Cheers&Jeers Cheers to the Estevan and District Music Festival. The students love to perform. We love to hear them and the awards night on Tuesday was spectacular.
Cheers to the theatre for bringing Jack Semple to Estevan. It was a fabulous concert and the acoustics and comfort are second to none. Please don’t stop bringing this form of first-rate entertainment to town.
Jeers to the folks who do not pick up after their dig. Our neighbourhood is a mess!

Ukrainian tradition celebrated through performance By Jordan Baker Of the Southeast Trader Express It took coming to Canada for a pair of Ukrainian sisters to reconnect with their culture’s traditional artistic roots. Anastasiya Shved and her sister Olga McCarthy joined the Poltava Ensemble within a year of moving to Regina from Ukraine. Shved has since moved to Estevan and continues dancing with the ensemble, travelling to Regina multiple times a week to rehearse and hone new moves and numbers. Poltava started in Regina in 1922 with the formation of a children’s string orchestra. Ukrainian immigrants sought to keep their country’s traditions alive through song and dance in their new home. Current dancer Jen Wilson’s heritage runs throughout the ensemble’s lifespan. Her great-grandfather helped build the original cultural centre where the group has rehearsed since 1928. They continue to use the building as Poltava’s home, which houses the group’s Poltava School of Ukrainian Performing Arts. The ensemble will perform in Estevan at the comprehensive school on May 3. “It’s so much fun. When you’re on the stage you’re just having the moment of your life, because you enjoying dancing. It brings good energy to you,” said Shved. “But when you hear the appreciation of people around you, it makes it so much better.” For Shved and her sister, the ensemble was a way for them to find a new community once they arrived in Canada. “As soon as we moved to Regina and found out about this group, we’ve been dancing ever since,” said Shved. “The cool thing is, in the country here, the Ukrainian people moved here, they moved in the early 1900s, so
Jen Wilson, Dave Wilson, Olga McCarthy and Anastasiya Shved to me it’s just amazing that this culture is so popular here. “For some reason it seems that only lately in Ukraine people are starting to pull out those older, traditional things. Somehow it seems they were forgotten when I was little, but now a lot more people focus on traditional dance and music. So for this being so far away in Canada and still in full bloom, that’s amazing.” Shved was more immersed in the world of ballroom dancing when she was growing up and used that background to help her when sheSUNDAY, started with Poltava. She MAY 25, 2014 now rehearses in Regina three times each week for a few hours year round. “We get tired because rehearsals are long and we’re
trying to get involved in other things like sports (and) curling, but every time I step on the stage at Mosaic, I just know I have to keep going,” said Shved. “Poltava is not just about dancing, it’s sort of a lifestyle,” added McCarthy, who recently moved to Moosomin. The group has performed all over North America and has made a number of trips to Ukraine as well. “A lot of dances are very close to my heart,” said Shved. “I grew up with books and stories with the Ukrainian costuming, greetings with bread, that’s something that we were brought up with as children. Our grandma was very traditional with Ukrainian Christmas, so see-
ing those elements in dance is something I can really relate to.” Dave Wilson, Jen’s father, often acts as emcee of the shows. His wife, and Jen’s mother, has Ukrainian heritage and with that side of the family involved in Poltava for many years, she started dancing very early in her childhood and has continued for more than 20 years. The group performs three big concerts every year with shows around Malanka, the Ukrainian New Year often occurring in mid-January, a school concert each February and a performance during the Mosaic Festival in Regina each June. “We’re accompanied by a full orchestra, so not only is there a full dance group but a full orchestra as well,” said Dave. “The music is a big part of what we do, not only the colour and dance. It’s a mixture of the different regions of Ukraine. The dances typically represent the different regions of Ukraine. It’s a big country with a lot of cultural differ-
ences. It’s a real variety of Eastern European culture.” The dances are full of high-energy acrobatics and one of the group’s long-time crowd favourite dances is called Lace Makers. “They’ve been doing it forever, we keep thinking we’ve got to change this, but people love it so much. It’s an amazing, flowing dance that people always ask for,” Dave added. The entire operation is
as authentically Ukrainian as they can make it. The dance styles and music are all inspired on the culture while the costumes are commissioned and sewn in Ukraine. “We want to share this with people in Estevan. That’s a big thing for me,” said Shved, who added that she is often telling her coworkers at SaskPower what she does with the ensemble. Tickets for the event are available at Henders Drugs.

We no longer have to tolerate this Hearing about the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association’s convention in Weyburn over the weekend caused a lot of frustration, confusion and only a little bit of outrage. I’m no Superman, but I do consider myself somewhat of a mild-mannered reporter, so the outrage was particularly vexing for me to accept. The idea of the convention was silly enough, but the inclusion of an American speaker known for his homophobic teachings was both irritating and saddening. Peter LaBarbera, who is the president of what has been identified as a hate group, was held at customs in the Regina airport upon his arrival last week, as CBSA officers had concerns about this man spreading vitriol and violating laws that prevent hate propaganda against an identifiable group. We’ve come to a point where there is no way to describe anyone with such an anti-gay mindset but as someone filled with hate and fear of people the rest of us wish to welcome and embrace. LaBarbera’s claim of opposing homosexuality on “moral” grounds is unquestionably baseless. This is no longer a matter of opinion to be debated. It is no longer a moral issue in which we need to listen to each side to hear their arguments for disagreement. There is a clear right and wrong in this instance with no room for conjecture or supposition. There is nothing wrong with homosexuality, and any suggestion of immorality is a simple claim of
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers ignorance and hatred that we no longer have to tolerate the same way we no longer have the patience to tolerate racists. We cannot be accepting of this behaviour in our communities. Sure, Estevan and Weyburn, like neighbouring cities all over the world, have a sibling’s rivalry. I would hope our councillors at City Hall wouldn’t be supportive of a pro-life convention that seriously looks to “dig deeper” into some supposed conspiratorial connection between homosexuality and abortion, as the president of the Sask. Pro-Life Association said they are doing. She said they are “studying it,” as though it wasn’t even a question that there was something to actually study. It’s mindless and our public servants know better than to legitimize these outdated ideas with a curious and sympathetic ear. Despite the Weyburn City’s faux pas in doling out a grant to the group, I will have to give it up for the people of Intolerance Free Weyburn. People like to joke around the Energy City about our neighbours in Weyburn,
but when there is a group that seeks to unite a community rather than divide it, we should give them the proverbial key to our city, even if they’re from Weyburn. LaBarbera promised to address the intolerant group who had requested he be denied entry to the country and not permitted to speak in Weyburn during his presentation on Saturday. Surely they were concerned about his attack on members of their city. Well, Lebarbara referred to them as a “Canadian Homo-Marxist” group (whatever that is), intolerant of his views and suggested they were “anti-Christian,” themselves spreading hate toward the religion as a whole, which has so notoriously been a prosecuted minority group in our society. Of course, his religious persecution claims are laughable, as he hides behind a religion that is supposed to be loving of all and accepting of the most vulnerable minorities in our society, a practise most of his fellow Christians exercise regularly. This individual’s thoughts are tiring, as are the motives of the Sask. Pro-Lifers. The only positive that can be gleaned from this, is that I’m sure the people in our communities exposed to these messages of hate are unconvinced. Our cities and towns and Canadians across the country prize acceptance and love more than we idolize mouthpieces looking to make a buck.
CWB just another competitor in the market The demise of the Canadian Wheat Board forecast by its biggest supporters seems to have been a bit overly dramatic. Of course, those who believed the end of single-desk selling would be the panacea to end all the woes of farmers with wheat, durum and barley bound for export have also missed the mark. There will be issues regarding deliveries, sales and pricing under any conceivable system, as witnessed this year with tardy rail line service, which is causing an export backlog in a year when grain supplies are massive on Prairie farms. There is even some compelling likelihood the more disciplined approach to grain handling that a single-desk seller brings to the marketplace might have aided the current situation. Ultimately, the CWB was changed by the federal government, and whether it is a great move on their part or an impending disaster will only be fully determined by looking back after several years have transpired. In the meantime, the CWB appears to be adapting pretty quickly to the new world order it finds itself operating in. The CWB recently announced the construction of its second state-of-the-art grain elevator: this one near Colonsay, Sask. Situated on the Yellowhead Highway
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist about 65 kilometres east of Saskatoon, the elevator at Colonsay will feature 42,000 metric tonnes (mT) of storage and is scheduled to open in time for the 2015 harvest. “I’m excited to be able to announce the construction of our second elevator in Colonsay so fast on the heels of our Bloom elevator announcement,” said CWB president and CEO Ian White in a prepared release. “We see significant opportunity in the Colonsay area for a fast and efficient grain-handling facility that will provide the customer service that farmers have come to expect from CWB. CWB’s growing network of modern grain-handling facilities across the Prairies will provide farmers with more choice out in the country during a critical time in the ongoing transformation of the grain industry.” The same release noted that with the announcement of the Colonsay elevator, CWB’s overall asset network now includes elevators in Manitoba and Saskatchewan,
Mission Terminal in Ontario, and Les Élévateurs des Trois-Rivières in Quebec. In addition, CWB’s two Equinox class laker vessels are scheduled to be operating in the St. Lawrence in 2015. “It won’t be long before farmers driving down the highway will be able to physically see the equity that is being built in CWB. CWB’s farmer ownership plan is designed to give farmers a stake in their value chain after privatization simply by delivering against our contracts,” said White in the release. “We have been tracking deliveries for all our farmer-customers since the 2013 harvest. As we continue to grow, the benefits to farmers will grow with us.” In terms of grain handling facility ownership, at least on the Prairies themselves, the CWB is a newcomer to the ball. But it does have some assets it can utilize to gain a foothold rather quickly. The CWB should also have some longterm export relationships in its pocket, relationships they can leverage into deals. That is good news for the system, which needs competition. It’s also good for farmers to have another player at the table with their interests closer to the heart than many international grain handlers with dividend-hungry investors who are far removed from farming.

Canadian enters NBA draft
National HONG KONG - Canada will play for seventh place at the eight-team IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy after dropping a 37-12 decision to Japan on Tuesday. Canada trailed 13-5 at the half before the Japanese pulled away. Matt Mullins of Belleville, Ont., and Djustice Sears-Duru of Oakville, Ont.,
scored tries in a losing cause. The Canadian under-20 men opened with a 37-25 loss to Namibia before bouncing back to tie Uruguay 18-18. Canada will play host winless Hong Kong in its final game Saturday. Tonga will take on Japan for the championship in a clash of 2-1-0 teams. The Canadians were
runners-up at the 2013 tournament won by Italy. The Junior World Trophy is the IRB’ second-tier under-20 event. The top 12 countries will compete at the IRB Junior World Championship in June in New Zealand. England won last year’s top-tier event, defeating Wales in the final.

was not made available for interviews after his teammates had a news conference. The Wolverines lost Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway to the NBA last year as underclassmen, but retooled well enough to win the Big Ten title and advance to an NCAA tournament regional final.

Reaping what they sow, and then what? Editorial There are several sets of feet at which the blame may be placed when the topic of undelivered grain emerges on coffee row. Where do we start and end the debate? Perhaps we can begin with the usual whipping boy, our two major railway systems. Culpable? Oh yes, very much so. What about federal and provincial governments? Certainly. Do you want to lay
something at the feet of the grain companies and their handling systems? Very much so, they’re part of the conspiracy and profit-mongering system. Mother Nature? Partially. Tough winter. Not as tough as last year, but it affects rail movement. Ma Nature will have to shoulder some of this burden. Prairie farmers? How are they to blame? Well, they had the audacity to grow a record volume of crops at the worst possible
time because you see, the big boys still hadn’t sorted out the new-look grain marketing, handling, transporting and delivery system yet, and now they have to do it under the most stressful circumstances. It’s just not fair. What we are saying obviously is that there was not one major contributing factor that has led to this current plight facing Western Canadian producers. It has been a perfect storm of nonactive, negative action and curious action that has led to

the current situation. It’s also now a wellknown fact that no matter what kind of rewards or punishments are inflicted on the participants, the problem isn’t about to go away soon. The words coming from those who portend to understand the industry indicate that moving last year’s crops to market (if the market is even still there), will take more than a year. Nobody is speculating as to what is going to be done. Nobody knows how this year’s crop, which is about to be seeded will get moved either. And we haven’t even touched the subject of price and producer revenue streams. That’s a whole set of discussions on its own, but make no mistake, the lowering of prices and respect for the Canadian grain marketing system are linked to the above-mentioned topics. The railways cannot dodge their obligations. We know they have a primary
mandate to their shareholders, and if they make more money hauling oil, vehicles, and teddy bears than they do grain … we get it. It’s big business as its finest, and we understand entitlements, big bonuses, dividend growth and quarterly pressures on financial statements. That’s how they roll, if you’ll pardon the expression. Somewhere in there though, has to be an obligation to the shippers/producers who can no longer speak up loudly on their own behalf, but still rely on the two major railways for their livelihood. As sad as that is, it’s the truth. Alternatives currently don’t exist. A relief valve … meaning a strong access to southern rail systems, is still a year or more away. Weather may have been a factor, but that is just an insipid and uninspiring response to the dilemma. We’ve had several winters in Canada since the last spike was driven. Last winter’s
blast of cold and snow was just as brutal as this years and next year’s will be tough, too. Trains become shorter in winter, so what? Do your job, take the money and keep the cycle of industries moving along please. Grain handlers enter the mix, but their bottom lines have generally been unaffected. They are like the stock brokers of the game. They make money coming and going, slow or fast. They don’t have to lose unless they are subjected to some wickedly poor management. There are tweaks that can be made to the system, such as allowing the short line rail companies to play a larger role, but overall, there has to be a team spirit built somewhere into this mess and so far, we haven’t seen it. In the meantime, we caution our producer-friends to be careful what you plant this spring. If there’s too much of it, you could be in trouble … again.
CWB building high throughput elevator The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) has announced the construction of its first state-of-the-art grain elevator west of Portage La Prairie in Bloom, Man. is underway.

The elevator is expected to be ready to receive grain for the 2015 harvest. Once completed, the facility will feature industryleading railcar loading times and 33,900 metric tonnes of storage, they said in a release that was relayed by Canadian Shipper.com on March 25. “Customer service was top-of-mind when choosing to invest in Bloom as the site for our first elevator,” said CWB president and chief executive officer Ian White. “As one of the highest efficiency elevators in Western Canada, farmers will be able to pull in and out of our elevator yard in record time.

Grain Storage
The site is easily accessible from a number of highways including the Trans-Canada and the Yellowhead, and it is located in an area with a clear need for more grain-handling capacity.” The construction of the facility began off the TransCanada Highway, four miles west of the Yellowhead Highway. The elevator will feature a 17,000 mT (metric tonne) workhouse with cleaning facilities, and 16,000 mT of steel storage capacity, a 130car loop track will facilitate fast and efficient car loading at up to 60,000 bushels per hour. The elevator will be serviced by the CN mainline. The construction marks CWB’s first construction project under its new mandate and adds to its growing asset network that includes Mission Terminal in Thunder Bay and Les Elevateurs des Trois-Rivieres in Quebec, as well as a minority interest in Prairie West Terminal.

Outram-Madigan 4-H Beef Club report By Carson Petterson Club reporter
On behalf of the OutramMadigan 4-H Beef Club, I would like to thank the Benson 4-H Beef Club for hosting the District 1 curling bonspiel in January. Our club entered two teams, a junior and senior entry. The junior team was made up of Carlee Ross, Ian Petterson, Sasha Mantei and Kyra Lainton. On the senior team wereAbbey Brokenshire, Tess Brokenshire, Cassidy Ross and Carson Petterson. We had a wonderful time. We had our weigh day on Jan. 12. We weighed our steers and learned how to run a balance beam scale as each member got to weigh their own steer. Chad Ross showed
the juniors and intermediates around the feedlot and explained the difference between whole grain and rolled grain growth rations. Crystal Ross went over the different parts of the animal with the Cloverbud members. Diamond M Ranch’s bull sale was on Feb. 9, and our club prepared and served lunch to all the buyers. Thank you to Jordan and Amber Mantei for asking us to come and help. Our club speeches were on Feb. 16. Everyone had wonderful speeches. The winner in the intermediate category was Cassidy Ross. In the junior age group, first place was Carlee Ross and second was Kiera Phillips. The Cloverbud age group
saw Kyra Lainton place first, and Kade Philips was second. Congratulations to Kyra for winning first at the district speeches that were held in Estevan on Feb. 22. Good luck to her at the regional finals in Whitewood. This year our club did the coat check at the Farmers’ Day Appreciation Supper on Feb. 27. The Spring Steer and Heifer Show was held March 7-9 in Regina, and some of our club members attended the show. We participated in a groom clinic, daily hair care, fitting and clipping demonstrations, a team grooming and judging clinic competition. Cassidy and Carlee Ross placed second in their steer weight class. The Outram-
Dont’t be STUCK unprepared this spring!
Madigan Club did well in the team grooming competition with Ian Petterson and his team receiving first place and Carlee Ross and her team placing second. We had a great time and learned new things while talking with old friends and making new ones.
