A teaser on the front page of last week’s issue incorrectly stated the Estevan Bruins’ captain passing away, when it was actually defenseman Nick Egan. We regret any confusion as a result of the error.

A mobile container of fun By Alex Coop

On Aug.14, the courtyard next to the Estevan Library was home to sidewalk chalk, hopscotch, an obstacle course, a triangle bouncer, potato sack races and, of course, bubbles. “It’s a way for children and parents to spend time

together and have fun,” said Madeline Valentine, community developer for Regional Kids First, a voluntary program that assists families with preschool children by strengthening bonds between the child and parent. For the past few weeks, Valentine has been touring

Saskatchewan in the Main Street Mobile Family Resources Van, which is filled with boxes of toys and activities that parents and their young ones can enjoy together. Many of the games had a large focus on hand-eye coordination, balance, and memory. With the help of a

grant from the Southeast Regional Intersectoral Committee last September, Regional Kids First was able to obtain a van, which proved to be the tip of the spear for the inaugural Main Street Mobile Family event. The van has stopped at several communities

within the Sun Country Health Region including Carlyle, Kipling, Weyburn, Oxbow, Radville, Ogema and Glenavon. Valentine said the event and her work with the Main Street Mobile Family

Resources Van function as the “legs on the ground,” for the Intersectoral Committee. Regional Kids First and Sun Country Health Region sponsored the event.

More to ice-water challenge than, well, ice water Bill Gates, Robert Downey Jr., George Bush, and even our very own Josh Lewis. They all have something in common today. They participated in something called the ALS Boiling Bucket challenge. Wait, no, that would be impressive, but actually, I think it’s called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Of course it’s called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and it’s the latest internet campaign that has taken the world by storm. You would have had to avoid all contact with people, televisions and computers during the past month to not know about this challenge. However, being the team player I am, I will fill you in. The ALS Ice Water Challenge stemmed from a late 2013 trend known as the Cold Water Challenge, where participants jumped into cold water or donated money for cancer research. A few months into 2014 the challenge transformed into the Ice Bucket Challenge, where participants record themselves dumping ice cold water over their heads, and nominate two - sometimes three - other people to do the same or donate money to ALS research. ALS, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/ and more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a non-contagious disease that affects approximately 3,000 Canadians. It causes the signals from the body’s muscles to the brain to deteriorate, causing one’s body to lose mobility. According to the ALS Society of Canada, it can also result in serious mood changes and loss of reasoning or problem-solving abilities. According to the ALS Association, they have received nearly $16 million in donations so far, which compared to last year, is a lot more than the $2 million they had raised by August. This Ice Bucket Challenge is a success then, correct? Well, ultimately, yes it is. How can you outright say it isn’t? If you look at the numbers, a lot of people are obviously donating money, not just dumping a bucket full of ice water over

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling their heads. However, if you take a closer look at these videos, you notice a slightly disturbing trend that is often unavoidable with these viral occurrences that spread like wildfire. The reason for the dumping of the ice water is completely and utterly lost in some of the videos. These scenarios usually go something like this: “Hi I’m so-and-so and I accept the challenge and I nominate so-and-so and so-and-so and yaay!” Wait, why are you participating in this weird trend? What is ALS? Where can I donate? These questions run through a person’s mind, perhaps someone, who hasn’t been swept up in the viral storm yet, and before you know it, they might say, “well, that was a waste of time,” and never look into it again. Now, as mentioned previously, a lot of money has been raised, so this bizarre challenge has succeeded. However, in the midst of all the nominations and ice water dumping, the overall message has been lost at times. It’s amazing that this challenge has caught traction so quickly, but if you are going to participate, make an effort to inform everyone what you’re doing and why. No need to assume that they already know what it’s all for and where they can donate. The more passion and information you put into these videos, the more you set the tone for the inevitable internet campaigns of the future. I think the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge teeters on that fine line where internet campaigns succeed or fail. It has largely been successful because it’s a relatively

simple thing to do, and most video challenges are less than a minute long. In today’s world, that’s nearly all our goldfish-like attention spans can take. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the average length of a video viewed on the internet in 2013 was about 2 1/2 minutes. Remember #Kony2012? Exactly. Anyway, as good as the production’s intentions were, it swung for the fences, but quickly lost traction as people forgot about the cause within a few months. Not a lot of people actually watched the 30-minute documentary outlining Invisible Children, Inc.’s initiative, which involved promoting the charity’s “Stop Kony” movement to make African militia leader and indicted war criminal Joseph Kony globally known in order to have him arrested by the end of 2012, when the campaign expired. Despite the fact that troops have been sent out to try and bring Kony in - who by the way is still on the loose - the campaign oversimplified the situation, and put millions of people in the situation where they simply clicked the “Like” button and forgot about it the next day. Also, rather than raising funds for military action, a more useful fundraising campaign that assisted former child soldiers would have been appropriate, because there was no way that making Kony a celebrity and raising money for military action was going to defuse the situation in Uganda, which is facing many more complicated problems that require the help of more than just a viral internet campaign. In the end, my call to action involves doing some research and having a clear reasoning behind your participation in these campaigns. They can do wonderful things, but can come off as a gimmicky device if done irresponsibly. Irresponsible gimick the label for shouldn’t be labelled with something that is ultimately trying to help people who need it.

Chemicals not just in our food Somewhere along the way the idea of chemicals has been made to be a scary word, especially when it comes to food. It’s not that consumers shouldn’t be concerned with what they consume, but somehow our view of food changed. It has become very trendy to promote chemical free, or no added hormones, as selling points for food. It suggests, without offering anything other than a provided perception, that the food they offer is better, or safer. And consumers take notice. We as a society have after all been conditioned to follow advertising. But somehow in the change we have created a dichotomy in how we view foods. We like the idea of chemical free, even organic, but still want the convenience of quick and ready food, from boil in the bag meals, to microwaveable bacon, to cream-filled cakes, which appear capable of surviving a nuclear winter. And then there is the rest of our world, where we seem oblivious to what we use in our lives.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist A dandelion is blasted with chemicals if it shows on our lawns. We spray the wasp nest in the eve, the flies around the garbage can in the back yard, and slather on bug spray to fend off mosquitoes. We may not ingest the spray, yet we certainly inhale and skin contact is all but inevitable. Then there are the morning rituals we all undertake in the bathroom. The shower includes body wash, shampoo, and rinse. We then lather on shaving cream, followed by aftershave, antiperspirant, and body spray. The ladies can add hair sprays, eyeliner, eye shadow, make-up and goodness knows

what else to the list. Very few of us even consider what the chemical make-up of such products is. Personally I don’t read the labels as a general rule, but I’m pretty sure there are many compounds in such products I would not be able to pronounce, and certainly have no understanding of what they do in terms of possible health risks. Now I am not suggesting the products are not safe. I maintain a level of trust in terms of government rules and regulations ensuring such products are well tested, and found safe for human use. The point is I trust the same system when it comes to bacon that can sit on a store shelf and taken home and tossed in the microwave to be served. If the system is flawed in terms of ensuring food safety, then the concern should go to a host of other products we inhale, and come into skin contact with on a day-to-day basis in our worlds. Diligence is never a terrible idea, but we should still recognize our food supply is as safe as it has ever been, starting with the efforts of our farmers.

HEELS!

The unemployment numbers released by Statistics Canada on Aug. 8, which showed a recordlow unemployment rate in Saskatchewan, turned out to be incorrect according to

a release from the agency. The good news however, is that the revised numbers show an even lower unemployment rate of 3.2 per cent, rather than the 3.3 per cent previously reported. This number is the lowest unemployment rate ever recorded in Saskatchewan.

@2xsiv

Job growth in the provinces was largely due to construction, which provided people with over 7,900 jobs, rather than 6,100 as the initial report from StatsCan showed. The agency had previously stated that 200 jobs were created across the country. The corrected figure was well above that, at 42,000 jobs. Nationally the number of full-time job losses is now 18,000 instead of the 60,000 figure reported last week, while parttime gains are largely unchanged and still hover around 60,000. StatsCan blamed the mistake on an overhaul of its Labour Force Survey, and the agency said one of the survey programs wasn’t updated during the redesign phase due to human error.

On behalf of the people of Saskatchewan, we are pleased to welcome His Royal Highness back to our great province, Wall said. I encourage all citizens to take advantage of this unique opportunity to engage with a member of Canada’s Royal Family. The Earl is scheduled to stop in Moose Jaw, Regina,

Saskatoon and Swift Current. Further details will be announced at a later date. The Earl first toured the province in 1978 with his parents, Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh, followed by individual visits in 1994, 2003 and 2006. It is The Earl’s 37th visit to Canada.

Ikan Suji began loading Aug. 5, taking on 35,200 tonnes of No. 2 Canada Western red spring wheat that came from Pioneer elevators in Manitoba and northeastern Saskatchewan. The shipment was destined for Mexico. “Churchill is an important port for Richardson and we are pleased to have another large shipping program in place for 2014,” said Curt Vossen, president and

CEO of Richardson International. “Last year, we extended the shipping season by several weeks loading the last vessel on Nov. 12, and we expect to have another strong season this year.” While Richardson has shipped grains and oilseeds such as peas and canola through Churchill for decades, the company’s use of the port has increased significantly since the open market for wheat and barley was created in August of 2012. “The Port of Churchill has become a major shipping point for us as it provides

another viable opportunity to move western Canadian grains and oilseeds to customers around the world,” said Vossen. “With record crops and the capacity challenges we are facing each year, we are making use of all available rail and port terminal capacity to move farmers’ grain as quickly as possible.” The company ships mainly wheat, barley, canola and peas through Churchill to customers in countries around the world, specifically in Latin and South America as well as Europe. The company has a history

with the Port of Churchill since it shipped the first cargo of wheat from Churchill on Oct. 11, 1929, when the Engava set course for Liverpool, England with a shipment of Manitoba-raised wheat. Richardson is headquartered in Winnipeg and is a vertically-integrated processor and manufacturer of oats and canola-based products as well as being recognized as a leader in agriculture business and trade as well as food processing. Richardson has more than 2,500 employees across Canada and the United States.

Bumper crop could bump nursing home potential By Norm Park for Agri News

If all goes well on the local agricultural scene over the next week or two, the drive for a new regional nursing home in southeast Saskatchewan could be $60,000 to $100,000 closer to reaching the $8 million target. About 285 acres of promising canola crop has been dedicated to the Hearthstone Committee. This is the group charged with the duty of collecting that $8 million, which is the regional share of a $40 to $42 million nursing home that will be built in Estevan to replace the aging Estevan Regional Nursing Home. The Hearthstone Harvest concept grew from an idea hatched around a local farm office this past spring said Mike Marr and Ray Frehlick, two of the key drivers of the project. Frehlick Farms has donated the farmland and Marr, sales manager for Red Head Equipment in Estevan, convinced his corporate peers to donate some equipment and time for the seeding, swathing and harvesting. To gain additional advantage, Richardson Pioneer’s manager for the area, Randy Riege has pledged their support by agreeing to buy the crop at the going price right off

the combine. A little more outreach by the producer team brought farm input specialists Bayer CropScience and Monsanto on board with a willingness to provide their weed and insect control chemicals gratis as well, thus increasing the potential profit margin significantly. T h a t ’s w h e r e t h e $60,000 to $100,000 estimate came from, said Frehlick, a well known oilpatch supplier and farmer. His company also donated some of the labour and spraying equipment. “It’s a good way to raise awareness. When we’re done, we expect to hand a nice little cheque over to these people,” Frehlick said, referring to committee members Vern Buck, Rick Seipp and Tania Andrist who were standing nearby, waist deep in the rapidly maturing crop in early August. “We need a new nursing home. No doubt about that, and this is one way we can get the job done,” said Marr, who suggested that if the weather co-operated, they could be combining by the end of this month. “So far it looks pretty good. We just need more sunshine and a little farming luck.” “We want the public to take a little more interest in the nursing home need. Who knows when we’ll need those services,” said

Mike Marr (left) and Ray Frehlick representing the donor group check the Hearthstone Harvest canola crop with Hearthstone representatives Rick Seipp and Vern Buck (right). Frehlick. Buck said the Hearthstone committee had reached and just barely surpassed the $7.5 million mark in the fundraising campaign so they were definitely in the home stretch in the race to raise the $8 million for the 70 to 80 unit nursing home. It is expected the new home will be built as an additional wing to St. Joseph’s Hospital once it gains governmental approval, which can only be obtained after the local committee has raised the obligatory 20 per cent of the funds deemed necessary to kick off a construction project. -30-

SOUTHEAST AGRI NEWS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2014

Fingers crossed for southeast Sask. crops By Norm Park for Agri News

Some swathing has been observed in southeast Saskatchewan as local producers begin their race against time and weather. “North of Weyburn, I saw quite a bit of activity,” said Sherri Roberts, crop specialist for the Ministry of Agriculture from her Weyburn office. “In fact, a few fields were already cleaned off by mid-August.” Roberts said pea fields have been sprayed and are now ready to take off and one farmer, she said, had informed her he had already

harvested his peas as of Aug. 18. “Things look pretty promising on a lot of these fields, those that stayed dry. But there is a lot of variance out there,” she said, referring to the fact there were quite a few fields that had to be seeded later than normal. They still require another week to get to a mature status. “The canola crops are varied. Some are still in bloom,” she said, referring to the Aug. 18 observance. “If the weather holds and hail and frost stay away, there should be some great crops out there,” Roberts added.

Moisture, like the crops themselves, varied significantly around the southeast region. Some spots were missed by the recent rains while other harvest operations are being hampered by damp conditions. “We even had a few grasshopper issues this year, but only in spots, not widespread. A little bit of midge showed up, too. As far as the canola crops were concerned, we didn’t see any major problems with insects or diseases. Ergot had a good start and was found in the grasses alongside the fields, so a lot of producers decided to cut

FARM BUILDINGS

that down quickly.” Roberts added that sunflowers are in bloom in the few fields where that crop was planted earlier this year and some hemp was also spotted. Flax crops are looking good with just a few fields being challenged with some volunteer canola. Some of those crops had just been sprayed, so flax is advancing nicely. “We see a lot of combines on the roads now. I took a trip down to Montana this past week, and I spotted a lot of combines on both sides of the border. It’s dryer down there, so everyone there is busy now,”

Roberts said. The crop specialist said that, believe it or not, canola crops in this sector of the province might be as good or even better than they were last year, and that was a spectacular one for this particular crop, but again, it was a matter of timing with fingers being crossed for the later-seeded fields. The same held true for soybeans, she suggested. “Everyone is pretty optimistic about corn yields, too, but again, Mother Nature can still deliver hail and harm and not a lot of it is in the bins yet, so they just have to work hard on the fields that are ready

and wait on the ones that aren’t.” Roberts estimated that by next weekend, all producers will be well into full-bore harvesting, even those with later-seeded products. “Most cereals are going gold now,” she noted. Pasture conditions remain good. Some appeared dry especially near the U.S./ Canada border, she said, but again, there was a wide variable. Others looked fantastic. “Combines were rolling as early as August 14. We’ll be seeing a whole lot more of them over the next couple of weeks,” she said.

Canola growers join coalition mer. The legislation will be reviewed by the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food this fall. Partners in Innovation has been asking for updated plant breeder’s rights legislation to bring Canada in line with UPOV 91, an international convention adopted by Canada’s competitors. Canada is one of only two developed country members which have not ratified the Union for the Protection of New Plant Varieties (UPOV 91), currently putting Canadian plant breeders and farmers at a competitive disadvantage. Adoption of plant breeders’ right amendments will encourage both public and private sector investment in new crop varieties. “The changes proposed in Bill C-18 should enhance crop innovations and generate investment in Canadian agriculture,” said Halstead. With 90 per cent of canola grown in Canada exported, canola growers need a competitive regulatory framework at home and the right set of crop input tools to compete internationally.

Partners in Innovation, a coalition of farmer, industry and value chain organizations, welcomed the Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) to its membership this summer. CCGA joining Partners in Innovation brings the active coalition membership to 19. “New pests, changing climates, evolving consumer demands and shifting market dynamics require continuous investment in farmgate innovation to keep canola farmers competitive in the global oilseed market,” said Brett Halstead, president of CCGA. “Enhancing our research environment to better attract investment in new plant varieties is essential to keep our farms sustainable agronomically, environmentally and economically today and into the future.” The changes to Canada’s Plant Breeders’ Rights legislation as proposed in Bill C-18; the Agricultural Growth Act, passed second reading in the House of Commons prior to Parliament adjourning for sum-

Blooming Good Crop

Late July seemed to be the time for most of southeast Saskatchewan’s canola crops to enter full bloom this year, undisturbed by the ongoing oilpatch activity going on within their yellow patches of progess.

Polycore Thermoplastic Lined Tubing

“Give Us Your Worst Well!”

Polycore Tubular Linings provides thermoplastic liners that have been proven in down-hole applications in over 50,000 wells during the past 15 years. Operators experience drastic reductions in operating cost by eliminating rod on-tubing wear and corrosion failures. Savings can also be found with: less work-overs, prolonged tubing life, minimized lost production, reduced energy required for lifting in pumped wells, and reduced need for corrosion inhibitors.

Thermoplastic liners are extremely abrasion resistant and chemically inert, eliminating concerns associated with wireline damage, coil tubing mechanical damage, acid treatments, and chemical treatments. Polycore’s patented products have been particularly effective in eliminating rod on tubing wear in beam pumped wells, progressive cavity pumped wells, and any well associated with deviations. Today’s horizontal wells are a perfect application for Polycore’s thermoplastic liners cutting rod load friction on downhole tubing in half. Thermoplastic liners are also effective with other artificial lift methods such as plunger lift wells, submersible pumped wells, and gas lift wells. Use of this technology eliminates the need for tubing/rod rotators as well as rod guides and/or special rod boxes.

5

6

Thermoplastic liners have also been proven effective in reducing corrosion failures in injection wells, disposal wells, and flow lines.

12

13

This mechanically bonded liner solution allows you to recognize additional savings by promoting the use of used inspected tubing including: yellow band, blue band, and green band. The Polycore liner installation process also allows reusing tubing already internally coated with plastic or epoxy, without incurring the cost of having the old internal coating removed. Thermoplastic liners can also be installed in used tubing which may previously have been scrapped due to pin thread mechanical damage or corrosion damage caused by chipped coatings. With sufficient upset remaining, the threads can be repaired and a thermoplastic liner installed. Polycore’s unique and innovative end finishing process, in combination with a coupling internally coated in the J-area, ensures zero corrosion through the entire string of tubing while maximizing the ease of running tubing in the field. No corrosion barrier donuts/inserts, special torque make-up requirements, or service technicians are required. Polycore lined tubing is run using a torque to optimum API specifications.
