Cheers to Levi and Cara for bringing us Estevan Got Funk, Canada’s most audacious fitness community. Cheers to Logan Baniulis from Regens Disposal for his very candid and honest comments in the July 24 edition of the Estevan Mercury regarding the curbside garbage and recycling pick up. People really need to think twice before verbally abusing the Regens and City staff over garbage pick up before they have even tried it.

Jeers to the jeer regarding dirt and litter at the mall. We had a contractor booked in April to clean the parking lot so that it may be repainted. Due to equipment breakdowns, lack of staff and a little to do with the weather, he has not been here yet. The mall has no control over street sweepers on city streets.

Jeers to the people who insist on belabouring the garbage issue. Give it a rest people. Change is good donkey. Jeers to the contractors who start a job and then don’t finish it for months and sometimes not at all. Jeers to the drivers on Highway 39 between Roche Percee and Estevan.

Send your Cheer or Jeer to jbaker@estevanmercury.ca or send us a message on the Mercury’s Facebook page

Babies are invading fantasy sports When it comes to sports, it’s necessary to have someone to root for. A friend of mine told me he recently watched an Aussie Rules game. I don’t know the rules. He doesn’t know the rules. He didn’t know who was playing. He had no idea what the differences between the teams were. But he decided to watch it, and of course, picked a side. He said that after he picked a team to cheer for, he was then able to follow the flow of the action and even figure out partially what those crafty Aussies were up to on that enormous pitch. Getting in one team’s corner was all he needed to pay attention and care about what was happening. The same is true for our office golf pool. You need people to cheer for to make golf interesting. Sure, nobody cares about the LPGA side of the pool, but the PGA side is the basis for the majority of heckling, ball busting and swearing around the office. When I saw that Hunter Mahan was leading the Canadian Open last week, I was a little miffed. I had some Canadian Open favourites on my team who I expected would help to collect me some big money. Thankfully, Mahan’s wife went into labour, and he immediately took himself off the

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers course. Publisher Brant Kersey is the only one who has been cursing Mahan’s name this past week. The joke amongst those in the pool is that you can select a fantasy player in the LPGA and risk losing her to pregnancy, but the men’s side is supposed to be immune to that. Luckily for everyone in the pool, Mahan provided us with a special case. By walking off the course he failed to collect a paycheque this week, which would have been $1 million if he won the tournament. We may need more gentlemen in the gentlemen’s game willing to give up large dollars to sit in a hospital room for a few hours. I’m even hoping Mahan decides on a nice comfortable maternity leave. There’s no reason for him to leave a newborn just to play in a golf tournament in August or September, where most weeks carry a purse of about $8 million.

The Mahan case is a special one because of its implications on future golf pools. I might not want to select a married guy in his 30s if there is a 24-year-old rising star playing the field, both on and off the course. Research before the annual draft will now include looking deep into golfer’s personal lives. Now we’re going to need to be looking at golfers and asking ourselves, “Well, he has two kids already, what are the odds he wants a third?” Then you might want to look at some of the veterans, the guys who have been around a few courses in their day, because those guys are done having kids. The Steve Strickers and Phil Mickelsons of the world may see their stocks steadily rising as their prospects for more kids and time away from the game steadily decreases. Norm “Hyde” Park informed me that Bubba Watson did not leave the course last year when an adopted baby arrived. That makes Bubba a solid pick in my book. This whole baby business on the PGA Tour could throw on onslaught of intangibles into an already complicated pool system. Rotoworld is going to have to add baby plans to each golfers profile before draft days.

Sense of community dies with every lost village Recently I had a couple of experiences that really focused my thinking on the depopulation of rural Canada. The first was a short fishing trip out to the old Togo Bridge. The fishing was slow, so we toured toward the new Togo Bridge, which took us through what remains of Togo. There are a few homes, a hotel, a rink still stands, and that’s about it, except for a series of boarded up storefronts, which told the story that at one point in the not so distant past Togo was a bustling rural community. While it is now something of a skeleton of what it once was, I was left to wonder if there was any hope for its future. On the way to the second fishing hole we passed a new housing development on the hill overlooking the Assiniboine River. It’s not lakefront by a few hundred yards, but it is secluded and more connected to nature than any street in a city. I wonder if such developments, which pop up all over the place these days — there is a sign for acreages just west of Highway 9 north of Yorkton, and another one west toward Willowbrook — are particularly more rustic, or away from it all, than would living in Togo? The next trip was out to cover the 100th anniversary of the Village of Rhein. Again it is a community with a thriving past.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist A walk through the photo displays at the local senior centre showed that, and so too did talking to those gathered. They spoke of a community, which at one time numbered 500. There were grain elevators, machinery dealerships, grocery and hardware stores and a school. All are gone now. With each closure of an elevator, store or school, a community dies a little more. It is a death that has been repeated over and over across Canada, and actually across dryland farming areas around the world. Anyone with a farming tie can speak to the disappearance of rural communities. When I was pre-school age, mail came to us at Clashmoor. There was a store, elevator, post office stop and homes. Today the rail line is even gone. Not a single building, not even a dilapidated pile of boards, exists. The village site is now farmland with nothing to show it was once home to a community. Our next address was Eldersley, a community that had two grain elevators, a fire hall, two grocery stores, a community hall,

curling rink and a school. I never attended the school though. It was announced to close the year I started and my parents opted to send me directly to Tisdale rather than having to change schools after only one year. The school closed, the grocery stores followed, the curling rink closed from lack of interest, the grain elevators shut down in the move to inland terminals. Another village all but a memory. And that brings us back to Rhein. While it was nostalgic to attend the anniversary, it was a nostalgia tinged by the reality that the village has little hope of existing to mark another 100 years. As one participant said, he doubted 40. He was probably right. I recognize rural depopulation is a trend started at the end of the First World War, and the likelihood of that changing is nil. But that said, I am left with the feeling that each time a small rural community disappears from the map, the larger community of province and country are a bit worse off for the loss. The Rheins, Togos, Eldersleys and Clashmoors of this country had a sense of community, togetherness, of making the most of what exists at hand, which frankly does not translate to larger communities, and therein is the sadness of continued change.

Passenger ferries runs aground in Newfoundland

National PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. - Marine Atlantic says one of its passenger ferries has run aground while leaving Port aux Basques in southwestern Newfoundland. The ferry service says the MV Blue Puttees is stable and no injuries have been reported. Marine Atlantic spokesman Darrell Mercer says the ferry was carrying 398 passengers and 91 crew members when it hit the wharf at 8:32 a.m. local time. He says damage does not appear to be significant.

Local emergency officials have responded. It remained unclear how the situation occurred, and no one has been disciplined, said Eugene Iredale, an attorney for Chong, The Justice Department’s inspector general is investigating. “It sounded like it was an accident — a really, really bad, horrible accident,” Chong said. Chong was taken into

custody during a drug raid and placed in the cell in April 2012 by a police officer authorized to perform Drug Enforcement Administration work. The officer told Chong he would not be charged and said, “’Hang tight, we’ll come get you in a minute,’” Iredale said.
