Sun Country: Mandatory immunizations ‘protecting patients’ across province By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury

Saskatchewan health care workers will be required to get flu shots or wear masks during the flu season, and despite the anger emerging from certain health staff, Dr. Shauna Hudson, Medical Health Officer for the Sun Country Health Region, sees this as a positive step forward for patients. “I know there are certainly people who aren’t pleased with just having two choices,” she said, “but most of the people I’ve worked with are very supportive of this approach.” Hudson said Sun Country has made a big push toward encouraging health care workers to immunize themselves over the past several years, and as a result, has one of the highest coverage rates in the province. In 2014, 77 per cent of all health care workers in Sun Country were immunized. “It’s one of the highest in the province,” Hudson said about the figure. “That’s been the case for the past five

or six years, and sometimes we’ve made it past the 80 per cent mark, but we haven’t been able to achieve our goal of 85 per cent.” According to the government of Saskatchewan’s website, only half of Saskatchewan’s health care workers get the flu shot. This number is likely to go up with the new policy, but Hudson said some are upset because they think they don’t have much choice in the matter. “You do have another choice, you can wear a mask whenever you’re around patients,” she explained. She noted however, having to wear a mask so frequently can become a challenging task. Getting into the habit of putting it on when entering patient care and changing it regularly may take time, and the warmth around the mouth can be uncomfortable for some. Hudson said the policy hasn’t clearly defined when exactly health care workers should be wearing masks, suggesting waiting rooms may or may not be a part of the guidelines. Hudson stressed the importance

of encouraging visitors to wear masks or receive immunization in order to further protect patients, and those who are most vulnerable to the flu, like the elderly and those who have existing health concerns. “Last year we had masks placed at the entrances of the facilities, and we’ll continue to do that to try and encourage visitors to protect the patients,” she said. “It’s about educating people, and I hope people start talking about it more.” Hudson emphasized the safeness of the flu vaccine, and side effects, which sometimes include stiffness of the arms, runny noses, occasional aches and pains are signs that the immune system is trying to fight off the virus. “You’re not getting the influenza virus injected, it’s a killed virus, so it’s just part of the virus that’s been killed,” she explained. Immunization season begins Oct. 12., just before the flu season starts some time in the middle of November.

Retail sales in Canada up 0.7 per cent in May, beat economist expectations OTTAWA - Retail sales rose 0.7 per cent in May, boosted by sales of new cars and trucks, according to Statistics Canada. The agency says sales reached $42 billion in the month as gains were made across seven sectors that account for more than half of all retail trade. Economists had expected a gain of 0.6 per cent, according to Thomson

Reuters. Statistics Canada says motor vehicle sales, along with auto parts, led the way as they gained 2.5 per cent. Sales of new cars and trucks rose 2.3 per cent in May, with a record 197,740 sold, following on a 3.5 per cent jump in April. Excluding autos, retail sales were up 0.1 per cent for the month. Economists had expected a gain of 0.3 per cent.

For the seventh consecutive month, gasoline stations reported higher sales, up by two per cent in May. And after a slow start to spring, sales at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers rose 3.5 per cent. Other sectors seeing increases included furniture and home furnishings stores, up 3.7 per cent, sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores, where sales

grew 2.1 per cent, and convenience stores, up by 2.3 per cent. Food and beverage stores saw sales decrease 1.6 per cent with declines mainly at supermarkets and other grocery stores. Beer, wine and liquor store sales were also down by 2.5 per cent, and in health and personal care stores, where sales were lower by 1.2 per cent — their first decline in four months.

Why no bookstore Estevan? While sorting through the magical stash of books in our office that seemingly repopulates itself with novels every week I’m serious I don’t know how it works - a colleague of mine brought something up I hadn’t thought about since my initial arrival in Estevan. She said it’s disappointing that a bookstore is nowhere in sight in the city. This statement hit me across the face as hard as the heat has recently, and it’s only because I’ve been visiting the library more frequently that I haven’t thought about this unfortunate fact. I’ve never been more grateful for a library as I am now. Though I’ve mainly stuck to borrowing graphic novels, since I know I can get through those before I have to return them, it’s good to know that a plethora of novels do exist somewhere in this town .. er city, whatever. During my time at school, I made frequent visits to the bookstores in downtown Toronto. From Chapters, to the lovely used bookstores like The Great Escape, I visited them all. I made frequent stops at the Silver Snail, a comic book/hobby store, and purchased at least a comic or two every week. Money was an issue during college, of course. Do I buy some books this week and live off cabbage the next few days? Why yes, yes I will.

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling

Knowing I was going to have some money coming my way on a consistent basis, I was really looking forward to making trips to the bookstore in town without having to think about the cabbage that would be on my plate for the next few days every time I entered. Sometimes it was cabbage, other times I got lucky and had a stash of mac and cheese. As luck would have it, no such thing exists here. No, Wal Mart doesn’t count. I don’t care for the novelizations of the recent blockbuster movies. I’m talking about the store with shelves filled with fiction, mystery and fantasy that have stood the test of time. The store with that weird but satisfying smell. This can, and should exist here in Estevan. There are ways you can adapt to the evolution of society, which is obsessed with materials that don’t offer pages filled with sword fighting or spider-swinging action. Look at Chapters for example. You walk

into a Chapters store today, and you nearly forget it’s a book store. That’s because it’s not just a book store. They have tea cups, stuffed animals, notebooks, CDs, movies, more movies, decorations, and then if you still feeling like buying more, they have books upstairs. Anyone considering to open a bookstore in the Energy City, (please, anyone?) should keep this in mind. Expand your stock, yes books must be the focal point, but there are plenty of ways to attract new customers. Expand your stock to the online marketplace, which in today’s world is practically a necessity, and your reach will expand greatly. I love comics graphic novels, but I’m not the only who does. Take the first issue of the Amazing Spider-Man, the rebooted one that came out in May. It had a pre-order sales figure of 500,000, making it the highest initially ordered individual issue in the last decade. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the only other book I can think of that has hit those preorder numbers. Implement comics and graphic novels to your inventory, and I promise you, you’ll have others besides me visiting your store on a daily basis. Until such a dream becomes reality, I must get back to reading. Library return dates are approaching.

Wild boar problem is our mistake I was recently reading about the concerns from University of Saskatchewan researchers regarding the risk wild boar pose in Saskatchewan. We have already seen an impact of the introduced species in Manitoba, but Ryan Brook painted a much bleaker picture to come in a recent Western, Producer story. Brook sees the potential of wild boar numbers to explode based on their ability to produce sizeable litters up to twice a year. The ability to reproduce, coupled with an abundant food supply across the grain growing region of the Prairies, and limited, if any natural predators, is certainly a recipe for potential problems. Now it would be easy to point the fingers of blame in this scenario. There are the farmers; some of who simply left gates open to rid themselves of a livestock enterprise which failed to live up to its proposed potential. In other cases, poor fences or the natural ability of pigs to escape enclosures led to their introduction to the wilds here. Then there are the officials who originally determined wild boar could be raised

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist as livestock without recognizing the thread they posed. But let’s be realistic here. It has been the lot of humankind to do a poor job of managing wildlife. We have managed to shoot to extinction the passenger pigeons in spite of historic references to massive flocks of tens of thousands at one time. We drove the bison from the wild because we coveted its rangeland for cattle. We nearly saw the black-footed ferret follow the passenger pigeon to the pages of history books. It was only by sheer luck a small wild population survived and while breeding programs have grown numbers and facilitated a reintroduction to Southern Saskatchewan, the species is by no means guaranteed a long-term future.

While I myself am a happy carp fisherman, many on the Prairies curse the rough fish, which of course is an introduced one to our waters, as are all trout stocks in the province where no true trout species is a natural resident. And the list goes on. The burrowing owl is threatened by the impacts of man. The wolf is basically gone from the grain lands of the Prairies, hunted out of the picture because they were once seen as a threat to livestock production. Today, if the wolf remained, they might be a natural predator to wild boar numbers. So while we should be concerned about wild pigs, the crop damage they can cause, and the potential to cause much more damage if numbers explode, we also need to realize blame lies with humankind’s arrogance. We seem to always think we can manage nature better than nature can manage itself. Whether it’s arrogantly trying to manicure the water flows of the region, or dealing with wildlife, we constantly come up short, and are left scrambling to deal with our mistakes.

the situation, believing they’re less likely to get in trouble. “If they hit a kid at school they get in trouble, but if they send a nasty text message, they’re less likely to get caught. It creates a big danger and it’s why we see this big cyberbullying epidemic happening,” she said. Envision’s Cyberviolence project, which was funded by Status of Women Canada, will focus on preventing and eliminating cyberviolence among girls and young women in southeast Saskatchewan. By building partnerships with the communities and keeping an ear to the ground, the project hopes to develop support services to combat cyber bullying. “Youth are really into texting right now, and it’s the way they feel most comfortable communicating,” said Juli Dzuba, coordinator for the project. “I think the new app will help victims open up more.” According to Envision’s website, only one out of every 10 victims will inform a parent or trusted adult of their abuse. “Sometimes they’re not ready to open up about the situation, and they’re afraid of what’s going to happen to them if somebody finds out they told someone about the bullying,” explained Dzuba. Cyberbullying is a serious issue that has left some of the children who speak with her hating

Rolling

A new anonymous, online anti-bullying reporting tool might help battle the prevalent bullying children face today, but its effectiveness, especially against cyberbullying, remains to be proven. Following Saskatchewan’s action plan to address bullying and cyberbullying, which was established Nov. 2013, the Ministry of Education has checked off one of its initial goals by partnering with SaskTel and developing an online reporting tool. Named the I Am Stronger initiative, it allows anyone to access their website, and use the new reporting tool to anonymously submit a report. It’s available 24/7, 365 days a year, and according to the Ministry of Education, a mobile application will be available later this fall. Envision’s Children Exposed to Violence Program counsellor Allyson Fisher, said the new online app could potentially be implemented into their own services. “It’s definitely something that I can foresee using myself,” she said, noting the other tools victims can turn to, like the Kids Help Phone line. “This would be another resource for them.” Fisher stressed the importance of having a face-to-face conversation with counsellors and other support systems, and hopes

the process of helping victims through the new app includes a step that points victims in the direction of those options. “I would hope with the app, that encouragement in seeking some other help will come as well,” she said. Const. Braden Lonsberry, school resource officer for the Estevan Police Services, said he hopes the new system won’t be abused by people submitting false reports, and is unsure how well authorities can follow up on certain cases, since reports are filed anonymously, and can often leave out important information. “I’d still rather investigate a false report, than not investigate a situation that needs to be looked into,” he said. As the tools to assist victims of bullying shift over to an electronic platform, so have the methods of bullying itself, and Lonsberry said 70 per cent of the reports he comes across are related to cyberviolence. “When I was a kid, you see a bully from nine to three-thirty, then when you went home you didn’t have to worry about it. Now, some kids can’t really escape it, it’s 24/7 for them,” he said. A big reason cases of cyberbullying are rising, Fisher said, has to do with the fact that oppressors are able to largely remain anonymous and distance themselves from

Man taken from court after outburst during preliminary in Loretta Saunders death National HALIFAX - Four sheriffs had to restrain a man in Halifax provincial court today after he lunged in the direction of two people accused in the death of Loretta Saunders. The scuffle broke out shortly after Judge Ann Derrick left the courtroom for a brief break following testimony on the third day of a preliminary hearing. An uncle of Saunders was in the third row of the public gallery and muttering expletives directed at

the two accused when he suddenly lunged forward, yelling. Two sheriffs and other people in the gallery struggled to restrain the man while four other sheriffs rushed the accused, Blake Leggette and Victoria Henneberry, through a back door to a secure area behind the courtroom. Two more sheriffs burst into the courtroom and were able to subdue the man, who was led out of the courtroom and asked not to return. Other people in the

gallery sobbed, wailed and embraced each other as the man was led away. One woman, wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Saunders and her father, pleaded with everyone to remain calm. *** VANCOUVER - Another 153 firefighters from across Canada have arrived in British Columbia as the province braces for more hot, dry weather that could send the wildfire danger soaring. The new teams will spell-off crews that have been working on roughly 15 large or potentially threatening blazes, including the 15-square-kilometre Botanie (bo-TAN’-ee) Road fire just outside Lytton, 260 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, where more than 100 residents remain out of their homes. Newly arriving crews will have to endure about 48 hours of wet and wicked weather as a powerful storm is forecast to bring torrential rain, lightning and winds to most of southern B.C., but the heat is expected to return by Friday.

Judges in Afghanistan sentence police officer to death for shooting, killing AP photographer Continued from page 6 judges also sentenced Naqibullah, who goes by one name like many other Afghans, to four years in prison for shooting and wounding Gannon in the attack. The judges ruled Tuesday during a two-hour hearing that followed a three-month police investigation. Naqibullah, represented by a defence lawyer provided to him by a legal association, argued with the judges before his sentencing, saying at one point that he was “not a normal person.” However, judges dismissed his claim after he provided his name, age and the correct date. Naqibullah also denied judges’ claims that he once travelled to Pakistan to

be trained by extremists, saying he only received medical care while there. Afghanistan’s president must sign off on any execution order. Naqibullah also may appeal within 15 days to a second court and then ultimately to the country’s Supreme Court. Gannon and Niedringhaus travelled to Khost under the protection of Afghan forces and were at a district police headquarters in a village outside the city on April 4 when witnesses say Naqibullah walked up to their hired car, yelled “Allahu Akbar” — God is Great — and fired on them in the back seat with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The country’s national meteorological centre said Wednesday afternoon that Typhoon Matmo, with gusts of 119 kilometres (74 miles) per hour, was travelling northeast in coastal waters off the heavily populated province of Fujian. Authorities in eastern Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, ordered fishing boats to return to port

and stepped up patrols to watch for breaks in coastal and river embankments, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The typhoon weakened after dumping heavy rain overnight on Taiwan, where it injured five people and knocked out power to 31,505 homes, according to the island’s Central News Agency. The centre of the typhoon was forecast to turn north after hitting land and pass over areas west of Shanghai, China’s biggest business centre, according to the Hong Kong Observatory. Rains of up to 300 millimeters (12 inches) were forecast in Shanghai and areas as far north as Jiangsu province, Xinhua said, citing the country’s

National TORONTO - With just one game under its belt, Tottenham has barely worked up a pre-season sweat. But for Toronto FC, in the midst of a gruelling July league schedule, Wednesday’s friendly with the English Premier League club has manager Ryan Nelsen in full protective mode. “Everybody’s going to get minutes,” Nelsen told a news conference at BMO Field Tuesday. “We’ve got a few injuries. We’ve got guys who have played a lot recently that won’t play. “This is a chance for a lot of the guys who haven’t seen many minutes in the league games to stake a claim. And what better way (than to) play well against a worldclass team.” That means backup goalie Chris Konopka, who has waited his turn patiently behind first Julio Cesar and now Joe Bendik, will finally see some action. Teenage goalie Quillan Roberts, one of several on-loan player recalled from the Wilmington Hammerheads for the friendly, could also see action. Roberts, 19, is coming off back-to-back shutouts in the USL Pro circuit, earning him player of the week honours. Ashtone Morgan, Kyle Bekker, Dwayne De Rosario, Jeremy Hall and Andrew Wiedeman would also be candidates to get a good run-out for Toronto. One interesting subplot is whether Nelsen will make English striker Jermain Defoe captain for the night as he takes on his former club. With skipper Steven Caldwell sidelined by a quad tear, American midfielder Michael Bradley has been wearing the captain’s armband. Nelsen could swing the spotlight on Defoe, who played 362 games for Spurs, by having him lead out the team Wednesday. Asked if Defoe would captain his side, Nelsen said only that it was a good idea. The Toronto manager, who captained New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup, is usually not very interested in discussing who will wear the armband. His standard answer when Caldwell is out is that he has plenty of leaders in his dressing room. Nelsen is also anything but sentimental when it to comes to squad selection. Making Defoe the captain for the night could give the game more of a testimonial feel. Neither team is treating the match like a cup final, however. Toronto is planning to make the most of the unlimited substitutions while Tottenham’s Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen referred to pre-season play as “getting the legs going and just preparing for the real games.” Still it is Mauricio Pochettino’s first camp in charge at Spurs, after coming over from Southampton, so players will be looking to impress. One Toronto FC player pointed to Bradley as the likely captain, saying Defoe would likely have little interest in wearing the armband. Defoe did not start last Saturday in Houston, coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute, and will not play this Saturday against defending champion Sporting Kansas City after earning a one-game suspension for accumulation of yellow cards. Nevertheless Nelsen said Defoe is unlikely to play the full 90 minutes against Spurs, noting that the 31-old striker has not had a break since leaving Tottenham mid-campaign last season to join Toronto in January. “We have to be careful with him. He might play 45 (minutes) and that’s all,” he said. An open practice Tuesday at BMO Field drew several hundred Tottenham fans, as well as club mascot Chirpy. The Spurs fans booed a couple of Arsenal fans who dared show up in Gunners gear before cheering the Tottenham players as they ran on the pitch on a steamy, sunny late afternoon. Electronic advertising around the field proclaimed Tottenham as “your local EPL club” and a “proud partner of Toronto FC.” The two clubs struck a marketing agreement as part of the Defoe transfer, which included Wednesday’s friendly. Tottenham opened its pre-season tour on Saturday with a 3-3 tie against the Seattle Sounders. Spurs plays the Chicago Fire on Sunday before heading home. NOTES — Canadian point guard Steve Nash, a longtime Spurs fan, took part in Tottenham’s practice Monday at Toronto’s training ground. “I felt like a kid at Christmas,” the Lakers star was quoted as saying on the Spurs website. “I got lucky a little and managed not to embarrass myself but what an amazing day — one I’ll never forget.”

Plane crashes at Taiwan airport, 47 people trapped TAIPEI, Taiwan - A plane landing in stormy weather crashed outside an airport on a small Taiwanese island late Wednesday, and the transport minister said 47 people were trapped and feared dead. Taiwanese Transport Minister Yeh Kuang-shih was quoted by the government’s Central News Agency as saying 11 other people were injured when the plane crashed and caught fire while making a second landing attempt.

Yeh was quoted as saying the flight, operated by Taiwan’s TransAsiaAirways, carried 58 passengers and crew members. The news agency had earlier quoted a local fire brigade chief as saying that 51 people had been killed. Flight GE222, a twinengine turboprop ATR-72 aircraft, was heading from the southern port city of Kaohsiung to the island of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait, according to the Taiwanese

news agency. It crashed outside the airport in Xixi village, and pictures in local media showed firefighters using flashlights to look at wreckage in the darkness. Penghu is a lightly populated island that averages about two flights a day from Taipei. The flight left Kaohsiung at 4:53 p.m. for Magong on Penghu, according to the head of Taiwan’s Civil AeronauticsAdministration,

Jean Shen. At 7:06 p.m., after saying it would make a second attempt at a landing, the plane lost contact with the tower. Visibility as the plane approached was 1,600 metres (one mile), which met standards for landing, and two flights had landed before GE222, one at 5:34 p.m. and the other at 6:57 p.m., the

Shanahan begins changing direction of Leafs by hiring Dubas as assistant GM TORONTO - Change was on Brendan Shanahan’s mind when he took over as president of the Toronto Maple Leafs. After taking some time to assess the organization, he made his first major change to the front office Tuesday, firing assistant general manager Claude Loiselle and vice-president of hockey operations Dave

Poulin, and hiring 28-yearold Kyle Dubas as the team’s new assistant GM. The move represented a shift in philosophy to shape the Leafs more in Shanahan’s image. “He’s not tied to any old ideas,” Shanahan said of Dubas. “I believe we have people in our organization who have maybe been afraid of certain words and certain

information who, once you speak with Kyle, I think he makes it seem much more logical and easy to apply.” For some time, the Leafs have been considered behind the times with advanced statistics and even the way NHL rosters are shaped. Truculence was and still is a Brian Burke buzzword, and long after his departure Toronto has remained under GM Dave Nonis and coach Randy Carlyle a team that prizes intangibles and toughness perhaps more than the rest of the league. Hiring Dubas doesn’t immediately mean that

will end, especially given that most of the off-season moving and shaking is over. But the former Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds GM brings fresh ideas and could make the Leafs more willing to embrace different philosophies. “I think every organization rightly or wrongly changes every day,” Dubas said during his introductory news conference at Air Canada Centre. “If you’re not changing, everything around you is and thus you’re going to change in not a great way. I’ve got the impression in talking to Brendan and talking to Dave

that they’re certainly open to any and all ideas, and that was one of the things that was most enticing about the situation here for me.” Shanahan said he began this process just “polling the hockey world” looking for rising stars and innovators to talk to, not specifically a person to hire as an assistant GM. A conversation with OHL commissioner David Branch and others led to Dubas emerging as the top name. Over some time, Shanahan began to see Dubas as not just a source of knowledge but someone he’d like to apply that to the Leafs’ organization. An expected two-hour meeting became seven and became dinner as the two men not only bonded over the shared experiences of being criticized in new jobs but challenged each other’s preconceived notions about hockey. Dubas, who served as a Greyhounds scout as a teenager before becoming the youngest NHLPA certified agent and the second youngest GM in OHL history, made a strong impression on Shanahan. “I think our view on hockey and how it’s being played and how it should be played are very similar,” Shanahan said. “But immediately for a young guy to come in and have his first meeting with me and challenge thoughts and ideas, I thought that was maybe the most encouraging sign. That’s what I want, I always want our group to be a group where thoughts and ideas are challenged and you come out together as a team.” Asked what changes he’d like to make to the Leafs, Dubas played the card that he’ll do what he’s asked. But what drew him away from his hometown Greyhounds — not a “slam dunk” — was an ability to make an impact.

“I was enthused with my talking to Brendan, then even more enthused with my discussions with Dave and where he sees the game going and the game evolving,” Dubas said. “That, to me, was one of the more exciting parts of the entire process: Knowing that I’d be able to come in and be heard and help out as much as possible.” Shanahan also thinks Dubas will be able to teach older members of the organization a few things, lauding his personal skills to be able to communicate and convince without being overbearing. With the 50-year-old talking so much about changing the Leafs’ “culture,” Dubas is a step in that direction. “I can certainly say that anybody in our organization, regardless of what they were asked in the past or past years, their opinions, a little bit of time with Kyle can change those opinions and change those views,” Shanahan said. “He is not an in-your-face kind of guy, he’s logical, he’s thoughtful.” Asked if logic was something that was missing, Shanahan said it was “something that we obviously felt needed to be improved upon.” Even amid his excitement about hiring Dubas, Shanahan said it was a difficult day to let good people go. Poulin had been around since 2009 and Loiselle since 2010. Each originally hired by Burke, Poulin and Loiselle didn’t fit with the new regime of Shanahan, Nonis and now Dubas. “I think that there would’ve been some redundancies there had they stayed and there would’ve been some changes to their role that I don’t think was necessarily going to be a proper fit for them,” Shanahan said. ⇢ p. 15

Shanahan expected to ‘influence’ organization ⇠ p. 14 Shanahan added that Dubas’s specific duties for the Leafs were ironed out at dinner with Nonis on Monday night. Though Dubas has salary-cap and CBA experience from his past career as an agent, the team is expected to hire another assistant GM for some of that day-to-day work as well as potentially someone else

in the front office. “We want to make sure that everybody’s in their most comfortable place and a place in which we’re as efficient as we can be as a club,” Shanahan said. Even with another assistant GM around, Shanahan expects Dubas to influence the organization as a whole. “Information is power

and Kyle is great at gathering information,” he said. “It’s not just one specific job for him. I think he’s somebody that really wants to sort of be involved in a lot of things.” Dubas spent the past three seasons as GM in Sault Ste. Marie, and the Greyhounds made the playoffs twice after a rocky start. Concerned with his own

They still need to figure out what to do with restricted-free-agent goaltender James Reimer and sign restricted-free-agent defenceman Jake Gardiner to a new contract, things that Shanahan said Nonis has under control. As far as improving the rest of the on-ice product with the Leafs, Shanahan said: “We’re working on it.”

in time. “I know what a lot of the criticisms and a lot of the positives are surrounding the team and now it’s just going to be about really digging into it and breaking it down that I’m working here,” Dubas said. Later Tuesday, the Leafs signed left-winger David Booth to a US$1.1million one-year contract.

team, Dubas didn’t get a chance to watch the Leafs much but caught some replays recently once the possibility grew that he’d be moving to the NHL. Living in Ontario, Dubas couldn’t avoid hearing about the Leafs. And though his only connection to the coaching staff is knowing assistant Steve Spott, he’ll have a chance to learn more

They were both entertaining performances and enjoyed by all the audience. Destiny Adams was a helper for grandma and grandpa Fichter for delivering meals on wheels. Many residents of the OutramTorquay area attended the Canada Day celebrations held at the Oungre campsite. They enjoyed a parade and an afternoon of gospel singers with groups such as the Daae family and the Hanson trio. It was certainly good entertainment. Their play structures were a great attraction for the children. Heather and Jeff Pyra and children enjoyed a week of camping at the Oungre campsite. Dorothy Sovdi, had surgery on July 11 and returned home on July 18. We wish you a speedy recovery. Destiny Adams hatched out some wild duck eggs and has since released them in the dugout. Good work Destiny. It is so good to see our young people interested in promoting our wild life.
