Money Problems?
The Heart and Stroke Foundation recognizes Heart Month in February, and Tamara Bloor is heading up the local campaign that raises money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, while providing funding for heart-healthy programs in communities across the province.

Heart health in spotlight Heart Month is a chance to focus on health. The local campaign held a kick-off rally at the Estevan Public Library on Jan. 30, as canvassers came in to collect the kits they will be taking door to door over the next month, looking for donations. Tamara Bloor is the local Heart and Stroke Foundation’s latest co-ordinator keeping the roughly 50 canvassers organized and motivated while they are out braving the cold. Bloor noted that there are many ways the donations provide concrete returns in the community, including automated external defibrillators (AED) and programming designed to promote heart health. “The funds are used to place AEDs and we have two in the city,” said Bloor, who said that was good for a city like Estevan. She compared it with Weyburn, where she is also co-ordinating the campaign, and noted that city doesn’t have an AED yet. “It’s quite good for the city to have two placed.” She said the funds also go to research programs, including an upcoming project at the University of Saskatchewan that will focus on heart disease and stroke. Bloor noted, communities like Estevan also benefit through My Healthy Community grants. Community projects can apply for funds of up to $4,000 as long as they are focusing on improving heart health. Bloor noted in Weyburn a grant was awarded to the Bridge School, which is a school for at-risk youth. “They have their own facility but they didn’t have a gym, so their students would have to go off-site or make up their own physical activity requirements. They were awarded a My Healthy Community grant to put a gym in their school and ensure that their students were meeting the daily physical activity requirements, just as students at the high school would be.” Bloor said there is a push this year to get people involved and donating in ways other than through the door-to-door canvassers. “We’re continuing the door-to-door campaign that has been in Estevan for many, many years, but we’ve also added a business campaign this year. We have several businesses in town that will be selling paper hearts as part of the Share Your Heart campaign.” There are four businesses in Estevan taking part in the
campaign, and anyone can visit to donate through the sale of the red paper hearts Those businesses include Pharmasave, LiveFree Activewear, Soul Hideout and Jenny Joans. Other businesses in the city are participating in Wear What You Love, which is an employee dress-down day that sees employees donating in order to wear casual clothes. “That’s an addition to the campaign this year that hasn’t been done much in Estevan. It has been done in the past, but we’re trying to grow that part of the campaign,” Bloor said. Even with the other initiatives, the canvassers and volunteers are still the lifeblood of Heart Month. “We’ve had a really good response this year. We have some new canvassers coming on this year, which is awesome,” she said. “When they pick up the phone and it’s someone on the other end of the line, I’m really glad so many people are willing to take that up. I know everyone’s busy. Everyone’s got lots on the go, so I’m very thankful that these people signed up.” Bloor noted the local campaign was about six canvassers short of where they wanted to be on Jan. 30, two days before the start of Heart Month. “”We were about six short, and I contacted the Estevan Bruins, and they are sending 12 of their players into the community in the month of February to walk six routes for me. They have picked up those extra positions, and I’d like to thank them for that,” she said. “The Bruins are a community team, and they’re showing that they support the community as well.” Bloor said there was an AED in Affinity Place, where the Bruins call home, and it is one of two defibrillators in the city, with the other one housed at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club. There are canvassers in areas all over the city, but Bloor said if a canvasser doesn’t come to your door, you can go to one of the businesses to buy a paper heart. There is no set price for the hearts, so people may make a donation of their choosing. The canvassers all have volunteer badges to make them easily recognizable, noted Bloor. “You won’t see somebody come to your door and not be able to identify themselves with the badge. They’re going to have the kit and the badge.” Donations may also be made online at heartandstroke. sk.ca For those looking to volunteer or otherwise get involved, that website will help them get started.

It’s an Olympic year, but things don’t feel the way the Games are supposed to make us feel. The Olympics of today are not the Olympics of years past, and that’s something we have come to a begrudging acceptance of. The Games have become a machine of money and corporate interests, and the next few weeks in Sochi will really test whether we can separate that machine from the celebration of sport and sportsmanship that the Olympics are supposed to be. With all of the controversies surrounding the Games, it leaves one wondering if this year is different. Given everything that has become entangled in the two-week global athletics event, should we support it? Everyone has to answer that question for him or herself, and certainly there is a part of me that wants to support it as long as there is just one Canadian participating, and there are a lot more than that. There are hundreds of Canadians, athletes we consider friends, neighbours and role models who will be competing at the Games. I want to support them and want them to succeed and be proud of whatever they accomplish. I want them to represent Canada on an international scene because our politicians and celebrities do little to
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers build bridges to our foreign counterparts. Still, I’m having a hard time convincing myself the Games actually deserve our collective attention. By watching, we’re shrugging our shoulders at the corruption and fraud that has been so commonplace in Sochi for the past few years. The Games are slowly evolving to display some of the worst in humanity rather than its best, as intended by the exhibition of strength and athleticism. I guess that’s just a natural development when money is involved as the economic element of the Olympics increases with each event. The financial incentives are so much more than they ever were and that trend will continue. I’m sure many if not most athletes compete for noble enough reasons, but with the sponsorship deals and subsequent celebrity that often follows Olympic greatness, there is something greater than representing your country and engaging in cultural exchange at play for many athletes. That isn’t to say the Games don’t show-
case great lessons we can all learn, perhaps most importantly among them are how the Games can teach or inspire people to live active lives and stay healthy. In that way, the spectacle works as an excellent public service announcement, and we all should probably heed the subtext that is beating us over the head while we watch. Be more physically active and in the end, be more successful even if you aren’t looking to succeed in sport. The Olympics, in a very basic way, are a demonstration of what we can accomplish if we are healthy, if we are treating our bodies like the sacred temples they really are. There are many ways to view the Olympics, as righteous and pure or as corrupt and unfair. So often we are selecting countries to host this event, and they have shoddy records when it comes to safety standards like in China, or stone-age social stances like Russia’s refusal to acknowledge gay people actually exist in their cities. I certainly have more and more trouble separating sports and politics, but we all have to decide if the political and social platforms have corrupted the Olympics beyond a tolerable point. I will still tune in from time to time, but I just don’t think I’ll feel very good about it.
More debate needed over farmers’ rights to seed There is an issue facing farmers that isn’t getting as much attention as one might expect. The federal government is in the midst of making decisions that could fundamentally change what rights farmers have in terms of what rights they have to use the grain they grow as seed. It has long been a general premise of farming that they retain a portion of the seed they produce to plant in following years. It is about as simple and reasonable a process as there is, and one that works to ensure continued production over the long term, which historically also ensured a food supply. The idea of grain production in Canada for sustainable food production for Canadians isn’t really an issue. Reasonably, a very few Canadian Prairie farmers could produce enough grain to satisfy domestic production. But being able to keep grain as seed should be a rather basic and widely held right for producers. It has been that way since the earliest crops were produced and has stood farmers in a good position to produce food in an ongoing and sustainable fashion. In November. Canada’s Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced that Canada plans to sign on to UPOV ’91 by August of this year. “The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) is an intergovernmental organization that has cre-
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ated model laws that allow seed developers to claim property rights similar to patents. Canada joined UPOV and adopted its 1978 model law by passing the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act in 1990. The 1991 model law, known as UPOV ’91, enhances the rights of multinational seed companies such as Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer, Dow, Viterra, Pioneer, DuPont and Cargill, while restricting farmers’ rights,” explains the National Farmers Union website. Now I can imagine some readers dismissing anything coming from the NFU as the organization has a reputation of being reactionary to many farm issues, and have long favoured a more family-oriented vision of agriculture, which seems counter to the general trend of ever-larger operations. But when UPOV is looked at in context with the federal government’s omnibus agriculture bill called the “Agricultural Growth Act,” which contains the required amendments to the Plant Breeders Rights Act to conform with UPOV ‘91 among other measures, the situation should be sending up some red flags. The NFU sets out its key concerns on
its website, suggesting adopting UPOV ’91 will immediately: Reduce the freedom and independence of Canadian farmers by making it much more difficult to save and reuse seed forcing them to pay more for seed; transfer millions of dollars every year from farmers to plant breeders’ rights (PBR) holders consolidate the power and control of world’s largest agribusiness corporations over seed, and thus over the Canadian farming and food system. It’s hard not to envision the above scenarios playing out. If companies gain added rights, they will charge farmers. To do otherwise would not make sense from their business perspective, and while the extent of such fees are an unknown, the Canadian acreage and annual production would suggest millions annually. Now it might be argued many farmers now buy their seed annually, and there are some agronomic benefits from doing that, especially in times of high returns. The underlying question though has to be how much control of seed do we want to put in corporate hands? It’s not being Orwellian to expect the worst of big business. It’s a concern based on a lot of past evidence in other areas. To go down that road with food production could be to flirt with ever higher costs for both farmers, and eventually consumers, and so the issue needs more open debate than it seems to be getting before signing the dotted line.

Farmer challenging right to unpasteurized milk National TORONTO - A crusading farmer and his supporters are taking their self-professed right to drink unpasteurized milk, which the government calls a “significant public health risk,” to Ontario’s top court this week. Raw milk farmer Michael Schmidt is arguing that by making the sale and distribution of unpasteurized milk illegal, the province is infringing on both his and his customers’ basic freedoms. The charter includes “the right of individuals to make decisions pertaining to their own bodies and their own health,” Schmidt’s lawyers write in arguments filed with Ontario’s Appeal Court. “The appellant’s longstanding efforts to make unpasteurized milk available to non-farmers have been an important and fundamental
life choice, having demonstrably profound psychological, economic, social and ethical consequences for him.” But the province doesn’t see it that way. The law is meant to protect public health and infringes neither Schmidt’s nor his customers’ charter rights, the government argues. “Consumers of unpasteurized milk do not have a liberty or security of the person ‘right’ to consume unpasteurized milk,” government lawyers say in their written arguments. “Like selling unpasteurized milk, drinking unpasteurized milk is not a fundamental life choice.” Schmidt has been locked in a decades-long battle with the province — including a hunger strike — over raw milk, which he believes is not only safe, but offers health benefits.
The farmer from the municipality of West Grey was originally charged in 1994, and later convicted, of selling or distributing unpasteurized milk. It’s not illegal for farmers to drink raw milk from their own cows, so a few years later Schmidt devised a so-called “cow share” program, through which his approximately 150 customers bought ownership in a cow or herd for $300, $600 or $1,200. Schmidt believes that’s legal, through a concept known as agistment. An agister cares for livestock owned by other people, who are the ones entitled to the animals’ products, Schmidt’s lawyers say. The Crown argues that Schmidt is still the one with legal title to the cows, as there is no evidence his customers “enjoy the benefit” of ownership except for a right
to consume the milk and cheese products for a fee. International PARIS - Rwanda’s former intelligence chief faced genocide and war crimes charges Tuesday as his trial began in France for a 1994 killing spree that left at least a half-million people in his nation dead. Pascal Simbikangwa, 54, could face a life sentence if convicted after the seven-week trial — the first in France over Rwanda’s genocide. The case has highlighted criticism of France’s own reaction to the genocide a generation ago, and its slow exercise of justice after the slaughter of at least 500,000
people in Rwanda in just over 100 days. “We’ll do what we have done from the start, plead for a not-guilty verdict,” said defence lawyer Fabrice Epstein, claiming the facts haven’t fully been established. The defendant, infirm from an accident years ago, was wheeled into the courtroom then transferred to a glassed-in area. He identified himself as “Pascal Safari,” a combination of his real name and his alias, Senyamuhara Safari, according to court documents. More than 50 witnesses — including journalists, historians, farmers, security guards and intelligence officials — are expected to be

called to testify, nearly all by the prosecution. Among civil parties to the case are Alain Gauthier and wife Dafroza, who lost more than 80 family members in the genocide. “I am especially dedicating this (trial) to the anonymous victims of Pascal Simbikangwa, those without a name, a grave,” she said before the start of the trial. “This is for them today. We are thinking of them.” Simbikangwa’s defence team has expressed concern that the trial will be lopsided — in part because of the difficulty in finding witnesses who will speak out in his defence.

IOC wants to keep politics out of Games International SOCHI, Russia - IOC President Thomas Bach has criticized politicians for attacking the Sochi Olympics “on the backs of the athletes.” Bach has also slammed politicians who publicly snubbed the games even though they had not even been invited. The International Olympic Committee leader spoke in a hard-hitting speech Tuesday, three days before the opening of Russia’s first Winter Games. The buildup to Sochi has been overshadowed by Western criticism of Russia’s
neutralized the Premier League’s most rampant attack in beating title rival Manchester City 1-0 on Monday, with Branislav Ivanovic’s first-half goal ending the deposed leaders’100 per cent winning record at home. Ivanovic lashed home a fierce 25-yard shot in the 31st minute to cap a brilliant counter-attacking display by the visitors, who defended supremely against a team that has already scored 115 goals this season in all competitions. It was the first time City failed to score at home in the league since November 2010 — a streak of 61 matches — and the hosts
record on human rights and the law against gay “propaganda” among minors. Bach says sports should not be “used as a stage for political dissent or for trying to score points in internal or external political contests.” President Barack Obama and key European leaders are shunning the games. Obama, in a key message against the antigay laws, has sent a delegation made up of three openly gay athletes. The presidents of France and Germany also won’t be coming. *** MANCHESTER, England - Chelsea
were lucky not to lose by an even bigger margin, with Chelsea hitting the goal frame three times and threatening almost every time they broke forward. Chelsea knew a defeat at Etihad Stadium — where City had won all of its 15 domestic league and cup games this season — would leave it six points behind City and potentially out of the title reckoning. Now, Jose Mourinho’s side is level on points with second-place City, leaving Arsenal back on top with a two-point lead in what is proving to be an intriguing threeway race for the championship.

Burris signs with expansion Redblacks National OTTAWA - The expansion Ottawa Redblacks made a splash on the CFL’s free-agent market Tuesday, signing veteran quarterback
Henry Burris. The move ends a whirlwind six days for the 38-yearold Burris, who was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week after the club
signed Zach Collaros to be their starting quarterback. “I’m very excited to make Ottawa my next CFL home,” Burris said in a statement. “I’ve heard many great
things about the new stadium and how people are getting pumped about football coming back to Ottawa. I’m really looking forward to being part of that scene.”

The Ottawa move comes as a bit of surprise given the Redblacks selected former Calgary Stampeders quarterback Kevin Glenn with the first pick in December’s expansion draft to help stock the CFL’s ninth franchise. Burris led the TigerCats to last season’s Grey Cup, where Hamilton fell 45-23 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He was tops in the league with 4,925 passing yards in 2013 to go along with 24 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. *** KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia - Mark McMorris’s first appearance at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park earlier this week was marred by pain and frustration. A broken rib from a recent crash at the X Games had made things quite uncomfortable for the Canadian snowboard star. But a solid training run Tuesday changed his mindset and left him optimistic ahead of this week’s slopestyle event at the Sochi Olympics. “Battling through the pain yesterday was kind of frustrating and then I came up here today and it was just better — way better,” McMorris said. “I was able to jump and start doing tricks
again. My confidence level is back up and I feel like I’m in a good place for breaking my rib 10 days ago.” McMorris had been tabbed as a gold-medal favourite in the leadup to the Games after a strong run on the slopestyle circuit over the last few years. His crash at the X Games left things up in the air and created several big questions. Would two weeks be enough time to recover? Could he return and be the same Mark McMorris? If his big smile for the large scrum of reporters was any indication, McMorris should be just fine. “Two days out before a non-elimination round, I couldn’t be in a happier place,” he said. “It’s still broken, it’s going to be painful and I know I’m going to have to ride through pain. “But just to get a shot at trying to do what I want to do is the important part.” The 20-year-old Regina native skipped Monday’s practice session and instead went for a casual ride around the mountain. McMorris has been medically cleared to compete but even a light run left him in more pain than expected. He was thrilled that he noticed a marked improvement just 24 hours later.
