Cheers&Jeers Cheers to the letter to the editor in the Mercury April 17 regarding the garbage pickup.

Jeers to the front yard garbage pickup. I pay for back alley pickup. I am moving my garbage to the back alley again. If the garbage won’t be picked it up there, I will no longer pay for this service!

Cheers to anti-bullying. Try just once to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and then maybe you’d think twice about hurting someone. Start an epidemic of kindness. Cheers to the Women of Today luncheon and the speaker on Wednesday.

Jeers to those who are not emptying the garbage cans at the ECS in the parking lots, leaving it to blow around, and to any students who have left their garbage lying around.

Cheers to the medical teams in Estevan. They do a great job when you really need them.

Jeers to smokers who throw their cigarette butts on the ground. Now that the snow is melting you can really see them everywhere.

Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page

Jeers to the local drivers who refuse to drive defensively and more lowly during this active pothole season. It’s tough dodging the gaping holes and oncoming traffic at the same time.

Lampman’s acting shines in region drama festival It was a weekend of imagination and performance when the curtains opened in Lampman April 19. Five schools sent 130 students to perform in eight plays during the Saskatchewan Drama Association’s Region 1 Drama Festival at Lampman School on April 19 and 20. It was the third time the school hosted the festival. Christine BranyikThornton, Lampman’s drama teacher and one of the organizers of the event, was excited to see her students’ production of Boy Meets Girl: A Young Love Story, be selected by the judges to go on to the provincial festival May 9 to 11 in Regina. The play included powerhouse performances by Maya Branyik-Thornton in the role of Katie and Grade 10 student Samantha Paxman in the role of Sam. Despite the former’s gender, she was able to pull off the male lead in the story about puppy love, receiving the runner-up honour in the best performance category, second only to her production opposite, Maya. “This is a show that was really an ensemble show that didn’t look like one, said BranyikThornton, who directed the students in the play by Sam Wolfson. “It’s a twohander. There are only two actors involved, but there’s a montage that happens where we use a group of nine kids that come on stage (in a grand march) but was a completely choreographed piece that used photographs to summarize the relationship of the characters in the play on stage. It was quite beautiful to watch.

Carlyle students of the Gordon F. Kells School performed Outside the Box at the Saskatchewan Drama Association’s Region 1 Drama Festival. The playwright, Bradley Hayward, is a native of Oxbow, and it was one of two plays of his performed by southeast drama students at the festival. Samantha will be heading to the Stratford Festival this summer, while Maya will perform with the Victoria Shakespeare Society this summer before heading to the University of Alberta to begin studying theatre. One-hour production workshops followed the shows where the adjudicators could take apart and debrief the production with the students involved in the piece. Two adjudicators were on hand throughout the weekend with one at the front of the house, judging acting and directing, while the other was backstage, taking care of the technical things going on behind the scenes. M o o s o m i n ’s M c -

Naughton High School received runner-up recognition for their play, The Pitch. That production also received nods for best technical production and best visual production. L a m p m a n ’s Ti a n a Palmer received the award for best stage manager for the schools second production of the weekend, a black comedy entitled The Magic Fairy in the Microwave. Branyik-Thornton added that there was one production at the festival with a student director. Grade 11 student McKenzie Warriner of Oxbow Prairie Horizons School directed her peers in This is a Test, which opened the festival on Friday. “She did a great job.

She was given accolades by the adjudicator for her ability as a first-time director. She actually directed the senior play, said BranyikThornton. Arcola School performed It’s Not You, It’s Me, a play about break-ups that included some technical elements like water being hurled on stage. “We had some really interesting play choices this year, said BranyikThornton, adding that the technical production from McNaughton was of particular note. “They used a lot of technology in that play. It was really cool. They used a data projector, to project form the front of the house. It looked like a giant TV screen. It was neat that when you’re talking about television, they actually brought that to life on stage. She noted another play by Brad Hayward, I Don’t Want To Talk About It, was performed by Carlyle’s Gordon F. Kells students. Hayward is an Oxbow native, now working as a playwright in Toronto, and was in Lampman for the festival on the weekend. “There’s another case of someone who started out in our festival, Region 1, and now has gone on to make a living in theatre, said Branyik-Thornton. “We’ve had quite remarkable carry through with the arts here.

The trick to not offending on first meeting First impressions, as they say, are very important. They aren’t necessarily critical. Everyone has just one shot at a first impression, but we have hundreds and thousands of chances at improving on that initial contact if things go horribly wrong. It’s still a lot easier to get it right the first time than to have to make amends for some social faux pas you stumble over on that first meeting. Sure, I read Blink, Malcolm Gladwell’s book on the power of thinking without thinking. That provided plenty of insight into how our immediate opinions and basic instincts can influence what we do, how we perceive people and how our first impressions may often be great ones. If people can trust their initial impression of you and don’t desire to change it, no matter the hoops you jump through, it would be nice to get it right as soon as you can. The handshake is one of those great first impression tests. Something as simple on the outside as a handshake can mean the difference between landing a job and collecting another EI cheque and spooning out an unheated can of beans for dinner again. The importance of the handshake came to some attention recently, following a breakdown of the greeting between Bill Gates, the Microsoft Bill Gates, and the South Korean president. He shook

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers her hand with his right hand, all normal and everything OK, but his left hand he kept resting in his pants pocket. It’s apparently quite a rude gesture, and in Korean culture, it’s like slapping the other person in the face, as media in that country pointed out. If you’re upsetting an entire nation of people with your handshake, you’re doing it wrong and leaving a terrible first impression. Handshakes are important. In college, one of my professors spent about a half hour talking to us about handshakes, going around the room and grabbing people’s hands to demonstrate all the wrong ways to do it. I remember this because when she landed on me, she just wouldn’t release my hand. We exchanged a lot of palm sweat that day. I consulted with my friend Nick Marcuz on how to give the perfect handshake that leaves a great first impression. He assured me he knows exactly what he’s talking about, and he is somewhat well cultured, so I believe him. Allowing me to paraphrase, he outlined it thusly: the right thumb should

make a sharp 90-degree angle with the rest of the hand, and it’s that corner that should first make contact with the corner the recipient makes with his or her hand. Then, and this is the important part Bill Gates is missing, place your left hand gently beneath the already cupped hands while applying an appropriate amount of pressure in your initial grip. There is a little more to it than that, but that’s how John F. Kennedy shook hands. Considering JFK’s rise to power and luck with the ladies, the two-handed handshake certainly worked wonders for him. There are other things that can keep you from blowing your first impression. Eye contact is always important too. Nobody likes someone who’s shifty and has wandering eyes. How much eye contact can be tricky to get just right, and though I don’t believe there is an exact science to it, I find a nice 75-25 split is an appropriate amount of eye gazing on a first meeting. There are plenty of other things to avoid, like never assuming a woman is pregnant, not sharing your brilliant idea to settle things down between Israel and Palestine, and not airing out your boss’s dirty laundry with your new friend in case they know him too. There is an art to first impressions, and while I certainly haven’t mastered it, it’s something I don’t tend to stress over anymore.

Farmers must be wary of tough times in good times It was interesting reading a story in a recent farm publication where it was noted experts were cautioning farmers not to overspend in the current good times. For the grain sector at least, it has been a perfect storm of late. Everything that could happen to push prices higher, and keep them there, has converged in the last few years. We have seen weather pressure in large grain exporting areas including the United States grain belt; a generally stronger commodity sector, which, when it rallies, carries grain with it; a growing wealth in emerging economic powerhouses, particularly China, Korea and India; and a new demand sector with the emergence of biofuels from grains and oilseeds. The stronger prices have helped the operational bottom line on grain farms look far better the last few years. And the buoyancy in prices has also pushed farmland demand higher, and that means better prices, so farmers are gaining equity value in the land they already have. The land price situation occurred in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, a time when farmers bought land in the fall and were

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist gaining equity over the winter before ever planting a crop. Bankers bought the equity gains hook, line and sinker and were eager to lend farmers money based on the increasing values, and farmers went along for the ride. Then interest rates exploded, surpassing 20 per cent, and farmers were soon gathering at farm gate protests to try and hold off the sheriff and foreclosure actions. Now there are no real indicators suggesting skyrocketing interest rates, but farmers should always be aware that commodity prices are tied to some cosmic yo-yo. They may be high for a time, but they will decline again too. It is likely the bottom of the decline curve will be higher than in the past, but that does not mean the lows will mean

black ink on farms. Remember that costs are constantly climbing for machinery, labour, fuel and fertilizer too. The increased spending power of the Far East is a trend that will continue long term, but not necessarily without bumps on the road. A stagnant U.S. economy with no clear plan of recovery, and teetering economies in Europe will not suffer in isolation. They will be a drag on the world economic situation. The impact of biofuel production is also likely to decline into the future. To begin with, markets are rather elastic and adapt to new demands rather quickly, so the impact from biofuel demand is already factored into the market reality. And that demand may actually decline rather than grow. While demand for biofuels may see an expansion in technology to use everything from ocean plankton to city garbage is likely to turn the sector away from farm grains and oilseeds. The experts are right in cautioning farmers to remember the good times today will not last forever, and markets are going to eventually fluctuate lower once more.

Asbestos registry approved Provincial REGINA - Saskatchewan has become the first province to make reporting of asbestos in public buildings mandatory. The province passed legislation Thursday that requires government buildings and hospitals to post on an online registry whether they contain asbestos. The legislation, named Howard’s Law, was introduced by the Opposition NDP last fall in honour of Howard Willems, a former building inspector who died from mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that comes from inhaling asbestos fibres. The man’s stepson, Jesse Todd, says Willems would be pleased that the bill has passed. “It’s something that he worked so hard for and it’s what he fought for the last two years of his life, so it’s a huge victory for him,” said Todd. National O T TAWA - T h e Speaker of the House of Commons has cleared the way for a bit of free-for-

all politicking prior to the daily question period. Andrew Scheer has told MPs if they want to deliver a member’s statement in the House and aren’t on a party-approved list, they’d better get up on their feet and compete for a chance to be heard. Tuesday’s ruling could well mean MPs might soon be seen bobbing up from their seats trying to catch Scheer’s eye in order to get the floor.

The decision, intended to settle a dispute that pitted backbench Conservative MPs against their party’s tight control over who can speak prior to question period, Scheer said members need only rise to signal their intent. “If members want to be recognized, they will have to actively demonstrate that they wish to participate,” he said. “They have to rise in their places and seek the floor.”

Conservative MP Mark Warawa complained a month ago that his privileges were breached when the party whip refused to allow him to make a statement in the House about sex-selective abortion. Whip Gordon O’Connor said it’s up to parties to decide who delivers these statements and urged the Speaker to leave the matter alone. Other backbenchers have supported Warawa.

Blue Bombers expect turnaround following loss National WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced that the team posted a $758,307 loss last year, blaming costly delays in building their new home for the disappointing economic performance. The club released its 2012 financial report Tuesday and said while the team had an overall operating

profit of $726,930, “exceptional costs for the development of Investors Group Field and a loss from the write-down of Canad Inns Stadium turned the team’s bottom line from black to red. The Bombers were supposed to play in their new $200-million facility at the University of Manitoba campus last year, but

weather delays hindered construction and forced the team to continue using Canad Inns. Investors Group Field is expected to be ready this season, with a practice run taking place on May 26 for a multi-denominational prayer event. A Bombers exhibition game is scheduled for June 12 against Toronto and a sold-out Taylor Swift

concert is slated for June 22. The loss was a sharp turnabout from the 2011 financial report, which saw the Bombers take in $3.01 million in net earnings from operations and an overall net profit of $2.3 million after stadium development costs. Winnipeg did have some good news on Tuesday, announcing season ticket sales for this year

had climbed past the 23,000 mark, up from last year’s record high of 22,050. *** CALGARY - Threetime Olympic gold medallist Cherie Piper has retired from the Canadian women’s hockey team. The 31-year-old forward from Toronto is the third player to make that announcement in the past week

following forward Sarah Vaillancourt of Sherbrooke, Que., and goaltender Kim St. Pierre of Chateauguay, Que. Piper won Olympic gold in 2002, 2006 and 2010. She had 40 goals and 78 assists in 111 career games over 12 seasons for Canada. Piper last played for Canada at the 2011 world hockey championship.

AVAILABLE BACHELORETTE Lonely......but trying to make the best of it! A great catch at 49. 5’6", 139lbs, a widow, pretty & feminine. I enjoy ďŹ shing, camping, dirt bikes, horses, dinning out, reading, gardening & would love to travel. I have two children, a daughter & a son, who are in their 20’s. After the death of my husband it took me a long time to come to the reality that I was indeed alone. We were childhood sweethearts. That was some time ago & I am at peace with it now. I am looking for love the second time around. I believe in love & commitment. I am fortunate to have found love & I hope to ďŹ nd it again. I would like a man with the same values as me, a country lifestyle, loves animals & the outdoors who is seeking a stable woman in his life.
