Cheers to the ladies who volunteered to plant flowers at Estevan Regional Nursing Home this spring. After heavy rains, wind and hail, they are now blooming gorgeously. You are especially appreciated! Cheers to the Good Samaritan who rescued my blue bin out of the cardboard dumpster when I accidentally dropped it in! Cheers to everyone involved in Beach Bash. It was a terrific event that brought many from the community together.

Cheers to a lovely lady at the No Frills checkout counter who found and gave me back my envelope, with the money still in it. Jeers to me for putting that envelope in my pocket and not my purse where it would have been safer. Cheers to the Farmer’s Market and the service they provide the community.

Jeers to mosquitos.

Jeers to those people who continue to drive drunk. Risking your life is one thing, risking the life of others is an entirely different story. Jeers to people who think their time is so important that they can’t take 15 seconds to put their shopping cart away. Jeers to people who drive like idiots through construction areas and then can’t figure out why their vehicle doesn’t work right.

My name is Sophie do you remember me? I am a female spayed Shih Tzu. I went to a couple but they both worked long days and I was just too lonely. I am used to having canine friends and I was all by myself, so I am back. I love children, cats and other dogs. I am a real little sweetheart. I’ve had a few bad breaks but I still have so much love to give. I would prefer a stay at home mom or a retired couple so someone would be home with me.

I’ll never get some people Jordan Baker, the man who usually occupies this space in the Southeast Trader Express is on holidays this week so you’re stuck with me. Last we heard Jordan was roaming the shores of Lake Huron, most likely with a bottle of wine. I don’t know that for sure but it’s a safe bet. Unlike Jordan, or even our other consistent columnist Norm Park, I find it tough to come up with a column each week. Time is part of the reason but there are many times I just can’t think of anything to say. So I have a great admiration for those who can come up with something each day or week depending on the paper. One thing I always seem to come back to when searching for ideas is people. Not any particular people, just people in general. Really, what is more interesting than the people around us? That is why I like reality TV so much. Not those trashy shows like Honey Boo Boo with the mother who wears that crazy mask or the Real Housewives of Cleveland or wherever the hell they are. I’m more a fan of the ones that show real people living real lives. I know it’s not nearly as popular anymore but I’ve always liked Survivor. Yes, it’s true the circumstances on the

Chad Saxon These Things I Think show couldn’t be more contrived but I do like the aspect of taking people out of their comfort zone and forcing them to interact with others under less than ideal conditions. I also kind of like the idea of having an island to disappear to every now and then because as fascinated as I might be with people, there are times when I can’t stand them and would love nothing more than to escape. I had one of those moments a few days ago at one of our local grocery stores. I grabbed my food and was waiting in line to pay when I got trapped between a couple of people clearly not happy with the world. I don’t claim to always be anything close to the most positive person in the world but I can at least say I try and make an honest effort to be better at it. I also make a very sincere effort to stay away from people like these two from the grocery store. I find being around those types sucks the energy from your

bones. I also find that it’s so easy to get sucked into that vortex and before you know your entire view of the world begins to skew along their lines and not yours. I did my level best to find a happy place and block out this conversation but wound up failing miserably when the topic turned to how upset they were with all of the construction in the city. Like I said, it’s still a work in progress. I made the terrible mistake of asking how this individual would fix the roads without construction. Huge mistake! By the time I left the grocery store I was pretty sure the world was a horrible place and just wanted to curl up into the fetal position. (OK, that might be an exaggeration). Still, it reminded me how quickly that type of energy spreads. So, if there’s any sort of moral or message to this rambling, perhaps it’s that negative words seem to carry a much greater weight than positive ones, which is something that many of us — myself included — need to be reminded of. My email address is editor@estevanmercury.ca in case you need to send something. I have been informed the mother on Honey Boo Boo isn’t wearing a mask. That thought will likely prevent me from sleeping for a week.

Connections to the past

In the past I have lamented how we have lost much of our connection to our past. It’s an issue farmers know all too well. As a growing percentage of our population are now two or more generations removed from the farm the understanding of what goes into producing food is lost. It becomes ever easier for the public to latch on to idyllic ideas of what it should be and those visions of farming may have little to do with the reality of driving a tractor, or grazing cattle. Yet as voters, the public holds some sway with policy makers in government and the changes they may successfully lobby for can impact how producers go about their business. But it goes farther than that. Last week I stopped by the Yorkton branch of the Western Development Museum for a couple of afternoons to capture pictures of the annual summer youth program the branch hosts. Over three days the youth were given at least a little taste of what pioneers faced. They had chances to make rope by winding twine, churning cream to get butter, and making their own candles. It’s not a program that is going to make the youth suddenly pioneer revivalists, but they are at least given a glimpse at a time when butter did not come out of a tub from the store, or that candles come in scents of lavender and lilac from a dollar store.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist That said, the time spent watching the youth doing their projects did get me to reflecting on the lost art of self-sufficiency. Again I have talked about this before, but the family garden is increasingly a thing of the past. It’s still amazing to me that the Assiniboine Food Security Alliance actually has to mentor some wanting to partake in their community garden. Planting seeds and watching grandma and mom hoeing weeds are among the earliest of memories in my world. But if the basic skill of growing a garden is being lost, what of the skills of preparing food to winter storage? How many women, or men in a world of gender equality, have made dill pickles? I’m not sure there is anything, which reminds more of fall than the smell of pickles being made. Not a lot tasted better than a jar of those pickles brought up from the cellar in January and added to the supper fare either. It is, of course, more than making pickles. Few go out in search of wild fruit these days to bring back and make jars of jams and jellies

for the larder. Fewer people can fruit, or even fill a deep freeze with their own frozen veggies. In a world where food security seems to often top the list of consumer concerns one might expect the public to be turning back to in-home food preservation, but in reality as a society, we have willingly turned our food needs over to grocery stores. It’s, of course, not just food preservation that is being lost. In our consumer-driven world darning a pair of socks has given way to tossing socks with a hole in them to the landfill and a trip to the store to buy new ones. My grandma spent hour after hour knitting and crocheting and creating things for the home. They are not skills most look to learn or utilize today. It says something about how reliable the food chain is. We always have food in grocery stores. It says something about our incomes where new socks are an option over fixing old ones. But if fuel ever becomes truly in short supply so that cooler trucks loaded with California producers boost food prices through the roof, what then when the old skills are lost? It may not become an issue, but it is at least a question to ask and a possible future to ponder.

Harper touring northern Canada Stephen Harper took up arms — albeit antique arms — on the Arctic tundra late Tuesday in a round of target practice meant as a show of solidarity with Canadian Rangers. Both the prime minister and newly appointed Defence Minister Rob Nicholson went shooting with the First World War vintage .303 Lee Enfield rifles. They are the standard issue weapon for the aboriginal reservists — or part-time soldiers — who patrol the vast, desolate tundra. The practice was part of Harper’s annual tour and the Canadian Press noted that he clearly relished the bonding exercise, firing from several different positions, including laying down. Shots from the rifle demonstration reverberated for kilometres over the empty limestone and sand landscape. But it was as much a political statement as a chance to share the rigours of Northern life for a prime minister who’s mantra has been to assert and defend Canada’s claim to the Arctic. “Canada has a choice when it comes to defending our sovereignty over the Arctic. We either use it or lose it,” Harper said in July 2007 speech, which helped lay the foundation for the Conservative government’s Northern Strategy. The tough rhetoric and thundering military photo-ops have gradually faded with each successive summer tour of the Arctic, which Harper undertaken religiously since becoming prime minister. The latest trip has led him to this wide-open, chilly nook of Nunavut’s King William Island, infamous as the potential resting place of the lost Franklin Expedition of the 1800s. With four cabinet members in tow, Harper and his outdoors-loving wife set up camp on remote stretch of beach about 20 kilometres from Gjoa Haven, birth place of Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq. A group of enthusiastic Rangers helped him build an inukshuk, the stone landmark synonymous with the Inuit. They also showed him how to erect a traditional tundra shelter made of animal hide. As the sun set close to midnight, Harper inspected drying Arctic char hung on string between wooden posts, and watched a demonstration of the lighting of qulliq, an Inuit oil lamp that is set ablaze using the spark of two flint rocks. •••••• A Toronto police officer facing a rare murder charge in the shooting death of a young man on a streetcar is free on $510,000 bail after spending just hours in custody. Const. James Forcillo, 30, surrendered himself to authorities Tuesday morning on an arrest warrant that was

issued the day before in the death of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim. Yatim was shot multiple times and Tasered on an empty streetcar last month. It was captured on surveillance and cellphone video on which nine shots can be heard following shouts for him to drop a knife. Forcillo showed no discernable reaction when he appeared in court in the morning on a procedural first appearance and in the afternoon when he and his lawyers attended the bail hearing. He was brought to the courthouse around 8:30 a.m. and walked free about seven hours later. Superior Court Justice Gary Trotter’s reasons for setting Forcillo free on bail are under a publication ban. But his lawyer Peter Brauti said outside court that Forcillo, who has an “excellent” policing background, is someone who should be released. The speed with which he got out is unusual, Brauti acknowledged. “It’s rare, if you want to talk about murder cases in general, but when you look at the circumstances of this case, this is a case where Mr. Forcillo didn’t ask to be at the foot of that streetcar,” Brauti said. “He was on duty and he had a legal obligation to be there. We’ll have a trial about whether the decisions were right or wrong.” •••••• Statistics Canada says Canadians took more trips to the United States in June but fewer people travelled to Canada. The federal agency says Canadians took 4.8 million trips to the United States on a seasonally adjusted basis in June — up 2.6 per cent from May and up 2.4 per cent from the same month last year. Canadians took 2.7 million same-day car trips to the States in June, up 2.7 per cent from the month before and about two per cent more than in June 2012. But Canadians took fewer trips to overseas countries in June, down 0.4 per cent from May to 792,000 trips. It’s also down from 805,000 trips in June 2012. Going the other way, the number of trips to Canada from the United States fell 0.5 per cent from May to 1.7 million trips in June. A year earlier, there had been 1.75 million trips to Canada from the United States. However, overnight trips by airplane to Canada from the U.S. were up 0.3 per cent from May to 315,000 trips — the fifth month in a row of gains and the highest monthly figure since September 2007. Travel from overseas countries to Canada was down 0.5 per cent from May, with more people coming from Hong Kong and fewer coming from Switzerland.

Well over 1,000 people attended the second annual Woodlawn Regional Park (Boundary Dam) Beach Bash on Aug. 17. The warm weather was perfect for beach and water activities throughout the day. The events such as beach volleyball, treasure hunts and water craft rides were augmented by a busy concession stand, beer garden and bands that entertained throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Pioneer Echoes

Midale was the scene for the 47th annual edition of their ever-popular Pioneer Echoes celebration on Aug. 17 and 18 this year. The celebration included tours of the town’s Pioneer Village and the display of several pieces of old farm equipment, much of it still in working order. That meant organizers were able to conduct old time threshing demonstrations along with an afternoon parade of old farm equipment including tractors, combines, excavators, trucks and antique autos.

Bagg escapes with knee sprain SaskatchewanRoughriders receiver Rob Bagg has been diagnosed with a knee strain after the club’s win Saturday over the Montreal Alouettes. The popular veteran injured his knee on a seemingly harmless play and was forced to leave the game. TV cameras captured Bagg crying as he left the field which led many to speculate that he had again torn ligaments in his knee. Bagg has already endured two major surgeries — one on each knee. It’s expected he will miss Saturday’s game against Edmonton. The Riders currently have him listed as day to day. • • • • • • Canadian welterweight contender Rory (Ares) Mac-

Donald will fight hard-nosed veteran (Ruthless) Robbie Lawler at UFC 167 on Nov. 16 in Las Vegas. In the previously announced main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre of Montreal meets No. 1 contender Johny (Bigg Rigg) Hendricks. The UFC bills the Lawler-MacDonald matchup as “old school meets the new breed.” The 24-year-old MacDonald is ranked third among 170-pound contenders while the 31-year-old Lawler is No. 9. MacDonald (15-1) is coming off a decision over Jake (The Juggernaut) Ellenberger that stretched his winning streak to five.

Alpine rescue service in Val di Fassa told The Associated Press that Richard had already done three successful jumps from the same peak the previous day but apparently miscalculated on the fatal jump by three meters. The 47-year-old lived in Utah, where he helped run Moab B.A.S.E. Adventures, which specializes in the extreme sport of jumping with a parachute. A local city hall official says the body is being held in Canazei pending cremation and repatriation to the United States.

This refresher course is designed to ensure that wellsite supervisors and prime contractors maintain a high level of awareness of their responsibilities and roles with respect to safety management and regulatory compliance at the wellsite. Key legislated rules and industry practices for Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan are discussed and summarized in an index with references so that the wellsite supervisor/prime contractor can research further details as needed. The course covers responsibilities for health and safety legislation, health and safety program elements, hazard identification, risk assessment and control, inspections, incident investigation, emergency response and leadership skills, with particular emphasis on regulatory changes and key industry issues from the preceding three years. Prerequisites: Safety Management & Regulatory Awareness for Wellsite Supervision (current three-day course), with a grade of 85% or higher.

Our Past

August 23, 1967

Much like today, roadwork was a major focal point of the City of Estevan in the summer of 1967. One of the major projects was the paving of Albert Street which according to reports at the time, moved quickly thanks to co-operative weather throughout August. Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. If you have a photo you think readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Jordan Baker at jbaker@estvanmercury.ca.
