THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2012

Classified looking to reach new audience Canadian hip-hop artist Classified recently embarked on a cross-country tour opening for rock band Hedley, and the rapper from the East Coast is looking forward to the chance to bring his music to an audience that may not be that familiar with his songs. “It has been a couple months since I have done a full tour,” said Classified. “I’m excited to get back on

the road.” Classified and Hedley will roll through Estevan Feb. 18 when they play Spectra Place, and although the venue in Estevan will be one of the smaller ones on the tour, for Classified it is still going to be a good-sized audience. “The smaller venues on this tour are going to be a lot bigger than small venues on a typical tour for me,” he said.

Classified added that on past tours through Canada, he has played shows for crowds of 20 people. No matter what the size of the audience is though, Classified said the objective always stays the same. “I have been doing this (tours) for a long time and I am always trying to get my music out there,” he said. “It gets out there by word of mouth, and I am just trying to

You may start by playing in front of 10 people, but you build your way up.” Classified is by no means a newcomer to the music scene. He released his first album in 2001 and has been making music and releasing albums on a regular basis since then. He has released several albums since 2001, but only signed to a major record label on his latest album. In 2009, Classified received lots of attention

from the Canadian music industry when his singles Anybody, Listening and Oh, Canada were nominated for Junos. This tour will represent a great opportunity for Classified as he will be playing for crowds who are coming to see Hedley. “It’s all about making new fans,” he said. The Nova Scotian rapper isn’t sure what to expect from the audience on the tour as he said this will be the longest tour he has gone on with a rock band. However he does know what he has to offer to the crowds. “I like to put on a show,” said Classified. “I like getting the crowd involved and having a good time.”

Classified’s most recent album is 2011’s Handshakes and Middle Fingers, which was recently nominated for the 2012 Juno rap recording of the year. His latest single off the album is titled The Hangover featuring Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, and Kayo. Classified said he first met Cuddy at the Junos and they got together after that to record the song. Just before leaving for the tour, the two got together again to film a music video for the track.

In the past couple of weeks I’ve read a lot about Charles Dickens in the news, and that didn’t make sense to me. Did they find a long-lost manuscript? Was it proven that all his classic works were plagiarized? It was nothing so scandalous as the latter, and nothing so groundbreaking as the former. Dickens turns 200 this year, or he would have if his fortunes were a little different. The more I read about what Dickens had really done for the world of literature, the more I have become a little embarrassed by being so closeted. I have never read a Charles Dickens novel. Because I’m trying to increase my exposure to culture all the time, I’m determined to finally read a novel of his as my own way of celebrating 200 years of Dickens. There isn’t any other author who I’ve read nothing about while still feeling like I know most of his stories fairly well, which is bizarre when I think about it. I know all of his works based on interpretations by other people. Most of what I know about A Christmas Carol comes from the muppet movie, and I am 95 per cent sure there weren’t any muppets in Dickens’ original, though the jury might still be out on Tiny Tim. Again, I haven’t read it.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers

What’s good for the farm is good for all While agriculture still manages to maintain its own identity in the world of politics, increasingly farming is simply a different form of business. At one time every farm was family operated, and while most remain influenced by a single-family unit, the size and scale of farms have made many producers incorporate. They rely on hired staff, and a long list of off-farm expertise to operate. In that respect they are not a lot different from most small businesses in any community in this country, with the possible exception that large-scale farms now require a much larger financial investment than do many small businesses. When it comes to the Canadian Prairies of course, the relationship between farmers and small business is critical. It is well understood in small rural communities that business does better when farmers do better. The converse is also true. When the farm economy is impacted by low commodity prices, agricultural producers do not have the extra cash to spend in stores, and the ripple effect is pretty quickly felt. So while living on the Prairies makes most keenly aware of the relationship, it

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist is always good when that relationship gets some reinforcement. We see that in the most recent edition of SaskBusiness magazine, and its annual listing of the province’s most influential women. Juanita Polegi, executive director of the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce, was one of the women making the 11th annual edition of the list. One of the reasons Polegi made the list according to the magazine was her agricultural interests. “She has become a significant bridge between the business community in eastcentral Saskatchewan and one of its key commercial drivers - agriculture,” detailed the magazine article. “She has been a driving force behind development of Yorkton’s first Canola Expo and the Crop Interpretive Centre being developed in the region’s largest

city,” continued the article. That Polegi was recognized largely because she recognizes how agriculture and business are supportive of each other, and thereby each is important to the other is a positive for farming. It is important that the significance of agriculture is reinforced to business, to government and to the general public. We must remember more and more voters are not directly connected to the farm, so they must be continually reminded of the importance of farming to continue to accept taxpayer dollars going to support the sector. In Polegi’s case, she said she comes by her dedication to agriculture honestly, having been born and raised on a farm, attaining a degree in the field, and eventually marrying and residing on a farm in the Jedburgh area. “My passion has always been for agriculture. I’m a farm girl, born and raised,” she said. Polegi has lived farming all her life, but most Prairie people can no longer say that. So having her efforts recognized is a definite positive for farming, and that is good for business, and good for all of us.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2012

Just when you thought you understood Valentine’s Day How many of you celebrated everyone’s favourite “holiday” this week? Obviously I’m talking about Valentine’s Day, and if that name made you wrinkle your nose in disgust, you are not alone. The yearly celebration of love and romance and heart-shaped pizza has come and gone again, undoubtedly resulting in plenty of cash leaving hands and tons of single people enjoying truffles in front of a Channing Tatum film. And by “enjoying” I mean they wore sweat pants and maybe cried a bit and ate the entire box of chocolates. So awesome. Pressing on, many people, myself included, do not know how Valentine’s Day began. I always assumed that Hallmark was in a bit of a financial pinch and shuffled out some pink and red cards and told everyone that February 14 was the best day in the year to tell people you love them. But that is in fact not that case. According to the quick research I’ve done, Valentine’s Day actually began as a pagan celebration that honoured Juno, the

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me goddess of fertility. So, this means that Valentine’s Day began as a celebration of pregnancy. And the ability to get pregnant. Which is all well and good if you’re a person in an emotionally and financially stable position who’s ready for a baby, but I can’t imagine that pregnancy is on the mind of five-year-old students handing “I think you’re swell” cardboard cards to one another during their class’s party. Even at my advanced age, the idea of promoting pregnancy among young couples doesn’t seem like a great idea. Personally, I can’t really say that thinking about popping out a child in nine months while I’m still in school brings a smile to my face. With fertility in mind, I think is rather ironic since festivities are really promoted in high schools. Because high schools are in desperate need of increased fertility. But the similarities

to the way Valentine’s Day is celebrated at the Estevan Comprehensive School and how it was celebrated in ancient Rome is rather shocking. Consider: one of the traditions of the pagan festival was for boys to draw the names of potential female lovers from a jar, which resulted in many marriages down the road. At the Estevan Comprehensive School, the SRC puts out a survey to students that lets them know who they are compatible with among their classmates. It’s basically the same! Only the pagan tradition resulted in love and marriage, whereas the SRC tradition seems to bring about crowds of students making out on third balcony. Ah, love and AXE are in the air! Tonaya Marr would love to hear about your Valentine’s Day, and whether or not this column has given you a different perspective on the celebration. You can e-mail her at tonayamarr@ gmail.com or send her a tweet @TonayaMarr. You know you want to.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2012

I will not always love you, Whitney I watched the first couple of minutes of the Grammys. And then I turned the TV off and did something productive. I didn’t want to hear all the tributes to Whitney Houston, a self-confessed druggie who had died the day before. The show was full of tributes to her and her music, I understand. And she was indeed a powerful singer. When I was young, my mom had bought one of her early tapes. Since I didn’t have many tapes to listen to, I pretty much wore it out. I’m secure enough in my masculinity to say that. After her passing, and that of Michael Jackson not so

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile long ago, the question struck me - why are we yet again going to sanctify a druggie? I’m not the only person who feels this way. On Sun News Network’s Facebook page, I saw a photo of a line of U.S. flag-draped coffins. Under it, the caption read, “Whitney Who? When celebs get more credit than real heroes.”

Apparently it’s going viral. Why does our culture celebrate such people? We build them up for their talent, which then leads to drug use as an accepted and almost natural part of celebrity lifestyle. Then we wink and nod, accepting that’s just celebrity life. Keith Richards did drugs? So? Marilyn Mon-

roe? Really? Johnny Cash? No way. Just keep the hits a-comin’. When the downfall leaves them a shadow of their former selves, addled with addiction, and they go through rehab numerous times, we just tut-tut as we watch it on Entertainment Tonight. That’s news; didn’t you know? When they get turfed from one of the highest rated shows on television as a result of their increasingly wild behaviour and decide to go on a “Violent Torpedo of Truth” tour, we buy tickets. These are our society’s heroes. We dedicate entire television networks to follow their every movement. Millions of trees give up their lives to print tabloid magazines and newspapers about them. But they were such an

inspiration, you may say. They provided such joy for their fans. Surely many will weep crocodile tears, and there will be a run on stuffed bears and flowers at some makeshift outdoor memorial. Oh, to be a flower shop owner near where such a “tragedy” takes place. When your interview with Oprah focuses on your drug problems, that’s saying something. CBS reported that in 2009 Houston told Oprah, “I had so much money by that point I was like, pshht. I wasn’t thinking ... “I didn’t think. I wasn’t thinking. Remember we were flying all over the country in jets. Going to Paris for a day or two, yachts, going cruising in the Mediterranean.” By her later movies, she was doing drugs daily, she admitted. It’s amazing how two

elements in society seem to have such easy access to drugs - prison inmates and celebrities. The great equalizer between the highest and lowest echelons of our society is drugs. But the great difference is if you’re a druggie who dies on the inner city streets, society thinks you were worthless to begin with, but if you’re a druggie and famous, the world stops at your passing. For those who can make great achievements without drugs (very few in the entertainment world, apparently), they should be celebrated. But if you spent much of the last 20 years popping pills, smoking dope or sticking a needle in your arm, my heart doesn’t bleed for you. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. Are sports destined to become just gimmicks?

He She He She Said By: Jordan Barker

Gimmicky fringe sports have been cropping up in the last few years, with the latest appearing to be a mash-up of soccer and RCMP crowd control called Ultimate Tazer Ball. This is the future of spectator sports. We’re already seeing gimmicks thrown into the classic sports, so it’s just a matter of time before basketball players get a baggy full of banana peels and baseball takes a page out of the UTB playbook to allow tasering of the catcher during an impact play at home plate. The NHL has developed its own gimmicks. The shootout was long considered an inappropriate way to conclude a tie game. Outdoor games, all-star games and draft lotteries are all just ways to try to trick an audience to liking the sport more than they really do. Looking at new leagues like Ultimate Tazer Ball and the Lingerie Football League, which just completed its ninth Lingerie Bowl, you can’t help but think, sure those are good athletes. The LFL is in fact more about the sport than it is about sex, and UTB features men who just couldn’t make it as hockey or football players but still wanted to have “professional athlete” on their business cards. Both leagues feature good athletes, but both also suffer from the fact that they are just gimmicks, offering something besides the sport as the main spectacle. People probably don’t care who leads the league in scoring in the UTB. They just think it’s fun to watch some people get electrocuted professionally. The LFL is actually a legitimate enough sport, but surely more people are watching because it offers more eye candy than the NFL, which does its best to cut to the cheerleaders every chance they get. Those cutaways just aren’t going to beat athletic women in underwear tackling one another. The LFL is growing. The UTB is about to take off. The only way that traditional sports are going to be able to keep up is to get on the gimmicky bandwagon and continue evolve.

No, there will always be sports that are played for their intensity, competition and all-around awesomeness. There are too many fans who truly enjoy sports for the sport, not because of gimmicks, for sport to die out and be replaced by gimmicks. At the same time, gimmick-driven events like lingerie football will continue to exist because there exists a market for that kind of sport as well. And I’m not saying that gimmick sports are only for people who don’t like non-gimmick sports, but they definitely have the entertainment value that is lacking in professional sports. Consider women running around in their underwear playing football. Chances are that some of them are talented athletes who were hired because of their ability. But the fact that they’re smoking hot and in terrific shape is probably helping. And it’s probably helping draw attention to the gimmick-filled sport. But these gimmick sports won’t replace true athleticism in the eyes of real fans. Because these hard-core fans love their sports regardless of whether or not the players have teeth (hockey) or have nice bodies (football). Many of these fans are actually men who are completely comfortable watching other men in skin tight pants (football) chase one another around the field all day. And for many of them, if given the choice between watching their favourite team and a bunch of super models tripping over one another with a football, many of these fans will choose their team, and maybe record the lingerie football for later viewing. In conclusion, both gimmick-driven sports and traditional sports will continue to have a place in our lives. They are not necessarily competing against each other, since recording became an option, and appeal to different groups of people. So have no fear! Hard-core fans will continue to be able to watch teams like the Riders without having to worry about the linebackers wearing only their underwear and helmets.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2012

After Dark continues at the art gallery Estevan will play a role as a hotspot for upand-coming musical acts as more bookings are attached to the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum’s After Dark Concert series. Mike Dawson, formerly of Estevan and a part of the band Library Voices, has been tasked with bringing Saskatchewan’s young or up-and-coming musical acts to smaller venues throughout the province. Whiskey Manner is one of those acts.

Adam Ennis and Roberto Giannini play drums and guitar respectively, while also supplying vocals to the Regina-based band Whiskey Manner. The band, which is now a six piece, after a “falling out” with their fiddle and ukulele player, is performing at the second Estevan Art Gallery and Museum After Dark tonight. Whiskey Manner is a collaborative band made up of a group of musicians who have known one another

since high school. The band began as a side project for the members, who are each part of different rock bands, but has now become a little more than that for the band members, who vary from 22 to 25 years old. Playing live as a group twice last year, they are now scheduled to play three times in a twoweek span. “We are a folky type band that sounds like Saskatchewan, but we leave our plaid shirts and tight pants at

home,” said Ennis. “We’re not a pretty bunch, but we give a good show.” “We got the rock and roll going and wanted to soften things up,” Giannini noted. If they had song ideas that didn’t suit their rock bands, they didn’t want to scrap the song. Forming Whiskey Manner allowed them to explore a different side of their music. “We all come from rock bands. In those we play a certain type of music. It’s heavy, but the influence comes from music we enjoy, like hard rock, folk and blues,” added Ennis. They first played together on Dec. 4, 2010. Giannini said it’s a lot easier to write songs with the big group, because everyone will be working with their own bands and then come together with complete songs to present to the group. Ennis said they are in no rush to move the band in any particular direction and they are looking to present the music as a live sounding band. Dawson said there is no set format for the shows, adding that “they are very interactive and they’re very intimate performances. “Just having an atten-

tive audience to hear the music performed and not be background music at a bar legitimizes the experience,” added Dawson. “We tend to undervalue what is in your own backyard.” Despite that he said the Saskatchewan music community is “shockingly” large and one of the burgeoning artistic places in the country. He pointed to the five or six Juno nominations Saskatchewan artists received this year as point of pride for the Prairie music scene. “They’re working together to try to help each other. There are so many and they’re learning from each other’s experiences.” “We’d like to open some eyes and ears now,” Giannini said about their goals while performing a small-venue show through the Cultural Exchange. The program to get artists around to these communities is supported through Culture on the Go, which works with the Saskatchewan Arts Board. A big part of Dawson’s job is to find people passionate about the arts who will provide the venues for these acts. “I’m building a network of presenters like Amber

(Andersen) in Estevan, finding people committed to the arts and committed to their communities.” He said a lot of people in the arts world try to make quick moves to larger centres, so finding people who wish to bring artists into rural communities is rare but welcome. “The art gallery has fantastic acoustics andAmber is so dedicated to the arts,” added Dawson. The first show was organized in Gravelbourg, with the second held at the EAGM for After Dark. Opening for the band will be a solo acoustic performance by Estevan original Carl Johnson, lead vocalist for the Library Voices. Dawson said there are a lot Saskatchewan musicians who are looking to get outside of their own towns to perform, and this initiative can help make that happen. He said he remembers being a kid in Estevan interested in putting on concerts in galleries or somebody’s basement. “Now we can deliver it on a professional level so everyone feels very welcome,” he added. EAGM’s After Dark evening is tonight beginning at 8 o’clock at the gallery.

Saskatchewanderer reclaims best summer job title PROVINCIAL REGINA - The job that has been called best summer job in Saskatchewan is up for grabs again. The provincial government will be accepting applications for the Saskatchewanderer summer job starting on Feb. 10. The Ministry of Tourism will pay one post-secondary student to explore the province with a video camera and blog about it. Andrew Konoff, a University of Regina graduate, said doing the job last summer was a great learning experience. He says it helped him develop his skills in social media management. The only down side was that the summer job came with a lot of long hours and challenges. NATIONAL FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - A 16-year-old has been shot by police in northern Alberta after officers allege he attempted to flee when they were trying to stop a stolen vehicle.

RCMP say three plainclothes officers were trying to stop the 2008 Toyota Corolla at an intersection in Fort McMurray on Saturday afternoon. They say there were three youths in the vehicle at the time, and that the shots were fired when the vehicle was trying to escape. RCMP say one shot struck the 16-year-old, who they say was the driver. Police say the boy suffered serious injuries and was flown to a hospital in Edmonton. *** WINNIPEG - An investigation is underway to determine what caused a fire that police say killed four people in a trailer home north of Winnipeg. Fire crews rushed to the scene in Selkirk shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday. Police said the four who died were all males. Two of them, aged 42 and 39, lived in the home. An 18-year-old man from Selkirk who was the son of the 42-year-old, also perished,

along with another Selkirk resident who was 37. Police said a 19-yearold man from Selkirk who was visiting the home escaped with injuries which they said were not lifethreatening. *** MONTREAL - Canada’s increasingly influential ethnic-press industry will seek a financial boost from the upper levels of government to better its business and journalistic know-how. While minority-language publications remain anonymous to most Canadians, their combined readership is in the millions — more than the country’s largest daily newspapers. The ethnic press also wields clout inside the Prime Minister’s Office, where, more than ever, the industry is viewed as a coveted conduit to the multicultural vote. Canada’s ethnic newspapers and magazines — often one-person operations typed up in the homes

of recent immigrants — are now hoping to raise their game even higher. INTERNATIONAL CARACAS, Venezuela - Youthful state governor Henrique Capriles won Venezuela’s first-ever opposition presidential primary Sunday by a wide margin, emerging as the single candidate who will try to end President Hugo Chavez’s 13 years in power. Capriles, the 39-yearold governor of Miranda state, faces a tough task in ousting Chavez, a charismatic campaigner with a loyal following and the full powers of the state to back his candidacy in Oct. 7 elections. Opposition election chief Teresa Albanes announced the preliminary results, saying that Capriles won about 62 per cent of the vote, beating Zulia state Gov. Pablo Perez by a margin of more than 30 percentage points. Chavez’s opponents lined up to vote in many

areas, surpassing most expectations with a turnout of about 2.9 million ballots cast out of Venezuela’s 18 million registered voters. *** KUWAIT CITY - The head of Kuwait’s central bank of more than 25 years has resigned, state media said Monday, in the latest shake-up among the Gulf nation’s veteran policymakers as political tensions grow. The official Kuwait News Agency said Sheik Salem Abdulaziz Al Sabah, a member of the Gulf nation’s ruling family, has stepped down after serving as Central Bank governor since 1986. The one-sentence announcement gave no immediate reason for his resignation. But the governmentbacked Al Qabas newspaper said Sheik Salem had raised objections to Kuwait’s rising public spending, including substantial wage increases for oil workers and others. Labor groups staged a se-

ries of strikes in October demanding pay hikes in the oil-rich nation. *** MANILA, Philippines - The World Health Organization has warned that the battle against the age-old scourge of leprosy is far from over. It says 5,000 new cases are reported yearly in the Western Pacific, where the disease was declared eliminated in 1991. WHO regional director Shin Young-soo says the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Kiribati are three of 37 countries in the region that have failed to meet the target of lowering cases to less than one per 10,000 people — the health body’s definition of leprosy elimination. He cited the example of the Philippines, which was declared largely free of leprosy in 1998 yet some 2,000 new cases are still being recorded yearly. He told reporters Monday that China has around the same number of new cases each year.

Coalers sweep Imperials in first round The Bienfait Coalers wrapped up a sweep of the Lampman Imperials on Tuesday night with a 12-2 win in Game 3 of the series in Bienfait. The first-place Coalers had hammered the Imperials 10-1 last Tuesday in Lampman and followed that up with a 9-1 victory Sunday in Bienfait. Meanwhile, entering Wednesday’s action, the Midale Mustangs and Carlyle Cougars were tied 1-1 in their best-of-five series, which began on Friday. Fifth-place Carlyle won that game 5-2 in Mi-

dale, with the fourth-place Mustangs bouncing back for a 4-2 win the next night in Carlyle. The seventh-seeded Oxbow Huskies are on the verge of a major upset in their series against the second-place Arcola-Kisbey Combines. After a 2-1 win on Feb. 7, the Huskies won the second game 7-6 in double overtime on Monday and are now one win away from a second-round matchup against the Coalers. As of Wednesday, the Wawota Flyers and Redvers Rockets were tied 1-1 in their series. Sixth-place

Redvers won 4-3 last Tuesday in Wawota, with the Flyers returning the favour on Thursday with a 6-4 win in Redvers. In provincial action, Oxbow was eliminated from the B bracket on the weekend. They lost 7-2 in Moosomin on Friday, then hosted the Rangers the next night and lost 3-2. Elsewhere, Carlyle got past Indian Head in their C quarter-final series. Indian Head won the second game 6-4 at home on Wednesday, but the Cougars won the series 11-7 on aggregate. Redvers was knocked

out of the C provincials on Monday with a 5-2 loss to Bethune in Game 2 of their quarter-final. They had lost Game 1 6-4 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Arcola lost 3-2 to Nokomis in the first game of their best-of-three A semi on Saturday in Arcola. Game 2 is tomorrow in Nokomis, with the deciding game, if necessary, Sunday in Arcola. Two more semifinal series get started this weekend. Bienfait is in Balcarres on Saturday for the opener in their A semi, and Midale heads to Shaunavon to kick off their B semi.

Tavares still on road to super stardom Bruce Penton Sports Columnist You're John Tavares and you're an eight-year-old hockey phenom in Ontario. You're playing above your age group and still dominating. You're John Tavares and now you're 14 and people in your camp successfully petition the Ontario Hockey League to waive its age rules and allow you to be eligible for selection in the priority draft under an "exceptional talent" clause. You're John Tavares and things go perfectly according to plan, dominating the OHL, scoring 45 goals as a 15-year-old and going on to break Peter Lee's career OHL record with 215 over four seasons. You're John Tavares and after a decade of hype about being one of the best Canadian hockey talents to come along since Gretzky, Lemieux and Crosby, you're

the No. 1 pick in the NHL and sign with the New York Islanders. You're John Tavares, a regular with the Islanders and in your first two seasons ... well, you may as well be in the witness protection program. Has John Tavares fallen off the face of Earth? Is he still playing hockey? Of course he is. This is his third year in the NHL and it's easy to get lost or ignored while playing for the Islanders, who are No. 3 in the Greater New York area and among the league's bottom feeders for the past 20 years or so. The Islanders' last playoff series victory was in 1992-93. They've missed the playoffs 17 times in the previous 22 years. Despite 24 and 29 goals in his first two seasons, Tavares's hockey profile has faded - so much so that when an ESPN writer recently featured "the top 25 NHL players under the age of 25," the name of John Tavares was nowhere to be found. Which is ridiculous,

Winter Clearance OFF

Winter Fashion

of course. Tavares has been around the top 10 scorers in the league all year and is on pace for a 34-goal, 83-point season. Pretty nice numbers. At the age of 21, he's the fifthhighest scorer among those 25 and under in the NHL. But Patrik Berglund, Bryan Little and Sergei Kostitsyn are better than Tavares, according to the so-called sage from ESPN, who should perhaps stick to football or basketball analysis and leave hockey to people who know - such as almost any Canadian, for instance. As a matter of fact, you

are John Tavares and you are on the cusp of becoming an NHL superstar. But then again, we've known that since you were eight years old. • Norman Chad of the Washington Post, on three stars of the New England Patriots: "The quarterback (Tom Brady) is married to a supermodel. The wide receiver (Wes Welker) is engaged to a former Miss Hooters International. The tight end (Rob Gronkowski) hangs out with an adult film star. I guess that's why they're called "skill positions." • Comedy writer Jerry

Perisho: "The Super Bowl champion New York Giants enjoyed a ticker tape parade down Broadway in New York City. A terrible traffic jam occurred when Eli Manning's helmet couldn't make it between buildings." • Perisho again: "Former NFL rushing champ Ricky Williams says he is retiring. In other words, they asked him to pee in a cup again." • Comedy writer Jim Barach: "Michael Vick was named the most disliked athlete by fans, with Tiger Woods coming in second. It makes a big difference if you

were harmful to dogs, or just ended up in the doghouse." • Mike Bianchi, Orlando Sentinel: "I'm not saying Madonna is getting old, but she appears to have had so much work done on her face that she should have opened up the Super Bowl Halftime Show with 'Like a Surgeon.'" • Headline at TheOnion. com: "Landon Donovan inks $2-per-goal deal with grandparents." • Blogger Bill Littlejohn: "The most valuable athletes in North America Peyton Manning and Sidney Crosby, neck and neck."

Canadian-bred horse of the year NATIONAL ORLANDO, Fla. - Canadian-owned and Canadian-bred San Pail, a sevenyear-old who won 14 of 16 races in 2011, was honoured Sunday as harness racing’s Horse of the Year. San Pail also took home the trophies for Trotter of the Year and top older trotter at the annual banquet of the U.S. Harness Writers Association. San Pail received 93 of 117 votes for Horse of the Year after winning $1.28 million. He is the oldest honoree since seven-yearold Savoir in 1975. He registered 11 of those wins and over $934,000 in earnings in Canada between Mohawk and Woodbine racetracks. San Pail is co-owned by breeder Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, Ont., and is trained by Rod Hughes of Dunsford, Ont. *** LAVAL, Que. - The same people behind Montreal’s Bell Centre arena are going to be managing a new sports complex to be built north of the city. The City of Laval says entertainment promoter Evenko will operate the arena and telecommunications giant Bell has secured the

naming rights to the facility. The building will be called Place Bell. Laval’s rink will be built for $120 million and is slated to open in 2014. The cost of the facility will be split between the provincial and municipal governments as well as Evenko, an entertainment promoter tied to the Montreal Canadiens. The City of Laval had hoped to build the facility using a private-public partnership, but says it had to change plans when it didn’t find a proposal it deemed acceptable. INTERNATIONAL TOKYO - Tokyo formally submitted its bid to host the 2020 Olympics on Monday, delivering the file to the International Olympic Committee’s headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, two days ahead of a Feb. 15 deadline. “The Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee, together with the Japanese people, is truly honoured and excited to submit our nation’s application file for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Tokyo 2020 President and Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda said. Tokyo bid unsuccessfully for

the 2016 Olympics, which were awarded to Rio de Janeiro. Tokyo is now competing with Rome, Madrid, Istanbul, Doha, Qatar and Baku, Azerbaijan. Tokyo is promising a compact bid with all facilities within an 8-kilometre radius. Forty per cent will be existing venues that will be renovated. *** BELLEFONTE, Pa. The judge overseeing the child sex abuse case of Jerry Sandusky says the former Penn State assistant coach can see most of his grandchildren while he awaits trial. The judge ruled Monday that Sandusky can also use a jury chosen from the State College area to hear his case. Sandusky had sought eased bail restrictions that would allow him access to his grandchildren. In his ruling, the judge said Sandusky can see the children under their parents’ supervision, except for three grandchildren who are the subject of custody litigation. Prosecutors had sought to have Sandusky confined to his home after hearing complaints from neighbours, but the judge denied that request.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2012

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The adventurous Aries won’t be disappointed with taking on a new challenge, despite some initial misgivings. Look for this move to open other opportunities down the line. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Let that beautiful Bovine smile not only put you at ease, but also show that you’re ready, willing and more than able to confound the naysayers around you. A new admirer has important news. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful how you handle a relationship that you’re hoping to save. You already have the facts on your side. Avoid weakening your position by embellishing it with unnecessary dramatics. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking definitive stands isn’t easy for the often-wavering Moon Child. But you not only need to stay with your decision, but also reassure others it was the right

thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As a proud Lion, you’re right to be upset about those who might be lying about you to others. But the best revenge is proving them wrong by succeeding at what you set out to do. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a “promising project. Look for the facts behind the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A Taurus offers comfort and advice as you deal with an upsetting event. Use this as a learning experience that will help you avoid similar problems in the future. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it’s well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to make new friends

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New ventures continue to be favored. And with your self-confidence rising all the time, you’ll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time for the usually “serious-minded Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary. But don’t let yourself be talked into changing your decisions. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for bringing people together. You would make a fine judge or counselor.
