centre of the village early on Friday and began the first ride at 1 p.m. The afternoon ride allowed everyone to ease into the weekend with a daylong ride following on Saturday. Sunday included another lengthy ride, departing at 10:30 a.m. and running until 4, with a supper that followed. About 80 riders showed up for the Friday ride and a few more arrived for the remainder of the weekend, which included camping and lots of food. Trail leader Richard Asbenlieder toured the trails ahead of the weekend to determine the best routes to use. The wet conditions the past few weeks had left the trails a little soggy so it made it difficult for some of the wagons to traverse the trails. “(Friday’s) going to be a little damp. Saturday will be good and Sunday, it’s fair on Sunday,” said Asbenlieder. “You try to go around the real bad spots. We lost half our parking spot here on account of the floods. This is the first year we’ve really had a problem. It’s just too wet.” The event is a fundraiser, and the organizations are hoping to put some funds toward a new community hall, which was demolished following flooding in 2011. The healthy turnout of riders allows Asbenlieder to be a little optimistic about the future. “It’s good for a Friday,” Asbenlieder said about the turnout on the first day of the weekend.

It may come as no surprise, but the science is hot off the presses, and it turns out people generally feel more empathy for dogs than their fellow twolegged neighbours. Well, these findings haven’t actually been peer-reviewed yet, but they’re so obvious I’d almost say it would be reasonable to skip that stage. In the newspaper world we know what sells papers: children and puppies. We care about these creatures because they’re innocent and vulnerable. They’re just exploring the world in which they understand very little, and that’s absolutely adorable. These tiny critters who can’t effectively communicate their problems are just so dependable on the rest of us, we just can’t prevent our hearts from melting if they encounter any sign of trouble. There are almost daily car bombings, but if we hear about the dog left in the car on a hot day we burst into outrage, all riled up and ready to string up the careless owner. For the study that set out to determine who we empathize with most, participants were given scenarios that involved the beating of a baby, an adult

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers in his 30s, a puppy and a six-year-old dog. Well, who would you honestly empathize with more? The guy in his 30s was probably asking for whatever trouble he got himself in. It’s the puppy and the baby who are pulling at my heartstrings. Those conducting the study found that age had the most to do with kicking us in the emotions. The participants cared more for the puppy than the adult dog, also caring more for the dog than the grown man. It isn’t just dogs who we care for. Does anybody remember Toy Story 3? When those animated toys were staring death in the face and ultimately accepting it because, hey, at least they were together, I don’t think anybody had the intestinal fortitude to hold back the waterworks. Those were just animated toy characters, but I’ll be damned if there

wasn’t a little something in my eye. But even if we think these little beings are helpless, it’s also true that they aren’t as stupid as we think they are. Dogs know they need us to survive, so they do whatever they can to stay in our good books. They’ve had a long time to figure out just how to make us care for them after thousands of years of being domesticated. For them, it’s all about survival, but we just think it’s cute. Well, it works. The puppies are winning because we just want nothing more than to keep them safe and protect them from all the horrible things in the world. Why worry about the wellbeing of our fellow man when there are puppies that need rescuing? It may just be a matter of our people problems being too complex and widespread. It’s easier to pull a puppy out of an abusive home than it is to get homeless people off the streets and into care beds or jobs, whichever is most appropriate. I don’t mean to suggest our pets don’t deserve protection, because they do. Let’s just not forget to empathize with the person who is bullied on a daily basis or can’t afford next month’s rent.

Heading toward brave new world of agriculture It was only about a month ago I wrote about a European idea to raise bugs to be crushed and used as a protein source for livestock. As many bugs are happy munching garbage, which we produce to excess daily, the idea is not just intriguing but would seem highly viable, albeit if the idea is a little disquieting too. Of course, if we turn back the clock a few decades to when livestock were all basically free-range, a husbandry style many consumers see as better than high density housing for stock, chickens ate bugs by the bushel, when not pecking through the manure left behind by the pigs and cattle looking for partly digested grain kernels. And the pigs themselves were avid rooters, and you just know bugs were part of what they dug up and munched. So with some second-thought I look at the idea with a bit less of the ewwww-factor. And besides, there is something else that popped up last week that has my attention in terms of a squeamish agriculture-related idea. Fellow Yorkton This Week scribe Thom Barker in his Critically Thinking column had what I suspect most are go-

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ing to see as a far more Orwellian idea. Well, actually, in this case it’s not so much an idea, as it is emerging technology. Barker wrote about how two food critics in London, England taste-tested the first laboratory-grown hamburger. The idea of growing a burger in a lab isn’t exactly new. In fact, Canadian author Margaret Atwood wrote about such a thing in her rather dark novel Oryx and Crake. The idea of chicken parts growing on a sort of mechanical tree was not particularly appetizing. Barker explained the hamburger in this case was “cultured from stem cells harvested from living cows.” Apparently, the two tasters suggested it tasted like meat, to which Barker said, “that doesn’t surprise me all that much, since it is meat. It is meat that was produced in an unconventional

way but meat nonetheless.” For me, this is an interesting development. I am all about feeding a growing population, and this may become a way to do it. We know there is pressure from some quarters already questioning dedicating acres to grow feed for livestock when those acres could be producing food directly consumable by humans. That said, we also know as world economies strengthen and create greater personal incomes, South Korea, China and India being the leading examples, they will look for more meat in their diets. The two things do run counter to one another. The assembly line burger might be an answer to the apparent conundrum, although factors such as cost to produce a burger are probably far from known, without even venturing into the ethical debate, which will no doubt come. Still, buggy protein for livestock, and assembly line grown meat, do seem to suggest we are headed to a very different future for agriculture than we could have even imagined a few years ago.

Four Canadians indicted in penny stock fraud case Provincial CARLYLE, Sask. - The chief of a Saskatchewan First Nation who has been sentenced to jail time for sexually assaulting a teenage girl has resigned and will be paid almost $50,000. The band council of the Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation says in a news release that it has accepted Terrance McArthur’s resignation. The council says it has agreed to pay McArthur for the remainder of his term plus severance — a total of $47,625. McArthur, who is 48, was sentenced to nine months behind bars last Wednesday after pleading guilty to inappropriately touching the then-16-year-old girl in April 2012. His lawyer has filed an appeal of the sentence. The chief submitted his resignation on July 30, but councillor Gaylene McArthur, who is not related, says the band held off announcing his resignation on the advice of legal counsel. No date for byelection has been set. Gaylene McArthur says it’s now time to move forward. “We have been weathering the storm so far and we hope this decision means the band can move on and we can continue with our programs and hopefully the people will heal.” National NEW YORK, N.Y. - Four Canadians and five Americans have been indicted in what U.S. officials call one of the largest international penny stock frauds in history. The U.S. Department of Justice says six suspects were arrested today in New York, Arizona, New Jersey, Florida and California, and another was arrested in Ontario. Two more are being sought. The department says the arrests are the result of a multi-year investigation involving the FBI and the RCMP. It says the suspects are accused in two separate but

connected schemes that netted more than $140 million and affected investors in dozens of countries. Two of the Canadian suspects — Gregory Ellis, 46, and Kolt Curry, 38 — have been arrested. Authorities say Sandy Winick, 55, is at large in Thailand and Gregory Curry, 63, has yet to be located. The American suspects are Gary Kershner, 72; Joseph Manfredonia, 45; Cort Poyner, 44; Songkram Roy Sahachaisere, 43; and William Seals, 51. *** OTTAWA - The federal Liberals say Prime Minister Stephen Harper exercised poor judgment when he vouched for Sen. Pamela Wallin’s expense claims earlier this year. Liberal MP Stephane Dion and Sen. James Cowan, the party’s leader in the Senate, say it’s just part of an ongoing pattern of dubious decisions on the part of the prime minister. Harper told the House of Commons in February he had personally looked at Wallin’s travel costs, calling them comparable to other parliamentarians travelling between Ottawa and Saskatchewan. On Tuesday, the Senate called in the RCMP after an audit flagged a host of inappropriate travel claims dating back to Wallin’s earliest days in the upper chamber. The auditors flagged $121,348 in inappropriate expenses and called for further review of nearly $21,000 in additional claims. Wallin has already repaid $38,000, and has since promised to reimburse any disallowed expenses — with interest — out of her own pocket. International PHILADELPHIA - A new robot at the University of Pennsylvania has a leg up on its predecessors now that researchers have outfitted it with jumping and climbing abilities — something that could make it particularly useful for such tricky propositions as military search missions or supply transport. The RHex robot project began about 15 years ago when researchers at several universities began asking what it would take for robots to traverse rugged terrain

as well as animals do. “You look at any machine that’s been built today, and almost any animal that you can imagine will outperform that machine,” said Penn engineering professor Daniel Koditschek, who’s been involved in the development of RHex (pronounced Rex) since the beginning. Legged robots, unlike wheeled ones, have the animal-like ability to overcome obstacles like stairs and ledges. But until the latest iteration of RHex, developed by Koditschek and fifth-year doctoral student Aaron Johnson, legged robots couldn’t negotiate gaps in terrain any better than robots with wheels. “Quite frankly, what the leg robots were doing was going over terrain that a good wheeled robot could probably handle,” said University of Michigan engineering professor Jessy Grizzle. “What RHex is doing now is something that you couldn’t imagine doing with wheels.” *** CAIRO - A cameraman for British broadcaster Sky News and a Dubai-based newspaper reporter were killed during violence in Egypt Wednesday, their employers said. Sky said Mick Deane, 61, was shot and wounded while covering the violent breakup of protest camps in the capital, Cairo. It said he was treated for his injuries but died soon after. The rest of the Sky crew was unhurt. The Gulf News, a state-backed newspaper in the United Arab Emirates, reported on its website that journalist Habiba Ahmed Abd Elaziz, 26, was shot dead near the Rabaah al-Adawiya mosque in Cairo as security forces moved in on a sit-in by supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. The newspaper said she had been on annual leave and was not on assignment at the protest for the XPRESS, a sister publication that she worked for. Sky said Deane had worked for the broadcaster for 15 years in the United States and the Middle East. He was married with two sons. Dozens of people have been killed across Egypt Wednesday in clashes between security forces and supporters of Morsi.

Humboldt’s Eaton earns silver in heptathlon

Provincial MOSCOW - The Eatons finished their working honeymoon in Russia on Tuesday, ever so close to making it a double-gold celebration at the world championships. Brianne Theisen Eaton of Humboldt, Sask., failed to sufficiently shake off Ganna Melnichenko in the final 800-metre race of the heptathlon and finished with a silver medal two days after her husband, Ashton Eaton, won gold in the decathlon. After two days of competition, Theisen Eaton no longer had the legs to create a decisive gap ahead of Melnichenko. And while the Ukrainian went celebrating wrapped in her national flag, Theisen Eaton wrapped herself in the warmest of embraces of her smiling husband Ashton Eaton, an American who won gold in the decathlon

earlier this week. Barely a month after marriage, they proved it was a near-perfect competitive match as she gained her first global medal. Melnychenko won her first major competition with 6,586 points, compared to 6,530 for Theisen Eaton. Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands took bronze. *** MINNEAPOLIS - Andrew Albers looked across the diamond at his opposing pitcher and saw everything he is not. It didn’t matter one bit on Monday night. The Canadian left-hander threw a two-hitter in his second career start and the Minnesota Twins backed him with a pair of home runs in a 3-0 victory over Danny Salazar and the Cleveland Indians. Salazar is the prized

prospect with the exploding fastball and knee-buckling changeup that has been blowing hitters away ever since the 23-year-old joined the organization.Albers is a soft-tossing, 27-year-old from North Battleford, Sask., who never met a radar gun that didn’t snicker at his 86-mph heat. The matchup sure was lopsided — for Albers. Albers (2-0) allowed two singles, struck out two and walked none. He’s thrown 17 1-3 straight scoreless innings in a start to his career that grows more improbable each time he takes the mound. “I’m not a prototypical prospect,” said Albers, who had Tommy John surgery in 2009, was released by the Padres and was playing independent ball in Quebec in 2010. “I’m not a guy that goes out there and lights up a radar gun or throws devastating sec-

National WINNIPEG - Kyle Walters has been named acting general manager of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, replacing Joe Mack, who was fired last week amid the team’s 1-5 start. Walters served as Mack’s assistant GM this season after spending three seasons on the coaching staff. The team said he has been responsible for CIS scouting and assisted football operations in managing the salary cap, negotiating contracts and recruiting players. “Kyle knows our football team inside and out and is the right man to serve as our acting general manager,” acting CEO Wade Miller said in a statement. “I have every confidence that he will play

a major role in helping us get a consistently competitive product back on the field.” Miller is acting CEO after last week’s shake-up included the departure of Garth Buchko, who had been in that post since January 2012. Walters previously coached the University of Guelph. Before that he won a Grey Cup as a player with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1999. International LONDON - For English football, it has long seemed unthinkable: a league season starting without the fingerjabbing, combative colossus of management on the touchlines. Alex Ferguson will be a bystander for the first time since 1986, watching from afar as Manchester United starts its pursuit of a recordextending 21st English title.

David Moyes now carries that responsibility. Widely admired during 11 years at Everton despite failing to collect a major honour, Moyes was hand-picked by Ferguson in the biggest decision — gamble, perhaps — taken by the owning Glazer family. “People are asking whether we can win the trophy again. Can we still be champions?” captain Nemanja Vidic acknowledged. Although he openly flirted with United in the months before Ferguson’s retirement was publicly disclosed, Jose Mourinho — one of the most talented but temperamental managers of his generation — wasn’t approached for the job. The charismatic Portuguese is back in the Premier League, though, after six years collecting trophies with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Obituaries Stella Drewniak

Formerly of Estevan and Frobisher, Sask. - passed away peacefully on August 3rd 2013. Predeceased by her parents, Bill and Anne Drewniak and two brothers Michael and Philip. Thankful for all the love and memories are her son Philip (Iris) Stiller, two grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. She will also be missed by her nieces, cousins and close friends. As per her wishes, a family gathering celebrating her life was held on Tuesday August 6th 2013 with cremation to follow. She wanted to be “free” and requested that her remains be scattered in the Pacific Ocean as her brother Michael’s remains were. Donations in her memory may be made to Wexford Creek Care Facility, 80 - 10th Street, Nanaimo, B.C., V9R 0A8 where she was most lovingly cared for in the past year.
