the best just got a whole lot better. Formerly of Estevan, Rob Olson was diagnosed with a rare lymphoma. Co-workers are now raising funds to help cover costs for potential treatment in Houston.

Co-workers rally around Olson after diagnosis A former Estevan man is fighting for his future. This past summer Rob Olson, now of Rabbit Lake, was diagnosed with a rare lymphoma in his intestine. In the fall, he learned the cancer had spread to his bladder, complicating chemotherapy treatments. The 35-year-old is now on his third type of chemotherapy at the Royal University Hospital (RUH) in Saskatoon, which is designed to attack the cancer in both locations. “He wasn’t feeling very well in late July, and he was actually hospitalized, and it was in early August when they had the cancer diagnosis,” said co-worker Chris Hamel, speaking about when the diagnosis was made. Told by doctors the odds aren’t in his favour with that treatment, Olson has investigated the possibility of travelling to Houston to seek further treatment at one of the best cancer centres in the world. Olson’s Cameco co-workers are now raising funds to help cover the cost of the second opinion he could receive at the centre in Houston. The group is aiming to raise $10,000, which will cover Olson’s initial consultation in Houston. There is, however, still hope that treatments in Saskatoon will send Olson’s cancer into remission, and if he doesn’t need to seek further options in the U.S., all the money raised will be donated to lymphoma research, the cancer centre and the hematology/oncology ward at RUH. “Rob has stated that any of the excess funds, if he doesn’t need them, then he would donate them,” said Hamel, who is among the co-workers spearheading the fundraisers for Olson. “Here’s a guy who needs some help. It’s just the right thing to do,” said Hamel. “It could be anyone out there, and we’re just lucky enough that we have a network of

people here at work who we can call on. Rob’s a great guy, and we can all get together to help him out.” The fundraising supper held on Tuesday at the Sutherland Bar in Saskatoon had 250 tickets for sale. The event, called Rob Gets Healthy, had a number of draws and silent auction items available to be won. Hamel has known Olson for about 10 years, and noted they no longer work at the same site, as Olson moved on to work at one of Cameco’s mining operations. While Olson and his friends and family are hopeful the treatment he is receiving will work, Hamel said the fundraising will allow for a safety net if he needs to seek treatment elsewhere. “If Rob does need to go to Houston to seek treatments beyond what they’re capable of doing here at the cancer centre in Saskatoon, we want to have that safety net in place for him. If he needs that option, it’s there and he can use it.” In a release sent to the Mercury, Olson said “My case is so rare that there could be a chance they see more in Houston. I want to know that I gave my best to find out if there was a way to beat this thing.” “I understand that he was in the hospital over the holidays with the treatment,” said Hamel of Olson’s current condition. “Every little bit helps. Just in chatting with family members, I understand Rob is just flabbergasted by the response of people stepping up to help him. I’ve talked to several of his family members and everyone is really grateful for everything that we’re doing.” Those who would like to support Olson may contact Hamel at 306-956-6348. For the reality television buffs out there, there is no bigger spectacle, no bigger plummet into human misery and insanity than what is available on The Bachelor. It’s rare that I dip my toe into the frothy waters of reality TV, but someone has convinced me to pay a little bit of attention to this lowest-of-lows serials. One apparently woefully undateable man must choose one of 27 equally undateable women to marry him. He doesn’t even get much time to make what for most people is a very serious and life changing decision. In this case, the show asks its contestants to ignore how things work in the real world, like maybe living together for a few years before marriage is a consideration, because reality has no business being on television that supposes to be real. The show demands that the bachelor approach his personal relationships in a trivial and meaningless way because that is what entertains America and a few lonely people in Canada. While watching the show, I also noticed the commercials between the drama and realized how accurately they demonstrate the demographics of actual viewers. Based on the commercials, it became clear they were selling things for women who have houses

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers full of cats and cheap, sugary alcohol marketed toward sorority sisters. This was the company I found myself in while tuning in. Back to the meat of the show, this poor sap has to pick between a select group of women who appear to be some of the worst people in the western hemisphere. Pageant girls, nose jobs and dog lovers make up the cast of unruly characters on this horrifyingly engaging program. And it is engaging, because it allows us to pass incredibly critical judgment on these people. One woman has a great dress but a horrible personality. Another has way too much makeup and a horrible personality. Another woman seems clinically insane and has a horrible personality. The bachelor himself talked about how difficult the decisions he must make are, and it seems at first glance that he’s talking about choosing between beautiful women who clearly have so much to offer.

Ultimately though, he has to wade through a tidal wave of crazy young women who crave attention and desire a moment in the spotlight more than they desire a meaningful relationship with some guy they only get a month or two to become familiar with. It sounds like I’m only judging the women as though the bachelor has no part to play in this story for the lovelorn and obsessive. There are just so many of them and when we look at the show, it’s the women who are open to judgment and the women who are open to criticism. It’s the lone man’s job to cut from 27 women to one, and with that set up, we as the viewer, save our judgments for the ladies of the show. In my discussions with my viewing partner, we only criticized the women, pointing out their flaws, as well as the very few things we accepted, while leaving very little comment or critique of our bachelor. I’ve promised my viewership for the next couple of weeks. I will tolerate watching people who don’t provide many redeeming qualities in an effort to figure out just what these contestants hope to get from the show. It may be exposure, and it may be money, but it certainly has nothing to do with what the show professes to offer.

Remembering 90 years of the Producer I suppose it’s unusual for a writer in one publication to take some time to tip the old chapeau to another publication, but in this case I just have to congratulate the Western Producer, which is celebrating 90 years this year. Growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan in an area long before the Internet became popular, all right I’m old enough the ‘Net wasn’t even a rumour when I was a kid, the arrival of newspapers were a highlight of the week. It was a big deal to head to the rural mailboxes to pick up the mail since the newspapers were our avenue to seeing the rest of the world. Yes, we had a television, but I was a young teen before the black and white box provided more than CBC, and even then it was a twochannel world. In terms of radio, Melfort’s then CJVR and CKBI out of Prince Albert, and of course CBC, were about it. So newspapers were an important source of information. And while dad subscribed to a number of publications, Grainews, Country Guide, Farm Light & Power among them, the Western Producer was the one that held our interest most. I admit I never saw the appeal of studying every classified ad in earnest over a cup of coffee, but I can tell you both my grandfather and father were in-depth readers of the ads in the Western Producer. I dove into the articles on farming. It was a way for a young mind to learn about more than raising pigs and growing barley to feed those animals. The Western Producer gave me an insight

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist into the development of canola, and has since kept me abreast of what has happened over the years, which has led to the crop now being the key economic generator for grains and oilseed producers across most of the Prairies. Through its articles, farmers have learned about pulse crops and more importantly, about the large and diverse markets for a range of crops that when I was young were barely considered. My dad occasionally grew some field peas, usually in combination in the same field with barley. The rationale was that the peas, which were thought to grow so low to the ground as to be difficult to harvest on their own, would actually climb the barley stem. This made harvesting easier and the barley and pea mix was great pig feed. The Western Producer showed a more dramatic market. The weekly newspaper also helped me learn about the importation of exotic beef breeds from Europe. In my youngest days, beef cattle in Canada were generally Hereford, Aberdeen Angus or Shorthorn. They were small cattle and frankly, behind the times in terms of a changing beef market. The arrival of Charolais, Simmental,

Limousin and a couple of dozen more breeds fundamentally changed the North American beef industry, and the Western Producer helped a pig farmer better understand just how dramatic the change was and why it was necessary. Now, I will state here I also like the publication because through the years they have run quite a number of my articles. I still see that as an achievement, at least the earliest articles when I was cutting my teeth as a journalist because being in its pages meant I was doing something right as a reporter. I’ve been fortunate to appear in literally dozens of publications in several countries over the near three decades in this business, but few made me feel better than when the Producer said yes the first time about 25 years ago. I suppose in appearing in its pages it was sort of the completion of a loop for me. While I had no inkling when I was young that I would end up a journalist, it was my general knowledge of agriculture that helped secure my first writing gig with the Tisdale Recorder. That same interest in farming had the then Enterprise in Yorkton offering me a job, a job that became a long-term career. And in many ways, my general knowledge in farming relates to reading the pages of the Western Producer week after week through the years of my youth and beyond. So congrats Producer on nine decades of serving Prairie farmers well. I, among many, appreciate your efforts and look forward to you serving the sector in the decades ahead.

Shelter program seeing more guests in second year n the middle of its second year, Warm Welcome has found its place in the community as the number of guests at the local homeless shelter increases. Already, trends and growth can be seen as organizers point out it’s giving newcomers looking for work an avenue to use to stick it out a little longer. The Salvation Army’s Lieutenant Brian Bobolo said as the shelter gives people an option in Estevan, some have decided to stay in the city. “We’ve had a couple of people come and because the shelter was there they decided to stay in the community as newcomers,” he said. “Especially now that we’re seven nights a week, they’ve decided to stay in town, stick it out, look for that job and maybe stay at Warm Welcome until they get their own place.” With the shelter only open four nights a week last year, he said the community lost some people who decided against staying through a lack of accommodation. Last year they had 20 unique guests, so with 13 different people staying at the shelter already this winter, the group expects to see more new people this year, in part because people are more likely to hang in a little longer until they can find a place to live. He said the numbers are positive, not because it identifies people who have no permanent place to stay, but because they have an option to stay warm on long winter nights. “It’s really a success story, and people are seeing it as a success story. There’s no reason for the community to

be ashamed that a shelter’s in town,” Bobolo said, calling the shelter just one more sign that Estevan is a great city. “It’s a celebration of community. We’re doing exactly what Estevan has been known to do all these years. This community has always been known to take care of its own. With Warm Welcome, we’re just carrying on that tradition.” The numbers show the necessity of the shelter, with 90 guests staying the night throughout December. That’s 90 total nights that people have been able to stay warm, as 13 individuals have stayed at the shelter. The guests are primarily men, who make up 86 of the 90 visits. The shelter is open every night of the week this winter, set up at the Salvation Army Sunday to Tuesday and at St. Paul’s United Church from Wednesday night to Saturday. The shelter has 48 volunteers, who work at the shelter in different shifts, in the evening as well as overnight. “We’re growing in our sense of community amongst the volunteers. The volunteers are learning a lot about themselves, about the good they have in themselves,” said Bobolo. “And we’re really contributing to that sense of giving that the community has.” He said many of the volunteers are stepping forward because they want to be part of something, and they are able to find purpose through the shelter. “It’s not just about the 13 who have come. It’s about the 48 (volunteers) as well.” Bobolo said they would like more volunteers, so the ones they have aren’t overworked. He said another 30

people would be a big help to the program. Volunteers may choose where they want to commit their time, the night of the week they wish to work and the shift that works best for them. He said they are particularly looking for people to cover the midweek nightshifts from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. “Our volunteer base has certainly grown this year, but we may need the volunteers to double this year. That would be wonderful, and it would certainly make it easier for us to cover all the nights.” Ultimately, the volunteers are helping provide a place for others to stay. The shelter is averaging three people a night through December, but the numbers are only increasing. “Over the last week or two we’ve been noticing we’ve been getting five or six a night,” said Bobolo, who noted they have about two regular guests. “The rest are like two or three nights at a time. Some are just one night, and they change over the course of the year.” Bobolo said the shelter and its volunteers maintain a complete lack of judgment, which would keep people away from the program. “Last year, the community as a whole was trying to understand what homelessness was all about and what a shelter is all about, and this year we’re part of the community make up. “It’s a lot of fun. It’s not a lot of work, and that’s what we’ve been hearing from volunteers. You’re serving coffee and muffins, and you’re having fun.”

On a Mental Level - We will explore thoughts, words and actions you can take to transition smoothly from old habits of betraying yourself to new ones that support and empower you. On an Emotional Level - We will unveil the subconscious beliefs that keep you from attaining your goals and connect you with your own inner wisdom so you don’t need food to escape. You will be learning: • that your cravings are your body’s way to get your attention • that you can be eating thousands of calories a day and be starving at the same time • your “endless” hunger is actually a cry not just for food • how certain foods and food sensitivities may be blocking your goals • how to shift your eating habits so they work for your body • your need to plan for pleasure and relaxation, which is what you’ve been seeking with extra food • befriending your inner critic so that it’s working for you instead of against you • updating old stories that keep you in “victim mode,” so you can make empowered choices • to shift your “self talk” so that your calorie burning metabolism is turned “on” instead of “off” • changing your daily rhythm to one that works with your metabolism instead of against it • that it’s OK to feel good and take care of yourself • all of these and then some Most of all, you will learn how to be comfortable and happy in your own skin. You’ll uncover powerful inner resources that you didn’t know were there. You’ll discover a renewed passion for living and appreciation for your body. You will engage on a journey of learning to trust yourself. Testimonials... I am so excited about what I have learned in this program. Not only was I finally able to lose the weight but I have learned so much about the complexities of my relationship to food and myself. I am feeling better than I have for years and my digestive problems have disappeared. I have more energy and I sleep better plus, I am now able to handle stress in some really new ways. I now understand more about my body and why I had gained all the weight in the first place. For the first time I feel that I will be able to keep my weight off and not gain it right back. I am making better decisions about food and how I care for my body. I would recommend the Body in Balance program to anyone who is looking for a fresh approach to weight loss and life change! A.V. Estevan ~ I was a binge eater! When I was stressed or upset about something I ran straight for the chips, chocolate, pizza and junk food. After a binge I would be angry with myself, frustrated and then punish myself with exercise or starvation for a few days which usually ended in another binge. I thought I was doomed and that there was something really wrong with me. I hated myself and could not look at myself in the mirror. Working with this program taught me that I am not a bad person and the struggles I had with food and my body were changeable. I have learned so much about what is really going on with me and the best part is that I now see myself in a different light and I know which foods I can eat and still lose weight. I have never felt hungry or deprived and I am learning to love myself even with extra pounds that I am still working on. I feel so much better about everything! I still have 25 pounds to go but I am well on my way! L.D. Estevan ~ I have never written a story about myself before so this feels a little weird. I want to share about my experience with the Body in Balance program. I got all my weight off and I feel great. I can also get into a size three from a 12! I was never hungry and I was able to eat normal food the whole way through. I was blown away when I found out it is possible to gain weight on a low calorie diet! I learned that weight loss is not just about food, calories and exercise. I also learned how to care for myself without feeling guilty. I am recommending the Body in Balance program to my sisters and my friends who want to lose weight and learn how to tune in to their body so they can keep it off! C.K. Estevan ~ What has Body in Balance done for me? Well, to me it was the best weight loss program I have ever been on. I hesitate to say “weight loss program” because it is not just a diet. It is a program that takes so many things into account. I no longer have digestive problems and bloating, my constipation disappeared after a short time, I have tons more energy and I feel so calm! I learned how to listen to what my body is telling me and how to care for myself in ways I never thought of before. I used to avoid looking at myself in the mirror because I didn’t like what I saw and I have no problem with that now! I learned that stress can make you fat and that weight can be about more than just food and eating! Wonderful program, would recommend it to anyone. Anyone with stomach and digestion problems could benefit from this program even if you don’t have weight to lose, you learn how to eat better, take better care of yourself and handle stress. Awesome! - S.T. Estevan

LASERTHERAPY

I started laser Therapy at Grassroots for my neck and shoulder. I was in a lot of pain and my hands were going numb in the mornings. I was put on pain pills and I am still waiting to see a specialist so I decided to see if Laser could help me with my pain. I had a couple of treatments for my neck and shoulder and my pain decreased significantly after the first session. I mentioned to one of the therapists that I had ”blown out my stomach” with pain medications, I could hardly eat and I felt sick after eating anything. It constantly felt like I had been punched in the stomach, I was terribly afraid of how much I had damaged my stomach lining. She suggested that we treat my stomach area with the lasers so I hesitantly agreed to give it a try. Well, let me tell you! I was absolutely shocked at how much relief I had from the very first treatment and now I can eat without pain and burning in my stomach and the “punched feeling” is gone. My neck and shoulder pain is almost all gone and my hands are no longer numb every morning. I was stunned at how laser Therapy has helped me! I thank God for this clinic and am so glad they are there!

“The combination of both radio-frequency and optical energy in the elos system technology, is an innovative and exciting development in the treatment of hair removal. With this approach, one may achieve hair reduction and skin rejuvenation while minimizing the applied light energy and its associated undesired side effects.” – Jerome M. TESTIMONIAL I started smoking when I was 16 years old so that means I smoked for half of my life! I was a heavy smoker and my wife and family were very concerned for my health. I was wheezing and coughing and generally felt “unwell”. I knew I smelled bad and had to smoke outside which meant I missed a lot of time with my family. I tried to quit smoking several times and never had any success. My family encouraged me to try the Smoking Cessation program at Grassroots and after thinking about it for a while, I decided that it was a good option for me. I must admit that I was a little nervous and worried that I would have a hard time but to my great relief, the program at Grassroots made quitting smoking not so hard after all. To my surprise, I did not have the usual withdrawal symptoms and felt pretty calm and relaxed. I am sleeping much better and I find it easier to get up in the morning. I am no longer wheezing and coughing. My wife and family are very proud of me ...even though I had to do it for myself! I am no longer a smoker AND with the money I have saved, I was able to purchase a brand new car for my wife!! I would recommend the Smoking Cessation program at Grassroots for anyone who wants to be a non smoker. You will be amazed....like me! - Jeff D. Estevan, SK.
