Racing in Rio to raise funds to fight diabetes She will be assigned a number on race day, but it’s the number she raises beforehand that means the most for Rachelle Axten. The young woman from Minton is preparing for her first marathon in order to raise donations and awareness for the Canadian Diabetes Association. In July, Axten will be heading to Brazil to attend the 2012 Rio Marathon in Rio de Janeiro. Her preparations begin at home however, and she has been challenged by Team Diabetes Canada to raise $6,100 leading up to the big race in Rio. This is her first involvement in raising money to combat diabetes and said she decided to become more active in raising money and awareness for the Diabetes Association because her grandfather has been dealing with the disease for a long time and it has begun to get worse. “He’s been quite sick with it, so I just want to get awareness out there because I’ve seen what they go through,” she said. “How they have to deal with it everyday, I don’t want my own father to end up like my grandpa and get sick. This is just my own sort of way of showing them (that I care) and helping them, I guess.” Her father has also been diagnosed with diabetes. The 19-year-old said she told her family about her plans to raise money and race in Rio, and they have

Both of my parents are planning on coming, and we’ll see who else decides to come
on a vacation.” Once she put her mind to running the marathon, Axten found that of the available races she could go to, the Rio race was going to work out best for her. “I’ll be done school and working,” she said, noting that she’ll get some time off for it. “And it’s Brazil.
Who doesn’t want to go to Brazil?” Axten said she’s been running her whole life but has never run in an actual marathon. She’s competed at some smaller races, like a 10 kilometre run. An official marathon is a little more than 42 kilometres. “I’ve never done that distance, but I’ve always run. I’ve done track and field and all that stuff,” she said, adding, “I’m nervous, very nervous, but I’m real excited too. I think it will be a really good time. It will be hard, but it’s worth it.” Axten is attending school at the SIAST Palliser Campus for engineering design and drafting technology and is now doing her third and final work placement at Midwest Surveys in Estevan. Her first two were done at Midwest as well. The race will be her first marathon, though she is considering taking part in a race in Calgary or Edmon-
ton beforehand as a bit of a confidence boost. She hasn’t yet started the most intense training, but she is going for regular runs of between six and eight miles now. While training for the July 8 race, she will slowly be increasing the distance she runs, but is also very cognizant of the need to manage her nutrition properly while she trains. She got involved with Team Diabetes, or Team D, and they are the running team for the Diabetes Association, organizing everybody who is going to be racing for the Canadian team. Axten researched how she wanted to raise money and naturally became part of the team, which provides her with all the information she needs. They set up the flights and hotels, and the team makes sure she gets to and from the race, so Axten’s focus can be on running and then relaxing with her family afterward. She’ll head down to Rio with the team of Saskatchewan runners and be staying with the Canadian team while down there. Her training can get lonely because she doesn’t have a running buddy. “Nobody really wants to do the distances that I do, so I kind of get stuck alone,” she said, adding that she trains outside whenever she can, but has to retreat to the treadmill during the coldest months of the year. She’s slowly been raising money for about eight months, already realizing more than half of her goal,
with about $3,300 so far. She has until next September to raise the remaining funds. “I’ve been selling chocolates, which people think is kind of silly that you’d sell chocolates for diabetes, but it’s a way raise to money,” she said. She is also going to be holding a poker tournament in Minton on January 21. She hopes that will bring in about $1,000. She and another woman from Minton who is running in another race for Joints in Motion decided to get together to organize the poker night. Though Axten has a very concrete goal when it comes to the funds she is raising, her other goal is to simply teach people something new about diabetes. “People think that it’s based on sugar, that you can’t have absolutely any sugar. That’s a big misconception about diabetes. It really has to do with how you eat and proportioning your eating. Exercise is a huge thing, and I don’t think a lot of people realize that. You know what really grinds my gears? This week’s edition is an affectionate homage to the You know what really grinds my gears? segment of a popular cartoon. This past week a number of things have really ground my gears. While I am trying to be in a reasonably happy mood for the upcoming holiday season, there are a lot of things still trying to bring me down. I like to focus on the positive, but this week I need to exorcise all the things that are weighing on me. American politics is always sure to make the blood boil, but last week it was Republican presidential nominee hopeful Rick Perry who said in a campaign that he had a problem with gay men and women being permitted to serve openly in American military roles. How an individual can be so intolerant and backward is unfathomable. This is a man who is expecting to be welcomed into the White House in 2013. We have gay teens committing suicide, in part because of abuse by their peers, and people who are supposed to be our world leaders, setting an example of our moral code, still have a problem with gay people serving their countries. Until people with these hang-ups are completely out of power, we are going to gain absolutely no ground in creating a world that is open to and accepting of all.
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers If there’s one thing I refuse to tolerate, it’s intolerance. You know what else really grinds my gears? The Kyoto Protocol and our exit from it. Canada is not usually the first to do anything on the world stage. We take a wait-and-see approach so as not to ruffle too many feathers. In most cases we wait for the United States to make a firm decision and then step in line with them. We are finally first to make a big move on something, and what is it? We abandon an international pledge to pollute less. That’s the whole idea behind climate change or global warming or whatever. It doesn’t matter what you call it or whether you think it’s just a left-wing scheme to control society. Pollution is a problem, and we should have a strategy to reduce our share of it globally. We weren’t going to meet the targets, partly because it was never a priority of our federal government and partly because the
targets were maybe a little unreasonable. We aren’t the biggest polluter on the planet, but if we expect to help put pressure on China and India to reduce their share, we need to lead by example and show them how it’s done. We made an agreement to the rest of the world that we would do our part, and then we told everyone else to shove it. For that I feel a little less proud to be a Canadian. You know what final thing grinds my gears this week? Tebow Time. The Denver Broncos mediocre prospect quarterback Tim Tebow, who took over starting duty after the team had an embarrassing start, hasn’t lost a game yet. Being the primary change up to the team, all the praise for the turnaround has been heaped onto him, even though he’s looked terrible, performed poorly and has struggled to do anything. He’s thrown 11 touchdowns against two interceptions in eight games, but is completing fewer than 50 per cent of his attempts, has been sacked 23 times and fumbled seven times. Last Sunday, the Broncos’ kicker belted a 59-yard field goal to tie the game against the Bears, then nailed a 51-yard field goal in overtime to win the game. What were the headlines the next day? Tebow does it again! Tebow didn’t do jack and for that he really grinds my gears.
Mixed results for diversity goals The concept of diversification for Western Canadian agriculture was pretty much the mantra of both government and farm groups for the better part of the 1990s, but was it a successful vision for the industry? That is a question of some considerable conjecture, depending upon how one envisions it. On the crops side of farming, we have certainly seen a few crops gain major interest and acreage - in particular legume crops, with lentils and peas leading the way. There is also interest now emerging for soybeans in non-traditional growing areas. That said, this space once focused on the potential of lupines to become a signifi cant crop, and pinto beans were heralded in the same way. Neither has turned out to be widely grown. You can add quinoa, echinacea, fenugreek, sea buckthorn and industrial hemp as other crops that were suggested as potential options, and that for the most part, did not turn out to be more than a passing fad. Of course a field crop is basically a one-year experiment. Farmers grow a crop, see what the market returns are, then add it to the rotation on a permanent basis, or move on to something else. When you turn your attention to the livestock side of farming, the time invest-
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ment grows substantially. You do not build a flock of ostrich or a herd of fallow deer overnight. Initially, breeding stock is in short supply when the next hot farm animal bursts onto the scene, and farmers are left with major cash investments followed by years of herd building. They must hope a market has developed, and the end product - what is sold to market rather than for breeding - is such there is a profit to be realized. For the most part livestock diversification has been a dismal failure. You would drive a lot of miles to find a farmer on the Prairies still raising ostrich, emu, and fallow deer. Llamas, elk, and other species have survived, but you can’t really call them widely successful either. So when you meet someone being successful in an area in which most have not been, it is interesting. The successes show perseverance, and generally a willingness to build market, not just raise the stock. At a time almost every other breeder in
Saskatchewan has given up, Joy Popowich of Saltcoats has done that by managing to fi nd ways to make her meat rabbits profitable. Polly Schindel from Lintlaw has done much the same as she and her husband Bob have developed one of Saskatchewan’s largest alpaca herds. While alpaca fleece produces a high quality fibre, there has never been a large processor here to help develop a market, and so the industry has struggled. It seems stuck at that point where a processor is needed to grow numbers, but numbers are needed for a major processor to be viable. Schindel has ignored the impasse by having processing done out of province, and the yarn then turned into garments that she direct markets. It’s more work than growing a field of wheat and taking it to the elevator, or raising a calf and selling it to a feedlot. But it is also a way of developing a market for something new that you believe in. While in general terms diversifi cation has failed more than farmers would have hoped, mainly because of a lack of viable processors and markets, there are examples of producers who have made it work. It may not be the producing and hauling to market-style farming most are used to it, but it can carve out niches that can raise the returns of the farm.

A very Bieber week After writing the She said, I find myself thinking about Justin Bieber. Not that this is an uncommon occurrence for me, or for young women (OK, mostly pre-teens) around the globe. Justin Bieber is probably the most famous person in the world right now. He’s awesome. But what exactly is it that makes him so wonderful? Because I’ve seen (and own) his biographical movie, Never Say Never, I know the details of his humble beginning and his exciting rise to fame and fortune. There’s no denying that he’s a talented singer and performer, but is he really that exceptional that he deserves to command the attention of Earth’s female population, ages three to 25? When Justin entered the music scene, he was cute and different. He had a good voice and a silly, swooping haircut. Then he cut his hair and aged, kind of rapidly. His voice changed. Now he’s 17, dating an older woman (Selena Gomez) and insisting on wearing clothes several sizes too big. If I’m being quite honest, he sometimes looks like a boy parad-

It’s so charming! And seems so genuine! He isn’t perfect, but he isn’t trying to be. He routinely makes out with Selena in public, and has to know that photos are going to surface. He battled through a baby-daddy scare. He whines about school work on Twitter, like many other teenage students. This, plus the cocky, self-satisfied attitude, makes him super dreamy. He’s average and normal while being loaded and famous. It’s the perfect personality balance. He can be anything to anyone. I’m a fan. And a Twitter follower. I’ll probably buy his next CD. And watch his movie sometime during my Christmas break. Justin Bieber, you’re great. He regularly (and annoyingly) retweets messages from his 15,382,961 Twitter followers. And he always expresses his thankfulness for those who have supported his dream. Which is better: contemporary or traditional Christmas carols?

I bought two Christmas CDs this year: Justin Bieber’s Under the Mistletoe and Michael Buble’s Christmas. Each artist took a different route with his album. Buble’s CD is traditional, featuring carols that most of us have been singing since elementary school Christmas assemblies. Bieber’s features a handful of traditional carols, mixed with his own unique compositions. Both CDs are decent, though fans of one aren’t guaranteed to enjoy the other. Having been listening to them both for around a month, I have to say that a good, classic Christmas carol is the best. It’s familiar and cozy, and most people will know the words almost immediately. Contemporary songs, while they offer artists freedom and a chance to put their own personal touch on Christmas, just don’t fit. They’re too new, too different, to fit in among long-established holiday traditions. Traditional carols are traditional because they have staying power. They’re so awesome that they’ve survived the A.D.D. of society and turned into classics. People love them. And like all things people love about Christmas, they’re slow to change and most people aren’t happy about the change in the first place. You wouldn’t replace green and red with orange and pink as the official colours of Christmas, right? Or replace Santa Claus as the hero of the holidays with the star of your favourite TV series? It just feels unnatural. So while Justin Bieber’s Mistletoe is a decent song, it doesn’t have the staying power of Silent Night or Jingle Bells, regardless of how adorable Bieber is.

In the latest instalment of the He Said/She Said Christmas edition, we’re looking at whether hip, new Christmas songs are topping the classic Christmas carols. This is a resounding yes. Christmas is all about having a good time, and the contemporary world of Christmas music has so much to offer that follows that agenda. Look no further than Run DMC’s Christmas in Hollis from 1987. It’s exactly what Christmas should be. The great thing about contemporary carols is that they can just stand alone as great songs. Christmas in Hollis isn’t just Run DMC’s Christmas song, it’s one of their greatest and most well known works. The song and the music video are both iconic. That’s one of the most fun songs to listen to, and Christmas is one of the most fun times of the year. Chuck Berry’s Run Rudolph Run is a classic. Again, this song is one of the most fun ones out there. It’s been covered by pretty much everyone who has ever performed music professionally. Joni Mitchell’s River is a classic from her early stuff back in 1971. It’s a little lonelier than Run Rudolph Run, but it’s still good. Last Christmas by Wham! is one I wouldn’t really get into, but I do have some aunts who really dig that stuff. They probably still have Wham! posters in their closets. The No. 1 redeeming quality of the traditional carols is the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Those guys know how to pump out a really awesome Christmas album. There is so much to choose from when it comes to contemporary Christmas music. These songs are what really encapsulate the Christmas season.

Alameda 4-H Beef Club News During November, in celebration of National 4-H Month, the Alameda 4-H Beef Club set up an exhibit at the Alameda School to display the previous years’s events, activities and Achievement Days. Three of the senior members, Megan Bergsveinson, Christina Freitag and Alex Neuman attended and competed in the Canadian Western Agribition 4-H Team Grooming Competition. Although they were not winners, they had fun and represented the club well! Congratulations to Cody Fitzpatrick who placed second on his record book at the Fall Rally while competing against other top record books in District 41. On Dec. 13, the club held their third meeting of the year and decided to hold the annual Christmas party on Dec. 18 by going swimming in Estevan followed by a Pizza Hut lunch. Two senior teams and one junior team are entered in the district curling competition and one clover-bud member in the district’s fun spiel.
Members will be reciting speeches at the next meeting, and they will be holding their first “Rate of Gain” on Jan. 8 when their calves will be weighed and they will work on record books, followed by a potluck supper. It was decided to change from winning plaques at our local Achievement Day to winning prizes such as show canes, lawn chairs, other show supplies and duffle

Who needs to clean their windows? Surely not drivers In recent months I have grown increasingly frustrated with a couple of service stations in town. Fuelling up on Monday was the final straw. Because I had been on the road recently, like pretty much anyone else who drives, my windows were dirty. “Fill ‘er up,” I said, “and please clean the windows.” “We don’t clean windows in winter,” I was told. I was expecting this by now, but was frustrated nonetheless. Inside I found a yellow bucket filled with dry squeegees, and not one squeegee outside. Perhaps they were taking shelter from the -5 C temperatures. While it is much easier for me to drive three blocks to fuel up at another gas station, I instead got in my SUV last week and drove across town specifically to fill up at this station. I am willing to take the extra 10 minutes to drive to fill up at my regular station. There was not one squeegee available in any of the 10 squeegee stations, nor was there a pail inside or outside of the station. I asked the attendant why not, and she said it was too cold; they freeze up. They only had one jug of antifreeze left, she added.
She would go out and clean them if I really wanted, in a voice that sounded like, “Yes, I know you’re whining, but I will do whatever I need to in order to shut you up.” It was -9 C at the time. This is just the start of winter. This is not the first time I have heard this from a gas station. I heard it last winter too. Does this mean for the next four or five months I cannot clean my windows? After Monday, apparently, that’s the case. Amazingly enough, as I drove home last week, I happened upon two other gas stations, and both of which had squeegees and antifreeze. One was running a little low on windshield antifreeze, but it still had some in the buckets. The other location had the antifreeze full and squeegees positioned in all of its buckets. Apparently they are aware that it gets cold in Canada, and people need to clean their windows, primarily as a safety measure. God forbid I get into an accident because I can’t see out of my rear window. Why would I want to see there? The lack of the ability to clean my windows at my favourite gas station for the next five months would

Not one of the 10 paper towel stations had paper towel. “It gets too windy,” the attendant said, adding the paper towels blow away. If so, they need a different style of dispenser, or should use rolls that are less prone to blowing away. The wind blows in Saskatchewan, or so I heard. What’s that? Sorry, couldn’t hear you over the wind. Perhaps having the capability to clean windows is overstated, since the “We serve” philosophy has seemed rather pass over the past year. It is exceptionally rare to get my windows cleaned at either of the gas stations I frequent, except for when the older gentleman at the pump was kind enough to do them a month ago. The local stations
should not feel too bad, however, since they are not alone within this chain. Indeed, having to clean your own windows is now commonplace in the stations that post that “We serve.” This past summer I drove from Estevan to Shaunavon, fuelling at several of these stations along the way. Not once, on the way there or back, did I have my windows cleaned by an attendant. Twenty years ago I worked as a gas pump jockey. I was expected to clean the windows on every vehicle and offer to check the oil, in addition to pumping the gas. Those were my three primary responsibilities. If I didn’t do that, I didn’t have a job. It was that simple. I will give these gas stations one more chance. After that, I’m jumping ship. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. Wind project receives concerns in Saskatoon PROVINCIAL SASKATOON - Saskatoon Light and Power has released reports by doctors and other experts saying there are no health effects expected with the Tall Wind Turbine Project. There have been public concerns expressed about wind turbine low frequency sound, or infrasound, and shadow flicker, the visual effect caused by sunlight passing through wind turbines. Company spokesman Kevin Hudson says concerns raised in other parts of the world over wind turbines and health are caused by sites with inadequate setback from residences. But he says at a distance of 300 metres, the sound is no longer perceptible. He says at the Tall Wind site, the nearest residences are half a kilometre away. NATIONAL TORONTO - Canadian officials may have turned him down, but an American man says he’s not ready to give up his dream of walking a tightrope suspended across Niagara Falls. Nik Wallenda, a stunt artist hailing from seven generations of circus performers, was told by the Niagara Parks Commis-
sion late Wednesday that he wouldn’t be allowed to go ahead with his stunt even though U.S. officials provided their permission weeks earlier. The 32-year-old said he respects the parks commission decision but now plans to take his proposed stunt to Ontario’s tourism minister with backing he says he’s already received from the region’s provincial member of parliament and the mayor of Niagara Falls. *** QUEBEC - Quebec is set to take legal action against the federal government to save data from the soon-to-be-abolished longgun registry. The Canadian Press has learned the Quebec government will announce the move tomorrow. The province’s public security minister, Robert Dutil, will reveal details of the legal suit while accompanied by police brass, police unions, victims’ groups and crime experts. The Conservatives have been working for years to end a registry they call wasteful, ineffective, and which they oppose on principle. INTERNATIONAL
MOSCOW - Mikhail Prokhorov, one of Russia’s richest tycoons and the owner of the New Jersey Nets basketball team, said Monday he will run against Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the March presidential election. Prokhorov, whose wealth Forbes magazine has estimated at $18 billion, has been cautious not to cross Putin’s path in the past. But the tycoon’s candidacy may now pose a serious challenge to Putin, whose authority has been dented by his party’s poor showing in Russia’s Dec. 4 parliamentary election and allegations of widespread fraud during the balloting. Putin’s party only won about 50 per cent of that vote, compared to 64 per cent four years ago, and the fraud allegations have allowed opposition parties to successfully mount massive anti-Putin protests in Russia. *** WA S H I N G T O N The U.S. Supreme Court agreed Monday to rule on a politically charged law in Arizona targeting illegal immigrants. The immigration case stems from the Obama administration’s furious legal
fight against a patchwork of state laws aimed at stopping illegal immigration. Arizona and other states say the federal government is not doing enough to address illegal immigration and that states on the
border with Mexico, including Arizona, are suffering disproportionately. The administration of President Barack Obama argues that regulating immigration is the job of the federal government,

For Barbara and all the other moms caught up in year-end Christmas celebrations Have you ever had one of those mornings when you feel like you’re on top of everything (lunches for the little ones, hubby out the door to work, older kids organized for the day) and then all of a sudden the world around you seems to fall when your child in the back of the car says, “Oh no, it’s the Christmas assembly today and we’re supposed to be dressed in something Christmassy today!” As I looked in the rearview mirror, I saw my little angel sitting in full school uniform without a stitch of Christmas reference on her person. As I drove down the driveway towards school, all I could see is a sea of bobbing Santa hats as the other children made
their way to their classes. I did what all of us would do at that moment ... I said, “Honey, I’ll be back before assembly starts.” All the while I’m praying that the shop will be open, that they will have something and that I will get back, as I promised, before assembly starts. As I tore out of the school driveway (minding the 40km/h zone) my mind raced. Do I go to the supermarket and hope they have something appropriate or do I go to the new Christmas Lights store up the road and hope that they carry more than lights? I knew that the Lights store probably didn’t open until 9 a.m., but I thought it would be my best option ... The Lights store won!

have cash.” How great is that - I love women on a mission, especially when it involves their children. The store finally opened, Barbara and I rushed in and found what we needed. We found the cutest headbands in the shape of reindeer antlers with bells on them and little brown ears sticking out the side (so cute!). We knew our little ones would LOVE them so we both took one and headed to the counter ready to pay. Barbara confidently handed over her $50 bill at which point the shop assistant asked if we had anything smaller. Barbara and I instantly froze thinking, we need these antlers and we don’t have anything less ... panic, what were we going to do? I think the girl behind the counter could tell how desperate we were and being an understanding girl (maybe a mom herself, I’m not sure) she politely said, “you can just have them, that’s fine.” Barbara and I were both extremely shocked by her kindness - almost speechless (sadly this kind of stuff doesn’t happen that often anymore) so we emptied our change on the counter leaving her with approximately $2.95 and a HUGE thank you. We both jumped in our cars and headed back to school. On our way
back, we found ourselves side-by-side on the road. Barbara was signalling to me that we both needed to breathe deep, I was signalling to her how I wished the bus in front of us would make way for two mothers on a mission. We arrived just as the classes where filing into the auditorium for the assembly. Barbara raced to her daughter’s class and I raced to mine. We made it ... and the look on our children’s faces was so worth every second spent. As we left the auditorium we gave each other a high-five, breathed a sigh of peace and knew exactly what the other was thinking ... we were great moms today. Yes, we both forgot something important but we didn’t let that get us down (I believe that guilt is highly overrated). Rather we changed directions, focused and made the reindeer antlers a priority. So to my new friend and mother who is determined to be the best mom for her children - this one’s for you Barbara. You inspired me today and reminded me that all the crazy things I do to make life great for my family are worth it. Thank you for being great and for caring! Susan J. Coalers add to last year’s success The Big Six Hockey League is well under way, and the Bienfait Coalers are off to a near perfect start following their league championship win last season. The Coalers are once again near the top of the league’s standings, with a 7-0-1 start, second only to the undefeated Arcola-Kisbey Combines. The hot start is thanks in large part to tight defence and great goaltending. The team is second in scoring but is first in goals against, allowing only 19 goals in eight games. Jackson Walliser took the team’s only blemish of the year between the pipes but has carried a league leading 1.97 goal against average in the six games he’s started this year. The Coalers’ offence has been incredibly productive as well, and the team boasts three of the top-four point getters in the league through the first few weeks.
That includes Brennan Wrigley who is tied for the league lead with 17 points and sits alone atop the Big Six in goals, with 10. The Coalers won both their games last weekend on the road by scores of 8-3 and 5-1 over Carnduff and Oxbow, respectively. The Lampman Imperials have been the Mr. Hyde to Bienfait’s Jekyll, beginning their season with nine straight losses and being outscored by their opponents 83 to 29 in that span. The most recent defeats came last Friday suffering a 9-1 loss to Oxbow, followed by a much closer 7-6 contest in Carnduff. Coming off their appearance in the Big Six championship series, the Midale Mustangs have had a less than stellar start, going 2-4-1 in their first seven games. Last year they topped the league, winning 15 of 18. They have managed to keep
the games tight though, losing most by a goal or two. Goaltender Tanner Erickson was third in the league last year with a 2.69 GAA, losing just one game, but this year is 1-4-1 with a 3.97 GAA. He hasn’t much help. While last year the Mustangs led the league in scoring by 20 goals, this year the team has struggled to find the back of the net, burying a leaguelow 22 goals in seven games. Midale had a game against Wawota postponed last Friday and lost 6-4 at home to Redvers. In other Big Six action on the weekend Arcola beat Redvers 5-3 last Friday. There are seven games slated for this weekend, and Lampman, Bienfait and Midale will all be hosting games. serving 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Lightly butter 2-quart shallow oval baking dish. 2. Into medium bowl, sift together cocoa powder and flour. In large bowl, with mixer on medium-high speed, beat eggs and sugar 5 to 10 minutes or until very thick and light yellow. 3. Pour mixture into prepared dish set in larger baking pan. Add hot tap water to pan to come halfway up side of dish. 5. Bake exactly 1 hour. A toothpick inserted 2 inches from side will come out clean. Center will appear very under-
baked. Cool completely. 6. Serve with ice cream. Serves 12. TIP: To make ahead, wrap; refrigerate up to 3 days. Packers poised for pigskin perfection Is this the year the Miami champagne corks stay unpopped? If Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers have anything to say about it, the answer is yes. You see, every year for the past 38 years, surviving members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins - the last National Football League team to go undefeated en route to the Super Bowl title - have a champagne celebration as soon as the last undefeated team in the NFL finally loses. This could be the year the champagne stays in the bottle. Rodgers and the Packers won their first 13, and two of their final three games were at home. The only road game was at woeful Kansas City. Will playoff pressure get to Green Bay and spoil the perfect season? Hardly. The Packers are the defending Super Bowl champs, so they had their playoff butterflies flying in formation last year. This year should be even easier. Rodgers, who patiently waited on the bench for three years for Brett Favre to finally retire, is having an all-world
season. His passer rating is 125.3 (Peyton Manning, in 2004, holds the record at 121.1), he is completing about 70 per cent of his passes and through 13 weeks had thrown 39 touchdowns and only six interceptions - a championship calibre ratio. “You see a quarterback that can make every throw on the field,” Oakland cornerback Stanford Routt said. “He has great receivers, great schemes, great defence - he’s got basically everything you need to be successful.” The Packers are scoring a league-high 36 points per game, with Rodgers piling up an average in excess of 300 passing yards a game. He is far and away the NFL’s most valuable player, but those stats might wane down the stretch as coach Mike McCarthy considers resting some starters in preparation for the playoff battle. (Indianapolis Colts did that a couple of years ago, almost going out of their way to lose a game to ease the pressure of a perfect season before losing their mojo in the playoffs and falling short

Wine - good or bad DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am thoroughly confused. Several months ago, I read of the benefit of wine for women. The conclusion was that it reduced a woman’s chances of heart attack and stroke by 30 percent. My husband and I have started to drink one glass of wine a day. Now comes a new report that says just one glass of wine a day increases the chances for breast cancer. Should I be concerned? -- M.T.
ANSWER: Welcome to the army of nutrition confusion. What’s good one day might be lifethreatening the next. I don’t rely on one report. I stick
to what the majority says. If the majority changes its mind, then I change. Wine and other alcoholic drinks lower the incidence of heart disease and, apparently, strokes. That’s the current majority thinking. Moderate drinkers of alcohol -- wine in particular -- have a lower overall mortality rate than do alcohol abstainers and heavy drinkers. “Moderate” drinking is one glass of wine, one 12-ounce can of beer or 1.5 ounces of
whiskey for women; it’s two for men. The role of wine (or alcohol) in promoting breast cancer is less clear. Analysis of 40 studies shows an increase in breast cancer for women downing three or more drinks a day. The same studies suggest that even one or two daily drinks might pose a slight danger. Other studies show an increase in lobular breast cancer with one drink a day, but no increase in ductal
breast cancer. Ductal cancer is the most common kind of breast cancer. I am positive that equally confusing information will be forthcoming. The best advice I have read is this: If a woman truly savors drinking wine, one glass a day is relatively safe in regard to breast cancer. The benefits of heart health and prevention of stroke are not so great that they should induce anyone to change from being a nondrinker to a drinker. When the Holidays Won’t Light Up Q: I bought three strings of exterior holiday lights last year to decorate the trees in my backyard. This year, although I put them up the same way, half the bulbs on one string won’t light. What’s going on? -- Carol in Cocoa, Fla. A: The problem is likely as simple as a single burned-
out light bulb halfway down the string. Turn on the lights as you normally do and locate the first bulb on the string that will not light up. Mark that bulb with a small bit of masking tape so you can find it again, and then unplug the string. Go to the box where you stored your holiday lights
and look for a container or a small plastic bag that contains replacement bulbs and fuses. Return to your string, locate the burned-out bulb, remove it by pulling it firmly straight out of the socket, and put a replacement bulb in its place. (The new bulb must be the same size and type as the old one.) Plug the string back
in and turn on. If the bulb was the culprit, the entire string will relight. If that method doesn’t work, you may have a fuse issue. Fuses are located in each of the plugs. If your strings are attached end-toend and the failure occurs at one of these attachment points, try removing the old

fuse from the attached end and putting in a replacement fuse (be sure to unplug the entire string before doing this, just to be safe). Fuse faults can occur when too many strings are attached end-to-end, overloading the circuit. Read the package instructions to find out the maximum number of light strings that can be attached to each other (three strings is a good limit). HOME TIP: Avoid us-

In a blender container, combine undrained pineapple and sugar substitute. Cover and process on BLEND for 30 seconds or until mixture is smooth. 2.
