The Souris Valley Theatre unveiled its new artistic director, Kenn McLeod, who will be guiding the theatre’s performances this season. Above, actors rehearse for last year’s production of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at the Souris Valley Theatre. The Souris Valley Theatre has announced the appointment of its new artistic director as preparations begin for the 2014 theatre season in Estevan. A product of Regina, Kenn McLeod first got a taste of theatre in high school, competing in the Improv Games before completing a bachelor’s degree in acting. Coming out of school, he co-founded Hectik Theatre, a company in Regina that sprung up in 2005. “In that time I went to Las Vegas for three years to get my master’s degree in directing,” he said. Following that education he worked in Vancouver before coming back to Regina to work at the U of R in the theatre department. “I’ve done a lot of training at different facilities around North America, like physical theatre and clown and puppetry … acrobatics. It’s not the standard fare, I guess.” While training he also worked with the National Tour of Peter Pan in the United States and worked at the Sacramento musical theatre for two summers as an assistant director. “I’ve done a lot of theatre. People say ‘Why do you do it?’ and I say ‘Because it’s the thing that I know how to do the best.’” He said he has taken the word actor off of his resume, preferring the word performer. “I don’t necessarily seek out acting as much as I did,” said McLeod who did perform in a production for Golden Apple Theatre in Regina, What Would Judas Do? “I still act, but I consider myself a director first and foremost. “I’ve also said that if the show goes well, everybody congratulates the actors, but if the show goes poorly, everybody blames the director. I’m all about them congratulating the actors.” He said the decision to work behind the scenes came shortly after graduating and the prospect of auditioning across the country became a tiring reality. He also wanted to bring productions into Regina that weren’t being shown, plays that would cater to a different audience that perhaps weren’t getting what they desired out of the theatre. “I just finished my undergraduate, so I had my reservations about running out around the country and auditioning at all the theatres. I was kind of interested in making theatre in Regina, at the time, but there wasn’t a lot. There was the Globe, where I had worked a little bit, but it wasn’t enough, so I thought I would start my own company.” With a company under his watch, he didn’t want to try to perform in every production, instead preferring to find great people to act in each play. “I thought I would just find the people who were the best at being in the shows and I would try to work with them,” he said. “That has been my strength going forward, finding the right people to do the projects. I really enjoyed the whole aspect of having a show come together and the really creative process and collaboration with the other artists involved.” He said Hectik’s mandate is to provide, edgy and thought-provoking theatre that challenges the audience
and artists involved. “We’ve found over the past few years a lot of ways to serve that mandate. Sometimes it’s Canadian premiers. Sometimes it’s a show you just wouldn’t normally see in Regina, and trying to showcase local performers or ex-pats of Saskatchewan.” The experience of working on that many productions, which are generally done on small budgets will make the transition to the Souris Valley Theatre program a seamless one, he said. Though the productions themselves will be quite different. “The stuff that I do with Hectik is not the stuff I would add to the programming in Estevan. It’s great to be part of two companies that have two very different mandates, so that the shows that I might have wanted to do with Hectik in the past but couldn’t because it wouldn’t fit into our mandate are now the kind of shows that we can do in Estevan. The stuff that is less of a risk to a box office and to an audience. It’s a lot more connective and fun,” he said. McLeod is used to producing shows with fewer than six cast members, so he is well fitted and equipped when it comes to hosting the types of plays typical of Frehlick Hall. He added that his production values are always incredibly high for an independent company in Hectik, making a clear distinction between amateur and independent theatre. The theatre isn’t yet ready to release the names of the productions coming for the 2014 season, but McLeod said the group will be ready to get to work in June, with a potential starting date for shows in early July. “I’m really excited for the potential of working down in Estevan. I’m very appreciative of the board so far. It’s really welcoming to have a board that is so passionate about what it is they want and how important they feel it is to the community.”

Always moving forward, I think There are lots of silly notions of the past that slowly fade away as we march ever onward together in a tide of progressiveness. Even our conservative members are less conservative than they once were. It’s a natural trajectory for our communities to become more progressive, more open, more accepting of the changes that are ultimately good for us, even if some question their validity in the beginning. Men don’t get a lot of credit for being the sensitive sex, but when it comes to breadwinning, we’re a fetal position of testosterone-filled tears and knee hugging in the bathroom. We want to make more money than our better halves, and if we don’t, we immediately feel emasculated because for thousands of years it has been up to men to provide for the family, and we just can’t possibly still be men if our wives are paid more. It doesn’t make me very proud of my brothers in arms to see how we handle the issue of women earning reasonable livings. Relationships are rarely the easiest thing we have to deal with and as with most parts of life, money plays a big role in the relationship with our significant other. I like to think the issue about women earning more than men is one that is dying out. When we see reports showing marriages in which the woman earns more
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers experience less happiness and more strife, I like to think the studies are still heavily weighted to one side because of these old timey beliefs dying hard in our Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers. There can’t possibly be young men growing up intimidated by successful women. The march forward is a slow but hopefully steady and uninterrupted journey. To be fair to men everywhere, and without pointing any fingers directly at the ladies out there, it has been found that women also have deep-rooted beliefs in how relationships work, who should earn more and what needs to happen around the house if women find themselves in well-paying positions. Women who earn more than their husbands are also sure to do more housework in order to balance the scales and ease the mind of their threatened husbands. High-earning single women play down their success when courting gentlemen or just completely skip all that nonsense and
try to find a mate who does earn more, thus ensuring she won’t have to deal with the shattered and tormented ego of a man-child. This really doesn’t sound like the sort of thing that would exist in our modern world. The small boxes that we use to store our gender roles are supposed to have been filed away into storage a long time ago. As a guy who is in a relationship with a woman who wins way more bread than I do, it’s incomprehensible to think anybody could be threatened or uncomfortable with that dynamic. According to the rules of the past, my manhood is supposed to have been taken, but it still all feels like it’s right there in the same place it has always been, unharmed and intact. I will roll my eyes when I hear my sister or girlfriend talking about how difficult things still are for women and what sort of expectations they are still required to meet. But then I hear about my fellow dudes just not being able to cope with the idea that a woman could make more money than him, and I think, “OK, you ladies still have to jump through a lot of unnecessary hoops. We still make you coddle us and stroke our gentle egos.” Our masculinity is an unquestionably frail thing, that much is clear, but as we move forward, as we continue taking baby steps toward a more reasonable world, we men may just begin to toughen up a little.
Trend toward big enterprise will continue The trends to ever-larger agricultural enterprises continue. When Maple Farm Equipment in Yorkton, a major John Deere dealership in east central Saskatchewan, announced Friday it was taking on The Jim Pattison Group as a partner, it was big news locally for farmers. Having The Pattison Group suddenly entering the farm machinery business is rather significant. The British Columbiabased business has $7.5 billion in sales and 35,000 employees according to www.jimpattison.com. Those are significant numbers. Jim Pattison has a wealth of business experience in various endeavours, and the fact he has determined he wants to now be involved in agriculture through the Maple Farm Equipment group suggests a faith in the sector to continue to enjoy strength and growth. He is not a businessman to jump into a new business sector without doing his homework on that sector’s future. So farmers can take the partnership as a good sign that someone with a varied business portfolio is investing in a related agricultural sector. But the partnership also speaks to the trend flowing across almost every business sector, and that is that there is a trend
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist toward ever larger business entities. We only need to drive around a city such as Yorkton to see that. The restaurant trade is of course a prime example. There are numerous eating establishments in the city. The majority are part of chains, restaurants that have created a formula that works and have then built matching establishments in community after community. In the last couple of years, there have been about eight new restaurants opening in the city, seven under names already found in other communities. It is the same across most business sectors. If a new store opens, it is likely to be part of a chain. As in any city there are always rumours of new business looking to establish in the
city. Most are businesses associated with chains. That makes sense in terms of brand recognition, advertising, group purchasing, customer recognition, branding and a whole range of other business realities that have made chains successful. But even chains end up owned by even larger entities. A Sport Chek can trace its ownership to Canadian Tire as an example. Such a dominant business trend, of course, translates to the farm sector itself. Farms have grown ever larger since the end of the first great war. It is a decades long trend that shows no sign of altering course. Farms today, more than ever, are big business and economies of scale, the ability to assume debt and weather commodity price downturns are crucial to success. Farm size can often be a buffer in such situations. The risks are larger but so, too, is the upside, which, of course, is simply a reflection of business in general. Ever larger farms, ever larger store chains, bigger and bigger business, it is the way of the last 50 years and almost assuredly the next 50 as well.

Bob Barker wants an end to Ontario bear hunt National LONGUEUIL, Que. - About 100 representatives from industry, academia and government met at the Canadian Space Agency Tuesday for what’s being billed as the country’s first annual space conference. The event is taking place just a few weeks after Industry Minister James Moore unveiled Canada’s new space policy framework. Space agency boss Walt Natynczyk opened the conference and it continued with presentations from several senior government officials who are in charge of the use of Canadian space assets. The federal policy framework makes sovereignty and security the top priority and one presentation focused on the Department of National Defence’s involvement in space activities. Federal officials with Defence Research and Development Canada, the National Research Council and Environment Canada also spoke. The conference is taking place under tight federal budget restraints. Moore said earlier this month the Canadian Space Agency under Natynczyk has plenty of money to achieve its goals. The current CSA budget is $260 million. ***
TORONTO - Ontario is dismissing a request from TV personality Bob Barker to scrap plans to return the spring bear hunt in the province. Natural Resources Minister David Orazietti says Ontario plans a pilot project in eight out of 95 wildlife areas with nuisance bear problems to bring back a spring hunt, which the province banned in 1999. He wants to reduce the number of instances where police are forced to kill bears who get too close to people, and flatly disputes Barker’s claims that a spring hunt means cubs will starve to death after their mother’s are killed. Orazietti says he has a lot of respect for Barker, but insists the famous animal rights activist has his facts wrong this time. Barker calls the spring bear hunt barbaric, unethical and legislated cruelty that has nothing to do with science. Orazietti says public safety is his main concern, and points to one northern community where a 400 pound brown bear wandered the streets on Halloween as kids walked about with bags full of candy. He also points out that eight other provinces in Canada and the three territories have full-scale spring bear hunts, while the pilot project in Ontario is a smaller, targeted approach that is non-profit and limited to local hunters. International JERUSALEM - Israeli police stormed a sensitive Jeru-
salem holy site Tuesday to disperse a violent riot there mere hours before the Israeli parliament was to hold a charged debate over the status of sovereignty over the same site. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said about 20 masked Palestinian youths hurled stones and firecrackers at troops from atop the Temple Mount. Police then entered the compound and arrested three people. He said two police officers were lightly wounded. The site, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, is ground zero in the territorial and religious conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Clashes often erupt after Muslims conclude their prayers. Jews typically pray below at the Western Wall but tensions have grown lately with an increased number of Jews arriving to pray at the Temple Mount as well. Revered as Islam’s third holiest spot, the site’s iconic gold-topped Dome of the Rock enshrines the rock where Muslims believe the Prophet Mohammad ascended to heaven. Jews believe the rock may be where the holiest part of the two ancient temples stood about 2,000 years ago — and where religious Jews pray a third temple will one day be built. The site is so holy that Jews have traditionally refrained from praying on the hilltop, but attitudes among some Orthodox Jews have been evolving and there has been growing demand to allow Jews to pray there freely as well.

Speedskater selling skates to finance 2018 comeback National MONTREAL - New coach Tom Higgins wants the Montreal Alouettes to be as entertaining as ever but to win more games than last season. Higgins took part in a conference call with team owner Bob Wetenhall and management in which they did their best to dispel notions of a rift with general manager Jim Popp. “I’ve always marvelled at the level of talent in Montreal,” said Higgins, an experienced coach who was hired on Monday after spending five years as the CFL’s director of officiating. “I hope to bring a level of consistency and discipline. “We are going to be competitive and entertaining. And when you start doing that and playing disciplined football, usually you win more than you lose.” The Alouettes will start the season with a new head coach for a second year in a row. Last season, Dan Hawkins was hired with no CFL experience and was fired after five games. Popp took over for the remainder of an 8-10 campaign and had hoped to continue doing both jobs. But Wetenhall prefers having Popp stick to his GM duties. *** SAINT JOHN, - A Canadian short-track speedskater who won two medals at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin is selling her skates — and possibly one of the medals — to

He revealed at the end of last season that he is gay, but was a free agent and had remained unsigned until the Nets needed another big man.

Anouk Leblanc-Boucher won individual bronze in the 500 metres and silver in the 3,000-metre relay with teammates Alanna Kraus, Amanda Overland, Kalyna Roberge and Tania Vicent. Leblanc-Boucher is now known as Anouk English and is a mother of three who lives in New Brunswick. The 29-year-old native of Prevost, Que., listed the items on the Kijiji website on Feb. 10, with an asking price of $7,000 for the skates. The silver medal will cost quite a bit more: she told the local CBC affiliate she’d part with it for $1 million. The bronze medal is not for sale. International KINGSTON, Jamaica - The Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed it cleared Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown of any anti-doping rule violation. In a statement on Tuesday, CAS said it set aside earlier decisions by a Jamaican disciplinary panel and an international review board that was recommending a two-year suspension. The Switzerland-based court’s announcement came a day after Campbell-Brown said she was cleared to return to competition. The court says the three-time Olympic gold medallist

Upper Souris restores 60 acres of wetlands With greater interest in restoring wetlands that have previously been allowed to drain, the Upper Souris WatershedAssociation (USWA) announced the reclamation of 60 acres. The desire to make every possible acre a producing one is strong, but that has meant the destruction of wetlands in the productive southeast corner of the province. As has been monitored, the decrease in wetlands has some negative side effects when it comes to wildlife populations, flood mitigation and overall health of the watershed. The USWA spent time last year working on a restoration pilot project with
Dave Pattyson Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Lake Winnipeg Basin Stewardship Fund. The project involved eight producers who owned 19 previously drained wetlands and desired to take part in the Wetland Restoration Landowner Incentive Program.
The majority of the restored land had become productive and was involved in growing crops. “A lot of time what people find when they drain a wetland is they may have difficulty getting crops to establish in it, especially when we’re in these years of higher moisture,” said Dave Pattyson, co-ordinator for the USWA. “Some of the folks were taking a look at that particular parcel of land and the economics just simply weren’t there for the potential losses, being that it was fairly damp land anyway, even after it was drained.” Pattyson said the final tally of the project’s cost hasn’t yet been determined,

and the E
but suggested the total to restore the 60 acres would be a little more than $100,000. Along with the supporting organizations, the project included financial support from the federal Department of the Environment. The majority of the cost went toward landowner incentives, which totaled more than $75,000 and was paid out at the end of 2013 following the installation of plugs in the fall. “We were quite pleasantly surprised,” said Pattyson regarding the response from landowners. “This was an initial pilot project. We had more demand for the program than the scope of the program we had put in place. The majority of people were quite receptive to the concept of restoring these wetlands.”
For the landowners who utilize water sources in their local areas, he said there should be an improvement in water quality that’s flowing through that part of the watershed. The cost of each project varies depending on the topography and the amount of design work, but Pattyson called the installation of each plug quite cost effective. The restored wetlands were spread out around the watershed and averaged about three acres in size, which is ideal for slowing the movement of water runoff and decreasing the amount of nutrients leaving the land. “Basically what was done was ditch plugs were installed. The ditch plugs are designed to bring that basin up to its pre-drainage level,”

said Pattyson, noting they are designed so the water will run off around the outside of the ditch plug. He added that all of the areas restored were wetlands that had been drained for a while, though the 19 areas would have experienced draining at different times. “Some of them were in land that had been converted to pasture. Some of them are in existing cropland,” Pattyson said. “When it’s already converted into pasture, it’s actually a simpler process, but if it’s in cropland, what we want to do is establish a grass buffer around the wetlands as well.” The buffer strips provide additional filtration into the water that is discharged from the wetland and sent downstream. For each site visit the technicians have to be sure the potential wetland isn’t part of a farmer’s drainage works, while calculating the area of the traditional wetland and determining the size of the plug required. “Another step in the process is actually taking a look to make sure that by restoring that wetland we are not going to affect any adjacent landowner either by removing a water source from them or actually backing one up onto their property.” The USWA is focused on improving water quality and making beneficial changes in the watershed, said Pattyson. “This was the type of project where we thought there would be an opportunity to maybe have some impact on water quality that enters into the Souris River system.” Depending on the funding available, he added the USWA plans on keeping the wetland restoration program around each year. They are exploring funding options in 2014 to continue a focus on restoring wetlands throughout the watershed.

Community constable program looking for applicants The Estevan RCMP detachment is looking to expand its community presence by taking advantage of a pilot program in planting community constables into the service. For those interested in a job in policing and who also have an intrinsic knowledge of Estevan and area, Sgt. Cate Rigaux wants to see you pursue the uniform. Estevan’s RCMP sergeant said she very much wants to see Estevan involved in the program, which will see six community constables placed around the province. Anyone interested may contact the Estevan detachment at 306-637-4400 to leave information and get the ball rolling before attending depot in Regina in spring 2015 for the required 21 weeks of training. Rigaux noted that upon graduation, the community constables will be special constables who are armed and uniformed personnel. “We expect them to have specific knowledge of the language, the culture and the history of the communities they are going to be serving in,” said Rigaux. “That’s why we ask that anybody who we’re looking for in the Estevan area is from (the Estevan area).” She said these special members will be in the schools as liaisons, visible as traffic officers and attending council meetings to hear concerns and feedback from citizens in different towns. “They complement our existing members. They
do not replace us. They’ll provide investigative support when required, but their focus is going to be on crime prevention and reduction, and community engagement.” If there is a chronic issue in one of the towns or a crime spree, the community constable would be responsible for implementing a program to try to deal with the issue. “They’re going to help increase the RCMP’s cultural competence and they’ll strengthen the relationships, visibility, communication and continuity of services within the different communities that we police here.” Ideal candidates are people with knowledge of the Estevan area and have an interest in policing. Previous policing experience isn’t a necessity, noted Rigaux. Good communication and relationship-building skills are also of high importance. “This program is going to consist of special constable members, armed, informed peace officers.” Rigaux said each community constable will be employed for one year under the pilot program before it is assessed. She said if the pilot program is ultimately abandoned after that first year, the RCMP will try to find a position for the community constables elsewhere in the force, perhaps having interested people complete training to become constables. “We’re fighting hard to get one in Estevan,” she said with a laugh. for that to happen, interest will need to be shown by someone from within the community looking to take on the role. She said they have already had some interest. Anyone interested may submit their name and information to the local detachment, where it will then be forwarded to the recruiter in Regina. That recruiter will then guide the potential constable through the necessary processes before the training next spring and there will be exams to complete before training can begin. Rigaux added the position is a full-time one. “They’re special con-

stable members, so they have 21 of the 25 or 26 weeks (training) that we receive.” She said the lower mainland of E Division in British Columbia has community liaison officers (CLOs), which is a similar type of role, but added this is the first she has heard of a program like this one. “I think it would be a very valuable asset here. We have a large detachment area and quite a high file load. Any increase in resources we can dedicate specifically to high visibility, going into the schools, crime prevention, it would only benefit the communities around here.”

If you have a pair of skates, visit an outdoor rink – this is the only time of year they’re open. 3) If you are a smoker, try to cut down or quit smoking this winter. Don’t be afraid to reach out to friends and family members for support. When lifestyle changes aren’t enough, Dr. Chris Mohr, RD, PhD, recommends a probiotic supplement that can help bridge the gap between diet, exercise and drugs. “Cardioviva is the only probiotic that’s been clinically proven to help reduce bad cholesterol,” says Dr. Mohr. This supplement has been shown to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels by reducing the amount we absorb from food and the amount the body naturally produces.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
(NC) Health-conscious Canadians are paying particular attention to cardiovascular health. Seasonal changes can sometimes throw us off our regular routines and some people discard heart-healthy habits for more convenient, unhealthy behaviours. In fact, statistics show that as many as 40% of Canadians have high cholesterol, which is a risk factor for heart disease. Experts say the most important factors in cholesterol management are healthy lifestyle choices like a nutritious diet, regular physical activity and not smoking. During the winter months, some people find they lapse in these areas as they spend more time indoors to avoid the chilly weather and enjoy more hearty winter meals. Here are some tips to help you stay heart healthy this season. 1) Try to consume more heart-healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts and berries. Avoid foods with high levels of trans fats. If you do decide to indulge in convenience or comfort foods, try to reduce

Anton “Tony” Fedyk June 4, 1927 - February 8, 2014 It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my dear husband, Tony, on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home. Tony was born on June 4, 1927, to Peter and Teni (Masiak) Fedyk. They lived on a farm north west of Frobisher, known as the Harry Brandon farm. To this union was born one daughter, Mary and four sons, William (died at birth), Tony, Steve, and John. Tony’s father passed away at a young age of forty eight, leaving Tony at the age of fourteen to help suppor t his mother and young family who were left. Tony worked for the City of Estevan, also Breeze Dairy farm, then as a farm hand at numerous farms in the Frobisher area. In 1954, he was employed by Hamill and Goodwin Lumber Yard in Frobisher until he started his own trucking business in 1964 known as Tony’s Cattle Taxi. Tony loved playing hockey as a young man and attended many Estevan Bruin hockey games as well as never wishing to miss any NHL games on T.V. Tony and Mary were married on October 5, 1957 and lived in their cosy home in Frobisher until moving to Estevan in June 2010. Tony and Mary spent many summer months of each year camping at Kenosee Lake, meeting new friends and enjoying the great outdoors. Tony spent many hours of his retirement building bird houses in which his remains rest in one of his works of art. To God be the glory of his long life. He will be missed. Tony is survived by his wife, Mary; brother, John (Gert) Fedyk; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as many close friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Tina Fedyk; brothers, Steve (Rose) Fedyk and William in infancy; sister, Mary (Hyacinth) Berthelette. A Memorial Service took place on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services, Estevan, with Doug Third officiating. Those wishing to make donations in Tony’s memory may do so directly to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, Box 5000 - 203, 1176 Nicholson Road, Estevan, SK, S4A 2V6 or the New Estevan Regional Nursing Home, 1201 - 2nd Street, Estevan, SK, S4A 0M1. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Estevan.
Thank You
A special thank you to all the wonderful friends and family who supported me in the loss of my husband, Tony. Thank you for all the great food, host of cards, many phone calls, visits, and donations made. Thank you to Doug Third for a wonderful service. Also, a big thank you to Hall Funeral Services for their excellent help in my time of need, especially Jeff. To Dustin Hall, the solo was so comforting and beautiful. Thank you to the Legion ladies for serving the lunch. Doreen, Marilyn, and Donna, I just cannot express in full my love and appreciation for all your help and kindness. My love to all, Mary.
Martin Richaud 1954 - 2014 Clare “Martin” Richaud, late of Forget, SK passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the age of 59 years.
