Who Says You Can’t Please Everyone?

The managers of Creighton Lodge are looking to the future as they continue to raise funds in order to renovate the lounge.

2-12” Family Special

Creighton Lodge in full fundraising mode As one of the great success stories regarding cooperation among the southeast municipalities, the managers at Creighton Lodge continue to plan big things for the seniors’ living complex. The roof at Creighton Lodge has undergone some refurbishment following some question as to whether it would need to be completely replaced. Lodge manager Judy Pratt said they were relieved to find out there was a good 20 years remaining in the roof’s life expectancy, so the overhangs were removed to counter some water issues. The problem was that the drainage, which guided water off the roof was in the overhangs and water would melt and freeze, compromising the integrity of the overhangs as they filled with moisture. “They had to be removed,” said Pratt, noting the north and south sides of the building will no longer feature overhangs. The lodge also saw an upgrade and replacement of its fire system. Pratt noted the old system would set off alarms across the building if someone was burning toast. “That was just too much, so they’ll still get a little smoke detector in their room to tell them their toast is burning. If the fire alarm does ring, we know now that it’s serious,” said Pratt. She said people would get complacent when the alarms went off because there were so many false alarms. This system rings down to the Estevan Telephone Answering Service, which then calls the Estevan Fire Rescue Service. With regular maintenance always on the go, with another $45,000 to repair pillars in the foundation, the lodge is now focusing fundraising efforts on the expansion and renovation of the building’s main foyer and entertainment area. Creighton Lodge received a pair of donations last week, and as those contributions continue to trickle in,

they also started a lottery in the hopes of raising another $90,000. Participants may purchase a ticket for their chance to win one of three travel vouchers with winners drawn at an event in May. Last week Creighton Lodge received approval from Saskatchewan Lotteries. Pratt said the consortium of rural municipalities that own Creighton Lodge are now fully pushing for the renovation project and the fundraising required. “We’re back on track now for the fundraising for the lounge,” said Pratt. The renovated and expanded lounge is expected to cost in the $600,000 to $700,000 range and Pratt said they are about halfway to that goal. There are 1,000 tickets available in the lottery and prizes include travel vouchers of $5,000, $3,500 and $1,500. Pratt said they are planning a fundraising dinner on May 10 at Doug Third Hall, and that’s when the draws will be made. “We’ve never done this before, so we just thought, if we’re going to make these draws, we’d like to make it a big deal,” she said. Those looking to purchase a ticket in the lottery may call Creighton Lodge or contact any member of the Creighton Lodge trust committee, which is made up of representatives from each of the RMs with a stake in the lodge. The Creighton Lodge Resident Council received a $2,000 donation, which went toward their Christmas party on Dec. 2 allowing the residents and volunteers to mingle. That donation came from ARC Resources, which Pratt identified as a huge supporter of the lodge. “They’re very supportive of our residents. They’ve given so much money to the residents,” she said, noting the donations to the Resident Council are separate from donations made for the building project.

Helpful nature of Canadians vital to who we are I don’t really know my neighbours very well, but if they ever find themselves struggling, I want to help. Conservative MP James Moore made some bizarre comments regarding child poverty. Moore is the Minister of Industry, and suggested it isn’t job to feed his neighbour’s kids, implying the federal government has no role to play in poverty across the nation. When many of us see children in poverty, we see a tragedy, a person who doesn’t have the same opportunity and future that the rest of us have. It’s unfortunate that we have people in the highest offices of the country who see those same children and consider them lost causes who expressly do not deserve the same opportunity as everyone else. For people like Moore, it isn’t a village that is necessary to raise a child. When he says it isn’t his job to feed his neighbour’s kids, he is suggesting that children should grow up in isolation, to submit to whatever burden may have been placed on them by circumstances they may have been born into. His comments are the exact opposite of what I hope Canadians hold as a national value, namely, helping people who are struggling. It flies in the face of the sentiment that Canadians help and care for one another. Put very simply, Moore’s comment is unCanadian. We help one another. We realize that

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers nobody is an island, everybody is part of the community and community is family. I want to help. I want everyone to have the opportunities that I had and do have. As someone who grew up in a lower-middleclass environment, I would hope everyone has at least what I had growing up, access to food and opportunities for extra-curricular activities and time to express myself. When we hear our American brothers and sisters talk public health care, most of us scoff at the arguments against such a system. It’s ridiculous to hear people say that if their neighbour gets sick they don’t deserve some sort of safety net or access to treatment unless they alone can pay for it. If my neighbour gets sick, I’m happy to contribute to a system that will provide treatment. The same goes for hungry kids. No, we don’t need the federal government to run breakfast programs in schools across the country, and in that way, Moore is right. Some schools do benefit from breakfast

programs, and those can be run at the local level, like the one at Hillcrest School in Estevan. But I hope Moore would rather contribute to one in his neighbourhood than gleefully flip a middle finger to his neighbour’s hungry kids. Of course, this goes far beyond the organization and implementation of local breakfast programs, and that’s where the federal government does have a role to play, so I hope Moore is up to the task. It’s his job to advocate for the poor and ensure there are avenues for people to prosper even if they experience times of little means. As Canadians, we have a real interest in the welfare of everyone in the country because nobody benefits when people suffer. The federal government definitely has a role to play when it comes to poverty. We take great value in supporting one another. That’s one of those great things that make us Canadians. We’re helpful people. It’s what connects us. It’s what keeps us from fearing our neighbours, and it keeps our doors open to those in need. It’s what keeps us smiling at strangers we pass on the street and exchanging a friendly hello. Caring for our neighbours is an intrinsic Canadian value, and if Moore can’t share that with his neighbours, maybe Canada isn’t the place for him.

Be wary of far reaching Agricultural Growth Act An omnibus bill is moving through Parliament right now dealing with agriculture. The Agricultural Growth Act, when passed, which is all but inevitable in a majority government situation, is going to change things for Canadian farmers. Just how much and whether those changes will be good or bad for farmers is a matter of much conjecture. The AGA is being called an omnibus bill for agriculture because it proposes amendments to a number of acts dealing with plant breeders’ rights, feed, seed, fertilizer, animal health, plant protection, monetary penalties, ag marketing programs and farm debt mediation. Regular readers will know of course that I am generally leery of things undertaken by Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. From the first step into Parliament by Ritz and Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the government has had a political agenda around agriculture and has forged ahead often with questionable tactics being employed. It is difficult not to applaud the determination of Ritz and company in the sense that they have a vision and are dedicated to implementing that vision for farming by any means possible. But having a vision does not ensure the vision is a good one. And you should at least be willing to give people a look at exactly what changes you want to make so some analysis of the impact of those changes can be undertaken.

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist One of the problems of so-called omnibus legislation is the sheer scope of what is being dealt with in the act. The more broadly based proposed changes are, and in this case they cross through a number of areas dealing with regulatory issues and industry standards, the more difficult even basic understanding is. It is difficult to offer constructive criticism, or even reasonable support when there are so many possible outcomes associated with such a broad-stroke piece of legislation. Couple that with the tendency of this government to push through legislation limiting debate in the process, and farmers are likely to face dramatic changes they were not even fully aware were in the act. “This legislation will fundamentally restructure agriculture in ways that will profoundly affect farmers, their rural communities and the food system they supply. Its effects will reach far beyond agriculture,” stated Jan Slomp, NFU national president in a release. “Amending the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act to align with the requirements of UPOV ’91 (the International Union for the Protection of

New Varieties of Plants) instead of UPOV ’78 will devastate farmers’ ability to save, sell and reuse seed. At the same time, greater corporate control over every aspect related to seed will mean farmers pay much higher seed prices.” I appreciate the NFU is about as politically opposite the Conservatives as you can get, and that as an organization it too has an agenda it is unwavering from, so their position must be taken with a grain of salt. But their question is one that should at least be acknowledged and answered as the act progresses. And there are no doubt a long list of other concerns from farmers, many not tied to an agenda quite as much as the NFU. For such an important act as this one is, Ritz and company should be eager for feedback, since farmers often understand what is reasonable for them far better than politicians and their Ottawa-bound staff. To not have a long, public debate about this act begs the question what does the government not want the eye of public review to see? That may only be a perception of the situation, but perception often ends up being reality, and we should expect better of government. If the changes have the merit Ritz believes, let him tell the details, answer concerns and move forward with legislation made better by the effort of open dialogue with those about to be affected by the changes.

Incarcerated mothers may serve time with babies National VANCOUVER - A new study suggests federal and provincial inmates are more likely to be infected with HIV because of the lack of adequate treatment in facilities where syringes are shared. Researchers at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/ AIDS say authorities need to urgently improve HIV treatment and promote programs such as needle exchanges. The study conducted between May 1996 and March 2012 involves interviews every six months with 657 inmates who were HIV positive and used injection drugs. Lead author Dr. M-J Milloy says the study found that HIV could be detected in a prisoner’s bloodstream at a much higher rate — meaning they’re more likely to pass on the infection. But when those same people were not behind bars, the study found the infection rate fell to 62 per cent because they received treatment. Milloy says that although some inmates chose not to disclose they were HIV positive to prevent being stigmatized, others could not access specific medications they’d started before they were incarcerated or experienced delays in getting their prescriptions filled. *** VANCOUVER - British Columbia’s government violated the rights of incarcerated mothers when it can-

International JOHANNESBURG - The bogus sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s memorial says he has interpreted for years at big events for the South African government and the ruling party. Thamsanqa Jantjie told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he has records to prove that he worked at official events in the past. He also said he was undergoing a medical examination Tuesday at a psychiatric hospital west of Johannesburg. The hospital says it cannot divulge information about patients. A cousin and three friends of Jantjie say he was part of a mob that accosted two men found with a stolen television and burned them to death by setting fire to tires placed around their necks in 2003. Jantjie has said he has schizophrenia and hallucinated during the Dec. 10 memorial for Mandela.

celled a program allowing inmates to serve time with their babies, a B.C. Supreme Court judge has ruled. The lawsuit was launched in 2008 by two former inmates of the Alouette Correctional Centre for Women in Maple Ridge, B.C., after a prison official cancelled the program because infants were not within the mandate of the correctional service. Justice Carol Ross ruled Monday the decision violated the mothers’ equality rights and security of person and liberty, contrary to the principles of fundamental justice under the charter of rights. “The decision to cancel the Mother Baby Program removed one important option, the one presumed at law to be favourable, from the process of determining the best interests of the child,” said Ross. “As a result infants have been and will be separated from their mothers during the critical formative period of their life, interfering with their attachment to their mother, and depriving them of the physical and psychological benefits of breastfeeding.” Mothers, too, will continue to suffer from being separated from their infants, Ross added, concluding the decision to cancel the program was “arbitrary, overbroad and grossly disproportionate.”

Dineen named Olympic women’s hockey coach National CALGARY - With less than two months to go until the Sochi Olympics, Kevin Dineen will have to hit the ground running as the new head coach of the Canadian women’s hockey team. Dineen was named to the post Tuesday, just a few days after Dan Church’s surprise resignation. Dineen was signed for the remainder of the season and will guide the defending champions at the Feb. 7-23 Winter Games. “This has been a whirlwind few days but when this opportunity presented itself I immediately jumped at it,” Dineen said at a news conference. It’s the first international coaching job for Dineen, who served as head coach of the NHL’s Florida Panthers for parts of three seasons until he was fired last month. He previously served as head coach of the AHL’s Portland Pirates for six seasons (2005-11). “We’re very excited that Kevin will join the coaching staff of Canada’s national women’s team and bring his unique perspective to the dressing room,” Hockey Canada chief operating officer Scott Smith

said in a statement. “Kevin has had success in both the AHL and NHL, and we’re looking forward to him being a part of the staff for the final push towards Sochi.” Dineen, a 50-year-old who was born in Quebec City and raised in Toronto, also played in 1,188 NHL regular-season games, scoring 355 goals and adding 405 assists. He succeeds Church, who unexpectedly stepped down last week. Church said he felt there was a lack of confidence in his ability to coach Canada to a gold medal at the Games. *** TORONTO - A good day for the Ottawa Redblacks and the CFL, but a painful one for the other eight teams. “There’s no doubt,” Toronto Argonaut GM Jim Barker said after Monday’s expansion draft. “Everybody in the league lost players they didn’t necessarily want to lose. “It’s not a fun deal. You spend time and you develop (talent) but for the league it’s a great exciting time. And I thought (GM) Marcel (Desjardins) and (coach) Rick (Campbell) and those guys did a fan-

Don’t Cuss! Call uS!

tastic job in piecing together their picks.” The Argos lost Canadian offensive lineman Joe Eppele and linebacker Jason Pottinger and import defensive end Jonathan Williams to the Redblacks. Barker tried to prepare his squad for the coming changes. “I sent all the players a letter over the weekend. Our team we knew was never going to be the same, but this (draft) is different. It doesn’t happen very often.” The Argos lost an offensive line starter in Eppele and a former starter and important special teams contributor in Pottinger. Williams, described by Barker as an up-and-comer, saw action on and off as a backup. International PERTH, Australia - Michael Clarke’s Australians regained the Ashes just four months after the last series defeat in England by completing a third comprehensive test victory on home soil. Resuming at 251-5 on the last day of the third test, England lost only one wicket in Tuesday’s morning session but

Nathan Lyon’s dismissal of Ben Stokes for 120 soon after lunch triggered the tailend collapse and England was all out for 353, giving Australia a 150-run win. Fittingly it was Mitchell Johnson, the man-of-the-match in the first two wins in Brisbane and Adelaide, who took the last wicket to secure an unbeatable lead in the five-match series. “What an amazing performance,” Clarke said. “We got ‘em back, so it’s a fantastic feeling.” Johnson finished with 4-78 and Lyon returned 3-70, the pair wrapping up the five wickets Australia needed on the last day and ending England’s three-series hold on the old urn. “We went through what England’s going through now not long ago in the UK,” Clarke said. “We had a tough time of it in the UK and copped a lot of criticism, but we also had a lot of support. For those people who have stuck by us, thank you!” England captain Alistain Cook, who like Clarke was playing his 100th test, had to concede Australia was a superior team following wins by 318, 218 and 150 runs.
