New building up at Bible Camp’s new location in park The Estevan Bible Camp is looking to rejuvenate itself as it looks forward to a brighter and fuller future. The Bible camp’s vicechairman Justin Nixon is a former camp leader and spoke to the Southeast Trader Express last week about the future of the camp and its new home in Woodlawn Regional Park. The camp location was devastated by 2011 flooding, though many of the cabins escaped relatively unscathed. The camps were converted from weeklong ones to day camps in 2011 and 2012, and were held at Living Hope Community Church. The flooding forced the board to look at other potential locations for the camp. Eventually, Woodlawn Regional Park approached them about setting up in the location they could share with the Scouts, just northeast of Met Stadium and right next to the river. “We were in discussion with them to develop this land that happened to be used by the Scouts and will be used by them. It was a great opportunity to give us a lot of flexibility because the time constraints in Rotary Park, the size of the building and the size of the kitchen really hampered what we wanted to do,” said Nixon, saying that with them no longer going to use Rotary Hall, it gives the park a few extra weeks each summer where they can rent it out. “Moving into this facility will give us the flexibility we need. As a camp we need a few more amenities for health reasons.” They need showers on site, more bathroom stalls and a more “commercialstyle” kitchen, he added. “Once we get back up to our full numbers, you need a full-sized kitchen
help clear some brush, during United Way Estevan’s Day of Caring. Between that and the construction of the new hall’s exterior, things are starting to look like they belong. “We’re really excited about the opportunity,” said Nixon about the prospect of moving into the new spot. “The one thing we’re really excited about is the trees. Once we get those cabins in, it’s really going to give the feeling of camping, that camp feel where you’re outdoors, there are trees everywhere, it smells like trees. It really smells like The Estevan Bible Camp is finishing its final year at Rotary Park. Following flooding in 2011, the camp’s board has been working on a new location for the bible camp. The new building, which has sprung up inside Woodlawn Regional Park sits just across the road from Met Stadium. to properly prepare food, so it made sense because we needed a bigger facility and Rotary Hall just isn’t designed to facilitate that for us.” Numbers for the camps are down, with a lot of the blamed place on the flooding, which caused the camps to be pretty quiet for the past two years. The squirt camp is higher than the others, as per usual, but the numbers for the junior and team camps are very low. Still, the camps will go ahead this year. “We made the decision as a board that we’re going to go forward regardless, because we need to start somewhere. We need to rebuild.” The long-term plan for the camp is to turn it into a two-month long, all summer experience. The board is looking ahead three to five years and are hoping to be able to put that in place, but having a building of their own will allow them to do it, free of their three-week time limit with Rotary Hall. “That’s what we’re go-
ing for. That’s what we’re striving for, because we really feel that this area could really use it. It may take a little longer, but we’re excited to work toward that,” said Nixon. He said that once they have the number of kids to support a summer-long camp that is something they would like to try. He noted they have always built through the squirt camps, as those kids return each summer for subsequent years. After the program was devastated by flooding in 2011, they will need to replenish those numbers. Nixon said it could take a few years, but the board is prepared for that. “That’s what we’re preparing for. We have a couple of things we’re going to push in the offseason to really promote camp. A lot of people don’t think about it during the winter, but one thing we’re trying to work on is our exposure throughout the community,” said Nixon, adding that families don’t need to
send their kids to Regina or Kenosee when there is a camp just a few minutes south of the city. The original plan was to get the renovations of the new facility completed and ready to go for this camp season, but with the winter running late into the spring that became unfeasible. Four walls and a roof have been erected and they are awaiting the concrete for the floor. That won’t come until later this summer, as Nixon noted construction has been put on hold as they run the camps. They will be building three new cabins for next year as well. Those will include a building for the director, who has stayed in a mobile home in the past, a cabin for the camp speaker and another one to be used as a staff room, which will provide storage in the offseason. Power and water lines still need to be trenched in and connected to the main hall. Nixon noted a number of volunteers came in to
the outdoors.” The board did canvass other areas when looking for a new spot for the camp, and while some included areas where they would have to plant a lot of trees and let them develop, Nixon said that just wouldn’t be the same. Camps will be hosted for the final time in Rotary Park this summer. The squirt camp (ages seven to nine) began on Sunday, with the junior camp (10 to 12) will run July 10 to 15 and the team camp (13 to 16) will be held between July 16 and 21.

National anthems for the patriotic soul Singing national anthems makes our hearts glow with pride and patriotism. That’s what a Canadian study suggests, but it must be bunk. I don’t know about other people, but every time I hear O Canada, I roll my eyes and think “Are we still playing this thing? Aren’t our lives too busy to take a minute to listen to this thing again?” I can’t be alone with that feeling. Each time I hear the song I get fidgety and agitated because I know the only way to be polite is to stand in one spot and keep my mouth shut. I couldn’t possibly be on better terms with my country. Canada is great. National anthems, on the other hand, are a bit of an outdated practice. I don’t know if there is ever a good reason to play a national anthem. It should just be something we have written on a scroll in the national library or something. We don’t need to play it or sing or hear it. Sporting events just refuse to drop national anthems from their pre-game itinerary. You see at the start of games, Americans, 70,000 of them, hand on heart belting out the Star Spangled Banner with a tear twinkling in their eyes at the start of every NFL game. How are they still moved to tears at the sound of that song rather than bored to tears? The least we can do is make some changes so it’s a little more bearable. Toronto’s 1990 city council, with some
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers pretty bombastic cajones, recommended to the federal government a few changes to the English version of the song. They wanted to remove the sexism and male-centric wording when we sing about sons commanding. You see, daughters can command things too. The request to go gender-neutral fired up the nation, because if there’s one thing we will collectively stand up against, it’s feminism. A few years ago there was also a call to remove all references to God because we are a country with a freedom-to and a freedom-from attitude when it comes to religion. Nobody had the stomach for that change either, probably because they felt the anthem was sacrosanct. We can’t make changes to the national anthem. It’s been that way since the beginning of time. How dare anyone suggest something so un-Canadian? Well, reading up on the history of our national anthem on the government’s heritage page, I learned the song was commissioned for a ceremony on Saint-JeanBaptiste Day and was written in French. It was only translated to English to appease
the country’s masses. It was written as a French Canadian patriotic poem. The English weren’t supposed to be involved at all. We now have two different versions of the national anthem, the French one, which has remained untouched since the beginning, and some English bastardization that has changed a number of times over the years. That’s right. It’s not just a translation from French, but it’s been rewritten over and over. The version you know came about in 1980. They are now two completely different songs. The time will come soon for another rewrite. I’m surprised Harper’s Conservatives haven’t made it part of their agenda to add some more nods to the Royal Army or our connection to the royal family, because isn’t royalty just so romantic? Previous versions of the song include hilarious lines like “No stains thy glorious annals gloss,” and “Lord God of Hosts! We now implore/Bless our dear land this day and evermore.” Another version makes an inexplicable reference to God Save the King. I don’t know why we would reference other anthems inside our own anthem. Then comes anthem etiquette. The word direct from our government says that men are supposed to remove their hats, but women and children “do not remove their hats on such occasions.” I guess we let the feminists win that one.
4-H continues to teach life skills If you grew up in rural Canada you are likely well aware of 4-H, with a rather good chance you have been involved with the organization at some point. That is not really surprising since 4-H is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. For the past century the organization has been serving youth, starting with the founding club in Roland, MB. Over the decades 4-H has focused on rural youth, although showing an ability to adapt to change, 4-H clubs are now found in many urban settings as well. While we look at 4-H as traditionally providing youth with the opportunity to learn about cattle, horses, sheep and hogs through projects, which speak to the organization’s rural roots, today youth are also learning about cooking, computers and cameras. Youth can now pick projects that are of particular interest to them, and as long as they can find a project leader to help mentor their progress, they can explore
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist things that are now a far cry from livestock production on the farm. The reasoning for broadening the scope of 4-H is obviously one fueled by a desire at preserving what is at the heart of the program. In the past, serving rural youth was enough. There were clubs in almost every small community, with lots of farm youth interested in working with cattle, horses and other livestock. Of course we have seen a significant population shift from the war years until now, one where the rural population is in decline, with a shift to larger urban centres. For 4-H to function in a city such as Yorkton or Regina, it means adapting
programming, because having a steer or sheep as your project simply doesn’t work. The heart of 4-H is not about the project though. Whether it’s raising a steer or learning to knit, the key to 4-H comes in its long-held motto “learn to do by doing.” Youth are encouraged to discover on their own. They learn by watching and by working with others. They are helped to grow, learning not just about their project, but about keeping records, speaking in public and working to help others in their club. They are skills that go beyond growing a good steer or knitting a good pair of socks. They are life skills those going through the 4-H program will be able to draw on in their education and once they enter the workforce. The key to 4-H, the element that has helped the program flourish for a century, is teaching life skills to generation after generation of Canadians, and hopefully it will remain active in that role for decades to come.

Girling says he’s “extremely optimistic” the company’s proposal to ship Western crude east via Quebec has enough customer support to go ahead. TransCanada’s Keystone XL proposal to connect mostly oilsands crude to the U.S. Gulf Coast has been in limbo for years amid fervent environmental opposition. Girling says a mid-summer decision by the Obama administration on Keystone XL is looking unlikely and he can’t predict when the protracted regulatory process will finally wrap up. International CAIRO - Egypt’s interim leadership laid out a fasttrack timetable to elect a new president and parliament by early next year, in a move that is almost certain to deepen the anger of ousted President Mohammed Morsi’s supporters but could ease Western concerns about the future of democracy in the key Arab nation. Under the plan put forward by the interim president late Monday, two panels would be appointed to make amendments to the Islamist-backed constitution passed under Morsi’s government. Those changes would be put to a referendum within about 4 1/2 months. Parliamentary elections would be held within two months after that, and once the new parliament convenes it would have a week to set a date for a presidential election. The swift issuing of the transition plan reflected a drive on the part of Egypt’s military-backed interim leadership to push ahead with a post-Morsi political plan despite Islamist rejection — and is certain to further outrage the ousted president’s Muslim Brotherhood. National HIGH RIVER, Alta. - Some residents from High River neighbourhoods hardest hit by flooding in Alberta last month are to get escorted visits through their homes. Reconstruction officials are asking people from the Hamptons and Wallaceville areas to provide their contact information so the visits can be set up. The government says special teams have begun assessing the houses and determining safe routes through the communities. Officials caution that while some houses may be safe for residents to enter on their own, other people will only be allowed in with a special technician. Still others won’t be allowed in at all, but may be allowed to see the outside of their homes. The two neighbourhoods were still standing in metres of water on the weekend — more than two weeks after heavy rains caused extensive flooding in much of southern Alberta. *** CALGARY - The CEO of one of Canada’s biggest pipeline companies says there’s no silver lining in the Lac-Megantic train disaster. There have been suggestions that transporting oil by pipeline may become more palatable after several oil-laden rail cars exploded over the weekend in the Quebec town. But TransCanada boss Russ Girling says there’s “no good news here for anybody” in the tragedy and the notion that the pipeline industry will somehow benefit makes no sense.

Islamist group contends that Morsi was removed by a coup and that everything that follows is illegal. The “constitutional declaration” announced by interim President Adly Mansour late on Monday coincided with the nation’s deadliest day since Morsi’s July 3 ouster, with more than 50 of his supporters killed by security forces as the country’s top Muslim cleric raised the spectre of civil war. *** GROSSETO, Italy - The trial of the captain of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia cruise liner has begun in a theatre converted into a courtroom in Tuscany to accommodate all the survivors and relatives of the 32 victims who want to see justice carried out in the 2012 tragedy. The sole defendant, Francesco Schettino, his eyes shaded by sunglasses and slipping into a back door, made no comment to reporters as he arrived for his trial Tuesday on charges of multiple manslaughter, abandoning ship and causing the shipwreck near the island of Giglio. His lawyer, Domenico Pepe, told reporters that, as expected, the judge was postponing the hearing due to an eight-day nationwide lawyers’ strike. Pepe said some 1,000 witnesses are expected to eventually testify. Many of them are expected to be from among the 4,2000 passengers and crew aboard the ship that struck a jagged reef off Giglio, took on water and capsized. Schettino has denied wrongdoing.

Charles rushed for 119 yards on 11 carries, including an 70-yard run for a touchdown to help the Eskimos defeat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30-20 on Sunday. Charles also caught three passes for 27 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown. In other awards, Winnipeg lineman Bryant Turner is the defensive player of the week, Saskatchewan kick returner Jock Sanders takes top special teams honours, and B.C. running back Andrew Harris is the top Canadian. Turner led the Blue Bombers defence with five tackles, including three sacks, and forced a fumble in Winnipeg’s 19-11 win over Montreal on Thursday as star Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo was limited to only 121 yards through the air in the game. Athletics Canada will officially introduce Eriksson as head coach of its Olympic and Paralympic program on Wednesday, according to sources. The Philadelphia Phillies’ slugger needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss at least six to eight weeks. An MRI on Monday confirmed the tear in his knee. A date for surgery hasn’t been set. “It could have been much more significant damage,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “We don’t want any of our players on the DL. But we know what it is and it’s treatable. Hopefully we can get him back in time to play this year.” Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, went on the disabled list Saturday. The three-time All-Star was hitting .266 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs. He was noticeably hobbling during games before he was shut down. He said he continued to play through the pain because he thought he could perform. “We have to take care of it,” Amaro
said. Howard played his first game last season on July 6 after tearing his left Achilles tendon making the final out in the 2011 NL division series. The 33-year-old first baseman has been on a steady decline since signing a $125 million, five-year contract extension on April 26, 2010. *** GLENDALE, Ariz. - The prospective owners of the Phoenix Coyotes have signed their lease agreement for Jobing.com Arena. Daryl Jones, partner with Renaissance Sports & Entertainment, tweeted on Monday that the lease agreement with the City of Glendale has been executed. The Glendale City Council approved a 15-year, $225 million arena lease deal with RSE during a special session last week. RSE still has to complete its purchase of the team and get approval from the NHL’s Board of Governors, but those are expected to be formalities. The Coyotes have been run by the league the past four years after former owner Jerry Moyes took the team into bankruptcy in 2009.
