Lara Spencer, former host of “Antiques Roadshow, tells readers how she regularly scours local flea markets, estate sales and thrift shops, and transforms her secondhand finds into first-class design elements and conversation pieces. Although Spencer coanchored “Good Morning America, this book is about her other life as an interior designer and antiques dealer. The only mention of a celebrity is the foreword by comedienne Kathy Griffin, whose home Spencer decorated with furniture pieces she found at flea markets, estate sales, auctions, thrift shops and on eBay. When she was a young girl, Spencer ’s mother would take her “sale-ing

every weekend. That spelling is intentional, since yard “sale-ing didn’t require a boat, only a car with enough space to haul their prized secondhand finds home. In fact, the book’s title comes from the bumper sticker on her mother’s station wagon: “I Brake for Yard Sales. Spencer advises not to approach decorating too seriously. “Figure out what makes you happy and go for it, she affirms. Stunning before-and-after photographs provide step-by-step advice on what to look for while shopping and how to get high style for low prices by using the three R’s of decorating on a budget: Rescue, Recycle and Reinvent. Would you ever think of using a vinyl shower curtain to reupholster the fabric on

your kitchen chairs? Spencer did, and the results were ingenious and super thrifty. Spencer has a keen eye for finding diamonds in the rough. In fact, she used to frequent the Salvation Army thrift shop in New York City. Her persistence paid off when she discovered a pair of authentic numbered Picasso lithographs priced for just $35! Readers might not be so lucky in their own treasure hunts, but “I Brake for Yard Sales will supply valuable information, ideas and inspiration on creating personal spaces that reflect the people, places and things they love without breaking the bank. Local team takes on Tough Mudder Who is the toughest mudder of them all? A local team of Matt Bakke, Scott Curtis, Chris Gould and Dustin Wilson is heading to Toronto this weekend to prove exactly how tough they are. Dubbed The Pain Train, the team is heading to Tough Mudder, an extreme obstacle course originally designed by the British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit and above all, camaraderie. The team is perhaps the most important part of getting through the 10- to 12-mile course. It is said the 19-obstacle course can’t be completed alone, in part because everyone needs a helping hand to pull them over a wall, and when your spirits dip because you’re stuck in mud or ice-cold water, it takes a teammate to get you pumped back up again. “There’s no way you could do it by yourself because there’s quarter pipes that you need somebody to boost you and another guy to give you a hand,â€? said Wilson. “You kind of gotta go as a team.â€? “It’s not about beating everyone else,â€? said Gould. “They promote teamwork and helping everybody to get to the finish.â€? Curtis made it clear their team is there to have fun, not to get too stressed about the challenge. “We aren’t breaking any land speed records,â€? he said. “We’re gonna stick together as a group and make sure we do all finish,â€? added Wilson. “There’s some (obstacles) where it says right on there that if you aren’t comfortable ‌ swimming up to 50 yards then just go to the next one.â€? He said there aren’t 20-foot walls around an obstacle that force everyone to complete each one. If there is an obstacle you don’t want to complete, it can simply be avoided. “They said there’s no cheating. If you can’t do something, or don’t want to, just go around it. You’re doing it for yourself, not for anybody else,â€? said Gould. Wilson said this event will hopefully be a trial run to see how much they like it. He said there is an event next summer in Calgary, and if this first one goes well, they may plan on attending that one

Three members of The Pain Train team headed to Tough Mudder in Toronto this weekend are, from left, Chris Gould, Dustin Wilson and Scott Curtis. The fourth member of the team is Matt Bakke. as well. Wilson is already optimistic about whether they will like it or not. “I’d imagine that it’s going to be something we enjoy, he said. “I heard about it from one of my buddies. He kind of showed me the video of it, and I think everyone, when they see that initial video, they kind of get pumped to do it. I got excited for it, and then I convinced another guy. They were going to go as a team of six, but they’ve slipped back to four who will take on the course in a field near Barrie. “It looks like a lot of fun, but then you think about it and wonder if you’re actually going to make it, added Gould. “It looks like a lot of running, but they said you don’t have to be a marathon runner to do it, said Wilson. “There’s a lot of stopping and bottlenecks at certain things where only a couple of people can get through it at a time. “I’m looking forward to them bottlenecks, added Curtis. The Tough Mudder challenge is just that: a challenge. It’s not a race. The spirit of the event isn’t to beat anybody. Because of the nature of the obstacles, the feeling of accomplishment comes from just crossing the finish line, no matter how long it takes. “My main goal was I wanted it to be fun, not

be dragging myself across this thing and wanting to quit, said Wilson. “As far as training, it’s maybe given us some motivation to go to the gym and go for a run. The final obstacle is ominously called electroshock therapy, and it’s pretty self-explanatory. Open wires dangle above participants’ heads waiting to give off 10,000 volts of electricity. It probably doesn’t need to be said, but that’s what The Pain Train team is looking forward to the least. “Mentally, it’s just about making yourself do it, because it’s so easy to just say ‘screw this’, added Gould. “You have to just push yourself. “That one seems pretty intense to be running through that, added Wilson. They’ve all watched clips of tough mudders running through that final obstacle and they said the shock does knock people to the ground. If they go again, they’d like to get more people involved, adding to The Pain Train team. “It’s kind of like people get into it, and it’s just something that they do every year. I kind of hope that’s the way that we take it, said Wilson. “We’ll probably make that decision after next weekend. Gould said with a laugh that lots of people want to go next year. They may just be waiting for

their friends’ reassurances before they jump all the way in. Tough Mudder also raises money for the Wounded Warrior Project, which supports soldiers who return from a tour of duty. To see exactly what The Pain Train team is going to be doing, check out toughmudder.com

Recently in the United States, a fast food chain called Chick-fil-A has caused quite the stir, and it has nothing to do with what goes on in the restaurant. Dan Cathy, Chick-fil-A CEO, recently came out with comments saying he supports traditional marriage. It has also been released that the restaurant chain’s charitable foundation, WinShape, donated almost $2 million to groups with anti-gay agendas. The company has said it doesn’t discriminate against people based on religion, race, gender or sexual orientation, but that hasn’t stopped people from protesting against Chick-fil-A. Universities across America have taken a stand against the restaurant, with it being reported that over 30 schools have protested or petitioned against Chick-fil-A. The students object to the anit-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) remarks from the CEO, and I don’t disagree with them. To me it is still amazing how much discrimination there is in this world. There are lots of problems in this world and to worry about someone’s sexual preference, race or religion is just a

Rhys Kelso Rhys’ Pieces waste of time. Although I don’t agree with the remarks of Cathy, the fact that so many people boycotted the restaurant made me think what would it take for me to stop going to my favourite chain restaurant? The fast food company at which I spend the most money is easily Subway. So if the CEO of that restaurant came out with some discriminatory remarks towards a person’s gender, race, religion or sexual preference would I stop eating there? The truth is I would continue to eat there. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and even though I don’t agree with it, I wouldn’t feel like I was supporting this opinion simply by being a customer of his store. However, if similar to the case of Chick-fil-A, I found out that one of my favourite companies supported groups with agendas against gays, a certain

religion or race I think I would stop supporting said company. I don’t think I could give my hard earned money to a company that would turn around and try and make this world a worse place by adding more discrimination to it. Supporting groups who have an agenda to hate someone seems ridiculous to me. And by supporting that group is only going to bring more hate into the world. I consider myself an open-minded person and as long as you’re causing no harm to other people, I don’t care about where you come from, who your with or who you pray to. Growing up in Winnipeg, I got to see people from all walks of life and I feel lucky to have grown up in a community like that. Everybody should be treated equally. There are obviously some holes in my argument here. All of the clothes I’m wearing now were probably made in China, and no doubt there was cheap or child labour involved, so I may be a little bit of a hypocrite. How about we all start with eliminating the discrimination in North America, and then we can work on helping the rest of the world.

Public opinion in animal treatment affects farmers Many people’s views to traditional ways are quickly changing. That is particularly true in the way people see human association with animals. We saw it most poignantly with the seal hunt. Once cameras took pictures and they were sent around the world people were appalled. The clubbing of seals is in no way a pretty sight. The question of whether it is inhumane is a different one entirely. The way of killing was not something the world wanted to see, and there was a backlash, but the hunt did have its reasons for existing, and the method of killing was efficient. That industry was shaken to basic extinction by the media coverage, and there have been reports since of a burgeoning seal population impacting fish stocks in the areas of the former seal harvests. Circulating recently on Facebook was a picture of whales being forced to shore and harvested on the Faroe Islands. The whale hunt was part of a long-held tradition, dating back to the 10th century. Again, the reaction was generally negative, although there was no indication the species of whale was endangered, and the harvest was for food. It was just a general attitude that such a harvest was a bad thing.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist We see that attitude creeping into the general viewpoint of average citizens more and more. There is growing opposition to many equine sports because there is a feeling they are abusive to horses. We have seen it with chuckwagon races and to a lesser extent with horse races. Rodeo comes under fire from some as well, and we have actually seen rodeo start to evolve with some groups moving away from the most controversial events such as calf roping and steer wrestling. Even though those events are most directly tied to what a cowboy might do in certain ranching situations, they are also the ones seen as most controversial. As a result, bull riding - the premier rodeo event - has forged its own trail through the popular PBR events. Rough stock rodeos, like the one held recently in Yorkton that featured only bareback, saddle bronc and bulls, are catching on.

While these things might not be seen as agriculture, they do relate back to the way people in general see animals and that impacts farmers. A prime example was the American horse slaughter, or loss of it, as short-sighted as that was. Those arguing for the end of the slaughter have not considered where old horses should end up. Understanding death by old age in a field of clover might be a Hollywood ending for a horse, but it isn’t reasonable in the real world. But in a world where people are doing things such as dressing their dogs in tuxedos and having them walk down the church aisle as part of wedding processions, the view of animals is clearly changing. That changing view is going to change the way we all interact with animals, whether as hunters, farmers or pet owners. The changes will be made by politicians who are well-removed from farming, listening to masses of voters, also well removed from what happens on a farm where their food is produced. That combination will mean rules and regulations that lack both common sense and understanding of raising livestock. And sadly there may be little farmers can do to prevent it either.

What do you think about new words being added to the dictionary?

He She He She Said

These aren’t just ordinary and necessary words. When the Internet was invented, we needed to call it something, and once we decided on Internet, it went in the dictionary, with a capital ‘I’ no less. Then there are other words that maybe we shouldn’t add to the dictionary, words like Brangelina. Sure, it’s a word that somebody came up with, but should we really be insulting the English language by incorporating it into the official scripture and thus legitimizing it? Recently words like F-bomb and sexting were inducted into the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Stalwarts of the English language were outraged. People like English teachers anyway. They would be complaining about proper English and why nobody cares to know it anymore, but there is no proper English. There is formal English, but who is to say that is better or more appropriate than slang, lingo or jargon? Language evolves, and that is something we all have to accept. Who really cares if the dictionary sports words that are annoying or silly pop culture references? I’m sure the Jersey Shore kids have coined a term or two and those words have been thrust into the viewers’ common vocabulary. Those words too, will soon be considered rules according to Dictionary Law. We aren’t the only ones who need to do it. English people keep coming up with silly words and the French look to the French Academy to create en Francais versions of those words. When bootylicious was coined, it was up to the French Academy to decide if the French needed their own version of that word. According to Google Translate, they determined the Anglicized version was sufficient. The changes in our language should be embraced because that’s what keeps it alive and fresh. If we didn’t add or adapt anything, we’d still have Old English. If we really didn’t adapt, we’d all be speaking whatever the first language was or no language at all. Like everything else, it’s adapt or die, and whatever words are added to our dictionary, it doesn’t make the English language any less legitimate or dumbed down. — Jordan Baker

I love English, partly because I’ve never understood math, so I needed a default favourite subject growing up. But I truly love reading and writing and the language in general. English is awesome. I’m OK with adding new words to the dictionary. A dictionary is supposed to record the language, and if enough people are saying “F-bomb, then I guess it’s part of English. There’s nothing to say that languages can’t change. Consider that they have changed to get to this point. Hence the fact that I’m not using “thine, thou, and “thee in every story I write. Language evolves as the world changes, so I’m OK with these new words. It’s a little bit sad, though, that one of the words being added is “F-bomb. I understand that it’s frequently used instead of swearing, but it’s such a stupid, moronic word, in my opinion. Of course, for people who feel like I do and aren’t pleased to see such a stupid word being added, consider that we don’t have to say “F-bomb just because it’s in the dictionary now. There are lots of words in the dictionary that I don’t use, including “concatenate, today’s word of the day on Dictionary.com. Concatenate means “to link together, as in a chain. I’m sure this could come up in conversation, if I were discussing fences, but I’ll probably just say “link instead. Similarly, I’ll just cuss instead of saying F-bomb, because I’m a bad-mouthed rebel like that. — Tonaya Marr

Babies good for one thing: Dressing them up Growing up, most of the houses in my area didn’t have fences in their backyards, so all us neighbourhood kids would get together and play in the summer. It was pretty awesome, because there were a lot of us, and also because I was one of the oldest and considered myself in charge. Anyway, one day I woke up and wandered over into the backyard of one of my neighbours to see if their kids wanted to play. Instead of the usual crowd, however, I was met by a toddler, and two unfamiliar strangers. Because my parents didn’t teach me anything about manners or not speaking to strangers, I

walked right up and introduced myself. My neighbours introduced the pair of newbies as “so-and-so and his girlfriend and the little girl was their daughter. At this, my younger-than-10 brain went crazy. I wish I could remember the look on their faces when I innocently asked “why do they have a kid? Aren’t you supposed to get married before you have kids? Yikes. Young Tonaya was seriously confused, and apparently very sheltered. This couple did not fit into my strict, black-and-white beliefs about how the world worked. Boy meets girl. They date. They get married. They have babies.

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me Plus, people with babies were old, like Mom and Dad. This couple seemed pretty young. I was not sure what to think. OK, flash forward to today. I’m 20 years old and I have a pretty good idea how things work. I get that children are born out of wedlock and that non-married couples live together (though not if my

dad can help it). I understand all this. It’s the age of young parents that I can’t get past. I think this comes from the fact that all of a sudden, the people having babies are my age. Which is awesome — I mean, if a baby is what you want and the timing is right, then good for you. I just ‌ I can’t understand even wanting a baby

right now. Not to say I’m irresponsible (I once accidentally killed a cactus), or selfish (I specialized in individual sports for a reason) or scared of childbirth (you’ve heard how babies exit the body, right?). I’m clearly parent material. But it just seems really, really early. Personally, I’d kind of like to finish my degree, work on my career, get married, way before I have kids (or adopt kids ‌ seriously, ouch). But like I said, I’m pumped for everyone else. While I’m super happy in my baby-less state (super, super happy), I do envy all you mothers out there for one reason: Halloween costumes. Lately Pinterest

has been blowing up with images of baby Halloween costumes, and I am just dying from all the cuteness. Cabbage Patch Doll baby? Taco baby? Lobster baby? Hilarious. Makes me consider borrowing/ renting a baby for an hour on Halloween, just for the laughs. But I’m pretty sure you can’t rent babies, and I doubt anyone would temporarily lend me that cuteness, so I’m stuck getting dressed up and going out with my friends. Darn. Tonaya Marr still checks under her bed for monsters when she goes to sleep at night. She’s realistic like that. Send her an e-mail at tonaya.marr@gmail.com or tweet her @TonayaMarr.

Enjoy style on a shoe string budget this summer “How about blueberry muffins and a cup of coffee tomorrow morning here at my house? This might be a good opportunity to get together for a ‘mom chat’ before summer winds down,

emailed my friend Carol. How could I refuse such a perfect excuse to put my “to-do list aside and just hang out in her charming home? Plus, I can always use an extra dose of “mom time.

Our conversation on that recent rainy morning was brightened by votive candlelight and a lively conversation about our latest crowd-pleasing ideas for entertaining at picnics, birthday parties and backyard barbecues. Here are some of our style-on-a-shoestring favorites: Table Decor Bring blooming flowerpots inside from your yard or deck for an instant, fresh centerpiece. Or, let your kids pick little bunches of herbs from your garden, such as parsley, oregano, dill and thyme. Tuck them in mini vases or small jars lined up in the middle of the table. Name them as the kids arrange them. Corn on the Grill Have more than a kernel of fun when you grill ears of freshly picked corn for a slightly smoky taste. We like to soak ours in a tub of water for a half-hour, husk and all,

before we put them on the barbecue. Protect your hands with potholders when you peel away the charred husks before serving the corn. Simple Dessert Several hours before a gathering, scoop your favorite flavors of ice cream into ball shapes and set in 8-inch-by-8-inch aluminum cake pans. Set them in your freezer until serving time. Use tongs to place them in a big serving bowl on a table set with a sundae bar of sauces and toppings such as mini chocolate chips, candy sprinkles, chopped peanuts and shredded coconut. Make a Travel Book a Guest Book It can be hard to say goodbye to guests you see only occasionally. Preserve the memory of their stay when you ask them to sign your guestbook. Make it easy to trigger thoughts by using a coffee-table style photo travel book of your

area as the guestbook. They can find a landmark or place of interest they toured and jot down a line or two on the page by a photo. It might read, “We’ll never forget our 30-mile bike ride and the fish tacos we ate at sunset by Lake Calhoun. Extra Idea: If you are hosting a party for a neighborhood family moving away, encourage guests to sign a photo travel book of your town as a personalized “send-off. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day is airing on public television nationwide. Spend more time fishing, less time working I had an interesting discussion recently with a young lady who is a year out of high school, and still trying to figure out what to do with her life. Just a year from my 20-year high school reunion, she got me in a weird place right now, as I’ve been having a lot of retrospective thoughts of late. Initially we talked a lot about career and education choices, but eventually the conversation turned to quality of life. This morning I interviewed a vice-president of

a substantial oil firm. It’s on days like this I really regret not getting my engineering degree. This man is the same age as I am, and from a small Saskatchewan town like I am. He went into engineering as I did and at the same time. He graduated from university the year after I would have. Now he’s probably worth a few million bucks, and is a vice-president and senior engineer for a firm worth $11 billion. That ship has long since sailed for me. There’s also a lot more to life than a high profile job. But there were

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile other little vignettes I passed onto this young lady. For instance, my sister is four-anda-half years younger than I am. She is also a nurse. Her becoming a nurse taught me something about life. It took the financial support of my mom, stepdad,

dad, her working summers, and me and my wife to get her through school. Mom had poured most of her resources into me, and since I had flunked engineering, I couldn’t really pay for my sister’s schooling, as had been the plan. But in her third year, I paid for half her tuition, because no one else could. It was either I write that cheque, or she doesn’t finish her degree. During her summers, she worked at fly-in fishing camps up north, where she totally fell in love with fishing. When she graduated, she could have gone to work

immediately as a graduate nurse for $19 an hour and made $10,000 over that last summer. There was such a shortage of nurses in Saskatchewan, my wife couldn’t get holidays. Indeed, for most of her career, she could not get her full holiday allotment. So the idea of my sister going up north to fish for the summer while getting paid $10 an hour instead of taking a nursing job right away infuriated both me and my wife. For my sister, it meant one more year of the best fishing of her life. To me, it was a cop-out. Years later, I realized she was right to go fishing, and I was wrong. Indeed, she just got back from another adventure, crossing one off her bucket list, as it were. She and her boyfriend drove to and from Inuvik, N.W.T. in less than two weeks, just for

the heck of it. I wish I could have done that. So this is what I told the young lady. Go do stuff. Do it now, before you are tied down like I am, before you have the job and the kids and mortgage. It’s a huge burden for us to drive four-and-a-half hours to Saskatoon with two young kids. I can’t fathom driving to Banff with them. We used to live eight hours from the Rockies. Why did we only go camping there once? I wish I had spent more time at the lake, more time camping, more time going places and seeing things and more time taking my kids and wife to all the above. Life’s too short to stay at home. It gave her a lot to think about. I know I still do. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian.zinchuk@ sasktel.net

Cellphone use blamed in fatal plane crash National OTTAWA - Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. is forecasting a moderate slowdown in new-home construction starts as well as sales of existing housing. The Ottawa-based federal agency isn’t calling for a major decline, but its latest forecast suggests next year will be somewhat softer than estimates CMHC issued in June while 2012 may be somewhat stronger than previously expected. CMHC has been saying for some time that it expects housing prices in most local markets will grow more slowly than they have been recently. It says housing starts and home sales have been strong in 2012 — particularly when it comes to multiple-dwelling units such as condos and apartments — but will soften moderately in coming months into 2013. *** VANCOUVER - The pilot in the fatal crash of a small plane may have set the stage for his own death by paying too much attention to his cellular phone and not enough to his flight. ATransportation Safety Board report released Monday said the crash near the airport in Fort St. John, B.C., last November could have been partly caused because the pilot wasn’t concentrating on his flying. The TSB report said

the pilot received three text messages and spent 28 minutes on his cell phone during what would have been a 65-minute flight from Peace River, Alta., to Fort St. John, B.C. The pilot received his last text message 11 minutes before the crash. “The aircraft had experienced several large altitude deviations while the pilot was using his cellphone, the report stated. “This distraction was prevalent throughout the flight and in conjunction with the night conditions encountered, may have contributed to the (crash). A graph in the report shows the altitude on the Cessna 185 E, operated by Treck Aerial Surveys, dipped from a low of 3,500 feet to a high of 4,600 feet three times during the flight. *** TORONTO - The man put in charge of eHealth Ontario following a spending scandal is returning a hefty bonus after coming under fire from opposition parties. The chairman of the agency’s board of directors said Monday he accepted Greg Reed’s “offer to decline his $81,250 performance bonus for 2011-12, which was part of his contract. Reed’s bonus was awarded with “my full support and approval in recognition of the outstanding

leadership he has provided to the agency over the course of the past year, chairman Ray Hession said in a statement. Reed, who turned down a bonus last year, still has the “full trust and confidence of the eHealth board, he added. The bonus was approved by the eHealth board on June 1 and the payment was made June 15, said eHealth spokesman Robert Mitchell. Both the Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats demanded that Health Minister Deb Matthews cancel Reed’s bonus — about 25 per cent of his $329,000 annual salary — after The Canadian Press reported it Sunday. The government wants all public sector workers, including doctors, nurses and teachers, to take a twoyear wage freeze to help eliminate a $15-billion deficit, and told managers and executives at its agencies to lead by example. Clearly they’re not getting the message, said NDP health critic France Gelinas. Reed bowed to political pressure and did the right thing, she said, but Matthews could have avoided the embarrassment if she’d used her powerful position and made it clear to all health-care executives that bonuses are unacceptable. International AMMAN, Jordan - The

Syrian prime minister who defected said Tuesday that Bashar Assad’s regime was near collapse and urged other leaders to tip the scales and join the rebel side. The U.N. said an estimated 2.5 million Syrians have been injured, displaced or face problems securing food or other necessities, a sharp rise from about 1 million three months ago. It was the first public statement by Riad Hijab since he left his post and fled to Jordan with his family last week. Hijab is the highestranking political figure to defect from Assad’s regime. “The regime is on the verge of collapse morally and economically in addition to cracks in the military, Hijab told a news conference in the Jordanian capital, Amman. Hijab is a Sunni Muslim from the eastern province of Deir el-Zour where rebels claimed to have shot down a regime MiG-23 warplane on Monday. Hijab, who was not part of Assad’s inner circle, said the trip to Jordan lasted three days during which he was protected by rebels of the Free Syrian Army. He said he felt “pain in his soul over the regime’s shelling and other attacks on rebel strongholds as the government stepped up its military offensive. Activists say more than 20,000 people been killed in the struggle since March 2011.

*** AMIENS, France Months of tension between police and young people in a troubled district of northern France exploded on Tuesday, with dozens of youths facing off against riot officers in a night of violence. Seventeen officers were injured, a pre-school and public gym were torched, and at least three passing drivers in Amiens were dragged from their cars. While the identity of the rioters and the immediate cause is unclear, the economic picture of the area in question is not. Unemployment skews higher in northern France and among the country’s youth. Less than two weeks ago, the French government declared Amiens among 15 impoverished zones to receive more money and security. The eruption of violence shows how little relations have changed between police and youths in France’s housing projects since nationwide riots in 2005 raged unchecked for nearly a month, leaving entire neighbourhoods in flames in the far-flung suburbs. At the height of the latest confrontation, 150 officers — both local and federal riot police — faced off against young men who fired buckshot and fireworks at them, skirmishing through

the neighbourhood in the city about 120 kilometres north of Paris. There were no arrests. *** MOSCOW - A magnitude 7.7 earthquake that hit waters off Russia’s Pacific island of Sakhalin on Tuesday inflicted no casualties or damage, Russian officials said. The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s branch on Sakhalin said the quake was centred in the Sea of Okhotsk about 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of Poronaysk, Russia, at a depth of more than 600 kilometres (373 miles). The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 1 p.m. local time Tuesday, had a magnitude of 7.7, while the Russian ministry put it at 6.3. “There have been no victims or damage, the ministry said in a statement, adding that the quake was felt as magnitude 2 to 3 shocks in towns and villages on Sakhalin. The ministry said that there was no danger of tsunami and that aftershocks were unlikely. In Japan, the Meteorological Agency also reported that there was no risk of a tsunami from the quake. Its readings showed the quake was mildly felt on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and in the northeastern section of Honshu, Japan’s main island.

Speedway win has extra meaning for Hagen After a tough day, Mike Hagen was just hoping for a good night when he pulled up to Estevan Motor Speedway for the Aug. 10 races. The Williston driver got it, as he led virtually start to finish in the modified feature to win his first race in Estevan this year. Earlier Friday, Hagen

and his son Travis, who also races at EMS, had served as pallbearers at the funeral for the wife of one of his close friends, who had a severe form of multiple sclerosis and committed suicide. “I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to win that one Friday night, he said. “It meant the world to

me, that win. It has been a rough year for Hagen, who has lost several other friends and family members, including an uncle. Aaron Turnbull, who has now placed in the top three in five straight races at EMS, finished second and he had to earn it. He was forced

to the pits for repairs during an early caution and was sent to the back of the field on the restart before winding his way up to second. Turnbull has 151 points on the season, leading Kent by eight. No one else is close. In the stock car feature, Minot’s Kelly Henderson earned his first Estevan vic-

tory of the year, outlasting Estevan’s Rocky Alexander for the win. Alexander currently leads the season standings with 158 points, six ahead of Henderson, who has posted a top-five finish in every race this year. In the hobby feature, it was Eric Sinness claiming his second win in Estevan this year. The Williston driver has finished first or second in each of the five races he’s entered this year at EMS. Blaine Durward currently leads the season standings with 216 points, which puts him 12 points ahead of Gary Goudy Sr. Meanwhile, Friday’s program featured a sport mod race. The track had considered adding the emer-

gent class this season but declined, opting to wait another year to see what transpired. The sport mods have been called a hybrid between a modified and a stock car, and cheaper to build than a regular mod. A total of 10 cars took part in the race, which was won by Wyatt Olson of Des Lacs, N.D. EMS president James Gustafson said there has been some interest from local drivers in entering the clas s if EMS were to adopt it for next year. “Here’s what they said: ‘You guys better make a decision on whether or not you’re going to run them here next year, because if you are, I’d be very interested in running a car in it.’

Fish story: Trout having whopper of a year This is about the one that didn’t get away. Los Angeles went fishing for a slugging outfielder and landed a kid by the name of Mike Trout, who is almost guaranteed to hook the 2012 American League rookie of the year award. The Angels and their fans, needless to say, are in love with Trout. They have fallen for him big – time hook, line and sinker. Trout started the 2012 season in the minor leagues. He was 20 years old when he was called up to the “bigs in late April. It was a slow start, 1-for-11, until a four-game series in early May against the Toronto Blue Jays – five hits in 16 at-bats, with 10 runs-batted-in in – got this amazing fish story started. It only got better. Trout, playing like a defensive veteran in centre field, has simply been the AL’s best hitter this year. His May

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist was great (.324 with five home runs), his June was sensational (.372, three dingers and an on-base percentage of .419) and his July had Cooperstown calling for his hat size (.392, 10 homers in 97 at-bats, a .455 on-base percentage and a Ruthian-like .819 slugging percentage). The 10 home runs tied an Angels record for one month. “My confidence has definitely increased because I’m getting more at-bats (and) playing every day and just getting more comfortable, Trout told MLB.com. “I’m feeling pretty good out

there right now. Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said Trout is “on his way to a remarkable career. He’s just getting started, and look what he’s doing. He’s just an unbelievable baseball player. Despite Trout’s remarkable rookie season and the Angels off-season signing of the generally acknowledged best player in baseball, Albert Pujols, the Angels are still struggling mightily to make the playoffs. They entered mid-August seven games behind West Divisionleading Texas, but are in the

Grilled Chicken and Pepper Salad A great summer salad combo -- grilled chicken breasts, red peppers and onions tossed in a tangy balsamic vinaigrette with peppery arugula leaves. Balsamic Vinaigrette 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 small garlic clove, crushed with garlic press 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper Vegetables and Chicken 2 red peppers 2 yellow peppers 1 large red onion, cut into 8 wedges 4 teaspoons olive oil 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken-breast halves 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 cup grape tomatoes 1 bunch (about 4 ounc-

es) arugula, tough stems removed 1. Prepare Balsamic Vinaigrette: In serving bowl, with wire whisk, blend all vinaigrette ingredients; set aside. 2. Prepare Vegetables and Chicken: Cut each pepper lengthwise in half; discard stems and seeds. With hand, flatten each pepper half. In bowl, toss peppers and onion wedges with 3 teaspoons oil. Rub chicken breasts with remaining 1 teaspoon oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper. 3. Grill chicken over medium heat. Cook 12 to 15 minutes or until juices run clear when thickest part of breast is pierced with tip of knife, turning over once. 4. While chicken cooks, place onion wedges and peppers, skin side down, on same grill. Cook onion about 15 minutes or until golden, turning occasionally; cook peppers 18 to 20 minutes or until skins are charred and blistered. 5. Remove onion

wedges from grill to plate. Transfer chicken to cutting board. Wrap peppers in foil and allow to steam at room temperature 10 minutes or until cool enough to handle. 6. While peppers are steaming, slice chicken breasts crosswise into 1/2-inch-wide strips. 7. Remove peppers from foil; discard skins. Thinly slice peppers. Add peppers, chicken, onion, tomatoes and arugula to bowl with dressing; toss gently to coat. thick of the wild-card race. With Trout surrounded by so much talent – among others, the lineup includes Pujols, Torii Hunter and second-year slugger Mike Trumbo and a pitching staff that starts with Jered Weaver, free-agent signee C.J. Riders hot start cools Will the real Saskatchewan Roughriders please stand up? The team from the province which bears the phone prefix “306 was the toast of the Canadian Football League after a torrid 3-0 start this summer under rookie head coach Corey Chamblin. They were the last of the unbeatens. Now, following the Roughriders’ 28-20 loss at Edmonton Friday night, they are the CFL club that has gone the longest without collecting a win. The boys in the green hats have lost three games in a row and stand at 3-3. Technically, they are in last-place in the CFL West. What happened? Well Friday night before the largest crowd in the CFL this season (just over 43,000), the Roughriders put on a shameless display of penalty-laden football and lost the turnover battle 3-0. We had JUST learned that 89 per cent of teams that win the turnover battle go on to win the game.

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider A former Roughrider and Eskimo who is in the Rider Plaza of Honour told me after the contest, “if it wasn’t for the penalties and turnovers, Saskatchewan would have won the game! True, but that’s like me saying, “if I wasn’t so ugly, I’d be hot. That’s football, and the Roughriders left the stadium smarting even though they put up close to 500 yards offence. “That’s not the Saskatchewan Roughriders, fumed Chamblin after the game. “There were a lot of penalties, turnovers and big plays against our defence. That was a very undisciplined showing by our team. However upon the Riders’ return home to the Regina International Air-

port (YQR) the next day, Chamblin had changed his tune considerably. “When you look at (Rider quarterback) Darian, there’s always room to improve but Darian’s playing fair to good at this point, the coach reasoned. “Darian is not a part of our problem right now. He’s going to throw interceptions - every QB in this league will. I’m OK with Darian’s play right now. Ah, textbook Coaching 101. When the Riders were 3-0, Chamblin was the first to say his team was a long way from perfect and they had a ton more to give. Now that they’ve hit the skids, he’s doing his best to lift the spirits and keep it positive. “The guys had the focus there, Chamblin

continued at the airport. “We just have to find a way to win. The biggest thing I’m proud of is we’ve been in all six games. It’s not like they’ve been blowouts. They’re a young team which is getting older. I’m pleased with this team right now. Durant followed right in line, which is worth noting. If the Roughriders are going to turn this thing around pronto, the quarterback and coach need to be on the same page. “We’re good, Durant answered when asked about the team’s psyche. “We realize what’s wrong. It’s not like, after the game we’re looking for answers or we’re getting blown out. The psyche’s good, spirits are high, it’s early and we all realize that. The trouble is it’s getting a little late to still be saying it’s early. The biggest test of the season comes Sunday in B.C. (5 p.m. kickoff) against the Grey Cup champion Lions. Will the Riders stand up for this one?

2,000 pieces up for auction following Games National TORONTO - The stars have come out for the NHL’s latest round of collective bargaining talks. Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Steven Stamkos and Jason Spezza are among the players in the Aug. 14 meeting in Toronto. The NHL Players’ Association is expected to present its first proposal to the league at the meeting. Union leader Donald Fehr has said the proposal will be an “alternative view rather than a counter-offer to the initial plan put forward by the NHL last month. That proposal called for lowering the players’ share in revenue and introducing new contract restrictions, including a five-year cap on deals. While players have attended every session of bargaining, today is the first time the game’s biggest stars have taken part. The current CBA expires Sept. 15 and the NHL has said there will be a lockout if a new agreement isn’t in place by then. *** MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens have locked down winger Max Pacioretty with a six-year contract extension.

The 23-year-old led Montreal last season with 65 points in 79 games and was second in goal-scoring with 33 goals, two fewer than Erik Cole. Reports said the deal was worth US$27-million, an average of $4.5 million per season. He will earn $1.65-million in the final year of his current contract next season. The new deal kicks in for the 2013-14 campaign and runs through 2018-19. “Thanks for the support everyone! So happy to be a part of this organization long - term.. #habs, Pacioretty wrote on Twitter. The move was announced Aug. 13 and comes two months after he won the Bill Masterton Trophy for perseverance, determination, and dedication to the game. International LONDON - The London Olympics may be over, but it’s not too late to take home a national flag from the athletes’ parade or a used javelin. Officials have put almost 2,000 Olympic relics up for auction, along with a replica of the “Isle of Wonder book that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling read from during the July 27

opening ceremony. The book’s price had risen to 1,066 pounds (US$1,670) Tuesday, after opening at 1 pound a few days ago. Among the stranger auction items also from the opening ceremony, directed by filmmaker Danny Boyle, are a farmer’s hand-sickle, a Mary Poppins hat with electric lights, a suffragette protest banner, and a maypole. Historic Olympic memorabilia is also offered, though they don’t come cheap: A 1948 London Olympic torch forged from aluminum is going for 14,000 pounds (US$21,970) on Tuesday — and it appears to be starting price. The sale of the items will go toward covering the cost of staging the games, as well as subsidizing additional costs incurred by selling Olympic torches to thousands of bearers at a discounted rate. Officials say the torches cost 500 pounds to manufacture, but the 8,000 bearers who took turns carrying the torch in a 70-day relay ahead of the games could buy them for 200 pounds as a memento. Also for sale are used equipment from the competitions, including a javelin

that’s selling at just over 2,000 pounds. *** MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - Mixed martial arts fighter and reality show host Jason (Mayhem) Miller was in jail on suspicion of burglary Monday night after deputies responding to reports of a break-in said they found him naked inside a Southern California church. Miller was being held on US$20,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, Orange County jail records showed. The pastor at Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo called authorities when he found evidence of a break-in Monday morning, including books and

CDs that were strewn about, white powder on the floors and missing boards from a previously broken window, sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said. Deputies arrived and said they found Miller naked on a couch. “When they asked him his name he responded, ‘Mayhem,’“ Amormino told the Orange County Register. They also found evidence that Miller had set off fire extinguishers inside the church, Amormino said. Miller was coherent and cooperated with authorities as he was arrested. Deputies did not know if Miller had hired a lawyer, and phone listings for Miller or a representative could not

Plumbing tool kit for an apartment

Q: I’m moving into my first apartment, and my dad said that I should have some basic tools around for plumbing problems to keep damage from happening while we’re waiting for the repairman. What are the best tools to have to take care of plumbing emergencies? -- Tamara in Tuscon, Ariz. A: The most indispensible tool in the apartment plumbing toolbox is, in my experience, the plunger. This inexpensive piece of equipment can stop toi-

lets from overflowing and unblock sinks and shower drains without doing damage to the pipes. When choosing a plunger, go for a basic “force cup model (this is the classic plunger with a simple bell), which works best on sinks and drains. If you want something a little more powerful for toilet clogs, pick up a second plunger with a center cone, which can increase the vacuum when plunging toilets. These don’t fit sink drains very well, though. It’s also good to keep a few more tools around for other plumbing-related work. While many apartment management companies will provide more than emergency repair -- they’ll also install the shower head

you want, or help with minor repairs like dripping faucets -- some landlords don’t provide more than emergency service. So add these to your plumbing toolkit: --An adjustable wrench and/or channel-locking pliers, which can fit varying widths of pipe. --Flat-head and Phillips-head screwdrivers. --An “offset screwdriver to help you reach screws at weird angles. --Spare washers, orings and screws. --Electrician’s or duct tape, and plastic or rubber sheeting that can be cut to size and wrapped around a leaky pipe for a temporary repair while waiting for the handyman. --Teflon pipe tape, used to seal pipe threads. If you’re interested or have permission to make more heavy-duty adjustments or repairs, adding a couple of sizes of pipe wrenches to the toolkit is helpful, as is purchasing a valve-seating tool, which cleans valve seats of sink faucets (a handy tool when fixing a leaky faucet). HOME TIP: Group your plumbing repair tools in a separate box from standard home repair tools so that you’ll be able to grab everything you need without sorting through all your tools. Sometimes heartburn can lead to cancer

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For many years, I had heartburn, and I lived with it by taking things like Tums. Finally, I consulted a doctor, who referred me to a gastroenterologist because he was alarmed at the length of time I’d had it. The gastroenterologist gave me a scope exam of my esophagus and stomach. It turns out I have GERD and something called Barrett’s esophagus, which turns into cancer. Naturally, I am nervous. I’ve never heard of heartburn-caused cancer. How often does that happen? -- A.S. ANSWER: Not often, but enough that plans have to be made to keep checking for such a change. Heartburn is officially called GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease. Stomach acid squirts upward (refluxes) into the swallowing tube, the esophagus. The esophagus isn’t built to deal with stomach acid the way the stomach is. The result is heartburn. Medicines for GERD are many. The ones most often chosen are protonpump inhibitors, medicines that all but turn off acid production. Their names are Prevacid (lansoprazole), Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), Nexium

(esomeprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole) and Aciphex (rabeprazole). Up to 12 percent of GERD patients, even with treatment, develop Barrett’s esophagus. The lining cells of the lower part of the esophagus change into ones that are more resistant to stomach acid. That change can evolve into another transformation that is precancerous. That’s called dysplasia. Dysplasia can then become cancer. The absolute risk for this is small, but it is real, and has to be carefully looked for. If the Barrett’s cells show signs of low-grade dysplasia, then a followup scope exam of the esophagus is done in six to 12 months and repeated

annually. If high-grade changes are found, the scope exam is repeated every six months. If no dysplasia changes are seen, follow-up exams are scheduled for every three years. The booklet on hiatal hernia and GERD gives a comprehensive treatment on this subject. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a senior citizen. For the past five years I

have received Botox injections and wonder where the Botox goes after it leaves the injection site after about six or seven months. Does it stay in the body forever? Does it go to an organ? Suddenly, I am worried about this. -- S.B. ANSWER: The body, as it does with all injected medicines, breaks down Botox, and the breakdown products are eliminated. It’s the way nature takes care of all foreign materi-

als that find their way into our bodies. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: All my friends have menstrual cycles that last 28 days. Mine don’t. They vary from 23 to 34 days. Is that normal? I feel fine. I am 23 and active. My periods are not painful. -- J.F. ANSWER: The average menstrual cycle is one of 28 days. That’s only an average. The cycle can vary

from 21 to 35 days and still be considered normal. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This week could offer more opportunities for ambitious Lambs eager to get ahead. But don’t rush into making decisions until you’ve checked for possible hidden problems. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some light begins to shine on professional and/or personal situations

that have long eluded explanation. Best advice: Don’t rush things. All will be made clear in time. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you might want to protest what seems to be an unfair situation, it’s best to keep your tongue and temper in check for now. The full story hasn’t yet come out.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Work prospects are back on track. But watch what you say. A thoughtless comment to the wrong person -- even if it’s said in jest -- could delay or even derail your progress. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A colleague might try to goad you into saying or doing the wrong thing. It’s best to ignore the troublemaker, even if he or she riles your royal self. Your supporters stand with you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to let your on-the-job

zealousness create resentment with co-workers who might feel you shut them out. Prove them wrong by including them in your project. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although it’s not quite what you hoped for, use your good business sense to make the most of what you’re being offered at this time. Things will improve down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A more positive picture of what lies ahead is beginning to take shape. But there are still too many gaps that need to be filled in before you make definitive plans. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Continue to keep a tight hold on the reins so that you don’t charge willy-nilly into a situation that might appear attractive on the surface but lack substance. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You still need to demand those answers to your questions. Remember, your wise counseling earns you respect, but it’s your search for truth that gives you wisdom. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’ll find that people are happy to help you deal with some difficult situations. And, of course, knowing you, you’ll be happy to return those favors anytime. Won’t you? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Give that special someone in your personal life a large, loving dollop of reassurance. That will go a long way toward restoring the well-being of your ailing relationship. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a delightful paradox. You like things neat and tidy. But you’re also a wonderful host who can throw a really great party. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

After graduating from Grade 12 at Macoun School, he moved to Estevan to work at several jobs to help further his education. He soon went on to Bible College and later university to become a Lutheran Pastor. Laverne served as a Lutheran pastor at Camrose and Forestburg, Alberta and Dawson Creek, B.C. After four years in Dawson Creek, he left the ministry and made his hobby of carpentry into a career, until his accident. Laverne always had a fond heart for Macoun and his family. He would drive for hours to get home for a reunion, wedding, important birthday or funeral. He kept himself up with what was going on with weekly phone calls and e-mails to family. Laverne is survived by his children: Sonya (Kevin) Dill, Meadville, Penn.; Randi Jo (Jake) Torgrimson, and Jonathan (Judy) Eagles of Dawson Creek, B.C.; grandchildren: Bree and Miles Torgrimson, Claire and Owen Dill; siblings: Rea (Marlene), Roger (Brenda), Mervin, Penny Tochor (Lyman Sargent), Scott and Kevin (Kelley). He was the fond Uncle to many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service was held at 10:00 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Dawson creek on August 4, 2012. Burial will take place at the Macoun Cemetery at a later date. Expressions of sympathy in Memory of Laverne may be made by donation to: “Make a Wish Foundation of B.C. and Yukon, #112 - 2025 West Broadway, Vancouver, B.C., V6J 1Z6; http://makeawishbc.ca On behalf of the family, THANK YOU to everyone for the visits, cards, flowers and especially your thoughts and prayers at this time of grief.
