Torquay Credit Union to merge with Radius entities in the area,” added Favreau, noting they will have greater access to specialized expertise. A membership meeting was held earlier in November, where information regarding the potential merger was laid out for the Torquay members. “Our members need to give us a mandate, and at 99 per cent and 100 per cent at Radius, we definitely have a clear mandate to go forward with it,” Favreau said. “We were being very open with the (members) so they could ask anything they needed up until the vote date.” She said there is still a lot of work to be done between now and March 31. Aside from branding, the biggest change will be hooking up a common technology platform so everything is synchronized with the Radius system. There will be no staff changes and the branch location will remain in Torquay, but members will have five more locations in the Radius network where they can do

business. “The members will see a lot more products and a lot more options available to them. The economies of scale are going to be coming in the back end, and we struggle to keep up with the needs, so staff will be used more efficiently,” Favreau said, noting there will be no job loss of the current staff of 13. “All staff will still remain in the same branch they work in, but duties might shift just a little bit.” Other credit unions in the area have merged recently, like Midale, which merged with Conexus early this year, but Favreau said the merging of rural credit unions isn’t necessarily something that is a natural fit for every one. It’s something that must be looked at carefully on an individual basis. “There are some that may be able to stay autonomous, depending on the member needs. Our members were needing more complex products and services and higher lending limits. We just couldn’t give

that to them on our own. As we see the small family farms growing larger and larger, they need more borrowing ability, same as the commercial areas and even in the consumer area with the size of mortgages compared to what they were 10 years ago,” said the CEO. In a press release, Steven Berg, president of the Torquay board of directors, said, “This merger is a positive move forward for our membership. Both organizations are similar in their cultures and their vision and are committed to their membership and their rural communities. We look forward to our future together.” “Member focus was the reason that we did this, and it’s still the reason we’re doing it,” added Favreau. “We’ve done things with Radius for many years now, shared on projects and shared on resources. They’ve always been a very good neighbour, and now they’ll be a little bit more.”

The Torquay Credit Union is now in the midst of merging with Radius Credit Union, effective March 31, 2014. In a meeting on Dec. 4, members of the small credit union voted 99 per cent in favour of the proposed merger. The following day, members of Radius Credit Union, which has offices in Radville, Avonlea, Ceylon, Pangman, Ogema and Tribune voted 100 per cent in favour of bringing Torquay under the Radius banner. Ann Favreau, Torquay Credit Union CEO, said the decision to move forward with the merger was because of the many positives it would provide to its members. “It’s something we’ve thought of for the last few years, and last year, during our planning session, we decided to take a closer look at our options,” said Favreau, who has worked at the credit union for 11 years. “Merging is in the best interest of our members, and we determined merging with Radius would better serve our members.” The Torquay Credit Union will bring its $60 million in assets into the Radius fold, increasing the group’s assets to $255 million, as well as adding roughly 1,150 members to bring the Radius client total to about 5,000 members. The merger, said Favreau, will allow them to better meet their member’s needs by providing relevant products and services, bringing in U.S. accounts, registered products, wealth management and commercial lending, as well as providing customers with higher lending limits. “It can really help the members that way. They can deal with the larger agricultural and commercial

Canada must inspire more than this If anybody was wondering how 150 years of Canada could be summarized into one clear and powerful image, they must have been sorely disappointed by the sesquicentennial options offered up last week. With Canada turning 150 in 2017, the government is getting an early start on preparing for the celebration. Five potential logos were presented to focus groups, but the options were embarrassingly uninspired and amateurish. The concepts probably should never have been designed past the cocktail napkin stage, and the test groups couldn’t even come to a consensus on which design was the least offensive. I don’t blame them for not selecting a clear frontrunner. There is no frontrunner among that bunch. If you haven’t seen the options, one was much too simplistic and old-fashioned without being retro, one was a childish and generic leaf below a halo of fireworks and another was a hilariously much too serious military shield. It’s not all bad, because there is still lots of time to find something the country can be proud of. They were all downright ugly, and I can’t imagine why given that there is so much about the Great White North that can inspire strong imagery. Our government has in the past com-

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers missioned some great design work. Just look to our money, which looks really good and has even won us an award in international money design. There is an award for that. There’s no reason we should settle for anything as poor as what has been presented here. Each logo worked around the maple leaf to some degree, which is fine. The maple leaf is a great starting point in the design of our identity, but after that there needs to be a big jump away from the most bland and trivial things that represent Canada, namely hockey and humility. We tend to consider ourselves humble folk, at least I do, but if we’re going to celebrate all things Canada — our history, our sense of progress and perseverance — there’s no time to hide timid behind a boring logo just so we don’t appear too showy. After 150 years, it’s time to get in everybody’s faces a little to say we’re great, we have things to

contribute to the world and we want everyone to know why Canada is important to the rest of the globe. We don’t need to be shy about it, but the logos that have been presented give the impression Canada is still an infantile presence on this planet, not to be taken seriously or paid any attention to. Maybe the designers see the country that way, and maybe the government does, too, but I can’t imagine that’s the case. Canada is vast and sprawling, a country full of ideas and a desire to change the world. If we want to represent 150 years of that passion we need an image that captures the minds and imaginations of the nation. We need something that gives a slight nod to the past with a focused eye on an optimistic future. Rather than a logo that looks to the bygone years as something we should attempt to once again attain, our 150th anniversary image should pay homage to those early years by showcasing Canada’s keen interest in forever moving forward. We blaze our own trail through this world as a nation that refuses to say no to progress. If that’s something we feel is important to celebrate, we need something to better represent it than what has been put forward.

Desire for lamb grows with changing population It was only a couple of weeks ago I noted in this space how Canadian agriculture should not get too focused on canola and wheat since there are trends moving forward that should make other aspects of the industry more attractive. One of the areas of growth I suggested we would see was in terms of domestic demand for lamb. It was interesting to hear a recent speaker at Canola Days, part of the Grain Millers Harvest Showdown in Yorkton, note that 55 per cent of Toronto’s current population were not born in Canada. That is a number you might have expected in the early 1800s, not two centuries later. But it shows Canada is again opening its doors to immigration, and thousands are taking the opportunity, just as most of our own forefathers did at some point over the last couple of hundred years. The current wave of immigration is no longer European, but comes from Asia, Africa and South America. It is ethnically both different and more diverse than the earlier wave. And with the diversity comes a much different palate in terms of food. Goat and lamb both move up the list in terms of favoured dining. Farmers in Canada have always raised sheep, although in terms of genetic devel-

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist opment the species has lagged well behind what has occurred in the beef, pork and poultry industries. The reasons are many, of course. Sheep production has always been very much a niche enterprise, and while niche markets by nature often mean higher margins, that is not generally the case with sheep. So limited numbers and values that are never substantially high have meant putting research dollars into something like genetic improvement is harder to attract. That is why a recent announcement in Regina has to be looked at as positive for the sheep sector. The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, joined Saskatchewan lamb producers to announce a $1.4 million federal investment to develop and implement a new meat grading system. “The computer indexing and grading protocol offers members of the newly-

formed Canadian Lamb Producers Cooperative (CLPC) with real-time access to data. Analysis of this information will ultimately lead to increased farm cash receipts through improved flock genetics, better feed management practices and reduced operating costs,” noted a government release. “This project assists Canada’s lamb industry in attracting the domestic market as well as increasing traceability, which is crucial for exporting Canadian lamb to international markets.” Having access to grading data is an integral step to understanding what genetics are superior in terms of carcass grade. The announcement is particularly positive for the west, since 40 per cent of Canada’s sheep flock is located in Western Canada; 30 per cent in Ontario; 25 per cent in Quebec and five per cent in Atlantic Canada. The release also noted exactly what I suggested in the earlier column, although growing demand is not just within Canada, adding “world-wide demand for lamb consistently outstrips supply.” With our changing ethnic mix in Canada, the demand for lamb will only grow, and it is positive to see our federal government making an investment in helping producers be in a better position to meet the opportunities as they arise.

Trial to begin in May for London mayor charged with fraud National LONDON, Ont. - The mayor of London, Ont., will be going to trial on fraud charges this spring. A date of May 26 has been set for the trial of Joe Fontana, who is accused of using taxpayers’ money to help pay for his son’s wedding reception in June 2005. He was charged by the RCMP last year with fraud under $5,000, uttering a forged document and breach of trust by a public official. Fontana was a Liberal MP at the time of the alleged fraud, which police have valued at $1,700. A judge from outside London will oversee the trial, which is expected to last three or four days. Fontana has denied any wrongdoing and refused to step down as mayor while the charges are before the courts and his lawyer has said he will plead not guilty to all three charges. Late last month, Fontana confirmed he would rather have a trial by judge than by jury. Both Fontana and his lawyer, Gord Cudmore, have said they are confident about the chances of a full acquittal. *** QUEBEC - Quebec’s revenue agency is seeking prison terms and a total of $750 million in fines from a preciousmetals company, 11 jewelry businesses and at least a dozen other individuals for alleged fraud. Revenu Quebec says 1,920 charges have been laid in all, including 120 against Kitco Metals Inc. and another

120 against company president Bart Kitner. Fines sought from them total more than $454 million. The agency alleges false statements were submitted in order to illegally obtain tax credits and reimbursements. Revenu Quebec is also targeting 13 administrators of the jewelry businesses and an accountant.< Kitco issued a statement on its website to deny the allegations. The company alleges Revenu Quebec has previously directed a witness to provide false testimony about Kitco in legal proceedings. ‘’Kitco Metals Inc. has never made false statements in a return nor attempted to obtain a rebate to which it is not entitled,’’ the statement said. The crimes are alleged to have taken place between March 2008 and August 2010. Revenu Quebec said Monday the alleged fraud centred on the processing of gold. ‘’This is a major investigation for Revenu Quebec and, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the biggest in our history,’’ said agency spokesman Stephane Dion. Kitco has already filed a $122-million suit against Revenu Quebec in Superior Court and says the damages will increase because of the agency’s announcement on Monday.

International OSLO - Recalling the “burning, blinding and suffocating” horrors of chemical weapons, the head of a watchdog trying to consign them to history accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on Tuesday. Ahmet Uzumcu, director-general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said such toxic tools of warfare have an “especially nefarious legacy,” from the trenches of World War I to the poison gas attacks in Syria this year. “You cannot see them. You cannot smell them. And they offer no warning for the unsuspecting,” Uzumcu said as he collected the $1.2 million award in Oslo on behalf of the group. “And we only need to look at the fate of the survivors of such attacks — people destined to spend the rest of their lives suffering unbearable physical and psychological pain — to understand why such weapons must be banned,” he added. The OPCW was formed to enforce a 1997 international convention outlawing chemical weapons. It worked largely out of the limelight until this year, when it received its most challenging mission to date: overseeing the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile. The Nobel Peace Prize was announced on Oct. 11, just days before Syria officially joined the OPCW as its 190th member state.

Gord Grace, the head of Canada’s delegation at the World University Games in Trentino, Italy, believes that although it is a competitive environment, the university games are also an opportunity for personal development. “I think it’s a combination of high performance and experience,” Grace said in a telephone interview on Sunday. “Certainly, we want them to be at their best, we want them to have an opportunity to compete against the best from countries from around the world at great venues, so I think that’s part of the development. “But it’s also a unique opportunity. It’d be such a waste if they didn’t take the time to really appreciate the beauty of Italy and the culture and the history and things like that. We’ve certainly been encouraging that with the athletes and their coaches. I think that’s the goal — a combination of those things.” The 26th Winter Universiade will see nearly 2,500 studentathletes from 61 countries compete against each other in 12 different sports spread across seven sites in the Trentino province in northern Italy. The Games end with a closing ceremony at the hockey arena in Alba-Canazei on Dec. 21. Canada is sending its largest-ever contingent to the Games, with 107 athletes and 42 coaches, trainers and other support staff. Competition began with hockey on Tuesday, but the opening ceremonies were held on Wednesday in the city of Trento. Brendan Bottcher, a curling standout from the University of Alberta, was Canada’s flag bearer at the opening festivities. *** TORONTO, Cananda - Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish has capped a stellar season by winning the 2013 Lou Marsh award. Cornish became just the third Canadian to win the CFL’s outstanding player award after rushing for a league-high 1,813 yards, breaking his own record for the most in a season by a Canadian. The 29-year-old native of New Westminster, B.C., also led the league with 2,157 yards from scrimmage and 14 TDs en route to being named the CFL’s top Canadian for a second

straight season. He’s the first Canadian to win the CFL’s top player award since Ottawa Rough Riders tight end Tony Gabriel in 1978 and the first CFL player to claim the Lou Marsh award since legendary Ottawa quarterback Russ Jackson in 1969. Cornish narrowly defeated Milos Raonic, the first Canadian men’s singles tennis player to achieve a top-10 world ranking, and Kaillie Humphries, who dominated the women’s bobsled circuit this season. Damian Warner, figure skater Patrick Chan and Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews were the other award finalists. Cornish was a finalist for last year’s award, won by women’s soccer star Christine Sinclair. The trophy is awarded annually to Canada’s top athlete as selected by representatives of Canada’s leading news organizations. It’s named after a former Toronto Star sports editor. International PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - When the Anaheim Ducks play the Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium, members of the Phoenix Coyotes ownership group will have an up-close view of the proceedings.

The Coyotes bought a suite for the Stadium Series game, which could serve as a test run for other warm-weather events, and the team would love to host one next season, president and CEO Anthony LeBlanc said. “It’s very attractive to us,” LeBlanc said. “We’re trying to grow the brand of the National Hockey League in Arizona, which is a non-traditional market. Anything we can do that will help us accelerate growing that brand we’re going to do.” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly mentioned Phoenix being prepared to host an outdoor game during an appearance on the Fan 590 in Toronto, and while LeBlanc was surprised to hear that he also confirmed the interest. “Our view is we presented to the league that we’d be very interested in hosting one,” LeBlanc said. “That’s as far as we’ve gone.” The plan would be to hold it around the Super Bowl, which is set for early February at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Chase Field, the home of MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks, would be the most logical place. That has a retractable roof, as does University of Phoenix Stadium, which is home to the NFL’s Cardinals.

Happy Holidays From

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The arts are a strong part of the Arian aspect, with music becoming more dominant. An important decision looms as a longtime relationship takes an unexpected turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Surrounding yourself with beautiful things helps restore the Taurean soul. Enjoy an art exhibit, for example. Or redecorate your personal space with something truly splendid. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Some colleagues might try to talk you out of what they insist is a risk, but which you consider an opportunity. As usual, follow your own good sense when making your decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A workplace change you might have worried about soon proves to be highly favorable for the clever Crab who is ready to take advantage of new opportunities opening up. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Congratulations. Your Leonine pride is polished to a dazzling new brilliance thanks to your success in winning support for your new project from even the most doubtful of detractors. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unsettling rumor about a colleague’s apparently regrettable behavior is soon proved groundless, allowing you to enjoy the upcoming end-of-year festivities in a happy mood. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your success in helping to create a harmonious environment out of a chaotic situation earns you the admiration of someone who could become an important new presence in your life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your Scorpion’s sense of loyalty could find you leading a passionate defense of a loved one you feel is being unfairly treated. The week’s end brings long-awaited family news. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your keen instincts are once more on high alert as you find yourself being pressured to make a quick decision about a certain matter. More facts come to light by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) An unexpected workplace development could disrupt some family plans. A full explanation, however, averts domestic discord. A financial matter continues to need attention. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Spend time away from distractions to reassess some recent moves that might not have worked out as you had hoped. What you learn could be invaluable for future decision-making. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A recent act of kindness is a reminder of how important your friends are to you. You might want to show your appreciation by hosting a special pre-New Year’s party just for them.
