With the announcement of this theatre season’s second production, it’s apparent the two plays coming through the Souris Valley Theatre this year are an odd couple themselves. The second production this summer at the Souris Valley Theatre will be The Odd Couple, a familiar story that has been widely adapted and features a pair of men thrust into each other’s company despite their differences. The fun comes from the story’s central odd couple: Felix, neat and uptight, Oscar, easygoing and aloof. The Neil Simon play, first performed on Broadway in 1965, follows the two characters as they become roommates having both divorced form their spouses. Kenn McLeod, the theatre’s artistic director, said the fun and familiarity of the characters makes The Odd Couple a great choice. “It is a classic story. That’s one of the reasons for programming it. Even if they aren’t familiar with the story, they know the characters,” he said. “All the way down to Bert and Ernie, they’re the puppet odd couple, so it is that story. It’s about men trying to start again and finding that ability to work together.” This production, with its central story revolving around the relationship of a pair of men suddenly living in close quarters, and the theatre’s first production of the season, The Marvelous Wonderettes, featuring an allfemale cast, the theatre will present two very different

plays both in character and perspective. “That was another reason for the programming of it. We want to introduce as many great performers to Estevan and to that theatre as possible. Finding ways to fill our season with both ladies and gentlemen and shows that can appeal to an audience of ladies and gentlemen” was of primary concern, added McLeod. The Odd Couple has became a timeless story, first produced in the 1960s, it has enjoyed the success of movies, television series and countless stage productions since its first run on Broadway. McLeod noted that recently there was a production at the Arts Club in Vancouver, and Matthew Perry of Friends fame, is producing a new TV show, a reboot of the original. “It’s even going back on television. The story is still something,” said McLeod. “It’s a great, fun piece by Neil Simon, who is one of the premier American comic
playwrights. The best thing about Simon is that most of his stuff has a lot of really great heart, too. It’s not just chuckles and laughs and farce, it has a lot of meaning and great heart to it.” The theatre is also putting out a casting call locally for a group of gentlemen to perform on stage during the opening scene around a poker table. There are four poker buddies of the main characters Felix and Oscar who appear in the first act. “What I was hoping to do, and I thought might be quite interesting, is pooling up some of the local Estevan talent and seeing if anybody has an inkling to come and be part of the production and get a crack at being up on that stage,” said McLeod. “I’m hoping to cast the four poker players as locally as possible.” He said some kind of stage experience helps but isn’t necessary if the right people are determined and can commit some time to rehearsal as well as the per-
formances. “Sometimes it’s just about the desire to be there,” he said, noting the rehearsal schedule wouldn’t be as rigorous as the main cast, but there will be some time required to get comfortable with the scenes. McLeod said the comedy will round out the theatre season well, as the theatre brings familiar music as well as familiar characters. “Bringing on a comedy where people know the story or know the characters or they might have been roommates with those characters in their life, seem to be a pretty good fit this summer. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We have some really good shows to make people stick around for the weekend instead of always going to the lake.” The Odd Couple will run from July 23 to Aug. 9 playing from Tuesday to Saturday evenings and a matinee each Thursday afternoon. The Marvelous Wonderettes begins July 3.

Better ways to see the neighbourhood
Estevan is a small city of people who love their vehicles, be they cars, SUVs or trucks, and most definitely trucks. Sure, the Energy City isn’t the most walkable for a variety of reasons, but driving within the city is still wildly out of control, a pastime as much as it is a convenience. It’s excusable throughout the winter but with the pleasant spring air surrounding us, pushing us out the door and encouraging forays out into the natural world, the excuses run thin. The sidewalks are intermittent and uneven and the dust is suffocating, but there are still some great things you can see when walking around the city, breathing in real air instead of a vehicle’s AC. There are experiences to be had that are impossible from within the remote confines of your vehicle. These aren’t necessarily magical experiences, like a Disney princess’s twirling jaunt through the forest chatting with the lively creatures, but it’s still something. When driving, you’re just a spectator to the community, but on a walk, we’re all active players. How many people have stopped to read the plaque by the courthouse outlining the little bit of history in Estevan that saw striking coal miners killed? Many new people to the city will have no idea those events
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers even occurred 80 years ago. Many residential stalwarts will be aware of the strike, maybe even well versed in its significance to the country’s labour laws, but have they stopped to investigate the plaque and read the names of those who were killed? The only way to do it is to stroll down to the corner of Fourth Street and Souris Avenue. I’ll bet most people haven’t read it or haven’t noticed it. I encourage you to go read it sometime. It’s only a 30-second stop on your way to wherever it is you need to be. It won’t throw your life or your day out of whack. Has anybody gone for a walk and stopped to admire the quartet, jamming out at the top of the hill between the Comp and Spruce Ridge? Have you walked along Valley Street and enjoyed the views below of the prairie stretching wide? The portrait is a little obscured by the coal-powered station looming large, but it’s still a nice place to exercise our gaits above the Souris Valley
that has given its name to so many organizations in the area. Maybe stop to pay a little attention to the Estevan Collegiate Institute’s plaque and see what that’s all about. If you walk around town for a half hour, it’s not uncommon to meet no other pedestrians, but every now and then you do and you get to say “hello” or “good day” or “how ’bout that weather? Somethin’, eh?” It would be nice to see more people taking strides along the various streets and avenues, getting trucks off the road and lessening the dust that’s kicked up by the ferociously spinning tires. It’s easy to ignore the small but special things around your city when you’re only ever moving around at 50 km/h in a noisy box. It’s easy to ignore all the history in the city because it’s history and it’s not going anywhere. There will always be time to check it out later, but there’s always a reason to go later, to push it back to another day and another time. When we slow things down, not to a snail’s pace but just to a brisk walk, we can see so many more things in our communities. We can more completely experience our neighbourhoods. Our lives are spinning fast enough. Sometimes it’s a great relief to slow things down, to get some fresh air and to just walk around.
Farmers hold partial key to flood prevention While the threat of this year’s spring snowmelt causing much more than some localized flooding seems remote, every time water starts to run, thoughts turn to how we can control potential flooding better. Sitting here in Yorkton, I am aware of what flooding can cause. When severe rains hit July 1, 2010, large parts of the city were drenched. Both homes and businesses were destroyed and for weeks as a journalist it was the ongoing story in my world. And yes, I was among the hundreds who ended up bailing water from their living rooms and replacing carpets and sleeping in the garage a couple of nights through the worst of the aftermath. In Yorkton, the flood created some near-immediate government reaction. Since July 1, 2010, helping to prepare the city for a future flood situation has become a municipal priority with hundreds of thousands being invested on water flow studies, flood water retention ponds and ditching. The City also hosted a major conference on flood waters, going as far as to have speakers from the Netherlands, a country with a long history of dealing with water and its control. The conference identified one thing, which I suspect we all knew, but having it confirmed never hurts, and that is that on the Canadian Prairies how water moves across farmland has a lot to do with whether river and ditch flooding will occur, and how severe that flooding might be.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist Farmers hold the key to water flows in very general terms. On a more specific level what one farmer does will impact his neighbour’s down flow. We have seen these situations repeatedly. A farmer has a series of sloughs on his land. While they are natural reservoirs to hold run-off in the spring or big rain events and do provide natural wildlife habitats, they are seen as unproductive acres in terms of adding to the operation’s bottom line. With always tight margins, the lure to have those slough acres growing crop is always significant. In many cases, farmers will eventually opt for draining the sloughs. Such an operation might net the farmer some additional acres to grow crop, but it pushes the water previously held in those sloughs onto a neighbour’s land. As the process of slough and pothole drainage extends farm to farm, ditches and small streams are gorged with water they were not designed to handle, and rushing torrents of water start to take out bridges, culverts and roads.
So a question naturally arises, that being whether farmers, in particular those with land in flood prone areas, should have greater restrictions placed on them in terms of drainage of their property? No one likes the idea of greater regulation in terms of making decisions that can impact a bottom line. That said, there is also a need to respect the greater good associated with a situation. Hundreds of thousands live in Winnipeg, a city prone to flooding each spring. Decisions made on drainage all the way up river into Saskatchewan contribute to the potential of flooding. Is a few acres of slough gained on a Saskatchewan farm worth increasing flood damage in the Manitoba city? Reasonably the answer is one where everyone with a watershed takes responsibility for the system, and that would generally mean no more drainage, if not a redevelopment of some of the on-land storage already lost. That said, it is also time the people living on a flood plain in Manitoba realized they might want to champion the cause of taxpayer dollars compensating farmers for keeping potholes and sloughs, since it is their property being protected by the decision not to drain and seed those acres. For the overall system to function better, farmers shouldn’t have to limit their production capacity without those that decision benefits helping offset at least some of the potential returns.

CRA temporarily cuts off access to site National OTTAWA - The Canada Revenue Agency says it has temporarily cut off public access to its electronic services over security concerns. The agency says it shut down access to protect the security of taxpayer information. It says it is working to restore safe and secure access as soon as possible. The agency offered no other information beyond a terse statement on its website. This is a busy time of year for the tax agency, as people file returns electronically and track the progress
of refunds online. As of the end of March, the agency had received 6.7 million returns, with 84 per cent filed electronically. *** OTTAWA - Democratic Reform Minister Pierre Poilievre has launched an all-out attack on Canada’s chief elections watchdog. He is accusing chief electoral officer Marc Mayrand of opposing the controversial, proposed overhaul of elections laws because he wants more power for himself, a bigger budget and less accountability. Moreover, Poilievre
says Mayrand is making “astounding,” “amazing” and untrue allegations as he grasps at straws to defeat Bill C-23, the so-called Fair Elections Act. Poilievre says he’s well aware of Mayrand’s objections to the bill but disagrees with him. And he’s reminding the chief electoral officer that he serves Parliament, not the other way around. Poilievre is testifying before a Senate committee, which has begun a “prestudy” of the bill before it has been passed by the House of Commons. A Commons committee

is simultaneously conducting hearings on the bill and has yet to consider any possible amendments. International VIENNA - The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is the winner of this year’s $1 million Birgit Nilsson Prize, officials of the prestigious classical musical award announced Wednesday. It is the first time an orchestra has been chosen since the prize was launched in 2009. Then, the choice fell on opera star Placido Domingo, who was personally picked by Nilsson and honoured three years
after her death. Conductor Ricardo Muti was picked three years later. Orchestra President Clemens Hellsberg told The Associated Press that he was honoured by the choice, describing the famed Swedish soprano as having a huge “impact on my life” as a violinist. Birgit Nilsson Foundation president Rutbert Reisch said the choice of the orchestra fit award criteria of artists “who have made the biggest contribution to classical music.” The prize is another feather in the cap of the Viennese ensemble, which

Asked whether the award finally decided the informal competition with the Berlin Philharmonic as the better orchestra, Hellsberg demurred. “I don’t think we should deal in music in terms of sports,” he said, adding that the sole mission of any orchestra is “is to reach the hearts of the audience.” While declining to say when he was informed of the pick, Hellsberg described it as “a big surprise,” because initial discussion on who should be chosen focused on individuals.

Vimy Night
The Estevan Legion No. 60 hosted its annual Vimy Ridge night on April 5, recognizing the First World War battle as a defining moment in Canada’s growth as a nation. Canada to play Colombia for World Group spot National LONDON - The Canadian Davis Cup tennis team will play Colombia in a home tie later this year. The winner of the Sept. 12-14 tie will receive a spot in the 2015 World Group. Canada had its best Davis Cup season ever in 2013, making it to the semifinals. But the Canadians lost their first-round World Group match to Japan this season and was relegated to the playoff against Colombia. The venue and surface for the best-of-five series will be announced at a later date. Canada is ranked eighth in the world while
Colombia is ranked 26th. *** VANCOUVER - The B.C. Lions signed defensive back Ryan Phillips to a contract extension that will keep him with the CFL club through the 2016 season. The nine-year veteran was a CFL all-star last year after recording 36 tackles and two interceptions over 18 regular-season games. “Ryan is one of the veteran players that we’re counting on to show our defence and our team the kind of commitment, teamwork and selflessness it’s going to take to be a champion,” Lions GM Wally Buono said in a statement. “As a four-time CFL all-star,

NEW YORK, N.Y. Former Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens wants a judge to stay an order that he share documents with his accuser in a defamation case. Clemens’ legal team filed documents in federal court in Brooklyn on Tuesday. A judge had ruled last week that Clemens needs to turn over hundreds of pages of documents to
Brian McNamee, a former Yankees strength coach. McNamee’s suit alleges Clemens defamed him after he told federal investigators and Congress that he injected Clemens more than a dozen times with steroids and human growth hormone from 1998 through 2001. Clemens’ team said he plans to appeal the judge’s order, and that the order should be stayed until that appeal is ruled on.

Spray paint tips for furniture updates on every surface (NC) With the warmer weather, now is the ideal time to bring new life to home décor. Whether your outdoor items are looking worn and weathered… or your indoor spaces need a pop of colour… spray paint is the perfect solution. To ensure your furniture update goes flawlessly, follow these few tips from the experts at Krylon, the nation’s leader in spray paint. Prep Properly Surface preparation is extremely important and the best predictor of how long your finish will last. The goal is to make your surface as smooth as possible to ensure the new paint adheres well. Remove any
loose rust or paint by lightly sanding. Next, clean surfaces with soap and water or degreaser, if necessary. Rinse and let your surface dry completely. Your surface should now be clean, dull and dry. To Prime or Not to Prime Primer prepares bare metal, wood, canvas or other materials to create a smooth surface for paint. It also seals the surface to help smoothen out blemishes, increase spray paint adhesion and improve corrosion resistance. While priming is a critical step, research shows that consumers only use a primer 50 percent of the
time. For high-quality results with fewer steps, look for a product that says no priming is required. Choosing the Right Product It is important to choose the product that meets the needs for your substrate – as well as your style. Plastic/Laminates With the popularity of ready-to-assemble furniture made of laminates or the many plastic storage items, these surfaces are prime targets for painting. However, without the right product, your project could turn out less than desirable. “Most consumers don’t realize that not all plastics are the same,” said Denise
Patterson, Krylon product manager. “In fact, most spray paints on the market will not adhere to the most popular plastics found in furniture, toys and storage. Krylon’s new Dual Superbond spray paint offers a unique formulation that promises quality adhesion to 85 percent of plastics, as well as hard-to-adhere surfaces, such as melamine and laminates.” Metal For metal surfaces – especially those that are exposed to outdoor elements – it is important to choose a product that provides rust protection. “Many products that claim rust protection only

shake your can for about two minutes. Next, hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the surface and use several thin coats of spray paint instead of one thick coat. Begin and finish your spray pattern off the object using an even side-to-side motion, releasing the tip at the end of each pass. Try to overlap your spray pattern by about one-third with each pass. As you prepare to paint new life into your home décor, these few tips and tricks will ensure your project is painless and pretty… for years to come. work when used with an additional primer,” says Patterson. “Using a combination product, such as Dual Superbond Paint + Primer ensures that all surfaces will achieve superior rust protection without a multistep process.” Wood Choosing the best spray paint for wood is dependent on the finish, use and location of your surface. A general purpose spray paint, such as Krylon ColorMaster, is an ideal choice for wood. This new product offers the widest colour selection with nearly 70 colours and finishes.
