Estevan is getting a lesson in Funkology By Jordan Baker Of the Southeast Trader Express They call themselves the most audacious fitness community in Canada, and they’re looking to foster a Culture of Funk in the Energy City. It’s called Funkology — not a scientific term — and it’s the basis for a robust workout that encourages fun, friendship and pushing yourself to do better. Founded by Levi Clampitt with Cara Lee getting in on the ground floor, the workouts sprung up from humble origins in December 2012. It all started with the Funk Walk. Unable to enjoy the outdoors in the middle of a Prairie winter, the group took to the Estevan Leisure Centre, donned weighted jackets and walked around the track in Spectra Place. A couple more people joined in, more activities were added to the workout and when May rolled around and the group was able to exercise outside, Funkology really took off. Clampitt said there are now about 60 people who will attend the weekly sessions on a regular basis, with about 20 showing up for each one. On July 31, I threw on gym shorts and running shoes to see exactly what this Culture of Funk was all about. Clampitt summed things up pretty quickly with an offhand remark to the participants following the warm-up. “Who knew working out could be fun?” he said. Clampitt and Lee are resident Funkologists, setting up and running different exercises with fellow organizers Blair Tinant, Rico Tomsha and Anastasiya Shved. Together they create a safe and friendly atmosphere that truly does make working out fun. It has to be fun and non-intimidating because that’s what keeps everyone coming back. “We put the fun in funky,” Clampitt said. “It’s
things Cara and Levi did, was every week was something new and different,” said Tomsha. “You see the tires over here, it’s amazing how much you can do with a tire.” “We want to keep it funky. It’s not just an exercise, it’s something unique,” added
Shved. Anybody looking for further information about the fitness group may check out the website www.funkology.info and through the website people are able to connect with the Facebook group.

that fun that you get from overcoming obstacles. You feel empowered. Over on my station, there’s a lot of people who are hating in the moment, it’s not fun for them. But afterwards, they pat themselves on their back.” The group is a non-profit entity. As Clampitt and Lee put it, they don’t make people pay, they let them. There is a donation box at each session, and participants can drop in some money if they choose. The money goes into a communal pot for team T-shirts, equipment and events as well as charities. The group’s last fundraiser for Get Active 4 Autism brought in $418 at one session. Growing from the Funk Walks to the Funk Sessions, Clampitt said everything has grown organically. He said they try to challenge everyone but also give people breaks. “And we reward them with ice cream,” added Lee, noting everyone who wants to come get ice cream after a session is welcome to join the group. “There’s always a lot of laughs here. It’s not like when you go to the gym. In a way, it feels like gym class, but gym class when you were seven years old and it was still fun.” The Funkology group also wants to help the participants build relationships outside of their weekly work-
outs. Aside from getting ice cream, they host barbecues and events in lots of casual environments. “This is a lifestyle. It’s not just a workout. It’s likeminded individuals and just meeting with them for dinner, parties, movies, whatever. Just being in their lives is what the funk is about,” said Clampitt. And when he says you need to experience Funkology to really understand it, he’s right. For those intimidated by fitness groups, the Funkologists and everyone else attending will put you at ease and let you go at your own pace. You’re only competing against yourself. Tomsha noted Clampitt repeatedly tells everyone, ‘There are no egos here.” When I attended a session last week, the group set up at the Estevan Comprehensive School’s football field. The exercises were divided into four stations and the larger group was split into groups of four. With small numbers of people in each station and then moving from spot to spot, the workout keeps everyone active regularly with some moments for breaks. Things started easy enough in my group with two sets of 20 lunges, followed by leg lifts. We quickly moved into military crawls before getting back on our feet for
agility steps and high-five planks. The next session involved a series of burpees, planks, one-arm planks and insect crawls, running each for 40 seconds at a time. The next station involved simply pulling a weight on a makeshift sled through the grass. Thirty seconds was all you needed for that one. The final station was for tire flips and pulls. I would have preferred the tire flip, but put up with the tire pull. The session ends with what the Funkologists call The Challenge. It’s a different activity each time. At the end of the previous session the group split into teams and pushed their cars to a finish line. This week the evening closed with the cone game, a mad dash around the field picking up and knocking over pylons to help your team win. Clampitt and Lee are now moving out of Estevan, but Funkology will continue under the guidance of Tinant, Tomsha and Shved who are looking forward to keeping the funk alive. The new Funkologists have been part of the team from almost the very beginning and wish to keep things going with new and innovative workouts. “I think we just want to keep on switching things up. I think that’s one of the best

There are many ways to define success Success, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Someone recently asked if my siblings were successful, specifically wondering if they were lawyers or doctors. They aren’t, but I thought they probably consider themselves reasonably successful for their ages. Only a couple of us are more than a few years away from school after all. The interested party happened to have a pretty narrow idea of what success was. Success was purely based on dollars and cents in her book. I consider myself successful purely by having a full-time job, and reasonably certain I’m not going to be axed by the company at any moment. I’ve worked under those conditions and it definitely didn’t help me feel successful. I have a sister who had a very goodpaying job, which she left to go back to school. She changed careers in her mid20s, makes a lot less money and feels much better about herself. She has goals and she may not feel fully successful until she meets those, but I think she considers herself a success for someone just a year out of her latest educational program. I have another brother who finished school in April and just started a job in his field at the end of June. That guy is swimming in success. I remember getting a job right out of school. It barely paid a livable
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers wage, but damn it, I felt pretty successful. I ended up working for a media company in a shroud of uncertainty with stock prices tanking throughout 2008, but it was better than nothing. Success at that time was just having a job. I have since both broadened and refined my definition of success, and maybe I just set the bar too low in an effort to keep from failing, but now a big test of success is the end of the vacation. How do you feel after a week or more away from your job? However much I may look forward to some time away from work, by the end of that week, I get pretty restless. As a generally fidgety guy, that can be pretty intolerable, so just wanting to go back to work is something I’ve encompassed into my prerequisites for success. Ideally, your job is your passion, but it’s still hard to be passionate about it all the time. The goal of taking time off is to be excited about going back to work
again. Not all of us are lucky enough to look forward to going back to work. At one time, I worked in a factory doing electrical work on trailer homes, fifth wheels, double-wides and cabins. It was assembly line work and while not everyone there were lifers, it was unbelievable how many guys had been there for 20, 25 or even 35 years and couldn’t tell me quick enough to get out of that line of work as soon as I could. It’s not the worst job I’ve had, but there’s something so ultimately depressing about beginning your day at the sound of a horn and then having it dictate your breaks and working until the horn tells you to stop. It didn’t feel like we had made much progress from the early days of the Industrial Revolution. Those were people who left for their vacations and then dreaded the moment it ended. Maybe they couldn’t wait to get back so they could earn another paycheque, and to some, that’s all the success they need. Now I measure success by how I feel at the end of a vacation. Some people say your job is your passion only if you want to be working every time you aren’t. We all need a little time off, even from our passions. Success is wanting and maybe even needing to go back to work after time away.
Careful crop rotation boon to Prairie farmers Attending farm plot tours is often pretty farmer specific. I mean that in the sense that comparing one canola variety against another is something of interest only to a canola producer. But there are elements of such tours that are interesting to a broader range of producers, and in some cases should make the general public take a bit of notice too. Such was the case recently when Friendly Acres Seed Farm held its plot tours. The father and son operation near Saltcoats has long been known for growing oats but more recently has diversified into what are new crops for the region, in particular soybeans. For Canadian Prairie producers, soybeans are just now becoming viable as new varieties have been developed requiring fewer days to reach maturity. On an international basis, soybeans are a huge crop, in particular in the United States and South America, so it is a well-developed market. At present Saskatchewan is just starting to explore with soybeans, with less acres planted this spring than those devoted to chickpeas, said Kevin Elmy, and chickpeas are a very minor crop in the province. While offering Prairie farmers here a chance to enter a very large market crop, growing soybeans is not just about produc-
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ing bushels and hauling them to market, or at least that is how Elmy looks at the crop as part of a larger picture. Soybeans as a legume crop, actually produce nitrogen as part of their natural growth process. As a general rule every inch of green plant growth fixates 10 pounds of nitrogen. To produce those yields nitrogen is a key nutrient, and as a result farmers invest a sizable amount of the annual crop input costs into adding it in the form of fertilizer. While soybeans, of course, use a sizable amount of nitrogen, Elmy said for every bushel per acre produced, six pounds of nitrogen are utilized. Over time soybeans can give back to the soil. Elmy said that is a key for him as he looks to create a low cost, sustainable crop production system. That is why Elmy also grows alfalfa and sainfoin. They too are nitrogen-fixing legumes, and while harvesting one cut of the
crop for livestock feed, a second cut can be left as essentially a green manure nutrient source, which goes back to the soil. Mix in soil building crops such as field radish, and over time the nitrogen needs for a crop such as canola are built up in the soil from previous crops. Elmy said the fertilizer bill on the farm is down to an average of $10 per acre. That is a miniscule number compared to most. The system borrows many of its principles from organic production, although Elmy is not full blown into organics. He inoculates seed, top dresses nutrients when needed, and sprays if weeds and insects come along. But he is working hard to create a crop rotation less reliant on the fertilizer agent and chequebook, and he says it’s working. One can imagine that while full organic systems might not be viable on the largest farms, and in terms of maximizing yields in the face of a growing population, there are principles that can help reduce inputs. The ability to control weeds and pests with particular crop rotations might drop the crop protection product costs just as Elmy has used them to reduce his fertilizer bill. Ultimately, that is a key for farmers, reducing costs while keeping yields high, and there is growing evidence it is possible to do both via good crop rotation planning.

Lost Canadian may overhaul immigration laws National VANCOUVER - Canadian citizenship laws may need to be overhauled if a so-called “lost Canadian” wins her legal battle. Jackie Scott, 68, was refused citizenship even though she came to Canada with her British mother and Canadian father at the age of two. A judicial review of that refusal was scheduled for July, but Scott put it on hold so she and her lawyers could broaden the court action. Documents filed Friday in Federal Court in Vancouver show Scott is petitioning for “declarations” from the court that could have serious ramifications for Canadian citizenship, including whether Parliament has total control over who is considered Canadian. Scott said even though she would have loved to settle her own citizenship dispute back in July, her

fight has become about much more than herself. “It would be very selfish of me just to say it’s about me, because it’s not,” she said in an interview on Monday. “If we’re successful we can finally resolve the issue for many people.” Scott was born in England in 1945 to a Canadian serviceman and a British woman and later migrated to Canada. *** ST. JOHN’S, N.L. Cpl. Jamie MacWhirter survived seven months in Afghanistan in 2006 but found that, once safely back in Canada, a dark battle within himself escalated out of control. It started during his single tour of Afghanistan’s most volatile war zones as the driver of a refuelling truck loaded with 10,000 litres of diesel. His nickname was “Fireball” for the most obvious related hazards.
Near misses included rocket attacks, the horror of a suicide bombing that killed several children, firefights, roadside bombs and long weeks outside the relative safe zone of the Kandahar Airfield. Sleep became elusive and fraught with nightmares. MacWhirter, 37, chronicles them along with the tedium punctuated by terror of a grunt’s existence in his new memoir “A Soldier’s Tale: A Newfoundland Soldier in Afghanistan.” “It was over a year before I realized something was different,” he said of his return to Edmonton. “What threw me over the edge was, even today, I get angry for no reason.” Almost seven years since he returned home, MacWhirter sees a psychiatrist regularly and figures he probably will for life. He got clearance from the military to publish

his recollections based on a journal he kept while overseas. He wanted to convey what troops and their families go through on volunteer missions that take a steep toll both during and after deployment. International MILWAUKEE - A Chinese researcher has been sentenced to two years of probation on charges related to the theft of a research drug from a U.S. medical school. Zhao Huajun was also sentenced Tuesday to time served for the four and a half months he has spent behind bars. A federal complaint accused Zhao of stealing a possible cancer-fighting compound and its accompanying research, with the intent of passing it off as his own in China. The compound was never found. Zhao pleaded guilty in July to a reduced charge
of illegally downloading research data from the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher. He said he only intended to protect the data and not to profit from it. *** HIROSHIMA, Japan - Japan marked the 68th anniversary Tuesday of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a sombre ceremony to honour the dead and pledges to seek to eliminate nuclear weapons. Some 50,000 people stood for a minute of silence in Hiroshima’s peace park near the epicenter of the early morning blast on Aug. 6, 1945, that killed up to 140,000 people. The bombing of Nagasaki three days later killed tens of thousands more, prompting Japan’s surrender to the World War II Allies. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, among many dignitaries attending the event, said

that as the sole country to face nuclear attack, Japan has the duty to seek to wipe out nuclear weapons. He made no mention of the dilemma this resourcescarce country is facing over nuclear energy, nor of the tens of thousands of people displaced by risks from radioactivity from a nuclear disaster in Fukushima, in its northeast. Most of Japan’s nuclear power plants were taken offline after the massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011 damaged reactors at a plant in Fukushima, causing meltdowns. Abe favours restarting plants under new safety guidelines, while many Japanese oppose such restarts. There are over 200,000 “hibakusha,” surviving victims from the atomic bombings, with an average age of nearly 79. Many gathered in Hiroshima to burn incense, bowing in prayer.

Suspensions handed out in biogenesis scandal National TORONTO - A week after winning her first grand slam title, Marion Bartoli says she awoke to a spectacular view in her bedroom. It was a shining Wimbledon trophy and a reminder that all the hard work over her decade-plus career had finally paid off. “I love it,” Bartoli says of her prize. “I hope it will not change me as a person.” Bartoli enters the Rogers Cup women’s tournament as the seven-seed and with expectations much higher than the world No. 8-ranked player has normally been accustomed to. Her straight sets victory over Germany’s Sabine Lisicki in the Wimbledon final was a milestone for the 28-year-old, who continually came up empty in the big tournaments. Despite 46 grand slams appearances, she had no title and only one finals showing at the 2007 Wimbledon, when she lost to Serena Williams. This breakthrough has given Bartoli a renewed
confidence in both her game and her ability to step up at the slams. *** Shawn Burr, who spent most of his 16-year NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, died Monday night. Dave Goetze, who runs the Shawn Burr Foundation, told the Detroit Free Press that the 47-year-old had died after sustaining massive brain trauma when he fell earlier at his home in St. Clair, Mich. Diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in 2010, Burr spent the last three years of his life battling the disease. The Sarnia, Ont., native was selected seventh overall by Detroit in the first round of the 1984 NHL Draft and played with the Red Wings until 1995. Burr also played for the San Jose Sharks and Tampa Bay Lightning before retiring in 2000. He finished his career with 181 goals and 440 points in 878 regular-season games. Rodriguez is intent on evading baseball’s most sweeping punishment since the Black Sox scandal. Rodriguez was suspended through 2014 andAllStars Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta and Everth Cabrera were banned 50 games apiece Monday when Major League Baseball disciplined 13 players for their relationship to Biogenesis of America, a Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. The harshest penalty was reserved for Rodriguez, the New York Yankees slugger, a three-time Most Valuable Player and baseball’s
highest-paid star. He said he will appeal his suspension, which covers 211 games, by Thursday’s deadline. And since arbitrator Fredric Horowitz isn’t expected to rule until November or December at the earliest, Rodriguez was free to make his season debut Monday night and play the rest of this year. Sidelined since hip surgery in January, Rodriguez rejoined the Yankees five hours after the suspension in a series opener at the Chicago White Sox, playing third base and batting fourth. “The last seven months has been a nightmare, has been probably the worst time of my life for sure,” Rodri-
guez said before the game. Booed loudly each time he walked to the plate, Rodriguez went 1 for 4 in New York’s 8-1 loss. He blooped a single to left field in the second inning, flied out in the fourth and sixth, then struck out in the eighth. He acknowledged he felt rusty in the field, though he made all his plays. *** ATLANTA - Atlanta police say they’ve made an arrest in a burglary at baseball great Hank Aaron’s home. Police Sgt. Greg Lyon says one suspect was in custody Monday night. He tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that po-
lice anticipate more arrests. Police did not immediately release the name of the suspect or other details. The crime happened while the 79-year-old Aaron and his wife were away from home in July. A neighbour saw a broken window, and officers arrived to find two BMWs missing from the garage and closets ransacked. Jewelry and car keys were the only other items taken. A Mobile, Ala., native, Aaron played from 1954 to 1976 for Milwaukee and Atlanta. As an Atlanta Brave, Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s record of 714 career home runs in 1974.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TA U R U S ( A p r i l 2 0 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon
find the situation shifting in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters
could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -- no, demand -- help with this problem.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work.
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2013 CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually sure-footed Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19
Page 7
to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of what’s right can inspire others if you remember not to push too hard to make your case. Moderation works best for you. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
