Money Problems?
Marla Adams CA CIRP Trustee in Bankruptcy
The breast cancer screening mobile unit was scheduled to be in Estevan this January until March. Technical problems forced it offline, but after upgrades to the system, the bus will be back in the Energy City in June.
Breast cancer screening unit postponed to June The breast cancer screening mobile unit will not be coming to Estevan just yet. The bus was scheduled to be in Estevan from Jan. 16 to March 2, but equipment difficulties have been cited for the need to remove the unit from service. The mobile is now being retrofitted with a new digital equipment installation. Sangeeta Gupta, manager of the screening program for breast cancer at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, said there was “sudden equipment failure” in the mobile unit and they were unable to take exposures with the mammogram machine. “We recognized the problem right away,” said Gupta, noting that they had plans to do an upgrade to digital equipment. “We realized it was time to do the retrofit.” To repair the analog mammogram machine would have cost about $36,000, so moving right into the installation of new equipment seemed to them like the best thing to do. The digital upgrade will cost about $500,000, so it
can continue to serve the roughly 10,000 women it screens each year, with more women participating in the mobile screening all the time. “(Digital) is the standard in breast imaging,” she added. For those who were expecting to take advantage of the mobile unit’s services when it arrived in Estevan, there are a couple of options available now. Gupta said the last time the unit was in Estevan would have been around this time two years ago, so women who are screened each year may want to make an appointment in Regina, Saskatoon or one of the satellite offices to receive their screening. Gupta expects the mobile unit will back in Estevan in June, and some women may wish to wait until then, particularly those who have difficulties travelling. She added that these screenings shouldn’t be put on hold too much, especially for women who receive annual screenings. “Cancers found early are just more treatable,” said Gupta. “Early detec-
tion is the best defence possible.” With the digital retrofit, images taken with the mammogram machine will be visible immediately, so there is instant feedback if there is something wrong with the image. The analog images had to be sent to Regina for processing, and sometimes if the exposure was too dark, there would have to be another exposure taken, bringing in the patient for a second appointment. The digital images allow magnification for better viewing of potential threats in the breast and are easier to transfer between centres. Gupta said the images still need to be sent to Regina for viewing, but noted that this is the first step on the way to being able to read the mammograms on the mobile unit. “The biggest advantage is to have the images available instantly, so we can look and see if anything else needs to be done.” There is also a decrease in radiation exposure because of the different way the digital

equipment penetrates the breast. Gupta said the new machine uses a tungstenrhodium filter which can have up to a 50 per cent dose reduction, varying among women. Women aren’t exposed to a large amount of radiation during mammograms—saskcancer.ca says doses have decreased 98 per cent in the last 20 years—but Gupta noted that for women who receive the screening each year, the difference could be significant. Wi t h t h e m o b i l e screening unit back in Estevan in June once the bus becomes fully operational again, Gupta reminds women that those eligible for screenings are over 50 years old, do not have breast cancer symptoms, do not have breast implants and are not on active follow-up for breast cancer. In the meantime, women who require screening are asked to make appointments in Regina or Saskatoon, or one of the satellite offices in Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Yorkton, North Battleford or Prince Albert.

A late New Year’s non-resolution To be clear, this is not a New Year’s resolution. A friend of mine passed this little pledge around, and it seemed like an interesting thing to do, with a small community of like-minded people to talk about it with. Beginning on Feb. 1, I am pledging to take part in proposition 365. This is not a political proposition, or a spin-off of the Occupy movement. It’s simply a pledge to listen to one great artist each day for a year. The goal is open yourself up to music you have passed off as poor quality or refused to listen to in the past. The artists are already chosen, with a compilation of 365 of the most influential musicians of the past 100 years. It’s not necessarily about the best musicians, but bands, solo artists and even orchestras that have been popular for a certain length of time. The pledge states that the goal is to familiarize oneself with the most influential musicians from the last 100 years, with the sole exception being Mozart. The argument could be made that just because his work was all composed before the 20th century began doesn’t mean his influence wasn’t felt in the last 100 years, so I’ll let that slide and listen to him without kicking up a big
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers stink about rigid time frames. It isn’t about how much of your favourite music has been included in the list of artists, as though if you had more of your favourite music chosen you won the game. It’s about having a second listen at music you once disregarded as boring or compared to cat screeching, or listening to something for the first time you never really paid any attention to before. Sure there are some days I think I’m already dreading, but I will be able to get Celine Dion over with in the first week, since the first week of artists has been released and she is on there. I just dread the moment I have to give Tim McGraw a first chance, with an open mind, of course. Other days I’m really excited about. I have only really listened to the odd Bill Withers’ song, and while I’ve never been compelled to explore his work, this does
give me an interesting excuse to listen to something other than Use Me Up or Ain’t No Sunshine. Those are great songs, and I’m sure he’s got plenty of other worthy tracks to listen to. While there aren’t any rules about what songs to listen to, I think it would be more interesting to listen to the non-classics over the No. 1 singles of these artists. I’ve probably already heard the big hits from the artists I don’t listen to, and they clearly haven’t done it for me. Actively going back with a fresh head to explore some of the lesser known songs might be one of the best ways to go about listening a lot of these groups. The artists feature lots of different music, from the Beach Boys to the Beastie Boys, from ABBA to AC/DC and from Faith Hill to Faith No More. Absent from the list is Justin Bieber, because he hasn’t earned his keeps yet, but includes Joni Mitchell right next to Limp Bizkit. It’s going to be an interesting year. I’ll let you know if there are any surprises, and you can take part too by heading to proposition365.wordpress.com. If anything surprises you, send me an e-mail: jbaker@estevanmercury.ca
Recycling must be done for right reasons The business of garbage, and the idea of protecting the environment is becoming an interesting one. The idea of recycling is becoming a major public desire. People feel good about recycling, having the impression at least it is their small, direct, contribution to aiding old Mother Earth. The idea of recycling is even becoming entrenched in the area of farming. Recently the government of Saskatchewan announced it was partnering with CleanFARMS to develop a way to manage on-farm plastic waste, such as bale wrap and grain bags. The idea is to reduce the environmental footprint of farming in the province, and of course win some points since anything tied to reducing waste is seen as a positive by most people these days. Tagging the term “environmentally positive” to anything is good politics. We see that in the world of retail where the sale of reusable cloth bags and similar efforts garner a lot of positive advertising. “We know that farmers are more than willing to participate in stewardship programs where they exist; they want to do the right thing. CleanFARMS currently operates a national empty pesticide container recycling program and an obsolete pesticide collection program, both of which have very high participation rates,” said Barry Friesen, general manager of CleanFARMS in a release. The government, of course, sees it as a good step. “We are pleased to see industry, govern-
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist ment and the broader stakeholder community work together to develop a recycling program for farmers,” said Saskatchewan Environment Minister Dustin Duncan in the same release. According to the release, CleanFARMS recently did a study of the agricultural waste stewardship programs in the province. The research revealed that the most successful programs had government legislation mandating participation such as those to manage used oil, oil filters and their containers, tires, paint and electronics. The government of Saskatchewan has tasked CleanFARMS with bringing together stakeholders to develop the framework for a program to recycle agricultural plastics such as bale wrap, twine and grain bags. If you read between the lines, expect environmental fees to be added to some farm products moving forward, and mandated recycling. The question that needs to be answered is exactly what the environmental footprint of recycling is. A farmer at Hyas, Sask. has a pile of plastic from bale twine and grain bags. What does it cost in fuel, tire wear, road maintenance,
and similar costs to get that plastic from the farm to some place that can actually recycle it into something useable? It may appear the “right” thing to do is to recycle, but the collection system from farmers spread across the entire province to a central location for re-use is a system that is automatically a costly one, and it also assumes there is a user for the products in the province. As has been a past situation with regard to cardboard, the user is not local. At times it has meant the cardboard had to get as far as China to be utilized. Does taking cardboard from Hyas to China to recycle it make sense? Probably not if you started to put the actual costs to the equation rather than just doing it because we deem recycling automatically a good thing. In the release Friesen stated, “Saskatchewan is an innovative province that is well positioned to become a leader in agricultural plastics recycling. In many cases, the technology is already in place. Bridon Corage, a highly successful twine manufacturer with a plant in the province, is currently making new twine out of used twine.” For anything designed to recycle farm plastics to make sense it has to have an end user in the province. And, any plan should have some cost analysis associated with it. Recycling must be good for the overall environment, not something we do just because we assume it’s a good thing.
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2012
Hypocrisy is a way of life I’ve never claimed to be perfect. Or at least, I don’t claim to be perfect very often. I’m very open about the fact that I have all kinds of flaws. And hypocrisy is one of those flaws. I realized the depth of this flaw while driving to and from work today. On my way this morning, I took a slightly longer way than usual, because I knew that doing so would prevent me from having to wait forever for someone to let me merge into traffic. I’ve made that mistake several times, and have been late to work as a consequence. So this morning, as I’m passing the spot where I usually try to merge with traffic, I can see several cars waiting to get into my lane. And rather than slowing down and allowing them into traffic, I continued driving, infinitely pleased with my own cleverness and the fact that I wasn’t among them. I realized this was terrible of me, because only a few days before I had been
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me among those unfortunate drivers, cursing the moronic drivers who refused to let me merge. Tomorrow morning when I go to work, I swear I will give at least one car a chance to join my lane. If I remember, which has a 50/50 chance, since work starts super early in the morning and sometimes it feels like I drive all the way there without opening my eyes. Another example of my spectacular hypocrisy also can be found in my driving. Today while driving home, I was road raging behind a slow-moving truck on Ring Road. I was definitely not on my best behaviour when I zoomed past him. But earlier, around lunch time, I’d been
impatiently tailgated by an agitated driver who had no desire to travel at the speed limit. The entire time, I smirked and mentally congratulated myself on being such a law-abiding, upstanding citizen. It’s strange how all of these situations feel completely different from the opposite side of things. I like to think I’m not a horrible person, nor am I a horrible driver (unless you ask SGI), but I sure get annoyed when things don’t go exactly as I like them when I’m driving. Does that make me an aggressive driver? An aggressive person? Or maybe passive-aggressive? Am I the only one? Tonaya Marr has entirely too much free time
Yesterday’s news is free fun for kids Before you bundle up your newspapers for the recycling bin, check out these easy recycling activities and crafts. Not only do they enhance creativity, they’re just plain fun when you want something to do. For starters, at breakfast time with your kids, get your brains in gear by coming up with the many ways you can use newspapers after everyone has read his or her favorite sections. You might come up with ideas such as: --Wrap birthday presents with the comics section, or cut out a special comic and tuck it in someone’s lunchbox for a surprise. --Dip strips of newspaper into liquid starch and make a papier-mache sculpture. --Wrap several layers around a hot casserole dish to keep the food warm when transporting it to a potluck supper. --Let your new Christmas puppy house-train on it. --Clip and use the manufacturer’s coupons for this week’s grocery shopping. Older kids can calculate the savings and develop an interest in cutting the family food bill. --Fold a kid-size newspaper hat. Make a collection of them, and your kids can pretend they are a pirate,
Martian, policewoman or whatever they are interested in. For a basic hat, fold one large rectangular newspaper page in half. At the top fold, bring the corners in to meet each other at the center of the page and crease. It makes a triangle. Below the triangle, fold the front bottom single layer of paper up to meet the triangle. Make another fold, the same size, over the triangle. Turn the hat over and
on her hands. She’d spend less time worrying about such trivial problems if travelling in Regina didn’t prevent her from singing loudly along with the radio. It’s super difficult to sing with enthusiasm when there’s a driver on either side of you mocking your vigor and tonelessness. If you have problems like Tonaya, e-mail her at tonaya.marr@gmail.com, or tweet her @TonayaMarr. Maybe you guys can start a self-help program together.

Kodak missed the digital boat it built, and now is sunk I’m not entirely sure how it got there, but recently a roll of Kodak 400 MAX colour film found itself on my desk. This is especially odd because I haven’t shot a roll of film since August
2003. What could it contain? Not having been refrigerated, surely the image has degraded. Why didn’t I develop it in the first place? Whatever it was, it must not have been important enough to care.

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile It was a much different world back then, in 2003. I had just hired on with the Battlefords NewsOptimist, and quickly realized that film had gone the way of the dodo bird. Within a month I took out a line of credit to buy myself a very pricey digital camera. The payoff was saving myself an hour of work each day, monkeying around with film. At the time there were two digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras I was seriously looking at - the Nikon D100, and the Fujifilm S2 Pro. Each was capable of producing a six-megapixel image, and each cost around $3,000. At the time, Kodak also made a DSLR, known as the Kodak DSC Pro 14n.
While it had more pixels and a larger sensor, it wasn’t in the running because it was simply too expensive for me at the time, coming in around $5,000. The reviews also found that it was a pretty poor camera compared to the Nikon or Fuji equivalents. At the inflection point of my photographic career, Kodak was not a consideration. I bought the Fuji, which was really a Fuji sensor grafted onto a Nikon body. It took better photos than the Nikon. Not surprisingly, the DCS 14n was one of the last professional level DSLRs Kodak would produce. Shortly thereafter, it was out of the DSLR game, never to return.

This is remarkable because not only had Kodak invented the first digital cameras in the ‘70s, it had a huge jump on the competition in the 1990s when it all but created the DSLR market. You can find a great retrospective by Calgary photographer Rob Galbraith here (http:// bit.ly/abX8F). The DSLR market was Kodak’s to lose, and lose it, they did. From 1994 to 2003, Kodak went from revolutionary innovator to also-ran. Professional level cameras are important because they are usually the bleeding edge technology, allowing lower level cameras to eventually pick up that tech. More importantly, they allow consumers to aspire to something better than they either need or can afford. Thousands buy Nikon’s D3100 and D5100 consumer models for every one flagship D4 sold. But a very large number of those D5100 owners love the idea of some day owning a D4, in the same way many car owners want a Mercedes. If you don’t have the high end, soon your low end suffers. Then you have no end, as Kodak has shown. In Kodak’s heyday, they were getting about 70-per-cent margins on film, and had about 90 per cent of the North American market. Consider this: since I went digital, I have
shot about 100,000 frames with my Fuji S2 Pro, and another 106,000 frames with my Nikon D200 before both were put out to pasture. Add to that another 137,000 frames with my current Nikon D700, and the total is 343,000 shots since 2003. I never would have shot anything close to that on film, but if I had, at an average cost of 50 cents per frame for developing and 4x6 printing, I would have put $120,000 into Kodak’s bottom line. That assumes consistently using Kodak film and Kodak labs, which isn’t terribly far-fetched. Instead, I have 10 terabytes of storage across eight external hard drives and three internal hard drives. Between all of these, I doubt Kodak made a dime unless it was for a royalty on some obscure patent. And in the meantime, my D4 on order is rated to take 400,000 frames before the shutter gives out, and I hope to add another 10 terabytes of storage this spring. While Kodak’s bankruptcy this month is sad, it was a long time in coming. The decisions they made 10 years ago have come home to roost. My roll of film on my desk sure looks lonely now - and obsolete.

What are the strange noises being heard around the world?
He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker
If you don’t know what we mean when we say “strange noises,” like I didn’t when it was first mentioned, you may want to make a Canadian trip to YouTube and search that term to experience what other people around the world are hearing from their backyards. In the videos, it sounds like the Earth is groaning, like it’s had enough of this funny business and just wants to destroy itself because that’s a reasonable thing to do this year. As some people might warn you, this phenomenon is a sure sign of the apocalypse. Of course these sounds mean the world is breaking apart and the end is nigh. What other reasonable explanation could there be? As one of the videos pointed out, they are not making any money off advertising, so there is no reason for them to create such a video if they weren’t warning the rest of the world of the impending doom that is to come. A report from thestar.com—not to be confused with the website for the Toronto Star that tries to hold some sort of journalistic standard—noted that the peculiar noises were heard during the nights of Jan. 11 and 12 in places from Budapest, Hungary to Conklin Alberta. Other videos of the noises have been posted across the country from places like The Pas, Thunder Bay and Montreal. Two things are clear: Canadians really can’t get enough YouTube, and we have wild imaginations. Some say the rumblings come from the very heart of the Earth, while others say the sound comes from the sky. These people are split into two groups: those who like the original War of the Worlds, in which the aliens invade from space, and those who prefer the Steven SpielbergTom Cruise mashup, with the alien invasion coming from beneath the planet’s surface. Others suggest the sounds come from HAARP, a U.S.-run project out of Alaska that studies the ionosphere. While the government wants you to think HAARP stands for High Frequency Acitve Auroral Research Program, in reality, it is more accurately de-anagrammed as the Human-Alien Attempted Relationship Program. The government isn’t fooling anybody. For those of you who aren’t conspiracy theorists, or truthers as they like to be called now, open your eyes. The world is crumbling all around us.

What are the strange sounds being heard around the world? Quite simply, those sounds are the heavens signalling the end of the world. I was told today that something in the Bible says that the sky will trumpet and we’ll all die in eternal fire. Or something along those lines. So after hearing the noises coming from the skies in Alberta, the Czech Republic and other locations around the world, I can only say that I’m absolutely afraid for my life. It’s completely clear to me that there is only one possible answer, and that is that our world is about to end. After all, people have been calling for the end of the world a lot lately, and one of them is bound to be right one of these days. Remember when it was all going to end last May? Ya, that was super frightening. I was scared to leave my house for days. And then May passed and I believed, once again, that everything was great and resumed my life. And then there was all that news about the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world. And for awhile, I really believed that was true. I made sure not to book events into 2013, because I knew that was pointless. But then I went to Mexico with my family, and the Mayans in the village we visited assured me that their calendar didn’t actually predict the end of the world, and just suggested the beginning of a new cycle. So I was relieved that everything was going to be OK. But now, now we have mystery sounds coming out of the sky. There’s no calendar to predict that. And as far as I know, no religious leader stepped forward previous to the noises and claimed that revelation is upon us. So clearly these noises must be some sort of divine sign, and while I’m not exactly religious, I know when to listen to sounds that are obviously sent to us to let humankind know that the end is near. With all that in mind, if anyone would like to find me, I’ll be hiding out in a bunker at a top-secret, undisclosed location. Honestly.

New York police discontinue counterterrorism video NATIONAL OTTAWA - A historic wampum belt is being used today for the first time in centuries to help retie the relationship between First Nations and the Crown. Aboriginal leaders from Ontario have brought the replica of the 1764 Treaty of Niagara belt with them to Ottawa for a historic summit with the prime minister. Sewn from 10,076 purple and silver shells, it symbolizes the link forged between First Nations and the Crown in the year following the 1763 Royal Proclamation that defined the relationship between the two sides. It’s those historic ties that chiefs across the country want to draw on in the one-day meeting that’s billed as an opportunity to reset that relationship. *** OTTAWA - The New Democrats are calling on Tony Clement to turn
himself in to the police after disclosing documents which they say show that he lied and covered up his role in dispensing a $50-million G8 “slush fund” in 2010. New Democrat MP Charlie Angus issued the call Monday based on new documents in which a senior federal bureaucrat contradicts Clement’s insistence that he was not involved in choosing which projects to spruce up his riding would get funding. “He told the Canadian people, ‘If anybody could ever prove that I would do that, I’d turn myself over to the cops.’ Well, Tony, what about it?” Angus told a news conference. “It’s clear that a cover-up happened and the auditor general was misled.” *** TO R O N TO - T h e omnibus federal crime bill will cost Ontario more than $1 billion in increased
police and court costs, the province’s Liberal government said Monday as it demanded Ottawa pick up the tab. Bill C-10 creates new mandatory minimum sentences, increases maximum sentences for some crimes, limits the use of conditional sentences such as house arrest and makes it harder to get a pardon. Ontario faces “the very real possibility” of having to build a new 1,000-bed jail, at a cost of $900 million, to house the extra prisoners who will be arrested and sentenced under Bill C-10, said Correctional Services Minister Madeleine Meilleur. INTERNATIONAL RABAT, Morocco A 27-year-old Moroccan who set himself on fire to protest his unemployment died from his burns Tuesday in a Casablanca hospital, his wife said.
Abdelwahab Zaydoun was part of a group of unemployed graduates who occupied an Education Ministry building in Rabat, the Moroccan capital, to protest their unemployment and threatened to set themselves fire when police didn’t let supporters deliver them food. Once rare, self-immolation has become a tactic of protest across North Africa ever since a vegetable seller in Tunisia set himself on fire in December 2010, setting off an uprising that toppled the government. *** NEW YORK, N.Y. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says police used terrible judgment when they showed a film about Muslims during counterterrorism training seminars. Bloomberg said Tuesday that police had stopped showing the movie, “The
Third Jihad.” It discusses extremists and their plans for establishing an Islamic regime. Police documents obtained by a think-tank at New York University say the movie was shown on a continuous loop while officers were signing in for counterterrorism training in late 2010. Nearly 1,500 officers may have seen the movie. Police originally said only a few officers had seen it. Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne says that the movie was not approved for training courses and that the decision to play it was made by a sergeant. He said she had been reprimanded. *** VIENNA - Kosovo moved a step closer to full control of its own affairs Tuesday, with a multinational organization announcing it will end its mandate this year pend-
ing continued progress on democratization and human rights. The mandate of the International Civilian Office, which operates under the 25-nation International Steering Group, was to run out this year. But an ISG announcement was the first official confirmation the ICO plans to end the work in 2012, amid expectations that Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian majority government will enact remaining legislation meant to fully guarantee and strengthen its democratic institutions and human rights. Kosovo declared independence in February 2008 after almost 10 years under a U.N. umbrella, and following a devastating conflict pitting its independence-seeking ethnic Albanian majority against Serbs who fought to maintain its status as a Serbian province.

Playoff races shaping up in Big Six A few races for position heading into the playoffs are heating up in the Big Six Hockey League, with the final regular season games slated for next weekend. With three games left in the season, the Bienfait Coalers continue to hold onto first place, while forward Brennan Wrigley is a shoo-in to end the season as the league’s scoring leader with 22 goals and 40 points in 16 games this year. Chasing him from 10 points back are Jarvis Ducharme of the Redvers Rockets and the Arcola-
Kisbey Combines’ Troy Miller. Last Friday the Coalers hosted the third-place Carlyle Cougars, dominating the opponent 9-2. On Tuesday they were home to the Carnduff Red Devils who wallow at the bottom of the league with a 1-14 record and are in position to be the lone team to miss the playoffs this year. One of the biggest battles going on right now is the one for eighth spot which will go to either Carnduff or the Lampman Imperials who both have a 2-15 record thus far.
Third place in the league is a tight race between Carlyle (9-7-1), Redvers (9-8-1) and Wawota (10-5-0). The Flyers may have the best chance at third with games in hand. On Tuesday night, they beat Carlyle 7-4 to jump into third one point ahead of both the Cougars and Rockets. From third to seventh, the matchups are so tight, even the Midale Mustangs, who are just five points back of third with some games in hand have an opportunity to make a jump in the standings in the last two weeks of the
season. The Mustangs won a 3-2 contest on Jan. 20 against the Oxbow Huskies who sit ahead of them in sixth place. The Flyers handed the Imperials an 8-2 defeat that same night. The Huskies were on a two-game winless slide after being the first team to knock off the Coalers in regulation this season, and continued the negative streak with a loss to Redvers 3-2 last Saturday. On Tuesday night they went on the road to face Arcola, suffering a 11-2 defeat at the hands of the second-place team. That same night, the Coalers also improved their record with a 5-0 win over the Red Devils in Bienfait. Jackson Walliser recorded the shutout for the Coalers, seeing his goals-against average dip below 2 to 1.99, allowing just 28 goals in 14 games this season. Lampman won their second game of the season to jump into a commanding eighth spot with an 8-6 win over Redvers on Sunday, as Arcola downed Carlyle with a 7-6 overtime victory and Wawota bested Carnduff 7-1 that same night. Big Six teams had a
good start to their provincial quarterfinal series. Arcola beat Southey 6-3 in the first game of their series, while Bienfait won in a commanding 8-1 gameone romp over Avonlea. Game two is in Avonlea
on Sunday. Arcola hosts Southey for game two on Feb. 5. Carlyle also won their opening game against Odessa-Vibank 7-3. Game two is Sunday, with Carlyle on the road.

St. Louis fans not singing the blues The 2011-12 National Hockey League season will be remembered long-term for the arrival of the Jets in Winnipeg and the ongoing concussion problems of superstar Sidney Crosby, but the biggest on-ice story has to be the performance of the St. Louis Blues. The NHL awards people may as well give the coach-of-the-year trophy to Ken Hitchcock right now because he took over the Blues in November when they had a 6-7 record and now they’re battling it out with the powerful Bruins, Red Wings, Rangers, Black Hawks and Canucks for No. 1 overall. And while plaudits are being tossed Hitchcock’s way for his behind-thebench miracles, save some for goalie Brian Elliott, who is the undisputed feel-good personal story of the 201112 campaign. Elliott, the poster boy for NHL “journeymen”, was brought in supposedly to play a handful of games in relief of No. 1 goalie Jaroslav Halak. Instead, he has equally shared net duties with Halak and the
pair has turned into a combination of Terry Sawchuk, Jacques Plante, Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy. It’s a nice chickenand-egg situation for the Blues. Which came first? Hitchcock’s coaching style, with its emphasis on defence that led to sensational puck-saving numbers for Elliott and Halak? Or was it the goaltenders’ sudden reincarnation of Mr. Zero, Frankie Brimsek, who has turned Hitchcock into the NHL’s 2012 genius? Hitchcock’s style of play has the Blues surrendering the fewest shots per game, so it’s probably a combination of both. Since becoming the every-other-game goalie for the Blues, Elliott - whose numbers with Ottawa and Colorado last year bordered on lousy - has posted a 155-1 record and a 1.68 goalsagainst-average. Halak hasn’t been too bad either, with an average in the 2.00 range. He got off to a slow start, partially leading to Payne’s demise, but went undefeated during a recent 13-game surge (10-0-3) that helped vault the Blues
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist into the league-leading stratosphere. The solid play of the two goaltenders, Hitchcock’s coaching approach, and the Alex Pietrangeloled defence have been key components to the Blues surge that has fans reminding themselves that in hockey, the general rule of thumb is that “defence wins championships.” We’ll see in May and June whether that mantra holds true. • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Elin Nordegren, the former Mrs. Tiger Woods, is having her $12 million Florida mansion torn down to have a new place built. The decision has been made: you are engaged! Sure enough, you will soon be thinking about your wedding invitations, but it is worthwhile to publish an announcement of your engagement with a bit of pomp and circumstance. It is a momentous occasion, one worth celebrating! Family members, neighbours, colleagues, long-lost acquaintances: they might not all make it on to your wedding invitation list, but they will still want to hear the news of your engagement. If the bride and groom have always lived in the same area all their lives, the local newspaper is the perfect media. However, if people you know are scattered all across the country, the national paper could perhaps be a good place to put your wedding announcement as well. It is usually the parents of the bride and groom who take care of this, but there’s nothing to stop the happy couple from taking care of it themselves. The text should include the names of the bride- and groom-to-be, the names of the parents of the couple, and, if it’s suitable, a few words about the circumstances of the proposal. Don’t forget to submit a photo of the happy couple!
The current trend is to wear brightly coloured shoes, such as red, orange, turquoise, or yellow! Prada, you’ll be able to wear them proudly, long after your
wedding day is just a happy memory.
One thing to remember about this trend is that the days of matching shoes to cummerbunds are past: don’t choose shoes that match the colour of your groom’s tie or your reception tablecloths. It may seem like a good idea initially, but you will end up looking rather ridiculous. And unless you have a nice tan already, be sure to wear top-quality sheer stockings to even out the skin tone of your legs. When you slip off your garter at the reception, you won’t want to be shy about showing some leg!

Every girl knows that shoes give the perfect finishing touch to an outfit, whether it’s for business, a movie night, or her wedding. Finding the right shade to match a bridal gown can be a difficult one, especially as brides continue to move away from traditional whites. The trend towards colour began about five years ago with metallic tones, especially gold or silver, both of which lend a glamorous touch to any dress. Golden shoes are perfect with gowns ranging from ivory to cream, while silver is gorgeous with pure whites and bluish whites. In 2012, the trend has gone even further. Striking contrasts are in, as brides wear red, orange, turquoise, or yellow! These shoes can be found in bridal boutiques as well as in regular shoe shops. If you find yours in a designer line-up, such as Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, or

Radiant makeup for your special day If wedding bells will soon be ringing for you and your beloved, here are a few practical makeup tips to help you look radiant on your big day.
If you have the means, entrust your makeup to an aesthetician that you know and trust. If you don’t know one, ask around for recommendations. Make

an appointment several weeks before the wedding for a trial makeup session. You will be able to try a couple of looks, such as natural, glamorous, or dramatic, and the aesthetician will better know which kinds of products will suit you best on the big day. If you’re good at doing your own makeup and
prefer to do it yourself, don’t forget that you should still do a practice run before the big event. Keep in mind that your makeup for the wedding day is likely going to be different from what you wear to the office. Above all, you’ll want to make sure you choose products that will help you look
fresh all day long. For your wedding day makeup, prepare your skin by applying a good moisturizer and then the makeup base. That will allow it to last longer and will also give it a better finish. Choose a good quality foundation that is not orangey and that blends perfectly with the colour of your skin. Opt for waterproof mascara. It will be useful if your dad’s speech brings
tears to your eyes! And for a seductive pout that lasts all evening, choose a long-lasting lipstick and touch it up throughout the day with a quick swipe of lip gloss. A final touch: a few sprays of makeup fixative to keep you from looking wilted and smudged as you meet and greet all day. The setting spray holds foundation and eye makeup in place while erasing any powdery effect.

Wedding activities for the kids Is there going to be a crowd of children at your wedding? Here are a few entertainment tips to keep them amused during the reception; their parents will appreciate the opportunity to socialize and the kids will remember the event as a success. To occupy younger children before the meal, you could organize a visit from a magician or a clown, who can perform a colourful routine lasting around thirty minutes. If your reception hall will allow it, you could rent an inflatable castle or organize a thematic treasure hunt with a teenaged guest to facilitate it. Inside the hall, set up an activity table with bottles of bubble-blowing liquid, arts and crafts supplies, and board
games. You might even hire an artist to do face-painting. At the very least, it’s a good idea to reserve an area especially for the kids, where their high energy levels won’t bother the other guests and where they can be free from pressures to sit still and be quiet. If you do have a kids’ table, cover it with a paper tablecloth on which they can doodle to their heart’s content while they wait for their meals. Don’t forget to inquire with your caterer if their menu includes a children’s plate. Then, at the end of the meal, distribute surprise bags filled with candies and small dollar-store games or gadgets that will keep them entertained.

The flower girl Whether your wedding is going to take the traditional or modern and minimalist route, you can honour a young friend, sister, niece, or cousin by asking her to be your flower girl. If you’re planning on a big wedding party, with several bridesmaids and groomsmen, a flower girl is a lovely inclusion. If you want to keep the pomp to a minimum, having just one little flower girl to stand with you is a great strategy to avoid disappointing adult women friends! The flower girl is usually placed at the head of the procession and leads the bride down the aisle towards her future husband. Because all eyes will be riveted on this little person, special thought should be given to her outfit. Flower girl dresses can be found in most department stores and in wedding dress bou-
tiques. A frilly and white little ball gown will make your flower girl feel like a princess for a day — you
can bet that she’ll have a hard time waiting for the big day to finally arrive! You might prefer to
let your flower girl choose her own outfit or you may want to provide one that is inspired by your own gown. Whatever the

option is to ask her to carry a basket of flower petals, which she will scatter on the floor as she walks down the aisle.

The perfect gift for the couple Choosing a wedding gift is not always an easy task. You might not know the couple well, which means you don’t really know their tastes or style, and you might not be sure how much money to spend. A reasonable solution is to offer a gift certificate from a department or specialty store, or even cash. This kind of gift allows the couple to choose exactly what they need. Alternatively, you could offer them an item from a bridal registry at a department store. You can ask the bride or groom where they’re registered or ask at a store if the couple has set one up. If you’re close to the bride or groom, you might consider a more intimate gift. A pair of him-and-her spa passes makes a nice outing for the couple as wedding prep stress begins to build, or you could offer a gift certificate for an evening out at a chic restaurant for when they return from their honeymoon. Wedding guests often wonder how much they should spend on a gift. If your budget is limited,

A bun, a braid, or curls? A bride’s hairstyle is essential to the look she wishes to create for her wedding day. Choosing among this year’s trends is one way to find the perfect style. The classic bun is a popular choice, especially because it fits with the retro chic trend. In 2012 we will see lots of elegant buns and twists, just like Audrey Hepburn wore. Brides with fine hair can opt for a cut and style, with a square cut or a plunging bob. If they want to keep their hair long, extensions are ideal for filling out some volume. Braids are also making a comeback, but, for a more natural look, they should be soft and loose, with a few locks falling

before creating a hairstyle with a part. If the bride has a round face, a middle part will not be flattering; in-
versely, thin, longer faces are particularly suited to a middle part. Choose an accessory to add a more personal touch to a hairstyle. Tiaras or headbands are lovely; some wrap partially or completely around the head and come decorated with flower and leaf patterns, curves, arabesques, pearls, or Swarovski crystals. Such jewels are as perfect in loose hair as they are with loose braids or buns. With the help of your hairdresser, you can create the hairstyle you’ve always dreamed of. Be sure to make an appointment well ahead of your wedding day for a consultation about options and styles.

I do... want a “green” wedding These days everyone is thinking about the environment, even when it comes to planning a wedding. Here are a few suggestions for an eco-friendly day. For the bride’s bouquet choose local wild flowers, such as irises, daisies, or lavender. For boutineers and corsages, some leafy greenery will add a touch of originality to your bridal procession and advertise your commitment to being green. You could also replace the traditional table centrepieces with displays of freshly picked apples from a neighbouring orchard — perfect if you’re getting married in September. Have your invitations printed on FSC-certified 100% recycled paper. For your thank-you cards, choose stationery made from paper
in which wild flower are embedded; this kind of paper is available in many garden centres. For your ceremony and reception, choose locations that are easily accessible in order to cut down on car engine emissions. Brides who love their mother’s or grandmother’s wedding gowns can have them altered by a seamstress. Or, rather than buying a ready-to-wear dress made in China, brides can have the design of their choice sewed by a local dressmaker. Buying a beautiful, recycled wedding band in gold or silver is another great way to be green. The rings can be personalized in the same way as traditional rings. Wedding rings that belonged to family members are also a meaningful option.

Flowers: a key element of any wedding In many people’s minds, a successful wedding event often rests on the choice of flowers. The most beautiful of Mother Nature’s offerings, they are essential for setting the tone of the day. The trend in 2012 is towards smaller
bouquets and less imposing floral centrepieces on the tables. Vases are appearing in all shapes, sizes, and materials: ceramic, zinc, glass, and stoneware, for example. Two timeless favourites, the rose and the
orchid, adapt perfectly to all these different vases. Just imagine the elegant yet contemporary look these flowers have when arranged in a huge glass vase on a guest-book table or beside an altar.
The trend in bouquets is turning towards natural simplicity rather than extravagance. White, cream, and ivory flowers form the base, with lots of greenery to set them off. Branches and leaves matched to dif-
ferent types of flowers are used to top off a glorious monochrome bouquet. Regardless of the colours, tradition still rules the size of a bouquet. Choose a simple bouquet if your outfit is fairly ornate. If your gown is simple, exoticism and creativity can run wild. Round bou-
Page 17
quets go well with tapered dresses, and cascading bouquets are perfect for gowns with trains. Lastly, one small hint to help you avoid a truly outdated effect: don’t try to match the colour of the flowers with the groom’s outfit or with the bridesmaid’s dresses.

Top-ranked gymnast won’t compete for Canada in London NATIONAL SALT LAKE CITY Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke died Jan. 19, nine days after crashing at the bottom of the superpipe during a training run in Utah. Burke was 29. She was injured Jan. 10 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort. Tests revealed Burke sustained “irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest,” according to a statement released by Burke’s publicist. A four-time Winter X Games champion, Burke crashed on the same halfpipe where snowboarder Kevin Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury during a training accident on Dec. 31, 2009. As a result of her fall, Burke tore her vertebral artery, which led to severe bleeding on the brain, causing her to go into cardiac arrest on the scene, where CPR was performed, according to the statement by publicist Nicole Wool. *** C A L G A RY - T h e Calgary Stampeders released franchise rushing
leader Joffrey Reynolds on Monday. John Hufnagel, the Stampeders head coach and GM, said the club made the move after being unable to work out a trade involving the veteran tailback. The 32-year-old Reynolds became expendable with the emergence of Canadian Jon Cornish, who replaced Reynolds in Calgary’s starting lineup last season. Reynolds spent eight seasons with the Stampeders, rushing for 9,213 yards and 53 TDs while registering 226 catches for 2,036 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed for 477 yards last season, the first time since his rookie year in 2004 that he didn’t reach the 1,000-yard mark. *** Gymnastics Canada has told the top-ranked rhythmic gymnast in the country she won’t be added to the team that is going to the London Olympics. President Jean-Paul Caron says after a review, it was decided the only way Mariam Chamilova can go is if one athlete from the six-member group is replaced. There has been no indication that such a move is in the works.
Chamilova’s mother Naida says she will take the issue to the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada. Acting on the advice of coaches, Chamilova declined her spot in the group more than a year ago to continue to compete as an individual. She was told she could qualify again later, then learned a second qualification round had been cancelled. INTERNATIONAL G E N E VA - S o u t h African marathon runner Gert Thys has won his doping case, nearly six years after testing positive for a steroid when winning the Seoul International Marathon. The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the World Anti-Doping Agency’s appeal to clear Thys after South African authorities failed to hear his case. The CAS panel said, in a ruling published this week, it was “undisputed” that Thys tested positive for norandrosterone after winning his third Seoul title in 2006. But it agreed with WADA that “Mr. Thys’s due process rights are seemingly being
ignored” in South Africa. The South African athletics federation had banned Thys for two years and seven months in December 2008. CAS cleared Thys in 2009 because of laboratory errors handling the athlete’s urine samples in South Korea. *** ARLINGTON, Texas - Yu Darvish is coming to America to pitch. Japan’s best pitcher and the Texas Rangers agreed before Wednesday’s deadline to a US$60 million, six-year contract. In addition to the salary, the Rangers will pay a posting fee of $51,703,411 to the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan’s Pacific League. The deal came at the end of a 30-day negotiating window that began Dec. 19 when the Rangers’ bid to negotiate with the pitcher was accepted. *** MELBOURNE, Australia - Maria Sharapova’s shriek when she hits the ball is “pretty annoying” and “just too loud,” according to one of her rivals. No. 8-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska spoke out Tuesday at the Australian Open after her
loss to Victoria Azarenka, whose high-pitched hoot has also attracted plenty of criticism. The WTA, which runs the tour, said it is looking at ways to reduce grunting. Currently, the umpire can penalize a player for “a deliberate act” of hindrance but the rule is rarely enforced
when it comes to grunting. During Azarenka’s matches in Melbourne, some people in the crowd have been mimicking the unusual sound she makes. Host broadcaster Channel 7 has what it calls a “Whoo! Meter,” which registered the sound at 91.4 decibels on Tuesday.

Concern over the closing of Safeway in Estevan prompted support in keeping the store running from people like Estevan Mayor Bernie Collins. Employees of the store even said they would accept a pay decrease if it meant keeping the store afloat. Each week the Southeast Trader Express shares recent stories from the community but we’ll also give you a look into the past. If you have a photo you think readers of the Southeast Trader Express would find interesting please submit it to Jordan Baker at jbaker@estvanmercury.ca.
Sam tries to find out who fathered her baby
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Katie confronted Bill about paying off the doctor to falsify Steffy’s MRI results. Hope told Thomas that they were through. Later, Hope made a shocking announcement about her fashion line to the press but later changed her mind. Bill went to great lengths to try to keep Katie from going to the press about what happened in Mexico. Steffy steadfastly denied to Liam that she knew anything about Bill’s deception and later gave Bill a piece of her mind. Hope and Liam shared an emotional reunion after months of lies and schemes. Steffy told her family about her real prognosis. Wait to See: Bill atones for his sins. Brooke and Taylor see themselves in their daughters. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Chad and Abigail received similar offers but had very different reactions. Jenni-
fer and Daniel shared a tearful goodbye. Tensions arose as Carrie and Austin couldn’t agree on a date night. Rafe was none-too-pleased with Sami’s job as a mole. Nicole bribed Will with an inside job of her own. Bo and Hope turned to Doug and Julie for advice. Austin had a surprisingly fun lunch date. Marlena took Jack to a therapy session to deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder. Little Sydney’s birthday party set the stage for Abe to get even with EJ, Will to antagonize his mother, and Nicole to fawn over her former daughter. Abigail had an unusual fantasy. Wait to See: Will’s shocking bombshell affects everyone in Salem. Hope comes to a decision about Alice’s secret. GENERAL HOSPITAL Sam visited the doctor hoping to find out who was the father of her baby -- Jason or Franco. Patrick confronted Robin about her HIV status. Michael confided in Sam about the gun he purchased. Tracy was upset when Luke didn’t try to stop her wedding to Anthony. Matt was caught off-guard when he found Spinelli making himself comfortable as Maxie’s room-
mate. Alexis wasn’t sure she was ready to be a grandmother. The war between Sonny and the Zaccharas began to escalate. Sonny and Kate discussed rebuilding their favorite hometown restaurant. Wait to See: Olivia learns more about Steve’s past with Maggie. Alexis and Diane toy with Coleman. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Victor explained to Nikki that he pushed her away for her own good. Adam was skeptical when Sharon tried to warn him about Victor. Michael told Victor thatAdam didn’t fall for his scam and that Beauty of Nature was sold to an unknown company. Ronan played the video of Nikki killing Diane in self-defense. He then had all the parties involved in covering up the evidence arrested for obstruction of justice. Genevieve received a phone call informing her that she was the new owner of Beauty of Nature. Jeff returned to Genoa City claiming he had amnesia. Wait to See: Patty seeks revenge at Jack and Genevieve’s wedding. Ricky puts his career before his family. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

How to prevent pipes from freezing
Q: Last winter, a couple of pipes in my basement burst. The plumber said that they froze and burst. How can I prevent this from happening again? -- Darla G., Dothan, Ala. A: Frozen pipes, as you unfortunately discovered, are a serious problem that quickly can become costly, especially if flooding occurs and damages furniture and other items. Before talking about prevention, let’s quickly look at emergency measures. When the worst occurs -- a burst pipe -- the water feed to the pipe must be shut off immediately in order to prevent flooding, and then a plumber contacted to fix the problem as soon as possible. Of course, this problem tends to occur at the worst possible times and in the worst way -- the first prolonged cold snap of the year, when no one wants to
be wading through freezing water to the shutoff valve. Or, when homeowners are on vacation and flooding occurs for hours ... or days. (This happened to me several years ago: My upstairs neighbor’s pipes burst, and the water flooded my condo.) To prevent this problem, take steps to keep the temperature around those pipes above freezing. Pipes in an uninsulated basement should be wrapped in pipe insulation (available at the hardware or home-improvement store). Outdoor spigots should have the water flow to them turned off during the coldest months, and then be drained; if you can’t turn off the water, purchase insulated spigot covers. During freezing weather, turn on the coldwater tap in the highest and lowest parts of your house, as well as the outdoor spigot. Keep it at a thin trickle or fast drip. Check on all of your pipe runs throughout the freezing period. Run your hand along the pipes when you can. If you feel a spot
CASH BACK
that’s significantly colder than the rest of the run, there’s a good chance that water is freezing in that spot. If you see frost or condensation on a section of a pipe, or if you see a bulge in the pipe run, those also are telltale signs. Immediately wrap the freezing pipe in a towel soaked in near-boiling water. Pour hot water over the towel periodically to keep it warm. If a bulge in the pipe occurs, or you can’t thaw it, contact a plumber immediately to take additional measures to save the pipe.

Spice Up Your Slow Cooker
Adding spices, especially chilies and hot pepper, to your diet has many health benefits. Hot, spicy foods stimulate circulation. Capsicum peppers, both sweet and hot, contain large amounts of vitamin C -- two and a half times more vitamin C than oranges, on average. Capsicum peppers also are a good source of vitamin A, potassium and contain some iron and protein. At the same time, they are very low in fat and calories -- just 22 calories in three and a half ounces. Various studies have shown that adding spices to your food helps to curb hunger, boost brainpower, improve your mood and strengthen and help to repair muscles. Adding hot sauce to your morning eggs or a veggie smoothie is a great way to start the day! This recipe for Spicy Slow Cooked Tenderloins showcases jalapenos and dried peppers in a delicious new way. Heat up your slow cooker and improve your health by eating more spicy foods this year! S P I C Y S L O WCOOKEDTENDERLOINS
Use rubber gloves or hold the peppers in a paper towel or in plastic wrap when preparing them. If you’ve touched a hot pepper, wash your hands thoroughly and be careful not to touch your eyes, mouth, nose or other sensitive tissues, including those of the pelvic region. If you should get capsaicin on sensitive tissues, flush quickly with lots of water to reduce the irritation. 1 (20 ounce) turkey or pork tenderloin 2 tablespoons yellow or stone-ground mustard 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1 l a rg e j a l a p e n o , diced 1 large yellow onion, peeled and diced 2 garlic cloves, smashed and diced 4 cups water or chicken broth, or a mixture of both 1/2 cup nonfat Greek yogurt 1. Rub 1 1/2 tablespoons of the mustard on the tenderloin. In a small bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon of poultry seasoning, 1 teaspoon
of the salt and pepper, and the cayenne pepper. Sprinkle all sides of the tenderloin with the spice mixture, pressing firmly to adhere spices to the meat. Marinade the seasoned tenderloin in a resealable bag overnight, if desired, or continue with recipe as directed. 2. In a 3 1/2 to 5 quart slow cooker, combine apple cider, jalapeno, onion, garlic and water or broth, stirring to combine. Place tenderloin in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for at least 7 hours. 3. When cooking is completed, remove tenderloin and shred with forks in bowl. Scoop out all onions, garlic and peppers and combine the vegetables and remaining 1/2 tablespoon mustard, 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper, and 1 cup of
cooking liquid with the yogurt. Mix the shredded meat with the sauce and serve over whole-wheat pasta, use as a sandwich filling or in a baked potato. Serves 4. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, a culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks, including the new “The Kitchen Diva Cooks!”.
