Cheers to the staff at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home, the care and compassion they show are truly amazing. The staff do things for the people who live there which far exceed what is required of their job. They make what is a difficult time more bearable knowing how well your loved one is being taken care of. Thank You!

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 2014

After Dark season opens at art gallery The 2014 year of live music at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum begins this Friday night, with the first Southern Plains Co-op After Dark concert of the year. Opening the season are three Saskatchewan women who are in the midst of carving their own territory in the music landscape. The EAGM will be welcoming Megan Nash, Saskatoon’s Fern, which features Rachel Fowlie-Neufeld, and Weyburn’s rising star Tenille Arts. Nash and Fern are playing a mini-tour of Saskatchewan. After being booked together at the EAGM they decided to add a few more shows so they are playing Saskatoon on Jan. 29, Moose Jaw on Jan. 30 and Regina on Feb. 1. “I’ve only ever played in Saskatoon myself, so I thought it would be awesome to take advantage of us being free at the same time and do a little mini Saskatchewan tour,” said Fowlie-Neufeld. “I’m really excited. This is my first time touring with Fern,” added Nash in an interview over the phone last week. “Her music, everything I’ve heard so far, I’ve loved, so I’m excited to get the chance to get familiar with her material.” Nash’s first full-length album was released in 2011 entitled Tough Love, and last fall she released a digital EP online called She Said, She Said. “In order to keep it somewhat current online, I always feel like my online presence is a few steps behind what I’m doing, I encourage people to come to my live shows,” she said. “It’s a little bit different than what’s online, I promise.” Going to school in

Mortlach, Nash joked that it would be disingenuous to say she was from a small town, saying, “It gets worse. I’m from a farm near a village near a small town.” She said she grew up mostly with no Internet, “and that makes a big difference in what sort of music you’re exposed to. Growing up, I listened to a lot of my mom’s ’80s CDs. That’s where I got an idea of pop songwriting.” And she sang along to a lot of AM country radio, because that’s all there was to listen to. “Since the first album I feel like I’ve become a little more fearless in my content. I’ve become a bit more honest. My songs are an honest representation of how I feel compared to what I would verbally tell somebody at a coffee shop because I take a lot of time with my songs to think (about) exactly how I feel about something,” she said. “I’ve begun to focus more on gender roles and the idea of being a young female in today’s society. What does that entail and how does that affect your relationships? I’ve embraced the fact that I write from a female perspective.” She said having song critiques and hearing feedback on her work helped guide her views on how she writes and what it is she wants to express in her music. And releasing that music is something she will focus on this year. “If I don’t put out a full-length album this year I’ll be really disappointed in myself,” she laughed. Nash will be heading to the Maritimes to tour Eastern Canada in the spring. Fern released an EP online in 2012, and FowlieNeufeld said they recorded

more music last year, which will be packaged as another EP this spring. “This (concert) is kind of a precursor to that, so I can get some new material out there and then release the EP in a few months,” she said. “I was definitely more organized. The first EP, I had written these songs and had been sitting on them for awhile. I was able to record them at my own pace. I didn’t worry about mixing or adding other instruments or vocals. It was pretty stripped down.” The Spartan recording process was a reflection of the resources she had available. During the most recent recording, the process became a little more layered. “With this new material, we were in the studio, and I was working with an audio engineer and other musicians. It took a lot more planning and more awareness of how I wanted things to sound in the end.” She added that after going through a more elaborate recording process, her songwriting has changed to fit some of the opportunities available in the studio. “In this EP, I was testing the waters, and things developed during the recording process. Now that I’ve had a taste of that, I feel that I’m writing songs that have other parts in mind rather than just writing songs for me and a guitar. I see the other places it can go beyond that.” Weyburn’s 19-year-old Arts was in Nashville last week working on a project she wasn’t quite ready to talk about. “I’m just finishing up the vocals today,” she said during the interview over the phone on Jan. 24. “Yesterday we did the song tracking. Right now, we’re recording

to go to some labels and stuff down here, but it’s going to be released. I’m not going to tell you what it is yet, because it’s going to be a surprise.” She first went to Nashville when she was 15 and has frequented Music City ever since, though the trips are increasingly more regular having just been there in November. “I got (to Nashville) on Jan. 20 and I usually spend 10 days down here each trip. Normally I do some writing, but this time I’m doing some recording. I haven’t done that here at all, so this is totally new and exciting. This is definitely the big time, I guess,” she said with a laugh. “The recording studios are huge.” Locally, Arts performs regularly when she is home in Weyburn and makes appearances periodically at Eddie Webster’s in Estevan. “Growing up in Weyburn I always had a lot of support from Weyburn and the surrounding areas. It’s great to be down here,” she said, adding that she keeps everyone up to date on her business by remaining active via social networks. “Everyone is so supportive of me being down here so it’s very exciting.” She expects to be back

in Nashville over the next few months, and of the songs she has been recording she said they are hoping to release a single to The Highway a country music

station on Sirius XM Radio. Going forward, Arts said she hopes to continue recording more songs with the ultimate goal of producing a complete album.

You never know what is going to inspire you to take an introspective look at the world we’re creating for ourselves. Often it’s a book or particularly prescient article. Maybe it’s a TED talk. Most recently, it was the movie Her that left me asking questions and thinking critically about our developing relationships with technology and one another. In simple terms, Her takes place in an undisclosed but not-too-distant future where the lonely main character begins to have a romantic and deep-seated relationship with his sentient operating system, who is reminiscent of Siri, Apple’s talkative intelligent personal assistant. The film takes our relationship with technology to its literal evolution. The story brings up many interesting ideas. For starters, the main character’s job is writing intimate and personal letters for clients. Rather than penning a note to a family member, friend or lover, in this future, that task is outsourced to a professional. The idea of charging another person with interacting with our loved ones for us demonstrates a further separation of our social interactions. There is already a growing separation between how we engage with others, with fewer moments happening face to face, increasingly replaced with instant messages. Some people have trouble communicating and would love the opportunity to

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers share their feelings by proxy, but even if a professional can do it better, the whole point of our relationships is to share them personally. Is it more important that you say the right thing, or is it OK to be less profound as long you’re there to be supportive? If we are largely communicating through e-mail or IM, just words on a screen, maybe it doesn’t matter if our conversations actually involve us. If our beau on the receiving end reads something that makes them feel cared for and appreciated, does it matter that it isn’t articulated from our hearts as long as it expresses how we feel? Will that personal touch matter anymore? That brings us to the main story, which revolves around the character’s relationship with his operating system, a voice in his ear that carries on a conversation like a real live person. The relationship between man and machine appears to be satisfying the character’s needs. If the most important parts of a relationship are about meeting the emo-

tional and intellectual needs of the partner, it could be reasonable to cut out the other half in favour of a pre-programmed artificial intelligence that can be reprogrammed to meet our specific needs. You can’t program your girlfriend or boyfriend, husband or wife to respond the way you need them to whenever you need them to. Maybe we’ll develop machines that are just better at carrying on meaningful, emotional connections with its users than we are. The film suggests we will be able to refine systems to perfectly provide us with our emotional needs. Of course, that doesn’t take into consideration the importance of all those personal quirks, all those imperfections that make us fuller, more complete and interesting people. Will we choose “artificial perfection” over “glorious imperfection?” The film posits that if we continue to replace our physical connections with digital substitutions, we will go all the way and just start dating our computers. It sounds like a large leap, but as we continue communicating more and more through our devices, we lose the personal and physical contact that I think we all still crave. We may one day have to decide if that’s something we’re willing to give up for good, but I’m not yet ready to toss aside those real-world connections for a “perfect” replacement.

Disease management delicate in hog industry

Flipping through a few favoured agricultural websites it was interesting to see yet another disease is threatening the Canadian hog sector. In this case its the possibility of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) crossing the border from the United States. “PED was discovered in the U.S. nine months ago and has since killed three million pigs,” detailed a Western Producer story. “It is believed to have affected 15 to 20 per cent of the U.S. pork industry, causing millions of dollars in damage.” That there is a disease issue hog producers must deal with is nothing new. I grew up on a hog farm, and even in the later 1960s and early ‘70s the impact of disease on production was becoming recognized by producers. At the time, Atrophic Rhinitis was the disease producers were most aware of. That was an inflammation of the tissues inside the nose, and in its mild form, it was likely in most herds by the end of the era. The concern was when the disease became more serious, a situation where noses would actually twist, making eating more difficult, and became a factor in some secondary respiratory diseases. The era was one where producers were becoming more aware of the idea of biosecurity. It was usual then for producers to ask visitors to their barns to change boots before entering the barns, or at least walking through a disinfectant bath in an attempt to

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist stop disease transfer. There were still many producers, at least those in the seed-stock business, who would attend shows, a place where pigs interacted with each other in the barn and show ring over several days. It was likely the animals were introduced to more than a few bugs in such situations. Of course, back on the farm sows were usually kept outdoors except when farrowing. At the time, most farms were still mixed operations, many having at least a few hogs. That meant magpies, other birds and vermin most likely carried a few pathogens from farm-to-farm. There was a school of thought in those days whereby producers felt disease was somewhat inevitable much like we as humans are going to catch a cold no matter what precautions we take. Those of us who are healthy and have come into contact with as many bugs as possible build up a natural defence to the cold. Some producers thought hogs were better off developing the same natural defences. But hog operations evolved through the

late 1970s toward ever larger operations, operations where all animals were taken indoors, the doors locked and the idea of high-level biosecurity implemented, an evolution made in the face of new diseases such as leptospirosis and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome were shown to have an economic impact. Most modern barns no longer admit visitors, meaning only staff and those with a reason to enter are allowed, and they are often required to shower-in, wear provided clothing and then shower-out. The system makes sense if no bug ever breaks the barrier of defence. But it is very difficult to deal with every possible entry point of disease. Birds and vermin may be less of an issue since barns are now generally much further apart, but feed trucks and trailers used to get hogs to market or new breeding stock are just some of the areas a disease might enter a barn. And once inside an operation, there is likely to be very little natural disease resistance because so much effort has been made to prevent introduction of any pathogen. This is not to suggest the current highlevel biosecurity of hog barns is wrong, but in my mind, at least, when the security fails and something as devastating as PED arrives, the hogs in such operations are likely to be hit hard. And that is why diligence to keep PED out of Canada is so paramount for the hog industry.

BRIDAL SECTION Destination wedding wear (NC) It is cold here, but it's warm and sultry there. No wonder your favourite couple decided to take everyone to a sunny destination for their wedding vows. But how does one choose just the right clothes for that? David's Bridal Canada, a leading special occasion and wedding authority, has put together a list of tips that will help you look your best, wherever the wedding may be: Let the invitation be your guide. Is it a black-tie affair in Italy or a beach-side ceremony in Costa Rica? Wear a long dress if the wedding is black-tie, a short cocktail dress that hits around the knee for a more traditional wedding, or a flowing maxi dress and sparkly flat sandals if you're lucky enough to enjoy some sand and sun. Dress for the time of day. Morning weddings tend to be more casual, so chose attire that is light-weight and flowing. Opt for more structured dresses that feature glitz and glamour for evening or cocktail hour affairs. Be inspired by location. Not sure which colour to wear? Is it okay to wear white on the beach? Is it okay to wear black to a cocktail reception? Victoria Rucks of

David's Bridal Canada says: “Gone are the days where guests have to avoid black or white. The key is to never upstage the bride, so if you want to wear white to a beachside, go ahead. Just make sure it has a bit of pattern or a unique silhouette.”

Think about what packs well. Skip dry clean-only dresses that wrinkle easily. Instead, opt for matte jersey that packs well or choose natural fabrics that can be ironed or steamed at the hotel so you will look great in all the photos, no matter the location.

BRIDAL SECTION Clever ideas for an inexpensive wedding

Are you in search of some ideas for a wed- ding that won’t leave you and your new spouse in debt for the next ten years? Here are a few tips on how to organize a delightful wedding that will not break your newly joined budgets. First of all, it’s not necessarily a thrifty move to

limit the number of guests you invite. In theory, inviting someone to a wedding does- n’t cost you anything; by giving you a gift (usually money), the guest is likely giving you more than the cost of his or her meal. Rather than opting for traditional invita- tions, you could choose the electronic

option. Your photographer or a graphic design service could put together a pretty It is possible to organize a beautiful wedding with a moderately sized budget. digital invitation that would save you mail- ing costs and delays. Bear in mind that qual-

ity can be cost-effec- tive where guest favours and decorations are concerned. If you order some beautiful cen- trepieces from your favourite florist, they can decorate the reception hall all by themselves, especially if the room you’ve rented is already attractive. What’s more, your decora- tive

elements or centrepieces can also be used as guest favours. If there is only one on each table, you could hold a draw for them, or they could be given away as prizes for entertaining games organized by the master of ceremonies or the DJ. When planning how to integrate alcohol into your reception, moderation is the key word. Formulas such as open bars can lead to indelicate behaviour from some of your guests and can be very ex-

pensive to boot. Instead, opt for a cash bar with a complementary glass of champagne for toasting or else a limited number of free drinks per guest. Lastly, think about choosing a wedding date just before or just after the high season. Between May and September costs increase astronomically for limousines, caterers, rece- ption halls, florists, and the list goes on. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise — a magical wedding is still possible in April or October!
