Cheers to the city for clearing the back alleys after Monday’s storm. They said they would keep them clear even after garbage collection moved to the front, but I doubted them. Thank you.

The athletics field in the Woodlawn Regional Park is still waiting to complete some finishing touches. Most important are the lights that provide an opportunity for teams and groups to use the field after the sun sets. (File photo)
Woodlawn continues on push to complete athletic field The Woodlawn athletics field got a little closer to completion with a donation last week that will help raise the lights, turning the field into an evening arena. Woodlawn Regional Park manager Nathan Puffalt said it’s an exciting time for the park as they enter the final push to complete all the work and restore all the Woodlawn facilities for public consumption. Puffalt is expecting to have all work complete in time for activities to begin late in the spring or early summer. There are still a few minor touch ups and accents to complete, with the installation of one of the finer points still on the table: that being the lights. “The major projects that we still want to do down at the athletic park is the lighting, a few touch ups to the fencing around there as well as eventually putting in a family playground area near that facility,” said Puffalt, who noted the play area is low on the priority list. Having the lights over the field comes before any further amenities are to be installed. “All the shaping and the grass is done and it’s taking beautifully,” Puffalt said regarding the sod that was placed on the field earlier this year. “The football guys got on there and said it was the best it has ever been. The buildings as well we finished off over the year, the concessions and dressing rooms and showers, they’re all 100 per cent ready to go.” Last week, RBC Dominion Securities donated $10,000 to the athletic field, and Puffalt said those funds will go toward installing cement caps on the pilings. “With this $10,000, it gets us started with putting the cement caps on the piles that are already there,” he said, noting installation of all the caps is estimated to be about $25,000. He said with other donations, it’s enough to get the contractor in to complete the work.

The next steps will include preparation work for the raising of the standards and installation of the lights around the field, as well as electrical work. That part of the project will cost between $20,000 and $30,000. “We still have a bit of fundraising to do to make sure we can get those lights up by the spring,” said Puffalt, who added the goal is to have the lights up and ready to be played under when soccer starts in 2014. He added that donations like the one from RBC Dominion Securities are vital in order to ensure all the facilities in Woodlawn Park are up and running and available for use by everyone in the southeast region. With the 2016 Summer Games recently awarded to Estevan, those facilities will play a big role in years ahead. Other facilities must be repaired or replaced leading up to the Games. A track will need to be completed at the Estevan Comprehensive School in order to run some of the events, and it will also require some fundraising from the community to build, about $300,000 in donations in order to begin construction. Puffalt said the Woodlawn field is meant for use by the entire community, not just the soccer and football leagues, and he hopes everyone in the region can claim the field as their own. “Even when you go and watch a game underneath the lights, you can’t beat it. You feel the atmosphere change instantly. Kids get excited about it, and parents get excited about seeing their kids play underneath the lights. That’s what it’s all about, giving kids the opportunity to feel like they’re in the big leagues.” Puffalt called the Woodlawn field one of the most up-to-date and premier facilities in the province. He noted there are still lots of avenues for people who wish to donate, noting the field’s naming rights are still available.

Though technological progress is designed to make life easier for everybody, social networks seem only to further complicate our complex social interactions. Things may get a whole lot easier, because our online lives are still a pretty new thing for us. Our online personas didn’t enter the world in a drizzle of rain but burst onto the scene in a flash flood. We’re still picking up the pieces to see what will stick and how we want to manoeuvre through the digital world. Privacy is a big deal, and though we’re all becoming more complacent as we become more public to people in all corners of the globe, we still don’t like our online selves being peeped at. Sure, anybody who thought there was any remote semblance of web anonymity was fooling themselves, but we all have very direct control over what we put online, even if we don’t have control over who sees it and how that content can be twisted or manipulated by others once it’s out there. We all still have control over our digital selves. These social networks allow us to present the best of ourselves, for better or worse. We’re generally nicer, smarter and more attractive online, because we can weed out some of our daily stupidity and less flattering images and can make a case for person of the year. It’s kids who don’t have control over their online identities. None of us have
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers ever had to experience it before, so we don’t know exactly what the infants of today will think 10 or 20 years from now about what their parents posted about them online. Some people are downright terrified of exposing their kids to a digital world that can be incredibly harsh and judgmental, while others show their kids off with surprisingly oblivious vigor. There is some concern I’ve read that kids don’t have any choice over the matter. If their parents post a cute-at-the-time but potentially embarrassing video or photo of their child, the only one who gets hurt is the kid. But parents have been making decisions for their kids since people ever started having kids, so this shouldn’t really be as shocking as some of the more paranoid Internet parents believe it is. Like everything, there is a happy balance. It’s no good to live in fear of what’s going to happen to those images of your baby after you hit that post button, but people should be educated as to how things work online, the first rule of which is, there
aren’t really any rules. The Internet, which our social networks so delicately occupy, is the Wild West. There’s no reason to be afraid of navigating the web as long as you understand some very basic things, like understanding that everything you present can be accessed at any time by anybody for any purpose. There is as much privacy online as we want to have. It shouldn’t be expected that only those who we want to view our content will be able to consume it. There’s nothing wrong with posting content involving your unaware children, as long as you’re comfortable with everyone seeing it, from your mom to some random person on the other side of the world who you have never met. We need to understand that if there is something that should be kept private, it shouldn’t be posted online in any space. There is no such thing as privacy, no matter what sort of privacy settings are in place for your protection. If people’s lives are documented online from the time they are born, their life story will be available for everyone, from the government to potential employers. If something is to be kept private, it has no business being posted online. Sometimes we just need to take five seconds to think about what we’re doing before sharing with the world.
Fertilizer necessary to feed growing world As a farm writer I am always eager to paw through the newest edition of Ag Advance magazine when it shows up in the mailbox. The magazine does a fine job of looking at some of the cutting-edge developments in agriculture, whether it be seeder technology, how to best forward market production or what might be coming down the pipe in terms of seed science. In the latest edition there was an article entitled ‘Alchemy of Agriculture.’ In general terms, the piece is really just about science and how it impacts farming. There is nothing startlingly new in that. Agriculture uses science every day. The creation of new crop protection products, nutrient cocktails and plant varieties are all based in science creating something new. What I did find intriguing in the article was a reference to a book entitled The Alchemy of Air by Thomas Hager. “Hager points out, two-thirds of the world’s food supply is dependent on nitrogen fertilizer. This integral product didn’t exist until two scientists, Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch, came up with a way to pressurize natural gas to turn
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist hydrogen into liquid nitrogen to make fertilizer – or as Hager describes it, ‘making bread out of air,’” related the article. “The Hager-Bosch process emerged 100 years ago, when experts came to believe that current agriculture could not sustain more than four billion people. They posed a challenge to the world’s top scientists to come up with a way to avoid mass starvation. In his book, Hager describes this as the most important scientific discovery ever made.” In terms of scientific discovery, I am hardly the person to be picking which is the most important one made on this planet through the decades. Science is so much about having access to a toolbox of things discovered and created earlier. The earlier discoveries may not seem significant on their own, but they are essential to the next
development. It is like having a tub of Legos. One small piece does not look particularly impressive, but creative people build amazing structures when they have access to enough pieces. That all said, in terms of agriculture’s ability to feed a world seemingly incapable of even having a discussion about putting brakes on population growth, the scientific discovery of a process to create nitrogen fertilizer has to be among the most important scientific discoveries to date. As much as some people balk at the use of fertilizers as unsustainable in the long run, there does not appear to be a viable alternative at present in the face of an ever-growing world population. Certainly food can be grown without fertilizer using organic practices. Farmers did it for years with acres left idle as summerfallow in order to naturally regenerate. But can the world afford idle acres with hungry mouths to feed? The simple answer is no. And so we need continuous cropping, and that requires fertilizer, and for that, we owe Fritz Haber and Carl Bosch much.

Potash Corp. cuts workforce by 18 per cent National SASKATOON - Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan is cutting its workforce by about 18 per cent, affecting about 1,045 people — mostly in Canada and the United States. The Saskatoon-based company says the decision is necessary because of soft demand for potash and phosphates, which are used to make fertilizer. PotashCorp says the biggest job cuts will be in its home province, where 440 people will be affected — about 42 per cent of the total affected by the downsizing. New Brunswick will also see 130 people affected while the rest will be outside Canada, including more than 435 in the United States. Florida will lose 350 jobs while another 85 people will be affected in North Carolina. There will another 40 jobs affected in other parts of the United States and in Trinidad. PotashCorp is Canada’s largest producer of potash, which is sold around the world to help farmers boost crop production. *** TORONTO - The notion that someone can be obese yet still healthy is a myth, say researchers, who found that obesity carries a higher risk of premature death compared to that of normal-weight people, regardless of cholesterol, blood pressure and bloodsugar readings. In an analysis of data pooled from several previous studies, researchers at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital found people who were obese but metabolically healthy had a significantly increased risk of having a heart attack or stroke and of dying prematurely. “Our research findings challenge the myth that there is such a thing as healthy obesity if people maintain normal-range readings of cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure,” said endocrinologist Dr. Ravi Retnakaran, co-author of the study in
this week’s Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers reviewed eight studies from the last decade, which included a total of more than 61,000 participants who were followed for a mean period of 11 years. The studies evaluated subjects’ metabolic status, including cholesterol levels, blood-sugar levels and blood pressure. Measurements also included waist circumference, as excess abdominal fat tissue can contribute to the development of diabetes, for example. The studies compared fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke, as well as other causes of death like cancer, across three weight categories — normal, overweight and obese. International KIEV, Ukraine - Ukraine’s parliament on Tuesday opened a high-tension session in which the opposition aims to put forward a vote of no-confidence in the government in the wake of both the president’s shelving an agreement with the European Union and police violence against demonstrators protesting that decision. Inside the parliament, opposition members shouted “shame” and “revolution” as pro-government lawmakers spoke, while opposition speakers drew boos and jeers. Outside the building, thousands of demonstrators gathered, calling for the government’s dismissal. “Shame to your president and shame to your government,” spat out Arseniy Yatsenyuk, a lawmaker with the Fatherland party, the largest opposition grouping. After members of the various factions speak, the parliament will consider whether to put an opposition-backed no-confidence motion to a vote. If it does come to a vote, it is unclear if the opposition has enough support to pass it. Several lawmakers from the governing party have defected. President Viktor Yanukovych’s recent decision to shelve the long-anticipated agreement to deepen economic and po-
litical ties with the EU and to seek closer co-operation with Russia instead brought thousands of protesters to the streets. After police brutally swept aside a protest gathering early Saturday, anger spiked and some 300,000 protesters came out on Sunday. The protests are the largest since the weeks of mass demonstrations in 2004, called the Orange Revolution, which also were directed against Yanukovych as the nominal winner of a fraud-plagued presidential election. Those protests forced a revote, which Yanukovych lost; he narrowly won the office in 2010, beating Orange Revolution icon Yulia Tymoshenko. *** CANBERRA, Australia - Australia’s first same-sex weddings can take place this weekend after the nation’s highest court decided to rule next week on the law allowing gay marriage in the national capital. The Australian Capital Territory government, which administers Canberra, passed legislation in October that allows same-sex couples to wed in ceremonies equivalent to those heterosexual couples are entitled to under federal law. The federal government immediately applied to the High Court to quash the
law. The court’s six judges heard the case Tuesday and announced that they would deliver their ruling on Dec. 12. The first weddings are scheduled to take place in Canberra on Saturday, the first opportunity under the legal conditions. The federal government’s lawyer Justin Gleeson told the court that having differing marriage laws in various Australian states and territories would create confusion. The ACT government argues its samesex marriage laws should stand because they govern couples outside the federal definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman. Ivan Hinton and Chris Teoh, who attended the court hearing, plan to marry on Saturday. Hinton said he knew of at least 12 other same-sex couples who planned to do the same. Hinton said he hoped that the court would not order an injunction to prevent any marriage before the legality of the legislation was settled. But when the hearing ended, the federal government did not apply for an injunction and the court issued no orders.

Cardinals don’t offer contract to Axford
National ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Cardinals chose not to offer a 2014 contract to Canadian reliever John Axford, making the former closer a free agent. Axford, from Simcoe, Ont., was a combined 7-7 with a 4.45 ERA for Milwaukee and St. Louis last season, but he was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA after the Cardinals acquired him in a late-August trade. He made six appearances in the post-season and allowed a run in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out nine. The 30-year-old Axford led the Brewers with 46 saves in 2011 but lost the closer role a year later. Teams had until midnight to offer 2014 contracts to unsigned players on their 40man rosters. *** TORONTO - The biggest challenge in coaching any national hockey team, says Brent Sutter, is forming an identity quickly. “What you’re about as a team, how you’re going to play, the accountability has to fall into it right off the bat,” Sutter said. “That always is the case when you’re bringing in players from across the nation to become one.” And so Sutter said the fact Hockey Canada has named its smallest roster ever — just 25 players — to its national junior selection camp is a “huge advantage.” It allows him to coach and instill that identity from the get-go, he said, rather than spend time evaluating players. “You can run proper practices, you can just get things implemented and get going more with your team,” said Sutter, head coach of Canada’s world junior team. “It’s a change, it’s certainly different than in the past where it’s been mid-30s or over, the amount of players that have been invited. But you know what? It’s good. It wouldn’t have been done this way if there wasn’t a real clear direction of path.” Minnesota Wild defenceman Mathew Dumba was the lone NHL player named Monday to a roster that Sutter called a “moving target.” He’s holding out hope that more NHL teams will release players before the deadline, such as Calgary
Flames centre Sean Monahan, who’s out with a fractured left foot. Countries must submit their rosters on Christmas Day, 12 hours before the tournament in Malmo, Sweden, begins. “(The Flames) will make the decision that’s right for their organization and for (Monahan). And if they feel its right for them to keep him, they’ll keep him, and if they feel it’s right for him to come to world juniors and have this experience for the first time, and go through this experience. . . almost every player who’s gone through this experience, it has enhanced or helped them at some point in their career,” Sutter said.
International SEATTLE - The Seattle Seahawks fans have set a new noise record for loudest outdoor sports stadium, taking back a mark they achieved earlier this season. An official from Guinness World Records recorded the crowd noise at 137.6 decibels during the Seahawks victory over the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. The record came during the second quarter of Seattle’s 34-7 victory and was announced on the Seahawks Twitter page. Seahawks fans had set a record of 136.6 in a win over San Francisco in September. The mark was topped by Kansas City fans in October with 137.5 decibels. To put that in perspective, a jet engine at 100 feet is about 140 decibels. *** SAO PAULO - Construction workers returned Monday to the stadium that will host the opening match of the World Cup, five days after an accident killed two workers and renewed questions about Brazil’s readiness to hold the soccer tournament. Small groups of stonemasons, metal workers and others trickled into the Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo, expressing determination to finish work ahead of the World Cup opener on June 12. “We are all Brazilians and Brazilians never quit. We’re going to get our work done and the first game of the World Cup will be held here,” said 26-year-old metalworker Americo Barbosa.

However, the Labor Ministry has frozen use of the site’s nine other cranes until Odebrecht shows adequate safety measures are in place. Ahead of the resumption of work, more than 100 workers gathered early Monday for a prayer honouring the two victims.

Students look to give during the holidays A group of students are determined that there will be gifts for those staying at the Warm Welcome shelter this Christmas. The initiative organized by students at Spruce Ridge school was inspired by a story one of the Grade 5 classes read earlier in the year, noted the class’s teacher Patricia Klein. A class discussion was struck regarding Estevan’s new shelter that provides a warm bed for those who wouldn’t have one during the winter months. The shelter program recently restarted for this winter, welcoming guests to come in from the cold on Dec. 1. Klein said the students were surprised to hear there were people in Estevan who couldn’t afford a place to stay. “We came up with the idea back in October after reading a story called Shelter Folk,” said Klein. The story chronicles a girl and her
family moving out of their apartment and into a homeless shelter because they could no longer afford their home. “Then we got discussing how Estevan has a shelter, and the kids were really surprised about that,” she added. The Warm Welcome shelter started last winter, running a few nights each week, but this year the program has been expanded to run each night to ensure nobody has to sleep outside on some of the cold Prairie nights. The students are excited about the opportunity to help out those in need and provide some goods and holiday cheer for people living in the city who are experiencing some difficulty during the winter months. “It’s giving them a chance to give back to the community because so many of them come from more affluent families,” said Klein. “We talked about how we all get so much at Christmas and there are
some people who don’t, who don’t even have homes to live in, which is a shame in Estevan. It’s such a well off area. So, they’re really excited about it.” Klein contacted organizers of the Warm Welcome program and learned what they need most are a selection of toiletries. The class is looking to prepare about 24 shoeboxes stuffed with goods to donate to the shelter. “What we’re going to do is also make Christmas cards for them and write jokes and cheery messages for them and put them in there. We’ll wrap them like presents and deliver them to the Salvation Army,” said Klein. The students have already begun bringing in shoeboxes to prepare for stuffing, and the week prior to Christmas, before the students retire for their holiday break, the gifts will be delivered to the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army’s Lieutenant Brian Bobolo is a spokesperson for the Warm Welcome program.

Artists on Display
The annual Estevan Adjudicated Art Show co-ordinated by the Estevan Arts Council, saw the works of five local artists selected by adjudicator Judy Swallow qualify for provincial consideration in the next stage of assessment. Works chosen at the provincial level are then included in a year-long, province-wide tour. A public viewing featuring all the art, artists, their families and friends was held at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum on Nov. 30.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2013
Our Past Dec. 4, 1982
Saturday was an ideal day to purchase a Christmas tree, and sales at the Kinsmen Christmas Tree lot at the corner of King Street and 13th Avenue were extremely brisk. Shawn Dillman and his six-year-old sister Marcie show off the three they helped mom select that will grace their front room this season. Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. If you have a photo you think readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Jordan Baker at jbaker@estvanmercury.ca.
