome. Not the cold, obviously, but the sun. It’s the sunniest place in Canada for a reason. After two overcast days I have heard people complain about it being so dreary lately. If that’s all there is to complain about when it comes to weather, it’s awesome. What do you find awesome?

The future of problem solving on the farm The future of agriculture has long looked bright. I recall futurist and economist Lowell Catlett spoke in Yorkton years ago with a presentation he titled The Future Is So Bright You’ll Have to Wear Shades. It was an impassioned talk, which left an indelible impression on this writer. I was enthralled by the ideas Catlett spoke of, in particular with what he saw as the future associated with genetic modification. The idea of GM has been something many in the world balk at, but hearing ideas from Catlett including some still more fiction than science probably struck a chord for me because of my love of speculative fiction. Still, the idea of goats being modified to have high-value cheetah skin has stuck with me. Now, of course, GM hasn’t evolved that far–yet. But listening to Robert Saik, CEO with the Agri-Trend group of companies, speak to the Yorkton Rotary Club Farmer Appreciation Night, the importance of GM is still to be fully realized. Saik is definitely a man who sees a farm future that is blazingly bright. In, fact he looks at most things in the world and finds the silver lining. It’s hard to argue with his rationale. Saik points to some rather compelling statistics

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist including the longer life expectancy of almost everyone in the world. That factor alone speaks to humanity doing something right. When you add in, as Saik did, the sheer volume of knowledge being created daily in our world, you tend to hold out hope the cracks which are showing in the world can be fixed. The problem may simply be the will to focus that knowledge to effect the changes we need. Global climate change is a fact, whether you believe it’s a natural evolution of things or caused by humanity. Either way, some of what humanity does has its impact, but at present the world can’t even get on side with regards to what needs to be done, and when it needs to be done. The United States, which is a leader in the world, has balked at the cost associated with truly addressing greenhouse gas emissions - a stance Canada has been sadly eager to mimic. Until countries such as the U.S. and China take the leap, change will not occur. Of course, even if the U.S. finally found

a conscience, their economy is in such bad shape, affording the massive change needed would be a massive challenge. Back to farming directly, there are limited regions of the world capable of producing enough grain to export, the Canadian Prairies being a leader amongst those. As population grows, so does food demand, and this will challenge farmers to grow production to meet those needs. Precision farming, allowing precise applications of nutrients and crop protection products, coupled with GM, hold the hope of meeting increased production needs. But precision farming, while offering crop savings, does come with an implementation cost, which the consumer needs to pay somewhere along the way. In North America and Europe that might be all right, although shaky U.S. and European economies suggest short-term concerns as well. However, much of the world struggles to afford food. Some way of equalizing wealth is something hardly anyone talks about, although the rich continue to get richer and the poor are left even further behind. Living longer and having access to a growing volume of knowledge is great, but humanity has to work harder to address the difficult issues ahead. If not, the good times that hungry mouths could mean for farming may never be realized.

What is the future of cellphone technology?

He He She She Said By: Jordan Baker

With new reasons to upgrade your cellphone every three months, it might be important to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to new tech for your mobile. This way you can plan out how you will upgrade. If you can see the advances three moves ahead, you may only need to get a new phone every nine to 12 months if you know what’s coming and can decide exactly what new gizmo you can wait patiently for and which ones you will “need” long before they are unveiled. I’m sure everybody saw the resurrection of Tupac Shakur recently, when he appeared on stage as a holographic image more than a decade after his death. That is what I will wait for as my next cellphone. It will be holographic. Sure, the image of Tupac was a pre-rendered video holograph, but really it’s only a matter of time, probably a matter of months in today’s world before that technology is inserted into the little gadget in your purse. Skype is boring, two-dimensional video, but soon we will be communicating over long distances the same way they did in Star Wars. You will lay your phone down flat on your palm and projected above it, two feet from your face, will be your three-dimensional caller. If you’re making supper, set your phone down on your kitchen table and chat away with your 12-inch, transparent mother as you chop carrots. Whether the carrots will appear in her image of you is something the engineers can figure out. Maybe that won’t be the next new jump in cellphone technology, but it isn’t far out. Some movies of the 1980’s show a future that is now our present, and while many of the ideas put forward are a little different than what we actually see today, it’s not too hard to realize that they had some idea of what the future or present was going to look like. So go back and watch some terrible sci-fi movies from the ‘80s if you really want to see what’s coming next.

It’s hard to imagine the future of cellphones. For one, it’s an industry that’s expanding so quickly and coming out with technology I can’t even fathom. But I’ve got a couple of ideas that would be great for future cellphones. Some of them aren’t that original, but they’re still awesome. Retina recognition would be great. It would be easier than having to type a password every time you want to open your phone, and it’s not like someone can learn your eyes. Having retina recognition would be convenient when you leave your phone at the table with a group of friends. They wouldn’t be able to enter your phone and text your friends/crush/significant other inappropriate things about what you two will name your future children. Seriously, it would be great for everyone involved. Another piece of technology that I’m looking forward to is the holographic display and keyboard. It would be awesome to be able to set my phone down on a table and type like I’m using a normal keyboard. I’m better at typing on a keyboard, and that would basically get rid of the need for autocorrect, which makes so many people sound like fools. The holographic display wouldn’t be great for me personally, since I mostly use my phone for social media, but for those who game, that display would be incredible. The best technology, however, is quite possibly the simplest: waterproof cellphones that are still awesome. I’d seriously love to be able to take my iPhone under water to use the camera, or be able to accidentally drop the phone in the sink, the tub, the lake, and be able to fish it out and resume texting without a problem. A phone that was awesome and waterproof would be better than a phone that can project its screen and take a print of an eye.

The other, deadlier kind of stroke DEAR DR. DONOHUE: In October of last year, my husband, age 63, died of a brain hemorrhage (stroke). He was a youthful, health-conscious man, now sorely missed by his wife, family and friends. This tragedy was due to undiagnosed high blood pressure, since he, like many men, refused to visit the doctor. Please encourage people, especially 55 and older, to have a checkup so they don’t suffer a similar fate. -- R.A. ANSWER: My sincerest condolences to you and your family. I hope many who read your letter will take your advice. I’ve written about ischemic stroke, the kind that comes from a plugged brain artery. It accounts for most strokes. The letter-writer’s husband suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, one that comes from bleeding from a brain artery. Hemorrhagic strokes have an abrupt onset. A person can be fine one minute, and the next there’s a profound change. He or she can’t move an arm or a leg, can’t talk or has a sudden, severe headache. Shortly the person becomes unresponsive. For 50 percent of people with a hemorrhagic stroke, death is the final step, and it often comes quickly. Differentiating a stroke caused by bleeding from one caused by artery plugging is not something for an untrained person to attempt. Confronted by someone who has the signs of a stroke, an untrained person should call for immediate help. As Mrs. R.A. points

out, high blood pressure is one of the most common medical conditions responsible for a hemorrhagic stroke. Prevention of these lethal strokes depends on knowing what your blood pressure is. Keeping blood pressure in the normal range is the best way to prevent them. The trouble with high blood pressure is that it seldom produces any signs until it’s too late. The booklet on stroke presents the different kinds, their treatment and their prevention. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 902W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. DONOHUE: I am an 82-year-old man with a history of two cancers, prostate and bladder, two knee replacements and lots of osteoarthritis. In spite of all that, I’m in good shape. I work out every day, I tour by bicycle 20 to 25 miles in a day, and I’ve lots of energy. About four months ago, the strangest thing started happening to me. Every time I eat, my nose starts to

ANSWER: It is strange, and it has a name -- gustatory rhinitis, a classy way of saying “runny nose when you eat.” Hot and spicy foods often provoke the reaction. Some consider it a reflex that has no useful purpose. If you’re going out to eat and don’t want to be embarrassed, taking an antihistamine about an hour before the meal might work. The nasal spray Astelin has a good reputation for stopping the drip. Don’t use these every day. Save them for a special occasion. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Would a bull moose wearing pink get a mate? While dropping my five-year-old son Spencer off at pre-kindergarten the other day, I remarked to the teacher how difficult it was to find him a yellow shirt. It was yellow day, and he has no yellow in his wardrobe that I could find. That’s OK, the teacher responded. The other day students in the playground were talking about how they had to borrow T-shirts from their moms for pink day. Ah, yes. Pink, antibullying day - where the solidarity of wearing a homogenous colour that in our society is usually associated with feminine is supposed to stop the most basic urges of animal life - the battle for supremacy. Good luck with that. I worry about my son. He’s way, way behind in

his speech development. That’s why he’s in prekindergarten in the fi rst place, where he can get regular speech therapy. (It’s something I had to take from Grades 5 to 9, before going to debate nationals). It seems like a quarter of his consonants don’t want to come out, and he is very hard to understand, even for his parents at times. While his speech is starting to improve, it will surely make him a target on the school playground when he’s a little older. I am all but certain he will have to endure some bullying, perhaps a lot. I most certainly did. When my parents split and I moved to Yorkton just before the start of Grade 5, I would embark on four of the hardest years of my life. It didn’t help that I

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile was an uber-nerd. “Mr. Goltz, the World Book Encyclopedia said ... was something that actually came out of my mouth, in class, on a regular basis. I would say such things because as a bored farm kid, I had literally read about one-third of the whole World Book set by the time I was 10. much, either. While I had a few friends, there were many, many times when I sat alone at lunchtime. It got to the point where whenever I could, I would bike home a mile and a half for lunch just so I didn’t have to endure that loneliness. I didn’t get beat up a lot. Actually, that rarely happened, especially after a life-altering incident in Grade 7. The biggest bully in the class was a guy named Norman. Since he had failed a grade, he was nearly a head taller than many of us. Norman came after me in the hallway one day and punched me twice in the kidney. I spun around and hit him once in the eye with the most powerful right cross I could muster. The scrawny nerd laid out the bully. He couldn’t see out of that eye for two weeks.

There is always a pecking order. The strong get their choice in mates, food, and the like. How do we, enlightened human beings in the 21st century, seem to feel we can now eliminate this most basic instinct? Bullying is largely the establishment of that pecking order. Why does a bull moose grow horns? Surely it’s not with which to play the fiddle. Wearing pink is not going to get him the cow moose, but fending off other challengers will. It’s not nice. It’s not pretty. It’s bloody hurtful on the receiving end. But it’s reality. We can talk ourselves to death about eliminating bullying, but it will never happen without the elimination of the human race. The best we can do is equip our children with the self-esteem to ride it out, take their lumps in some cases, and be prepared to stand up in others. I have never struck another man in anger since that day, although I came close a few times. It wouldn’t have mattered how much pink was worn up to that point. Two boys were going to fight. Boys, and girls, fight. They always have, they always will. I can’t say I’m blameless. In Grade 11, a socalled “friend of mine had humiliated me one too many times in front of a bunch of girls, so I picked him up and put him head first into a garbage can. I doubt it impressed the girls, but I established I wasn’t going to be made a fool of without repercussions. In pretty much every social structure, in every species that I am aware of, there is some sort of social order which establishes who is the dominant player. We all know wolves and lions have alpha males. So do gorillas, and horses, and walruses. The list goes on and on. There’s a similar process often for females. My grandmother used to tell me about the boss cow in the herd that all the rest would follow.

Biological age change possible with work Recently I have embarked on a challenge that has been put in action through our website getreallive.com. We are in the process of launching a social media movement called “Change The Age.” Now, we know we can’t change our real age, however studies have proved that we can change our biological age, and in fact, we can affect and impact our genetic makeup by making changes in our everyday lives when it comes to food and healthy living. So, our GetRealLive “Change The Age” movement is all about changing certain aspects of our cur-

rent lives and transforming not only our bodies but our minds and souls into who/ what we want to be. I think it’s said best by Ghandi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” We all desire change in some part of our lives, whether it be in our physical body, in our thinking or perhaps on our spiritual journey. None of us has arrived, rather we are a constant work in progress. For me, at this point in time, I have embraced the physical side of Change The Age. I decided that as a 42-year-old mother of three, who doesn’t dip from the deep end of the gene

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life pool (our family has heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes), there are changes I need to make. Changes that involve losing a few pounds here and there and this means hard work, wise choices and replacing bad habits with good habits. For contextual purposes, I think it’s important

to note that I have always kept myself physically fit and have done my best to keep myself in good shape while travelling through the baby years. In saying that, over the past three years, I have let things slip. Although I recognize the key points, and the major life changes

that have aided this slip, I realize now that although drastic and devastating as these situations may have been, they have impacted and affected my greatest asset (which is me) in a negative way. The situations I’m referring to are: 1) A major relocation for our family: we moved countries - Australia to Canada. 2) We experienced a sudden loss: the death of my father. Through both of these major life changes I did what any mother does when things like this happen, I focused on others. Like any mother, I wanted everyone to be settled and through their grief before I was. It’s what we mums do! In and through this entire experience I lost a bit of myself, and now it’s time to take it all back. So, as our GetRealLive “Change The Age” movement begins, I have put myself forward as the one to show change in real time. I am blogging/ writing and sharing videos about my journey thus far.

It has been hard, I’ve been challenged and pushed beyond my physical capacity, but I am embracing the change because I know and understand change needs to happen. If I want to live the life I dream of, to be the wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend that I want to be, I need to make these changes. It took me being honest with myself and making the choice to work hard. I’m excited about sharing my honest journey, which includes the progress and the setbacks I’ve endured thus far. Feel free to follow or perhaps join me on this journey by visiting getreallive. com or listen to our live radio show every weekday morning and hear the updates. I am changing the age ... one decision at a time. I’m choosing to be the change I wish to see in the world.” Susan J Sohn getreallive.com susan@getreallive. com

The Pen shutting doors after 180 years PROVINCIAL SASKATOON - An organization which promotes scientific, critical and skeptical thinking is calling for an inquiry to learn just how prevalent exorcisms are in Canada after a news report last week said a Saskatoon church is actively seeking an exorcist. In some severe cases, believing you are possessed by a demon is an actual symptom of mental illness, said Justin Trottier with the Centre for Inquiry. “There isn’t a lot evidence to suggest that these claims for demonic possession are anything more than an association with known medical and psychiatric illnesses,”

Trottier said. “We can’t have unlicensed and unregulated individuals performing what essentially amounts to medical or psychiatric treatment.”

NATIONAL OTTAWA - The government will close Kingston Penitentiary, the country’s oldest penal institution, as well as the Leclerc prison near Montreal as part of a cost-cutting effort. quit politics, but refused to resign his parliamentary seat, angering Necas. A number of prominent members and lawmakers of Public Affairs led by deputy chairman Karolina Peake walked out earlier this week and are forming a new group that may replace the party in the government. ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Rocker and gun rights advocate Ted Nugent was expected to plead guilty Tuesday to transporting a black bear he illegally killed in Alaska. A plea agreement with federal prosecutors signed by Nugent says he illegally shot and killed the bear in May 2009 after wounding another bear in a bow hunt. The bow incident counted toward a state seasonal limit of one bear. Nugent didn’t know he was breaking the law, said his attorney, Wayne Anthony Ross. The agreement, filed in U.S. District Court last week, says the hunt was filmed for Nugent’s Outdoor Channel television show “Spirit of the Wild.”

Lidstrom’s career at a crossroads Nicklas Lidstrom is in an unfamiliar position, on two fronts. For one, the 42-yearold Swede saw his hockey season come to an end in April, an oddity because his season usually doesn’t end until at least May - and often June. And two, Lidstrom skated off the ice April 20 following his team’s elimination by the Nashville Predators not knowing for certain whether he’d ever wear the Detroit Red Wings uniform again. So will Lidstrom call it quits after a spectacular 20year career during which he won seven Norris Trophies as the NHL’s best defenceman and led the Wings - his only big-league club - to four Stanley Cups? He was also in Lady Byng contention most years, averaging one minor penalty every six games during his storied

career. He was the Conn Smythe winner in 2002. When it comes to NHL defencemen, one starts with Bobby Orr and then doesn’t fall too far back to Lidstrom at No. 2. Sorry, Doug Harvey. Sorry Brad Park, Denis Potvin and Ray Bourque. You’ve been edged out. Detroit coach Mike Babcock told reporters in the playoffs that Lidstrom was “too good to quit,” hoping the flattery and another $6 million contract would persuade him to return for one more season. Lidstrom played only 70 games this year - a career low thanks to a couple of minor injuries - and he was held without a point in the Wings’ five playoff games. The playoffs is when Lidstrom’s “A” game usually elevated to “A-plus” as he quarterbacked the Wings’ potent Datsyuk-Zetterberg-

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist Franzen power play unit to goal after goal, playoff win after playoff win. An 11-time all-star, Lidstrom still has more game than most NHL defencemen, using his brain, guile and smooth skating to offset some of the speed he has lost. He often played like he had his own puck. Lidstrom never once missed the playoffs in his long career, pacing the Wings to 32 series’ victories against 15 losses. He holds 11 Detroit records and has an astounding career plus-minus mark of +450. He’ll never be

revered at Gordie Howe’s stature by Red Wing hockey fans, but he’s probably tied for second with Steve Yzerman. Lidstrom said that he will make a decision on retirement (or one more year) early this summer. One decision that won’t be tough will be the one for Hall of Fame voters putting Lidstrom into the hallowed hall as soon as he’s eligible. • Snipped from Dwight Perry’s Sideline Chatter in the Seattle Times: “We conquered polio, defeated the Nazis, put a man on the moon,” noted Joseph Tout, a New York Post reader. “My question is this: Why can’t we stop the ‘Get in the hole!!!’ guy at golf tournaments?” • Perry again: “NFL Magazine is folding after Puzzle on page 28

Clermont hangs up cleats after 10 years Provincial REGINA - Jason Clermont has called it a career. The Saskatchewan Roughriders slotback announced his retirement Tuesday after 10 CFL seasons. The move was hardly a surprise as the Riders had long stated that Clermont, a Regina native, didn’t figure in their 2012 plans. What’s more, on the club’s website Clermont’s No. 82 jersey has been assigned to Justin Harper, an American in his first season with the CFL team. Clermont spent the first seven seasons of his CFL career with the B.C. Lions before finishing up with the Riders, appearing in consecutive Grey Cup losses to the Montreal Alouettes with the Saskatchewan franchise (2009-’10).

National TORONTO - Marc Zanetti has played his last game in the Ontario Hockey League. The league suspended the Ottawa 67’s overage defenceman for the rest of the playoffs on Tuesday for a kicking incident in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final with the Niagara IceDogs. The Ottawa captain kicked Niagara’s Tom Kuhnhackl in the head after the winger scored to give the IceDogs a 1-0 lead in the third period. No penalty was called on the play and Niagara went on to win the game 2-1 in overtime. The OHL suspended Zanetti indefinitely after Game 1, pending a review. The league banned the 20-year-old for the remain-

der of the OHL playoffs, but said it would consider an application from the 67’s to allow Zanetti to return if the team qualifies for the MasterCard Memorial Cup. This is the second suspension of the post-season for the Richmond Hill, Ont., native. Zanetti received a five-game ban for a spearing incident in warmups prior to Game 2 of Ottawa’s Eastern Conference quarter-final series against the Belleville Bulls. CALGARY - Canada’s roster for the IIHF World Hockey Championship is nearly set. Duncan Keith and Patrick Sharp of the Chicago Blackhawks have both agreed to join the team for next month’s tournament, leaving just one opening at forward and another at defence.

General manager Kevin Lowe was expected to fill those spots quickly with the team scheduled to play two exhibition games in Zurich later in the week. Keith is the third member of the team who won Olympic gold in Vancouver, joining Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. At age 30, Sharp is the senior member of the squad so far. He’s also one of five players who scored at least 30 goals in the NHL this season. Canada opens the tournament in Helsinki with a game against Slovakia on May 4. International SAKHIR, Bahrain Bahrain got exactly the type of incident-free Formula One race it wanted on Sunday, and Sebastian Vettel got

exactly the result he needed to kickstart his bid for a third straight championship title. On a day when F1 could again focus more on racing than politics, the Bahrain Grand Prix was held without a hitch as Vettel completed a wire-to-wire victory in a race that was completely unaffected by the ongoing anti-government protests that escalated this week. Vettel, the two-time defending champion who had struggled with the pace of his Red Bull car at the start of the season, held off a charging Kimi Raikkonen to secure his first victory of the year in an event that was relatively free of on-track incidents as well. CAIRO - Egypt’s interim government has cancelled the national cup competition, ending all football in the country this season. The Egyptian Football Association says that the Ministry of Interior won’t allow Egyptian Cup games, scheduled from April 30 to May 30, to go ahead because of security concerns. The EFA says the ministry also wants court proceedings in connection with the deadly Port Said stadium riot to be completed before football resumes. League games were called off last month after

74 people were killed in fan clashes at a game in the Mediterranean city on Feb. 1. Around 75 suspects are on trial over the violence. The case was postponed until next month after disturbances in court last week. INDIANAPOLIS It’s official: Andrew Luck will be the No. 1 choice in Thursday night’s NFL draft. Rather than keeping the NFL’s worst-kept secret under wraps until Luck’s name rolled off the lips of commissioner Roger Goodell, general manager Ryan Grigson decided there was no reason to delay the inevitable: Luck will become the successor to Peyton Manning as Indianapolis’ quarterback and the new face of the franchise. “We didn’t the see the point in prolonging what the world already knows,” Grigson told reporters Tuesday after a voluntary mini-camp workout. “It’s about Andrew and we wanted to do the right thing by him.” The decision is no surprise. Last Wednesday, Grigson said the Colts had made a decision about who to take with the first choice but declined to say whether it would be Luck, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, or Robert Griffin III, the Heisman winner.

“I’ll Walk Alone” By Mary Higgins Clark (Simon and Schuster, $7.99) Reviewed by Rose M. Croke There is good reason why Mary Higgins Clark is called “America’s Queen of Suspense.” In “I’ll Walk Alone,” now available in paperback, Higgins Clark delivers yet another suspense-filled whodunit -- her 30th in a long, illustrious career as one of America’s most beloved and prolific suspense writers. The novel’s protagonist isAlexandra “Zan” Moreland, a gifted interior designer who is haunted by the kidnapping of her 3-year-old son from Central Park. On what would be Matthew’s fifth birthday, photos surface in the media that implicate her in her only son’s mysterious disappearance. To add to her misery, a stranger has stolen her identity and is impersonating her. Zan’s fledging design business is threatened as her bank accounts are cleaned out and charges to her credit cards mount.

Under surveillance by the media and enduring the relentless scrutiny of the police and her bitter ex-husband, Zan begins to have panic attacks and blackouts that further discredit her sanity. With the help of Alvirah Meehan, an amateur sleuth and one of Higgins Clark’s most beloved recurring characters, Zan sets out to clear her name and find the person(s) behind this elaborate scheme. She focuses her blame squarely on Bartley Longe, her one-time mentor and now vindictive business rival. With her reputation in tatters and overwhelming circumstantial evidence against her, Zan embarks on a mission to prove her innocence and find her son. The story moves along at a fast-clip as Zan pieces together who is trying to destroy her and how it all ties in to the fateful day her son went missing. As the pieces fall into place, Higgins Clark delivers her trademark fast-paced, race-against-time conclusion that never fails to entertain. A classic page turner, “I’ll Walk Alone” is a timely cautionary tale about identity theft expertly woven into a torn-from-the-headlines story about a missing child and a mother’s endurance under the glaring hot lamp of suspicion.

Self-cleaning underwear, the future of soldiers’ uniforms • It was Canadian author Saul Bellow who made the following sage observation: “You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.” • The U.S. military has created self-cleaning underwear. Yep. It seems they wanted skivvies that soldiers could wear for several weeks without changing. Nanoparticles and chemicals in the fabric repel liquids and bacteria. • More books have been written about Abraham Lincoln than about any otherAmerican president -- more than 15,000

to date. • It is only to be assumed that Arabella Young, a Massachusetts woman who died in 1771, was considered to be a bit too talkative. Otherwise there would have been no need for the following epitaph: “Here lies as silent clay / Miss Arabella Young, / Who on the 21st of May / Began to hold her tongue.” • Be glad that you did not have the misfortune to be in Bangladesh during record storms in 1985. You might have been brained by the record hailstones, some weighing more than 2 pounds each. • You might not be surprised to learn that among his Hollywood friends, screen legend and notori-

ous drinker Humphrey Bogart was nicknamed Whiskey Straight. • The founders of the Arby’s chain were a pair of brothers, Forest and Leroy Raffel. They wanted to name the original restaurant Big Tex, but found that the name was already owned by someone else. They settled on Arby’s to represent the initials R.B.’s for Raffel Brothers. *** Thought for the Day: “I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat, and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn’t my fault that I’m not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?” -- Yogi Berra (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cleaning a Rusty Grill Q: I left my propane grill out on the back deck over the winter. We didn’t get much snow or rain, and actually used it from time to time, so I didn’t cover it. Now I notice some rust on the underside of the grill. What’s the best way to clean it and prevent it from happening again? -- Janice B., Columbia, Md. A: You can buy a cleaner that removes rust stains

at your local hardware or home-improvement store, or if the rust is mostly surface-based, try wiping the area first with a damp cloth. If not all the rust is removed, try scrubbing the area with a steel-wire brush or steel wool. If the interior of the grill or the grates are rusty or caked with old charcoal and burnt-on food, use the same cleaning methods to scrub them off. Then, clean the interior well (for readers who use charcoal grills, remove the old ashes and charcoal and then clean). Once clean, you’ll want to seal the rust-damaged areas. On the outside of your

grill, a high-temperature paint will keep air and moisture away from the metal and won’t flake away quickly. The interior should be cleaned between each grilling session and closed to prevent rain from entering. Grill racks should be washed after cleaning and each use, and a thin coat of cooking oil sprayed or rubbed on them so they stay rust-free between uses. If you’re not going to use the grill for a long time, say several weeks, regardless of the season it should be cleaned, covered with a grill cover and moved out of direct rain and sunlight. Some owners coat the exte-

rior of the grill with a thin coat of cooking oil if they plan to store it for some time. HOME TIP: Got a tough cleanup of grill racks? Make a foamy vinegarbaking soda paste and apply to the racks, let them sit for a few minutes, then scrub away burnt-on food and grease. For her baby shower, we decided to get together and cook her several meals that could be frozen and go right from the freezer to the oven. This way, she has many meals to grab in the first few sleepless weeks.” -- E.S. in Mississippi • Need to save money grocery shopping? Studies show that if you shop when the store is least busy, you’ll make smarter decisions. Try shopping at off-peak hours, such as later in the evening or early in the morning. Or try your store on Wednesday, traditionally the least busy day of the week. • “I was making cookies last week and needed to roll out the dough, but I couldn’t find my rolling pin anywhere. In a pinch, I pulled a bottle of wine off my wine rack and wrapped it tightly in plastic wrap. It did the trick. I’m thinking I just might save the next empty bottle, clean the label off and use it as a rolling pin. I can store it right there in my rack!” -- O.V. in Oregon • Add shredded veggies to tomato sauce to up the veggie quotient. Many vegetables can be included without adding many calories and will not change the taste that much. Try carrots,

squash or sweet potatoes. You can even add a tablespoon or two of canned, pureed pumpkin. • “I like the smaller size of kids’ meals at the drivethru. I save the toys in a box, then I drop them off with a teacher friend to use as rewards in her classroom.” -- A Reader, via email • “I found a bunch of guttering at a garage sale super-cheap, and was inspired to bring it INSIDE my house. I purchased end pieces at my local hardware store and cut the gutters to fit inside my closet. They line the wall all the way up in horizontal rows. I use them to keep shoes, purses, even small baskets of accessories. It’s wonderful.” -- T. in Tennessee Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 2012

Strawberries are great served with spinach Farmers markets and grocery stores are bursting with strawberries. Strawberries are always a nutritious choice and a wonderful treat. The strawberry got its name from the common practice of growing berries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts. A member of the rose family, the strawberry sometimes gives off a rose-like aroma. Many speculate about how the luscious fruit was discovered. It is known that the strawberry goes as far back as the Romans and perhaps even the Greeks. Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin

C, an antioxidant that may reduce the risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. It helps protect the skin from bruising, helps heal cuts and keeps gums healthy. One cup of strawberries provides 3 grams of fiber and only 46 calories. Strawberries also have potassium, which can help maintain a healthy blood pressure. When picking or buying packages of strawberries, look for ripe, shiny and brilliantly colored berries without any soft or brown patches. Never buy strawberries that are green or hard, or that look dry, dull or wrinkled. When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there is a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed. Always dispose of any berries that have signs of

mildew or are rotten, as they’ll contaminate the rest. Refrigerating strawberries ruins the flavor, and the strawberry aroma is easily picked up by other foods in the refrigerator. Store the berries in a cool place. Strawberries should be lightly rinsed, not washed before serving, and eaten as soon as possible. This Strawberry and Spinach Salad with blue cheese crumbles and a balsamic-based dressing is a “berry good way to serve strawberries.
